Abstract
To date, developing crystalline proton-conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with an inherent excellent proton-conducting ability and structural stability has been a critical priority in addressing the technologies required for sustainable development and energy storage. Bearing this in mind, a multifunctional organic ligand, 3,4-dimethylthiophene[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2DTD), was employed to generate two exceptionally stable three-dimensional porous Zr/Hf MOFs, [Zr6O4(OH)4(DTD)6]·5DMF·H2O (Zr-DTD) and [Hf6O4(OH)4(DTD)6]·4DMF·H2O (Hf-DTD), using solvothermal means. The presence of Zr6 or Hf6 nodes, strong Zr/Hf-O bonds, the electrical influence of the methyl group, and the steric effect of the thiophene unit all contribute to their structural stability throughout a wide pH range as well as in water. Their proton conductivity was fully examined at various relative humidities (RHs) and temperatures. Creating intricate and rich H-bonded networks between the guest water molecules, coordination solvent molecules, thiophene-S, -COOH, and -OH units within the framework assisted proton transfer. As a result, both MOFs manifest the maximum proton conductivity of 0.67 × 10-2 and 4.85 × 10-3 S·cm-1 under 98% RH/100 °C, making them the top-performing proton-conductive Zr/Hf-MOFs. Finally, by combining structural characteristics and activation energies, potential proton conduction pathways for the two MOFs were identified.

Abstract
Solid electrolyte materials with high structural stability and excellent proton conductivity (σ) have long been a popular and challenging research topic in the fuel cell field. This problem can be addressed because of the crystalline metal-organic frameworks' (MOFs') high structural stability, adjustable framework composition, and dense H-bonded networks. Herein, one highly stable Sr(II) MOF, {[Sr(H2tmidc)2(H2O)3]·4H2O}n (1) (H3tmidc = 2-(1H-tetrazolium-1-methylene)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) was successfully fabricated, which was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electrochemically examined by the AC impedance determination. The results demonstrated that the σ of the compound manifested a positive dependence on temperature and humidity, and the optimal proton conductivity is as high as 1.22 × 10-2 S/cm under 100 °C and 98% relative humidity, which is at the forefront of reported MOFs with ultrahigh σ. The analysis of the proton conduction mechanism reveals that numerous tetrazolium groups, carboxyl groups, coordination, and crystallization water molecules in the framework are responsible for the high efficiency of proton transport. This work offers a fresh perspective on how to create novel crystalline proton conductive materials.

Abstract
Although crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained a great deal of interest in the field of proton conduction in recent years, the low stability and poor proton conductivity (σ) of some MOFs have hindered their future applications. As a result, resolving the issues listed above must be prioritized. Due to their exceptional structural stability, MOFs with ferrocene groups that exhibit particular physical and chemical properties have drawn a lot of attention. This study describes the effective preparation of a set of three-dimensional ferrocene-based MOFs, MIL-53-FcDC-Al/Ga and CAU-43, containing both main group metals and 1,1'-ferrocene dicarboxylic acid (H2FcDC). Multiple measurements, including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared (IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confirmed that the addition of ferrocene groups enhanced the thermal, water, and acid-base stabilities of the three MOFs. Consequently, their proton-conductive behaviors were meticulously measured utilizing the AC impedance approach, and their best proton conductivities are 5.20 × 10-3, 2.31 × 10-3, and 1.72 × 10-4 S/cm at 100 °C/98% relative humidity (RH), respectively. Excitingly, MIL-53-FcDC-Al/Ga demonstrated an extraordinarily ultrahigh σ of above 10-4 S·cm-1 under 30 °C/98% RH. Using data from structural analysis, PXRD, SEM, thermogravimetry (TG), and activation energy, their proton transport mechanisms were thoroughly examined. The fact that these MOFs are notably easy to assemble, inexpensive, toxin-free, and stable will increase the range of practical uses for them.

