Cobalt MOF-Based Porous Carbonaceous Spheres for Multimodal Soft Actuator Exhibiting Intricate Biomimetic Motions

The advancement of active electrode materials is essential to meet the demand for multifaceted soft robotic interactions. In this study, a new type of porous carbonaceous sphere (PCS) for a multimodal soft actuator capable of both magnetoactive and electro-ionic responses is reported. The PCS, derived from the simultaneous oxidative and reductive breakdown of specially designed cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) with varying metal-to-ligand ratios, exhibits a high specific surface area of 529 m2 g-1 and a saturated magnetization of 142.7 Am2 kg-1. The size of the PCS can be controlled through the Ostwald ripening mechanism, while the porous structure can be regulated by adjusting the metal-to-ligand mol ratio. Its exceptional compatibility with poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) enables the creation of uniform electrode, crucial for producing soft actuators that work in both magnetic and electrical fields. Operated at an ultralow voltage of 1 V, the PCS-based actuator generates a blocking force of 47.5 mN and exhibits significant bending deflection even at an oscillation frequency of 10 Hz. Employing this simultaneous multimodal actuation ensures the dynamic and complex motions of a balancing bird robot and a dynamic eagle robot. This advancement marks a significant step toward the realization of more dynamic and versatile soft robotic systems.

Metal-organic frameworks as candidates for tumor sonodynamic therapy: Designable structures for targeted multifunctional transformation

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), utilizing ultrasound (US) as the trigger, has gained popularity recently as a therapeutic approach with significant potential for treating various diseases. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), characterized by structural flexibility, are prominently emerging in the SDT realm as an innovative type of sonosensitizer, offering functional tunability and biocompatibility. However, due to the inherent limitations of MOFs, such as low reactivity to reactive oxygen species and challenges posed by the complex tumor microenvironment, MOF-based sonosensitizers with singular functions are unable to demonstrate the desired therapeutic efficacy and may pose risks of toxicity, limiting their biological applications to superficial tissues. MOFs generally possess distinctive crystalline structures and properties, and their controlled coordination environments provide a flexible platform for exploring structure-effect relationships and guiding the design and development of MOF-based nanomaterials to unlock their broader potential in biological fields. The primary focus of this paper is to summarize cases involving the modification of different MOF materials and the innovative strategies developed for various complex conditions. The paper outlines the diverse application areas of functionalized MOF-based sonosensitizers in tumor synergistic therapies, highlighting the extensive prospects of SDT. Additionally, challenges confronting SDT are briefly summarized to stimulate increased scientific interest in the practical application of MOFs and the successful clinical translation of SDT. Through these discussions, we strive to foster advancements that lead to early-stage clinical benefits for patients. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: 1. An overview for the progresses in SDT explored from a novel and fundamental perspective. 2. Different modification strategies to improve the MOFs-mediated SDT efficacy are provided. 3. Guidelines for the design of multifunctional MOFs-based sonosensitizers are offered. 4. Powerful tumor ablation potential is reflected in SDT-led synergistic therapies. 5. Future challenges in the field of MOFs-based SDT in clinical translation are suggested.

The Application of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Water Treatment and Their Large-Scale Preparation: A Review

Over the last few decades, there has been a growing discourse surrounding environmental and health issues stemming from drinking water and the discharge of effluents into the environment. The rapid advancement of various sewage treatment methodologies has prompted a thorough exploration of promising materials to capitalize on their benefits. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as porous materials, have garnered considerable attention from researchers in recent years. These materials boast exceptional properties: unparalleled porosity, expansive specific surface areas, unique electronic characteristics including semi-conductivity, and a versatile affinity for organic molecules. These attributes have fueled a spike in research activity. This paper reviews the current MOF-based wastewater removal technologies, including separation, catalysis, and related pollutant monitoring methods, and briefly introduces the basic mechanism of some methods. The scale production problems faced by MOF in water treatment applications are evaluated, and two pioneering methods for MOF mass production are highlighted. In closing, we propose targeted recommendations and future perspectives to navigate the challenges of MOF implementation in water purification, enhancing the efficiency of material synthesis for environmental stewardship.

Efficient Dye Extraction from Wastewater Using Indium-MOF-Immobilized Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membranes with Selective Filtration for Enhanced Remediation

Industrial activities have led to releasing harmful substances into the environment, necessitating the elimination of these toxic compounds from wastewater. Organic dyes, commonly found in industrial effluents, pose a threat to ecosystems and human health. Conventional treatment methods often suffer from limitations such as high cost and poor efficiency. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising materials for selective separation, including membrane filtration (MF). Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) combining MOFs with polymers offer improved filtration properties. In this study, MMMs were fabricated by incorporating synthesized In-MOF with a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer (In-MOF@PVDF MMMs) using the nonsolvent-induced phase separation process. The MMMs were evaluated for the MF of various organic dyes, achieving notable removal efficiencies. The membrane containing 20% In-MOF (M4) demonstrated exceptional performance, removing 99% of the methylene blue (MB) dye. Additionally, membrane M4 effectively filtered Azure A (AZA), Azure B (AZB), and toluidine blue O (TOLO) with a removal efficiency of 99%. However, for Rhodamine B (RHB) and methyl orange (MO), the removal efficiencies were slightly lower at 74 and 39%, respectively. Further, these membranes are utilized in selective dye filtration in the MB+/RHB+ and MB+/MO- systems, where the selectivity was found for MB. The isothermal and DFT studies revealed the membrane's behavior with dye mixtures, while water stability and regeneration studies confirmed its durability. Thus, these findings highlight the potential of In-MOF@PVDF MMMs for effective and selective dye removal in wastewater treatment applications.

