Transitioning metal-organic frameworks from the laboratory to market through applied research

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have captivated researchers for over 25 years, yet few have successfully transitioned to commercial markets. This Perspective elucidates the progress, challenges and opportunities in moving MOFs to market, focusing on applied research. The five applied research steps that enable technology development and demonstration are reviewed: synthesis, forming, processing (washing and activation), prototyping and compliance. Furthermore, the importance of a comprehensive techno-economic analysis incorporating a complete picture of costs and revenues is discussed. Readers can use the understanding of applied research presented herein to tackle their MOF commercialization challenges.

Recent Trends and Advances in Porous Metal-Organic Framework Nanostructures for the Electrochemical and Optical Sensing of Heavy Metals in Water

With the expansion and advancement in agricultural and chemical industries, various toxic heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, zinc, copper, arsenic etc. are continuously released into the environment. Intake of sources contaminated with such toxic metals leads to various health issues. Keeping the serious effects of these toxic metal ions in view, various organic-inorganic nanomaterials based sensors have been exploited for their detection via optical, electrochemical and colorimetric approaches. Since a chemical sensor works on the principle of interaction between the sensing layer and the analytes, a sensor material with large surface area is required to enable the largest possible interaction with the target molecules and hence the sensitivity of the chemical sensor. However, commonly employed materials such as metal oxides and conducting polymers tend to feature relatively low surface areas, and hence resulting in low sensitivity of the sensor. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) nanostructures are another category of organic-inorganic materials endowed with large surface area, ultra-high and tunable porosity, post-synthesis modification features, readily available active sites, catalytic activity, and chemical/thermal stability. These properties provide high sensitivity to the MOF based sensors due to the adsorption of large number of target analytes. The current review article focuses on MOFs based optical and electrochemical sensors for the detection of heavy metals.

Recent Advances on the Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Biosensing Methods for Cancer Biomarkers Detection

Sensitive and selective detection of cancer biomarkers is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, one of the most dangerous diseases in the world. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of hybrid porous materials fabricated through the assembly of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, have attracted increasing attention in the sensing of cancer biomarkers, due to the advantages of adjustable size, high porosity, large surface area and ease of modification. MOFs have been utilized to not only fabricate active sensing interfaces but also arouse a variety of measurable signals. Several representative analytical technologies have been applied in MOF-based biosensing strategies to ensure high detection sensitivity toward cancer biomarkers, such as fluorescence, electrochemistry, electrochemiluminescence, photochemistry and colorimetric methods. In this review, we summarized recent advances on MOFs-based biosensing strategies for the detection of cancer biomarkers in recent three years based on the categories of metal nodes, and aimed to provide valuable references for the development of innovative biosensing platform for the purpose of clinical diagnosis.

Immobilization of europium and terbium ions with tunable ratios on a dispersible two-dimensional metal-organic framework for ratiometric photoluminescence detection of D2O

A two-dimensional zirconium-based metal-organic framework (2D Zr-MOF), ZrBTB (BTB = 1,3,5-tri(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene), is used as a platform to simultaneously immobilize terbium ions and europium ions with tunable ratios on its hexa-zirconium nodes by a post-synthetic modification. The crystallinity, morphology, porosity and photoluminescence (PL) properties of the obtained 2D Zr-MOFs with various europium-to-terbium ratios are investigated. With the energy transfer from the excited BTB linker to the installed terbium ions and the energy transfer from terbium ions to europium ions, a low loading of immobilized europium ions and a high loading of surrounding terbium ions in the 2D Zr-MOF result in the optimal PL emission intensities of europium; this phenomenon is not observable for the physical mixture of both terbium-installed ZrBTB and europium-installed ZrBTB. The role of installed terbium ions as efficient mediators for the energy transfer from the excited BTB linker to the installed europium ion is confirmed by quantifying PL quantum yields. As a demonstration, these materials with modulable PL characteristics are applied for the ratiometric detection of D2O in water, with the use of the stable emission from the BTB linker as the reference. With the strong emission of immobilized europium ions and the good dispersity in aqueous solutions, the optimal bimetal-installed ZrBTB, Eu-Tb-ZrBTB(1 : 10), can achieve the sensing performance outperforming those of the terbium-installed ZrBTB, europium-installed ZrBTB and the physical mixture of both.

A Novel Multi-Effect Photosensitizer for Tumor Destruction via Multimodal Imaging Guided Synergistic Cancer Phototherapy

Background

How to ingeniously design multi-effect photosensitizers (PSs), including multimodal imaging and multi-channel therapy, is of great significance for highly spatiotemporal controllable precise phototherapy of malignant tumors.

Methods

Herein, a novel multifunctional zinc(II) phthalocyanine-based planar micromolecule amphiphile (ZnPc 1) was successfully designed and synthesized, in which N atom with photoinduced electron transfer effect was introduced to enhance the near-infrared absorbance and nonradiative heat generation. After simple self-assembling into nanoparticles (NPs), ZnPc 1 NPs would exhibit enhanced multimodal imaging properties including fluorescence (FL) imaging (FLI) /photoacoustic (PA) imaging (PAI) /infrared (IR) thermal imaging, which was further used to guide the combined photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT).

Results

It was that under the self-guidance of the multimodal imaging, ZnPc 1 NPs could precisely pinpoint the tumor from the vertical and horizontal boundaries achieving highly efficient and accurate treatment of cancer.

Conclusion

Accordingly, the integration of FL/PA/IR multimodal imaging and PDT/PTT synergistic therapy pathway into one ZnPc 1 could provide a blueprint for the next generation of phototherapy, which offered a new paradigm for the integration of diagnosis and treatment in tumor and a promising prospect for precise cancer therapy.

Controlled Localized Metal-Organic Framework Synthesis on Anion Exchange Membranes

Metal-organic framework (MOF) films can be used in various applications. In this work, we propose a method that can be used to synthesize MOF films localized on a single side of an anion exchange membrane, preventing the transport of the metal precursor via Donnan exclusion. This is advantageous compared to the related contra-diffusion method that results in the growth of a MOF film on both sides of the support, differing in quality on both sides. Our proposed method has the advantage that the synthesis conditions can potentially be tuned to create the optimal conditions for crystal growth on a single side. The localized growth of the MOF is governed by Donnan exclusion of the anion exchange membrane, preventing metal ions from passing to the other compartment, and this leads to a local control of the precursor stoichiometry. In this work, we show that our method can localize the growth of both Cu-BTC and ZIF-8 in water and in methanol, respectively, highlighting that this method can used for preparing a variety of MOF films with varying characteristics using soluble precursors at room temperature.

