Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs): Classification, Synthesis, Modification, and Biomedical Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new variety of solid crystalline porous functional materials. As an extension of inorganic porous materials, it has made important progress in preparation and application. MOFs are widely used in various fields such as gas adsorption storage, drug delivery, sensing, and biological imaging due to their high specific surface area, porosity, adjustable pore size, abundant active sites, and functional modification by introducing groups. In this paper, the types of MOFs are classified, and the synthesis methods and functional modification mechanisms of MOFs materials are summarized. Finally, the application prospects and challenges of metal-organic framework materials in the biomedical field are discussed, hoping to promote their application in multidisciplinary fields.

Unlocking the potential: strategic synthesis of a previously predicted pyrazolate-based stable MOF with unique clusters and high catalytic activity

The metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed from [Co4Pz8] clusters (Pz = pyrazolate) and 1,3,5-tris(pyrazolate-4-yl) benzene (BTP3-) ligands was structurally predicted many years ago, and expected to be a promising candidate for various applications owing to its unique clusters and highly open 3D framework structure. However, this MOF has not been experimentally prepared yet, despite extensive efforts were made. In this work, we present the successful construction of this MOF, hereinafter referred to as BUT-124(Co), by adopting a two-step synthesis strategy, involving the initial construction of a template framework (BUT-124(Cd)) followed by a post-synthetic metal metathesis process. The effects of various cobalt sources and solvents were systematically investigated, and an innovative stepwise metathesis strategy was employed to optimize the exchange rates and the porosity of the material. BUT-124(Co) demonstrates high catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), achieving a competitive performance with an overpotential of 393 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, and also affords remarkable long-term stability during potentiostatic electrolysis in 1 M KOH solution, surpassing the durability of many benchmark catalysts. This work not only introduces a novel MOF material with promising properties but also exemplifies a strategic synthesis approach for pyrazolate-based MOFs, paving the way for advancements in diverse application fields.

Transmetalation in Surface-Confined Single-Layer Organometallic Networks with Alkynyl-Metal-Alkynyl Linkages

Transmetalation represents an appealing strategy toward fabricating and tuning functional metal-organic polymers and frameworks for diverse applications. In particular, building two-dimensional metal-organic and organometallic networks affords versatile nanoarchitectures of potential interest for nanodevices and quantum technology. The controlled replacement of embedded metal centers holds promise for exploring versatile material varieties by serial modification and different functionalization. Herein, we introduce a protocol for the modification of a single-layer carbon-metal-based organometallic network via transmetalation. By integrating external Cu atoms into the alkynyl-Ag organometallic network constructed with 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene precursors, we successfully realized in situ its highly regular alkynyl-Cu counterpart on the Ag(111) surface. While maintaining a similar lattice periodicity and pore morphology to the original alkynyl-Ag sheet, the Cu-based network exhibits increased thermal stability, guaranteeing improved robustness for practical implementation.

Central Metal-Triggered Structural Transformation of a 2D Layered MOF: Mechanistic Studies and Applications

The structural transformation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted increasing interests, which has not only produced various new structures but also served as a fantastic platform for MOF-based kinetic analysis. Multiple reaction conditions have been documented to cause structural transformation; nevertheless, central metal-induced topological alteration of MOFs is rare. Herein, we reported a structural transformation of a 2D layered Cd-MOF driven by Cd(II) ions. After being submerged in the aqueous solution of cadmium nitrate, the twofold interpenetrated 2D network of [Cd(hsb-2)(bdc)·5H2O]n [HSB-W10; bdc: 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate; hsb-2:1,2-bis(4'-pyridylmethylamino)-ethane] was converted into a novel noninterpenetrated 2D network [Cd1.5(hsb-2)(bdc)1.5(H2O)2·H2O]n (HSB-W16). This partial dissolution-recrystallization process was investigated by integrating controlled experiments, 1H NMR spectra, and photographic tracking analysis. Furthermore, a novel strategy combining in situ multicomponent dye encapsulation and central metal-triggered structural transformation was developed for the fabrication of MOF materials with white-light emission. By adopting this strategy, different dye guest molecules were concurrently introduced into the HSB-W16 host matrix, leading to a range of white-light-emitting MOF composites. This work will enable detailed studies of solid-state transformations and demonstrate a promising application prospect for structural transformation.

