Tailoring pillararene-based receptors for specific metal ion binding: From recognition to supramolecular assembly

Sensing Volatile Pollutants with Spin-Coated Films Made of Pillar[5]arene Derivatives and Data Validation via Artificial Neural Networks

Different types of solvents, aromatic and aliphatic, are used in many industrial sectors, and long-term exposure to these solvents can lead to many occupational diseases. Therefore, it is of great importance to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using economic and ergonomic techniques. In this study, two macromolecules based on pillar[5]arene, named P[5]-1 and P[5]-2, were synthesized and applied to the detection of six different environmentally volatile pollutants in industry and laboratories. The thin films of the synthesized macrocycles were coated by using the spin coating technique on a suitable substrate under optimum conditions. All compounds and the prepared thin film surfaces were characterized by NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), elemental analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle measurements. All vapor sensing measurements were performed via the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) optical technique, and the responses of the P[5]-1 and P[5]-2 thin-film sensors were calculated with ΔI/Io × 100. The responses of the P[5]-1 and P[5]-2 thin-film sensors to dichloromethane vapor were determined to be 7.17 and 4.11, respectively, while the responses to chloroform vapor were calculated to be 5.24 and 2.8, respectively. As a result, these thin-film sensors showed a higher response to dichloromethane and chloroform vapors than to other harmful vapors. The SPR kinetic data for vapors validated that a nonlinear autoregressive neural network was performed with exogenous input for the best molecular modeling by using normalized reflected light intensity values. It can be clearly seen from the correlation coefficient values that the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous input artificial neural network (NARX-ANN) model for dichloromethane converged more successfully to the experimental data compared to other gases. The correlation coefficient values of the dichloromethane modeling results were approximately 0.99 and 0.98 for P[5]-1 and P[5]-2 thin-film sensors, respectively.

A supramolecular electrochemical probe based on a tetrazole derivative pillar[5]arene/methylene blue system

For the first time, an original synthetic approach has been developed that enables the introduce ten tetrazole fragments into the pillar[5]arene structure. A supramolecular electrochemical probe was assembled for the first time from the obtained macrocycles and an electrochemically active signal converter: methylene blue (MB) dye. The ability of pillar[5]arene containing tetrazole fragments to selectively bind MB was confirmed by UV-vis and 2D 1H-1H NOESY spectroscopy. The stoichiometry of the resulting pillar[5]arene/MB complex = 1 : 2. This new supramolecular probe pillar[5]arene/MB allowed the detection of changes in the electrochemical signals of MB implemented in the supramolecular complex depending on the presence or absence of some metal ions (Zn2+ and Co2+) that do not exert their own redox activity. This will find further applications for the enhancement of the range of analytes detected by their influence on host-guest complexation and for the design of biosensors based on specific DNA-MB interactions.

A Nanoplatform Based on Pillar[5]arene Nanovalves for Combined Drug Delivery and Enhanced Antitumor Activity

Modern nanodrug delivery technologies offer new approaches in the fight against cancer. However, due to the heterogeneity of tumors and side effects of anticancer drugs, monotherapies are less effective. Herein, we report a novel pH and light dual-responsive nanodrug delivery platform. The platform was formed by sulfonate-modified gold nanoparticles loaded with the anticancer drugs doxorubicin (DOX) and glucose oxidase (GOx) and then covered by water-soluble pillar[5]arene as a nanovalve. The nanovalve formed by the host-guest interaction between pillar[5]arene and the sulfonic acid group grafted onto the gold nanoparticle increased the drug loading capacity of the nanoplatform and enabled sustained release of the drug in a simulated weakly acidic tumor environment. The released GOx can consume intracellular glucose, namely, starvation therapy, while the generated hydrogen peroxide can further kill tumor cells, complementing DOX chemotherapy. Gold nanoparticles have good photothermal conversion ability and can enhance the drugs release rate under specific wavelengths of light irradiation. The results of in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that this novel nanodrug delivery platform has good biocompatibility and better therapeutic efficacy relative to monotherapy. This study successfully developed a combined chemo/starvation therapy strategy with good tumor suppression, providing a new approach for cancer treatment.