Two-dimensional metal-organic framework for post-synthetic immobilization of graphene quantum dots for photoluminescent sensing

Immobilization of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) on a solid support is crucial to prevent GQDs from aggregation in the form of solid powder and facilitate the separation and recycling of GQDs after use. Herein, spatially dispersed GQDs are post-synthetically coordinated within a two-dimensional (2D) and water-stable zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF). Unlike pristine GQDs, the obtained GQDs immobilized on 2D MOF sheets show photoluminescence in both suspension and dry powder. Chemical and photoluminescent stabilities of MOF-immobilized GQDs in water are investigated, and the use of immobilized GQDs in the photoluminescent detection of copper ions is demonstrated. Findings here shed the light on the use of 2D MOFs as a platform to further immobilize GQDs with various sizes and distinct chemical functionalities for a range of applications.

Gas adsorption and framework flexibility of CALF-20 explored via experiments and simulations

In 2021, Svante, in collaboration with BASF, reported successful scale up of CALF-20 production, a stable MOF with high capacity for post-combustion CO2 capture which exhibits remarkable stability towards water. CALF-20's success story in the MOF commercialisation space provides new thinking about appropriate structural and adsorptive metrics important for CO2 capture. Here, we combine atomistic-level simulations with experiments to study adsorptive properties of CALF-20 and shed light on its flexible crystal structure. We compare measured and predicted CO2 and water adsorption isotherms and explain the role of water-framework interactions and hydrogen bonding networks in CALF-20's hydrophobic behaviour. Furthermore, regular and enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations are performed with both density-functional theory (DFT) and machine learning potentials (MLPs) trained to DFT energies and forces. From these simulations, the effects of adsorption-induced flexibility in CALF-20 are uncovered. We envisage this work would encourage development of other MOF materials useful for CO2 capture applications in humid conditions.

Catalytic Oxidation of Chlorobenzene over Amorphous Manganese-Chromium Catalysts Supported by UiO-66-Derived ZrOx

The development of efficient catalysts with longevity to remove chlorobenzene is challenging due to Cl poisoning. Herein, a series of Mn-Cr/ZrOx catalysts supported by Zr-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66)-derived ZrOx was prepared and investigated for chlorobenzene (CB) catalytic oxidation. MnCr/ZrOx-M prepared via a wet impregnation method presented an amorphous structure, indicating the homogeneous dispersion of Cr and Mn, which improved acid and redox properties. 40Mn7Cr3/ZrOx-M exhibited the best catalytic activity for chlorobenzene oxidation with T90 of 293 °C, which is mainly due to the strong interaction between manganese and chromium promoted by the large specific surface area of the ZrOx support. Furthermore, 40Mn7Cr3/ZrOx-M presented excellent stability for chlorobenzene oxidation.

Recent Development of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification

Water contamination is an increasing concern to mankind because of the increasing amount of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. To purify the polluted water, various techniques have been used to remove hazardous components. Unfortunately, traditional cleanup techniques with a low uptake capacity are unable to achieve water purification. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently shown potential in effective water pollutant isolation in terms of selectivity and adsorption capacity over traditional porous materials. The high surface area and versatile functionality of MOFs allow for the development of new adsorbents. The development of MOFs in a range of water treatments in the recent five years will be highlighted in this review, along with assessments of the adsorption performance relevant to the particular task. Moreover, the outlook on future opportunities for water purification using MOFs is also provided.

Advanced Hybrid materials in electrochemical sensors: Combining MOFs and conducting polymers for environmental monitoring

The integration of conducting polymers (CPs) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has arisen as a dynamic and innovative approach to overcome some intrinsic limitations of both materials, representing a transformative method to address the pressing need for high-performance environmental monitoring tools. MOFs, with their intricate structures and versatile functional groups, provide tuneable porosity and an extensive surface area, facilitating the selective adsorption of target analytes. Conversely, CPs, characterized by their exceptional electrical conductivity and redox properties, serve as proficient signal transducers. By combining these two materials, a novel class of hybrid materials emerges, capitalizing on the unique attributes of both components. These MOF/CP hybrids exhibit heightened sensitivity, selectivity, and adaptability, making them primordial in detecting and quantifying environmental contaminants. This review examines the synergy between MOFs and CPs, highlighting recent advancements, challenges, and prospects, thus offering a promising solution for developing advanced functional materials with tailored properties and multifunctionality to be applied in electrochemical sensors for environmental monitoring.

2D MOF based-heterostructure with hierarchical architecture as antibacterial wound dressing

Bacterial infections pose a huge threat to human health due to the inevitable emergency of drug resistance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) consisting of metal ions and organic linkers, as emerging efficient antibacterial material, have the merits of structural flexibility and adjustable physicochemical property. With assistance of photosensitive agents as organic linkers, MOFs have great potential in antibacterial application through photocatalytic therapy by the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the limited light use efficiency and short lifespan of ROS are two obstacles for their applications. Inspired by the semiconductor heterostructure in photocatalysis, we rationally design and precisely synthesize MOFs based heterostructures, in which the TiO2 nanoclusters are filled into the pores of Cu-TCPP nanosheets (i.e. TiO2 NCs@Cu-TCPP HSs). And the composite materials possess three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architectures, which have advantages of large surface area, excellent light-absorbing ability and photocatalytic efficiency. Significantly, this novel material displays >99.99 % antibacterial efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus within 30 min and preserves the excellent antibacterial ability during reusing three times, which is superior to recently reported photocatalystic-based antibacterial materials. Our study provides new insights into the energy band engineering for enhanced antibacterial performance, paving a way for designing advanced clinical wound dressings.