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Stepwise construction of multi-component metal-organic frameworks

Multi-component metal-organic frameworks (MC-MOFs) are crystalline porous materials containing multiple organic ligands or mixed metals, which manifest new properties beyond the linear combination of the single component. However, the traditional one-pot synthesis method for MOFs is not always applicable for synthesizing MC-MOFs due to the competitive coordination of multiple ligands and metals. Therefore, the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs has been explored, which enables more precise control of the heterogeneity within the ordered MC-MOFs. This review provides a summary of the synthesis strategies, namely, ligand exchange, coordinative modification, covalent modification, ligand metalation, cluster metalation, and use of mixed-metal precursors, for the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of MC-MOFs with ordered arrangements of multiple functionalities, focusing on gas adsorption and separation, water remediation, heterogeneous catalysis, luminescence, and chemical sensing.

Suppression of Vanadium Oxide Dissolution via Cation Metathesis within a Coordination Supramolecular Network for Durable Aqueous Zn-V2 O5 Batteries

Aqueous zinc metal batteries (ZMBs) are a promising sustainable technology for large-scale energy storage applications. However, the water is often associated with problematic parasitic reactions on both anode and cathode, leading to the low durability and reliability of ZMBs. Here, a multifunctional separator for the Zn-V2 O5 batteries by growing the coordination supramolecular network (CSN:Zn-MBA, MBA = 2-mercaptobenzoic acid) on the conventional non-woven fabrics (NWF) is developed. CSN tends to form a stronger coordination bond as a softer cation, enabling a thermodynamically preferred Zn2+ to VO2 + substitution in the network, leading to the formation of VO2 -MBA interface, that strongly obstructs the VO2 (OH)2 - penetration but simultaneously allows Zn2+ transfer. Moreover, Zn-MBA molecules can adsorb the OTF- and distribute the interfacial Zn2+ homogeneous, which facilitate a dendrite-free Zn deposition. The Zn-V2 O5 cells with Zn-MBA@NWF separator realize high capacity of 567 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 , and excellent cyclability over 2000 cycles with capacity retention of 82.2% at 5 A g-1 . This work combines the original advantages of the template and new function of metals via cation metathesis within a CSN, provides a new strategy for inhibiting vanadium oxide dissolution.

Removal of diclofenac by adsorption process studied in free-base porphyrin Zr-metal organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs)

As the world population continues to grow, there is also a rising concern regarding water pollution since this condition could negatively impact the supply of clean water. One of the most recent concerns is related to the pollution that comes from various pharmaceuticals, in particular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) since they have been industrially produced at large scale and can be easily purchased as an over-the-counter medicine. Diclofenac is one of the most popular NSAIDs because of its high-effectiveness, which leads to its excessive consumption. Consequently, its presence in water bodies is also continuously increasing. An adsorption process could then be employed as a highly effective method to address this issue. In comparison to other conventional adsorbents such as activated carbon, the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an alternative adsorbent is very attractive since it can offer various advantages such as tailorability and high adsorption capacity. In this study, the performance of three water-stable, free-base porphyrin MOFs assembled using zirconia-based nodes, namely MOF-525, MOF-545, and NU-902, for diclofenac adsorption was thoroughly investigated. Interestingly, although all three free-base porphyrin MOFs are assembled using the same building block and have a similar specific surface area (based on the experimental argon physisorption and calculation based on non-localized density functional theory), their diclofenac adsorption capacity is substantially different from one another. It is found that the highest diclofenac adsorption capacity is shown by MOF-525, which has maximum capacity around 792 mg g^-1. This is then followed by MOF-545 and NU-902 that have adsorption capacities around 591 and 486 mg g^-1, respectively. Some possible adsorption mechanisms are then thoroughly discussed that might contribute to this phenomenon. Lastly, their performance is also compared with other MOFs that are also studied for this purpose to show their performance superiority not only in terms of adsorption capacity but also their affinity towards the diclofenac molecule, which might be useful as an adsorption performance indicator in the real condition where the contaminant concentration is considerably low.

