Fluorescence resonance energy transfer in atomically precise metal nanoclusters by cocrystallization-induced spatial confinement

Understanding the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) of metal nanoparticles at the atomic level has long been a challenge due to the lack of accurate systems with definite distance and orientation of molecules. Here we present the realization of achieving FRET between two atomically precise copper nanoclusters through cocrystallization-induced spatial confinement. In this study, we demonstrate the establishment of FRET in a cocrystallized Cu8(p-MBT)8(PPh3)4@Cu10(p-MBT)10(PPh3)4 system by exploiting the overlapping spectra between the excitation of the Cu10(p-MBT)10(PPh3)4 cluster and the emission of the Cu8(p-MBT)8(PPh3)4 cluster, combined with accurate control over the confined space between the two nanoclusters. Density functional theory is employed to provide deeper insights into the role of the distance and dipole orientations of molecules to illustrate the FRET procedure between two cluster molecules at the electronic structure level.

Glass Disorder Modulated Luminescence in Zero-Dimensional Antimony-Chloride Coplanar Dimers for Optical Anti-counterfeiting

Zero-dimensional metal halides have received wide attention due to their structural diversity, strong quantum confinement, and associated excellent photoluminescence properties. A reversible and tunable luminescence would be desirable for applications such as anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and artificial intelligence. Yet, these materials are underexplored, with little known about their luminescence tuning mechanisms. Here we report a pyramidal coplanar dimer, (TBA)Sb2Cl7 (TBA = tetrabutylammonium), showing broadband emission wavelength tuning (585-650 nm) by simple thermal treatment. We attribute the broad color change to structural disorder induced by varying the heat treatment temperatures. Increasing the heating temperature transitions the material from long-range ordered crystalline phase to highly disordered glassy phase. The latter exhibits stronger electron-phonon coupling, enhancing the self-trapped exciton emission efficiency. The work provides a new material platform for manifold optical anti-counterfeiting applications and sheds light on the emission color tuning mechanisms for further design of stimuli-responsive materials.

Thermochromic Polymer Nanocomposites for the Heat Detection System: Recent Progress on Properties, Applications, and Challenges

Reversible thermochromic polymers have emerged as compelling candidates in recent years, captivating attention for their application in heat detection systems. This comprehensive review navigates through the multifaceted landscape, intricately exploring both the virtues and hurdles inherent in their integration within these systems. Their innate capacity to change colour in response to temperature fluctuations renders reversible thermochromic nanocomposites promising assets for heat detection technologies. However, despite their inherent potential, certain barriers hinder their widespread adoption. Factors such as a restricted colour spectrum, reliance on external triggers, and cost considerations have restrained their pervasive use. For instance, these polymer-based materials exhibit utility in the domain of building insulation, where their colour-changing ability serves as a beacon, flagging areas of heat loss or inadequate insulation, thus alerting building managers and homeowners to potential energy inefficiencies. Nevertheless, the limited range of discernible colours may impede precise temperature differentiation. Additionally, dependency on external stimuli, such as electricity or UV light, can complicate implementation and inflate costs. Realising the full potential of these polymer-based materials in heat detection systems necessitates addressing these challenges head-on. Continuous research endeavours aimed at augmenting colour diversity and diminishing reliance on external stimuli offer promising avenues to enhance their efficacy. Hence, this review aims to delve into the intricate nuances surrounding reversible thermochromic nanocomposites, highlighting their transformative potential in heat detection and sensing. By exploring their mechanisms, properties, and current applications, this manuscript endeavours to shed light on their significance, providing insights crucial for further research and potential applications.

Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

A Comprehensive Analysis of Luminescent Crystallized Cu Nanoclusters

Photoluminescence (PL) emission is an intriguing characteristic displayed by atomically precise d10 metal nanoclusters (NCs), renowned for their meticulous atomic arrangements, which have captivated the scientific community. Cu(I) NCs are a focal point in extensive research due to their abundance, cost-effectiveness, and unique luminescent attributes. Despite similar core sizes, their luminescent characteristics vary, influenced by multiple factors. Progress hinges on synthesizing new NCs and modifying existing ones, with postsynthetic alterations impacting emission properties. The rapid advancements in this field pose challenges in discerning essential points for excelling amidst competition with other d10 NCs. This Perspective explores the intricate origins of PL emission in Cu(I) NCs, providing a comprehensive review of their correlated structural architectures. Understanding the mechanistic origin of PL emission in each cluster is crucial for correlating diverse characteristics, contributing to a deeper comprehension from both fundamental and applied scientific perspectives.