New Cyanostyrylcopillar[5]arene Derivative: Synthesis, Photophysical Study, Chromogenic Detection of Aliphatic Amines, and Biofilm-Antibiofilm Activity

The synthesis, characterization, and application of a new cyanostyrylcopillar[5]arene 1 is reported. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other spectroscopic techniques confirm the identity of the new copillar 1. The X-ray diffraction study reveals that the copillar 1 exhibits a 1D supramolecular chain in the solid state involving π···π interactions along the crystallographic c-axis and 1D chains are further connected by interchain C-H···π interactions to establish 2D supramolecular layers within the crystallographic bc-plane. 2D supramolecular chains on further packing introduce a 3D structure with void spaces filled with hexane molecules. Through minimal deviation in the dihedral angle, the cyano-substituted ethylenic group in 1 shows a conjugation with the phenolic -OH, favoring intramolecular bond conjugation (ITBC) and colorimetrically detects the aliphatic amines over aromatic amines in CH3CN. Among the aliphatic amines, tertiary amines are differentiated from primary and secondary amines by the naked eye through color change. Both in solution and solid states, 1 displays vapor phase detection of volatile aliphatic amines. Antibacterial activity analysis shows that while 1 exhibits the antibiofilm action against Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, it promotes biofilm formation by Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Delving into the Variability of Supramolecular Affinity: Self-Ion Pairing as a Central Player in Aqueous Host-Guest Chemistry

The determination of binding constants is a key matter in evaluating the strength of host-guest interactions. However, the profound impact of self-ion pairing on this parameter is often underrated in aqueous solution, leading in some cases to a misinterpretation of the true potential of supramolecular assemblies. In the present study, we aim to shed further light on this critical factor by exploring the concentration-dependent behavior of a multicharged pillararene in water. Our observations reveal an extraordinary 1-million-fold variability in the affinity of this macrocycle toward a given anion, showcasing the highly dynamic character of electrostatic interactions. We argue that these findings bring to the forefront the inherent determinism that underlies the estimation of affinity constants, a factor profoundly shaped by both the sensitivity of the instrumental technique in use and the intricacies of the experimental design itself. In terms of applications, these results may provide the opportunity to optimize the operational concentrations of multicharged hosts in different scenarios, aiming to achieve their maximum efficiency based on the intended application. Unlocking the potential of this hidden variability may pave the way for the creation of novel molecular materials with advanced functionalities.

Regenerable and Highly Stable Two-Dimensional Imine-Based Covalent Organic Framework for Simultaneous Rapid Detection and Adsorption of Cu2+ Ions

The development of efficient fluorescent probes and adsorbents for detecting and removing Cu2+, which pose potential environmental and health risks, is a highly active area of research. However, achieving simultaneously improved fluorescence detection efficiency and enhanced adsorption capacity in a single porous probe remains a significant challenge. In this study, we successfully synthesized a two-dimensional imine-based TAP-COF using 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol and tri(4-aminophenyl)amine as raw materials. TAP-COF exhibited excellent properties, including a large specific surface area of 685.65 m2·g-1, exceptional thermal stability (>440 °C), chemical stability, temporal stability, and recyclability. Fluorescence testing revealed that TAP-COF exhibited remarkable specificity and high sensitivity for detecting Cu2+. The fluorescence mechanism, in which the excited state intramolecular proton transfer was impeded by the interaction of Cu2+ with C═O and C-N bonds on TAP-COF upon the addition of Cu2+, was further elucidated through experimental and theoretical methods. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of TAP-COF toward Cu2+ was investigated, confirming the excellence of TAP-COF as a fluorescent probe and adsorbent for the specific detection and removal of Cu2+. This work holds significant implications for improving environmental and human health concerns associated with Cu2+ contamination.

