Abstract
Midinfrared nonlinear optical (NLO) rare earth chalcogenides have attracted extensive research interest in recent several decades. Employing charge-transfer engineering strategy in the early stage, rigid tetrahedral [GeS4] was introduced into rare-earth sulfides to synthesize KYGeS4, which had an enlarged band gap while maintaining a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) effect. Based on KYGeS4, La was equivalently substituted to successfully synthesize KLaGeS4 with a stronger SHG effect (dij = 1.2 × AgGaS2) and lower cost. Meanwhile, a larger band gap (Eg = 3.34 eV) was retained and realized phase matching (Δn = 0.098 @ 1064 nm). KLaGeS4 enabled an effective balance among band gap, SHG effect, and birefringence, making it a promising candidate for infrared NLO optical materials among various rare-earth sulfides.

Abstract
This work aimed to alleviate the limitations of existing mid-infrared nonlinear-optics (MIR-NLO) crystals by conducting theoretical research on 1D-[MX2]∞ (1D = one-dimensional; M = metallic element; X = anionic element) structures in relation to NLO. An analysis was conducted on the electronic structure and optical properties of six selenides (BaZnGeSe4, KxBa1-x/2Ga2Se4, KxBa1-x/2GayIn2-ySe4, KxBa1-x/2In2Se4, BaZnSiSe4, SrZnSiSe4) and three arsenides (Cs2SnAs2, Rb2SnAs2, K2SnAs2) using first principles. Afterwards, the inherent characteristics of these 1D-[MX2]∞ chains were further examined. The calculation results suggest that the presence of internal distortion (non-centrosymmetric) and high electronegativity in M elements can greatly enhance the NLO capability of 1D-[MX2]∞ structures. Furthermore, the first-ever prediction of K2SnAs2's NLO ability has been made. Ultimately, the establishment of a theoretical structure (K2BaSn2As4) provides guidance for the subsequent creation of high-performance MIR-NLO crystals.

Abstract
Infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with strong NLO response, wide band gap and high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) are highly expected in current laser technologies. Herein, by introducing double alkaline-earth metal (AEM) atoms, three wide band gap selenide IR NLO materials AIIMg6Ga6Se16 (AII = Ca, Sr, Ba) with excellent linear and NLO optical properties have been rationally designed and fabricated. AIIMg6Ga6Se16 (AII = Ca, Sr, Ba) are composed of unique [AIISe6] triangular prisms, [MgSe6] octahedra and [GaSe4] tetrahedra. The introduction of double AEMs effectively broadens the band gaps of selenide-based IR NLO materials. Among them, CaMg6Ga6Se16, achieving the best balance between the second-harmonic generation response (∼1.5 × AgGaS2), wide band gap (2.71 eV), high LIDT (∼9 × AgGaS2), and moderate birefringence of 0.052 @ 1064 nm, is a promising NLO candidate for high power IR laser. Theoretical calculations indicate that the NLO responses and band gaps among the three compounds are mainly determined by the NLO-active [GaSe4] units. The results enrich the chemical diversity of chalcogenides, and give some insight into the design of new functional materials based on the rare [AIISe6] prismatic units.

Abstract
Noncentrosymmetric chalcogenides are promising candidates for infrared nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystals, and exploring high-performance ones is a hot topic and challengeable. Herein, the combination of AgQ4, InQ4, and SiQ4 (Q = S, Se) units with different S/Se ratios resulted in the discovery of the tetrahedral chalcogenides Ag2In2SiS4Se2 (1) and Ag2In2SiS5Se (2). They both crystallize in the monoclinic Cc space group with different local structures. Co-occupied S/Se sites only exist in 2, and the arrangement of [In2SiQ3] six-membered rings builds different helical chains and 3D [(In2SiQ6)2-]n polyanionic frameworks in 1 and 2. They show balanced NLO performances, including phase-matchable moderate NLO responses (0.7 and 0.5 × AGS) and enhanced laser-induced damage thresholds (4.5 and 5.1 × AGS). Theoretical calculations reveal that their NLO responses are predominantly contributed by the AgQ4 and InQ4 units.