Three in One: Three Different Molybdates Trapped in a Thiacalix[4]arene Protected Ag72 Nanocluster for Structural Transformation and Photothermal Conversion

Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent crucial intermediates in the formation of insoluble metal oxides from soluble metal ions, however, the rapid hydrolysis-condensation kinetics of MoVI or WVI makes the direct characterization of coexisted molecular species in a given medium extremely difficult. Silver nanoclusters have shown versatile capacity to encapsulate diverse POMs, which provides an alternative scene to appreciate landscape of POMs in atomic precision. Here, we report a thiacalix[4]arene protected silver nanocluster (Ag72b) that simultaneously encapsulates three kinds of molybdates (MoO4 2- , Mo6 O22 8- and Mo7 O25 8- ) in situ transformed from classic Lindqvist Mo6 O19 2- , providing more deep understanding on the structural diversity and condensation growth route of POMs in solution. Ag72b is the first silver nanocluster trapping so many kinds of molybdates, which in turn exert collective template effect to aggregate silver atoms into a nanocluster. The post-reaction of Ag72b with AgOAc or PhCOOAg produces a discrete Ag24 nanocluster (Ag24a) or an Ag28 nanocluster based 1D chain structure (Ag28a), respectively. Moreover, the post-synthesized Ag28a can be utilized as potential ignition material for further application. This work not only provides an important model for unlocking dynamic features of POMs at atom-precise level but also pioneers a promising approach to synthesize silver nanoclusters from known to unknown.

Responsive macrocyclic and supramolecular structures powered by platinum

Humankind's manipulation of platinum dates back more than two millennia to burial objects. Since then, its use has evolved from purely decorative purposes in jewelry to more functional applications such as in catalysts, pharmaceuticals, and bioimaging agents. Platinum offers a range of properties arguably unmatched by any other metal, including electroactivity, photoluminescence, chromic behaviour, catalysis, redox reactivity, photoreactivity, and stimuli-controlled intermetallic interactions. The vast body of knowledge generated by the exploration of these and other properties of platinum has recently merged with other areas of chemistry such as supramolecular and host-guest chemistry. This has shown us that platinum can incorporate its responsive character into supramolecular assemblies (e.g., macrocycles and polymers) to produce materials with tailorable functions and responses. In this Perspective Article, we cover some platinum-powered supramolecular structures reported by us and others, hoping to inspire new and exciting discoveries in the field.

Visible Light Responsive Dinuclear Zinc Complex Consisting of Proximally Arranged Two d10 -Zinc Centers

So far, Zn(II)-based d10 complexes have been known to be colorless unless they are accompanied by chromophoric groups, and therefore both fundamental and advanced photophysical performance of Zn centers of complexes, especially in visible-light regions has been unexplored. Here, we first demonstrate a dinuclear Zn(II) complex that shows visible light absorption using an orbital distributed over closely contacted two Zn centers experimentally determined by X-ray crystallography. A contrastive study demonstrated that intermetallic orbital interaction in dinuclear Zn(II) complex is responsible for capturing visible light to exhibit orangish yellow color, whereas an analogous one without such an interaction is colorless. This work demonstrates that introduction of Zn-Zn interactions to Zn(II) molecules contradicts the common notion that Zn is unresponsive to visible light and expands the photophysical field of zinc chemistry.

Large-scale synthesis, mechanism, and application of a luminescent copper hydride nanocluster

Elucidating the structure-property relationships of ultra-small metal nanocluster with basic nuclear is of great significance for understanding the evolution mechanism in both the structures and properties of polynuclear metal nanoclusters. In this study, an ultra-small copper hydride (CuH for short) nanocluster was simply synthesized with high yield, and the large-scale preparation was also achieved. Single crystal X-ray diffractometer (SC-XRD) analysis shows that this copper NC contains a tetrahedral Cu4 core co-capped by four PPh2Py ligands and two Cl in which the existence of the central H atom in tetrahedron was further identified experimentally and theoretically. This CuH nanocluster exhibits bright yellow emission, which is proved to be the mixture of phosphorescence and fluorescence by the sensitivity of both emission intensity and lifetime to O2. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent emission spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the luminescence of CuH mainly originates from the metal-to-ligand charge transfer and cluster-centered triplet excited states. This work offers new insights into understanding the structure-property relationship of basic nuclear CuH nanocluster.