Highly selective Cu2+ detection with a naphthalimide-functionalised pillar[5]arene fluorescent chemosensor

Ligand 1, a rim-differentiated pillar[5]arene macrocycle modified with five naphthalimide groups through click chemistry, serves as an effective ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor for Cu2+. In contrast to the monomeric naphthalimide control compound 2, which shows only monomer emission, ligand 1 demonstrates dual emission characteristics encompassing both the monomer and excimer of the naphthalimide moieties. The binding properties of ligand 1 toward 15 different metal ions were systematically investigated in CH2Cl2/CH3CN (v/v, 1 : 1) by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Remarkably, ligand 1 exhibits exceptional selectivity for Cu2+ ions. Upon complexation with Cu2+, the excimer emission of ligand 1 diminishes, concomitant with an enhancement of its monomer emission. The binding ratio for 1·Cu2+ was determined to be 1 : 1, with an association constant of (3.39 ± 0.40) × 105 M-1 calculated using a nonlinear least-squares curve-fitting method. Furthermore, the limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 185 ± 7 nM. Our results from 1H NMR titration, high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis and density functional theory calculations of 1·Cu2+ suggest synergistic coordination between Cu2+ and the triazole groups on ligand 1.

Switchable Metal-Ion Selectivity in Sulfur-Functionalised Pillar[5]arenes and Their Host-Guest Complexes

Nucleophilic substitution of pertosylated pillar[5]arene (P-OTs) with commercially available sulfur containing nucleophiles (KSCN, KSAc, and thiophenol), yields a series of sulfur-functionalised pillar[5]arenes. DLS results and SEM images imply that these pillararene macrocycles self-assemble in acetonitrile solution, while X-ray crystallographic evidence suggests solvent-dependent assembly in the solid state. The nature of the sulfur substituents decorating the rim of the pillararene controls binding affinities towards organic guest encapsulations within the cavity and dictates metal-ion binding properties through the formation of favorable S-M2+ coordination bonds outside the cavity, as determined by 1 H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopic experiments. Addition of a dinitrile guest containing a bis-triazole benzene spacer (btn) induced formation of pseudorotaxane host-guest complexes. Fluorescence emission signals from these discrete macrocycles were significantly attenuated in the presence of either Hg2+ or Cu2+ in solution. Analogous titrations utilizing the corresponding pseudorotaxanes alter the binding selectivity and improve fluorescence sensing sensitivity. In addition, preliminary liquid-liquid extraction studies indicate that the macrocycles facilitate the transfer of Cu2+ from the aqueous to the organic phase in comparison to extraction without pillar[5]arene ligands.

A rationally designed fluorescent probe for sulfur dioxide and its derivatives: applications in food analysis and bioimaging

Exogenous sulfur dioxide (SO2) and its derivatives (SO32-/HSO3-) have been extensively utilized in food preservation and endogenous SO2 is recognized as a significant gaseous signaling molecule that can mediate various physiological processes. Overproduction and/or extensive intake of these species can trigger allergic reactions and even tissue damage. Therefore, it is highly desirable to monitor SO2 and its derivatives effectively and quantitatively both in vitro and in vivo. Herein, a new mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe (PIB) had been constructed, which could ratiometrically recognize SO2 and its derivatives with excellent sensitivity (DL = 15.9 nM) and a fast response time (200 s). The obtained high selectivity and good adaptability of this SO2-specific probe in a wide pH range (6.5-10.0) allowed for quantitatively tracking of SO2 and its derivatives in real food samples (granulated sugar, crystal sugar, and white wine). In addition, PIB could locate at mitochondrion and was capable of imaging exogenous/endogenous SO2 in the cells and zebrafish. In particular, our findings represented one of the rare examples that have demonstrated endogenous SO2 is closely related with the apoptosis of cells. Importantly, probe PIB was successfully employed for in situ metabolic localization in mouse organs, implying the potential applications of our probe in further exploration on SO2-releated pathological and physiological processes.

Crystal structure and supra-molecular features of a bis-urea-functionalized pillar[5]arene

The crystal structure of a bis-urea derivative based on A1/A2-functionalized pillar[5]arene (DUP) that encapsulates dimethyl formamide (DMF) inside the macrocyclic cavity is reported. The crystal structure of DUP·DMF, C63H70N4O12·C3H7NO, reveals that out of two urea functionalized spacers, one arm is oriented above the macrocyclic cavity with strong hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between the urea H atoms and DMF guest, whereas, the other arm is positioned away from the macrocycle, leading to inter-molecular hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between the urea H atoms of two adjacent pillar[5]arene macrocycles, resulting in the formation of a supra-molecular dimer.

