Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives as emerging catalysts for electro-Fenton process in water purification

From lab to field: Prussian blue frameworks as sustainable cathode materials

Prussian blue and Prussian blue analogues have attracted increasing attention as versatile framework materials with a wide range of applications in catalysis, energy conversion and storage, and biomedical and environmental fields. In terms of energy storage and conversion, Prussian blue-based materials have emerged as suitable candidates of growing interest for the fabrication of batteries and supercapacitors. Their outstanding electrochemical features such as fast charge-discharge rates, high capacity and prolonged cycling life make them favorable for energy storage application. Furthermore, Prussian blue and its analogues as rechargeable battery anodes can advance significantly by the precise control of their structure, morphology, and composition at the nanoscale. Their tunable structural and electronic properties enable the detection of many types of analytes with high sensitivity and specificity, and thus, they are ideal materials for the development of sensors for environmental detection, disease trend monitoring, and industrial safety. Additionally, Prussian blue-based catalysts display excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of pollutants and generation of hydrogen. Specifically, their excellent light capturing and charge separation capabilities make them stand out in photocatalytic processes, providing a sustainable option for environmental remediation and renewable energy production. Besides, Prussian blue coatings have been studied particularly for corrosion protection, forming stable and protective layers on metal surfaces, which extend the lifespan of infrastructural materials in harsh environments. Prussian blue and its analogues are highly valuable materials in healthcare fields such as imaging, drug delivery and theranostics because they are biocompatible and their further functionalization is possible. Overall, this review demonstrates that Prussian blue and related framework materials are versatile and capable of addressing many technical challenges in various fields ranging from power generation to healthcare and environmental management.

Sulfate radical dominated rapid pollutants degradation leaded by selenium vacancies in core-shell N-doped carbon wrapped cobalt diselenide nanospheres

Herein, a new heterogeneous CoSe2-x@NC material with abundant selenium vacancies is synthesized via an in-situ carbonization-selenization process from cobaltic metal organic framework (Co-MOF). The obtained CoSe2-x@NC has a unique electronic structure and rich active sites, which can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) with superior catalytic performance and stability. The quenchingexperiments and EPR test show that SO4•- is the dominant reactive oxidation species (ROSs) for CBZ degradation. Significantly, systemic electrochemical tests and theoretical calculations illustrated that the dominant role of SO4•- is attributed to the existence of abundant selenium vacancies in CoSe2-x@NC, which can adjust the density of electron cloud of the Co atoms in CoSe2-x@NC to improve the PMS adsorption and promoting the conversion of transition metallic redox pairs (Co3+/Co2+). This work provides a facile way to improve the activity and stability of CoSe2 by defect engineering in the PMS based advanced oxidation process (AOPs).

A new strategy to construct MOF-on-MOF derivatives for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride from water by activation of peroxymonosulfate

A MOF-on-MOF composite derivative material named ZIF-67@Ce-MOF-600 was designed and synthesized. The preparation of ZIF-67@Ce-MOF-600 was optimized from the aspects of the ratio of metal and ligand, heat-treatment temperature. It was demonstrated by XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS and TEM. The optimum conditions for the activation of PMS by ZIF-67@Ce-MOF-600 for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) were investigated by adjusting the catalyst dosage, TC, pH, peoxymonosulfate (PMS) concentration, and different kinds of water, co-existing anions and pollution. Under optimal conditions (20 mg catalysts and 50 mg PMS added) in 100 mL of tetracyclines (TC) solvent (20 mg TC/L), the removal rate could reach up to 99.2% and after five cycles was 70.5%. The EPR results indicated the presence of free radicals and non-free radical, among which free radicals intended to play a major role in the degradation process. Its possible degradation pathways and attack sites were analyzed by liquid-phase mass spectrometry and DFT analysis.

Photocatalytic Hydrosilylation over Pt@UiO-66-NH2: Enhanced Activity and Polymerization Kinetics

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great research and application value in various types of hydrosilylation reactions. However, studies on photocatalysis-induced hydrosilylation using MOFs are extremely rare. Metal nanoparticles (MNPs)@MOFs are extensively studied for their excellent structural tunability and photocatalytic activity, but there are few reports on their application in photocatalytic hydrosilylation. Here, a novel photocatalyst consisting of platinum (Pt) nanoparticles immobilized in a MOF framework is synthesized and used for photocatalytic hydrosilylation. The effects of various factors on hydrosilylation conversion are investigated, including catalyst concentration, substrate ratio, and irradiation intensity. Furthermore, the photoreactivity of the synthesized Pt catalyst is evaluated in the presence of different concentrations of 2-chlorothixanthone as a photosensitizer. It is noteworthy that the conversion of the reaction increases with increasing catalyst concentration or photosensitizer concentration, whereas increasing the polymethylhydrosiloxane content does not lead to a significant increase in conversion. This study demonstrates the potential of MNPs@MOFs as efficient photocatalysts for photoinduced hydrosilylation reactions and paves the way for future applications in this area.