Luminescence Color and Intensity Changes of Nitridorhenium(V) Complexes Induced by Protonation/Deprotonation on the Bidentate Azolylpyridine Ligands

Tricyanidonitridorhenium(V) complexes with azolylpyridines, namely, [ReN(CN)3(H-N2py)]- (1-H, H-N2py = 2-(3-pyrazolyl)pyridine) and [ReN(CN)3(L)]2- (2-a, L = 2-[1,2,3]-triazol-4-yl-pyridine anion (N3py-), and 3-a, that is, L = 2-(tetrazol-5-yl)-pyridine anion (N4py-)), were newly synthesized and characterized. The structures of the new complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The 1-H complex includes two geometrical isomers in which an isomer is the conformation with the pyridyl (py) and pyrazolyl (pyrz) moieties of H-N2py occupying the trans site to the nitrido (the ax site) and the trans site to the cyanido (the eq site), respectively, in a bidentate fashion; the other isomer is the py and pyrz moieties coordinated to the eq and ax sites. In 2-a and 3-a, the triazolyl (trz) and tetrazoly (tetrz) moieties in N3py- and N4py- occupy the eq site, and the py moieties in N3py- and N4py- coordinate to the ax site. The complex 1-H is deprotonated upon the addition of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-one or NaOH to produce [ReN(CN)3(N2py)]2- (1-a), and 2-a is protonated upon the addition of p-toluene sulfonic acid (TsOH) to give [ReN(CN)3(H-N3py)]- (2-H) in DMSO. The protonation reaction does not occur for 3-a with TsOH in DMSO. All the complexes show one-electron redox waves of the Re(VI)/Re(V) and azolylpyridine ligand-centered processes in 0.1 M (n-C4H9)4NPF6-DMSO. All the complexes exhibit photoluminescence in DMSO and in the crystalline phase at 296 K. The emissive excited states of the complexes in DMSO were assigned to MLCT with a spin triplet nature. The emission band shifts to shorter and longer wavelengths upon protonation and deprotonation of the coordinated azolylpyridines, respectively. The emission color and intensity changes of 2-H and 2-a in the presence of acidic and basic vapors were investigated.

Solvatochromic behaviour of cyclic dithioether-functionalized triphenylamine ligands and their mechano-responsive Cu(I) coordination polymers

Cu(I)-based coordination polymers (CPs) are known as efficient emissive materials providing an eco-friendly and cost-effective platform for the development of various functional materials and sensors. In addition to the nature of the metal center, organic ligands also play a crucial role in controlling the emissive properties of coordination polymers. Herein, we report on the synthesis of dithiane- and dithiolane-substituted triphenylamine ligands L1 and L2. These ligands were found to be emissive both in the solid state and in solution. In addition, these ligands exhibit solvatochromic behaviour due to the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) phenomenon. Next, coordination behaviour of these ligands was explored with Cu(I)X salts (X = Br and Cl) and four new 1D coordination polymers [{Cu(μ2-X)2Cu}(μ2-L)]n, CP1 (X = Br, L = L1), CP2 (X = Cl, L = L1), CP3 (X = Br, L = L2), and CP4 (X = Cl, L = L2) were synthesized and crystallographically characterized. The emission behaviour of all the CPs suggests ligand-centered transitions. On mechanical grinding, emission maxima (λem) for CP1 and CP2 were blue-shifted, whereas for CP3 and CP4 red-shifts were observed. All CPs were found to emit at 448 nm with increased intensity after grinding. It is supposed that grinding is responsible for a change in the spatial arrangement (dihedral angles) of the phenyl groups of triphenylamine, causing the observed emission shifts. Furthermore, the higher emission intensity after grinding suggests the occurrence of a similar phenomenon as an aggregation-induced quenching in these CPs.

Fluorescence detection platform of metal-organic frameworks for biomarkers

Sensitive and selective detection of biomarkers is crucial in the study and early diagnosis of diseases. With the continuous development of biosensing technologies, fluorescent biosensors based on metal-organic frameworks have attracted increasing attention in the field of biomarker detection due to the combination of the advantages of MOFs, such as high specific surface area, large porosity, and structure with tunable functionality and the technical simplicity, sensitivity and efficiency and good applicability of fluorescent detection techniques. Therefore, researchers must understand the fluorescence response mechanism of such fluorescent biosensors and their specific applications in this field. Of all biomarkers applicable to such sensors, the chemical essence of nucleic acids, proteins, amino acids, dopamine, and other small molecules account for about a quarter of the total number of studies. This review systematically elaborates on four fluorescence response mechanisms: metal-centered emission (MC), ligand-centered emission (LC), charge transfer (CT), and guest-induced luminescence change (GI), presenting their applications in the detection of nucleic acids, proteins, amino acids, dopamine, and other small molecule biomarkers. In addition, the current challenges of MOFs-based fluorescent biosensors are also discussed, and their further development prospects are concerned.