Advanced stimuli-responsive membranes for smart separation

Membranes have been extensively studied and applied in various fields owing to their high energy efficiency and small environmental impact. Further conferring membranes with stimuli responsiveness can allow them to dynamically tune their pore structure and/or surface properties for efficient separation performance. This review summarizes and discusses important developments and achievements in stimuli-responsive membranes. The most commonly utilized stimuli, including light, pH, temperature, ions, and electric and magnetic fields, are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to stimuli-responsive control of membrane pore structure (pore size and porosity/connectivity) and surface properties (wettability, surface topology, and surface charge), from the perspective of determining the appropriate membrane properties and microstructures. This review also focuses on strategies to prepare stimuli-responsive membranes, including blending, casting, polymerization, self-assembly, and electrospinning. Smart applications for separations are also reviewed as well as a discussion of remaining challenges and future prospects in this exciting field. This review offers critical insights for the membrane and broader materials science communities regarding the on-demand and dynamic control of membrane structures and properties. We hope that this review will inspire the design of novel stimuli-responsive membranes to promote sustainable development and make progress toward commercialization.

Handcuff-like metallo-pseudorotaxanes consisting of tiara[5]arene wheels and dimeric silver trifluoroacetate axles

The complexation between tiara[5]arene (T[5]) and silver trifluoroacetate affords a binuclear metallo-pseudorotaxane on account of multiple endo-cavity Ag^I η²-arene interactions. Furthermore, two such enantiomeric [(CF₃CO₂Ag)₂⊂T[5]] complexes are bridged by an extra (CF₃CO₂Ag)₂ dimer through exo-wall Ag^I η²-arene coordination, resulting in a unique handcuff metallo-bis-pseudorotaxane structure in the solid state.

Toward Pathogenic Biofilm Suppressors: Synthesis of Amino Derivatives of Pillar[5]arene and Supramolecular Assembly with DNA

New amino derivatives of pillar[5]arene were obtained in three stages with good yields. It was shown that pillar[5]arene containing thiaether and tertiary amino groups formed supramolecular complexes with low molecular weight model DNA. Pillar[5]arene formed complexes with a DNA nucleotide pair at a ratio of 1:2 (macrocycle/DNA base pairs), as demonstrated by UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. The association constants of pillar[5]arene with DNA were lgKass1:1 = 2.38 and lgKass1:2 = 5.07, accordingly. By using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, it was established that the interaction of pillar[5]arene containing thiaether and tertiary amino groups (concentration of 10-5 M) with a model nucleic acid led to the formation of stable nanosized macrocycle/DNA associates with an average particle size of 220 nm. It was shown that the obtained compounds did not exhibit a pronounced toxicity toward human adenocarcinoma cells (A549) and bovine lung epithelial cells (LECs). The hypothesis about a possible usage of the synthesized macrocycle for the aggregation of extracellular bacterial DNA in a biofilm matrix was confirmed by the example of St. Aureus. It was found that pillar[5]arene at a concentration of 10^-5 M was able to reduce the thickness of the St. Aureus biofilm by 15%.

Green, Efficient Detection and Removal of Hg2+ by Water-Soluble Fluorescent Pillar[5]arene Supramolecular Self-Assembly

