Azide and carboxylate as simultaneous coupler for magnetic coordination polymers

Alkoxy-Bridged Dicopper(II) Cores Meet Tetracyanonickelate Linkers: Structural, Magnetic, and Theoretical Investigation of Cu/Ni Coordination Polymers

Two heterometallic Cu(II)/Ni(II) coordination polymers, [Cu2(Hbdea)2Ni(CN)4]n (1) and [Cu2(dmea)2Ni(CN)4]n·nH2O (2), were successfully self-assembled in water by reacting Cu(II) nitrate with H2bdea (N-butyldiethanolamine) and Hdmea (N,N-dimethylethanolamine) in the presence of sodium hydroxide and [Ni(CN)4]2-. These new coordination polymers were investigated by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and fully characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, elemental analysis, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements, and theoretical DFT and CASSCF calculations. Despite differences in crystal systems, in both compounds, each dinuclear building block [Cu2(μ-aminopolyalcoholate)2]2+ is bridged by diamagnetic [Ni(CN)4]2- linkers, resulting in 1D (1) or 2D (2) metal-organic architectures. Experimental magnetic studies show that both compounds display strong antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -602.1 cm-1 for 1 and -151 cm-1 for 2) between Cu(II) ions within the dimers mediated by the μ-O-alkoxo bridges. These results are corroborated by the broken symmetry DFT studies, which also provide further insight into the electronic structures of copper dimeric units. By reporting a facile self-assembly synthetic protocol, this study can be a model to widen a still limited family of heterometallic Cu/Ni coordination polymer materials with different functional properties.

Recent Advancements on Spin Engineering Strategies for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a widely employed half-electrode reaction in oxygen electrochemistry, in applications such as hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, ammonia synthesis, and electrocatalytic hydrogenation. Unfortunately, its slow kinetics limits the commercialization of such applications. It is therefore highly imperative to develop highly robust electrocatalysts with high activity, long-term durability, and low noble-metal contents. Previously intensive efforts have been made to introduce the advancements on developing non-precious transition metal electrocatalysts and their OER mechanisms. Electronic structure tuning is one of the most effective and interesting ways to boost OER activity and spin angular momentum is an intrinsic property of the electron. Therefore, modulation on the spin states and the magnetic properties of the electrocatalyst enables the changes on energy associated with interacting electron clouds with radical absorbance, affecting the OER activity and stability. Given that few review efforts have been made on this topic, in this review, the-state-of-the-art research progress on spin-dependent effects in OER will be briefed. Spin engineering strategies, such as strain, crystal surface engineering, crystal doping, etc., will be introduced. The related mechanism for spin manipulation to boost OER activity will also be discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the development of spin catalysis are presented. This review aims to highlight the significance of spin engineering in breaking the bottleneck of electrocatalysis and promoting the practical application of high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Synthesis, crystal structure and properties of poly[(μ-2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide-κ2O:O)bis-(μ-thio-cyanato-κ2N:S)cobalt(II)]

The title compound, [Co(NCS)2(C6H7NO)]n or Co(NCS)2(2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide), was prepared by the reaction of Co(NCS)2 and 2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide in methanol. All crystals obtained by this procedure show reticular pseudo-merohedric twinning, but after recrystallization, one crystal was found that had a minor component with only a very few overlapping reflections. The asymmetric unit consists of one CoII cation, two thio-cyanate anions and one 2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide coligand in general positions. The CoII cations are octa-hedrally coordinated by two O-bonding 2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide ligands, as well as two S- and two N-bonding thio-cyanate anions, and are connected via μ-1,3(N,S)-bridging thio-cyanate anions into chains that are linked by μ-1,1(O,O) bridging coligands into layers. No pronounced directional inter-molecular inter-actions are observed between the layers. The 2-methyl-pyridine coligand is disordered over two orientations and was refined using a split model with restraints. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) indicates that a pure sample was obtained and IR spectroscopy confirms that bridging thio-cyanate anions are present. Thermogravimetry and differential thermoanalysis (TG-DTA) shows one poorly resolved mass loss in the TG curve that is accompanied by an exothermic and an endothermic signal in the DTA curve, which indicate the decomposition of the 2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide coligands.