Research Progress on Hygroscopic Agents for Atmospheric Water Harvesting Systems

Adsorptive atmospheric water harvesting systems (AWHs) represent an innovative approach to collecting freshwater resources from the atmosphere, with a hygroscopic agent at their core. This method has garnered significant attention due to its broad applicability, strong recycling capacity, and sustainability. It is being positioned as a key technology to address global freshwater scarcity. The core agent's hygroscopic properties play a crucial role in determining the performance of the AWHs. This article provides a comprehensive review of the latest advancements in hygroscopic agents, including their adsorption mechanisms and classifications. This study of hygroscopic agents analyzes the performance and characteristics of relevant porous material composite polymer composites and plant composites. It also evaluates the design and preparation of these materials. Aiming at the problems of low moisture adsorption and desorption difficulty of the hygroscopic agent, the factors affecting the water vapor adsorption performance and the method of enhancing the hygroscopic performance of the material are summarized and put forward. For the effect of hygroscopic agents on the volume of water catchment devices, the difference in density before and after hygroscopicity is proposed as part of the evaluation criteria. Moisture absorption per unit volume is added as a performance evaluation criterion to assess the effect of hygroscopic agents on the volume of water collection equipment. The article identifies areas that require further research and development for moisture absorbers, exploring their potential applications in other fields and anticipating the future development direction and opportunities of moisture-absorbing materials. The goal is to promote the early realization of adsorptive atmospheric water harvesting technology for large-scale industrial applications.

A Two-dimensional Metal-Organic Framework as Promising Cathode for Advanced Lithium Storage

Anthraquinone electrode materials are promising candidates for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the abundance of anthraquinone and the high theoretical capacity, and good reversibility of the anthraquinone electrodes. However, the active anthraquinone materials are soluble in organic electrolytes, resulting in a sharp decay of capacity during the charge and discharge processes. Herein, we report on a two-dimensional calcium anthraquinone 2,3-dicarboxy metal-organic framework (2D CaAQDC MOF) fabricated using a simple hydrothermal method. The 2D CaAQDC MOF not only effectively inhibits the dissolution of active electrode substances into the electrolyte, but also promotes the diffusion of lithium ion into the pores of the MOF. When used as a cathode for the LIBs, the resulting CaAQDC electrode delivers a high specific capacity of ~100 mAh g-1 at a current density of 50 mA g-1 after 200 cycles, demonstrating its good cycle stability. Even at a high current density of 200 mA g-1 , the CaAQDC electrode exhibits a specific capacity of ~60 mAh g-1 . The fabricated 2D coordination polymers effectively restrains the dissolution of anthraquinone into the organic electrolyte and enhances the structural stability, which greatly improves the electrochemical performance of anthraquinone. These research results offer a rational molecular design strategy to address the dissolution of this and other active organic electrode materials.

Efficient C2H6/C2H4 adsorption separation by a microporous heterometal-organic framework

Purification of ethylene (C2H4) is an essential and energy-intensive process in the petrochemical industry. Adsorption separation using ethane (C2H6)-selective porous adsorbents is a highly efficient and straightforward method for obtaining polymer-grade C2H4 from a binary C2H6/C2H4 mixture. However, the design and construction of C2H6-selective adsorbents are very challenging tasks. Herein, we demonstrate a microporous heterometal-organic framework, CuIn(ina)4, can preferentially enrich C2H6 than C2H4. Experimental results revealed that CuIn(ina)4 exhibited remarkable separation performance for the C2H6/C2H4 mixture with a high C2H6 loading capacity (3.3 mmol/g), high IAST selectivity (2.3) and separation potential (1578 mmol/L for equimolar C2H6/C2H4 mixture) under ambient conditions. The effectiveness of CuIn(ina)4 for C2H6/C2H4 adsorption separation was confirmed by theoretical calculations and breakthrough experiments.

The green synthesis and applications of biological metal-organic frameworks for targeted drug delivery and tumor treatments

Biological metal-organic frameworks (bio-MOFs) constitute a growing subclass of MOFs composed of metals and bio-ligands derived from biology, such as nucleobases, peptides, saccharides, and amino acids. Bio-ligands are more abundant than other traditional organic ligands, providing multiple coordination sites for MOFs. However, bio-MOFs are typically prepared using hazardous or harmful solvents or reagents, as well as laborious processes that do not conform to environmentally friendly standards. To improve biocompatibility and biosafety, eco-friendly synthesis and functionalization techniques should be employed with mild conditions and safer materials, aiming to reduce or avoid the use of toxic and hazardous chemical agents. Recently, bio-MOF applications have gained importance in some research areas, including imaging, tumor therapy, and targeted drug delivery, owing to their flexibility, low steric hindrances, low toxicity, remarkable biocompatibility, surface property refining, and degradability. This has led to an exponential increase in research on these materials. This paper provides a comprehensive review of updated strategies for the synthesis of environmentally friendly bio-MOFs, as well as an examination of the current progress and accomplishments in green-synthesized bio-MOFs for drug delivery aims and tumor treatments. In conclusion, we consider the challenges of applying bio-MOFs for biomedical applications and clarify the possible research orientation that can lead to highly efficient therapeutic outcomes.

Kinetic Trapping of Photoluminescent Frameworks During High-Concentration Synthesis of Non-Emissive Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous, crystalline materials constructed from organic linkers and inorganic nodes with potential utility in gas separations, drug delivery, sensing, and catalysis. Small variations in MOF synthesis conditions can lead to a range of accessible frameworks with divergent chemical or photophysical properties. New methods to controllably access phases with tailored properties would broaden the scope of MOFs that can be reliably prepared for specific applications. Herein, we demonstrate that simply increasing the reaction concentration during the solvothermal synthesis of M2(dobdc) (M = Mg, Mn, Ni; dobdc4- = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) MOFs unexpectedly leads to trapping of a new framework termed CORN-MOF-1 (CORN = Cornell University) instead. In-depth spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational studies support that CORN-MOF-1 has a similar structure to M2(dobdc) but with partially protonated linkers and charge-balancing or coordinated formate groups in the pores. The resultant variation in linker spacings causes CORN-MOF-1 (Mg) to be strongly photoluminescent in the solid state, whereas H4dobdc and Mg2(dobdc) are weakly emissive due to excimer formation. In-depth photophysical studies suggest that CORN-MOF-1 (Mg) is the first MOF based on the H2dobdc2- linker that likely does not emit via an excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) pathway. In addition, CORN-MOF-1 variants can be converted into high-quality samples of the thermodynamic M2(dobdc) phases by heating in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Overall, our findings support that high-concentration synthesis provides a straightforward method to identify new MOFs with properties distinct from known materials and to produce highly porous samples of MOFs, paving the way for the discovery and gram-scale synthesis of framework materials.