Facile synthesis of core-shell Co-MOF with hierarchical porosity for enhanced electrochemical detection of furaltadone in aquaculture water

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibited huge application potential in electrochemical analysis field, how to facilely and effectively boost the electrochemical sensing activity of MOFs materials still face enormous challenges. In this work, core-shell Co-MOF (Co-TCA@ZIF-67) polyhedrons with hierarchical porosity was easily synthesized via simple chemical etching reaction by selecting thiocyanuric acid as the etching reagent. Benefiting from the introduction of mesopores and thiocyanuric acid/Co²⁺ complex on the surface of ZIF-67 frameworks, the property and functions of the pristine ZIF-67 was seriously tailored. Compared with the pristine ZIF-67, the as-resulted Co-TCA@ZIF-67 nanoparticles displayed greatly enhanced physical adsorption capacity and electrochemical reduction activity toward the antibiotic drug furaltadone. As a result, a novel furaltadone electrochemical sensor with high sensitivity was fabricated. The linear detection range was from 50 nM to 5 μM with sensitivity of 110.40 μA^-1 μM^-1 cm^-2 and detection limit of 12 nM. This work demonstrated chemical etching strategy is truly a facile and effective way to modify the electrochemical sensing performance of MOFs-based materials, and we believed the chemically etched MOFs materials will play a stronger role in terms of food safety and environmental conservation.

Chiral MOFs encapsulated by polymers with poly-metallic coordination as chiral biosensors

Chiral materials have drawn the widespread attention for their its chiral recognition ability. The design and synthesis of chiral material are of importance owing to the unpredictability in controlling chirality during the synthesis process. To circumvent problems, a chiral MOF (D-His-ZIF-8) was synthesized by ligand exchange of 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) on ZIF-8 by D-histidine (D-His), which can be treated as chiral host to distinguish amino acid enantiomers. The obtained D-His-ZIF-8 can provide chiral nanochannels for amino acid guests. Meanwhile, polynary transition-metal ion (Co²⁺ and Fe³⁺) coordinating with polydopamine (PDA) wrapped on the surface of D-His-ZIF-8 can increase the active sites. The electrochemical chiral recognition behavior showed that D-His-ZIF-8@CoFe-PDA exhibited good recognition of the tryptophan enantiomer (L/D-Trp) (working potential of -0.2 V vs. Hg/HgCl₂). The LOD and LOQ of L-Trp were 0.066 mM and 0.22 mM, respectively, while the LOD and LOQ of D-Trp were 0.15 mM and 0.50 mM, respectively. Finally, the usefulness of D-His-ZIF-8@CoFe-PDA/GCE was evaluated with a recovery of 94.4-103%. The analysis of real  samples shows that D-His-ZIF-8@CoFe-PDA/GCE is a feasible sensing platform for the detection of L-Trp and D-Trp.

Cluster-Based Crystalline Materials for Iodine Capture

The treatment of radioactive iodine in nuclear waste has always been a critical issue of social concern. The rational design of targeted and efficient capture materials is of great significance to the sustainable development of the ecological environment. In recent decades, crystalline materials have served as a molecular platform to study the binding process and capture mechanism of iodine molecules, enabling people to understand the interaction between radioactive iodine guests and pores intuitively. Cluster-based crystalline materials, including molecular clusters and cluster-based metal-organic frameworks, are emerging candidates for iodine capture due to their aggregative binding sites, precise structural information, tunable pores/packing patterns, and abundant modifications. Herein, recent progress of different types of cluster materials and cluster-dominated metal-organic porous materials for iodine capture is reviewed. Research prospects, design strategies to improve the affinity for iodine and possible capture mechanisms are discussed.

Synthesis and shaping of metal-organic frameworks: a review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess excellent advantages, such as high porosity, large specific surface area, and an adjustable structure, showing good potential for applications in gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, conductivity, sensing, magnetism, etc. However, they still suffer from significant limitations in terms of the scale-up synthesis and shaping, hindering the realization of large-scale commercial applications. Despite some attempts having been devoted to addressing this, challenges remain. In this paper, we outline the advantages and drawbacks of existing synthetic routes such as electrochemistry, microwave, ultrasonic radiation, green solvent reflux, room temperature stirring, steam-assisted transformation, mechanochemistry, and fluid chemistry in terms of scale-up production. Then, the shaping methods of MOFs such as extrusion, mechanical compaction, rolling granulation, spray drying, gel technology, embedded granulation, phase inversion, 3D printing and other shaping methods for the preparation of membranes, coatings and nanoparticles are discussed. Finally, perspectives on the large-scale synthesis and shaping of MOFs are also proposed. This work helps provide in-depth insight into the scale-up production and shaping process of MOFs and boost commercial applications of MOFs.