Progressive Insights into Metal-Organic Frameworks and Metal-Organic Framework-Membrane Composite Systems for Wastewater Management

The sustainable management of wastewater through recycling and utilization stands as a pressing concern in the trajectory of societal advancement. Prioritizing the elimination of diverse organic contaminants is paramount in wastewater treatment, garnering significant attention from researchers worldwide. Emerging metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), bridging organic and inorganic attributes, have surfaced as novel adsorbents, showcasing pivotal potential in wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, challenges like limited water stability, elevated dissolution rates, and inadequate hydrophobicity persist in the context of wastewater treatment. To enhance the performance of MOFs, they can be modified through chemical or physical methods, and combined with membrane materials as additives to create membrane composite materials. These membrane composites, derived from MOFs, exhibit remarkable characteristics including enhanced porosity, adjustable pore dimensions, superior permeability, optimal conductivity, and robust water stability. Their ability to effectively sequester organic compounds has spurred significant research in this field. This paper introduces methods for enhancing the performance of MOFs and explores their potential applications in water treatment. It delves into the detailed design, synthesis strategies, and fabrication of composite membranes using MOFs. Furthermore, it focuses on the application prospects, challenges, and opportunities associated with MOF composite membranes in water treatment.

Highlights in Interface of Wastewater Treatment by Utilizing Metal Organic Frameworks: Purification and Adsorption Kinetics

Polluted water has become a concern for the scientific community as it causes many severe threats to living beings. Detection or removal of contaminants present in wastewater and attaining purity of water that can be used for various purposes are a primary responsibility. Different treatment methods have already been used for the purification of sewage. There is a need for low-cost, highly selective, and reusable materials that can efficiently remove pollutants or purify contaminated water. In this regard, MOFs have shown significant potential for applications such as supercapacitors, drug delivery, gas storage, pollutant adsorption, etc. The outstanding structural diversity, substantial surface areas, and adjustable pore sizes of MOFs make them superior candidates for wastewater treatment. This Review provides an overview of the interaction science and engineering (kinetic and thermodynamic aspects with interactions) underpinning MOFs for water purification. First, fundamental strategies for the synthesis methods of MOFs, different categories, and their applicability in wastewater treatment are summarized, followed by a detailed explanation of various interaction mechanisms. Finally, current challenges and future outlooks for research on MOF materials toward the adsorption of hazardous components are discussed. A new avenue for modifying their structural characteristics for the adsorption and separation of hazardous materials, which will undoubtedly direct future work, is also summarized.

Metal element-based adsorbents for phosphorus capture: Chaperone effect, performance and mechanism

Excessive phosphorus (P) enters the water bodies via wastewater discharges or agricultural runoff, triggering serious environmental problems such as eutrophication. In contrast, P as an irreplaceable key resource, presents notable supply-demand contradictions due to ineffective recovery mechanisms. Hence, constructing a system that simultaneously reduce P contaminants and effective recycling has profound theoretical and practical implications. Metal element-based adsorbents, including metal (hydro) oxides, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), exhibit a significant chaperone effect stemming from strong orbital hybridization between their intrinsic Lewis acid sites and P (Lewis base). This review aims to parse the structure-effect relationship between metal element-based adsorbents and P, and explores how to optimize the P removal properties. Special emphasis is given to the formation of the metal-P chemical bond, which not only depends on the type of metal in the adsorbent but also closely relates to its surface activity and pore structure. Then, we delve into the intrinsic mechanisms behind these adsorbents' remarkable adsorption capacity and precise targeting. Finally, we offer an insightful discussion of the prospects and challenges of metal element-based adsorbents in terms of precise material control, large-scale production, P-directed adsorption and effective utilization.

Fluorescent bacterial cellulose@Zr-MOF via in-situ synthesis for efficient enrichment and sensitive detection of Cr(VI)

In this study, for the first time, a new Zr-metal-organic framework (MOF) with strong aggregation-induced emission was successfully grown on bacterial cellulose (BC) using an in situ synthesis method, yielding the fluorescent composite nanofiber BC@Zr-MOF. The BC with abundant hydroxyl groups, which can be uniformly wrapped in the interior of the MOF layer to form BC@Zr-MOF, was used as the growth template. The resulting composite nanofibers had a higher specific surface area (1, 116 m2/g), stronger fluorescence emission and better pH stability than MOF particles. In addition, BC@Zr-MOF exhibited selective recognition and enrichment of Cr2O72- in the aqueous phase and a high adsorption capacity of 90 mg/g. Moreover, because of the high aspect ratio and good tensile strength (6.73 N/mm2), BC@Zr-MOF nanofibers could be readily made into freestanding nanopapers via vacuum filtration, thus solving the molding and recycling problems of MOFs. The facilely prepared test paper could rapidly, sensitively and selectively detect Cr2O72- with the limit of detection (LOD) of 41.8 nM, which is nearly 500 times lower than that of the national drinking water standard. Moreover, the LOD of BC@Zr-MOF nanopapers, when used in combination with circulating filtration, decreases to 6.9 nM owing to the adsorption-enrichment effect.

MOF-Based Membranes for Remediated Application of Water Pollution

Membrane separation plays a crucial role in the current increasingly complex energy environment. Membranes prepared by metal-organic framework (MOF) materials usually possess unique advantages in common, such as uniform pore size, ultra-high porosity, enhanced selectivity and throughput, and excellent adsorption property, which have been contributed to the separation fields. In this comprehensive review, we summarize various designs and synthesized strategies of free-standing MOF and composite MOF-based membranes for water treatment. Special emphases are given not only on the effects of MOF on membrane performance, removal efficiencies, and elimination mechanisms, but also on the importance of MOF-based membranes for the applications of oily and micro-pollutant removal, adsorption, separation, and catalysis. The challenges and opportunities in the future for the industrial implementation of MOF-based membranes are also discussed.

