Rare-earth metal–organic frameworks as advanced catalytic platforms for organic synthesis

High-Entropy Lanthanide-Organic Framework as an Efficient Heterogeneous Catalyst for Cycloaddition of CO2 with Epoxides and Knoevenagel Condensation

Multimetallic synergistic effects have the potential to improve CO2 cycloesterification and Knoevenagel reaction processes, outperforming monometallic MOFs. The results demonstrate superior performance in these processes. To investigate this, we created and characterized a selection of single-component Ln(III)-MOFs (Ln=Eu, Tb, Gd, Dy, Ho) and high-entropy lanthanide-organic framework (HE-LnMOF) using solvent-thermal conditions. The experiments revealed that HE-LnMOF exhibited heightened catalytic efficiency in CO2 cycloesterification and Knoevenagel reactions compared to single-component Ln(III) MOFs. Moreover, the HE-LnMOF displayed significant stability, maintaining their structural integrity after five cycles while sustaining elevated conversion and selectivity rates. The feasible mechanisms of catalytic reactions were also discussed. HE-LnMOF possess multiple unsaturated metal centers, acting as Lewis acid sites, with oxygen atoms connecting the metal, and hydroxyl groups on the ligand serving as base sites. This study introduces a novel method for synthesizing HE-LnMOF and presents a fresh application of HE-LnMOF for converting CO2.

An Octacarboxylate-Linked Sodium Metal-Organic Framework with High Porosity

Alkali metal-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with permanent porosity are scarce because of their high tendency to coordinate with solvents such as water. However, these MOFs are lightweight and bear gravimetric benefits for gas adsorption related applications. In this study, we present the successful construction of a microporous MOF, designated as HIAM-111, built solely on sodium ions by using an octacarboxylate linker. The structure of HIAM-111 is based on 8-connected Na4 clusters and exhibits a novel topology with an underlying 32,42,8-c net. Remarkably, HAM-111 possesses a robust and highly porous framework with a BET surface area of 1561 m2/g, significantly surpassing that of the previously reported Na-MOFs. Further investigations demonstrate that HIAM-111 is capable of separating C2H2/CO2 and purifying C2H4 directly from C2H4/C2H2/C2H6 with high adsorption capacities. The current work may shed light on the rational design of robust and porous MOFs based on alkali metals.

Stable Europium(III) Metal-Organic Framework Demonstrating High Proton Conductivity and Fluorescence Detection of Tetracyclines

A europium(III) metal-organic framework (MOF), namely, {[[(CH₃)₂NH₂]₃Eu₂(DTTP-2OH)₂(HCOO)(H₂O)]·4H₂O}_n (Eu-MOF, H₄DTTP-2OH = 2',5'-dihydroxy-[1,1':4',1″-terphenyl]-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid) has been assembled through solvothermal method. The Eu-MOF is a three-dimensional (3D) (4,4,8)-connected topological framework with binuclear Eu(III) clusters as secondary building units, in which a richly ordered hydrogen bonding network formed among the free H₂O molecules, dimethylamine cations, and phenolic hydroxyl groups provides a potential pathway for proton conduction. The proton conductivity reaches the category of superionic conductors (σ > 10^-4 S cm^-1) at room temperature with a maximum conductivity of 1.91 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 60 °C and 98% RH. Moreover, it also can be used as a fluorescence sensor in aqueous solution with detection limits of 0.14 μM for tetracycline, 0.13 μM for oxytetracycline and 0.11 μM for doxycycline. These results pave new methods for constructing MOFs with high proton conductivity and responsive fluorescence.

Inner transition metal-modulated metal organic frameworks (IT-MOFs) and their derived nanomaterials: a strategic approach towards stupendous photocatalysis

Photocatalysis, as an amenable and effective process, can be adopted for pollution remediation and to alleviate the ongoing energy crisis. In this case, recently, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing attention in the field of photocatalysis owning to their unique characteristics including large specific surface area, tuneable pore architecture, mouldable framework composition, tuneable band structure, and exceptional photon absorption tendency complimented with superior anti-recombination of excitons. Among the plethora of frameworks, inner transition metal based-MOFs (IT-MOFs) have started to garner significant traction as photocatalysts due to their distinct characteristics compared to conventional transition metal-based frameworks. Typically, IT-MOFs have the tendency to generate high nuclearity clusters and possess abundant Lewis acidic sites, together with mixed valency, which aids in easily converting redox couples, thereby making them a suitable candidate for various photocatalytic reactions. Therefore, in this contribution, we aim to summarise the excellent photocatalytic performance of IT-MOFs and their composites accompanied by a thorough discussion of their topological changes with a variation in the structure of the metal cluster, fabrication routes, morphological features, and physico-chemical properties together with a brief discussion of computational findings. Moreover, we attempt to explore the scientific understanding of the functionalities of IT-MOFs and their composites with detailed mechanistic pathways for in-depth clarity towards photocatalysis. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive analysis of IT-MOFs for various crucial photocatalytic applications such as H₂/O₂ evolution, organic pollutant degradation, organic transformation, and N₂ and CO₂ reduction. In addition, we discuss the measures employed to enhance their performance with some future directions to address the challenges with IT-MOF-based nanomaterials.