Photophysical studies for Cu(i)-based halides: broad excitation bands and highly efficient single-component warm white-light-emitting diodes

Designing and synthesizing cuprous halide phosphors unifying efficient low-energy emission and a broad excitation band is still a great challenge. Herein, by rational component design, three novel Cu(i)-based metal halides, DPCu₄X₆ [DP = (C₆H₁₀N₂)₄(H₂PO₂)₆; X = Cl, Br, I], were synthesized by reacting p-phenylenediamine with cuprous halide (CuX), and they show similar structures, consisting of isolated [Cu₄X₆]^2- units separated by organic layers. Photophysical studies uncover that the highly localized excitons and rigid environment give rise to highly efficient yellow-orange photoluminescence in all compounds with the excitation band spanning from 240 to 450 nm. The bright PL in DPCu₄X₆ (X = Cl, Br) originates from self-trapped excitons due to the strong electron-phonon coupling. Intriguingly, DPCu₄I₆ features a dual-band emissive characteristic, attributed to the synergistic effect of halide/metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (X/MLCT) and triplet cluster-centered (³CC) excited states. Benefiting from the broadband excitation, a high-performance white-light emitting diode (WLED) with a high color rendering index of 85.1 was achieved using single-component DPCu₄I₆ phosphor. This work not only unveils the role of halogens in the photophysical processes of cuprous halides, but also provides new design principles for high-performance single-component WLEDs.

15N CP/MAS NMR as a Tool for the Mechanistic Study of Mechanical Stimuli-Responsive Materials: Evidence for the Conformational Change of an Emissive Dimethylacridane Derivative

Mechanochromic luminescent molecules are currently attracting considerable attention because of their promising technological applications, but understanding their mechanism of action is challenging and is thus hindering our deeper understanding of these materials. The conformational change of 9,9'-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridane derivative 1 was examined using solid-state ¹⁵N nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques without using a specifically ¹⁵N-labeled compound. A difference between the two conformers was clearly observed in the measurements and was assigned to the ⟨pl⟩ and ⟨bf⟩ spatial structures. The results were supported by quantum chemical calculations on ¹⁵N NMR chemical shifts of each isomer. The technique presented here can clearly identify the structural changes caused by crushing a powder sample. Such structural changes are difficult to determine using X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements.

Scissor-like Au4Cu2 Cluster with Phosphorescent Mechanochromism and Thermochromism

Reaction of [Au(tht)2](ClO4) (tht = tetrahydrothiophene), [Cu(CH3CN)4](ClO4), 3,6-di-tert-butyl-1,8-diethynyl-9H-carbazole (H3decz), and bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether (POP) in the presence of triethylamine (NEt3) gave the cluster complex Au4Cu2(decz)2(POP)2 as yellow crystals. As revealed by X-ray crystallography, the Au4Cu2 cluster exhibits scissor-like structure sustained by two decz and two POP ligands and stabilized by Au-Cu and Au-Au interactions. The Au4Cu2 cluster shows bright yellow to orange photoluminescence upon irradiation at >300 nm, arising from 3[π (decz)→5d (Au)] 3LMCT (ligand-to-metal charge transfer) and 3[π→π* (decz)] 3IL (intraligand) triplet states as revealed by theoretical and computational studies. When it is mechanically ground, reversible phosphorescence conversion from yellow to red is observed owing to more compact molecular packing and thus stronger intermetallic interaction. Variable-temperature luminescence studies reveal that it displays distinct red-shifts of the emission whether the temperature is elevated or lowered from ambient temperature, suggestive of exceptional thermochromic phosphorescence characteristics.

Controlling the Nature of Photoluminescence of Emissive Metal Nanoclusters

Photoluminescence (PL) serves as one of the most attractive chemical-physical properties of metal nanoclusters. However, the control over the PL nature of metal nanoclusters as fluorescence or phosphorescence remains challenging. Basically, the PL nature control concerns the transition regulation of excited electrons in nanoclusters from their excited state to the ground state. Up to the present, some cases have been reported on adjusting the PL nature of emissive nanoclusters via different means, including the composition regulation, the isomerization, the aggregation, and the temperature variation. At the same time, theoretical calculations have been performed to thoroughly understand the PL nature transformation of these emissive nanoclusters in terms of their electronic structures and transition pathways. This Concept highlights and reviews the recent progress in controlling the PL nature of emissive nanoclusters as fluorescence or phosphorescence, which hopefully paves the way for fabricating novel nanoclusters or cluster-based nanomaterials with customized PL properties.

A Versatile Luminescent Ga-Organic Framework with Multi-Emission Centers as a Blue LED and Fluorescent Probe for Low-Temperature Detection and Selective Fe3+ Sensing

The development and utilization of 3p-block based MOFs as fluorescent materials has attracted significant attention in recent years. Herein, we have successfully constructed a versatile luminescent Ga-MOF (SNNU-63) with a 3d¹⁰ configuration and a large ligand twist configuration. Interestingly, the as-synthesized Ga-MOF exhibits excellent luminescence property and a good material for blue light-emitting diode (LED). At 80 K, this Ga-MOF shows multi-emission centers at 381, 462, and 494 nm. As a ratiometric thermometer, this Ga-MOF exhibits an excellent temperature sensing property with high relative sensitivity (S_m = 2.60 % K^-1 at 110 K). The fluorescence intensity ratio I₃₈₁/I₄₉₄ shows a very good fit for the Boltzmann results (80-240 K). Moreover, the luminescent Ga-MOF exhibits an excellent selective detection of Fe³⁺ over other metal ions in aqueous an medium, and the limit of detection (LOD) towards Fe³⁺ ions is calculated to be 1.227 × 10^-4 M. This work presents a versatile luminescent Ga-MOF material as a blue LED and fluorescent probe for low-temperature and selective Fe³⁺ sensing.