Interlayer interaction-force-tuned magnetic responses in CoII-tetrazolate-carboxylate system from canted antiferromagnet to field-induced metamagnet

Interlayer magnetic couplings of low-dimensional magnets have significantly dominated magnetic behavior through skillful regulation of interlayer interacting forces. To identify interaction-force-regulated interlayer magnetic communications, two air-stable Co(II)-based coordination polymers (CPs), a well-isolated layered structure with approximately 12.6 Å interlayer separation and a carboxylate-extended three-dimensional framework with an inter-ribbon distance of 5.8 Å, have been solvothermally fabricated by varying polycarboxylate mediators in a ternary CoII-tetrazolate-carboxylate system. The layered CP with antiparallel-arranged {Co2(COO)2}n chains interconnected only via cyclic tetrazolyl linkages behaves as a spin-canted antiferromagnet with a Néel temperature of 2.6 K, due to strong intralayer antiferromagnetic couplings and negligible interlayer magnetic interactions. In contrast, the compact three-dimensional framework with corner-sharing Δ-ribbons tightly aggregated through μ2-η1:η1-COO- is a field-induced metamagnet from a canted antiferromagnet to a weak ferromagnet with a small critical field of Hc = 90 Oe. Apparently, these interesting magnetic responses reveal the importance of an interacting force from the magnetic subunits for the magnetic behavior of the molecular magnet, greatly enriching the magnetostructural correlations of transition-metal-based molecular magnets.

Jellyfish-type Dinuclear Hafnium Azido Complexes: Synthesis and Reactivity

Di- and multinuclear hafnium complexes bridged by ligands have been rarely reported. In this article, a novel 3,5-disubstituted pyrazolate-bridged ligand LH5 with two [N2 N]2- -type chelating side arms was designed and synthesized, which supported a series of dinuclear hafnium complexes. Dinuclear hafnium azides [LHf2 (μ-1,1-N3 )2 (N3 )2 ][Na(THF)4 ] 3 and [LHf2 (μ-1,1-N3 )2 (N3 )2 ][Na(2,2,2-Kryptofix)] 4 were further synthesized and structurally characterized, featuring two sets of terminal and bridging azido ligands like jellyfishes. The reactivity of 3 under reduction conditions was conducted, leading to a formation of a tetranuclear hafnium imido complex [L1 Hf2 (μ1 -NH)(N3 ){μ2 -K}]2 5. DFT calculations revealed that the mixed imido azide 5 was generated via an intramolecular C-H insertion from a putative dinuclear HfIV -nitridyl intermediate.

Influence of proton irradiation on the magnetic properties of two-dimensional Ni(II) molecular magnet

The influence of 1.9 MeV proton irradiation on structural and magnetic properties has been explored in the two-dimensional (2D) NiSO4(1,3-phenylenediamine)2 coordination ferrimagnet. The X-ray powder diffraction and IR spectroscopy revealed that the octahedrons with Ni ion in the center remain unchanged regardless of the fluence a sample received. In contrast, proton irradiation greatly influences the hydrogen bonds in the flexible parts in which the 1,3-phenylenediamine is involved. Dc magnetic measurements revealed that several magnetic properties were modified with proton irradiation. The isothermal magnetization measured at T = 2.0 K varied with the proton dose, achieving a 50% increase in magnetization in the highest measured field µ0Hdc = 7 T or a 25% decrease in remanence. The most significant change was observed for the coercive field, which was reduced by 90% compared to the non-irradiated sample. The observed results are accounted for the increased freedom of magnetic moments rotation and the modification of intralayer exchange couplings.

Synthesis, Molecular, and Supramolecular Structures of Two Azide-Bridged Cd(II) and Cu(II) Coordination Polymers