A new mode of luminescence in lanthanide oxalates metal–organic frameworks

Two lanthanide metal–organic frameworks [Ln-MOFs, Ln = Eu(III), Tb(III)] composed of oxalic acid and Ln building units were hydrothermally synthesized and fully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Furthermore, their magnetic susceptibility measurements were obtained using SQUID based vibrating sample magnetometer (MPMS 3, Quantum Design). Both Ln-MOFs exhibited highly efficient luminescent property. Solid-state photoluminescence (PL) measurements revealed phosphorescence emission bands of Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF centered at 618 nm (red emission) and 550 nm (green emission) upon excitation at 396 nm and 285 nm, respectively. Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF displayed a phosphorescence quantum yield of 53% and 40%, respectively. Time-resolved PL analyses showed very long lifetime values, at 600 and 1065 ± 1 µs for Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF, respectively. Calculations performed by density functional theory indicated a charge transfer form metal centres to the ligand which was in good agreement with the experimental studies. Therefore, this new mode of highly photoluminescent MOF materials is studied for the first time which paves the way for better understanding of these systems for potential applications.

Design of "turn-off" luminescent Ln-MOFs for sensitive detection of cyanide anions

Two novel 2D lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), namely {[Eu₂(DBTA)₃(DMF)₂]·DMF}_n (1) and {[Tb₂(DBTA)₃(DMF)₂]·DMF}_n (2) (H₂DBTA = 2,5-dibromoterephthalic acid), have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction results proved that the complexes possess the same topological structure of a (4²·6)₂(4²·8⁴)(4⁷·6³)₂-connected net. The recognition of CN^- from interfering anions with a low detection limit by "turn-off" luminescence makes them promising candidates for the highly selective and sensitive detection of the cyanide ion. The Ln-MOFs 1 and 2 exhibit excellent chemical sensing properties for CN^- with efficiency, selectivity, and excellent performance in various mixed anions. The evaluation parameters, including the quenching constant and detection limit, have been investigated to obtain the detection performance for CN^-.

Partially Ordered Lanthanide Carboxylates with a Highly Adaptable 1D Polymeric Structure

A new family of 14 isostructural [Ln(piv)₃(en)]_∞ lanthanide pivalate (piv⁻, 2,2-dimethylpropanoate) complexes with ethylenediamine (en) was synthesized by a topology-preserving transformation from 1D coordination polymers [Ln(piv)₃]_∞. The crystal structures of the compounds were determined by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, which demonstrated that despite the regular ligand arrangement within the chains, the latter are intricately packed within the partially ordered crystal, as only two of four ligands are strictly bound by the translational symmetry. The peculiarities of the lanthanide coordination environment were explored by total X-ray scattering with pair distribution function analysis. Periodic DFT calculations revealed the chain stabilization by intrachain H-bonds and weak interchain interactions. Noticeably, the energy difference was infinitesimally small even between the two considered extreme variants of ordered packing, which is in line with the disturbed packing order of the chains. The luminescent properties of Eu and Tb complexes were investigated in order to prove the energy transfer between lanthanide ions within the heterometallic complex. This opens up the prospect of creating new materials for optical applications. The heterometallic compound Eu_0.05Tb_0.95(piv)₃(en) was synthesized, and was found to demonstrate temperature-dependent luminescence with a linear dependence of the thermometric parameter I(Eu)/I(Tb) within the temperature range from −80 °C to 80 °C, and had a maximum relative sensitivity value of 0.2%/K.

Efficient and selective removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solution by using an O- functionalized metal-organic framework

Lead (Pb) is one of the most widespread and highly toxic heavy metals in the environment. The design and synthesis of adsorbent materials for the selective and efficient removal of Pb²⁺ from aqueous solution has received much attention. Herein, the ligand 4,4'-azoxydibenzoic acid with the O^- group was elaborately selected to construct a novel Pr-based MOF for Pb²⁺ removal. The as-prepared MOF adsorbents with high stability exhibited ultra-high selectivity for Pb²⁺, even in the presence of various highly concentrated competitive ions (with the ratios from 1 : 5 to 1 : 50). Also, a high uptake capacity (560.26 mg g^-1) can be achieved for the MOF material, due to the availability of sufficient adsorption sites. The strong electrostatic attraction and coordination interaction between the numerous active O^- sites on MOF adsorbents and Pb²⁺ can account for the good adsorption performance for Pb²⁺, which was systematically verified by zeta potential, FT-IR and XPS studies.