A Series of D-A-D Structured Disilane-Bridged Triads: Structure and Stimuli-Responsive Luminescence Studies

A series of σ-π extended octamethyltetrasilanes, which have phenothiazine, 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine, or phenoxazine (1, 2, and 3) groups as donor moieties and thienopyrazine or benzothiadiazole (a and b) groups as acceptor fragments, has been prepared, and their optical properties have been studied as an extension of our work. All six compounds exhibited fluorescence in the solid state with maximum wavelengths centered in the range of 400 and 650 nm upon excitation by a UV lamp. Compound 2b showed apparent dual emission behavior in solution, which depends on solvent polarity, and a reversible photoluminescent change under mechanical and thermal stimuli in the solid state. Quantum chemical calculations suggest the contribution of a quasi-axial conformer of the 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine moiety in 2b to the dual emission in solution and the mechanofluoroluminescence in the solid state, similarly to 1a. These studies provide new insight into the preparation of disilane-bridged triads capable of responding to multiple stimuli.

Multistimuli-Responsive Properties of Aggregated Isocyanide Cycloplatinated(II) Complexes

Here, we describe the neutral cyclometalated tert-butylisocyanide Pt^II complexes, [Pt(C^∧N)Cl(CNBu^t)] 1, the double salts [Pt(C^∧N)(CNBu^t)₂][Pt(C^∧N)Cl₂] 2, and the cationic complexes [Pt(C^∧N)(CNBu^t)₂]ClO₄ 3 [C∧N = difluorophenylpyridine (dfppy, a), 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde (ppy-CHO, b)]. A comparative study of the pseudopolymorphs 1a, 1a·CHCl₃, 1b, 1b·0.5Toluene, 1b·0.5PhF, and 3a·0.25CH₂Cl₂ reveals strong aggregation through Pt···Pt and/or π···π stacking interactions to give a variety of distinctive one-dimensional (1D) infinite chains, which modulate the photoluminescent properties. This intermolecular long-range aggregate formation is the main origin of the photoluminescent behavior of 1a and 1b complexes, which exhibit highly sensitive and reversible responses to multiple external stimuli including different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), solvents, temperatures, and pressures, with distinct color and phosphorescent color switching from green to red. Furthermore, complex 1b undergoes supramolecular self-assembly via Pt···Pt and/or π···π interactions into a polymer thin polystyrene (PS) film 10 wt % in response to toluene vapors, and 3a exhibits vapochromic and vapoluminescent behavior. Theoretical simulations on the dimer, trimer, and tetramer models of 1a and 1b have been carried out to get insight into the photophysical properties in the aggregated solid state.

Excellent upconversion luminescence and temperature sensing performance of CdMoO4:Er3+,Yb3+ phosphors

In this paper, Er³⁺/Yb³⁺ co-doped CdMoO₄ phosphors were prepared by a traditional high temperature solid state reaction method. Based on the 3D network structure of the CdMoO₄ host and the efficient Er³⁺/Yb³⁺ upconversion luminescence combinations, excellent green emission properties were observed when the prepared sample is irradiated with a laser at about 980 nm. For optical temperature sensors based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR), the prepared phosphors have excellent sensitivity to temperature in the range of 293 to 473 K. With increasing environmental temperatures, the absolute sensitivity of the CdMoO₄:0.02Er³⁺,0.08Yb³⁺ sample reached a maximum at about 473 K (S_a = 1.388% K^-1). The calculated relative sensitivity of the optical temperature sensor was S_r = 1.631% K^-1 at 293 K. This is due to the sensitive thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs) of the Er³⁺ ions (²H_11/2 and ⁴S_3/2) in the CdMoO₄ structure. Therefore, it is shown that the prepared CdMoO₄:0.02Er³⁺,0.08Yb³⁺ phosphor has excellent applications in non-contact optical temperature measurement.