Abstract
Currently, it is still a challenge to directly achieve highly stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with superior proton conductivity solely through the exquisite design of ligands and the attentive selection of metal nodes. Inspired by this, we are intrigued by a multifunctional dicarboxylate ligand including dithiophene groups, 3,4-dimethylthieno[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2DTD), and lanthanide ions with distinct coordination topologies. Successfully, four isostructural three-dimensional lanthanide(III)-based MOFs, [Ln2(DTD)3(DEF)4]·DEF·6H2O [LnIII = TbIII (Tb-MOF), EuIII (Eu-MOF), SmIII (Sm-MOF), and DyIII (Dy-MOF)], were solvothermally prepared, in which the effective proton transport will be provided by the coordinated or free solvent molecules, the crystalline water molecules, and the framework components, as well as a large number of highly electronegative S and O atoms. As expected, the four Ln-MOFs demonstrated the highest proton conductivities (σ) being 0.54 × 10-3, 3.75 × 10-3, 1.28 × 10-3, and 1.92 × 10-3 S·cm-1 for the four MOFs, respectively, at 100 °C/98% relative humidity (RH). Excitingly, Dy-MOF demonstrated an extraordinary ultrahigh σ of 1 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 30 °C/98% RH. Additionally, the plausible proton transport mechanisms were emphasized.

Abstract
Indium-based metal-organic frameworks (In-MOFs) have now become an attractive class of porous solids in materials science and electrochemistry due to their diverse structures and promising applications. In the field of proton conduction, to find more crystalline MOFs with splendid proton-conductive properties, herein, five three-dimensional isostructural In-MOFs, MIL-68-In or MIL-68-In-X (X = NH2, OH, Br, or NO2) using terephthalic acid (H2BDC) or functionalized terephthalic acids (H2BDC-X) as multifunctional linkages were efficiently fabricated. First, the outstanding structural stability of the five MOFs, including thermal and water stability, was verified by thermal analysis and powder X-ray diffraction. Subsequently, the H2O-mediated proton conductivities (σ) were fully assessed and compared. Notably, their σ evinced a significant positive correlation between the temperature or relative humidity (RH) and varied with the functional groups on the organic ligands. Impressively, their highest σ values are up to 10-3-10-4 S/cm (100 °C/98% RH) and change in this order: MIL-68-In-OH (1.72 × 10-3 S/cm) > MIL-68-In-NH2 (1.70 × 10-3 S/cm) > MIL-68-In-NO2 (4.47 × 10-4 S/cm) > MIL-68-In-Br (4.11 × 10-4 S/cm) > MIL-68-In (2.37 × 10-4 S/cm). Finally, the computed activation energy values under 98 or 68% RHs are assessed, and the related proton conduction mechanisms are speculated. Moreover, after electrochemical testing, these MOFs illustrate remarkable structural rigidity, laying a meritorious material foundation for future applications.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with permanent porosity and multifunctional catalytic sites constructed by two or more organic ligands are regarded as effective heterogeneous catalysts to improve certain organic catalytic reactions. In this work, a pillared-layer Zn-MOF (MOF-LS10) was constructed by 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine (H4TCPP) and 2,5-di(pyridin-4-yl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (DPTZTZ). After activation, MOF-LS10 has a permanent porosity and moderate CO2 adsorption capacity. The introduction of thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TZTZ), a photoactive unit, into the framework endows MOF-LS10 with excellent photocatalytic performance. MOF-LS10 can not only efficiently catalyze the formation of cyclic carbonates from CO2 and epoxide substrates under mild conditions but also can photocatalyze benzylamine coupling at room temperature. In addition, we used another two ligands 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (H4BTEB) and 1,4-di(pyridin-4-yl)benzene (DPB) to synthesize MOF-LS11 (constructed by BTEB4- and DPTZTZ) and MOF-LS12 (constructed by TCPP4- and DPB) in order to explore whether the pyrazine structural unit and the TZTZ structural unit synergistically catalyze the reaction. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum demonstrates that the superoxide radical (·O2-), generated by electron transfer from the MOF excited by light to the oxidant, is the main active substance of oxidation. The design and synthesis of MOF-LS10 provide an effective synthetic strategy for the development of versatile heterogeneous catalysts for various organic reactions and a wide range of substrates.

