Lanthanide-based self-assemblies of 2,6-pyridyldicarboxamide ligands: Recent advances and applications as next-generation luminescent and magnetic materials

Subtle adjustments for constructing multi-nuclear luminescent lanthanide organic polyhedra with triazole-based chelates

Controlled self-assembly of predetermined multi-nuclear lanthanide organic polyhedra (LOPs) still presents a challenge, primarily due to the unpredictable coordination numbers and labile coordination geometries of lanthanide ions. In this study, through introducing triazole-based chelates to increase the chelating angle of C2-symmetric linear ligands and stabilize the coordination geometry of Eu(III) centers, M4L6-type (M = EuIII, L = ligand) tetrahedra were efficiently synthesized, especially a biphenyl-bridged ligand which is well known to form M2L3-type helicates. A series of LOPs were formed and characterized by high-resolution electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (ESI-TOF-MS) and X-ray crystallography. Moreover, the europium complexes exhibit bright emission (luminescence quantum yield up to 42.4%) and circularly polarized luminescence properties (|glum| up to 4.5 × 10-2). This study provides a feasible strategy for constructing multi-nuclear luminescent LOPs towards potential applications.

Fluorescent assay for acetylcholinesterase activity and inhibitor screening based on lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials

It is of great significance for the clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) to achieve the on-site activity evaluation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the hydrolase of acetylcholine (ACh). Herein, we have developed a biosensing method endowed with considerable superiority based on the organic-inorganic hybrid composite Eu(DPA)3@Lap with excellent stability and fluorescent properties for this purpose by loading Eu3+ ions and 2,6-dipicolinic acid (DPA) into LAPONITE® (Lap). Through the comprehensive consideration of the specific hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine (ATCh) into thiocholine (TCh) by AChE, the high binding affinity of TCh to copper ion (Cu2+), and the selective fluorescence quenching ability of Cu2+, a simple Eu(DPA)3@Lap-based assay was developed to realize the rapid and convenient evaluation of AChE activity. Owning to the facile signal on-off-on response mode with a clear PET-based sensing mechanism, our assay presents favorable selectivity and sensitivity (LOD of 0.5 mU mL-1). Furthermore, the fluorescent assay was successfully applied for assessing AChE activity in human serum samples and screening potential AChE inhibitors, showing potential for application in the early diagnosis and drug screening of AD, as a new development path of AD therapy.

[α-AsW9O33]9- bridged hexagonal clusters of Ln(III) showing field induced SMM behavior: experimental and theoretical insight

Polyoxometalates (POM), as inorganic polydentate oxygen donors, provide binding opportunities for oxophilic lanthanide metal centers to construct novel Ln-substituted POM materials with exciting structures and attractive properties. Herein, we have reported four arsenotungstate [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- based lanthanide-containing polyoxometalates [Cs_xK_36-x{Ln₆(H₂O)₁₂(α-AsW₉O₃₃)₆}]·yH₂O (Ln = Er (1), Gd (2), Ho (3), and Tb (4)), which are synthesized in an alkaline medium. Complexes 1-3 are the dimeric structures of [Ln₃(H₂O)₆(α-AsW₉O₃₃)₃]^18- polyanions, whereas complex 4 is a hexamer of the polyanion [Tb (H₂O)₂(α-AsW₉O₃₃)]^6- as a building unit. In all the complexes, [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- units are staggered up and down and give rise to the chair conformation, where one [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- unit bridges two Ln(III) centers through four μ₂-oxygen and two terminal oxygen atoms, resulting in the hexagonal arrangement of lanthanides. The dynamic magnetic measurement indicates that only complex 1 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an applied dc field (1500 Oe). To gain insight into the slow relaxation of magnetization in complex 1, the ligand-field parameters and the splitting of the ground-state multiplet of the Er(III) ions have been estimated. The ab initio calculation results confirm that the ground state wave function of these molecules (1, 3, and 4) is mainly composed of a mixture of m_J states, and the non-axial crystal field (CF) terms are more predominant than the axial CF term. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 reveal that the photoexcitation O → M ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) of arsenotungstate fragments is effectively quenched due to the spatial coordination environment around the Ln(III) ion.

