Classification and role of modulators on crystal engineering of metal organic frameworks (MOFs)

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Hetero-Phase Nanostructure Photocatalysts with Molecular-Scale Tunable Energy Levels

As an effective method to modulate the physicochemical properties of materials, crystal phase engineering, especially hetero-phase, plays an important role in developing high-performance photocatalysts. However, it is still a huge challenge but significant to construct porous hetero-phase nanostructures with adjustable band structures. As a kind of unique porous crystalline materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) might be the appropriate candidate, but the MOF-based hetero-phase is rarely reported. Herein, we developed a secondary building unit (SBU) regulating strategy to prepare two crystal phases of Ti-MOFs constructed by titanium and 1,4-dicarboxybenzene, i.e., COK and MIL-125. Besides, COK/MIL-125 hetero-phase was further constructed. In the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, COK/MIL-125 possessed the highest H2 yield compared to COK and MIL-125, ascribing to the Z-Scheme homojunction at hetero-phase interface. Furthermore, by decorating with amino groups (i.e., NH2-COK/NH2-MIL-125), the light absorbing capacity was broadened to visible-light region, and the visible-light-driven H2 yield was greatly improved. Briefly, the MOF-based hetero-phase possesses periodic channel structures and molecularly adjustable band structures, which is scarce in traditional organic or inorganic materials. As a proof of concept, our work not only highlights the development of MOF-based hetero-phase nanostructures, but also paves a novel avenue for designing high-performance photocatalysts.

Downsizing and soft X-ray tomography for cellular uptake of interpenetrated metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with potential in biomedical applications such as sensing, drug delivery, and radiosensitization. However, how to tune the properties of the MOFs for such applications remains challenging. Herein, we synthesized two MOFs, Zr-PEB and Hf-PEB. Zr-PEB can be classified as porous interpenetrated zirconium frameworks (PIZOFs) and Hf-PEB is its analogue. We controlled their sizes while maintaining their crystal structure by employing a coordination modulation strategy. They were designed to serve as sensitizer for X-ray therapy and as potential drug carriers. Comprehensive characterizations of the MOFs' properties have been conducted, and the in vitro biological impacts have been studied. Since viability assay showed that Hf-PEB was more biocompatible compared to Zr-PEB, the cellular uptake of Hf-PEB by cells was evaluated using both fluorescence microscopy and soft X-ray tomography (SXT), and the three-dimensional structure of Hf-PEB in cells was observed. The results revealed the potential of Zr-PEB and Hf-PEB as nanomaterials for biomedical applications and demonstrated that SXT is an effective tool to assist the development of such materials.

Morphology Regulation of UiO-66-2I Supporting Systematic Investigations of Shape-Dependent Catalytic Activity for Degradation of an Organophosphate Nerve Agent Simulant

Phosphonate-based nerve agents, as a kind of deadly chemical warfare agent, are a persistent and evolving threat to humanity. Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) are a kind of highly porous crystalline material that includes Zr-OH-Zr sites and imitates the active sites of the phosphotriesterase enzyme, representing significant potential for the adsorption and catalytic hydrolysis of phosphonate-based nerve agents. In this work, we present a new Zr-MOF, UiO-66-2I, which attaches two iodine atoms in the micropore of the MOF and exhibits excellent catalytic activity on the degradation of a nerve agent simulant, dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP), as the result of the formation of halogen bonds between the phosphate ester bonds and iodine groups. Furthermore, various morphologies of UiO-66-2I, such as blocky-shaped nanoparticles (NPs), two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, hexahedral NPs, stick-like NPs, colloidal microspheres, and colloidal NPs, have been obtained by adding acetic acid (AA), formic acid (FA), propionic acid (PA), valeric acid (VA), benzoic acid (BA), and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as modulators, respectively, and show different catalytic hydrolysis activities. Specifically, the catalytic activities follow the trend UiO-66-2I-FA (t1/2 = 1 min) > UiO-66-2I-AA-NP (t1/2 = 4 min) ≈ UiO-66-2I-VA (t1/2 = 4 min) > UiO-66-2I-BA (t1/2 = 5 min) > UiO-66-2I-PA (t1/2 = 15 min) > UiO-66-2I-TFA (t1/2 = 18 min). The experimental results show that the catalytic hydrolysis activity of Zr-MOF is regulated by the crystallinity, defect quantity, morphologies, and hydrophilicity of these samples, which synergistically affect the accessibility of catalytic sites and the diffusion of phosphate in the pores of Zr-MOFs.