Abstract
Non-centrosymmetric (NCS) and polar materials capable of exhibiting many important functional properties are indispensable for electro-optical technologies, yet their rational structural design remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a "group grafting" strategy for designing the first multi-chromophore selenophosphate, Cs3In(In4Se7)(P2Se6), that crystallizes in a NCS and polar space group of Cm. The structure features a unique basic building unit (BBU) [In(In4Se10)(P2Se6)], formed through "grafting [In4Se10] supertetrahedra on the root of [In(P2Se6)2] groups". Theoretical calculations confirm that this [In(In4Se10)(P2Se6)] BBU can achieve a "1+1>2" combination of properties from two chromophores, [In4Se10] supertetrahedron and ethane-like [P2Se6] dimer. That makes Cs3In(In4Se7)(P2Se6) exhibit excellent linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, including a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response (~6×AgGaS2), a large band gap (2.45 eV), broad infrared (IR) transmission (up to 19.5 μm), a significant birefringence (0.26 @1064 nm) as well as the congruently-melting property at ~700 °C. Therefore, Cs3In(In4Se7)(P2Se6) will be a promising NLO crystal, especially in the IR region, and this research also demonstrates that "group grafting" will be an effective strategy for constructing novel polar BBUs with multi-chromophore to design NCS structures and high-performance IR NLO materials.

Abstract
It is substantially challenging for non-centrosymmetric (NCS) Hg-based chalcogenides for infrared nonlinear optical (IR-NLO) applications to realize wide band gap (Eg > 3.0 eV) and sufficient phase-matching (PM) second-harmonic-generation intensity (deff > 1.0 × benchmark AgGaS2 ) simultaneously due to the inherent incompatibility. To address this issue, this work presents a diagonal synergetic substitution strategy for creating two new NCS quaternary Hg-based chalcogenides, AEHgGeS4 (AE = Sr and Ba), based on the centrosymmetric (CS) AEIn2 S4 . The derived AEHgGeS4 displays excellent NLO properties such as a wide Eg (≈3.04-3.07 eV), large PM deff (≈2.2-3.0 × AgGaS2 ), ultra-high laser-induced damage threshold (≈14.8-15 × AgGaS2 ), and suitable Δn (≈0.19-0.24@2050 nm), making them highly promising candidates for IR-NLO applications. Importantly, such excellent second-order NLO properties are primarily attributed to the synergistic combination of tetrahedral [HgS4 ] and [GeS4 ] functional primitives, as supported by detailed theoretical calculations. This study reports the first two NCS Hg-based materials with well-balanced comprehensive properties (i.e., Eg > 3.0 eV and deff > 1.0 × benchmark AgGaS2 ) and puts forward a new design avenue for the construction of more efficient IR-NLO candidates.

Abstract
Noncentrosymmetric phosphides have garnered significant attention as promising systems of infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, a new quaternary diamond-like phosphide family I-III-IV2-V4 and its inaugural member, namely, CuInSi2P4 (CISP), were successfully fabricated by isovalent and aliovalent substitution based on ZnGeP2. First-principles calculations revealed that CISP has a large NLO coefficient (d14 = 110.8 pm/V), which can be attributed to the well-aligned tetrahedral [CuP4], [InP4], and [SiP4] units. Remarkably, the extremely small thermal expansion anisotropy (0.09) of CISP enables it to exhibit a considerable laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT, 5.0 × AgGaS2@1.06 μm) despite the relatively narrow band gap (0.81 eV). This work improves the chemical diversity of inorganic phosphide and promotes the development of phosphide systems, which may provide valuable perspectives for future exploration of IR NLO materials.

