Multinuclear Zinc-Magnesium Hydroxide Carboxylates: A Predesigned Model System for Copolymerization of CO2 with Epoxides

Among numerous catalysts in the ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides with carbon dioxide (CO2), zinc dicarboxylate complexes are the most common type, and in the family of metal-based homogeneous catalysts, zinc and magnesium complexes have attracted widespread attention. We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of a zinc-magnesium benzoate framework templated by the central hydroxide anion with μ3-κ2:κ2:κ2 coordination mode, [ZnMg2(μ3-OH)(O2CPh)5]n (n = 1 or 2). The resulting heterometallic system forms stable Lewis acid-base adducts with tetrahydrofuran (THF) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO), which crystallize as the hexanuclear zinc-magnesium hydroxide carboxylate cluster [ZnMg2(μ3-OH)(O2CPh)5(L)2]2 (L = THF or CHO). Their X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed that the Zn center prefers 4-fold coordination and the Mg centers demonstrated the ability to accommodate higher coordination numbers, and as a result, the heterocyclic molecules are exclusively bonded to 6-fold Mg atoms. The heteronuclear carboxylate aggregates appeared active in the copolymerization reaction at elevated temperatures to produce an alternating poly(cyclohexene carbonate).

Opening a Pandora's Flask on a Prototype Catalytic Direct Arylation Reaction of Pentafluorobenzene: The Ag2CO3/Pd(OAc)2/PPh3 System

Direct C-H functionalization reactions have opened new avenues in catalysis, removing the need for prefunctionalization of at least one of the substrates. Although C-H functionalization catalyzed by palladium complexes in the presence of a base is generally considered to proceed by the CMD/AMLA-6 mechanism, recent research has shown that silver(I) salts, frequently used as bases, can function as C-H bond activators instead of (or in addition to) palladium(II). In this study, we examine the coupling of pentafluorobenzene 1 to 4-iodotoluene 2a (and its analogues) to form 4-(pentafluorophenyl)toluene 3a catalyzed by palladium(II) acetate with the commonplace PPh3 ligand, silver carbonate as base, and DMF as solvent. By studying the reaction of 1 with Ag2CO3/PPh3 and with isolated silver (triphenylphosphine) carbonate complexes, we show the formation of C-H activation products containing the Ag(C6F5)(PPh3)n unit. However, analysis is complicated by the lability of the Ag-PPh3 bond and the presence of multiple species in the solution. The speciation of palladium(II) is investigated by high-resolution-MAS NMR (chosen for its suitability for suspensions) with a substoichiometric catalyst, demonstrating the formation of an equilibrium mixture of Pd(Ar)(κ1-OAc)(PPh3)2 and [Pd(Ar)(μ-OAc)(PPh3)]2 as resting states (Ar = Ph, 4-tolyl). These two complexes react stoichiometrically with 1 to form coupling products. The catalytic reaction kinetics is investigated by in situ IR spectroscopy revealing a two-term rate law and dependence on [Pdtot/nPPh3]0.5 consistent with the dissociation of an off-cycle palladium dimer. The first term is independent of [1], whereas the second term is first order in [1]. The observed rates are very similar with Pd(PPh3)4, Pd(Ph)(κ1-OAc)(PPh3)2, and [Pd(Ph)(μ-OAc)(PPh3)]2 catalysts. The kinetic isotope effect varied significantly according to conditions. The multiple speciation of both AgI and PdII acts as a warning against specifying the catalytic cycles in detail. Moreover, the rapid dynamic interconversion of AgI species creates a level of complexity that has not been appreciated previously.

Solid state structures and solution behaviour of tetranuclear lanthanide(III) carbonate-bridged coordination compounds of chiral 3 + 3 amine macrocycle

The linking of two dinuclear macrocyclic units of large triphenolic hexaazamine by two carbonate anions results in the formation of dimeric tetranuclear Sm(III), Eu(III) and Gd(III) complexes. These complexes were initially obtained serendipitously by fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide and subsequently obtained in a rational way by the application of carbonate salts. The X-ray crystal structures of these isomorphic complexes show highly folded conformation of the macrocycle. This type of conformation is also confirmed by 2D NMR spectra of the Sm(III) complex. The ESI-MS and NMR spectra reveal also that these carbonate complexes exist in solution in two different forms that are in a concentration-dependent dynamic equilibrium.