Enhancing photoluminescence efficiency of atomically precise copper(I) nanoclusters through solvent-induced structural transformation

Stimuli-Responsive Zinc (II) Coordination Polymers: A Novel Platform for Supramolecular Chromic Smart Tools

The unique role of the zinc (II) cation prompted us to cut a cross-section of the large and complex topic of the stimuli-responsive coordination polymers (CPs). Due to its flexible coordination environment and geometries, easiness of coordination-decoordination equilibria, "optically innocent" ability to "clip" the ligands in emissive architectures, non-toxicity and sustainability, the zinc (II) cation is a good candidate for building supramolecular smart tools. The review summarizes the recent achievements of zinc-based CPs as stimuli-responsive materials able to provide a chromic response. An overview of the past five years has been organised, encompassing 1, 2 and 3D responsive zinc-based CPs; specifically zinc-based metallorganic frameworks and zinc-based nanosized polymeric probes. The most relevant examples were collected following a consequential and progressive approach, referring to the structure-responsiveness relationship, the sensing mechanisms, the analytes and/or parameters detected. Finally, applications of highly bioengineered Zn-CPs for advanced imaging technique have been discussed.

Preparation of highly colloidal stable Yolk-Shell nanocomposite and its multi-stimuli responsive based on surface aggregation-induced emission (S-AIE)

Multi-stimuli responsive fluorescence probe could pave the way for monitoring more complex environmental changes. Here we prepared multifunctional nanoparticle Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@P(DMAEMA-co-TPEE), which displayed yolk-shell morphology with well-defined polymer brush. With superparamagnetic Fe₃O₄ component and pH/temperature dual sensitive PDMAEMA polymer brush, the as prepared nanoparticles (YS-NPs) exhibited as multi-stimuli responsive fluorescence probe for real-time visual monitoring of environmental changes such as magnetic field, temperature and pH. Such YS-NPs could also be applied as a sensitive detector for CO₂ in aqueous solution. Notably, the solution of YS-NPs showed high colloidal stability during the environmental changes, and surface aggregation-induced emission (S-AIE) was proposed for the aggregation of TPE residue on the surface of YS-NPs.

A new family of boat-shaped Ln8 clusters exhibiting the magnetocaloric effect and slow magnetic relaxation

Designing and synthesizing lanthanide clusters have always been a research hotspot. Herein, three lanthanide clusters with the formula [Ln₈(IN)₁₄(μ₃-OH)₈(μ₂-OH)₂(H₂O)₈]·xH₂O (Ln = 1-Gd and x = 11; Ln = 2-Dy and x = 8; Ln = 3-Eu and x = 8) have been isolated in the presence of isonicotinic acid under solvothermal conditions. Structural analysis indicates that those three compounds are isostructural, featuring boat-shaped {Ln₈} metal frameworks. Magnetic measurements reveal that 1-Gd exhibits a larger MCE with the maximum -ΔS_m value of 31.77 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 7 T, while 2-Dy displays slow magnetization relaxation. Besides, the photoluminescence properties of 3-Eu were investigated.

Nanomaterials and their applications on bio-inspired wearable electronics

Wearable electronics featuring conformal attachment, sensitive perception and intellectual signal processing have made significant progress in recent years. However, when compared with living organisms, artificial sensory devices showed undeniable bulky shape, poor adaptability, and large energy consumption. To make up for the deficiencies, biological examples provide inspirations of novel designs and practical applications. In the field of biomimetics, nanomaterials from nanoparticles to layered two-dimensional materials are actively involved due to their outstanding physicochemical properties and nanoscale configurability. This review focuses on nanomaterials related to wearable electronics through bioinspired approaches on three different levels, interfacial packaging, sensory structure, and signal processing, which comprehensively guided recent progress of wearable devices in leveraging both nanomaterial superiorities and biorealistic functionalities. In addition, opinions on potential development trend are proposed aiming at implementing bioinspired electronics in multifunctional portable sensors, health monitoring, and intelligent prosthetics.

Coordination-induced emission enhancement in copper(I) iodide coordination polymers supported by 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidines

First examples of copper(i) complexes with 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands have been synthesized. Reactions of copper(i) iodide with 2-(methylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L1) in various metal-to-ligand molar ratios in MeCN afford a ladder-type coordination polymer [Cu2L1I2]n with polymeric chains built from double-stranded (Cu2I2)n ribbons supported on both sides by μ2-N,S-L1 molecules. Although the second ligand, 2-(ethylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L2), differs from L1 only by a methylene group, its reactions with copper(i) iodide in MeCN yield not only a congenerous coordination polymer, [Cu2L2I2]n, but also [CuL2I]n, in which a similar (Cu2I2)n ribbon is decorated by N-monodentate L2 molecules. Absorption spectra of all compounds represent an interplay of metal + iodine-to-ligand charge transfer (XMLCT) and ligand-centered (LC) and cluster-centered (CC) transitions, while the emission occurs from the excited states of XMLCT nature. The luminescence of [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n is blue-shifted and greatly enhanced in comparison with that of [CuL2I]n (quantum yields: 89% and 68% for [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]nvs. 23% for [CuL2I]n at 77 K), which can be associated with a more rigid μ2-N,S coordination of 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands in [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n leading to a less distorted T1 state.