Abstract
Hg-based chalcogenides, as good candidates for the exploration of high-performance infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, usually exhibit strong NLO effects, but narrow bandgaps. Herein, an unprecedented wide bandgap Hg-based IR NLO material Zn2 HgP2 S8 (ZHPS) with diamond-like structure is rationally designed and fabricated by a tetrahedron re-organization strategy with the aid of structure and property predictions. ZHPS exhibits a wide bandgap of 3.37 eV, which is the largest one among the reported Hg-based chalcogenide IR NLO materials and first breaks the 3.0 eV bandgap "wall" in this system, resulting in a high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of ≈2.2 × AgGaS2 (AGS). Meanwhile, it shows a large NLO response (1.1 × AGS), achieving a good balance between bandgap (≥3.0 eV) and NLO effect (≥1 × AGS) for an excellent IR NLO material. DFT calculations uncover that, compared to normal [HgS4 ]n , highly distorted [HgS4 ]d tetrahedral units are conducive to generating wide bandgap, and the wide bandgap in ZHPS can be attributed to the strong s-p hybridization between Hg─S bonding in distorted [HgS4 ]d , which gives some insights into the design of Hg-based chalcogenides with excellent properties based on distorted [HgS4 ]d tetrahedra.

Abstract
The performance prerequisites for nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals encompass a substantial second-harmonic generation (SHG), a considerable laser induced damage threshold, and a moderate degree of birefringence. Nevertheless, the presence of particular anions may result in deficiencies within certain properties. The utilization of mixed anionic groups has emerged as an effective strategy to achieve a balance among numerous performance parameters of NLO crystals, particularly in terms of SHG responses and bandgaps. Compared with other heteroanionic compounds, adduct-type compounds feature more concise structures with specific properties. Herein, we aim to provide an overview of the recent advancements in adduct-type NLO crystals, focusing on their structures and properties. Furthermore, we analyze the coordination chemistry and disadvantages involved in adducts, and discuss the current synthesis methods as well as future directions for further exploration.

In this work, a number of new infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals of LixAg1-xInSe2, in which the ratio x of Li/Ag varies in a wide range from 0 to 1, are investigated. Structural analysis reveals that the space group of LixAg1-xInSe2 evolved from I4̅2d in AgInSe2 to Pna21 in LiInSe2 as x increases from low values (0, 0.2, 0.37) to large values (0.55, 0.78, 0.81, 1). Compared to other Li/Ag coexisting chalcogenides such as LixAg1-xGaS2 and LixAg1-xGaSe2, the structural distortions in LixAg1-xInSe2 are much more prominent. This may explain the limited crystallization region in the phase graph of the tetragonal structure LixAg1-xInSe2. The fundamental optical absorption edges in these LixAg1-xInSe2 compounds are determined from the direct electronic transitions and the band gaps Eg gradually increase as the lithium content increases, consistent with the first-principles calculations. The composition x = 0.78 is calculated to have a good set of optical properties with a large NLO coefficient (dpowder = 28.8 pm/V) and moderate birefringence (Δn ∼ 0.04). Accordingly, the Li0.78Ag0.22InSe2 crystal is grown by the modified Bridgman-Stockbarger method, and it exhibits a wide transparency range from 0.546 to 14.3 μm at the 2% transmittance level.

Abstract
Salt-inclusion chalcogenides (SICs) have been receiving widespread attention due to their large second harmonic generation (SHG) responses and wide bandgaps, however most of them suffer from small birefringence limiting their technical application. Herein, by introducing the π-conjugated (S2 )2- units in the ionic guest of salt-inclusion structure, the first disulfide-bond-containing SIC, [Ba4 (S2 )][ZnGa4 S10 ] has been synthesized. It exhibits the widest bandgap up to 3.39 eV among polychalcogenides and strong SHG response as large as that of AgGaS2 (AGS). Importantly, its birefringence reaches a max value of 0.053@1064 nm among AGS-like SICs, indicating it is a promising IR nonlinear optical (NLO) material. Theoretical calculations reveal that the π-conjugated (S2 )2- units and covalent GaS layers favor the enhanced birefringence and large SHG response. This work provides not only a new type of SIC for the first time, but also new lights on the design of IR NLO materials.