Two 1D coordination polymers were synthesized by reaction of two ligands, 2-amino-4-picoline (2A4Pic) and quinoline-6-carboxylic acid (Qu-6-COOH) with two metal (II) nitrate (M = Cd and Cu) in the presence of azide as a linker. The synthesized metal complexes [Cd(2A4Pic)2(N3)2]n; (1) and [Cu(Qu-6-COO)(N3)(H2O)]n; (2) were isolated in single crystals and their X-ray structures revealed a 1D polymeric structure. Due to symmetry considerations, the asymmetric formula is half a [Cd(2A4Pic)2(N3)2] unit for 1 and one [Cu(Qu-6-COO)(N3)(H2O)] unit for 2. In complex 1, the Cd(II) is hexa-coordinated with two 2A4Pic molecules and four μ(1,1) azide units. Hence, the CdN6 coordination environment has a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. In 2, the Cu(II) is hexa-coordinated with three different ligands (Qu-6-COO¯, H2O and μ(1,1) N3¯) where all are connectors between the crystallographically related Cu(II) sites. Additionally, complex 2 distorted CuN2O4 octahedral geometry. In both complexes, the polymer arrays are connected by N…H hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions. Based on Hirshfeld analysis, the percentages of N…H contacts are 43.1 and 27.4% for 1 and 2, respectively, while %C...C are 5.6 and 9.3%, respectively. Analysis of Cu-N, Cu-O, and Cd-N bonds using DFT calculations showed predominantly closed-shell coordination interactions with little covalent characters. Additionally, the negatively charged ligand groups were found to compensate the positive charge of the central metal ion to a larger extent than the electrically neutral ligands.

Structure, Optical and Magnetic Properties of Two Isomeric 2-Bromomethylpyridine Cu(II) Complexes [Cu(C6H9NBr)2(NO3)2] with Very Different Binding Motives

Two isomeric 2-bromomethylpyridine Cu(II) complexes [Cu(C₆H₉NBr)₂(NO₃)₂] with 2-bromo-5-methylpyridine (L¹) and 2-bromo-4-methylpyridine (L²) were synthesized as air-stable blue materials in good yields. The crystal structures were different with [Cu(L¹)₂(NO₃)₂] (CuL¹) crystallizing in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c, while the 4-methyl derivative CuL² was solved and refined in triclinic P1¯. The orientation of the Br substituents in the molecular structure (anti (CuL¹) vs. syn (CuL²) conformations) and the geometry around Cu(II) in an overall 4 + 2 distorted coordination was very different with two secondary (axially elongated) Cu-O bonds on each side of the CuN₂O₂ basal plane in CuL¹ or both on one side in CuL². The two Br substituents in CuL² come quite close to the Cu(II) centers and to each other (Br⋯Br ~3.7 Å). Regardless of these differences, the thermal behavior (TG/DTA) of both materials is very similar with decomposition starting at around 160 °C and CuO as the final product. In contrast to this, FT-IR and Raman frequencies are markedly different for the two isomers and the UV-vis absorption spectra in solution show marked differences in the π-π* absorptions at 263 (CuL²) or 270 (CuL¹) nm and in the ligand-to-metal charge transfer bands at around 320 nm which are pronounced for CuL¹ with the higher symmetry at the Cu(II) center, but very weak for CuL². The T-dependent susceptibility measurements also show very similar results (µ_eff = 1.98 µ_B for CuL¹ and 2.00 µ_B for CuL² and very small Curie-Weiss constants of about -1. The EPR spectra of both complexes show axial symmetry, very similar averaged g values of 2.123 and 2.125, respectively, and no hyper-fine splitting.

The Construct and Interpretation of Chelated Coordination Polymers and Their Use in Nanomaterials Research

Presently, an important step from basic research to practical applications is synthesizing nanostructured materials. Metal-organic structures, as well as coordination polymers, are a diverse group of materials with a wide range of potential and properties applications. It has been difficult to get these materials into commercial use because of many drawbacks. Polymers containing chelated units are described and assessed for their advancements and problems in preparation, properties, and structure. Here, a proposed approach based on designing coordination polymeric materials with chelated units using the metal-ligand approach (CPM-CU-MA) has been introduced for a columnar-layered plan, supramolecular components, and building levels. Nanocomposite materials can be formed through the thermal transformation of coordination polymers based on donor atoms. The polymeric metal chelates (PMCs) are categorized according to luminescent coordination polymer (LCoP) development. It is classified as macrocyclic intracomplex, polynuclear, and molecular according to its macrostructure. Supramolecular networks (SMNs) can be transformed into a coordination polymer by introducing cyclo-dehydrogenation of natural building blocks on a surface. The structure-property connections of LCPs can influence a framework of liquid crystal display (LCP) that has been given based on LC phase modulators with a large modulation depth and has useful applications in LC lens. In the spatial organization of PMCs, the main focus is on the commonalities and contrasts between higher- and lower-molecular-weight chelates based on molecularly imprinted sensors (MISs) and nanomaterial sensors for a wide range of uses. New functional nanoparticles based on the molecular components have exciting potential, as demonstrated by these findings based on parameters risk factors for human health, hazards reduction in the environment, lack of cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability, and bioavailability of polymers with an overall performance of 95.3%.