Regulating Surface Dipole Moments of TiO2 for the pH-Universal Cathodic Fenton-Like Process

Although electro-Fenton (EF) processes can avoid the safety risks raised by concentrated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), the Fe(III) reduction has always been either unstable or inefficient at high pH, resulting in catalyst deactivation and low selectivity of H2O2 activation for producing hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Herein, we provided a strategy to regulate the surface dipole moment of TiO2 by Fe anchoring (TiO2-Fe), which, in turn, substantially increased the H2O2 activation for •OH production. The TiO2-Fe catalyst could work at pH 4-10 and maintained considerable degradation efficiency for 10 cycles. Spectroscopic analysis and a theoretical study showed that the less polar Fe-O bond on TiO2-Fe could finely tune the polarity of H2O2 to alter its empty orbital distribution, contributing to better ciprofloxacin degradation activity within a broad pH range. We further verified the critical role of the weakened polarity of H2O2 on its homolysis into •OH by theoretically and experimentally investigating Cu-, Co-, Ni-, Mn-, and Mo-anchored TiO2. This concept offers an avenue for elaborate design of green, robust, and pH-universal cathodic Fenton-like catalysts and beyond.

MOF-derived Fe/Ni@C marigold-like nanosheets as heterogeneous electro-Fenton cathode for efficient antibiotic oxytetracycline degradation

The widespread occurrence of organic antibiotic pollution in the environment and the associated harmful effects necessitate effective treatment method. Heterogeneous electro-Fenton (hetero-EF) has been regarded as one of the most promising techniques towards organic pollutant removal. However, the preparation of efficient cathode still remains challenging. Herein, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived Fe/Ni@C marigold-like nanosheets were fabricated successfully for the degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) by serving as the hetero-EF cathode. The FeNi3@C (Fe/Ni molar ratio of 1:3) based hetero-EF system exhibited 8.2 times faster OTC removal rate than that of anodic oxidation and possessed many advantages such as excellent OTC degradation efficiency (95.4% within 90 min), broad environmental adaptability (satisfactory treatment performance for multiple antibiotics under various actual water matrixes), good stability and reusability, and significant toxicity reduction. The superior hetero-EF catalytic performance was mainly attributed to: 1) porous carbon and Ni existence were both conducive to the in-situ generation of H2O2 from dissolved O2; 2) the synergistic effects of bimetals together with electron transfer from the cathode promoted the regeneration of ≡ FeII/NiII, thereby accelerating the production of reactive oxygen species; 3) the unique nanosheet structure derived from the precursor two-dimensional Fe-Ni MOFs enhanced the accessibility of active sites. This work presented a promising hetero-EF cathode for the electrocatalytic treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewaters.

Highly active electroreduction of nitrates to ammonia over a zeolitic imidazolium framework-derived Fe single-atom catalyst with sulfur-modified asymmetric active centers

The electroreduction of aqueous nitrate (NO3-) to ammonium is an energy-efficient process that helps protect the environment and facilitates ammonia production. However, a fine optimization of the catalyst structure containing active centers should be performed to improve the efficiencies of NO3- reduction and NH4+ production. Herein, a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived sulfur-modified Fe single-atom catalyst is developed as an efficient and durable cathode material. Experimental and theoretical studies confirm the role of S-doping in modifying the electron density distribution of Fe centers, promoting the interaction between the Fe 3d orbital and O 2p orbital of NO3- and thereby enhancing its catalytic performance. A Faradaic efficiency of 93.9% for NH4+ production at - 0.47 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode is achieved, which remains at 91.0% even after six cycles. A synergistic effect between a defect-rich support and metal atom centers can be utilized to develop a new strategy for the facile design and implementation of high-performance electrocatalysts.

Enhanced recovery of phosphorus from hypophosphite-laden wastewater via field-induced electro-Fenton coupled with anodic oxidation

Electrochemical recovered ferric phosphate (FePO4) precipitates from hypophosphite-laden wastewater were shown to be an efficient method for phosphorus (P) recovery. However, the influence of chloride ions (Cl-) coexisting commonly in wastewater is not known for this treatment. Herein, a field-induced electro-Fenton coupled with anodic oxidation electrochemical system consisting of a Ti-RuO2 anode, an Fe inductive electrode and an activated carbon fiber (ACF) cathode, namely Ti-RuO2/Fe/ACF(NaCl) system, was established to recover phosphorus (P) as FePO4 from hypophosphite-laden wastewater in the presence of Cl-. This system enabled a hypophosphite (H2PO2-, 1.0 mM) removal ratio of ~100% and all P was recovered within 30 min at 5.0 V under the initial solution pH of 3.0. The Faradaic efficiency and energy consumption of P recovery achieved the maximum value (~94%) and the lowest value (~16 kW h kg-1 P), respectively. Reactive oxygen species including 1O2, FeIVO2+, •O2- and •OH contribute to convert H2PO2- to PO43-, which immediately formed FePO4 with the generated Fe3+ at the optimized conditions. Therein, the contribution of non-radical 1O2 was very considerable. This system exhibited good stability. The efficiency and cost for treatment of actual hypophosphite-laden wastewater were addressed to check its applicability for P recovery.