Developing a water-soluble supramolecular system for the detection and removal of Hg²⁺ is extremely needed but remains challenging. Herein, we reported the facile construction of a fluorescent supramolecular system (H⊃G) in 100% water through the self-assembly of carboxylatopillar[5]arene sodium salts (H) and diketopyrrolopyrrole-bridged bis(quaternary ammonium) guest (G) by host–guest interaction. With the addition of Hg²⁺, the fluorescence of H⊃G could be efficiently quenched. Since Hg²⁺ showed synergistic interactions (coordination and Hg²⁺- cavity interactions with G and H, respectively), crosslinked networks of H⊃G@Hg²⁺ were formed. A sensitive response to Hg²⁺ with excellent selectivity and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 7.17 × 10⁻⁷ M was obtained. Significantly, the quenching fluorescence of H⊃G@Hg²⁺ can be recovered after a simple treatment with Na₂S. The reusability of H⊃G for the detection of Hg²⁺ ions was retained for four cycles, indicating the H⊃G could be efficiently used in a reversible manner. In addition, the H⊃G could efficiently detect Hg²⁺ concentration in real samples (tap water and lake water). The developed supramolecular system in 100% water provides great potential in the treatment of Hg²⁺ detection and removal for environmental sustainability.

Metallosupramolecules of Pillar[5]arene with Two Flexible Thiopyridyl Arms: A Heterochiral Cyclic Dimer and Organic Guest-Assisted Homochiral Poly-Pseudo-Rotaxanes

The formation of a cyclic dimer complex (1) and a poly-pseudo-rotaxane (2) of a racemic A1/A2-thiopyridyl pillar[5]arene (rac-L) with different chirality is reported. A one-pot reaction of rac-L with HgCl₂ afforded a heterochiral cyclic dimer complex, [Hg₂(pR-L)(pS-L)Cl₄]·8CH₂Cl₂ (1), in which two Hg²⁺ atoms and one (pR-L)/(pS-L) enantiomeric pair form a [2:2] metallacycle via a metal coordination-based cyclization. Interestingly, the same reaction in the presence of the linear dinitrile guest, CN(CH₂)₈CN (G), yielded a one-dimensional poly-pseudo-rotaxane, {[Hg(G@pR-L)Cl₂][Hg(G@pS-L)Cl₂]}_n (2), probably due to the rigidified ligand structure resulting from the dinitrile guest (G) threading. In 2, pR-L and pS-L generate two separated homochiral poly-pseudo-rotaxanes in a crystal. Both products are new members of the pillararene-derivative family. This study improves our understanding of self-assembly in nature and leads to this approach being an engineering tool for the construction of mechanically interlocked supramolecules.

Design and NMR characterization of reversible head-to-tail boronate-linked macrocyclic nucleic acids

Inspired by the ability of boronic acids to bind with compounds containing diol moieties, we envisioned the formation in solution of boronate ester-based macrocycles by the head-to-tail assembly of a nucleosidic precursor that contains both a boronic acid and the natural 2',3'-diol of ribose. DOSY NMR spectroscopy experiments in water and anhydrous DMF revealed the dynamic assembly of this precursor into dimeric and trimeric macrocycles in a concentration-dependent fashion as well as the reversibility of the self-assembly process. NMR experimental values and quantum mechanics calculations provided further insight into the sugar pucker conformation profile of these macrocycles.

Synthesis of a large-cavity carbazole macrocycle for size-dependent recognition

A large-cavity carbazole macrocycle (1) is reported through condensation of a long and rigid monomer and paraformaldehyde. 1 exhibits highly selective binding of large-sized tetra(n-propyl) ammonium cation 3⁺. The complexation of 3⁺ by 1 is counter anion-dependent, where Cl^- gives the highest association constant of 3010 ± 230 M^-1.

Nanomaterials for IoT Sensing Platforms and Point-of-Care Applications in South Korea

Herein, state-of-the-art research advances in South Korea regarding the development of chemical sensing materials and fully integrated Internet of Things (IoT) sensing platforms were comprehensively reviewed for verifying the applicability of such sensing systems in point-of-care testing (POCT). Various organic/inorganic nanomaterials were synthesized and characterized to understand their fundamental chemical sensing mechanisms upon exposure to target analytes. Moreover, the applicability of nanomaterials integrated with IoT-based signal transducers for the real-time and on-site analysis of chemical species was verified. In this review, we focused on the development of noble nanostructures and signal transduction techniques for use in IoT sensing platforms, and based on their applications, such systems were classified into gas sensors, ion sensors, and biosensors. A future perspective for the development of chemical sensors was discussed for application to next-generation POCT systems that facilitate rapid and multiplexed screening of various analytes.