Abstract
The balance between large nonlinear optical (NLO) effect and wide bandgap is the key scientific issue for the exploration of infrared NLO materials. Targeting this issue, two new pentanary chalcogenides KGaGe1.37 Sn0.63 S6 (1) and KGaGe1.37 Sn0.63 Se6 (2) are obtained by the three-in-one strategy, viz. three types of fourfold-coordinated metal elements co-occupying the same site. They crystallize in the tetragonal P43 (1) and monoclinic Cc (2) space group. Their structures can be evolved from benchmark AgGaS2 (AGS) by suitable substitution. Remarkably, 1 is the first NLO sulfide crystallizing with the P43 space group, representing a new structure-type NLO material. The structural relationship between 1 and 2 and the evolution from 1, 2 to AGS are also analyzed. Both 1 and 2 show balanced NLO properties. Specifically, 1 exhibits phase-matchable SHG response of 0.6 × AGS, a wide bandgap of 3.50 eV, and a high laser damage threshold of 6.24 × AGS. Theoretical calculation results suggest that the Ga/Ge/Sn element ratios of the co-occupied sites of 1 and 2 are the most appropriate for stabilizing the structures. The strategy adopted here will provide some inspiration for exploring new high-performance NLO materials.

Abstract
Exploration of new functional materials with enhanced performance from known ones is always an attractive strategy. A new infrared (IR) nonlinear-optical (NLO) mixed chalcogenide Ag2In2SiS3.06Se2.94 (1), was obtained through partial congener substitution originated from Ag2In2SiS6 (0). 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cc, and its three-dimensional (3D) polyanionic network is composed of {[In4Si2Se5(S/Se)11]12-}∞ helical chains sharing S/Se(5) corner atoms with cavities embedded with counterion Ag+ ions. It exhibits a much enhanced NLO response compared to that of 0, reaching 1.1 × AgGaS2. Further theoretical analysis results indicate that the large NLO response can be attributed to the synergistic effect of AgQ4 and InQ4 tetrahedral functional motifs. This work not only reports a new high-performance IR NLO material but also enriches the partial ion substitution strategy to obtain new functional materials.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals capable of efficient long-wave infrared (8-14 μm) laser output remain scarce, and the exploration of long-wave IR NLO materials with superior comprehensive optical performances is a momentous challenge. Herein, we develop two selenide-halide NLO crystals, Hg3AsSe4Br and Hg3AsSe4I, which are derived from the honeycomb layered topology of prototype GaSe. Remarkably, they exhibit not only strong SHG effects, suitable band gap, large birefringence, broad IR transparency range and low two-photon absorption coefficients but reinforced interlayer interaction and more benign crystal growth habit, compared to those of GaSe, indicating that they are promising long-wave IR NLO materials. Moreover, Hg3AsSe4I achieved better comprehensive optical properties than conventional IR crystals, GaSe, ZnGeP2, CdSe and AgGaSe2. The idea of honeycomb layered topology construction provides a material design heuristic to explore cutting-edge IR NLO materials.

Abstract
Inorganic chalcogenides have been studied as the most promising infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) candidates for the past decades. However, it is proven difficult to discover high-performance materials that combine the often-incompatible properties of large energy gap (Eg ) and strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response (deff ), especially for rare-earth chalcogenides. Herein, centrosymmetric Cs3 [Sb3 O6 ][Ge2 O7 ] is selected as a maternal structure and a new noncentrosymmetric rare-earth oxychalcogenide, namely, Nd3 [Ga3 O3 S3 ][Ge2 O7 ], is successfully designed and obtained by the module substitution strategy for the first time. Especially, Nd3 [Ga3 O3 S3 ][Ge2 O7 ] is the first case of breaking the trade-off relationship between wide Eg (>3.5 eV) and large deff (>0.5 × AgGaS2 ) in rare-earth chalcogenide system, and thus displays an outstanding IR-NLO comprehensive performance. Detailed structure analyses and theoretical studies reveal that the NLO effect originates mainly from the cooperation of heteroanionic [GaO2 S2 ] and [NdO2 S6 ] asymmetric building blocks. This work not only presents an excellent rare-earth IR-NLO candidate, but also plays a crucial role in the rational structure design of other NLO materials in which both large Eg and strong deff are pursued.