Metal organic frameworks derived functional materials for energy and environment related sustainable applications

With the vigorous development of industrial economy, energy and environmental problems have become the most serious issues affecting people's production and life. Therefore, the demand for clean energy production, effective separation and storage is growing. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a kind of porous crystalline materials with large surface area and porosity, which is self-assembled by metal ions or clusters and organic ligands through coordination bonds. Thanks to a number of unique characteristics such as adjustable pore environment, homogeneous void structure, abundant active sites, unprecedented chemical composition tunability and functional versatility, it has been widely studied, especially for the clean energy conversion in catalysis. In this review, we focus on the research progress of clean energy in catalysis based on MOFs. Emphasis is placed on MOFs with different structures of compositions and their applications in catalytic for clean energy conversion, such as CO oxidation, CO₂ reduction and H₂ evolution. In addition, the situation of MOFs assisting environmental remediation is also briefly described. Finally, the prospects and challenges of MOFs in clean energy and the remaining issues in this field are presented.

Synthesis, Structure, and Zero-Field SMM Behavior of Homometallic Dy2, Dy4, and Dy6 Complexes

The synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of three Dy^III complexes of different nuclearity, [Dy₂(H₂L)₂(NO₃)] [NO₃]·2H₂O·CH₃OH (1), [Dy₄(HL)₂(piv)₄(OH)₂] (2), and [Dy₆(H₂L)₃(μ₃-OH)(μ₃-CO₃)₃(CH₃OH)₄(H₂O)₈] 5Cl·3H₂O (3) [(H₄L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide)], are described. This variety of complexes with the same ligand could be obtained by playing with the metal-to-ligand molar ratio, the type of Dy^III salt, the kind of base, and the presence/absence of coligand. 1 is a dinuclear complex, while 2 is a tetranuclear assembly with a butterfly-shaped topology. 3 is a homometallic hexanuclear complex that exhibits a propeller-shaped topology. Interestingly, in this complex 3, three atmospheric carbon dioxide molecules are trapped in the form of carbonate ions, which assist in holding the hexanuclear complex together. All of the complexes reveal a slow relaxation of magnetization even in zero applied field. Complex 1 is a zero-field SMM with an effective energy barrier (U_eff) of magnetization reversal equal to 87(1) K and a relaxation time of τ₀ = 6.4(3) × 10^-9 s. Under an applied magnetic field of 0.1 T, these parameters change to U_eff = 101(3) K, τ₀ = 2.5(1) × 10^-9 s. Complex 2 shows zero-field SMM behavior with U_eff = 31(2) K, τ₀ = 4.2(1) × 10^-7 s or τ₀₁ = 2(1) × 10^-7 s, U_eff1 = 37(8) K, τ₀₂ = 5(6) × 10^-5 s, and U_eff2 = 8(4) by considering two Orbach relaxation processes, while 3, also a zero-field SMM, shows a double relaxation of magnetization [U_eff1 = 62.4(3) K, τ₀₁ = 4.6(3) × 10^-8 s, and U_eff1 = 2(1) K, τ₀₂ = 4.6(2) × 10^-5 s]. The ab initio calculations indicated that in these complexes, the Kramer's ground doublet is characterized by an axial g-tensor with the prevalence of the m_J = ±15/2 component, as well as that due to the weak magnetic coupling between the metal centers, the magnetic relaxation, which is dominated by the single Dy^III centers rather than by the exchange-coupled states, takes place via Raman/Orbach or TA-QTM. Moreover, theoretical calculations support a toroidal magnetic state for complex 2.

Mechanochemical vs Wet Approach for Directing CO2 Capture toward Various Carbonate and Bicarbonate Networks

The distinct research areas related to CO₂ capture and mechanochemistry are both highly attractive in the context of green chemistry. However, merger of these two areas, i.e., mechanochemical CO₂ capture, is still in an early stage of development. Here, the application of biguanidine as an active species for CO₂ capture is investigated using both solution-based and liquid-assisted mechanochemical approaches, which lead to a variety of biguanidinium carbonate and bicarbonate hydrogen-bonded networks. We demonstrate that in solution, the formation of the carbonate vs bicarbonate networks can be directed by the organic solvent, while, remarkably, in the liquid-assisted mechanochemical synthesis employing the same solvents as additives, the selectivity in network formation is inversed. In general, our findings support the view of mechanochemistry not only as a sustainable alternative but rather as a complementary strategy to solution-based synthesis.