Novel Co5 and Ni4 Metal Complexes and Ferromagnets by the Combination of 2-Pyridyl Oximes with Polycarboxylic Ligands

The use of 2-pyridyl oximes in metal complexes chemistry has been extensively investigated in the last few decades as a fruitful source of species with interesting magnetic properties. In this work, the initial combination of pyridine-2-amidoxime (pyaoxH₂) and 2-methyl pyridyl ketoxime (mpkoH) with isonicotinic acid (HINA) and 3,5-pyrazole dicarboxylic acid (H₃pdc) has provided access to three new compounds, [Ni₄(INA)₂(pyaox)₂(pyaoxH)₂(DMF)₂] (1), [Co₅(mpko)₆(mpkoH)₂(OMe)₂(H₂O)](ClO₄)₆ (2), and [Co₅(OH)(Hpdc)₅(H₂pdc)] (3). 1 displays a square-planar metal topology, being the first example that bears simultaneously HINA and pyaoxH₂ in their neutral or ionic form. The neighbouring Ni₄ units in 1 are held together through strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular framework. 2 and 3 are mixed-valent Co₄^IIICo^II and Co₂^IIICo^II₃ compounds with a bowtie and trigonal bipyramidal metal topology, accordingly. Direct current and alternate current magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that the exchange interactions between the Ni^II ions in 1 are ferromagnetic (J = 1.79(4) cm⁻¹), while 2 exhibits weak AC signals in the presence of a magnetic field. The syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of 1–3 are discussed in detail.

Heterometallic Dual-Liganded AE-Ln-CPs Luminescent Probes for Efficient Sensing of Fe(III) Ions

Iron ion is widely present in the environment and in biological systems, and are indispensable trace elements in living organisms, so development of an efficient and simple sensor for sensing Fe(III) ions has attracted much attention. Here, six heterometallic AE-Ln coordination polymers (CPs) [Ln₂ (pda)₄(Hnda)₂Ca₂(H₂O)₂]·MeOH (Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2); H₂pda = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, H₂nda = 2,3-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid), [Ln (pda)₂ (nda)AE₂(HCOO)(H₂O)] (AE = Sr, Ln = Eu (3), Tb (4); AE = Ba, Ln = Eu (5), Tb (6)) with two-dimensional (2D) layer structures were synthesized by hydrothermal method. All of them were characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, IR, TG, as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. They all show infinite 2D network structure, where complexes 1 and 2 are triclinic with space group of P1¯, while 3-6 belong to the monoclinic system, space group P2_1/n. The solid-state fluorescence lifetimes of complexes 1, 3 and 5 are τ_obs1 = 1930.94, 2049.48 and 2,413.04 µs, respectively, and the quantum yields Ф_total are 63.01, 60.61, 87.39%, respectively, which are higher than those of complexes 2, 4 and 6. Complexes 1-6 all exhibited efficient fluorescence quenching response to Fe³⁺ ions in water, and were not interfered by the following metal ions: Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺, Ca²⁺, Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺, Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Al³⁺, Fe²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cr³⁺, Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺. The quenching coefficient K_SV for complexes 1-6 is 1.41 × 10⁵ M⁻¹, 7.10 × 10⁴ M⁻¹, 1.70 × 10⁵ M⁻¹, 1.57 × 10⁵ M⁻¹, 9.37 × 10⁴ M⁻¹, 1.27 × 10⁵ M⁻¹, respectively. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of these complexes towards Fe³⁺ ions was also investigated. It is possible that the weak interaction formed between the complexes and the Fe³⁺ ions reduce the energy transfer from the ligand to the Ln³⁺ ion, producing the emission burst effect. This suggests that complexes 1-6 can be candidate for efficient luminescent sensor of Fe³⁺.