Aggregation behavior of polystyrene nanoplastics: Role of surface functional groups and protein and electrolyte variation

Aggregation kinetics of plastics are affected by the surface functional groups and exposure orders (electrolyte and protein) with kinds of mechanisms in aquatic environment. This study investigates the aggregation of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) with varying surface functional groups in the presence of common electrolytes (NaCl, CaCl2, Na2SO4) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). It also examines the impact of different exposure orders, namely BSA + NaCl (adding them together), BSA → NaCl (adding BSA firstly and then NaCl), and NaCl → BSA (adding NaCl firstly and then BSA), on PSNPs aggregation. The presence of BSA decreased the critical coagulation concentration in NaCl (CCCNa+) of the non-modified PS-Bare from 222.17 to 142.81 mM (35.72%), but increased that of the carboxyl-modified PS-COOH from 157.34 to 160.03 mM (1.71%). This might be ascribed to the thicker absorbed layer of BSA onto the PS-Bare surface, known from Ohshima's soft particle theory. Their aggregation in CaCl2 was both increased because of Ca2+ bridging. Different from the monotonous effects of BSA on PS-Bare and PS-COOH, BSA initially facilitated PS-NH2 aggregation via patch-charge attraction, then inhibited it at higher salt levels through steric repulsion. Furthermore, exposure orders had no significant effect on PS-Bare and PS-COOH, but had a NaCl concentration-dependent impact on PS-NH2. At the low NaCl concentrations (10 and 100 mM), no obvious influence could be observed. While, at 300 mM NaCl, the high concentrations of BSA could not totally stabilize the salt-induced aggregates in NaCl → BSA, but could achieve it in the other two orders. These might be attributed to the electrical double layer compression by NaCl, "patch-charge" force and steric hindrance by BSA. These experimental findings shed light on the potential fate and transport of nanoparticles in aquatic environments.

Perspective into ion storage of pristine metal-organic frameworks in capacitive deionization

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring tunable conductivity, tailored pore/structure and high surface area, have emerged as promising electrode nanomaterials for ion storage in capacitive deionization (CDI) and garnered tremendous attention in recent years. Despite the many advantages, the perspective from which MOFs should be designed and prepared for use as CDI electrode materials still faces various challenges that hinder their practical application. This summary proposes design principles for the pore size, pore environment, structure and dimensions of MOFs to precisely tailor the surface area, selectivity, conductivity, and Faradaic activity of electrode materials based on the ion storage mechanism in the CDI process. The account provides a new perspective to deepen the understanding of the fundamental issues of MOFs electrode materials to further meet the practical applications of CDI.

Removal of low concentration of perchlorate from natural water by quaternized chitosan sphere (CGQS): Efficiency and mechanism research

In this study, an innovative approach utilizing betaine as a raw material was employed to effectively modify the surface of chitosan with quaternary ammonium groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) characterization showed that the quaternary ammonium groups on betaine were successfully loaded on the chitosan surface. The effects of dosage, pH, initial perchlorate concentration, temperature and co-existing anions on the removal efficiency of perchlorate were investigated. The saturated adsorption capacity of CGQS was 35.41 mg/g under natural condition. The impact of initial perchlorate concentrations and column flow rates on the column adsorption experiments were investigated, as well as natural water tests. Sterilizing performance experiments of CGQS were carried out innovatively. Under the condition of initial concentration of 0.5 mg/L, 9 BV/h (bed volume per hour), the effluent natural water was up to standard (≤0.07 mg/L) with a treatment capacity of 210 BV/g, and the sterilizing rate of CGQS was up to 97.02%. The proposed adsorption mechanisms involved surface pore adsorption, electrostatic adsorption of quaternary ammonium groups, and ion exchange between chloride and perchlorate ions. The CGQS prepared in this work had great potential for treating trace perchlorate contamination in natural water.

A highly porous fiber coating based on a Zn-MOF/COF hybrid material for solid-phase microextraction of PAHs in soil

This study involved the development of a novel adsorbent by combining a Zn-based MOF with a melamine-based COF, resulting in the formation of a hybrid material known as Zn-MOF/COF. The adsorbent was characterized using FT-IR, SEM, XRD, EDX, and BET analysis techniques. The resulting Zn-MOF/COF sorbent was employed to prepare solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers for the extraction and enrichment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soil samples, after coupling with GC-FID. A Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize key variables of SPME conditions. Under optimal conditions of 85 °C for 30 min extraction with 23 μL g-1 sample's moisture level, linear responses of six PAHs were ranging from 1 to 20000 ng g⁻1 with determination coefficients greater than 0.99. Limits of detection (LODs) were over the ranges of 0.1-1 ng g-1. The RSDs for intra-fiber and inter-fiber analyses were obtained 2.2-6.6% and 5.2-11.6%, respectively. Relative recoveries values for real soil samples were found to be 91.1-110.2%. The results showed lower cost and higher extraction efficiency for the Zn-MOF/COF fiber, compared with commercial and homemade adsorbents.

