Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological surveys indicate an increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among children and adolescents worldwide. Due to rapid disease progression, severe long-term cardiorenal complications, a lack of effective treatment strategies, and substantial socioeconomic burdens, it has become an urgent public health issue that requires management and resolution. Adolescent T2DM differs from adult T2DM. Despite a significant increase in our understanding of youth-onset T2DM over the past two decades, the related review and evidence-based content remain limited. AIM To visualize the hotspots and trends in pediatric and adolescent T2DM research and to forecast their future research themes. METHODS This study utilized the terms "children", "adolescents", and "type 2 diabetes", retrieving relevant articles published between 1983 and 2023 from three citation databases within the Web of Science Core Collection (SCI, SSCI, ESCI). Utilizing CiteSpace and VoSviewer software, we analyze and visually represent the annual output of literature, countries involved, and participating institutions. This allows us to predict trends in this research field. Our analysis encompasses co-cited authors, journal overlays, citation overlays, time-zone views, keyword analysis, and reference analysis, etc. RESULTS A total of 9210 articles were included, and the annual publication volume in this field showed a steady growth trend. The United States had the highest number of publications and the highest H-index. The United States also had the most research institutions and the strongest research capacity. The global hot journals were primarily diabetes professional journals but also included journals related to nutrition, endocrinology, and metabolism. Keyword analysis showed that research related to endothelial dysfunction, exposure risk, cardiac metabolic risk, changes in gut microbiota, the impact on comorbidities and outcomes, etc., were emerging keywords. They have maintained their popularity in this field, suggesting that these areas have garnered significant research interest in recent years. CONCLUSION Pediatric and adolescent T2DM is increasingly drawing global attention, with genes, behaviors, environmental factors, and multisystemic interventions potentially emerging as future research hot spots.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of antidiabetic agents in the treatment of major depressive disorder and bipolar depression. METHODS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of antidiabetic agents in major depressive disorder or bipolar depression were searched in three electronic databases and three clinical trial registry websites from their inception up to October 2023. The differences in changes in the depression rating scale scores from baseline to endpoint or pre-defined sessions, response rate, remission rate, rate of side effects and dropout rate between antidiabetic agents and placebo were meta-analyzed. RESULTS Six RCTs involving 399 participants were included in the final meta-analysis, which did not find that antidiabetics outperformed the placebo in reducing depressive symptoms. The standardized mean difference (SMD) in the depression scores from baseline to endpoint was 0.25 (95% CI -0.1, 0.61). However, a subgroup analysis found a significant difference between antidiabetics and placebos in reducing depressive symptoms in Middle Eastern populations, with an SMD of 0.89 (95% CI 0.44, 1.34). CONCLUSIONS The current meta-analysis does not support the efficacy of antidiabetics being superior to the placebo in the treatment of unipolar and bipolar depression. However, a subgroup analysis indicates that patients from the Middle East may benefit from adding an antidiabetic medication to their ongoing medication(s) for their depression. Larger studies with good-quality study designs are warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Loss-of-control and overeating are common in adolescents with high body mass index (BMI). Mindfulness may affect negative affect, and both may relate to loss-of-control and overeating. Yet, there is limited understanding of these associations in adolescents' daily lives. METHODS Forty-five adolescents (77% female; Mage = 14.4 years, SDage = 1.7 years) with high weight (92% with BMI [kg/m2 ] ≥85th percentile for age/sex) provided daily, repeated measurements of mindfulness, negative affect, loss-of-control, and overeating for ~7 days (M = 5.6 days; range = 1-13). Multilevel mixed modeling was conducted to test within-person (intraindividual) and between-person (interindividual) associations for the same-day (concurrent) and next-day (time-ordered/prospective). RESULTS There were within-person and between-person associations of higher mindfulness with lower negative affect on the same-day and next-day. Greater between-person mindfulness related to lower odds of adolescents' loss-of-control occurrence (same-day) and conversely, more perceived control over eating (same-day and next-day). Greater within-person mindfulness related to less odds of next-day overeating. DISCUSSION Dynamic relations exist among mindfulness, negative affect, and eating in adolescents at-risk for excess weight gain. Mindfulness may be an important element to consider in loss-of-control and overeating. Future work using momentary-data within an experimental design would help disentangle the intraindividual effects of increasing mindfulness/decreasing negative affect on disordered eating. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Loss-of-control and overeating are common in teenagers with high weight. Greater mindfulness-present-moment, non-judgmental attention-and less negative emotions may relate to healthier eating, but we do not know how these processes play out in teenagers' daily lives. Addressing this knowledge gap, the current findings showed that greater daily mindfulness, but not negative affect, related to less loss-of-control/overeating, suggesting the importance of mindfulness for eating patterns in teenagers' daily lives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescent-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major public health concern of growing proportions. Prevention, therefore, is critical. Unfortunately, standard-of-care treatment for T2D prevention (e.g., exercise training) show insufficient effectiveness and do not address key modifiable barriers (e.g., depression symptoms) to exercise engagement. Depression symptoms are associated with both poorer physical fitness and greater insulin resistance, the key risk factor in adolescent-onset T2D. Thus, a targeted prevention approach that addresses depression symptoms in combination with exercise training may offer a novel approach to mitigating T2D risk. METHODS This manuscript describes the design and study protocol for a multi-site, four-arm randomized controlled trial comparing the efficacy of group cognitive-behavioral therapy, group exercise training, and their combinations for the targeted prevention of worsening insulin resistance in N = 300 adolescent females at-risk for T2D with BMI ≥85th percentile and elevated depression symptoms. All four intervention arms will run in parallel and meet weekly for 1 h per week for 6-week to 6-week segments (12 weeks total). Outcomes are assessed at baseline, 6-week mid-treatment, 12-week follow-up, and 1-year follow-up. RESULTS The primary outcome is insulin resistance. Key secondary outcomes include insulin sensitivity, cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, depression symptoms, and body measurements. CONCLUSION Study findings will guide the ideal sequencing of two brief T2D prevention interventions for ameliorating the course of insulin resistance and lessening T2D risk in vulnerable adolescents. These interventions will likely be cost-effective and scalable for dissemination, having the potential for significant public health impact on communities at risk for T2D.

Abstract
The incidence and prevalence of youth-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its complications are increasing worldwide. Youth-onset T2DM has been reported in all racial and ethnic groups, but Indigenous peoples and people of colour are disproportionately affected. People with youth-onset T2DM often have a more aggressive clinical course than those with adult-onset T2DM or those with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, the available treatment options for children and adolescents with T2DM are more limited than for adult patients. Intermediate complications of youth-onset T2DM, such as increased albuminuria, often develop in late childhood or early adulthood, and end-stage complications, including kidney failure, develop in mid-life. The increasing frequency, earlier onset and greater severity of childhood obesity in the past 50 years together with increasingly sedentary lifestyles and an increasing frequency of intrauterine exposure to diabetes are important drivers of the epidemic of youth-onset T2DM. The particularly high risk of the disease in historically disadvantaged populations suggests an important contribution of social and environmental factors, including limited access to high-quality health care, healthy food choices and opportunities for physical activity as well as exposure to stressors including systemic racism and environmental pollutants. Understanding the mechanisms that underlie the development and aggressive clinical course of youth-onset T2DM is key to identifying successful prevention and management strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight/obesity and depression are highly co-occurring conditions with shared pathophysiology as well as social and economic determinants. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review aims to comprehensively synthesize extant literature with a focus on the effectiveness of interventions targeting obesity and depression comorbidity. METHODS We searched databases including MEDLINE, ProQuest Central, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, from inception of the databases until Nov 12, 2021. Articles were included if they reported on the effects of pharmacological, psychological or dietary interventions on comorbid depression and overweight/obesity as their primary or secondary outcome. RESULTS Of the 5480 identified records, 19 eligible researches comprising 15 RCTs and 4 uncontrolled longitudinal studies for 3408 participants with comorbid depression and overweight/obesity. The available literature is not sufficient to inform evidence-based treatments targeting obesity and comorbid depression contemporaneously. Notwithstanding, the combination of CBT and lifestyle intervention show efficacy targeting obesity and comorbid depression as do some nutritional supplements, antidepressants and anti-diabetic agents. LIMITATIONS The high heterogeneity of various interventions in the included studies may cause a lack of comparability between different studies. CONCLUSIONS Concurrent management of depression and overweight/obesity is suggested by available data. There is a pressing need for studies that evaluate the effectiveness in real world samples of persons experiencing multiple co-occurring chronic diseases including but not limited to depression and overweight/obesity.