An Overview of Metal-organic Framework Based Electrocatalysts: Design and Synthesis for Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution, Oxygen Evolution, and Carbon Dioxide Reduction Reactions

Due to the increasing global energy demands, scarce fossil fuel supplies, and environmental issues, the pursued goals of energy technologies are being sustainable, more efficient, accessible, and produce near zero greenhouse gas emissions. Electrochemical water splitting is considered as a highly viable and eco-friendly energy technology. Further, electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2 ) reduction reaction (CO2 RR) is a cleaner strategy for CO2 utilization and conversion to stable energy (fuels). One of the critical issues in these cleaner technologies is the development of efficient and economical electrocatalyst. Among various materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are becoming increasingly popular because of their structural tunability, such as pre- and post- synthetic modifications, flexibility in ligand design and its functional groups, and incorporation of different metal nodes, that allows for the design of suitable MOFs with desired quality required for each process. In this review, the design of MOF was discussed for specific process together with different synthetic methods and their effects on the MOF properties. The MOFs as electrocatalysts were highlighted with their performances from the aspects of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical CO2 RR. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

Plastic Avalanches in Metal-Organic Framework Crystals Due to the Dynamic Phase Mixing

The compressive properties of metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals are not only crucial for their densification process but also key in determining their performance in many applications. We herein investigated the mechanical responses of a classic crystalline MOF, HKUST-1, using in situ compression tests. A serrated flow accompanied by the unique strain avalanches was found in individual and contacting crystals before their final flattening or fracture with splitting cracks. The plastic flow with serrations is ascribed to the dynamic phase mixing due to the progressive and irreversible local phase transition in HKUST-1 crystals, as revealed by molecular dynamics and finite element simulations. Such pressure-induced phase coexistence in HKUST-1 crystals also induces a significant loading-history dependence of their Young's modulus. The observation of plastic avalanches in HKUST-1 crystals here not only expands our current understanding of the plasticity of MOF crystals but also unveils a novel mechanism for the avalanches and plastic flow in crystal plasticity.

Self-supporting, hierarchically hollow structured NiFe-PBA electrocatalyst for efficient alkaline seawater oxidation

Seawater electrolysis, taking advantage of the huge seawater resource, holds great promise for sustainable hydrogen generation. Compared to conventional water electrolysis, seawater electrolysis is more challenging because of the more complex and corrosive electrolyte and competitive side reactions, which necessitates the development of highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts. In this study, a self-supporting, highly porous NiFe-PBA (Prussian-blue-analogue) electrocatalyst with a hierarchically hollow nanostructure is introduced, which exhibits impressive catalytic performance towards the oxygen evolution in alkaline seawater electrolytes. In NiFe-PBA, the synergistic interaction between Ni and Fe improves intrinsic conductivity for efficient electron transfer, enhances chemical stability in seawater, and boosts overall electrocatalytic activity. The direct use of self-supporting NiFe-PBA as an electrocatalyst avoids the energy-intensive and tedious pyrolysis procedure during the preparation process while making use of the tailored morphological, structural, and compositional benefits of PBA-based materials. By combining the NiFe-PBA catalyst with the NiMoN cathode, the constructed two-electrode electrolyzer achieved a high current density of 500 mA cm-2 at a low cell voltage of 1.782 V for overall electrolysis of alkaline seawater, demonstrating excellent durability for 100 hours. Our findings have important implications for the hydrogen economy and sustainable development through the development of robust and efficient PBA-based electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis.

Nanoarchitectonics of Bimetallic MOF@Lab-Grade Flexible Filter Papers: An Approach Towards Real-Time Water Decontamination and Circular Economy

This study presents a novel approach to decontaminate ferrocyanide-contaminated wastewater. The work effectively demonstrates the use of bimetallic Mo/Zr-UiO-66 as a super-adsorbent for rapid sequestration of Prussian blue, a frequently found iron complex in cyanide-contaminated soils/groundwater. The exceptional performance of Mo/Zr-UiO-66 is attributed to the insertion of secondary metallic sites, which deliver synergistic effects, benefiting the inherent qualities of the framework. Moreover, to extend the industrial applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in real-world scenarios, an approach is delivered to structure the nanocrystalline powders into MOF-based macrostructures. The work demonstrates an interfacial process to develop continuous MOF nanostructures on ordinary laboratory-grade filter papers. The novelty of the work lies in the development of robust free-standing filtration materials to purify PB dye-contaminated water. Additionally, the work embraces a circular economy concept to address problems related to resource scarcity, excessive waste production, and maintenance of economic benefits. Consequently, the PB dye-loaded adsorbent waste is re-employed for the adsorption of heavy metals (Pb2+ and Cd2+ ). Simultaneously, the study aims to address the problems related to the real-time handling of powdered adsorbents, and the generation of ecologically harmful secondary waste, thereby, progressing toward a more sustainable system.

Multifunctional 3D-printed scaffolds eradiate orthotopic osteosarcoma and promote osteogenesis via microwave thermo-chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy

Tumor recurrence and a lack of bone-tissue integration are two critical concerns in the surgical treatment of osteosarcoma. Thus, an advanced multifunctional therapeutic platform capable of simultaneously eliminating residual tumor cells and promoting bone regeneration is urgently needed for efficient osteosarcoma treatment. Herein, to thoroughly eliminate tumors and simultaneously promote bone regeneration, an intelligent multifunctional therapeutic scaffold has been engineered by integrating microwave-responsive zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) nanomaterials loaded with a chemotherapeutic drug and an immune checkpoint inhibitor onto 3D-printed titanium scaffolds. The constructed scaffold features distinct microwave-thermal sensitization and tumor microenvironment-responsive characteristics, which can induce tumor immunogenic death by microwave hyperthermia and chemotherapy. Orthotopic implantation of the nanocomposite scaffold results in an enhanced immune response against osteosarcoma that may effectively inhibit tumor recurrence through synergistic immunotherapy. During long-term implantation, the zinc ions released from the degradation of ZIF-8 can induce the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells. The porous structure and mechanical properties of the 3D-printed titanium scaffolds provide a structural microenvironment for bone regeneration. This study provides a paradigm for the design of multifunctional microwave-responsive composite scaffolds for use as a therapy for osteosarcoma, which could lead to improved strategies for the treatment of the disease.