Facile synthesis of bimetallic ACF/CC@FeOCl-Cu composite cathode for efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole at neutral pH by a flow-through heterogeneous electro-Fenton process

Flow-through heterogeneous electro-Fenton (FHEF) process shows a broad prospect for refractory organic pollutants removal. However, maintaining a long-term service life of higher catalytic cathode is crucial for the development of cathode materials, especially for iron-functionalized cathode operated under harsh conditions. In this study, a novel bimetallic CC@FeOCl-Cu composite was synthesized through one-step calcination, coupled with a series of microstructure characterization methodology, including XRD, SEM-EDS, XPS, and FTIR. The superior catalytic activity of CC@FeOCl-Cu could be ascribed to Fe-Cu synergy and better dispersion of FeOCl nanosheets. With the optimal Cu:Fe ratio of 1:60, the bifunctional ACF/CC@FeOCl-Cu cathode was employed in FHEF process, exhibiting an outstanding performance for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal over a wide pH range (3.0-9.0). Comparison of experimental results indicated that the ACF/CC@FeOCl-Cu-FHEF process showed higher performance than ACF/CC@FeOCl-FHEF and homogeneous EF processes. The average SMX removal efficiency was 98% and TOC removal efficiency was more than 57% even after 10 cycles. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance test confirmed that •OH was the primary active species. More •OH was generated in the ACF/CC@FeOCl-Cu-FHEF process because the doping of Cu could enhance catalytic activity of cathode. In addition, the satisfactory performance could be observed in the ACF/CC@FeOCl-Cu-FHEF process for the treatment of real landfill leachate, indicating its potential for practical application in wastewater treatment.

Electrochemical reduction of wastewater by non-noble metal cathodes: From terminal purification to upcycling recovery

A shift beyond conventional environmental remediation to a sustainable pollutant upgrading conversion is extremely desirable due to the rising demand for resources and widespread chemical contamination. Electrochemical reduction processes (ERPs) have drawn considerable attention in recent years in the fields of oxyanion reduction, metal recovery, detoxification and high-value conversion of halogenated organics and benzenes. ERPs also have the potential to address the inherent limitations of conventional chemical reduction technologies in terms of hydrogen and noble metal requirements. Fundamentally, mechanisms of ERPs can be categorized into three main pathways: direct electron transfer, atomic hydrogen mediation, and electrode redox pairs. Furthermore, this review consolidates state-of-the-art non-noble metal cathodes and their performance comparable to noble metals (e.g., Pd, Pt) in electrochemical reduction of inorganic/organic pollutants. To overview the research trends of ERPs, we innovatively sort out the relationship between the electrochemical reduction rate, the charge of the pollutant, and the number of electron transfers based on the statistical analysis. And we propose potential countermeasures of pulsed electrocatalysis and flow mode enhancement for the bottlenecks in electron injection and mass transfer for electronegative pollutant reduction. We conclude by discussing the gaps in the scientific and engineering level of ERPs, and envisage that ERPs can be a low-carbon pathway for industrial wastewater detoxification and valorization.

Functional Carbon Capsules Supporting Ruthenium Nanoclusters for Efficient Electrocatalytic 99 TcO4 - /ReO4 - Removal from Acidic and Alkaline Nuclear Wastes

The selective removal of the β-emitting pertechnetate ion (99 TcO4 - ) from nuclear waste streams is technically challenging. Herein, a practical approach is proposed for the selective removal of 99 TcO4 - (or its surrogate ReO4 - ) under extreme conditions of high acidity, alkalinity, ionic strength, and radiation field. Hollow porous N-doped carbon capsules loaded with ruthenium clusters (Ru@HNCC) are first prepared, then modified with a cationic polymeric network (R) containing imidazolium-N+ units (Ru@HNCC-R) for selective 99 TcO4 - and ReO4 - binding. The Ru@HNCC-R capsules offer high binding affinities for 99 TcO4 - /ReO4 - under wide-ranging conditions. An electrochemical redox process then transforms adsorbed ReO4 - to bulk ReO3 , delivering record-high removal capacities, fast kinetics, and excellent long-term durability for removing ReO4 - (as a proxy for 99 TcO4 - ) in a 3 m HNO3 , simulated nuclear waste-Hanford melter recycle stream and an alkaline high-level waste stream (HLW) at the U.S. Savannah River Site (SRS). In situ Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses showed that adsorbed Re(VII) is electrocatalytically reduced on Ru sites to a Re(IV)O2 intermediate, which can then be re-oxidized to insoluble Re(VI)O3 for facile collection. This approach overcomes many of the challenges associated with the selective separation and removal of 99 TcO4 - /ReO4 - under extreme conditions, offering new vistas for nuclear waste management and environmental remediation.