Highly water-soluble dimeric and trimeric lanthanide carbonates with ethylenediaminetetraacetates as precursors of catalysts for the oxidative coupling reaction of methane

Highly water-soluble dimeric and trimeric lanthanide carbonates with ethylenediaminetetraacetates have been obtained. Their coordination modes provide a model for the oxidative coupling of methane of lanthanide carbonates.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, DFT Theoretical Calculationand Physico-Chemical Characterization of a New Complex Material (C6H8Cl2N2)2[Cd3Cl10]·6H2O

The chemical preparation, crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis and spectroscopic characterization of the novel cadmium (II) 2,5-dichloro-p-phenylendiaminium decachlorotricadmate(II) hexahydrate complex, (C6H8Cl2N2)2[Cd3Cl10]·6H2O, has been reported. The atomic arrangement can be described as built up by an anionic framework, formed by edge-sharing [CdCl6]2− octahedra in linear polymeric chains spreading along the a-axis, while the organic cations surround these latters. The inspection of the Hirshfeld surface analysis helps to discuss the strength of hydrogen bonds and to quantify the inter-contacts, which reveal that H…Cl/Cl…H (38.9%), H…H (13.9%), and Cd…Cl/Cl…Cd (12.4%) are the main interactions that govern the crystal packing of the studied structure. SEM/EDXwas carried out and the powder XRD confirmed the good crystallinity of the material. FT-IR and the DFT calculation reveal the good correlation between the experimental and the theoretical wavenumbers. The HOMO-LUMO energy gap was used to predict the electric conductivity of the compound. Finally, the thermal TGA/DTA analysis shows stability until 380 K.

Ring-forming transformation associated with hydrazone changes of hexadecanuclear dysprosium phosphonates

{Dy16(μ6-C10H7PO3)2(μ5-C10H7PO3)8(spch)8(μ3-OH)2(μ2-OH)2(μ2-AcO)6(μ3-COO)2(DMF)2(H2O)6}·0.5CH3OH·4.5H2O (1) and {Dy16(μ5-C10H7PO3)4(μ3-C10H7PO3)12(μ2-C10H7PO3H)8(opch)4(DMF)8(MeOH)4}·2.5CH3OH·3H2O (2), where H2spch is ((E)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide, C10H7PO3H2 is 1-naphthylphosphonic acid and H2opch is (E)-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide, were successfully synthesized by varying the hydrazone ligands in the Dy-phosphonate system. It is important that the ellipsoidal core experiences a ring forming structural transformation to the supramolecular square motif upon the incorporation of an ortho-methoxy substituent into the hydrazone. Alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies of 1 and 2 suggest that similar single molecule magnet behaviors occur for these two complexes. The result represents an effective molecular assembly tactic to develop highly complicated lanthanide coordination clusters through the multicomponent self-assembly of the coalescence of phosphonate- and hydrazone-based ligands and metal salts.

Self-assembly of a nonanuclear NiII cluster via atmospheric CO2 fixation: synthesis, structure, collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry and magnetic property

A novel nonanuclear nickel(ii) cluster identified as [Ni9(OH)6(CO3)2(ba)8(Hdmpz)6(DMF)2]·EtOH·2DMF (SD/Ni9a, Hba = benzoic acid, Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole) is successfully constructed from mixed ligands. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) structural analysis confirms the composition and reveals the "drum-like" inner core structure surrounded by ba- and DMF. Six Hdmpz ligands in their neutral form further sandwich the "drum" up and down, and is hydrogen bonded with two carbonate anions that are derived from the atmospheric CO2 with the help of Et3N. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) reveals that the SD/Ni9a maintains an intact core in the solution with a slight exchange of outer ligands. Detailed collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments reveal the collision energy (CE)-promoted ligand loss and exchange between ba- and Hdmpz. Furthermore, the magnetic study shows that there is no interaction between the Ni centers at room temperature, whereas the ferromagnetic coupling between the Ni centers is found with an S = 3 spin ground state of the cluster at low temperature. Moreover, the UV-vis spectrum and the photocurrent response measurements show its good optical properties with an indirect bandgap of about 2.35 eV and fast current response upon visible light irradiation.

Striking dual functionality of a novel Pd@Eu-MOF nanocatalyst in C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond-forming and CO2 fixation reactions

Pd nanoparticles were immobilized on a highly porous, hydrothermally stable Eu-MOF via solution impregnation and H2 reduction to yield a novel Pd@Eu-MOF nanocatalyst. This composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Unprecedentedly, the Pd@Eu-MOF nanocatalyst could be applied with excellent results in two strikingly different, mechanistically distinct, reactions i.e., Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and cycloaddition of CO2 to a range of epoxides. Under the best reaction conditions, 98-99% yields have been attained in both catalytic processes. Moreover, in either case the heterogeneous catalyst was easily recovered and efficiently reused for more than four cycles, indicating its high stability and reproducibility. PXRD, TEM and XPS measurements on the recycled catalyst confirmed that it maintained its original structure and morphology; no Pd NP agglomeration was observed.

