Heteroleptic trivalent chromium in coordination chemistry: Novel building blocks for addressing old challenges in multimetallic luminescent complexes

Ferromagnetically Coupled Chromium(III) Dimer Shows Luminescence and Sensitizes Photon Upconversion

There has been much progress on mononuclear chromium(III) complexes featuring luminescence and photoredox activity, but dinuclear chromium(III) complexes have remained underexplored in these contexts until now. We identified a tridentate chelate ligand able to accommodate both meridional and facial coordination of chromium(III), to either access a mono- or a dinuclear chromium(III) complex depending on reaction conditions. This chelate ligand causes tetragonally distorted primary coordination spheres around chromium(III) in both complexes, entailing comparatively short excited-state lifetimes in the range of 400 to 800 ns in solution at room temperature and making photoluminescence essentially oxygen insensitive. The two chromium(III) ions in the dimer experience ferromagnetic exchange interactions that result in a high spin (S=3) ground state with a coupling constant of +9.3 cm-1. Photoinduced energy transfer from the luminescent ferromagnetically coupled dimer to an anthracene derivative results in sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion. Based on these proof-of-principle studies, dinuclear chromium(III) complexes seem attractive for the development of fundamentally new types of photophysics and photochemistry enabled by magnetic exchange interactions.

Metal exsolution from perovskite-based anodes in solid oxide fuel cells

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are highly efficient and environmentally friendly devices for converting fuel into electrical energy. In this regard, metal nanoparticles (NPs) loaded onto the anode oxide play a crucial role due to their exceptional catalytic activity. NPs synthesized through exsolution exhibit excellent dispersion and stability, garnering significant attention for comprehending the exsolution process mechanism and consequently improving synthesis effectiveness. This review presents recent advancements in the exsolution process, focusing on the influence of oxygen vacancies, A-site defects, lattice strain, and phase transformation on the variation of the octahedral crystal field in perovskites. Moreover, we offer insights into future research directions to further enhance our understanding of the mechanism and achieve significant exsolution of NPs on perovskites.

Electronic Structure and Excited-State Dynamics of the NIR-II Emissive Molybdenum(III) Analogue to the Molecular Ruby

Photoactive chromium(III) complexes saw a conceptual breakthrough with the discovery of the prototypical molecular ruby mer-[Cr(ddpd)2]3+ (ddpd = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine), which shows intense long-lived near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescence from metal-centered spin-flip states. In contrast to the numerous studies on chromium(III) photophysics, only 10 luminescent molybdenum(III) complexes have been reported so far. Here, we present the synthesis and characterization of mer-MoX3(ddpd) (1, X = Cl; 2, X = Br) and cisfac-[Mo(ddpd)2]3+ (cisfac-[3]3+), an isomeric heavy homologue of the prototypical molecular ruby. For cisfac-[3]3+, we found strong zero-field splitting using magnetic susceptibility measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Electronic spectra covering the spin-forbidden transitions show that the spin-flip states in mer-1, mer-2, and cisfac-[3]3+ are much lower in energy than those in comparable chromium(III) compounds. While all three complexes show weak spin-flip phosphorescence in NIR-II, the emission of cisfac-[3]3+ peaking at 1550 nm is particularly low in energy. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy reveals a short excited-state lifetime of 1.4 ns, 6 orders of magnitude shorter than that of mer-[Cr(ddpd)2]3+. Using density functional theory and ab initio multireference calculations, we break down the reasons for this disparity and derive principles for the design of future stable photoactive molybdenum(III) complexes.

Unexpected Boost in Activity of a Cu(I) Photosensitizer by Stabilizing a Transient Excited State

In this study, we present a slight but surprisingly successful structural modification of the previously reported heteroleptic Cu(I) photosensitizer Cubiipo ([(xantphos)Cu(biipo)]PF₆; biipo = 16H-benzo-[4',5']-isoquinolino-[2',1':1,2]-imidazo-[4,5-f]-[1,10]-phenanthrolin-16-one). As a key feature, biipo bears a naphthalimide unit at the back, which is directly fused to a phenanthroline moiety to extend the conjugated π-system. This ligand was now altered to include two additional methyl groups at the 2,9-positions at the phenanthroline scaffold. Comparing the novel Cudmbiipo complex to its predecessor, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy reveals the efficient suppression of a major deactivation pathway by stabilization of a transient triplet state. Furthermore, quantitative measurements of singlet oxygen evolution in solution confirmed that a larger fraction of the excited-state population is transferred to the photocatalytically active ligand-centered triplet ³LC state with a much longer lifetime of ∼30 μs compared to Cubiipo (2.6 μs). In addition, Cudmbiipo was compared with the well-established reference complex Cubcp ([(xantphos)Cu(bathocuproine)]PF₆) in terms of its photophysical and photocatalytic properties by applying time-resolved femto- and nanosecond absorption, step-scan Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and emission spectroscopies. Superior light-harvesting properties and a greatly enhanced excited-state lifetime with respect to Cubcp enable Cudmbiipo to be more active in exemplary photocatalytic applications, i.e., in the formation of singlet oxygen and the isomerization of (E)-stilbene.