Directing the Morphology, Packing, and Properties of Chiral Metal–Organic Frameworks by Cation Exchange**

We show that metal–organic frameworks, based on tetrahedral pyridyl ligands, can be used as a morphological and structural template to form a series of isostructural crystals having different metal ions and properties. An iterative crystal‐to‐crystal conversion has been demonstrated by consecutive cation exchanges. The primary manganese‐based crystals are characterized by an uncommon space group (P622). The packing includes chiral channels that can mediate the cation exchange, as indicated by energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy on microtome‐sectioned crystals. The observed cation exchange is in excellent agreement with the Irving–Williams series (Mn<Fe<Co<Ni< Cu>Zn) associated with the relative stability of the resulting coordination nodes. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the metal cation controls the optical and magnetic properties. The crystals maintain their morphology, allowing a quantitative comparison of their properties at both the ensemble and single‐crystal level.

A microporous chromium-organic framework fabricated via solvent-assisted metal metathesis for C2H2/CO2 separation

Removal of CO₂ or C₂H₄ from C₂H₂ is still a challenging task due to their similar physical-chemical properties. Here, a bifunctional ligand decorated with amino and sulfoxide groups, 5',5''''-sulfonylbis (2'-amino-[1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-4,4''-dicarboxylic acid) (H₄L), was employed to construct a new microporous iron-organic framework (Fe-MOF) with the formula [(Fe₃O)(L)_1.5(H₂O)₃]_n. This MOF can serve as a parent structure to obtain the isostructural Cr-MOF by solvent-assisted metal metathesis. Furthermore, the gas adsorption and separation performance of these two MOFs were systematically investigated. Compared to Fe-MOF, Cr-MOF shows a moderately higher CO₂, C₂H₂ and C₂H₄ uptake capacity. Additionally, Cr-MOF can selectively adsorb C₂H₂ over CO₂ and C₂H₄. The separation potential towards C₂H₂/C₂H₄ and C₂H₂/CO₂ was further established via IAST calculations of mixture adsorption equilibrium. IAST selectivity values of Cr-MOF are 3.4 for C₂H₂/C₂H₄ and 6.9 for C₂H₂/CO₂ at 298 K and initial pressure, indicating its potential C₂H₂ separation ability.

Catalytic Degradation of Polyethylene Terephthalate Using a Phase-Transitional Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is utilized as one of the most popular consumer plastics worldwide, but difficulties associated with recycling PET have generated a severe environmental crisis with most PET ending its lifecycle in landfills. We report that zirconium-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) UiO-66 deconstructs waste PET into the building blocks terephthalic acid (TA) and mono-methyl terephthalate (MMT) within 24 hours at 260 °C (total yield of 98 % under 1 atm H₂ and 81 % under 1 atm Ar). Extensive structural characterization studies reveal that during the degradation process, UiO-66 undergoes an intriguing transformation into MIL-140A, which is another Zr-MOF that shows good catalytic activity toward PET degradation under similar reaction conditions. These results illustrate the diversity of applications for Zr-MOFs and establish MOFs as a new class of polymer degradation catalysts with the potential to address long-standing challenges associated with plastic waste.

Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks

In the past two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or porous coordination polymers (PCPs) assembled from metal ions or clusters and organic linkers via metal-ligand coordination bonds have captivated significant scientific interest on account of their high crystallinity, exceptional porosity, and tunable pore size, high modularity, and diverse functionality. The opportunity to achieve functional porous materials by design with promising properties, unattainable for solid-state materials in general, distinguishes MOFs from other classes of materials, in particular, traditional porous materials such as activated carbon, silica, and zeolites, thereby leading to complementary properties. Scientists have conducted intense research in the production of chiral MOF (CMOF) materials for specific applications including but not limited to chiral recognition, separation, and catalysis since the discovery of the first functional CMOF (i.e., d- or l-POST-1). At present, CMOFs have become interdisciplinary between chirality chemistry, coordination chemistry, and material chemistry, which involve in many subjects including chemistry, physics, optics, medicine, pharmacology, biology, crystal engineering, environmental science, etc. In this review, we will systematically summarize the recent progress of CMOFs regarding design strategies, synthetic approaches, and cutting-edge applications. In particular, we will highlight the successful implementation of CMOFs in asymmetric catalysis, enantioselective separation, enantioselective recognition, and sensing. We envision that this review will provide readers a good understanding of CMOF chemistry and, more importantly, facilitate research endeavors for the rational design of multifunctional CMOFs and their industrial implementation.