Abstract
Complete substitution of Li atoms for Ag atoms in AgGaSe2 and AgInSe2 was achieved, resulting in the solid solutions LixAg1-xGaSe2 and LixAg1-xInSe2. The detailed crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which confirm that Li atoms occupy unique sites and disorder only with Ag atoms. The tetragonal CuFeS2-type structure (space group I4̅2d) was retained within the entirety of the Ga-containing solid solution LixAg1-xGaSe2, which is noteworthy because the end-member LiGaSe2 normally adopts the orthorhombic β-NaFeO2-type structure (space group Pna21). These structures are closely related, being superstructures of the cubic sphalerite and hexagonal wurtzite prototypes adopted by diamond-like semiconductors. For the In-containing solid solution LixAg1-xInSe2, the structure transforms from the tetragonal to orthorhombic forms as the Li content increases past x = 0.50. The optical band gaps increase gradually with higher Li content, from 1.8 to 3.4 eV in LixAg1-xGaSe2 and from 1.2 to 2.5 eV in LixAg1-xInSe2, enabling control to desired values, while the second harmonic generation responses become stronger or are similar to those of benchmark infrared nonlinear optical materials such as AgGaS2. All members of these solid solutions remain congruently melting at accessible temperatures between 800 and 900 °C. Electronic structure calculations support the linear trends seen in the optical band gaps and confirm the mostly ionic character present in Li-Se bonds, in contrast to the more covalent character in Ga-Se or In-Se bonds.

Abstract
The discovery of new functional materials is attractive since they have the opportunity to change some important fields. Of these materials, oxychalcogenides constitute an increasing type of nonlinear optical (NLO) material. Herein, a new rare-earth oxythiogermanate Eu3GeOS4 crystallizing with a polar orthorhombic Pca21 structure is studied. Its three-dimensional structure is constructed from unique [EuOS6] monocapped trigonal prisms and isolated [GeOS3] tetrahedra, featuring a new type of oxysulfides. Its band gap is 2.05 eV, and it exhibits obvious second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and high laser-induced damage threshold. In addition, Eu3GeOS4 exhibits Curie-Weiss ferromagnetic behavior in the high-temperature region. The SHG effect is ascribed to the synergistic effect of [EuOS6] and [GeOS3] units based on theoretical calculation results. This work is the first investigation of quaternary rare-earth oxythiogermanates as NLO materials.

Abstract
As one type of material containing multiple anions, oxysulfides can combine the advantages of oxides and sulfides and are deeply studied as nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials. Herein, a new melilite-type pentanary oxysulfide Sr2CoGe2OS6 is studied. It crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal space group P4̅21m, and its structure features GeOS3 and CoS4 tetrahedra-built {[CoGe2OS6]4-}∞ layers. Its powder sample exhibits a moderate phase-matchable NLO response and a high laser-induced damage threshold. The NLO response is mainly determined by CoS4 tetrahedra according to the theoretical calculation results. This work indicates that transition-metal oxysulfides can also be considered as potential infrared NLO materials.

Abstract
The acquisition of a non-centrosymmetric (NCS) structure and achieving a nice trade-off between a large energy gap (E g > 3.5 eV) and a strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response (d eff > 1.0 × benchmark AgGaS2) are two formidable challenges in the design and development of infrared nonlinear optical (IR-NLO) candidates. In this work, a new quaternary NCS sulfide, SrCdSiS4, has been rationally designed using the centrosymmetric SrGa2S4 as the template via a dual-site aliovalent substitution strategy. SrCdSiS4 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Ama2 (no. 40) and features a unique two-dimensional [CdSiS4]2- layer constructed from corner- and edge-sharing [CdS4] and [SiS4] basic building units (BBUs). Remarkably, SrCdSiS4 displays superior IR-NLO comprehensive performances, and this is the first report on an alkaline-earth metal-based IR-NLO material that breaks through the incompatibility between a large E g (>3.5 eV) and a strong phase-matching d eff (>1.0 × AgGaS2). In-depth mechanism explorations strongly demonstrate that the synergistic effect of distorted tetrahedral [CdS4] and [SiS4] BBUs is the main origin of the strong SHG effect and large birefringence. This work not only provides a high-performance IR-NLO candidate, but also offers a feasible chemical design strategy for constructing NCS structures.