Abstract
Exploitation of solid-state proton-conducting materials with high anhydrous proton conductivity from subzero temperature (<273 K) to moderate temperature (>353 K) is a great challenge. Here, Brönsted acid-dopped zirconium-organic xerogels (Zr/BTC-xerogels) are prepared for anhydrous proton conduction from subzero to moderate temperature. Abundant acid sites and strong H-bonding interactions make the CF3SO3H (TMSA)-introduced xerogel gain high proton conductivity from 9.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 (253 K) to 1.40 × 10-2 S cm-1 (363 K) under anhydrous conditions, which are in the leading level. This provides a new possibility to develop wide-operating-temperature conductors.

Abstract
Due to the lack of effective synthetic strategies, the preparation of chemically stable chiral Ag(I) cluster-based materials for assembly remains challenging. Here, we have developed an approach to synthesize three pairs of chiral Ln-Ag(I) cluster-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) named l-LnAg5-3D (Ln = Gd for 1-L, Eu for 2-L, and Tb for 3-L) and d-LnAg5-3D (Ln = Gd for 1-D, Eu for 2-D, and Tb for 3-D) by employing a chiral Ag(I) cluster ({Ag5S6}) as the node and Ln3+ ion as the inorganic linker. Structural analysis revealed that the chiral ligands induced chirality through the entire structure, resulting in a chiral helix arrangement of the C3-symmetric chiral {Ag5S6} nodes and Ln3+ ions. These compounds showed high solvent stability in various polar organic solvents. The solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra of compounds l-LnAg5-3D and d-LnAg5-3D exhibited obvious mirror symmetrical peaks. The emission spectra in the solid state revealed that compound 1-L only exhibited the emission peak of {Ag5S6}, while compounds 2-L and 3-L exhibited overlapping peaks of Ln3+ and {Ag5S6} at different excitation wavelengths. This demonstrates the tunable photoluminescence from {Ag5S6} to Ln3+ by introducing different Ln3+ ions and manipulating the excitation wavelengths. The study underscores the enhanced stability of Ag(I) cluster-based MOFs achieved through the incorporation of Ln3+ ions and establishes chiral Ln-Ag(I) cluster-based MOFs as promising candidates for advanced materials with tunable photoluminescence.

Abstract
Proton exchange membranes (PEMs), especially for work under intermediate temperatures (100-200 °C), have attracted great interest because of the high CO toleration and facial water management of the corresponding proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Traditional polymer PEMs faced challenges of low stability and proton carrier leaking. Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are promising to overcome these issues contributed by nanometer-sized channels. Herein we summarized the recent development of MOF/COF-based intermediate-temperature proton conductors. The strategies of framework engineering and pore impregnation were introduced in detail for raising proton conductivity. The proton-conducting mechanism was described as well. This spotlight will provide new insight into the fabrication of MOF/COF proton conductors under intermediate-temperature and anhydrous conditions.

Abstract
Recently, researchers have focused on preparing and studying proton exchange membranes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are candidates for composite membrane fillers due to their high crystallinity and structural characteristics, and Hf-based MOFs have attracted our attention with their high porosity and high stability. Therefore, in this study, Hf-based MOFs were doped into a cost-effective chitosan matrix as fillers to fabricate composite films having excellent proton conductivity (σ). First, the nanoscale MOFs Hf-UiO-66-(OH)2 (1) and Hf-UiO-66-NH2 (2) were chemically modified by a ligand design strategy to obtain SA-1 and CBD-2 bearing free -COOH units. The proton conductivities of SA-1 and CBD-2 under optimal test conditions reached 1.23 × 10-2 and 0.71 × 10-2 S cm-1. After that, we prepared composite membranes CS/SA-1 and CS/CBD-2 by the casting method; tests revealed that the introduction of MOFs improved the stabilities and σ values of the membranes, and their best σ could reach above 10-2 S cm-1 under 100 °C/98% RH. Further structural characterization and activation energy calculation revealed the conductive mechanism of the composite films. This investigation not only proposes a novel chemical modification method for optimizing the σ of MOFs but also promotes the development of MOF-doped composite membranes and provides a basis for future applications of MOFs in fuel cells.