Spatial distribution modulation of mixed building blocks in metal-organic frameworks

The placement of mixed building blocks at precise locations in metal–organic frameworks is critical to creating pore environments suitable for advanced applications. Here we show that the spatial distribution of mixed building blocks in metal–organic frameworks can be modulated by exploiting the different temperature sensitivities of the diffusion coefficients and exchange rate constants of the building blocks. By tuning the reaction temperature of the forward linker exchange from one metal–organic framework to another isoreticular metal–organic framework, core–shell microstructural and uniform microstructural metal–organic frameworks are obtained. The strategy can be extended to the fabrication of inverted core–shell microstructures and multi-shell microstructures and applied for the modulation of the spatial distribution of framework metal ions during the post-synthetic metal exchange process of a Zn-based metal–organic framework to an isostructural Ni-based metal–organic framework.

Gaining control over the structure of metal organic–frameworks can be challenging. Here the authors report the modulation of the spatial distribution of mixed building blocks in a metal–organic framework from a uniform to a core–shell distribution; temperature control plays a crucial role.

Composite SPE Paper Membrane Based on the Functional Superstructure of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Ionic Liquids for Detection of Tetracycline-like Antibiotics

Composite adsorbents based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent candidates for solid-phase extraction (SPE) due to their diverse chemical functionality and multilevel porosity. MOF superstructures based on self-assembly at room temperature (RT) could have less energy consumption and easier manipulation due to the larger complex geometry. The π-π stacking of the benzene ring could not only enhance the interaction toward hydrophobic or plane-structured targets but also be expected to promote the formation of the MOF superstructure. In this work, in the established RT self-assembly synthesis system, several factors were investigated to see how to obtain functional MOF superstructures with a regular geometry, among which the number of benzene rings in the ligand was mainly tested for its impact on self-assembly and adsorption capacity. By means of adsorption experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, the relationship between structure and activity (SARs) was further explored. Interestingly, the MOF unit with the lowest specific surface area performed the best in adsorption. Then, the selected functional MOF superstructure and ionic liquid were used to produce the composite paper membrane facilely applied in the SPE device. After optimization of the preparation conditions and operation parameters, the established SPE-HPLC-UV method could selectively analyze tetracycline-like antibiotics in the range of 16.6-833.3 ng/g (ppb) in a meat sample. This work provided an RT synthesis method to produce a microsize MOF superstructure, with experimental and theoretical insights into the SARs, which could be expanded in the design of other MOF-based SPE composite membranes toward one group of analogues.

[Pt1Ag37(SAdm)21(Dppp)3Cl6]2+: intercluster transformation and photochemical properties

A novel [Pt1Ag37(SAdm)21(Dppp)3Cl6]2+ nanocluster is reported, and the reaction with PPh3 triggers an intercluster transformation into [Pt1Ag28(SAdm)18(PPh3)4]2+. Using chiral Bdpp, the enantiomeric Pt1Ag37(SAdm)21(R/S-Bdpp)3Cl6 can be prepared.

Quest for Extended Coordination Networks from High Connected Azido-Bridged Clusters

Molecular Cleavage of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Application to Energy Storage and Conversion

The physicochemical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) significantly depend on composition, topology, and porosity, which can be tuned via synthesis. In addition to a classic direct synthesis, postsynthesis modulations of MOFs, including ion exchange, installation, and destruction, can significantly expand the application. Because of a limitation of the qualitative hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) theory, posttreatment permits regulation of MOF structure by cleaving chemical bonds at the molecular level. Here, methods of coordination bond scission to tailor the structure are critically appraised and the application to energy storage and conversion is assessed. MOF structures synthesized by molecular-level coordination bond cleavage are described and the corresponding MOFs for electrocatalysis and renewable battery applications are evaluated. Significant emphasis is placed on various coordination bond cleavage to tune properties, including chemical groups, electronic structures, and morphologies. The review concludes with a critical perspective on practical application, together with challenges and future outlook for this emerging field.