Non-noble-metal TiC-nanoparticle-promoted charge separation and photocatalytic degradation performance on Bi2O3 microrods: degradation pathway and mechanism investigation

In the present work, a promising binary TiC/Bi2O3 photocatalyst was obtained via a simple hydrothermal route. In the photodegradation experiment of acid orange 7 (AO7) and tetracycline (TC) irradiated by simulated sunlight, the attachment of TiC nanoparticles on the Bi2O3 microrods leads to an obvious improvement in the photocatalytic removal properties of the Bi2O3 microrods. The optimal removal efficiency of AO7 was achieved by the 7.5%TiC/Bi2O3 sample, which results in about 91.5% dye removal within 75 min of reaction. Meanwhile, the 7.5%TiC/Bi2O3 sample also exhibits favorable photodegradation performance for the degradation of TC, leading to about ∼76.9% TC being degraded after 75 min of irradiation. More importantly, the degradation pathways of AO7 and toxicity analysis of the intermediate products were performed based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry detection and theoretical simulation. The superior photocatalytic behavior of the TiC/Bi2O3 composite is attributed to the effective separation and migration of photoexcited electrons and holes in the heterojunction, where the TiC nanoparticles act as an acceptor of photoexcited electrons.

A multifunctional recyclable adsorbent based on engineered MIL-125 (Ti) magnetic mesoporous composite for the effective removal of pathogens

The elimination of pathogenic bacteria from water sources is currently crucial for obtaining drinkable water. Therefore, the development of platforms with the ability to interact with pathogens and remove them is a potential future tool for medicine, food and water safety. In this work, we have grafted a layer of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) on Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanospheres for the removal of multiple pathogenic bacteria from water. The synthesized Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) nano adsorbent was characterized by FE-SEM, HR-TEM, FT-IR, XRD, BET surface analysis, magnetization tests, respectively, which illustrated its well-defined core-shell structure and magnetic behaviour. The prepared magnetic-MOF composite sorbent was attractive towards capturing a wide range of pathogens (S. typhimurium, S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae) under experimental conditions. Influence factors such as adsorbent dosage, bacterial concentration, pH and incubation time were optimized for enhanced bacterial capture. The application of an external magnetic field removed Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) nano adsorbent from the solution along with sweeping the attached pathogenic bacteria. The non-specific removal efficiency of S. typhimurium for magnetic MOF composite was 96.58%, while it was only 46.81% with Fe3O4@SiO2 particles. For specific removal, 97.58% of S. typhimurium could be removed selectively from a mixture with monoclonal anti- Salmonella antibody conjugated magnetic MOF at a lower concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. The developed nano adsorbent may find great potential in microbiology applications and water remediation.

Fundamental Perspectives on the Electrochemical Water Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks

HIGHLIGHTS

The recent development and implementation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based materials in electrochemical water applications are reviewed. The critical factors that affect the performances of MOFs in the electrochemical reactions, sensing, and separations are highlighted. Advanced tools, such as pair distribution function analysis, are playing critical roles in unraveling the functioning mechanisms, including local structures and nanoconfined interactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a family of highly porous materials possessing huge surface areas and feasible chemical tunability, are emerging as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with energy-water systems, such as water scarcity issues. In this contribution, the roles of MOFs are highlighted in electrochemical-based water applications (i.e., reactions, sensing, and separations), where MOF-based functional materials exhibit outstanding performances in detecting/removing pollutants, recovering resources, and harvesting energies from different water sources. Compared with the pristine MOFs, the efficiency and/or selectivity can be further enhanced via rational structural modulation of MOFs (e.g., partial metal substitution) or integration of MOFs with other functional materials (e.g., metal clusters and reduced graphene oxide). Several key factors/properties that affect the performances of MOF-based materials are also reviewed, including electronic structures, nanoconfined effects, stability, conductivity, and atomic structures. The advancement in the fundamental understanding of these key factors is expected to shed light on the functioning mechanisms of MOFs (e.g., charge transfer pathways and guest-host interactions), which will subsequently accelerate the integration of precisely designed MOFs into electrochemical architectures to achieve highly effective water remediation with optimized selectivity and long-term stability.

Metal-free electro-Fenton degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid with efficient ordered mesoporous carbon catalyst

Heterogeneous electro-Fenton with in situ generated H₂O₂ and ^•OH is a cost-effective method for the degradation of refractory organic pollutants, in which the catalyst is an important factor affecting its degradation performance. Metal-free catalysts can avoid the potential risk of metal dissolution. However, it remains great challenge to develop efficient metal-free catalyst for electro-Fenton. Herein, ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) was designed as a bifunctional catalyst for efficient H₂O₂ and ^•OH generation in electro-Fenton. The electro-Fenton system showed fast perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation with kinetics constant of 1.26 h^-1 and high total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of 84.0 % after 3 h reaction. The ^•OH was the main species responsible for PFOA degradation. Its generation was promoted by the abundant oxygen functional groups such as C-O-C and the nano-confinement effect of mesoporous channels on OMCs. This study indicated that OMC is an efficient catalyst for metal-free electro-Fenton system.