Phosphorus removal from water by the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based adsorbents: A review for structure, mechanism, and current progress

Efficacious phosphate removal is essential for mitigating eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems and complying with increasingly stringent phosphate emission regulations. Chemical adsorption, characterized by simplicity, prominent treatment efficiency, and convenient recovery, is extensively employed for profound phosphorus removal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived metal/carbon composites, surpassing the limitations of separate components, exhibit synergistic effects, rendering them tremendously promising for environmental remediation. This comprehensive review systematically summarizes MOFs-based materials' properties and their structure-property relationships tailored for phosphate adsorption, thereby enhancing specificity towards phosphate. Furthermore, it elucidates the primary mechanisms influencing phosphate adsorption by MOFs-based composites. Additionally, the review introduces strategies for designing and synthesizing efficacious phosphorus capture and regeneration materials. Lastly, it discusses and illuminates future research challenges and prospects in this field. This summary provides novel insights for future research on superlative MOFs-based adsorbents for phosphate removal.

Reproductive and whole-body toxicity of Ag-doped and -undoped ZIF-8 nanoparticles and the building blocks: An Artemia-based comparative bioassay

The present research assessed, for the first time, toxicity of ZIF-8 (1 mg/L) and the building blocks (0.1 mg/L Zn2+ and 0.4 mg/L 2-methylimidazole (2-MIm)), besides that of AgNPs@ZIF-8 (0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/L) and AgNO3 (0.1 mg/L) to aquatic organisms. Two consecutive generations (F0 & F1) of Artemia salina were exposed to these chemicals. All of the chemical treatments considerably caused mortality in F0, especially AgNPs@ZIF-8 and AgNO3, whereas F1 displayed notable tolerance and survived comparable to the control group, except in the case of AgNO3 treatment. Similarly, growth indices (weight, mainly in ZIF-8, Zn2+, and 2-MIm; length, in Ag-doped ZIF-8 and AgNO3) were significantly retarded in F0 and especially F1 of all treatments, and 2-MIm caused the greatest length retardation in F0. AgNPs@ZIF-8 (0.5 and 1 mg/L), 2-MIm, and AgNO3 postponed the ovary emergence in about 40%-60% of the exposed F0, and ZIF-8 delayed this phenomenon in some individuals of F0 and F1 up to 6 days. This temporal disturbance was also observed in time to first brood of almost all experimental F0 and F1 groups, with being over 80% of F1 exposed to ZIF-8, 2-MIm, and Zn2+, as well as about 50% of F0 treated with 2-MIm, and Zn2+. The highest neonate number was recorded for F0 and F1 exposed to AgNO3 and Zn2+, while ZIF-8 and, importantly, 2-MIm decreased the reproductivity to the lowest levels in both generations. Generally, the reproductive frequency was significantly decreased in all F0 and F1 treatments, especially 2-MIm, ZIF-8, AgNPs@ZIF-8 (0.25 & 1 mg/L). This study highlighted the neglected importance of 2-MIm in assessing overall toxicity of ZIF-8, and even other organic ligands of MOFs, and also filled a gap in the literature by investigating the potential effect of additives such as AgNPs on the toxicity of ZIF-8 and other MOFs.

Surface modification of nanofiltration membrane using polyoxometalates for improved separation and antifouling performance

In this study, polyoxometalates (POMs) as a core-modifying material was used to fabricate the nanofiltration (NF) membrane on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membrane substrate via a novel interfacial polymerization (IP) method. The formation mechanism of the POMs-modified composite membrane was proposed. The separation and antifouling properties were further investigated. After cross-linking with POMs through the new IP reaction, the modified composite membrane showed improved hydrophilicity, water flux, and salt rejection. In the humic acid fouling experiment, the POMs-modified membrane exhibited the best antifouling performance, with a flux recovery rate of up to 91.3%. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was further used to investigate the antifouling performance of the membranes. Nyquist and Bode plots of the POMs-modified membranes showed no significant change before and after fouling compared to the PVDF membrane substrate, indicating reduced fouling attachment on the modified membrane, which was consistent with the fouling index and flux variation observed during the fouling experiment. Our findings provide a simple and valuable route for fabricating POMs-functionalized NF membranes with desirable separation and antifouling performance.

Covalent Organic Framework-derived Composite Membranes for Water Treatment

Water treatment has experienced a surge in the adoption of membrane separation technology. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a class of metal-free and open-framework materials, have emerged as potential membrane materials owing to their interconnected periodic porosity, tunability, and chemical stability. However, the challenges associated with processing COF powders into self-standing membranes have spurred the emergence of COF composite membranes. This review article highlights the rationale behind developing COF composite membranes and their categories, including mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) and thin film composite (TFC) membranes. The common fabrication techniques of each category are presented. In addition, the influence of COF additives on the performance of the resultant composite membranes is systematically discussed, with a focus on the recent progress in applying COF composite membranes in the separation of different categories of water pollutants, including organic ions/molecules, toxic solvents, proteins, toxic heavy metals, and radionuclides.

MOF-Based Photocatalytic Membrane for Water Purification: A Review

Photocatalytic membranes can effectively integrate membrane separation and photocatalytic degradation processes to provide an eco-friendly solution for efficient water purification. It is of great significance to develop highly efficient photocatalytic membranes driven by visible light to ensure the long-term stability of membrane separation systems and the maximum utilization of solar energy. Metal-organic framework (MOF) is an emerging photocatalyst with a well-defined structure and tunable chemical properties, showing a broad application prospect in the construction of high-performance photocatalytic membranes. Herein, this work provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Initially, this work outlines the main tailoring strategies that facilitate the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of MOF-based photocatalysts. Next, this work introduces commonly used methods for fabricating MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Subsequently, this work discusses the application and mechanisms of MOF-based photocatalytic membranes toward organic pollutant degradation, metal ion removal, and membrane fouling mitigation. Finally, challenges in developing MOF-based photocatalytic membranes and their practical applications are presented, while also pointing out future research directions toward overcoming these existing limitations.