Anisotropic flexibility and rigidification in a TPE-based Zr-MOFs with scu topology

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based ligands are appealing for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with new functions and responsiveness. Here, we report a non-interpenetrated TPE-based scu Zr-MOF with anisotropic flexibility, that is, Zr-TCPE (H4TCPE = 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene), remaining two anisotropic pockets. The framework flexibility is further anisotropically rigidified by installing linkers individually at specific pockets. By individually installing dicarboxylic acid L1 or L2 at pocket A or B, the framework flexibility along the b-axis or c-axis is rigidified, and the intermolecular or intramolecular motions of organic ligands are restricted, respectively. Synergistically, with dual linker installation, the flexibility is completely rigidified with the restriction of ligand motion, resulting in MOFs with enhanced stability and improved separation ability. Furthermore, in situ observation of the flipping of the phenyl ring and its rigidification process is made by 2H solid-state NMR. The anisotropic rigidification of flexibility in scu Zr-MOFs guides the directional control of ligand motion for designing stimuli-responsive emitting or efficient separation materials.

Microwave-activated Cu-doped zirconium metal-organic framework for a highly effective combination of microwave dynamic and thermal therapy

Percutaneous microwave ablation (PMA) is a thermoablative method used as a minimally invasive treatment for liver cancer. However, the application of PMA is limited by its insufficient ROS generation efficiency and thermal effects. Herein, a new microwave-activated Cu-doped zirconium metal-organic framework (MOF) (CuZr MOF) used for enhanced PMA has a significantly improved microwave sensitizing effect. Owing to the strong inelastic collisions between ions confined in numerous micropores, CuZr MOF has strong microwave sensitivity and high thermal conversion efficiency, which can significantly improve microwave thermal therapy (MTT). Moreover, because of the existence of Cu2+ ions, a further benefit of CuZr MOF is their Fenton-like activity, in particular, microwaves used as an excitation source for microwave dynamic therapy (MDT) can improve the Fenton-like reaction to maximize the synergistic effectiveness of cancer therapy. Importantly, CuZr MOF can inhibit the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) by producing abundant ROS to enhance tumor destruction. Mechanistically, we found that CuZr MOF + MW treatment modulates ferroptosis-mediated tumor cell death by targeting the HMOX1/GPX4 axis. In summary, this study develops a novel CuZr MOF microwave sensitizer with great potential for synergistic treatment of liver cancer by MTT and MDT.

Near-Infrared Light-Mediated Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Frameworks for Synergistic Antibacterial and Anti-Biofilm Therapies

Bacterial infections pose a significant threat to global public health; therefore, the development of novel therapeutics is urgently needed. Herein, a controllable antibacterial nanoplatform utilizing cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) as a template to synthesize ultrafine silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in their porous structure is constructed. Subsequently, polydopamine (PDA) is encapsulated on the CD-MOFs' surface via dopamine polymerization to enhance the water stability and enable hyperthermia capacity. The resulting Ag@MOF@PDA generates localized hyperthermia and gradually releases Ag+ to achieve long-term photothermal-chemical bactericidal capability. The release rate of Ag+ can be accelerated by NIR-mediated heating in a controllable manner, quickly reaching the effective concentration and reducing the frequency of medication to avoid potential toxicity. In vitro experiments demonstrate that the combined antibacterial strategy can not only effectively kill both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, but also directly eradicate mature biofilms. In vivo results confirm that both bacterial- and biofilm-infected wounds treated with a combination of Ag@MOF@PDA and laser exhibit satisfactory recovery with minimal toxicity, displaying a superior therapeutic effect compared to other groups. Together, the results warrant that the Ag@MOF@PDA realizes synergistic antibacterial capacity and controllable release of Ag+ to combat bacterial and biofilm infections, providing a potential antibiotic-free alternative in the "post-antibiotic era."

Advances in aptamers, and application of mycotoxins detection: A review

Mycotoxin contamination in food products can easily cause serious health hazards and economic losses to human beings. How to accurately detect and effectively control mycotoxin contamination has become a global concern. Mycotoxins conventional detection techniques e.g; ELISA, HPLC, have limitations like, low sensitivity, high cost and time-consuming. Aptamer-based biosensing technology has the advantages of high sensitivity, high specificity, wide linear range, high feasibility, and non-destructiveness, which overcomes the shortcomings of conventional analysis techniques. This review summarizes the sequences of mycotoxin aptamers that have been reported so far. Based on the application of four classic POST-SELEX strategies, it also discusses the bioinformatics-assisted POST-SELEX technology in obtaining optimal aptamers. Furthermore, trends in the study of aptamer sequences and their binding mechanisms to targets is also discussed. The latest examples of aptasensor detection of mycotoxins are classified and summarized in detail. Newly developed dual-signal detection, dual-channel detection, multi-target detection and some types of single-signal detection combined with unique strategies or novel materials in recent years are focused. Finally, the challenges and prospects of aptamer sensors in the detection of mycotoxins are discussed. The development of aptamer biosensing technology provides a new approach with multiple advantages for on-site detection of mycotoxins. Although aptamer biosensing shows great development potential, still some challenges and difficulties are there in practical applications. Future research need high focus on the practical applications of aptasensors and the development of convenient and highly automated aptamers. This may lead to the transition of aptamer biosensing technology from laboratory to commercialization.

Homochiral organic molecular cage RCC3-R-modified silica as a new multimodal and multifunctional stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography

In this work, homochiral reduced imine cage was covalently bonded to the surface of the silica to prepare a novel high-performance liquid chromatography stationary phase, which was applied for the multiple separation modes such as normal phase, reversed-phase, ion exchange, and hydrophilic interaction chromatography. The successful preparation of the homochiral reduced imine cage bonded silica stationary phase was confirmed by performing a series of methods including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. From the extracted results of the chiral resolution in normal phase and reversed-phase modes, it was demonstrated that seven chiral compounds were successfully separated, among which the resolution of 1-phenylethanol reached the value of 3.97. Moreover, the multifunctional chromatographic performance of the new molecular cage stationary phase was systematically investigated in the modes of reversed-phase, ion exchange, and hydrophilic interaction chromatography for the separation and analysis of a total of 59 compounds in eight classes. This work demonstrated that the homochiral reduced imine cage not only achieved multiseparation modes and multiseparation functions performance with high stability, but also expanded the application of the organic molecular cage in the field of liquid chromatography.