Complex-as-Ligand Strategy as a Tool for the Design of a Binuclear Nonsymmetrical Chromium(III) Assembly: Near-Infrared Double Emission and Intramolecular Energy Transfer

The chromium(III) polypyridyl complexes are appealing for their long-lived near-infrared (NIR) emission reaching the millisecond range and for the strong circularly polarized luminescence of their isolated enantiomers. However, harnessing those properties in functional polynuclear Cr^III devices remains mainly inaccessible because of the lack of synthetic methods for their design and functionalization. Even the preparation and investigation of most basic nonsymmetrical Cr^III dyads exhibiting directional intramolecular intermetallic energy transfer remain unexplored. Taking advantage of the inertness of heteroleptic chromium(III) polypyridyl building blocks, we herein adapt the "complex-as-ligand" strategy, largely used with precious 4d and 5d metals, for the preparation of a binuclear nonsymmetrical Cr^III complex (3d metal). The resulting [(phen)₂Cr(L)Cr(tpy)]⁶⁺ dyad shows dual long-lived NIR emission and a directional intermetallic energy transfer that is controlled by the specific arrangements of the different coordination spheres. This strategy opens a route for building predetermined polynuclear assemblies with this earth-abundant metal.

Long-lived, near-IR emission from Cr(III) under ambient conditions

Heteroleptic mer-[Cr(N∩N∩N)(CN)3] complexes: synthetic challenge, structural characterization and photophysical properties

The substitution of three water molecules around trivalent chromium in CrBr₃·6H₂O with the tridentate 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine (tpy), N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-di(pyridine-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine (ddpd) or 2,6-di(quinolin-8-yl)pyridine (dqp) ligands gives the heteroleptic mer-[Cr(L)Br₃] complexes. Stepwise treatments with Ag(CF₃SO₃) and KCN under microwave irradiations provide mer-[Cr(L)(CN)₃] in moderate yields. According to their X-ray crystal structures, the associated six-coordinate meridional [CrN₃C₃] chromophores increasingly deviate from a pseudo-octahedral arrangement according to L = ddpd ≈ dpq ≪ tpy; a trend in line with the replacement of six-membered with five-membered chelate rings around Cr^III. Room-temperature ligand-centered UV-excitation at 18 170 cm⁻¹ (λ_exc = 350 nm), followed by energy transfer and intersystem crossing eventually yield microsecond metal-centered Cr(²E → ⁴A₂) phosphorescence in the red to near infrared domain 13 150–12 650 cm⁻¹ (760 ≤ λ_em ≤ 790 nm). Decreasing the temperature to liquid nitrogen (77 K) extends the emission lifetimes to reach the millisecond regime with a record of 4.02 ms for mer-[Cr(dqp)(CN)₃] in frozen acetonitrile.

The heteroleptic mer-[Cr(L)(CN)₃] (L = tpy, ddpd, dqp) complexes with their C_2v-symmetrical [CrC₃N₃] luminescent chromophores represent the missing links between pseudo-octahedral [CrN₆] and [CrC₆] units found in their well-known homoleptic parents.

Bulky ligands protect molecular ruby from oxygen quenching

Steric protection strongly reduces phosphorescence quenching of excited molecular rubies by oxygen. The most bulky ligand enables photoluminescence quantum yields up to 5.1% and lifetimes up to 518 µs in air-saturated acetonitrile.

Effect of Cobalt and Chromium Ions on the Chlorhexidine Digluconate as Seen by Intermolecular Diffusion

Metal ions such as cobalt (II) and chromium (III) might be present in the oral cavity, as a consequence of the corrosion of Co-Cr dental alloys. The diffusion of such metal ions into the organism, carried by saliva, can cause health problems as a consequence of their toxicity, enhanced by a cumulative effect in the body. The effect of the chlorhexidine digluconate, which is commonly used in mouthwash formulations, on the transport of these salts is evaluated in this paper by using the Taylor dispersion technique, which will allow an assessment of how the presence of chlorhexidine digluconate (either in aqueous solution or in a commercial formulation) may affect the diffusion of metal ions. The ternary mutual diffusion coefficients of metal ions (Co and Cr) in the presence of chlorhexidine digluconate, in an artificial saliva media, were measured. Significant coupled diffusion of CoCl₂ (and CrCl₃) and chlorhexidine digluconate is observed by analysis of the non-zero values of the cross-diffusion coefficients, D₁₂ and D₂₁. The observed interactions between metal ions and chlorhexidine digluconate suggest that the latter might be considered as an advantageous therapeutic agent, once they contribute to the reduction of the concentration of those ions inside the mouth.

Adenine Radical Cation Formation by a Ligand-Centered Excited State of an Intercalated Chromium Polypyridyl Complex Leads to Enhanced DNA Photo-oxidation

Assessment of the DNA photo-oxidation and synthetic photocatalytic activity of chromium polypyridyl complexes is dominated by consideration of their long-lived metal-centered excited states. Here we report the participation of the excited states of [Cr(TMP)₂dppz]³⁺ (1) (TMP = 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline; dppz = dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine) in DNA photoreactions. The interactions of enantiomers of 1 with natural DNA or with oligodeoxynucleotides with varying AT content (0–100%) have been studied by steady state UV/visible absorption and luminescence spectroscopic methods, and the emission of 1 is found to be quenched in all systems. The time-resolved infrared (TRIR) and visible absorption spectra (TA) of 1 following excitation in the region between 350 to 400 nm reveal the presence of relatively long-lived dppz-centered states which eventually yield the emissive metal-centered state. The dppz-localized states are fully quenched when bound by GC base pairs and partially so in the presence of an AT base-pair system to generate purine radical cations. The sensitized formation of the adenine radical cation species (A^•+T) is identified by assigning the TRIR spectra with help of DFT calculations. In natural DNA and oligodeoxynucleotides containing a mixture of AT and GC of base pairs, the observed time-resolved spectra are consistent with eventual photo-oxidation occurring predominantly at guanine through hole migration between base pairs. The combined targeting of purines leads to enhanced photo-oxidation of guanine. These results show that DNA photo-oxidation by the intercalated 1, which locates the dppz in contact with the target purines, is dominated by the LC centered excited state. This work has implications for future phototherapeutics and photocatalysis.