Structure-Property Relationships of Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Semiconducting Se-Fe-Cu-CO Polymers

A novel family of inorganic-organic-hybrid SeFe₃(CO)₉-dipyridyl two- and one-dimensional Cu polymers was synthesized via the three-component liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) of [Cu(MeCN)₄]⁺, inorganic cluster [SeFe₃(CO)₉]^2- (1), and rigid conjugated dipyridyls 4,4'-dipyridyl (dpy) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpee) or flexible conjugation-interrupted dipyridyls 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpea) and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp). They included a cluster-linked 2D polymer, [(μ₄-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(MeCN)(dpy)_1.5]_n (1-dpy-2D), a cluster-pendant 1D chain, [(μ₃-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(dpy)₃]_n (1-dpy-1D), cluster-blocked 1D polymers, [(μ₃-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(L)]_n (1-L-1D, L = bpee, bpea), and a cluster-linked 2D polymer, [(μ₄-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(bpp)₂]_n (1-bpp-2D). The reversible dimensionality transformations of these three types of polymers accompanied by the change in coordination modes of 1 were achieved by the LAG addition of 1/[Cu(MeCN)₄]⁺ or dipyridyl ligands. These polymers were found to possess tunable low-energy gaps (1.49-1.72 eV) that increased in the order regarding their structural features: cluster-linked 1-dpy-2D and 1-bpp-2D, cluster-blocked 1-bpea-1D and 1-bpee-1D, and cluster-pendant 1-dpy-1D and [(μ₃-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(L)_2.5]_n (L = bpee, 1-bpee-2D; bpea, 1-bpea-2D), indicative of the importance of the participation of cluster 1. The measured electrical conductivities of 1-bpp-2D, 1-bpea-1D, and 1-dpy-1D were 3.13 × 10^-7, 2.92 × 10^-7, and 2.30 × 10^-7 S·cm^-1, respectively, which were parallel for the trend in their energy gaps, revealing semiconducting behaviors, supported by XPS, XANES, and DFT calculations. The surprising semiconductivity of the conjugation-interrupted bpp-linked 1-bpp-2D was mainly ascribed to electron transport via C-H···O(carbonyl) hydrogen bonds and aromatic C-H···π contacts within its closely packed 2D layers. Water-/light-stable polymers 1-bpp-2D, 1-bpea-2D, and 1-dpy-1D were also demonstrated to exhibit excellent pseudo-first-order photodegradation toward nitroaromatics and organic dyes, where cluster-linked polymer 1-bpp-2D performed the best, as predicted by its structural features and narrow energy gap.

Iodine-Mediated Cyclization of Enamines to Imidazole-4-Carboxylic Derivatives with Sequential Removal of Nitrogen Atoms from TMSN3

An iodine-mediated oxidative [4+1] cyclization of enamines with TMSN₃ for the synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted imidazole-4-carboxylic derivatives has been developed. The mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction proceeds through a sequential removal of two nitrogen atoms from TMSN₃. The synthetic utility was further demonstrated with a gram-scale reaction and various derivatization transformations of the products.

Positive Cooperative Protonation of a Metal-Organic Framework: pH-Responsive Fluorescence and Proton Conduction

Positive cooperative binding, a phenomenon prevalent in biological processes, holds great appeal for the design of highly sensitive responsive molecules and materials. It has been demonstrated that metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can show positive cooperative adsorption to the benefit of gas separation, but potential binding cooperativity is largely ignored in the study of sensory MOFs. Here, we report the first demonstration of positive cooperative protonation of a MOF and the relevant pH response in fluorescence and proton conduction. The MOF is built of Zr-O clusters and bipyridyl-based tetracarboxylate linkers and has excellent hydrolytic stability. It shows a unique pH response that features two synchronous abrupt turn-off and turn-on fluorescent transitions. The abrupt transitions, which afford high sensitivity to small pH fluctuations, are due to cooperative protonation of the pyridyl sites with a Hill coefficient of 1.6. The synchronous dual-emission response, which leads to visual color change, is ascribable to proton-triggered switching between (n, π*) and (π, π*) emissions. The latter emission can be quenched by electron donating anion-dependent through photoinduced electron transfer and ground-state charge transfer. Associated with cooperative protonation, the proton conductivity of the MOF is abruptly enhanced at low pH by two orders, but overhigh acid concentration is adverse because excessive anions can interrupt the conducting networks. Our work shows new perspectives of binding cooperativity in MOFs and should shed new light on the development of responsive fluorescent MOFs and proton conductive materials.