Abstract
Herein, a novel IR NLO oxytelluride Sr3Ge2O4Te3 was successfully designed and synthesized through a "partial O-to-Te substitution" strategy. Compared with the parent oxide, Sr3Ge2O4Te3 not only successfully achieves a phase-matchability transition (from NPM to PM), but also greatly improves the linear and NLO performances, including a wide band gap (2.26 eV), strong SHG response (1.3 × AgGaSe2) and large optical anisotropy (Δn = 0.152@2090 nm). The analyses of the structure-property relationship and SHG-density indicate that the bridging oxygen in the [O3Ge-O-GeTe3] prism unit plays the most important role in the multiplication SHG effect. This work provides some insights into the design and exploration of novel IR NLO materials.

Abstract
The symmetry of crystals is an extremely important property of crystals. Crystals can be divided into centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric crystals. In this paper, an infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) material AgGaGeSe4 was synthesized. The related performance analysis, nonlinear optical properties, and first-principle calculation of AgGaGeSe4 were also introduced in detail. In the AgGaGeSe4 structure, Ge4+ was replaced with Ga3+ and produced the same number of vacancies at the Ag+ position. The low content of Ge doping kept the original chalcopyrite structure and improved its optical properties such as the band gap. The UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectrum shows that the experimental energy band gap of AgGaGeSe4 is 2.27 eV, which is 0.48 eV larger than that of AgGaSe2 (1.79 eV). From the perspective of charge-transfer engineering strategy, the introduction of Group IV Ge elements into the crystal structure of AgGaSe2 effectively improves its band gap. The second harmonic generation (SHG) effect of AgGaGeSe4 is similar to that of AgGaSe2, and at 1064 nm wavelength, the birefringence of AgGaGeSe4 is 0.03, which is greater than that of AgGaSe2 (∆n = 0.02). The results show that AgGaGeSe4 possessed better optical properties than AgGaSe2, and can been broadly applied as a good infrared NLO material.

Abstract
The achievement of balanced performance with a strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, proper birefringence, and wide band gap concurrently is a crucial but challenging task in infrared nonlinear optical (IR-NLO) crystals. Here, we theoretically confirmed that the heteroanionic oxysulfide tetrahedron would produce improved polarizability anisotropy and quadratic hyperpolarizability compared with the monoanionic oxide or sulfide tetrahedra. When this anion-mixing strategy was applied, melilite oxysulfide with the four representative members A2GeGa2OS6 (A = Ca, Sr) and Sr2MGe2OS6 (M = Zn, Cd) was successfully discovered as a promising IR-NLO material system. Remarkably, compared with the monoanionic melilite oxides, these compounds exhibited unbiased performances of proper birefringences (0.106-0.143), strong SHG responses (>10× melilite oxide Ba2CdGe2O7, 1.3-2.1× AgGaS2 (AGS) @1570 nm) with phase-matchable ability, wide band gaps (2.95-3.15 eV), and large laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs, 5.6-13.4× AGS). The high structure tolerance of melilite offers a great possibility to improve the SHG response via tuning the orbital composition and hybridization near band edges. This work provides an effective approach for the design of high-performance IR-NLO materials.

Abstract
Switchable nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have aroused broad interest on account of their captivating optical and electronic properties. We demonstrate a novel perovskite-type crystal with exceptional hydrogen bond interactions that are associated with the onset of reorientational motions of organic cations and thus induce the occurrence of two successive phase transitions to be a two-step NLO switch. This finding affords an alternative approach for the design and assembly of switchable NLO materials.