Synergistic effect of intercalation and EDLC electrosorption of 2D/3D interconnected architectures to boost capacitive deionization for water desalination via MoSe2/mesoporous carbon hollow spheres

Transition-metal dichalcogenides can be used for capacitive deionization (CDI) via pseudocapacitive ion intercalation/de-intercalation due to their unique two-dimensional (2D) laminar structure. MoS₂ has been extensively studied in the hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI), but the desalination performance of MoS₂-based electrodes remains only 20-35 mg g^-1 on average. Benefiting from the higher conductivity and larger layer spacing of MoSe₂ than MoS₂, it is expected that MoSe₂ would exhibit a superior HCDI desalination performance. Herein, for the first time, we explored the use of MoSe₂ in HCDI and synthesized a novel MoSe₂/MCHS composite material by utilizing mesoporous carbon hollow spheres (MCHS) as the growth substrate to inhibit the aggregation and improve the conductivity of MoSe₂. The as-obtained MoSe₂/MCHS presented unique 2D/3D interconnected architectures, allowing for synergistic effects of intercalation pseudocapacitance and electrical double layer capacitance (EDLC). An excellent salt adsorption capacity of 45.25 mg g^- 1 and a high salt removal rate of 7.75 mg g^- 1 min^-1 were achieved in 500 mg L^- 1 NaCl feed solution at an applied voltage of 1.2 V in batch-mode tests. Moreover, the MoSe₂/MCHS electrode exhibited outstanding cycling performance and low energy consumption, making it suitable for practical applications. This work demonstrates the promising application of selenides in CDI and provides new insights for ration design of high-performance composite electrode materials.

Advanced growth of 2D MXene for electrochemical sensors

Over the last few years, electroanalysis has made significant advancements, particularly in developing electrochemical sensors. Electrochemical sensors generally include emerging Photoelectrochemical and Electrochemiluminescence sensors, which combine optical techniques and traditional electrochemical bio/non-biosensors. Numerous EC-detecting methods have also been designed for commercial applications to detect biological and non-biological markers for various diseases. Analytical applications have recently focused significantly on one of the novel nanomaterials, the MXene. This material is being extensively investigated for applications in electrochemical sensors due to its unique mechanical, electronic, optical, active functional groups and thermal characteristics. This study extensively discusses the salient features of MXene-based electrochemical sensors, photoelectrochemical sensors, enzyme-based biosensors, immunosensors, aptasensors, electrochemiluminescence sensors, and electrochemical non-biosensors. In addition, their performance in detecting various substances and contaminants is thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects the MXene-based electrochemical sensors are elaborated.

Tuning Fe3O4 for sustainable cathodic heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalysis by acetylated chitosan

Peroxidase-like catalysts are safe and low-cost candidates to tackle the dilemma in constructing sustainable cathodic heterogeneous electro-Fenton (CHEF) catalysts for water purification, but the elusive structure-property relationship of enzyme-like catalysts constitutes a pressing challenge for the advancement of CHEF processes in practically relevant water and wastewater treatment. Herein, we probe the origins of catalytic efficiency in the CHEF process by artificially tailoring the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4 through a series of acetylated chitosan-based hydrogels, which serve as ecofriendly alternatives to traditional carbon shells. The optimized acetylated chitosan wrapping Fe3O4 hydrogel on the cathode shows an impressive activity and stability in CHEF process, overcoming the complicated and environmentally unfavored procedures in the electro-Fenton-related processes. Structural characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the amide group in chitosan can modulate the intrinsic redox capacity of surficial Fe sites on Fe3O4 toward CHEF catalysis via the neutral hydrogen bond. This work provides a sustainable path and molecule-level insight for the rational design of high-efficiency CHEF catalysts and beyond.

Degradation of lomefloxacin by MoS2/MIL-53(Fe, Cu) catalyst in heterogeneous electro-Fenton process

A novel heterogeneous catalyst named MoS₂/MIL-53(Fe, Cu) (MMFC) was prepared by hydrothermal method and applied in a heterogeneous electro-Fenton (hetero-EF) system for lomefloxacin (LOM) degradation in this work. Under the optimal conditions of current density 3 mA/cm², catalyst dosage 0.100 g/L, and initial pH 6, 93.5% LOM (2 mg/L) removal efficiency was achieved in the MMFC hetero-EF system within 60 min, indicating an obvious improvement compared with the MIL-53(Fe, Cu) hetero-EF system. The good catalytic activity was attributed to more effective active sites of the catalyst and the conversion of Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Cu(I)/Cu(II) promoted by Mo(IV) in MoS₂, which could be inferred by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations. The reusability and stability of MMFC were explored based on five cyclic experiments, and the average degradation efficiency reached 73.9%. Furthermore, the hetero-EF system could achieve the total removal of moxifloxacin and tetracycline within 6 min and 40 min, respectively. Quenching experiments revealed that the hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the main reactive radicals while superoxide radicals (·O₂^-) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) played a certain part in LOM degradation. Finally, the possible mechanism of the hetero-EF process and LOM degradation pathways were proposed, including substitution, elimination, and cleavage of ring structures. Accounting for good catalytic performance, low preparation cost, and satisfactory versatility, the MMFC exhibited good potential to work as a hetero-EF catalyst for wastewater treatment.