MOFganic Chemistry: Challenges and Opportunities for Metal-Organic Frameworks in Synthetic Organic Chemistry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous, crystalline solids constructed from organic linkers and inorganic nodes that have been widely studied for applications in gas storage, chemical separations, and drug delivery. Owing to their highly modular structures and tunable pore environments, we propose that MOFs have significant untapped potential as catalysts and reagents relevant to the synthesis of next-generation therapeutics. Herein, we outline the properties of MOFs that make them promising for applications in synthetic organic chemistry, including new reactivity and selectivity, enhanced robustness, and user-friendly preparation. In addition, we outline the challenges facing the field and propose new directions to maximize the utility of MOFs for drug synthesis. This perspective aims to bring together the organic and MOF communities to develop new heterogeneous platforms capable of achieving synthetic transformations that cannot be replicated by homogeneous systems.

Photocatalytic-ozonation process in oxytetracycline degradation in aqueous solution: composite characterization, optimization, energy consumption, and by-products

In this research, we synthesized BiOI/NH₂-MIL125(Ti) via solvo-thermal method to investigation of oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation in photocatalytic-ozonation process. The results of the XRD, FESEM, EDAX, FTIR, UV-Vis, TEM, XPS, and BET analyzes indicated that the catalyst BiOI/MOF was synthesized with excellent quality. Design of experiment (DOE), ANOVA statistical analysis, interaction of parameters and predicated optimum condition was done based on CCD. The effect of catalyst dose (0.25-0.5 mg/l), pH (4-8), reaction time (30-60 min) and O₃ concentration (20-40 mN) at 10 mg/l of OTC on PCO/O₃ process was optimized. Based on P-value and F-value coefficients (0.0001, 450.3 respectively) the model of OTC (F-value = 2451.04) and (P-value = 0.0001) coefficients, the model of COD removal was quadratic model. Under optimum condition pH 8.0, CD = 0.34 mg/l, RT = 56 min and O₃ concentration = 28.7 mN, 96.2 and 77.2% of OTC and COD removed, respectively. The reduction of TOC was 64.2% in optimal conditions, which is less than the reduction of COD and OTC. The kinetics of reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetic (R² = 0.99). Synergistic effect coefficient was 1.31 that indicated ozonation, presence of catalyst and photolysis had a synergistic effect on OTC removal. The stability and reusability of the catalyst in six consecutive operating steps was acceptable and 7% efficiency decreased only. Cations (Mg²⁺, and Ca²⁺), SO₄^2- had no influence on performing the process, but other anions, organic scavengers, and nitrogen gas, had an inhibitory effect. Finally, the OTC degradation probably pathway includes direct and indirect oxidation that decarboxylation, hydroxylation, demethylation and were the main mechanism in OTC degradation.

Nanoparticles of Cerium-Doped Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Promote Soft Tissue Integration by Reprogramming the Metabolic Pathways of Macrophages

Soft tissue integration around the abutment of implants is the basis of long-term retention of implants. Macrophages are an important component involved in the repair of soft tissue due to their crucial role in improving the biological structure of connective tissues by regulating the fiber synthesis, adhesion, and contraction of gingival fibroblasts. Recent studies have illustrated that cerium-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Ce@ZIF-8) nanoparticles (NPs) can attenuate periodontitis via both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the effect of Ce@ZIF-8 NPs on soft tissue integration around the abutment is unknown. Herein, we first prepared Ce@ZIF-8 NPs by a one-pot synthesis. Then, we probed the regulatory effect of Ce@ZIF-8 NPs on macrophage polarization, and further experiments were performed to study the changes of fiber synthesis as well as adhesion and contraction of fibroblasts in the M2 macrophage environment stimulated by Ce@ZIF-8 NPs. Strikingly, Ce@ZIF-8 NPs can be internalized by M1 macrophages through macropinocytosis and caveolae-mediated endocytosis in addition to phagocytosis. By catalyzing hydrogen peroxide to produce oxygen, the mitochondrial function was remedied, while hypoxia inducible factor-1α was restrained. Then, macrophages were shifted from the M1 to M2 phenotype via this metabolic reprogramming pathway, provoking soft tissue integration. These results provide innovative insights into facilitating soft tissue integration around implants.

Microchemical environmental regulation of POMs@MIL-101(Cr) promote photocatalytic nitrogen to ammonia

The polyoxometalates (POMs) have been shown to be highly effective as reactive sites for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation reactions. However, the effect of POMs regulation on catalytic performance has not been reported yet. Herein, a series of composites (SiW₉M₃@MIL-101(Cr) (M = Fe, Co, V, Mo) and D-SiW₉Mo₃@MIL-101(Cr), D, Disordered) were obtained by regulating transition metal compositions and arrangement in the POMs. The ammonia production rate of SiW₉Mo₃@MIL-101(Cr) is much higher than that of other composites, reaching 185.67 μmol·h^-1·g^-1_cat in N₂ without sacrificial agents. The structural characterization of composites reveals that the increase of the electron cloud density of W atom in composites is the key to improve the photocatalytic performance. In this paper, the microchemical environment of POMs was regulated by transition metal doping method, thereby promoting the efficiency of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis for the composites, which provides new insights into the design of POM-based photocatalysts with high catalytic activity.

Nanoscale Zinc-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks Induce Neurotoxicity by Disturbing the Metabolism of Catecholamine Neurotransmitters

As a group of new nanomaterials, nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely applied in the biomedical field, exerting unknown risks to the human body, especially the central nervous system. Herein, the impacts of MOF-74-Zn nanoparticles on neurological behaviors and neurotransmitter metabolism are explored in both in vivo and in vitro assays modeled by C57BL/6 mice and PC12 cells, respectively. The mice exhibit increased negative-like behaviors, as demonstrated by the observed decrease in exploring behaviors and increase in despair-like behaviors in the open field test and forced swimming test after exposure to low doses of MOF-74-Zn nanoparticles. Disorders in the catecholamine neurotransmitter metabolism may be responsible for the MOF-74-Zn-induced abnormal behaviors. Part of the reason for this is the inhibition of neurotransmitter synthesis caused by restrained neurite extension. In addition, MOF-74-Zn promotes the translocation of more calcium into the cytoplasm, accelerating the release and uptake and finally resulting in an imbalance between synthesis and catabolism. Taken together, the results from this study indicate the human toxicity risks of nanoscale low-toxicity metal-based MOFs and provide valuable insight into the rational and safe use of MOF nanomaterials.