MOFs assembled from C3 symmetric ligands: structure, iodine capture and role as bifunctional catalysts towards the oxidation-Knoevenagel cascade reaction

Three new NiII/CoII-metal organic frameworks were self-assembled by the reaction of C3 symmetric 1,3,5-tribenzoic acid (H3BTC) and 2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (4-TPT) ligands and NiII/CoII salts under solvothermal conditions. Isomorphous MOF1 and MOF2 exhibit a 3D pillar-layer framework based on binuclear M2(OH)(COO)2 units connected by tritopic BTC3- and 4-TPT ligands with a novel (3,5)-connected topology net. MOF3 displays a 3-fold interpenetrated 3D network exhibiting a (3,4)-connected topology net. The porous MOF3 can reversibly take up I2. The activated MOFs contain both Lewis acid (NiII center) and basic (uncoordinated pyridyl or carboxylic groups) sites, and act as bifunctional acid-base catalysts. The catalytic measurements demonstrate that the activated MOF3 exhibits good activities for benzyl alcohol oxidation and the Knoevenagel reaction and can be recycled and reused for at least four cycles without losing its structural integrity and high catalytic activity. Thus, the catalytic properties for the oxidation-Knoevenagel cascade reaction have also been studied.

The simultaneous use of 2-pyridyl oximes (pyridine-2 amidoxime, H2pyaox; 2-methyl pyridyl ketoxime, Hmpko) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3btc) provided access to five new compounds, namely [Zn(H2btc)2(H2pyaox)2]•2H2O (1•2H2O), [Zn(Hbtc)(H2pyaox)2]n (2), [Cu(Hbtc)(H2pyaox)]n (3), [Cu(Hbtc)(HmpKo)]n (4) and [Cu2(Hbtc)2(Hmpko)2(H2O)2]•4H2O (5•4H2O). Among them, 3 is the first example of a metal-organic framework (MOF) containing H2pyaox. Its framework can be described as a 3-c uninodal net of hcb topology with the layers being parallel to the (1,0,1) plane. Furthermore, 3 is the third reported MOF based on a 2-pyridyl oxime in general. 2 and 4 are new members of a small family of coordination polymers containing an oximic ligand. 1-5 form 3D networks through strong intermolecular interactions. Dc magnetic susceptibility studies were carried out in a crystalline sample of 3 and revealed the presence of weak exchange interactions between the metal centres; the experimental data were fitted to a theoretical model with the fitting parameters being J = -0.16(1) cm-1 and g = 2.085(1). The isotropic g value was also confirmed by electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Reactivity studies were performed for 3 in the presence of metal ions; the reaction progress was studied and discussed for Fe(NO3)3 by the use of several characterization techniques, including single crystal X-ray crystallography and IR spectroscopy.

1D Zn(II) Coordination Polymers as Effective Heterogeneous Catalysts in Microwave-Assisted Single-Pot Deacetalization-Knoevenagel Tandem Reactions in Solvent-Free Conditions

The new 1D CPs [Zn(L1)(H2O)4]n.nH2O (1) and [Zn(L2)(H2O)2]n (2) [L1 = 1,1′-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis(6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylic acid); L2 = 1,1′-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylic acid)] were prepared from flexible dicarboxylate pro-ligands (H2L1 and H2L2). Both CPs 1 and 2 were characterized by elemental, FTIR, and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Their geometry and the structural features were unveiled by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The underlying topology of the CPs was illustrated by the topological analysis of the H-bonded structure of CP 1, which revealed a 3,4,6-connected trinodal net. On the other hand, topological analysis on the hydrogen-bonded network of CP 2 showed a 2,3,3,4,6,7-connected hexanodal net. The thermal stability of the CPs was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. CPs 1 and 2 act as heterogeneous catalysts in one-pot tandem deacetalization–Knoevenagel condensation reactions under environmentally mild conditions. CPs 1 exhibits a yield of ca. 91% in a microwave-assisted solvent-free medium, whereas a slightly lower yield was obtained for CP 2 (87%) under the same experimental protocol. The recyclability of catalyst 1 was also assessed. To our knowledge, these are the first Zn(II)-based CPs to be applied as heterogeneous catalysts for the above tandem reactions under environmentally friendly conditions.