Hexnuclear Cadmium(II) Cluster Constructed from Tris(2-methylpyridyl)amine (TPA) and Azides

A novel rare hexa nuclear cadmium(II)–azide cluster, [Cd6(TPA)4(μ3-1,1,3-N3)4(μ2-1,1-N3)6](ClO4)2·2H2O (1) was isolated and structurally characterized, in which the azide ligands reveal μ-1,1,3- and μ-1,1-N3 bridging modes.

Constructing [CoII6] hexagon-centered heterometallic {Ln6Co6} (Ln = Y, Eu and Dy) clusters with a calix[8]arene ligand

Three isostructural 3d–4f polynuclear clusters {(LnIII6CoII6)(C8A)₃} (Ln = Y, Eu, Dy; C8A = p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene) feature some tripod-like entities in which three Ln₂-C8A SBUs bolster a [Co₆] hexagon.

Towards Extended Zinc Ethylsulfinate Networks by Stepwise Insertion of Sulfur Dioxide into Zn-C Bonds

The ability to utilize polluting gases in efficient metal-mediated transformations is one of the most pressing challenges of modern chemistry. Despite numerous studies on the insertion of SO₂ into M-C bonds, the chemical reaction of SO₂ with organozinc compounds remains little explored. To fill this gap, we report here the systematic study of the reaction of Et₂ Zn towards SO₂ as well as the influence of Lewis bases on the reaction course. Whereas the equimolar reaction provided a novel example of a structurally characterized organozinc ethylsulfinate compound of general formula [(EtSO₂ )ZnEt]_n , the utilization of an excess of SO₂ led to the formation of the zinc(II) bis(ethylsulfinate) compound [(EtSO₂ )₂ Zn]_n . Moreover, we have discovered that the presence of N-donor Lewis bases represents an efficient tool for the preparation of extended zinc ethylsulfinates, which in turn led to the formation of 1D [(EtSO₂ ZnEt)₂ (hmta)]_n and 2D [((EtSO₂ )₂ Zn)₂ (DABCO)]_n ⋅solv (in which solv=THF or toluene, hmta= hexamethylenetetramine, and DABCO=1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) coordination polymers, respectively. The results of DFT calculations on the reactivity of SO₂ towards selected Zn-C reactive species as well as the role of an N-donor Lewis base on the stabilization of the transition states complement the discussion.

Triethylamine-templated nanocalix Ln12 clusters of diacylhydrazone: crystal structures and magnetic properties

Three {Ln₁₂} (Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3)) nanocalix clusters with a novel ligand of N,N′-bis(o-vanillidene)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarbohydrazide (H₅ovih) were synthesized via the amine-templating strategy.

Nanoparticle/Metal-Organic Framework Composites for Catalytic Applications: Current Status and Perspective

Nanoparticle/metal-organic frameworks (MOF) based composites have recently attracted significant attention as a new class of catalysts. Such composites possess the unique features of MOFs (including clearly defined crystal structure, high surface area, single site catalyst, special confined nanopore, tunable, and uniform pore structure), but avoid some intrinsic weaknesses (like limited electrical conductivity and lack in the "conventional" catalytically active sites). This review summarizes the developed strategies for the fabrication of nanoparticle/MOF composites for catalyst uses, including the strategy using MOFs as host materials to hold and stabilize the guest nanoparticles, the strategy with subsequent MOF growth/assembly around pre-synthesized nanoparticles and the strategy mixing the precursors of NPs and MOFs together, followed by self-assembly process or post-treatment or post-modification. The applications of nanoparticle/MOF composites for CO oxidation, CO₂ conversion, hydrogen production, organic transformations, and degradation of pollutants have been discussed. Superior catalytic performances in these reactions have been demonstrated. Challenges and future developments are finally addressed.

Assembly of four 8-quinolinate-based multinuclear complexes: the effect of substituents on core structures and photoluminescence properties

Four multinuclear complexes with different core structures are synthesized. The core structures and photoluminescence properties of M(ii)–quinolinate complexes are controlled by the different substituent groups of ligands.