Mechanisms of interaction between metal-organic framework-based material and persulfate in degradation of organic contaminants (OCs): Activation, reactive oxygen generation, conversion, and oxidation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based materials have been of great public interest in persulfate (PS)-based catalytic oxidation for wastewater purification, because of their excellent performance and selectiveness in organic contaminants (OCs) removal in complex water environments. The formation, fountainhead and reaction mechanism of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in PS-based catalytic oxidation are crucial for understanding the principles of PS activation and the degradation mechanism of OCs. In the paper, we presented the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) of MOFs-based materials for PS activation, including the relationship of structure and removal efficiency, active sites and ROSs as well as OCs. In various MOFs-based materials, there are many factors will affect their performances. We discussed how various surface modification projects affected the characteristics of MOFs-based materials used in PS activation. Moreover, we revealed the process of ROSs generation by active sites and the oxidation of OCs by ROSs from the micro level. At the end of this review, we putted forward an outlook on the development trends and faced challenges of MOFs for PS-based catalytic oxidation. Generally, this review aims to clarify the formation mechanisms of ROSs via the active sites on the MOFs and the reaction mechanism between ROSs and OCs, which is helpful for reader to better understand the QSAR in various MOFs/PS systems.

Research progress of MOF-based membrane reactor coupled with AOP technology for organic wastewater treatment

MOF-based catalytic membrane reactor (MCMR), which can simultaneously achieve membrane separation and chemical catalytic degradation in an integrated system, is a cutting-edge technology for effective treatment of organic pollutants in water. The coupling of MCMR and advanced oxidation process (AOP) not only significantly improves the pollutant removal efficiency but also inhibits the membrane pollution through self-cleaning effect, thus improving the stability of MCMR. This paper reviews different MCMR systems combined with photocatalysis, Fenton oxidation, and persulfate activation, elucidates the reaction mechanism, discusses key issues to improve system effectiveness, and suggests future challenges and research directions.

Microporous Organic Network: Superhydrophobic Coating to Protect Metal-Organic Frameworks from Hydrolytic Degradation

Despite the rapid development of versatile metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the synthesis of water-stable MOFs remains challenging, which significantly limits their practical applications. Herein, a novel engineering strategy was developed to prepare superhydrophobic MOFs by an in situ fluorinated microporous organic network (FMON) coating. Through controllable modification, the resulting MOF@FMON retained the porosity and crystallinity of the pristine MOFs. Owing to the superhydrophobicity of the FMON and the feasibility of MOF synthesis, the FMON coating could be in situ integrated with various water-sensitive MOFs to provide superhydrophobicity. The coating thickness and hydrophobicity of the MOF@FMON composites were easily regulated by changing the FMON monomer concentration. The MOF@FMON composites exhibited excellent oil/water separation and catalytic activities and enhanced durability in aqueous solutions. This study provides a general approach for the synthesis of superhydrophobic MOFs, expanding the application scope of MOFs.

Recent Developments in Two-Dimensional Materials-Based Membranes for Oil-Water Separation

The industrialization witnessed in the last century has resulted in an unprecedented increase in water pollution. In particular, the water pollution induced by oil contaminants from oil spill accidents, as well as discharges from pharmaceutical, oil/gas, and metal processing industries, have raised concerns due to their potential to pose irreversible threats to the ecosystems. Therefore, the effective treating of these large volumes of oily wastewater is an inevitable challenge to address. Separating oil-water mixtures by membranes has been an attractive technology due to the high oil removal efficiency and low energy consumption. However, conventional oil-water separation membranes may not meet the complex requirements for the sustainable treatment of wastewater due to their relatively shorter life cycle, lower chemical and thermal stability, and permeability/selectivity trade-off. Recent advancements in two-dimensional (2D) materials have provided opportunities to address these challenges. In this article, we provide a brief review of the most recent advancements in oil-water separation membranes modified with 2D materials, with a focus on MXenes, graphenes, metal-organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks. The review briefly covers the backgrounds, concepts, fabrication methods, and the most recent representative studies. Finally, the review concludes by describing the challenges and future research directions.

State of the art and prospects of zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in dairy wastewater

Water is an essential resource for humans, animals, and plants. Water is also necessary for the manufacture of many products such as milk, textiles, paper, and pharmaceutical composites. During manufacturing, some industries generate a large amount of wastewater containing numerous contaminants. In the dairy industry, for each litre of drinking milk produced, about 10 L of wastewater is generated. Despite this environmental footprint, the production of milk, butter, ice cream, baby formula, etc., are essential in many households. Common contaminants in dairy wastewater include high biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), salts as well as nitrogen and phosphorus derivatives. Nitrogen and phosphorus discharges are one of the leading causes in the eutrophication of rivers and oceans. Porous materials have long held significant potential as a disruptive technology for wastewater treatment. However, thus far they have been understudied for use in dairy wastewater treatment. Ordered porous materials, such as zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs), represent classes of porous materials with significant potential for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. This review explores the different zeolites and MOFs applied in the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater and the prospect of their potential for use in wastewater management in the dairy industry.

Co@Co Cages Engineered from Hollowing MOFs for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance

Advances in hollow engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have enabled a variety of applications in catalysts, sensors, and batteries, but the hollow derivatives are often limited to hydroxides, oxides, selenides, and sulfides with the presence of additional elements from the environment. Here we have successfully synthesized hollow metallic Co@Co cages through a facile two-step strategy. Interestingly, the Co@Co(C) cages with a small amount of residual carbon show excellent catalytic performance due to the abundant exposed active sites and fast charge transfer. During the hydrogen evolution reaction, the overpotential of Co@Co(C) is as low as ∼54 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2, which is close to that of ∼38 mV for the Pt/C electrodes. The two-step synthesis strategy opens up opportunities for increasing the number of catalytic active sites and rates of charge/mass transfer while pushing the limits of materials utilization beyond that achieved in existing MOF-based nanostructures.