Unified Roadmap for ZIF-8 Nucleation and Growth: Machine Learning Analysis of Synthetic Variables and Their Impact on Particle Size and Morphology

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have settled in the scientific community over the last decades as versatile materials with several applications. Among those, zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) is a well-known MOF that has been applied in various and diverse fields, from drug-delivery platforms to microelectronics. However, the complex role played by the reaction parameters in controlling the size and morphology of ZIF-8 particles is still not fully understood. Even further, many individual reports propose different nucleation and growth mechanisms for ZIF-8, thus creating a fragmented view for the behavior of the system. To provide a unified view, we have generated a comprehensive data set of synthetic conditions and their final outputs and applied machine learning techniques to analyze the data. Our approach has enabled us to identify the nucleation and growth mechanisms operating for ZIF-8 in a given sub-space of synthetic variables space (chemical space) and to reveal their impact on important features such as final particle size and morphology. By doing so, we draw connections and establish a hierarchy for the role of each synthetic variable and provide with rule of thumb for attaining control on the final particle size. Our results provide a unified roadmap for the nucleation and growth mechanisms of ZIF-8 in agreement with mainstream reported trends, which can guide the rational design of ZIF-8 particles which ultimately determine their suitability for any given targeted application. Altogether, our work represents a step forward in seeking control of the properties of MOFs through a deeper understanding of the rationale behind the synthesis procedures employed for their synthesis.

Simultaneous size and defect control of metal-organic framework by deep eutectic solvent for efficient perfluoroalkyl substances adsorption: Delving into mechanism

This study reports an environment-friendly protocol to prepare a metal-organic framework (MOF) with simultaneously controlled particle size and open metal site for adsorption removal of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The successful preparation of UiO-66 with defect and crystal size modulation was achieved using a green and straightforward method, adjusting the components and molar ratios of ammonium salt/glycolic acid deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The corresponding modulation mechanism primarily relied on the combined regulation of the deprotonation and competitive coordination abilities of the eutectic solvent components. The adsorption process was thoroughly examined using spectral analyses, adsorption behavior profiling, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results revealed that PFAS adsorption is driven by combined capturing effects, such as CF-π, acid/base coordination, C-F⋯Zr, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. Our findings were not thus that the smaller the crystal size of MOF and the higher the defect concentration in the material, the better the PFAS adsorption performance. The result demonstrated the combined effect of these adsorbent features on PFAS mixtures. Furthermore, they revealed unique differences in sorption properties between these targets with different carbon chain lengths. Extensive defects in DES-based UiO-66 led to larger pores, increasing the availability of many adsorption sites and aiding in PFAS adsorption and diffusion. Nevertheless, the surplus of larger pores in the substance increased the competitive adsorption, reducing the total quantity of PFASs absorbed. Furthermore, various interactions and a less restrictive configuration increased the contact of functional groups with adsorbates, substantially enhancing the adsorption. This study investigates the basic questions about how PFAS molecules are adsorbed on DES-based MOFs and the relationship among the structure, properties, and performance to improve the efficiency of this novel adsorbent.

Zeta Potential and Size Analysis of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Nanocrystals Prepared by Surfactant-Assisted Synthesis

The crystal nucleation and growth mechanism of monodispersed metal-organic framework nanoparticles were studied using time-resolved light dynamic, electrokinetic, and powder X-ray diffraction methods. We confirmed that zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocrystals follow a nonclassical crystal growth pathway, where a fast nucleation occurs with dense liquid clusters or nanocrystals forming spontaneously when two precursors are mixed. We also explored the zeta potential and solvodynamic size changes of ZIF-8 prepared by a surfactant-assisted synthesis. Three modulators, including 1-methylimidazole (1-mIm), tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (THAM), and (1-hexadecyl)trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were studied. We found that 1-mIm dramatically increases the rate of nucleation of ZIF-8. With an increasing amount of 1-mIm, which functions as a coordination modulator, the size increases, and the zeta potential of ZIF-8 decreases. Whereas THAM, as both a coordination and a deprotonation modulator, increases the size and zeta potential of ZIF-8 simultaneously, CTAB, as a long alkyl cationic surfactant, mainly adsorbs on the surface of ZIF-8, and the zeta potential of the formed ZIF-8 is controlled by the amount of CTAB in solution compared with its critical micelle concentration. Overall, we reveal that the modulator type and concentration can be used to control the size and zeta potential of the dispersed ZIF-8 nanocrystals in a colloid system. The experiments also enable identification of the nucleation and crystal growth processes of ZIF-8. The findings will be applicable to other nanocrystals in colloid systems, which are used for heterogeneous catalysis and guest molecular loadings.