Abstract
With the gradual progress of research on proton-conducting metal-organic framework (MOFs), it has become a challenging task to find MOF materials that are easy to prepare and have low toxicity, high stability, and splendid proton conductivity. With the abovementioned objectives in mind, we selected the non-toxic organic ligand 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and the low toxic quadrivalent metals zirconium(IV) or hafnium(IV) as starting materials and successfully obtained 2 three-dimensional porous MOFs, [M6O4(OH)4(FDC)4(OH)4(H2O)4] [M = ZrIV (1) and HfIV (2)], with ultrahigh water stability using a rapid and green synthesis approach. Their proton conductive ability is remarkable, thanks to the large number of Lewis acidic sites contained in their porous frameworks and the abundant H-bonding network, hydroxyl groups, as well as coordination and crystalline water molecules. The positive correlation of their proton conductivity with relative humidity (RH) and the temperature was observed. Notably, their optimized proton conductivities are 2.80 × 10-3 S·cm-1 of 1 and 3.38 × 10-3 S·cm-1 of 2 under 100 °C/98% RH, which are at the forefront of Zr(IV)/Hf(IV) MOFs with prominent proton conductivity. Logically, their framework features, nitrogen/water adsorption/desorption data, and activation energy values are integrated to deduce their proton conductivity and conducting mechanism differences.

Abstract
Attracted by the exceptional structural rigidity and inherent porous structures of the Hf-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), we adopted a rapid synthesis approach to preparing three nanoscale MOFs, Hf-UiO-66 (1), Hf-UiO-66-(OH)2 (2), and Hf-UiO-66-NH2 (3), and systematically explored the water-assisted proton conductivities of the original ones and the post-modified products. Interestingly, the proton conductivities (σ) of all three MOFs exhibit significant temperature and humidity dependence. At 98% RH and 100 °C, their optimal σ values can reach up to 10-3 S·cm-1. Consequently, imidazole units are loaded into 1-3 to obtain related MOFs, Im@1, Im@2, and Im@3, and the σ values of the imidazole-loaded products are boosted to 10-2 S·cm-1. Note that these modifications not only do not change the frameworks of the pristine MOFs but also do not affect their high chemical and water stability. The proton-conductive mechanisms of these MOFs before and after modification have been thoroughly discussed based on structural analyses, N2 and H2O vapor adsorptions, and activation energy values. The excellent structural stability as well as the durability and stability of their proton conduction ability indicate that these MOFs can be used in the field of fuel cells and so on.

Abstract
In the fields of proton exchange membrane fuel cells as well as impedance recognition, molecular sieve, and biochemistry, the development of proton conductive materials is essential. The design and preparation of the next generation of proton conductive materials-crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with high proton conductivity and excellent water stability-are facing great challenges. Due to the large radius and high positive charge of lanthanides, they often interact with organic ligands to exhibit high coordination numbers and flexible coordination configurations, resulting in the higher stability of lanthanide-based MOFs (Ln-MOFs) than their transition metal analogues, especially regarding water stability. Therefore, Ln-MOFs have attracted considerable attention. This review offers a view of the latest progress of proton conductive Ln-MOFs, including synthesis strategy, structural characteristics, and advantages, proton conductivity, proton conductive mechanism, and applications. More importantly, by discussing structure-property relationships, we searched for and analyzed design techniques and directions of development of Ln-MOFs in the future. The latest progress of synthesis strategy, structural characteristics, proton conductive properties and mechanism and applications on Ln-MOFs.