Coordination-Directed Self-Assembly of Functional Polynuclear Lanthanide Supramolecular Architectures

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln^III). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Features of the Preparation and Luminescence of Langmuir-Blodgett Films Based on the Tb(III) Complex with 3-Methyl-1-phenyl-4-stearoylpyrazol-5-one and 2,2'-Bipyridine

In this study, we investigated the effect of terbium ions (Tb³⁺⁾ on the subphases of the limiting area of the molecule for the complex compound (CC) TbL₃∙bipy (where HL is 3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-stearoylpyrazol-5-one and bipy is 2,2′-bipyridine). We examined the Langmuir monolayer and the change in the luminescence properties of TbL₃∙bipy-based Langmuir-Blodgett films (LBFs). The analysis of the compression isotherms, infrared, and luminescence spectra of TbL₃∙bipy LBFs was performed by varying the concentration of Tb³⁺ in the subphases. Our results demonstrate the partial dissociation of the CC at concentrations of C(Tb³⁺) < 5 × 10⁻⁴ M.

Ultra-thin films of amphiphilic lanthanide complexes: multi-colour emission from molecular monolayers

We report the synthesis and Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of 4 brightly emissive lanthanide amphiphiles that can be co-deposited to give multi-emissive ultra-thin films where two, three and four distinct lanthanide emission profiles are observed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a four-component emissive Langmuir-Blodgett film.

Azopyridine-based chiral oxazolines with rare-earth metals for photoswitchable catalysis

An azopyridine-based oxazoline was developed for utilizing azo group coordination and isomerization as a photoswitchable ligand. The ligand coordinated to rare-earth metal (RE) catalyst underwent efficient E/Z photoisomerization, suggesting tri- and bidentate coordination switching. The photoisomerization of the ligand enabled modulation of the enantioselectivity of an RE-catalyzed aminal forming reaction.

Coordination Sphere of Lanthanide Aqua Ions Resolved with Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

To resolve the fleeting structures of lanthanide Ln3+ aqua ions in solution, we (i) performed the first ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the entire series of Ln3+ aqua ions in explicit water solvent using pseudopotentials and basis sets recently optimized for lanthanides and (ii) measured the symmetry of the hydrating waters about Ln3+ ions (Nd3+, Dy3+, Er3+, Lu3+) for the first time with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). EXAFS spectra were measured experimentally and generated from AIMD trajectories to directly compare simulation, which concurrently considers the electronic structure and the atomic dynamics in solution, with experiment. We performed a comprehensive evaluation of EXAFS multiple-scattering analysis (up to 6.5 Å) to measure Ln-O distances and angular correlations (i.e., symmetry) and elucidate the molecular geometry of the first hydration shell. This evaluation, in combination with symmetry-dependent L3- and L1-edge spectral analysis, shows that the AIMD simulations remarkably reproduces the experimental EXAFS data. The error in the predicted Ln-O distances is less than 0.07 Å for the later lanthanides, while we observed excellent agreement with predicted distances within experimental uncertainty for the early lanthanides. Our analysis revealed a dynamic, symmetrically disordered first coordination shell, which does not conform to a single molecular geometry for most lanthanides. This work sheds critical light on the highly elusive coordination geometry of the Ln3+ aqua ions.

The effect of terminal N-donor aromatic ligands on the sensitization and emission of lanthanide ions in Zn2Ln (Ln = Eu, Tb) complexes with 4-biphenylcarboxylate anions

The systematic series of trinuclear carboxylate complexes [Zn₂Ln(NO₃)(phbz)₆(L)₂] (Ln = Eu, Gd, and Tb, where phbz is the anion of 4-biphenylcarboxylic acid, and L is pyridine, 2,3-lutidine or 2,2′-bipyridine) were synthesized. Luminescence properties were investigated in detail.

Photophysical and Chiroptical Properties of the Enantiomers of N,N'-Bis(1-phenylpropyl)-2,6-pyridinecarboxamide and their Chiral 9-Coordinate Ln3+ Complexes

The R,R and S,S enantiomers of N,N'-bis(1-phenylpropyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide, L(Et), react with Ln3+ ions (Ln = La, Eu, Gd, and Tb) to give stable [Ln((R,R)- and (S,S)-L(Et))3]3+ in anhydrous acetonitrile solution, as evidenced by various spectroscopic measurements, including NMR and luminescence titrations. In addition to the characteristic Eu3+ and Tb3+ luminescence bands, the steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectra of the aforementioned complexes show the residual ligand-centered emission of the 1ππ* to 3ππ* states, indicating an incomplete intersystem crossing (ISC) transfer from the 1ππ* to 3ππ* and ligand-to-Ln3+ energy transfer, respectively. The high circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity of [Eu(L(Et))3]3+ confirms that using a single enantiomer of L(Et) induces the preferential formation of one chiral [Eu(L(Et))3]3+ complex, consistent with the [EuL 3]3+ complexes formed with other ligands derived from a 2,6-pyridine dicarboxamide moiety. Furthermore, the CPL sign patterns of complexes with (R,R) or (S,S) enantiomer of L(Et) are consistent with the CPL sign pattern of related [LnL 3]3+ complexes with the (R,R) or (S,S) enantiomer of the respective ligands in this family.

Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic and electrochemiluminescence properties of three manganese(II) complexes

Three novel complexes, namely, penta-μ-acetato-bis(μ2-2-{[2-(6-chloropyridin-2-yl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}-6-methoxyphenolato)-μ-formato-tetramanganese(II), [Mn4(C13H11ClN3O2)2(C2H3O2)5.168(CHO2)0.832], 1, hexa-μ2-acetato-bis(μ2-2-{[2-(6-bromopyridin-2-yl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}-6-methoxyphenolato)tetramanganese(II), [Mn4(C13H11BrN3O2)2(C2H3O2)6], 2, and catena-poly[[μ2-acetato-acetatoaqua(μ2-2-{[2-(6-chloropyridin-2-yl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}-6-methoxyphenolato)dimanganese(II)]-μ2-acetato], [Mn2(C13H11ClN3O2)(C2H3O2)3(H2O)] n , 3, have been synthesized using solvothermal methods. Complexes 1–3 were characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are tetranuclear manganese clusters, while complex 3 has a one-dimensional network based on tetranuclear Mn4(L 1)2(CH3COO)6(H2O)2 building units (L 1 is 2-{[2-(6-chloropyridin-2-yl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}-6-methoxyphenolate). Magnetic studies reveal that complexes 1–3 display dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between MnII ions through μ2-O bridges. In addition, 1–3 also display favourable electrochemiluminescence (ECL) properties.

Construction of homochiral alkaline-lanthanide heteronuclear helicates with Na+-selective bonding in the self-assembly process

A supramolecular approach to distinguish Na+ from other biologically important metal ions was demonstrated. By designing ligands reasonably, Na+-selective bonding was achieved in the construction of homochiral alkaline-lanthanide heteronuclear helicates, which was further confirmed by mixed-metal self-assembly experiments and 1H-NMR spectra.

Unexpected linkage isomerism in chiral tetranuclear bis-tridentate (1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-picolinamide (tzpa) grids

The synthesis of a chiral bis-tridentate (1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-picolinamide (tzpa) ligand is described and its coordination chemistry with Cu(NO3)2 and [Cu(MeCN)4]PF6 is explored in the crystalline phase as well as in solution. Chiral [2 × 2] tetranuclear square grid complexes [Cu4(H21)4](NO3)8 and [Cu4(H1)4](PF6)4 were observed, and crystallographically analysed, these being linkage isomers with N4O2 and N5O coordination spheres, respectively. These come about by an unusual in situ amide deprotonation and coordination, which accompanies a CuI → CuII oxidation process.

Chiral luminescent lanthanide complexes possessing strong (samarium, SmIII) circularly polarised luminescence (CPL), and their self-assembly into Langmuir-Blodgett films

The lanthanide directed self-assembly of chiral amphiphilic 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid based ligands 1 and 2 with various Ln(CF₃SO₃)₃ (Ln = Tb^III, Sm^III, Lu^III, Dy^III) salts was studied in CH₃CN and evaluated with the expected 1 : 3 and 1 : 1 Ln : Ligand species forming in solution. Ligand chirality was retained and transferred, as depicted by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) measurements (for Tb^III and Sm^III), to the lanthanide centre upon complexation with high dissymmetry factor values for the Sm^III complexes obtained (g_lum = -0.44 and 0.29 and 0.45 and -0.23 for the ⁴G_5/2→⁶H_5/2 and the ⁴G_5/2→⁶H_7/2 transitions of Sm·1₃ and Sm·2₃, respectively). The ability of the complexes to form stable Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface was also established while Langmuir-Blodgett films of Tb·L₃ and Sm·L₃ exhibited lanthanide luminescent emission.

Stereoselective Synthesis of Molecular Square and Granny Knots

We report on the stereoselective synthesis of both molecular granny and square knots through the use of lanthanide-complexed overhand knots of specific handedness as three-crossing “entanglement synthons”. The composite knots are assembled by combining two entanglement synthons (of the same chirality for a granny knot; of opposite handedness for a square knot) in three synthetic steps: first, a CuAAC reaction joins together one end of each overhand knot. Ring-closing olefin metathesis (RCM) then affords the closed-loop knot, locking the topology. This allows the lanthanide ions necessary for stabilizing the entangled conformation of the synthons to subsequently be removed. The composite knots were characterized by ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry and the chirality of the knot stereoisomers compared by circular dichroism. The synthetic strategy of combining building blocks of defined stereochemistry (here overhand knots of Λ- or Δ-handed entanglement) is reminiscent of the chiron approach of using minimalist chiral synthons in the stereoselective synthesis of molecules with multiple asymmetric centers.