Abstract
Importance Latino youths are disproportionately impacted by prediabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Lifestyle intervention is the first-line approach for preventing or delaying T2D among adults with prediabetes. Objective To assess the efficacy of a diabetes prevention program among Latino youths aged 12 to 16 years with prediabetes. Design, Setting, and Participants This 2-group parallel randomized clinical trial with 2:1 randomization assessed a lifestyle intervention against usual care among Latino youths with prediabetes and obesity with 6- and 12-month follow-up. The study was conducted at YMCA facilities in Phoenix, Arizona from May 2016 to March 2020. Intervention Participants were randomized to lifestyle intervention (INT) or usual care control (UCC). The 6-month INT included 1 d/wk of nutrition and health education and 3 d/wk of physical activity. UCC included 2 visits with a pediatric endocrinologist and a bilingual, bicultural registered dietitian to discuss diabetes risks and healthy lifestyle changes. Main Outcomes and Measures Insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, and weight-specific quality of life (YQOL-W) at 6- and 12-month follow-up. Results A total of 117 Latino youths (mean [SD] age, 14 [1] years; 47 [40.1%] girls) were included in the analysis. Overall, 79 were randomized to INT and 38 to UCC. At 6 months, the INT led to significant decreases in mean (SE) 2-hour glucose (baseline: 144 [3] mg/dL; 6 months: 132 [3] mg/dL; P = .002) and increases in mean (SE) insulin sensitivity (baseline: 1.9 [0.2]; 6 months: 2.6 [0.3]; P = .001) and YQOL-W (baseline: 75 [2]; 6 months: 80 [2]; P = .006), but these changes were not significantly different from UCC (2-hour glucose: mean difference, -7.2 mg/dL; 95% CI, -19.7 to 5.3 mg/dL; P for interaction = .26; insulin sensitivity: mean difference, 0.1; 95% CI, -0.7 to 0.9; P for interaction = .79; YQOL-W: mean difference, 6.3; 95% CI, -1.1 to 13.7; P for interaction = .10, respectively). Both INT (mean [SE], -15 mg/dL [4.9]; P = .002) and UCC (mean [SE], -15 mg/dL [5.4]; P = .005) had significant 12-month reductions in 2-hour glucose that did not differ significantly from each other (mean difference, -0.3; 95% CI, -14.5 to 14.1 mg/dL; P for interaction = .97). At 12 months, changes in mean (SE) insulin sensitivity in INT (baseline: 1.9 [0.2]; 12 months: 2.3 [0.2]; P = .06) and UCC (baseline: 1.9 [0.3]; 12 months: 2.0 [0.2]; P = .70) were not significantly different (mean difference, 0.3; 95% CI, -0.4 to 1.0; P for interaction = .37). At 12 months, YQOL-W was significantly increased in INT (basline: 75 [2]; 12 months: 82 [2]; P < .001) vs UCC (mean difference, 8.5; 95% CI, 0.8 to 16.2; P for interaction = .03). Conclusions and Relevance In this randomized clinical trial, both INT and UCC led to similar changes in T2D risk factors among Latino youths with diabetes; however, YQOL-W was improved in INT compared with UCC. Diabetes prevention interventions that are effective in adults also appeared to be effective in high risk youths. Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02615353.