Ferrate modified carbon felt as excellent heterogeneous electro-Fenton cathode for chloramphenicol degradation

In this study, a novel and efficient heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) process with a potassium ferrate (K₂FeO₄) modified carbon felt (Fe-CF) cathode was developed for chloramphenicol (CAP) removal. The catalytic activity was assessed by the comparison of different systems and the effects of multiple operating parameters (K₂FeO₄ dosage, initial solution pH, applied current) and co-existing constituents. Results indicated that the Fe-CF cathode exhibited excellent performance for CAP degradation (almost 100% removal efficiency within 60 min) over a wide range of pH (pH 3-9) during heterogeneous EF ascribed to the synergistic effect of embedded iron species and porous graphitic carbon structure and effective utilization of the in-situ generated H₂O₂. Moreover, the Fe-CF cathode possessed good recyclability with low metal leaching (98.2% CAP removal efficiency after reused for 5 times) and outstanding real water application performance. The ∙OH and O₂∙^- were responsible for CAP degradation, while ∙OH played a main role. Moreover, the toxicity evaluation by E. coli growth experiments demonstrated an efficient toxicity reduction in this system. Overall, a novel heterogeneous EF functional cathode with superior performance was fabricated via a green, low-cost one-step method, which shows promising application potential for actual wastewater treatment.

Advanced oxidation processes for the elimination of microplastics from aqueous systems: Assessment of efficiency, perspectives and limitations

Microplastics act as a vector of heavy metals, organic pollutants, pathogens and resistance genes in the environment further aggravate the pollution of plastics. The conventional wastewater/water treatment processes can physically capture and remove most of microplastics, but the success rates varies. How to quickly remove a large amount of microplastics from aqueous system is a key research topic at present. Recently, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as a green elimination strategy has attracted attention because of its effective elimination, strong destruction and safety. The molecular chain of microplastics can be gradually degraded into small molecular organics until H₂O and CO₂ by strong oxidizing free radical produced by AOPs. Unfortunately, problematically, the elimination of microplastics in aqueous system by AOPs is recently carried out on a laboratory scale. The application and implementation of this strategy are restricted by long reaction time, low liquid phase degradation efficiency and the formation of nanoplastics. Generally, the technology is still in its infancy, and most studies are carried out under laboratory conditions. The degradation of microplastics in aqueous system also needs appropriate conditions, but it is not always feasible under field conditions in AOPs. Although AOPs can be used as a green degradation technology to eliminate microplastics in aqueous systems in theory, it still needs to be furtherly explored in practical application. Consequently, before AOPs as a green elimination strategy is successfully applied to the effective remove microplastics, more in-depth research is still required, such as the setting from single condition to complex environment, the transfer from laboratory scale to field scale, and systematic toxicity evaluation of corresponding products.

Superficial chiral etching on achiral metal-organic framework for HPLC enantioseparations

Chiral metal-organic frameworks have shown great potential in enantioselective separation and asymmetric catalysis due to their diverse and adjustable structures with abundant chiral recognition sites. Herein, a new chiral postsynthetic modification was used for preparing an achiral@chiral metal-organic frameworks core-shell composite [Cu₃ (Btc)₂ ]@[Cu₂ ((+)-Cam)₂ Dabco] by a superficial chiral etching method. The [Cu₃ (Btc)₂ ]@[Cu₂ ((+)-Cam)₂ Dabco] composite was utilized as a novel chiral stationary phase for HPLC enantioseparation. Various racemates were separated on the [Cu₃ (Btc)₂ ]@[Cu₂ ((+)-Cam)₂ Dabco]-packed column (column A). It exhibited good chiral resolving ability toward many different kinds of racemates, especially chiral drugs. Among them, the highest resolution value for 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-ethanediol reach 2.70. The relative standard deviations of retention time and peak area for repeated separation of 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-ethanol were 0.45 % and 0.81 %, respectively. Compared with the resolution ability of [Cu₂ ((+)-Cam)₂ Dabco]-packed column (column B), the column A shows higher column efficiency and better separation performance than those of column B. The results indicated that the [Cu₃ (Btc)₂ ]@[Cu₂ ((+)-Cam)₂ Dabco] as stationary phase can greatly improve the column efficiency and chiral resolution ability of chiral metal-organic frameworks, which demonstrated that the superficial chiral etching as an economic and efficient strategy opens up a new way for the application of metal-organic frameworks. Cu-based MOF-derived architecture with Cu/Cu2O nanospheres anchored on porous carbon nanosheets for efficient capacitive deionization