The Importance of Solvent Effects on the Mechanism of the Pfeiffer Effect

The Pfeiffer effect is observed when an optically active compound such as an amino acid is introduced to a solution containing a labile racemic metal complex, and an equilibrium shift is obtained. The "perturbation" results in an excess of one enantiomer over the other. The shift is a result of a preferential outer sphere interaction between the introduced chiral species and one enantiomeric form (Λ or Δ) of a labile metal complex. Speculations regarding the mechanism of the Pfeiffer effect have attributed observations to a singular factor such as pH, solvent polarity, or numerous other intermolecular interactions. Through the use of the lanthanide(III) complexes [Tb(DPA)₃]^3- and [Eu(DPA)₃]^3- (where DPA = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate) and the amino acids l-serine and l-proline; it is becoming clear that the mechanism is not so simply described as per the preliminary findings that are discussed in this study. It appears that the true mechanism is far more complicated than the attribute just a singular factor. This work attempts to shine light on the fact that understanding the behavior of the solvent environment may hypothetically be the key to offering a more detailed description of the mechanism.

Securing a Supramolecular Architecture by Tying a Stopper Knot

We report on a rotaxane-like architecture secured by the in situ tying of an overhand knot in the tris(2,6-pyridyldicarboxamide) region of the axle through complexation with a lanthanide ion (Lu3+ ). The increase in steric bulk caused by the knotting locks a crown ether onto the thread. Removal of the lutetium ion unties the knot, and when the axle binding site for the ring is deactivated, the macrocycle spontaneously dethreads. When the binding interaction is switched on again, the crown ether rethreads over the 10 nm length of the untangled strand. The overhand knot can be retied, relocking the threaded structure, by once again adding lutetium ions.

A luminescent europium-dipicolinic acid nanohybrid for the rapid and selective sensing of pyrophosphate and alkaline phosphatase activity

As a ubiquitous hydrolysis enzyme in phosphate metabolism, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a significant biomarker in laboratory research and clinic diagnosis. Herein, we report a highly water-soluble Eu(DPA)3@Lap nanohybrid material for the rapid and selective assay of PPi and ALP through a luminescence off-on recognition process. Eu(DPA)3@Lap was successfully prepared in an aqueous solution, and it exhibited strong luminescence emission, high photostability, and long lifetime. More interestingly, the strong luminescence of Eu(DPA)3@Lap can be remarkably quenched by Cu2+ due to the high impetus of coordination between the DPA ligand and Cu2+ ion. Using Cu2+ as a signal transducer, the luminescence could be recovered upon the addition of PPi ion owing to the formation of a Cu2+-PPi complex; thus, a luminescence turn-on assay for PPi ions was realized. Utilizing the ability of Cu2+ to differentiate between PPi and Pi, a convenient and straightforward luminescence assay for ALP activity was accomplished based on the specific dephosphorylation of PPi to Pi. To the best of our knowledge, this elaborate luminescence sensing system constitutes the first luminescent nanohybrid material based on a europium organic complex for ALP activity assay. Furthermore, the recognition process of PPi and ALP was completed in a convenient and facile mix-and-readout manner, and it revealed significant potential in point of care testing.

A folded [2 × 2] metallo-supramolecular grid from a bis-tridentate (1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-picolinamide (tzpa) ligand

A flexible ditopic ligand 1 containing two N,N,O-tridentate (1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-picolinamide chelating pockets is reported and the formation of multimetallic architectures is explored in the solid and the solution phase. The self-assembled Zn^II complex [Zn₄(1)₄](ClO₄)₈ exhibited a folded [2 × 2] square grid supramolecular architecture that selectively assembled in MeCN solution as shown using various spectroscopic techniques. The closely related Fe^II complex shows equivalent behaviour in the solid state, while a discrete dinuclear species [Cu₂(NO₃)₄1]·5MeCN was the sole product observed in the solid state from the reaction between 1 and Cu^II under similar conditions.

Key role of higher order symmetry and electrostatic ligand field design in the magnetic relaxation of low-coordinate Er(iii) complexes

Our theoretical analysis highlights that both symmetry and a suitable ligand field is required to obtain large barrier heights in SIMs. Key role of Lanthanide–halogen covalency in enhancing U_eff is discussed.