Advances of Electroactive Metal-Organic Frameworks

The preparation of electroactive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications of supercapacitors and batteries has received much attention and remarkable progress during the past few years. MOF-based materials including pristine MOFs, hybrid MOFs or MOF composites, and MOF derivatives are well designed by a combination of organic linkers (e.g., carboxylic acids, conjugated aromatic phenols/thiols, conjugated aromatic amines, and N-heterocyclic donors) and metal salts to construct predictable structures with appropriate properties. This review will focus on construction strategies of pristine MOFs and hybrid MOFs as anodes, cathodes, separators, and electrolytes in supercapacitors and batteries. Descriptions and discussions follow categories of electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), pseudocapacitors (PSCs), and hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) for supercapacitors. In contrast, Li-ion batteries (LIBs), Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs), Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), Sodium-sulfur batteries (SSBs), Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), Zinc-air batteries (ZABs), Aluminum-sulfur batteries (ASBs), and others (e.g., LiSe, NiZn, H⁺ , alkaline, organic, and redox flow batteries) are categorized for batteries.

Toward MOF@Polymer Core-Shell Particles: Design Principles and Potential Applications

ConspectusCompositing MOFs with polymers brings out the best properties of both worlds. The solubility and excellent mechanical properties of polymers endow the brittle, powdery MOFs with enhanced processability, thereby enriching their functions as solid sorbents, filters, membranes, catalysts, drug delivery vehicles, and so forth. While most MOF-polymer composites are random mixtures of two materials with little control over their fine structures, MOF@polymer core-shell particles have recently emerged as a new platform for precise composite design. The well-defined polymer coating can keep the rich pore characteristics of the MOF intact while furnishing the MOF with new properties such as improved dispersibility in various media, tunable surface energy, enhanced chemical stability, and regulated guest diffusion. Nevertheless, the structural and chemical complexity of MOFs poses a grand challenge to the development of a generalizable and feasible strategy for constructing MOF@polymer. Examples in the literature that showcase the presence of a well-defined polymer shell on the MOF with fully reserved porosity are rare. Moreover, methods for coating MOFs with condensation polymers (e.g., polyimide, polysulfone) are severely underexplored, despite their clear potential as membrane materials. In this Account, we present our group's effort over the past 4 years on the synthesis and applications of MOF@polymer composites. We first described a highly generalizable surface polymerization method that utilizes the rapid physisorption of a random copolymer (RCP) to carry initiating groups to the MOF surfaces. Subsequent controlled radical polymerization led to the formation of a uniform methacrylate or styrenic polymer on the MOF with tunable thickness and composition. To utilize the properties of condensation polymers, we pioneered the covalent grafting of polyimide (PI) brushes to UiO-66-NH₂ surfaces. In addition, to circumvent the need for a covalent anchoring group, we further developed an MOF surface grafting method based on mechanical linkage. Instead of connecting to the ligand, polyimide (PI) oligomer was linked to a functionalized linear polymer physically entangled within an MOF, thus realizing surface grafting with PI. Alternatively, PIs, polysulfone (PSF), and polycarbonate (PC) can also be grafted to various MOF surfaces through a metal-organic nanocapsule (MONC)-mediated method using a combination of electrostatic interaction and coordination bonds. To find a rapid and low-cost surface coating method suitable for commercialization, a new approach called non-solvent-induced surface-aimed deposition (NISAP) was developed. The action of the solvent phase separation drives dianhydrides and polyamines to the MOF surface, thus realizing accelerated polymerization and the rapid formation of a polymer coating on the MOF. Finally, we provided an overview of the unique properties and potential applications of MOF@polymer composites, including improved stability, MMMs, porous liquids (PLs), and immobilizing homogeneous catalysts. We hope that this Account can inspire more researchers to further develop and optimize the synthetic strategies for MOF@polymer and uncover its full application potential.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Colloidal Particle Synthesis, Assembly, and Application

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) assembled from metal nodes and organic ligands have received significant attention over the past two decades for their fascinating porous properties and broad applications. Colloidal MOFs (CMOFs) not only inherit the intrinsic properties of MOFs, but can also serve as building blocks for self-assembly to make functional materials. Compared to bulk MOFs, the colloidal size of CMOFs facilitates further manipulation of CMOF particles in a single or collective state in a liquid medium. The resulting crystalline order obtained by self-assembly in position and orientation can effectively improve performance. In this review, we summarize the latest developments of CMOFs in synthesis strategies, self-assembly methods, and related applications. Finally, we discuss future challenges and opportunities of CMOFs in synthesis and assembly, by which we hope that CMOFs can be further developed into new areas for a wider range of applications.

Carrier Variety Used in Immobilization of His6-OPH Extends Its Application Areas

Organophosphorus hydrolase, containing a genetically introduced hexahistidine sequence (His₆-OPH), attracts the attention of researchers by its promiscuous activity in hydrolytic reactions with various substrates, such as organophosphorus pesticides and chemical warfare agents, mycotoxins, and N-acyl homoserine lactones. The application of various carrier materials (metal-organic frameworks, polypeptides, bacterial cellulose, polyhydroxybutyrate, succinylated gelatin, etc.) for the immobilization and stabilization of His₆-OPH by various methods, enables creation of biocatalysts with various properties and potential uses, in particular, as antidotes, recognition elements of biosensors, in fibers with chemical and biological protection, dressings with antimicrobial properties, highly porous sorbents for the degradation of toxicants, including in flow systems, etc. The use of computer modeling methods in the development of immobilized His₆-OPH samples provides in silico prediction of emerging interactions between the enzyme and immobilizing polymer, which may have negative effects on the catalytic properties of the enzyme, and selection of the best options for experiments in vitro and in vivo. This review is aimed at analysis of known developments with immobilized His₆-OPH, which allows to recognize existing recent trends in this field of research, as well as to identify the reasons limiting the use of a number of polymer molecules for the immobilization of this enzyme.

