Abstract
The chemical and biological interest in this element and the molecules bearing selenium has been exponentially growing over the years. Selenium, formerly designated as a toxin, becomes a vital trace element for life that appears as selenocysteine and its dimeric form, selenocystine, in the active sites of selenoproteins, which catalyze a wide variety of reactions, including the detoxification of reactive oxygen species and modulation of redox activities. From the point of view of drug developments, organoselenium drugs are isosteres of sulfur-containing and oxygen-containing drugs with the advantage that the presence of the selenium atom confers antioxidant properties and high lipophilicity, which would increase cell membrane permeation leading to better oral bioavailability. This statement is the paramount relevance considering the big number of clinically employed compounds bearing sulfur or oxygen atoms in their structures including nucleosides and carbohydrates. Thus, in this article we have focused on the relevant features of the application of selenium in medicinal chemistry. With the increasing interest in selenium chemistry, we have attempted to highlight the most significant published data on this subject, mainly concentrating the analysis on the last years. In consequence, the recent advances of relevant pharmacological organoselenium compounds are discussed.

Abstract
An efficient catalytic system consisting of KI and K2S2O8 for a one-pot pseudo three-component cascade reaction in the preparation of a diverse array of 1,3,4-selenadiazole derivatives from easily accessible precursors aldehydes, hydrazine and elemental selenium is demonstrated in this paper. Here, KI is used as the surrogate of iodine and K2S2O8 as the oxidant. The key advantages of this protocol include an easy reaction set up, operational simplicity, high functional group tolerance and utilisation of low toxicity chemicals. Further, a radical quenching reaction was also performed to confirm the mechanistic pathway.

Abstract
Herein, an oxidant- and metal-free electrochemical selenylation reaction of chalcones with diselenides for the synthesis of 3-selenylazaflavanones and 3-selenylflavanones at room temperature was reported. The method proceeded under mild conditions, exhibited a broad substrate scope, and provided the selenylated products in moderate to excellent yields with high regio- and stereoselectivity. The reaction could also be readily scaled up with high efficiency. Detailed mechanistic studies through control experiments disclosed that a selenium-based radical might participate in this electrochemical transformation.

Abstract
Organoselenium compounds constitute an important class of substances with applications in the biological, medicinal and material sciences as well as in modern organic synthesis, attracting considerable attention from the scientific community. Therefore, the construction of the C-Se bond via facile, efficient and sustainable strategies to access complex scaffolds from simple substrates are an appealing and hot topic. Visible light can be regarded as an alternative source of energy and is associated with environmentally-friendly processes. Recently, the use of visible-light mediated seleno-functionalization has emerged as an ideal and powerful route to obtain high-value selenylated products, with diminished cost and waste. This approach, involving photo-excited substrates/catalyst and single-electron transfer (SET) between substrates in the presence of visible light has been successfully used in the versatile and direct insertion of organoselenium moieties in activated and unactivated C(sp3 )-H, C(sp2 )-H, C(sp)-H bonds as well as C-heteroatom bonds. In most cases, ease of operation and accessibility of the light source (LEDs or commercial CFL bulbs) makes this approach more attractive and sustainable than the traditional strategies.

Abstract
Organo-seleno compounds (org-Se) have been widely used in antitumor, antiviral, and antiinflammatory therapy; antioxidation and other biological fields. As such, they have made an important contribution to overcoming various kinds of diseases, and researchers are increasingly attracted to org-Se's synthesis and functional design. This review is mainly focused on the design and synthesis of various kinds of org-Se, followed by their anticancer mechanisms such as the mitochondria mediated pathway induced by ROS, death receptor mediated pathways involving p53 phosphorylation, and the activation of the AMPK pathway to promote apoptosis. Org-Se also serves as a sensitizer in chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and an antagonist against the cytotoxic effects induced by chemotherapeutic agents. Finally, we will summarize the development of cancer-targeted org-Se containing complexes, and nanotechnology-based org-Se for anticancer application. This review could provide information for the future design of chemically innovative org-Se with anticancer potential, and shed light on the discovery of nanomaterial-based pharmaceuticals to improve drug development and formation.

Abstract
It has been found that both eugenol and isoeugenol derivatives reacted with 2-pyridinesulfenyl and 2-pyridineselenenyl halides in a regioselective mode affording products with opposite regiochemistry. Synthesis of new families of 2H,3H-[1,3]thia- and -selenazolo[3,2-a]pyridin-4-ium heterocycles has been developed by annulation reactions of 2-pyridinechalcogenyl halides with natural compounds (eugenol, isoeugenol, methyl eugenol, methyl isoeugenol, acetyl eugenol, trans-anethole) and their structural analogs. The influence of the substrate structure and the nature of halogen on the product yields are studied. The 2-pyridinesulfenyl and 2-pyridineselenenyl chlorides are more efficient reagents compared to corresponding bromides. The obtained condensed heterocycles are novel water-soluble functionalized compounds with promising biological activity.