Specific recognition, intracellular assay and detoxification of fluorescent curcumin derivative for copper ions

Recognition and excretion of metal ions play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and poisoning. Although copper (Cu) is a cofactor of many key enzymes in the human body, its accumulation caused by genetic ATP7B mutation or environmental pollution can lead to hepatotoxicity, renal failure, Wilson's disease, inflammation, and even Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, in this work, a difluoroboron curcumin derivative (DF-Cur) was used for the specific recognition of copper ions (Cu²⁺). DF-Cur could be further used to as a rapid diagnostic agent for the copper detection in cells and zebrafish at the nanomolar level. DF-Cur could significantly reduce the toxic damage caused by high Cu²⁺ dose. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis indicated that DF-Cur could promote the excretion of copper ions in the urine and bile and reduce the accumulation of copper ions in vivo. In addition, DF-Cur could selectively detect cholesterol in the blood and adipose tissue in vivo by fluorescent staining. These results demonstrated that this molecule might represent a new and promising diagnostic and therapeutic agent to combat diseases related to copper ions accumulation.

Fungal quinones: diversity, producers, and applications of quinones from Aspergillus, Penicillium, Talaromyces, Fusarium, and Arthrinium

Quinones represent an important group of highly structurally diverse, mainly polyketide-derived secondary metabolites widely distributed among filamentous fungi. Many quinones have been reported to have important biological functions such as inhibition of bacteria or repression of the immune response in insects. Other quinones, such as ubiquinones are known to be essential molecules in cellular respiration, and many quinones are known to protect their producing organisms from exposure to sunlight. Most recently, quinones have also attracted a lot of industrial interest since their electron-donating and -accepting properties make them good candidates as electrolytes in redox flow batteries, like their often highly conjugated double bond systems make them attractive as pigments. On an industrial level, quinones are mainly synthesized from raw components in coal tar. However, the possibility of producing quinones by fungal cultivation has great prospects since fungi can often be grown in industrially scaled bioreactors, producing valuable metabolites on cheap substrates. In order to give a better overview of the secondary metabolite quinones produced by and shared between various fungi, mainly belonging to the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Talaromyces, Fusarium, and Arthrinium, this review categorizes quinones into families such as emodins, fumigatins, sorbicillinoids, yanuthones, and xanthomegnins, depending on structural similarities and information about the biosynthetic pathway from which they are derived, whenever applicable. The production of these quinone families is compared between the different genera, based on recently revised taxonomy. Decontamination of radioactive cesium-contaminated soil/concrete with washing and washing supernatant- critical review

We reviewed washing of radioactive Cs-contaminated concrete and soil based on the fate of Cs in concrete and soil, including sorption materials for treatment of supernatant solution. In non-aged cement materials (the calcium silicate hydration (C-S-H) phase), it was possible to decontaminate Cs using ion exchange with monovalent cations, such as NH₄⁺. The clay components in the soil and aggregates were important factors in optimization of the efficiency and mechanism for Cs decontamination with washing solution. The parameters (reagent component, pH, and temperature) of the washing solution should be determined considering soil mineral type (here, weathered biotite (WB) with vermiculite), since monovalent cations such as NH₄⁺ and K⁺ can inhibit Cs decontamination due to collapse of the hydrated and expanded interlayer regions with cation exchange. In this case, hydrothermal treatment or H₂O₂ dosing was necessary to expand the collapsed interlayer region for Cs removal by washing with cation exchange or organic acids. Acid and a chelating agent significantly enhanced Cs-release with dissolution of the adsorbent layer containing iron and aluminum oxides. The important characteristics of important and emerging sorption materials for treatment of the radioactive Cs-contaminated supernatant after washing treatment are discussed. Sorbents for treatment of washing supernatant are divided in to two main categories. Clay minerals, metal hexacyanoferrates, and ammonium molybdophosphates are discussed in the inorganic class of materials. Multifunctional Pillar[n]arene-Based Smart Nanomaterials

The construction of smart nanomaterials from host macrocycles that are responsive to specific stimuli has gained significant attention in recent years. The application of pillar[n]arenes has been of particular interest given their ease of functionalization and tunability of the intrinsic cavity electronic properties that allows them to encapsulate a great variety of guests and complex with metal ions with high selectivity via noncovalent interactions, endowing them with captivating properties and functions. Herein, we present the most recent advances in the design and functionalization of pillar[n]arene-based smart nanomaterials, and their applications for sensing, catalysis, drug delivery, and artificial transmembrane channels.