The design of high-performance electrode materials with excellent desalination ability has always been a research goal for efficient capacitive deionization (CDI). Herein, a hybrid architecture with Cu/Cu₂O nanospheres anchored on porous carbon nanosheets (Cu/Cu₂O/C) was first synthesized by pyrolyzing a two-dimensional (2D) Cu-based metal-organic framework and then evaluated as a cathode for hybrid CDI. The as-prepared Cu/Cu₂O/C exhibits a hierarchically porous structure with a high specific surface area of 305 m² g^-1 and large pore volume of 0.55 cm³ g^-1, which is favorable to accelerating ion migration and diffusion. The porous carbon nanosheet matrix with enhanced conductivity will facilitate the Faradaic reactions of Cu/Cu₂O nanospheres during the desalination process. The Cu/Cu₂O/C hybrid architecture displays a high specific capacitance of 142.5 F g^-1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s^-1 in 1 M NaCl solution. The hybrid CDI constructed using the Cu/Cu₂O/C cathode and a commercial activated carbon anode exhibits a high desalination capacity of 16.4 mg g^-1 at an operation voltage of 1.2 V in 500 mg L^-1 NaCl solution. Additionally, the hybrid CDI exhibits a good cycling stability with 18.3% decay in the desalination capacity after 20 electrosorption-desorption cycles. Thus, the Cu/Cu₂O/C composite is expected to be a promising cathode material for hybrid CDI.

Reconstruction of Electronic Structure of MOF-525 via Metalloporphyrin for Enhanced Photoelectro-Fenton Process

Photoelectro-Fenton (PEF) process can continuously promote the occurrence of Fenton reaction and the generation of active species, which is an advanced oxidation technology for pollutant degradation. However, the lack of bifunctional catalysts restricts the development of PEF technology. In this study, the electronic rearrangement MOF-525 modified by metalloporphyrin (named MOF-525-Fe/Zr) was prepared, to load on the carbon felt as a novel cathode catalyst, which is used in PEF process. A series of characterization and photoelectric chemical properties tests combined with DFT calculation showed that the modification of MOF-525 could not only have the large specific surface area and multistage pore structure but also co-stimulate the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and ligand-to-cluster charge transfer (LCCT) by photoelectric synergy. These charge transitions provide periodic electron donor-acceptor conduction paths in MOF-525-Fe/Zr, which can improve the active species formation and transfer efficiency. Owing to their favorable pore and electronic structure as well as stability, MOF-525-Fe/Zr shows great promise for the application in the catalytic process of PEF. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation was enhanced by MOF-525-Fe/Zr with the TOC removal rate above 75% both in river water and tap water. Finally, the reasonable pathway of PEF catalytic degradation of SMX was proposed by HPLC-MS analysis. In conclusion, this study provides a new idea for reconstructing the electronic structure of MOFs catalyst and broadening the practical application of PEF technology.

Carbon nanotube-based materials for persulfate activation to degrade organic contaminants: Properties, mechanisms and modification insights

Removal of harmful organic matters from environment has great environmental significance. Carbon nanotube (CNT) materials and their composites have been demonstrated to possess excellent catalytic activity towards persulfate (PS) activation for the degradation of organic contaminants. Herein, detailed information concerning the function, modification methods and relevant mechanisms of CNT in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) for organic pollutant elimination has been reviewed. The activation mechanism of PS by CNT might include radical and nonradical pathways and their synergistic effects. The common strategies to improve the stability and catalytic capability of CNT-based materials have also been put forward. Furthermore, their practical application potential compared with other catalysts has been described. Finally, the challenges faced by CNT in practical application are clearly highlighted. This review should be of value in promoting the research of PS activation by CNT-based materials for degradation of organic pollutants and the corresponding practical applications.

Morphologically Controlled Metal-Organic Framework-Derived FeNi Oxides for Efficient Water Oxidation

The complex oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is recognized as the most studied and explored electrochemical conversion, which plays a crucial role in energy-related applications. In this work, a series of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived FeNi oxides from a barrel-shaped Ni-based BMM-10 precursor are conveniently obtained to show an excellent OER performance. Under mild Fe(III) etching, a type of core-shell Fe_0.5-BMM-10 can be well preserved and the coordination bond of the middle frame structure is decomposed. Furthermore, the Fe_x-BMM-10-T series is successfully synthesized with a well-preserved morphology compared to precursors after direct oxidation. Finally, followed by initial electrochemical activation, the decomposition of FeNi oxides generates active Fe-doped nickel oxyhydroxides for efficient water oxidation. The improved OER performance stems from the high specific surface area and abundant exposed active centers, as well as the significant synergistic effect between iron and nickel, which is further verified by the theoretical calculation. This approach can be extended to precisely adjust the morphology of MOFs and their derivatives that can result in superior electrocatalytic properties in terms of energy conversion and storage applications.