Dative B←N bonds based crystalline organic framework with permanent porosity for acetylene storage and separation

The utilization of dative B←N bonds for the creation of crystalline organic framework (BNOF) has increasingly received intensive interest; however, the shortage of permanent porosity is an obstacle that must be overcome to guarantee their application as porous materials. Here, we report the first microporous crystalline framework, BNOF-1, that is assembled through sole monomers, which can be scalably synthesized by the cheap 4-pyridine boronic acid. The 2D networks of BNOF-1 were stacked in parallel to generate a highly porous supramolecular open framework, which possessed not only the highest BET surface area of 1345 m² g^-1 amongst all of the BNOFs but also features a record-high uptake of C₂H₂ and CO₂ in covalent organic framework (COF) materials to date. Dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrated that BNOF-1 material can efficiently separate C₂H₂/CO₂ mixtures. In addition, the network can be regenerated in organic solvents with no loss in performance, making its solution processable. We believe that BNOF-1 would greatly diversify the reticular chemistry and open new avenues for the application of BNOFs.

Signal-On Near-Infrared Photoelectrochemical Aptasensors for Sensing VEGF165 Based on Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Nd-MOF Nanorods and In-Site Formation of Gold Nanoparticles

The low photon energy and deep penetrating ability of near-infrared (NIR) light make it an ideal light source for a photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensing system. Absorption wavelengths of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be regulated by adjusting the metal ions and the conjugation degree of the ligands. Herein, an ionic liquid with a large conjugated structure was synthesized and was used as a ligand to coordinate with Nd ions to prepare Nd-MOF nanorods with a band gap of 1.26 eV. The Nd-MOF rods show a good photoabsorption property from 200 to 980 nm. A PEC platform was constructed by using Nd-MOF nanorods as the photoelectroactive element. A detachable double-stranded DNA labeled with alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which is specific to VEGF165, was immobilized onto the PEC sensing interface. After blocking unspecific active sites with bovine albumin, an NIR PEC aptasensing system was developed for VEGF165 detection. After being incubated in a mixture of VEGF165, l-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (magnesium salt hydrate) (AAP), and chloroauric acid, the aptamers for VEGF165 were detached from the PEC aptasensing interface, thus resulting in the decrease of the charge-transfer resistance and the increase of the photocurrent response. The shedding of the aptamers also makes the ALP approach the electrode surface, thus catalyzing the reduction of AAP to produce ascorbic acid (AA). Subsequently, AA reduces in situ chloroauric acid to produce AuNPs on the Nd-MOF-based sensing interface. With the excellent conductivity and localized surface plasmon resonance effect, the AuNPs can accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs generated from Nd-MOF nanorods, thus promoting the photoelectric conversion efficiency and achieving signal amplification. Under optimized conditions, the PEC responses were linearly related to the VEGF165 concentrations in the range of 0.01-100 ng mL^-1 and exhibit a low detection limit of 3.51 pg mL^-1 (S/N = 3). VEGF165 in human serum samples was detected by the NIR PEC aptasensor. Their concentrations were found to be well consistent with that obtained from ELISA. Furthermore, the PEC aptasensor demonstrated recoveries from 96.07 to 103.8%. The relative standard deviations were within 5%, indicating good accuracy and precision. The results further verify its practicability for clinical diagnosis.

Nanoscale pulverization effect in double-layered MOF-derived hierarchical G/Co@C composites for boosting electromagnetic wave dissipation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn a lot of interest as prospective starting points for highly effective electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers. However, the inevitable shrinkage and probable densification that occur during pyrolysis significantly reduce the microwave-loss capacity. A dual-layer MOF, ZIF-8@ZIF-67, is created and effectively decorated on graphene sheets as a solution to this problem. The shrinkage and densification were then suppressed by the subsequent pulverization effect between the two MOFs. Due to suitable compositions and specialized microstructures, G/Co@C exhibits excellent impedance matching and dissipates EMW by combining magnetic and dielectric loss. The maximum reflection loss of G/Co@C-7/paraffin is -55.0 dB at 5.8 GHz with just 7% filler. Therefore, the preparation of high-efficiency MOF-derived microwave absorbers by the pulverization effect is demonstrated to be an efficient strategy.

MOF-Based Sorbents Used for the Removal of Hg2+ from Aqueous Solutions via a Sorption-Assisted Microfiltration

Mercury is considered to be one of the most important chemicals of public health concern. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an effective method of removing mercury ions from aqueous solutions to protect people from exposure to this element. This paper presents research on the application of a sorption-assisted microfiltration (SAMF) hybrid process for the removal of Hg²⁺ from aqueous solutions. As adsorbents used in the process, the metal-organic-framework-UiO-66-type materials have been considered. The methods of synthesis of two types of metal-organic-framework (MOF) sorbents were developed: UiO-66_MAA modified with mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) and a composite of UiO-66 with cellulose. The results of the experiments performed proved that the separation of Hg²⁺ from water solutions conducted in such a system was effective; however, a relatively long initial contact time of reagents before filtration was required. The experimental results can be used to optimize the parameters of the SAMF process in order to obtain an effective method of Hg²⁺ removal from aqueous solutions.

Synthesis and Structure of a Copper-Based Functional Network for Efficient Organic Dye Adsorption

In the work, by incorporating polyoxometalates (POMs) into a copper(II)-based network, a novel three-dimensional (3D) porous framework, [Cu₁₇Cl₃(trz)₁₂]H₃[GaW₁₂O₄₀]·9H₂O (Cu-GaW-TRZ), was successfully prepared and explored for the adsorption of dyes. The adsorption capacity of Cu-GaW-TRZ was calculated as 13.11 mg/g, and the dye adsorption rate equaled 96.2% for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Furthermore, this recyclable adsorbent is stable enough without obvious loss of adsorption capacity for at least five runs. Meanwhile, the structure of the macropores is suitable for the entry of large molecular dyes, and [GaW₁₂O₄₀]^5- also can achieve efficient adsorption for cationic dyes. The results displayed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and were well matched for MB adsorption onto Cu-GaW-TRZ. The free energy, entropy, and enthalpy of the thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of MB were calculated, which revealed that the adsorption process was befitting for the adsorption of MB.