Abstract
Exploring new infrared nonlinear optical (IR NLO) materials with superior overall properties is scientifically and technically important. However, large second-order harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies and high laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDT) are incompatible, which makes realizing this goal a challenge. The IR NLO performance of an A-NIIB-MIIIA-Q (Q: chalcogen) system was optimized by simultaneously modulating A/(M + N) and M/N ratios (A: alkali metal; N, M: tetra-coordinated metals), and SHG-LIDT balance was achieved. Three new sulfides, KCd3Ga5S11 (1), RbCd4Ga3S9 (2), and Cs2Cd2Ga8S15 (3), containing the same CdS4 and GaS4 but with different A/(Ga + Cd) and Ga/Cd ratios were obtained. Among these compounds, compound 3 exhibits both the largest SHG efficiency (0.5 × AgGaS2) and LIDT (35 × AgGaS2), which can be ascribed to the Ga/Cd modulation for enhancing the NLO functional motif distortions and SHG efficiency as well as the A/(Ga + Cd) modulation for enlarging the band gap and LIDT. Remarkably, compound 3 is the first phase-matchable IR NLO material in the A-NIIB-MIIIA-Q family. This article proposes a novel avenue to explore infrared nonlinear materials with superior comprehensive properties by modulating the A/(M + N) and M/N ratios.

Abstract
Multinary rare-earth chalcogenides with d-block transition metals have attracted considerable attention owing to their intriguing structural architectures and promising practical applications. In this work, three quaternary rare-earth sulfides, Ba4RE2Cd3S10 (RE = Sm, Gd, or Tb), have been obtained by the high-temperature solid-state method. These compounds are isostructural and belong to the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Cmc21 (No. 36). The basic structural unit contains unique two-dimensional anionic [RE2Cd3S10]8- layers, which are separated by Ba2+ cations. Remarkably, Ba4Sm2Cd3S10 exhibits a high second-harmonic-generation intensity (1.8 times that of AgGaS2) and a significantly higher laser-induced damage threshold (14.3 times that of AgGaS2), which is the first case possessing an infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) property in the quaternary AE/RE/TM/Q (AE = alkaline-earth metals; RE = rare-earth metals; TM = d-block transition metals; and Q = chalcogen) systems. Moreover, theoretical investigations of the structure-property relationship indicate that the combined action of various types of NLO-active units makes the main contribution to the SHG activity. This discovery may shed light on broadening the frontiers of IR-NLO materials.

Abstract
The key to developing new infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is balancing second-order nonlinear optical effects and the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). In this paper, a new polymorph of HgBr2 (P212121) was synthesized by a "halogen-ion-induced effect" in solution, which features a crystal structure different from that of the original phase (Cmc21) and exhibits better NLO properties. Its powders show a strong SHG effect (9 × KDP), a high LIDT (30 × AgGaS2), a wide infrared transparent range, and stability in air, making it a prospective NLO material in the IR region. In addition, the above excellent NLO characteristics are well illustrated in DFT theoretical calculations. More importantly, experimental results show that the new infrared NLO polymorph with excellent comprehensive properties could be controllably obtained by using the halogen-ion-induced strategy.

Abstract
Novel nonlinear optical (NLO) materials possessing simple chemical compositions and facile syntheses are competitive when considering their practical application. Here, a series of ternary selenides GaxIn2-xSe3 (x = 0.07, 0.38, 0.45, and 0.81) that crystallize in a chiral P65 structure are obtained by melting Ga, In, and Se elements. Their three-dimensional structures are built by (Ga/In)Se4 tetrahedra and InSe5 trigonal bipyramids. The hexagonal modification's phase stability is analyzed by energy calculation, and their optical band gaps are determined to be 1.72-1.99 eV. They exhibit large NLO responses that are 1.41-1.64 times that of the benchmark AgGaS2. The results of density functional theory calculations suggest that introduction of Ga onto the In site in (InSe4)5- units can form a deformed tetrahedron with more distortion in the structure, and the (InSe5)7- units contribute a large amount of birefringence to the structure. This work is the first to investigate the ternary chalcogenides M2Q3 (M = Ga or In; Q = S or Se) as new types of infrared NLO crystals with excellent performances, which will stimulate more interest in those possessing simple compositions and outstanding performances.