Mechanochromic properties in a mononuclear Cu(I) complex without cuprophilic interactions

Two polymorphs of Cu[(3,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)thiophene)(bis(pyrazol-1-yl)borohydrate)] (1) were isolated. The blue luminescent crystals have evident mechanochromic luminescent (MCL) properties. Based on photophysical and structural analysis, the pore structure in the blue crystals is considered to be the main reason for the MCL properties.

Recent Progress of Near-Infrared Persistent Phosphors in Bio-related and Emerging Applications

Near-infrared persistent phosphors (NIR-PPs) are an emerging category of luminescent materials that can continuously emit NIR luminescence with super-long decay time of minutes, hours, or even days after the excitation ceases. Their unique excitation-free long-lasting afterglow, together with the NIR emission, has not only attracted wide research interests in the areas of photochemistry, photophysics, spectroscopy, and materials science, but also stimulated advanced applications in biosensing, bioimaging, biomedicine, and therapy in the past decade. Beyond these bio-related applications, the active research field triggers a number of novel applications recently. In this review, a brief outline of NIR-PPs including the luminescence mechanism, main material systems, and how they were applied into various fields was depicted. Particular emphasis was put on the emerging applications outside the field of biology. Future perspectives in this exploration research area were also presented. We hope this review can help researchers grab the latest information in the fast-growing field of NIR-PPs.

Enhanced Surface Ligands Reactivity of Metal Clusters by Bulky Ligands for Controlling Optical and Chiral Properties

Surface ligands play critical roles in determining the surface properties of metal clusters. However, modulating the properties and controlling the surface structure of clusters through surface-capping-agent displacement is challenging. Herein, [Ag₁₄ (SPh(CF₃ )₂ )₁₂ (PPh₃ )₄ (DMF)₄ ] (Ag₁₄ -DMF; DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide), with weakly coordinated DMF ligands on surface silver sites, was synthesized by a mixed-ligands strategy. Owing to the high surface reactivity of Ag₁₄ -DMF, the surface ligands are labile, easily dissociated or exchanged by other ligands. Based on the enhanced surface reactivity, easy modulation of the optical properties of Ag₁₄ by reversible "on-off" DMF ligation was realized. When chiral amines were introduced to as-prepared products, all eight surface ligands were replaced by amines and the racemic Ag₁₄ clusters were converted to optically pure homochiral Ag₁₄ clusters as evidenced by circular dichroism (CD) activity and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). This work provides a new insight into modulation of the optical properties of metal clusters and atomically precise homochiral clusters for specific applications are obtained.

SC-SC Anion-Assisted Linker Exchange within a Three-Dimensional Cu(II)-Triazole Framework: A Luminescent Probe for S2

A three-dimensional (3D) binodal 3,5-connected net, {[Cu(MTP)(H2O)](NO3)}n (1) with the Schläfli symbol of {3·72}{32·75·83} can be transformed into a two-dimensional (2D) kagóme network with the Schlafli symbol of {32·62·72} in an irreversible single crystal-single crystal (SC-SC) guest-assisted linker exchange process. The product of this SC-SC represents the first luminescent probe for S2- based on triazole ligand.

Photoluminescent and Chromic Nanomaterials for Anticounterfeiting Technologies: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

Counterfeiting and inverse engineering of security and confidential documents, such as banknotes, passports, national cards, certificates, and valuable products, has significantly been increased, which is a major challenge for governments, companies, and customers. From recent global reports published in 2017, the counterfeiting market was evaluated to be $107.26 billion in 2016 and forecasted to reach $206.57 billion by 2021 at a compound annual growth rate of 14.0%. Development of anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies with multilevel securities is a powerful solution to overcome this challenge. Stimuli-chromic (photochromic, hydrochromic, and thermochromic) and photoluminescent (fluorescent and phosphorescent) compounds are the most significant and applicable materials for development of complex anticounterfeiting inks with a high-security level and fast authentication. Highly efficient anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies have been developed to reach high security and efficiency. Applicable materials for anticounterfeiting applications are generally based on photochromic and photoluminescent compounds, for which hydrochromic and thermochromic materials have extensively been used in recent decades. A wide range of materials, such as organic and inorganic metal complexes, polymer nanoparticles, quantum dots, polymer dots, carbon dots, upconverting nanoparticles, and supramolecular structures, could display all of these phenomena depending on their physical and chemical characteristics. The polymeric anticounterfeiting inks have recently received significant attention because of their high stability for printing on confidential documents. In addition, the printing technologies including hand-writing, stamping, inkjet printing, screen printing, and anticounterfeiting labels are discussed for introduction of the most efficient methods for application of different anticounterfeiting inks. This review would help scientists to design and develop the most applicable encryption, authentication, and anticounterfeiting technologies with high security, fast detection, and potential applications in security marking and information encryption on various substrates.