Accessing 14-Connected Nets: Continuous Breathing, Hydrophobic Rare-Earth Metal Organic Frameworks Based on 14-c Hexanuclear Clusters with High Affinity for Non-Polar Vapors

Highly connected metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in which at least one building block has connectivity higher than twelve are very rare and much desirable. We report here the first examples of isostructural 14-connected MOFs, RE-frt-MOF-1, constructed from the assembly of 14-c hexanuclear rare-earth clusters, [RE₆(μ₃-X)₈(COO)₁₂]^2- (RE: Y³⁺, Tb³⁺, Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺, Er³⁺, Yb³⁺ and X: OH^-/F^-) with a tritopic carboxylate-based organic linker. This linker serves as a 3-c and 4-c organic node resulting in the formation of a unique, trinodal (3,4,14)-c framework. RE-frt-MOF-1 are stable in air and alkaline aqueous solutions and show an intriguingly continuous, reversible breathing behavior, between a wide and a narrow-pore phase, upon guest removal. Crystallinity is retained during breathing, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction shed light into the associated structural transformation. Vapor sorption studies performed on Y-frt-MOF-1 revealed a high affinity for non-polar vapors such as n-hexane, cyclohexane, and benzene, displaying type I isotherms with high uptake at low relative pressures (<10^-3 p/p₀), associated with the hydrophobic nature of the 1D channels and also with their rhombic shape. In contrast, polar vapors such as acetonitrile and ethanol show type V isotherms due to favorable vapor-vapor interactions. Notably these vapors, except cyclohexane, trigger the transition from the narrow to the wide pore phase, accompanied by a remarkable increase in uptake, reaching 70.6, 109, 100.4, and 87.7% for n-hexane, benzene, acetonitrile, and ethanol, respectively.

Hexagonal Layer Manganese Metal-Organic Framework for Photocatalytic CO2 Cycloaddition Reaction

A novel manganese metal-organic framework (Mn-MOF) termed UAEU-50 assembled from a benzenedicarboxylate linker (BDC) and trinuclear manganese clusters was synthesized and fully characterized using different spectroscopic and analytic techniques (e.g., X-ray powder diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). UAEU-50 adopted a hexagonal layer structure and exhibited superior thermal stability and robust chemical stability. Photocatalytic activities of UAEU-50 were investigated using the cycloaddition of CO₂ to different epoxides, forming cyclic carbonates. Impressively, UAEU-50 can transform up to 90% photocatalytic CO₂ conversion to cyclic carbonates in the visible-light region at ambient conditions.

A Mixed Heterobimetallic Y/Eu-MOF for the Cyanosilylation and Hydroboration of Carbonyls

Herein, to the best of our knowledge, the first heterobimetallic Y/Eu porous metal–organic framework (MOF), based on 3-amino-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (H2L) ligand, with the following formulae {[Y3.5Eu1.5L6(OH)3(H2O)3]·12DMF}n (in advance, namely Y/Eu-MOF), is described. The three-dimensional structure has been synthesized by solvothermal routes and thoroughly characterized, by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, electronic microscopy, ICP-AES, electrophoretic mobility, and FTIR spectra. Intriguingly, the porous nature allows for coordinated solvent molecules displacement, yielding unsaturated metal centers, which can act as a Lewis acid catalyst. This novel supramolecular entity has been tested in cyanosilylation and hydroboration reactions on carbonyl substrates of a diverse nature, exhibiting an extraordinary activity.

Low-Temperature and Additive-Free Synthesis of Spherical MIL-101(Cr) with Enhanced Dye Adsorption Performance

The chromium-benzenedicarboxylate metal–organic framework (MOF), MIL-101(Cr), is one of the most well-investigated and widely used prototypical MOFs. Regarding its synthesis, the use of a toxic modulator (usually HF) and high reaction temperature (220 °C) are the main factors hindering its further expansion of production and utilization. In fact, high quality MIL-101(Cr) crystals can be prepared at a much lower temperature (160 °C) with spherical morphology via an additive-free approach. Compared to traditional octahedral MIL-101(Cr), the spherical MIL-101(Cr) possesses higher adsorption performance toward dye molecules, including methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RB). The results suggest that toxic additives and high reaction temperatures are not essential in the synthesis of MIL-101(Cr), and the fabrication of spherical MIL-101(Cr) may offer a facile and effective pathway for the large-scale industrial application of MIL-101(Cr).