Fundamental Perspectives on the Electrochemical Water Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks

The recent development and implementation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based materials in electrochemical water applications are reviewed. The critical factors that affect the performances of MOFs in the electrochemical reactions, sensing, and separations are highlighted. Advanced tools, such as pair distribution function analysis, are playing critical roles in unraveling the functioning mechanisms, including local structures and nanoconfined interactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a family of highly porous materials possessing huge surface areas and feasible chemical tunability, are emerging as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with energy-water systems, such as water scarcity issues. In this contribution, the roles of MOFs are highlighted in electrochemical-based water applications (i.e., reactions, sensing, and separations), where MOF-based functional materials exhibit outstanding performances in detecting/removing pollutants, recovering resources, and harvesting energies from different water sources. Compared with the pristine MOFs, the efficiency and/or selectivity can be further enhanced via rational structural modulation of MOFs (e.g., partial metal substitution) or integration of MOFs with other functional materials (e.g., metal clusters and reduced graphene oxide). Several key factors/properties that affect the performances of MOF-based materials are also reviewed, including electronic structures, nanoconfined effects, stability, conductivity, and atomic structures. The advancement in the fundamental understanding of these key factors is expected to shed light on the functioning mechanisms of MOFs (e.g., charge transfer pathways and guest-host interactions), which will subsequently accelerate the integration of precisely designed MOFs into electrochemical architectures to achieve highly effective water remediation with optimized selectivity and long-term stability.

A review on hybrid membrane-adsorption systems for intensified water and wastewater treatment: Process configurations, separation targets, and materials applied

In the era of rapid and conspicuous progress of water treatment technologies, combined adsorption and membrane filtration systems have gained great attention as a novel and efficient method for contaminant removal from aqueous phase. Further development of these techniques for water/wastewater treatment applications will be promising for the recovery of water resources as well as reducing the water tension throughout the world. This review introduces the state-of-the-art on the capabilities of the combined adsorption-membrane filtration systems for water and wastewater treatment applications. Technical information including employed materials, superiorities, operational limitations, process sustainability and upgradeing strategies for two general configurations i.e. hybrid (pre-adsorption and post-adsorption) and integrated (film adsorbents, low pressure membrane-adsorption coupling and membrane-adsorption bioreactors) systems has been surveyed and presented. Having a systematic look at the fundamentals of hybridization/integration of the two well-established and efficient separation methods as well as spotlighting the current status and prospectives of the combination strategies, this work will be valuable to all the interested researchers working on design and development of cutting-edge wastewater/water treatment techniques. This review also draws a clear roadmap for either decision making and choosing the best alternative for a specific target in water treatment or making a plan for further enhancement and scale-up of an available strategy.

The adsorption property of in-situ synthesis of MOF in alginate gel for ofloxacin in the wastewater

Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are advantageous to the removal of organic pollutants, the general MOFs in powder form is disadvantageous to their practical applications. In-situ MOF synthesis in alginate gel is a good way to fabricate an MOF composite for many applications, which is different from blending MOF particles with polymers. In-situ synthesis of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) in alginate gel is in the form of beads with rough wrinkles and has many pores inside. When used as an absorbent, in-situ synthesis of ZIF-8 in alginate gel could remove 97.7 ± 0.9% of ofloxacin from ofloxacin solution and the equilibrium adsorption capacity is up to 160.6 ± 1.3 mg/g. During the adsorption, ofloxacin is first brought into the gel by the solvent exchange and gel microchannel adsorption, and it can then be absorbed by in-situ ZIF-8. Moreover, the adsorption efficiency can reach 85.5% even after four cycles of adsorption. We believe that in-situ synthesis of ZIF-8 in alginate gel will be an appropriate material for the removal of ofloxacin in the wastewater.

The accumulation and toxicity of ZIF-8 nanoparticles in Corbicula fluminea

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising new materials that have been intensively studied and possibly applied to various environmental remediation. However, little is known about the fate and risk of MOFs to living organisms in the water environment. Here, the toxic effects of ZIF-8 nanoparticles (NPs) on benthic organisms were confirmed by sub-chronic toxicity experiments (7 and 14 days) using Corbicula fluminea as the model organism. With exposure doses ranging from 0 to 50 mg/L, ZIF-8 NPs induced oxidative stress behaviors similar to the hormesis effect in the tissues of C. fluminea. The oxidative stress induced by ZIF-8 NPs and the released Zn²⁺ was the crucial cause of the toxic effects. Besides, we also found that the ZIF-8 NPs and dissolved Zn²⁺ may result in different mechanisms of toxicity and accumulation depending on the dosages. The Zn²⁺ release rate of ZIF-8 NPs was high at low dosages, leading to a higher proportion of Zn²⁺ taken up by C. fluminea than the particulate ZIF-8. Conversely, at high dosages, C. fluminea mainly ingested the ZIF-8 NPs and resulted in increased mortality. The results have important implications for understanding the fate and biological effects of ZIF-8 in natural aquatic environments.