Defective copper-based metal-organic frameworks for the efficient extraction of organosulfur compounds from garlic-processing wastewater

Organosulfur compounds (OSCs) in garlic-processing wastewater are decomposed and generated to toxic and harmful substances with unpleasant odors under anaerobic conditions. Herein, were report the successful development of novel copper-based metal organic framework (Cu-MOF) adsorbents with high adsorption capacities for OSCs in aqueous media. Defect-rich Cu-MOF-X samples, with particle sizes between 360 and 750 nm, synthesized hydrothermal in the presence of acetic acid (where X denotes the molar ratio of acetic acid relative to the pentadentate MOF linker H4PPYD). OSC adsorption experiments using allicin, ajoene and 2-ethenyl-4H-1,3-dithiine (2-VDT) showed that Cu-MOF-200 delivered fast adsorption kinetics and high OSC adsorption capacities (149.02-171.33 mg g-1) owing to the pore accessibility and range of adsorption sites in the MOF. FT-IR, Raman, and XPS analyses, together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, verified the strong yet reversible adsorption of OSCs in Cu-MOF-200. Results guide the development of improved adsorbents for OSC capture from garlic-processing wastewater.

A New Member of the Metal-Porphyrin Frameworks Family: Structure, Physicochemical Properties, Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide Adsorption

A novel holmium-based porous metal-porphyrin framework, {(H3 O+ )[Ho(H2 TPPS)]-  ⋅ 4H2 O}n (denoted as UPJS-17), was synthesised by hydrothermal reaction. Structural analysis reveals, that UPJS-17 has a three-dimensional open framework. The framework is negatively charged and the negative charge is compensated by hydronium cation. The compound showed no N2 adsorption but the Ar, CO2 and H2 . From the argon adsorption, the surface area of ~150 m2  g-1 was determined. Carbon dioxide adsorption was measured at various temperatures (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 °C) and the compound showed the highest adsorption capacity (at 0 °C) of 7.0 wt % of CO2 . From the carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms the isosteric heat of 56,5 kJ mol-1 was determined. Hydrogen adsorption was studied at -196 °C with hydrogen uptake of 2.1 wt % at 1 bar.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

A Robust n-n Heterojunction: CuN and BN Boosting for Ambient Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia

An n-n type heterojunction comprising with CuN and BN dual active sites is synthesized via in situ growth of a conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) [Cu3 (HITP)2 ] (HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene) on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets (hereafter denoted as Cu3 (HITP)2 @h-BN) for the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR). The optimized Cu3 (HITP)2 @h-BN shows the outstanding eNRR performance with the NH3 production of 146.2 µg h-1 mgcat -1 and the Faraday efficiency of 42.5% due to high porosity, abundant oxygen vacancies, and CuN/BN dual active sites. The construction of the n-n heterojunction efficiently modulates the state density of active metal sites toward the Fermi level, facilitating the charge transfer at the interface between the catalyst and reactant intermediates. Additionally, the pathway of NH3 production catalyzed by the Cu3 (HITP)2 @h-BN heterojunction is illustrated by in situ FT-IR spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation. This work presents an alternative approach to design advanced electrocatalysts based on conductive MOFs.

Highly defective copper-based metal-organic frameworks for the efficient adsorption and detection of organophosphorus pesticides: An experimental and computational investigation

Organophosphorus pesticide (OP) residues pose a serious threat to human health, motivating the search for novel adsorbents and detection methods. Herein, defective copper-based metal organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) were synthesized by the reaction of Cu²⁺ ions and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate linkers in the presence of acetic acid. As the amount of acetic acid increased, the crystallization kinetics and morphology of the Cu-MOFs changed, leading to mesoporous Cu-MOFs with many large surface pores (defects). Adsorption studies of OPs revealed the defective Cu-MOFs showed faster pesticide adsorption kinetics and higher pesticide adsorption capacities. Density functional theory calculations showed that pesticide adsorption in the Cu-MOFs was mainly electrostatic. A dispersive solid phase extraction method was developed based on a defective Cu-MOF-6 for rapidly extracting pesticides from food samples. The method allowed pesticide detection over a wide linear concentration range, low limits of detection (0.0067-0.0164 µg L^-1) and good recoveries in pesticide-spiked samples (81.03-109.55%).