Recent Advances in the Catalytic Applications of Lanthanide-Oxo Clusters

Lanthanide-oxo/hydroxo clusters (LOCs) in this mini-review refer to polynuclear complexes featuring a polyhedral metal-oxo/hydroxo cluster core of lanthanide ions exclusively or with coexisting 3d metal ions. We summarize herein the recent works using this unique family of cluster complexes for catalysis; this aspect of research stands in stark contrast to their extensively studied synthetic and structural chemistry as well as the much-researched magnetic properties. Following a brief introduction of the synthetic strategies for these clusters, pertinent results from available literature reports are surveyed and discussed according to the types of catalyzed reactions. Particular attention was paid to the selection of a cluster catalyst for a specific type of reactions as well as the corresponding reaction mechanism. To the end, the advantages and challenges in utilizing LOCs as multifunctional catalysts are summarized, and possible future research directions are proposed.

Resistive Memory Devices Based on Reticular Materials for Electrical Information Storage

Recently, reticular materials, such as metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks, have been proposed as an active insulating layer in resistive switching memory systems through their chemically tunable porous structure. A resistive random access memory (RRAM) cell, a digital memristor, is one of the most outstanding emergent memory devices that achieves high-density electrical information storage with variable electrical resistance states between two terminals. The overall design of the RRAM devices comprises an insulating layer sandwiched between two metal electrodes (metal/insulator/metal). RRAM devices with fast switching speeds and enhanced storage density have the potential to be manufactured with excellent scalability owing to their relatively simple device architecture. In this review, recent progress on the development of reticular material-based RRAM devices and the study of their operational mechanisms are reviewed, and new challenges and future perspectives related to reticular material-based RRAM are discussed.

Capture and Reuse of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) for a Plastics Circular Economy: A Review

Plastic production has been increasing at enormous rates. Particularly, the socioenvironmental problems resulting from the linear economy model have been widely discussed, especially regarding plastic pieces intended for single use and disposed improperly in the environment. Nonetheless, greenhouse gas emissions caused by inappropriate disposal or recycling and by the many production stages have not been discussed thoroughly. Regarding the manufacturing processes, carbon dioxide is produced mainly through heating of process streams and intrinsic chemical transformations, explaining why first-generation petrochemical industries are among the top five most greenhouse gas (GHG)-polluting businesses. Consequently, the plastics market must pursue full integration with the circular economy approach, promoting the simultaneous recycling of plastic wastes and sequestration and reuse of CO2 through carbon capture and utilization (CCU) strategies, which can be employed for the manufacture of olefins (among other process streams) and reduction of fossil-fuel demands and environmental impacts. Considering the previous remarks, the present manuscript’s purpose is to provide a review regarding CO2 emissions, capture, and utilization in the plastics industry. A detailed bibliometric review of both the scientific and the patent literature available is presented, including the description of key players and critical discussions and suggestions about the main technologies. As shown throughout the text, the number of documents has grown steadily, illustrating the increasing importance of CCU strategies in the field of plastics manufacture.

Influence of Substituents in Terephthalate Linker on the Structure of MOFs Obtained from Presynthesized Heterometallic Complex

The synthesis of new porous materials with desired properties is a challenging task. It becomes especially difficult if you need to combine several metals in one framework to obtain a heterometallic node. The use of presynthesized complexes for obtaining of new heterometallic metal–organic frameworks could be essential to solve the problem of tailored synthesis. In our study we use presynthesized heterometallic pivalate complex [Li2Zn2(piv)6(py)2] to obtain new MOFs with heterometallic core as a node of the framework. We are managed to obtain four new heterometallic MOFs: [H2N(CH3)2]2[Li2Zn2(bdc)4]·CH3CN·DMF (1), [Li2Zn2(H2Br2-bdc)(Br2-bdc)3]·2DMF (2), [H2N(CH3)2][LiZn2(ndc)3]·CH3CN (3) and [{Li2Zn2(dmf)(py)2}{LiZn(dmf)2}2 (NO2-bdc)6]·5DMF (4). Moreover three of them contain starting tetranuclear core {Li2Zn2} and saves its geometry. We also demonstrate the influence of substituent in terephthalate ring on preservation of tetranuclear core. For compound 1 it was shown that luminescence of the framework could be quenched when nitrobenzene is included in the pores.

Active metal single-sites based on metal–organic frameworks: construction and chemical prospects