Double-Ligand Strategy to Construct an Inhibitor-Loaded Zn-MOF and Its Corrosion Protection Ability for Aluminum Alloy 2A12

A promising double-ligand strategy for the delivery of active corrosion inhibitors by a Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) is developed. Zn-MOF compounds were synthesized by a facile one-pot solvothermal method and characterized. The Zn-MOF is based on the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (H₂FDA) ligand, which is a promising renewable building block alternative to terephthalic or isophthalic acid. The crystal structure and morphology are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, powder X-ray diffraction analysis (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The synthesized MOF crystallites are in the trigonal space group R3c with the cell parameters in a three-dimensional (3D) anionic framework. Their ability to inhibit the corrosion process of aluminum alloy 2A12 in NaCl solution was also evaluated by immersion tests in solutions with and without a MOF. The postcorrosion analysis was performed by SEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Additional information about the inhibition efficiency was obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results suggest that the as-synthesized MOF can release the inhibitors and form protective layers effectively on the surface of the aluminum alloy. The use of inhibitor-loaded MOF nanocontainers provides promising opportunities for the smart delivery of inhibitors and effective corrosion protection of 2A12 aluminum alloys.

Visible-Light-Driven C-N Bond Formation by a Hexanickel Cluster Substituted Polyoxometalate-Based Photocatalyst

A powerful and attractive route to develop novel photocatalysts for C-N bond formation involves the use of pyrrolidine as the substrate and cocatalyst simultaneously. Herein, a new polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic framework, namely, [Ni₆(OH)₃(H₂O)₉(DPNDIH)(SiW₉O₃₄)]₂·2H₂O (SiW₉Ni₆-DPNDI) (DPNDI = N,N'-di(4-pyridyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide), was prepared by incorporating a Ni₆ cluster-substituted POM anion and a photosensitizer (DPNDI) into a framework. The anion···π interactions and covalent bonds between SiW₉Ni₆ and DPNDI are beneficial for the consecutive electron separation and transfer. Under visible-light irradiation, DPNDI can be easily excited to generate radical species DPNDI* that could be further excited in the presence of the electron donor pyrrolidine for the inert O₂ activation. SiW₉Ni₆-DPNDI showed a high efficiency in the photocatalysis of C-N bond formation under a mild condition by the synergy of DPNDI and SiW₉Ni₆. The results of the reaction were confirmed by gas chromatography and ¹H NMR. In addition, SiW₉Ni₆-DPNDI exhibited a high sustainability without an obvious change in yields after five cycles.

Intermediate snapshots of a 116-nuclear metallosupramolecular cage-of-cage in a homogeneous single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation

Soaking crystals of an AuI72CdII40NaI4 cage-of-cage in aqueous Co(NO3)2 afforded an analogous AuI72CoII44 cage-of-cage, accompanied by the exchange of NaI and CdII by CoII with retention of the single crystallinity. The homogeneous progress of the transformation led to the direct observation of intermediate species by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.

In Situ Porphyrin Substitution in a Zr(IV)-MOF for Stability Enhancement and Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Despite numerous inherent merits of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), structural fragility has imposed great restrictions on their wider involvement in many applications, such as in catalysis. Herein, a strategy for enhancing stability and enabling functionality in a labile Zr(IV)-MOF has been proposed by in situ porphyrin substitution. A size- and geometry-matched robust linear porphyrin ligand 4,4'-(porphyrin-5,15-diyl)dibenzolate (DCPP^2- ) is selected to replace the 4,4'-(1,3,6,8-tetraoxobenzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-2,7(1H,3H,6H,8H)-diyl)dibenzoate (NDIDB^2- ) ligand in the synthesis of BUT-109(Zr), affording BUT-110 with varied porphyrin contents. Compared to BUT-109(Zr), the chemical stability of BUT-110 series is greatly improved. Metalloporphyrin incorporation endows BUT-110 MOFs with high catalytic activity in the photoreduction of CO₂ , in the absence of photosensitizers. By tuning the metal species and porphyrin contents in BUT-110, the resulting BUT-110-50%-Co is demonstrated to be a good photocatalyst for selective CO₂ -to-CO reduction, via balancing the chemical stability, photocatalytic efficiency, and synthetic cost. This work highlights the advantages of in situ ligand substitution for MOF modification, by which uniform distribution and high content of the incoming ligand are accessible in the resulting MOFs. More importantly, it provides a promising approach to convert unstable MOFs, which mainly constitute the vast MOF database but have always been neglected, into robust functional materials.

