Abstract
Two heterometallic Cu(II)/Ni(II) coordination polymers, [Cu2(Hbdea)2Ni(CN)4]n (1) and [Cu2(dmea)2Ni(CN)4]n·nH2O (2), were successfully self-assembled in water by reacting Cu(II) nitrate with H2bdea (N-butyldiethanolamine) and Hdmea (N,N-dimethylethanolamine) in the presence of sodium hydroxide and [Ni(CN)4]2-. These new coordination polymers were investigated by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and fully characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, elemental analysis, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements, and theoretical DFT and CASSCF calculations. Despite differences in crystal systems, in both compounds, each dinuclear building block [Cu2(μ-aminopolyalcoholate)2]2+ is bridged by diamagnetic [Ni(CN)4]2- linkers, resulting in 1D (1) or 2D (2) metal-organic architectures. Experimental magnetic studies show that both compounds display strong antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -602.1 cm-1 for 1 and -151 cm-1 for 2) between Cu(II) ions within the dimers mediated by the μ-O-alkoxo bridges. These results are corroborated by the broken symmetry DFT studies, which also provide further insight into the electronic structures of copper dimeric units. By reporting a facile self-assembly synthetic protocol, this study can be a model to widen a still limited family of heterometallic Cu/Ni coordination polymer materials with different functional properties.

Abstract
The veterinary 16-membered macrolide antibiotics tylosin (HTyl, 1a) and tilmicosin (HTilm, 1b) react with copper(II) ions in acetone at metal-to-ligand molar ratio of 1:2 to form blue (2) or green (3) metal(II) coordination species, containing nitrate or chloride anions, respectively. The complexation processes and the properties of 2–3 were studied by an assortment of physicochemical techniques (UV-Vis, EPR, NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis). The experimental data revealed that the main portion of copper(II) ions are bound as neutral EPR-silent dinuclear complexes of composition [Cu2(µ-NO3)2L2] (2a–b) and [Cu2(µ-Cl)2Cl2(HL)2] (3a–b), containing impurities of EPR-active mono-species [Cu(NO3)L] (2a’–b’) and [CuCl2(HL)] (3a’–b’). The possible structural variants of the dinuclear- and mono-complexes were modeled by the DFT method, and the computed spectroscopic parameters of the optimized constructs were compared to those measured experimentally. Using such a combined approach, the main coordination unit of the macrolides, involved in the complex formation, was defined to be their mycaminosyl substituent, which acts as a terminal ligand in a bidentate mode through the tertiary nitrogen atom and the oxygen from a deprotonated (2) or non-dissociated (3) hydroxyl group, respectively.

Abstract
Five novel copper(ii) complexes with pyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate esters as ligands, [Cu(NO3)(py-2tz)(H2O)3]NO3 (1), [Cu(NO3)2(py-2metz)(H2O)] (2), [Cu(NO3)2(py-2py)(H2O)]·H2O (3), [CuCl2(py-2tz)]2 (4) and [CuCl2(py-2metz)]n (5) (py-2tz is dimethyl 2-(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate, py-2metz is dimethyl 2-(4-methylthiazol-2-yl)pyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate and py-2py is dimethyl 2,2'-bipyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate), were synthesized and structurally characterized by different spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. The structure of these complexes was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, confirming the bidentate coordination mode of the corresponding pyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate ester to the Cu(ii) ion through the nitrogen atoms. The antimicrobial potential of copper(ii) complexes 1-5 was assessed against two bacterial and two Candida species. These complexes showed better growth inhibiting activity against Candida spp. with respect to the tested bacterial species, also being moderately toxic towards normal human lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5). Complexes 1 and 4 showed the greatest ability to inhibit the filamentation of C. albicans, which is an important process during fungal infection, and these two complexes efficiently inhibited the biofilm formation of C. albicans at subinhibitory concentrations. Complex 4 also successfully prevented the adhesion of C. albicans in an in vitro epithelial cell model. The mechanism of the antifungal activity of copper(ii) complexes 1-5 was studied through their interaction with ct-DNA, as one of the possible target biomolecules, by fluorescence spectroscopy and gel electrophoresis. Finally, the ability of these complexes to bind to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by fluorescence emission spectroscopy.

Abstract
Three novel coordination compounds, [Cu(ca)2(Hbae)2] (1), [Cu(va)2(Hbae)2] (2) and [Cu4(va)4(bae)4]·H2O (3), have been prepared by self-assembly reactions of copper(ii) chloride (1 and 2) or tetrafluoroborate (3) and CH3OH (1 and 3) or CH3CN (2) solution of 2-benzylaminoethanol (Hbae) and cinnamic (Hca, 1) or valeric (Hva, 2 and 3) acid. Crystallographic analysis revealed that both 1 and 2 have mononuclear crystal structures, wherein the complex molecules are H-bonded forming extended supramolecular chains. The tetranuclear structure of 3 is based on the {Cu4(μ3-O)4} core, wherein the metal atoms are bound together by μ3 oxygen bridges from 2-benzylaminoethanol forming an overall cubane-like configuration. The strong hydrogen bonding in 1-3 leads to the joining of the neighbouring molecules into 1D chains. Concentration-dependent ESI-MS studies disclosed the equilibria between di-, tri- and tetranuclear species in solutions of 1-3. All three compounds act as catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of o-aminophenol to the phenoxazinone chromophore (phenoxazinone synthase-like activity), with the maximum reaction rates of 4.0 × 10-7, 2.5 × 10-7 and 2.1 × 10-7 M s-1 for 1, 2 and 3, respectively, supported by the quantitative yield of the product after 24 h. The dependence of the reaction rates on catalyst concentrations is evidence of reaction orders higher than one relative to the catalyst. Kinetic and ESI-MS data allowed us to assume that the tetranuclear species, originating from 1, 2 and 3 in solution, possess considerably higher activity than the species of lower nuclearity. Mechanistic and isotopic 18O-labelling experiments suggested that o-aminophenol coordinates to CuII species with the formation of reactive intermediates, while the oxygen from 18O2 is not incorporated into the phenoxazinone chromophore.

Abstract
Optical chirality sensing of unprotected amino acids, hydroxy acids, amino alcohols, amines and carboxylic acids based on a practical mix-and-measure protocol with readily available copper, iron, palladium, manganese, cerium or rhodium salts is demonstrated. The generation of strong cotton effects allows quantitative ee analysis of small sample amounts with high speed. In contrast to previously reported assays the use of chromophoric reporter ligands and the control of metal coordination kinetics and redox chemistry are not necessary which greatly simplifies the sensing procedure with the benefit of reduced waste production and cost.