A chromo-fluorogenic HMT sensor for Ag+ and the resultant HMT-Ag complex turn-off probe for F- in DMSO: experimental and theoretical studies

The photophysical properties of Hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) were investigated through physical methods and spectroscopically in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at ambient temperature. Evidently, HMT turned out as a sensor, selective and sensitive to silver ion (Ag⁺) only, among other cations, through colorimetric and fluorometric activities (observable by naked eye) and spectrally, both by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The resulting complex pedant (HMT-Ag) is highly responsive to the presence of fluoride ion (F⁻) in aqueous soluble DMSO, evidenced by changes in absorption spectra as well as fluorescence quenching, upon addition of the respective ions. Consequently, spectral changes induced by the addition of these ions, were consistently concomitant with colour changes, from colourless to light brown (HMT-Ag) to dark brown (HMT-Ag-F) in daylight condition, while bright light blue colour (HMT) to dark blue brownish (HMT-Ag) under UV-light conditions. The experimental results were complimented by theoretical studies, which are well within agreement of one another.

Pillar[5]-bis-trithiacrown: Influence of Host-Guest Interactions on the Formation of Coordination Networks

A pillar[5]-bis-trithiacrown (L) capable of metal binding and organic guest threading simultaneously has been employed, and the influence of dinitrile guests [CN(CH₂)_nCN (n = 2-6: abbreviated C2-C6)] on the coordination behaviors has been investigated. When the ditopic ligand L was reacted with HgCl₂ in the presence of the C2-C6 guests, the shorter guests C2 and C3 afforded a two-dimensional coordination polymer [Hg₇Cl₁₄(C2@L)₂]_n (1) and a one-dimensional coordination polymer [(Hg₃Cl₆)₂(C3@L)₂]_n (2), respectively. In 1 and 2, each dinitrile guest threads into the pillararene cavity to form a C2@L or C3@L unit via the host-guest interaction. Further linking of these units by exocyclic Hg-S bonds and anion coordination lead to the formation of coordination products with different dimensionalities. While the use of the longer guests C4-C6 under the same reactions yielded a discrete dimercury(II) complex 3, [Hg₂Cl₄(CH₃CN@L)] which contains one acetonitrile solvent molecule because the longer dinitriles do not serve as effective guests. In the NMR and UV-vis studies, the association constants (log K_1:1) for the host-guest interactions of L with the dinitrile guests are C2 (4.75) > C3 (4.17) ≫ C4 (2.85) > C5 (2.45) > C6 (too small), indicating that the shorter guests C2 or C3 interact more strongly than longer ones due to the confined interior space of L. Taken collectively, the C2 and C3 guests with proper size-matching promote the formation of coordination polymers and vice versa, suggesting that the guest size could be a controlling factor.

Metallo-Supramolecular Coordination Polymers Based on Amidopyridine Derivatives of Pillar[5]arene and Cu(II) and Pd(II) Cations: Synthesis and Recognition of Nitroaromatic Compounds

Decasubstituted pillar[5]arenes containing amidopyridine fragments have been synthesized for the first time. As was shown by UV-vis spectroscopy, the pillar[5]arenes with p-amidopyridine fragments form supramolecular associates with Cu(II) and Pd(II) cations in methanol in a 2:1 ratio. Using a sol-gel approach these associates are transformed into metallo-supramolecular coordination polymers (supramolecular gels) which were characterized as amorphous powders by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The powders are able to selectively adsorb up to 46% of nitrophenols from water and were incorporated into an electrochemical sensor to selectively recognize them in aqueous acidic solution.