Ligand exchange reactions on thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters

As a versatile post-synthesis modification method, ligand exchange reaction exhibits great potential to extend the space of accessible nanoclusters. In this review, we summarized this process for thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters. In order to better understand this reaction we will first provide the necessary background on the synthesis and structure of various gold clusters, such as Au25(SR)18, Au38(SR)24, and Au102(SR)44. The previous investigations illustrated that ligand exchange is enabled by the chemical properties and flexible gold-sulfur interface of nanoclusters. It is generally believed that ligand exchange follows a SN2-like mechanism, which is supported both by experiments and calculations. More interesting, several studies show that ligand exchange takes place at preferred sites, i.e. thiolate groups -SR, on the ligand shell of nanoclusters. With the help of ligand exchange reactions many functionalities could be imparted to gold nanoclusters including the introduced of chirality to achiral nanoclusters, size transformation and phase transfer of nanoclusters, and the addition of fluorescence or biological labels. Ligand exchange was also used to amplify the enantiomeric excess of an intrinsically chiral cluster. Ligand exchange reaction accelerates the prosperity of the nanocluster field, and also extends the diversity of precise nanoclusters.

Recent progress in metal-organic framework/graphene-derived materials for energy storage and conversion: design, preparation, and application

Graphene or chemically modified graphene, because of its high specific surface area and abundant functional groups, provides an ideal template for the controllable growth of metal-organic framework (MOF) particles. The nanocomposite assembled from graphene and MOFs can effectively overcome the limitations of low stability and poor conductivity of MOFs, greatly widening their application in the field of electrochemistry. Furthermore, it can also be utilized as a versatile precursor due to the tunable structure and composition for various derivatives with sophisticated structures, showing their unique advantages and great potential in many applications, especially energy storage and conversion. Therefore, the related studies have been becoming a hot research topic and have achieved great progress. This review summarizes comprehensively the latest methods of synthesizing MOFs/graphene and their derivatives, and their application in energy storage and conversion with a detailed analysis of the structure-property relationship. Additionally, the current challenges and opportunities in this field will be discussed with an outlook also provided.

Supramolecular Cu(ii)–dipyridyl frameworks featuring weakly coordinating dodecaborate dianions for selective gas separation

Several novel weakly coordinating dodecaborate anion hybrid supramolecular Cu(ii)–dipyridyl frameworks were synthesized and characterized by single crystal analysis with one potential for selective C₂H₂/C₂H₄ and C₂H₂/CO₂ separation.

Incorporation of homogeneous organometallic catalysts into metal–organic frameworks for advanced heterogenization: a review

The heterogenization of homogeneous organometallic catalysts by incorporation into MOFs using different strategies, MOF selection, OMC selection, and the use of hybrid heterogeneous catalysts OMC@MOFs in catalytic applications are summarized and discussed.

Recent progress of MOF-derived porous carbon materials for microwave absorption

Microwave absorbing materials (MAM) have attracted considerable attention over the years in stealth and information technologies. Metal–organic framework (MOF) with a unique microstructure and electronic state has become an attractive focus as self-sacrificing precursors of microwave absorbers. The MOF-derived porous carbon (PC) materials exhibit a high absorbing performance due to the stable three-dimensional structure and homogeneous distribution of metal particles. MOF-derived PC materials are promising for ideal MAM via tuning of the structure and composition, resulting in appropriate impedance matching and the synergistic effect between magnetic and dielectric loss. In this review, the MOF-derived PC materials and their basic absorption mechanisms (dielectric loss, magnetic loss and impedance matching) are introduced, as well as the characters of various MOF-derived PC materials. In addition, this review provides a comprehensive introduction and tabulates the recent progress based on the classification of the MOF-derived metallic state, such as pure PC (without reduced metals), mono-metal/PC, multi-metal/PC, metal oxides/PC and other derived PC composites. Finally, the challenges faced by MOF-derived PC materials are overviewed, and their further development is mentioned.