Solid-State Low-Temperature Thermoresponsive and Reversible Color Changes of Conjugated Polymer in Layered Structure: Beyond Infrared Thermography

Emergence of thermoresponsive and reversible color changes at low temperature is a challenging target. In general, it is not easy to induce sufficient dynamic motion of rigid molecules including chromophore at a lower temperature. The present work shows unusually low-temperature color-change properties originating from the dynamic motion of rigid conjugated polymer in solid state. The layered composites of polydiacetylene (PDA) and guest l-arginine (L-Arg) (PDA-(L-Arg)) exhibit temperature-responsive gradual color changes with reversibility in the range of 123-333 K in solid crystalline state. The dynamic properties are induced by gradual and reversible distortion of the π-conjugated main chain in response to temperature. The tuned flexibility of the layered structure facilitates motion of the rigid π-conjugated molecule at low temperature. The PDA-(L-Arg)-coated substrates are applied to visualization and quantification of 2D and 3D temperature distributions generated by cooling with liquid nitrogen. These thermographic devices afford to image lower temperature range than typical infrared thermography. The present work indicates potentials of layered architectures with tunable flexibility for emergence of dynamic properties.

Luminescent Thermochromic Silver Iodides as Wavelength-Dependent Thermometers

Luminescent thermochromic materials with a dramatic shift of emission band under different temperatures are highly desirable in temperature sensing fields. However, the design of the synthesis of such compounds remains a great challenge. In this work, two new luminescent thermochromic silver iodides, (emIm)Ag₃I₄ (1) and (emIm)Ag₂I₃ (2) (emIm = 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazole), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a [Ag₃I₄]^- anionic layer, while compound 2 possesses an infinite [Ag₂I₃]^- chain structure, both of which are charge balanced by emIm⁺ cations. Particularly, they display luminescent thermochromism with a significant wavelength shift of emission maximum with temperature change. They represent rare examples of infinite layered or chain silver iodides that show luminescent thermochromism. Furthermore, the results indicate that compounds 1 and 2 are promising wavelength-dependent luminescent thermometers.

Seeing luminescence appear as crystals crumble. Isolation and subsequent self-association of individual [(C6H11NC)2Au]+ ions in crystals

Non-luminescent, isostructural crystals of [(C6H11NC)2Au](EF6)·C6H6 (E = As, Sb) lose benzene upon standing in air to produce green luminescent (E = As) or blue luminescent (E = Sb) powders. Previous studies have shown that the two-coordinate cation, [(C6H11NC)2Au]+, self-associates to form luminescent crystals that contain linear or nearly linear chains of cations and display unusual polymorphic, vapochromic, and/or thermochromic properties. Here, we report the formation of non-luminescent crystalline salts in which individual [(C6H11NC)2Au]+ ions are isolated from one another. In [(C6H11NC)2Au](BArF24) ((BArF24)- is tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate) each cation is surrounded by two anions that prohibit any close approach of the gold ions. Crystallization of [(C6H11NC)2Au](EF6) (E = As or Sb, but not P) from benzene solution produces colorless, non-emissive crystals of the solvates [(C6H11NC)2Au](EF6)·C6H6. These two solvates are isostructural and contain columns in which cations and benzene molecules alternate. With the benzene molecules separating the cations, the shortest distances between gold ions are 6.936(2) Å for E = As and 6.9717(19) Å for E = Sb. Upon removal from the mother liquor, these crystals crack due to the loss of benzene from the crystal and form luminescent powders. Crystals of [(C6H11NC)2Au](SbF6)·C6H6 that powder out form a pale yellow powder with a blue luminescence with emission spectra and powder X-ray diffraction data that show that the previously characterized [(C6H11NC)2Au](SbF6) is formed. In the process, the distances between the gold(i) ions decrease to ∼3 Å and half of the cyclohexyl groups move from an axial orientation to an equatorial one. Remarkably, when crystals of [(C6H11NC)2Au](AsF6)·C6H6 stand in air, they lose benzene and are converted into the yellow, green-luminescent polymorph of [(C6H11NC)2Au](AsF6) rather than the colorless, blue-luminescent polymorph. Paradoxically, the yellow, green-luminescent powder that forms as well as authentic crystals of the yellow, green-luminescent polymorph of [(C6H11NC)2Au](AsF6) are sensitive to benzene vapor and are converted by exposure to benzene vapor into the colorless, blue-luminescent polymorph.