Engineering Metal-Organic-Framework (MOF)-Based Membranes for Gas and Liquid Separation

Separation is one of the most energy-intensive processes in the chemical industry, and membrane-based separation technology contributes significantly to energy conservation and emission reduction. Additionally, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been widely investigated and have been found to have enormous potential in membrane separation due to their uniform pore size and high designability. Notably, pure MOF films and MOF mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are the core of the "next generation" MOF materials. However, there are some tough issues with MOF-based membranes that affect separation performance. For pure MOF membranes, problems such as framework flexibility, defects, and grain orientation need to be addressed. Meanwhile, there still exist bottlenecks for MMMs such as MOF aggregation, plasticization and aging of the polymer matrix, poor interface compatibility, etc. Herein, corresponding methods are introduced to solve these problems, including inhibiting framework flexibility, regulating synthesis conditions, and enhancing the interaction between MOF and substrate. A series of high-quality MOF-based membranes have been obtained based on these techniques. Overall, these membranes revealed desired separation performance in both gas separation (e.g., CO₂, H₂, and olefin/paraffin) and liquid separation (e.g., water purification, organic solvent nanofiltration, and chiral separation).

Advances in Application of Cellulose-MOF Composites in Aquatic Environmental Treatment: Remediation and Regeneration

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained remarkable interest in water treatment due to their fascinating characteristics, such as tunable functionality, large specific surface area, customizable pore size and porosity, and good chemical and thermal stability. However, MOF particles tend to easily agglomerate in nanoscale, thus decreasing their activity and processing convenience. It is necessary to shape MOF nanocrystals into maneuverable structures. The in situ growth or ex situ incorporation of MOFs into inexpensive and abundant cellulose-family materials can be effective strategies for the stabilization of these MOF species, and therefore can make available a range of enhanced properties that expand the industrial application possibilities of cellulose and MOFs. This paper provides a review of studies on recent advances in the application of multi-dimensional MOF-cellulose composites (e.g., aerogels, membranes, and bulk materials) in wastewater remediation (e.g., metals, dyes, drugs, antibiotics, pesticides, and oils) and water regeneration by adsorption, photo- or chemocatalysis, and membrane separation strategies. The advantages brought about by combining MOFs and cellulose are described, and the performance of MOF-cellulose is described and compared to its counterparts. The mechanisms of relative MOF-cellulose materials in processing aquatic pollutants are included. Existing challenges and perspectives for future research are proposed.

Three-Dimensional Cadmium-Organic Framework with Dual Functions of Oxygen Evolution in Water Splitting and Fenton-like Photocatalytic Removal of Organic Pollutants

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited appreciable potential as catalytic agents in the field of material science. The research of new MOFs with dual functions in electrocatalysis and photocatalysis under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is extremely pivotal for renewable energy applications. Hence, we synthesized a series of three-dimensional MOFs, namely, [Cd(bimb)₂(HITA)₂]_n (Cd-MOF 1), {[Cd(bimb)₆](NO₃)₂}_n (Cd-MOF 2), and [Cd(bimb)₄(ONO₂)₂]_n (Cd-MOF 3) (bimb = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene; H₂ITA = 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid), with applicability in the oxygen evolution reaction process and Fenton-like photocatalysis. The obtained results show that Cd-MOF 1 exhibited the most remarkable catalytic performance, affording a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at a very low overpotential of 279 mV and the smallest Tafel slope of 85.13 mV dec^-1. Meanwhile, these MOFs can generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH) under UV light irradiation with the existence of H₂O₂, enabling the rapid degradation of organic pollutants. This study provides a valuable direction for producing multifunctional and environmentally friendly catalysts.

Nano-sphere RuO2 embedded in MOF-derived carbon arrays as a dual-matrix anode for cost-effective electrochemical wastewater treatment

The electrodes' activity, surface area and cost hinder the deployment of electrochemical wastewater treatment. Using an economical microfiber-based carbon felt (CF) substrate, we design RuO₂ nanospheres confined by Co_xO cooperated carbon nanoarrays (RuO₂-Co_xO@TCF) to augment noble metal utilization and thus reduce the catalyst cost. RuO₂-Co_xO@TCF anode with vertical diffusion channels exhibits rapid generation ability of oxidizing species particularity in the presence of Cl^- ions, which play a crucial role in azo bond cleavage and benzene ring chlorination of methyl orange. As a result, the catalyst shows 99.5 % color removal and ∼ 70 % mineralization efficiency at a concentration of 60 ppm. In synthetic dyeing wastewater, RuO₂-Co_xO@TCF delivers a stable total organic carbon (TOC) removal throughout ten cycling tests. Moreover, the electricity consumption of RuO₂-Co_xO@TCF is far below the reference anode, showing great promise for dye degradation and remediation of industrial wastewater.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for Wastewater Treatment: Superior Adsorbent Materials for the Removal of Hazardous Pollutants

In previous years, different pollutants, for example, organic dyes, antibiotics, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural pollutants, have been of note to the water enterprise due to their insufficient reduction during standard water and wastewater processing methods. MOFs have been found to have potential toward wastewater management. This Review focused on the synthesis process (such as traditional, electrochemical, microwave, sonochemical, mechanochemical, and continuous-flow spray-drying method) of MOF materials. Moreover, the properties of the MOF materials have been discussed in detail. Further, MOF materials' applications for wastewater treatment (such as the removal of antibiotics, organic dyes, heavy metal ions, and agricultural waste) have been discussed. Additionally, we have compared the performances of some typical MOFs-based materials with those of other commonly used materials. Finally, the study's current challenges, future prospects, and outlook have been highlighted.

Porous Materials for Water Purification

Water pollution is a growing threat to humanity due to the pervasiveness of contaminants in water bodies. Significant efforts have been made to separate these hazardous components to purify polluted water through various methods. However, conventional remediation methods suffer from limitations such as low uptake capacity or selectivity, and current water quality standards cannot be met. Recently, advanced porous materials (APMs) have shown promise in improved segregation of contaminants compared to traditional porous materials in uptake capacity and selectivity. These materials feature merits of high surface area and versatile functionality, rendering them ideal platforms for the design of novel adsorbents. This Review summarizes the development and employment of APMs in a variety of water treatments accompanied by assessments of task-specific adsorption performance. Finally, we discuss our perspectives on future opportunities for APMs in water purification.