Ternary Cocrystals with Large Soft Cavities: A 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (DITFB)⋅4-Biphenylpyridine N-oxide (BPNO) Host Assembled by Inclusion of Planar Aromatic Guests

A large soft-cavity host composed of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (DITFB) and 4-biphenylpyridine N-oxide (BPNO) is assembled under the mediation of a planar aromatic guest molecule (pyrene or perylene) through C-I⋅⋅⋅^- O-N⁺ halogen bonds and π-hole⋅⋅⋅π bonds. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that guest molecules can be completely encapsulated in the four-layer host cavity to assemble ternary host-guest cocrystals; namely, Pyr@DITFB ⋅ BPNO and Per@DITFB ⋅ BPNO. The luminescence of these ternary cocrystals originates from their discrete guest molecules, which exhibit pure-blue and yellow emissions, respectively, that are localized at 425 nm and in the range of 485 to 578 nm, respectively. In addition, the contribution of different fragments to the stabilization of the crystal structure is estimated by computational chemistry. These cocrystals have significant potential for use in optical applications or materials, such as photonics or organic light-emitting diodes, respectively, that require to avoid the aggregation between luminophores.

Fluorescent Probes for Selective Recognition of Hypobromous Acid: Achievements and Future Perspectives

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in numerous pathological processes and their homeostasis facilitates the dynamic balance of intracellular redox states. Among ROS, hypobromous acid (HOBr) has a high similarity to hypochlorous acid (HOCl) in both chemical and physical properties, whereas it has received relatively little attention. Meanwhile, selective recognition of endogenous HOBr suffers great challenges due to the fact that the concentration of this molecule is much lower than that of HOCl. Fluorescence-based detection systems have emerged as very important tools to monitor biomolecules in living cells and organisms owing to distinct advantages, particularly the temporal and spatial sampling for in vivo imaging applications. To date, the development of HOBr-specific fluorescent probes is still proceeding quite slowly, and the research related to this area has not been systematically summarized. In this review, we are the first to review the progress made so far in fluorescent probes for selective recognition and detection of HOBr. The molecular structures, sensing mechanisms, and their successful applications of these probes as bioimaging agents are discussed here in detail. Importantly, we hope this review will call for more attention to this rising field, and that this could stimulate new future achievements.

Incorporation of carboxylated pillar[5]arene and strontium(ii) into supramolecular coordination complexes of different nuclearities

The nuclearity of the coordination complexes of carboxylated pillar[5]arene and strontium(ii) can be varied with the aid of phenanthroline as a coligand.

Stimuli-Responsive Internally Ion-Paired Supramolecular Polymer Based on a Bis-pillar[5]arene Dicarboxylic Acid Monomer

A novel bis-pillar[5]arene dicarboxylic acid self-assembles in the presence of 1,12-diaminododecane to yield overall neutral, internally ion-paired supramolecular polymers. Their aggregation, binding mode, and morphology can be tuned by external stimuli such as solvent polarity, concentration, and base treatment.

Macrocyclic Arenes Functionalized with BODIPY: Rising Stars among Chemosensors and Smart Materials

Macrocycles play a crucial role in supramolecular chemistry and the family of macrocyclic arenes represents one of the most important types of hosts. Among them, calixarenes, resorcinarenes and pillararenes are the most commonly encountered macrocyclic arenes, and they have received considerable attention. Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes are fascinating compounds with multiple functionalization sites and outstanding luminescence properties including high fluorescence quantum yields, large molar absorption coefficients and remarkable photo- and chemical stability. The combination of macrocyclic arenes and BODIPY dyes has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to construct chemosensors for various guests and smart materials with tailored properties. Herein, we firstly summarize the recent advances made so far in macrocyclic arenes substituted with BODIPY. This review only focuses on the three macrocyclic arenes of calixarenes, resorcinarenes and pillararenes, as there are no other macrocyclic arenes substituted BODIPY units at the present time. Hopefully, this review will not only afford a guide and useful information for those who are interested in developing novel chemosensors and smart materials, but also inspire new opportunities in this field.