Defective SO3H-MIL-101(Cr) for capturing different cationic metal ions: Performances and mechanisms

For broad-spectrum adsorption and capture toward cationic metal ions, a facile strategy was adopted to fabricate defective SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr) (SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-X, X = 2, 3, 4) with enhanced vacancies using seignette salt (SS) as the modulating agent. The boosted adsorption performances of SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-X toward eight different ions, including Ag⁺, Cs⁺, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺, Eu³⁺ and La³⁺ in both individual component and mixed component systems, could be ascribed to the effective mass transfer resulting from the exposure of defective sites. Especially, the optimal SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-3 could remove all the selected metal cations to below the permissible limits required by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the continuous-flow water treatment system. Furthermore, SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-3 exhibited good adsorption capacity (189.6 mg·g^-1) toward Pb²⁺ under neutral condition and excellent desorption recirculation performance (removal efficiency > 95% after 5 cycles). Moreover, the adsorption mechanism involved the electrostatic adsorption and coordinative interactions resulting from complexation between the adsorption active sites and targeted cations (like Cr-O-M and S-O-M), which were explored systematically via both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) determination and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Overall, this work provided guidance for modulating SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-X to promote its potential application in widespread metal cations removal from wastewater.

Effects of Acid Modulators on the Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Cr/Sn Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted remarkable attention for their distinguished structural designability. Precisely controlling the particle size and improving the structural stability of MOF nanoparticles influence their catalytic activity significantly. In this study, six acids (nitric, hydrochloric, formic, acetic, succinic, and citric acids) were used as modulators to prepare bimetallic MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) (MIL stands for Materials of Institut Lavoisier) via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Changes in volumetric, structural, stability, and catalytic properties, size, and shape of MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) were examined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and N2 adsorption–desorption measurements. All modulators altered the MOF properties. Compared with other samples, acetic acid as a modulator mildly altered the MOF morphology by narrowing their particle size distribution, enhancing the specific surface area, and significantly improving their water and thermal stabilities. The addition of acetic acid was suitable for the catalytic conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), achieving a 43.1% 5-HMF yield with 91.4% glucose conversion in a mixed solution of γ-valerolactone and saturated salt water at 150 °C after 30 min.

Strategies for improving the catalytic activity of metal-organic frameworks and derivatives in SR-AOPs: Facing emerging environmental pollutants

As persulfate activator, Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and derivatives are widely concerned in degradation of emerging environmental pollutants by advanced oxygen technology dominated by sulfate radical () (SR-AOPs). However, the poor stability and low catalytic efficiency limit the performance of MOFs, requiring multiple strategies to further enhance their catalytic activity. The aim of this paper is to improve the catalytic activity of MOFs and their derivatives by physical and chemical enhancement strategies. Physical enhancement strategies mainly refer to the activation strategies including thermal activation, microwave activation and photoactivation. However, the physical enhancement strategies need energy consumption and require high stability of MOFs. As a substitute, chemical enhancement strategies are more widely used and represented by optimization, modification, composites and derivatives. In addition, the identification of reactive oxygen species, active site and electron distribution are important for distinguishing radical and non-radical pathways. Finally, as a new wastewater treatment technology exploration of unknown areas in SR-AOPs could better promote the technology development.

Reticular Nanoscience: Bottom-Up Assembly Nanotechnology

The chemistry of metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs) is perhaps the most diverse and inclusive among the chemical sciences, and yet it can be radically expanded by blending it with nanotechnology. The result is reticular nanoscience, an area of reticular chemistry that has an immense potential in virtually any technological field. In this perspective, we explore the extension of such an interdisciplinary reach by surveying the explored and unexplored possibilities that framework nanoparticles can offer. We localize these unique nanosized reticular materials at the juncture between the molecular and the macroscopic worlds, and describe the resulting synthetic and analytical chemistry, which is fundamentally different from conventional frameworks. Such differences are mirrored in the properties that reticular nanoparticles exhibit, which we described while referring to the present state-of-the-art and future promising applications in medicine, catalysis, energy-related applications, and sensors. Finally, the bottom-up approach of reticular nanoscience, inspired by nature, is brought to its full extension by introducing the concept of augmented reticular chemistry. Its approach departs from a single-particle scale to reach higher mesoscopic and even macroscopic dimensions, where framework nanoparticles become building units themselves and the resulting supermaterials approach new levels of sophistication of structures and properties.

The chemistry behind room temperature synthesis of hafnium and cerium UiO-66 derivatives

RT formation of Hf and Ce UiO-66 derivatives is investigated using a one-step method where the linker and metal salt are simply combined, and a two-step method where the inorganic component is pre-heated to form metal clusters.

Use of modulators and light to control crystallisation of a hydrogen bonded framework

The effect of concentration, organic co-solvent, and salt modulators on the crystallisation of a hydrogen bonded framework was studied. The framework contains ∼1.4 nm wide channels and contains a diazobenzene based dicarboxylate anion. Light-induced cis/trans switching of this anion was also used to control crystallisation.

Robust pyridylbenzoate metal–organic frameworks as sorbents for volatile solvents and gases

Double-walled pyridylbenzoate MOFs display an order/disorder phase transition on solvation/desolvation. This allows the MOFs to retain structural integrity over multiple sorption cycles.