Highly efficient degradation of reactive black KN-B dye by ultraviolet light responsive ZIF-8 photocatalysts with different morphologies

Zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8, a type of metal-organic framework, has diverse applications in multiple catalytic fields due to its outstanding properties. Herein, ZIF-8 photocatalysts with three different morphologies (dodecahedral, pitaya-like, and leaf-like) are successfully synthesized under ambient conditions from zinc salts by altering the volume ratio of methanol and water used as a solvent. The as-synthesized ZIFs have high crystallinity with distinct BET surface areas. The experiments indicate that the ZIFs have high photocatalytic efficiency, in which the leaf-like structure (ZIF-8-F3) is the most efficient in the degradation of reactive black KN-B dye (RB5) under 365 nm UV irradiation. This is due to the efficient inhibition of electron-hole recombination or the higher migration of charge carriers in ZIF-8-F3, thus producing more reactive oxygen species, resulting in greater photocatalytic efficiency. At pH = 11, more than 95% of RB5 is degraded within 2 hours when using 1.0 g L^-1 of ZIF-8-F3. Besides, the photocatalytic and kinetic performances of ZIF-8-F3 are also investigated by optimizing the pH, initial RB5 concentration, and dosage of the used catalyst. These ZIF-8-F3 plates have been shown to be a promising material with high photostability and effective reusability, beneficial to various potential applications in environmental remediation issues.

Electrodeposition of Ag/ZIF-8-Modified Membrane for Water Remediation

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based membranes have been widely used in gas and liquid separation due to their porous structures and tunable compositions. Depending on the guest components, heterostructured MOFs can exhibit multiple functions. In the present work, we report a facile and rapid preparation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and silver nanoparticle incorporated ZIF-8 (Ag/ZIF-8)-based membranes on stainless-steel mesh (SSM) through a "green" electrodeposition method. The SSM was first coated with a Zn-plated layer which contains mainly zinc hydroxide nitrate (Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O) with a "leaf-like" morphology, providing anchoring points for the deposition of ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8. It takes only 10 min to prepare a uniform coating of Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O in aqueous conditions without the use of a strong base; this is by far the most efficient way of making zinc hydroxide nitrate nanocrystals. Following a similar electrodeposition approach, ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM can be prepared within 20 min by applying a small current. The encapsulation of Ag does not alter the chemical composition nor the crystal structure of ZIF-8. The resulting ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM have been tested for their effectiveness for rhodamine B dye removal in a fast vacuum filtration setting. Additionally, growth of E. coli was significantly inhibited after overnight incubation with Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM. Overall, we demonstrate a fast synthesis procedure to make ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM membranes for organic dye removal with excellent antimicrobial activity.

Enzyme-Linked Metal Organic Frameworks for Biocatalytic Degradation of Antibiotics

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are multi-dimensional network of crystalline material held together by bonding of metal atoms and organic ligands. Owing to unique structural, chemical, and physical properties, MOFs has been used for enzyme immobilization to be employed in different catalytic process, including catalytic degradation of antibiotics. Immobilization process other than providing large surface provides enzyme with enhanced stability, catalytic activity, reusability, and selectivity. There are various approaches of enzyme immobilization over MOFs including physical adsorption, chemical bonding, diffusion and in situ encapsulation. In situ encapsulation is one the best approach that provides extra stability from unfolding and denaturation in harsh industrial conditions. Presence of antibiotic in environment is highly damaging for human in particular and ecosystem in general. Different methods such as ozonation, oxidation, chlorination and catalysis are available for degradation or removal of antibiotics from environment, however these are associated with several issues. Contrary to these, enzyme immobilized MOFs are novel system to be used in catalytic degradation of antibiotics. Enzyme@MOFs are more stable, reusable and more efficient owing to additional support of MOFs to natural enzymes in well-established process of photocatalysis for degradation of antibiotics aimed at environmental remediation. Prime focus of this review is to present catalytic degradation of antibiotics by enzyme@MOFs while outlining their synthetics approaches, characterization, and mechanism of degradation. Furthermore, this review highlights the significance of enzyme@MOFs system for antibiotics degradation in particular and environmental remediation in general. Current challenges and future perspective of research in this field are also outlined along with concluding comments.

Recent advances on graphyne and its family members as membrane materials for water purification and desalination

Graphyne and its family members (GFMs) are allotropes of carbon (a class of 2D materials) having unique properties in form of structures, pores and atom hybridizations. Owing to their unique properties, GFMs have been widely utilized in various practical and theoretical applications. In the past decade, GFMs have received considerable attention in the area of water purification and desalination, especially in theoretical and computational aspects. More recently, GFMs have shown greater prospects in achieving optimal separation performance than the experimentally derived commercial polyamide membranes. In this review, recent theoretical and computational advances made in the GFMs research as it relates to water purification and desalination are summarized. Brief details on the properties of GFMs and the commonly used computational methods were described. More specifically, we systematically reviewed the various computational approaches employed with emphasis on the predicted permeability and selectivity of the GFM membranes. Finally, the current challenges limiting their large-scale practical applications coupled with the possible research directions for overcoming the challenges are proposed.