Abstract
Infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are the core devices to realize IR laser output, which are of vital importance in civilian and military fields. Non-centrosymmetric chalcogenide and pnictide compounds have already been widely accepted as favorable systems for IR-NLO materials. Compared to the extensively investigated IR-NLO chalcogenides during the past few decades, the research of non-centrosymmetric phosphides as IR-NLO materials is relatively scarce. In this frontier article, the recent progress of pnictides as emerging IR-NLO candidates has been highlighted based on the perspective of new crystal exploration. These IR-NLO pnictides recently reported were divided into three groups from binary to quaternary according to their chemical compositions. The synthetic methods, structural chemistry, and structure-activity relationships are analyzed and summarized in detail. Finally, current problems and the future development of this field are also proposed.

Abstract
Increasing the energy band gap under the premise to maintain a large nonlinear optical (NLO) response is a challenging issue for the exploration and molecular design of mid-infrared nonlinear optical crystals. Utilizing a charge-transfer engineering method, we designed and synthesized a rare earth chalcogenide, KYGeS4. With an NLO effect as large as that in AgGaS2, KYGeS4 breaks through the limitation of energy band gap, i.e., the "3.0 eV wall", in NLO rare earth chalcogenides, and thus exhibits an excellent comprehensive NLO performance. First-principles electronic structure analysis demonstrates that the large band gap in KYGeS4 is ascribed to the decreased covalency of Y-S bonds by transferring charge from [YS7] to [GeS4] polyhedra. The charge-transfer engineering strategy would have significant implications for the exploration of good-performance NLO crystals.

Abstract
One of the key scientific issues for exploration of novel infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals is to obtain ones with good hybrid NLO behaviors. Herein, we report four diamond-like Ag-based sulfides via stepwise Li substitution of Ag in Ag2ZnSnS4, including Ag2ZnSnS4 (1), (Li1.22Ag0.78)ZnSnS4 (2), (Li1.58Ag0.42)ZnSnS4 (3), and Li2ZnSnS4 (4). With the increase of Li content, the sulfide's noncentrosymmetric crystal structure changes from tetragonal I42m for 1, to orthorhombic Pmn21 for 2 and 3, and to monoclinic Pn for 4. Accordingly, their NLO responses are improved along with the increase of Li content, viz. from non-NLO-active for 1, to non-phase-matchable for 2 and 3, and to phase-matchable for 4. Their optical band gaps also increase regularly. The relationship between their chemical compositions, crystal structures, and NLO activities is investigated by means of chemical structural analysis and theoretical calculation. This work offers a new systematic case for designing promising NLO-active compounds via rarely adopted cation's stepwise partial substitution and understanding the chemical composition-structure-NLO property relationship.

Abstract
A novel salt-inclusion fluoroiodate [GaF(H2O)][IO3F] derived from CsIO2F2 was ingeniously obtained through anisotropic polycation substitution. Because the catenulate [GaF(H2O)]2+ framework serves as a template for the favorable assembly of the polar [IO3F]2- groups and contributes to the nonlinear coefficient, [GaF(H2O)][IO3F] exhibits a greatly improved second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect of 10 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) and a considerable band gap of 4.34 eV compared to the parent compound CsIO2F2 (3 × KDP, 4.5 eV). Particularly, to the best of our knowledge, [GaF(H2O)][IO3F] has the largest laser-induced damage threshold (LDT) of 140 × AgGgS2 of the reported iodates. All these results signify that [GaF(H2O)][IO3F] is a promising nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal. This work also proposes that anisotropic polycation substitution is an effective approach to optimize the SHG effect and develop excellent NLO materials.