An Overview of the Modification Strategies in Developing Antifouling Nanofiltration Membranes

Freshwater deficiency has become a significant issue affecting many nations' social and economic development because of the fast-growing demand for water resources. Nanofiltration (NF) is one of the promising technologies for water reclamation application, particularly in desalination, water, and wastewater treatment fields. Nevertheless, membrane fouling remains a significant concern since it can reduce the NF membrane performance and increase operating expenses. Consequently, numerous studies have focused on improving the NF membrane's resistance to fouling. This review highlights the recent progress in NF modification strategies using three types of antifouling modifiers, i.e., nanoparticles, polymers, and composite polymer/nanoparticles. The correlation between antifouling performance and membrane properties such as hydrophilicity, surface chemistry, surface charge, and morphology are discussed. The challenges and perspectives regarding antifouling modifiers and modification strategies conclude this review.

Review on Metal-Organic Framework Classification, Synthetic Approaches, and Influencing Factors: Applications in Energy, Drug Delivery, and Wastewater Treatment

Metal ions or clusters that have been bonded with organic linkers to create one- or more-dimensional structures are referred to as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Reticular synthesis also forms MOFs with properly designated components that can result in crystals with high porosities and great chemical and thermal stability. Due to the wider surface area, huge pore size, crystalline nature, and tunability, numerous MOFs have been shown to be potential candidates in various fields like gas storage and delivery, energy storage, catalysis, and chemical/biosensing. This study provides a quick overview of the current MOF synthesis techniques in order to familiarize newcomers in the chemical sciences field with the fast-growing MOF research. Beginning with the classification and nomenclature of MOFs, synthesis approaches of MOFs have been demonstrated. We also emphasize the potential applications of MOFs in numerous fields such as gas storage, drug delivery, rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, and separation membranes. Lastly, the future scope is discussed along with prospective opportunities for the synthesis and application of nano-MOFs, which will help promote their uses in multidisciplinary research.

A Hydrophilic Mixed Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework Monitoring H2O in D2O

Lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) luminescent sensors monitoring the H₂O content in D₂O are still rare. We designed and built a hydrophilic mixed Ln-MOF (Eu_0.4Tb_0.6-MOF) monitoring the H₂O content in D₂O. By designing a ligand and controlling the synthesis method, we achieved a balance between the structural stability and sensing capacity. When the H₂O content ranges from 0 to 100%, the photoluminescence color of Eu_0.4Tb_0.6-MOF can change from yellow to green, which can be observed by the naked eye. The mechanism is that the photoluminescence intensity of Eu³⁺ decreases faster than that of Tb³⁺ when the H₂O content increases. The sensing mechanism was studied further by transient fluorescence spectrometry.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a highly mobile cancerogenic and teratogenic heavy metal ion. Among the varied technologies applied today to address chromium water pollution, photocatalysis offers a rapid reduction of Cr(VI) to the less toxic Cr(III). In contrast to classic photocatalysts, Metal-Organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous semiconductors that can couple the Cr(VI) to Cr(III) photoreduction to the chromium species immobilization. In this minireview, we wish to discuss and analyze the state-of-the-art of MOFs for Cr(VI) detoxification and contextualizing it to the most recent advances and strategies of MOFs for photocatalysis purposes. The minireview has been structured in three sections: (i) a detailed discussion of the specific experimental techniques employed to characterize MOF photocatalysts, (ii) a description and identification of the key characteristics of MOFs for Cr(VI) photoreduction, and (iii) an outlook and perspective section in order to identify future trends.

Application of ZIF-8 nanocomposite membrane in microbial desalination cells for simultaneous heavy metal removal and biofouling prevention

Microbial desalination cells (MDC) syndicate the advantage of physical separation by using membranes to create conditions required for Bioelectrochemical processes for the treatment of various domestic and industrial wastewater, while simultaneously desalinating saline water and generating bioenergy. However, since the introduction of this technology, heavy metal removal has been a challenge, and membrane fouling has become a major bottleneck limiting the optimum performance and efficiency of this technology. This study incorporated the use of ZIF-8 nanocomposite membrane via phase inversion mechanism in MDC for simultaneous heavy metal removal and membrane biofouling prevention. The study was conducted in two MDC systems; MDC-Control (without the ZIF-8 nanocomposite membrane) and MDC with ZIF-8 nanocomposite membrane. The results from the experiment shown that maximum removal efficiency of 85.7%, 84.3%, 84.0%, and 90.61% was obtained for Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Pb^2+, and Cd²⁺ respectively in MDC-ZIF-8, while MDC control showed 54.17%, 59.71%, 51.94%, and 54.17%. The results were well fitted to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with correlation coefficients (R²) > 0.99 in all cases for MDC-ZIF-8. A maximum adsorption capacity (Q_max) of 292 mg g^-1 was attained for all four metal ions in MDC-ZIF-8. Besides, after 38 days of continuous operation with two complete desalination for both systems, the SEM-EDS characterization analysis, polarization characteristics, and power generation revealed antifouling characteristics of ZIF-8 nanocomposite membrane incorporated in MDC. The integration of the ZIF-8 nanocomposite membrane proved to be simultaneously efficient in biofouling prevention and heavy metal removal without jeopardizing the system's ability for wastewater treatment, bioelectricity generation, and desalination processes.

Impact of industrial effluents on the environment and human health and their remediation using MOFs-based hybrid membrane filtration techniques

The hazardous risk posed by industrial effluent discharge into the ecosystem has raised a plethora of environmental issues, public health, and safety concerns. The effluents from industries such as tanning, leather, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and textiles are create significant stress on the aquatic ecosystem, which induces significant toxicity, involved in endocrine disruptions, and inhibits reproductive functions. Therefore, this review presented an overall abridgment of the effects of these effluents and their ability to synergize with modern pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetic chemicals, nanoparticles, and heavy metals. We further emphasize the metal organic framework (MOF) based membrane filtration approach for remediation of industrial effluents in comparison to the traditional remediation process. The MOF based-hybrid membrane filters provide higher reusability, better adsorption, and superior removal rates through the implication of nanotechnology, while the traditional remediation process offers poorer filtration rates and stability.
