Abstract
During the last decades, the ever-increasing incidence of diseases has led to high rates of mortality throughout the world. On the other hand, the inability and deficiencies of conventional approaches (such as chemotherapy) in the suppression of diseases remain challenging issues. As a result, there is a fundamental requirement to develop novel, biocompatible, bioavailable, and practical nanomaterials to prevent the incidence and mortality of diseases. Chitosan (CS) derivatives and their blends are outstandingly employed as promising drug delivery systems for disease therapy. These biopolymers are indicated more efficient performance against diseases compared with conventional modalities. The CS blends possess improved physicochemical properties, ease of preparation, high affordability, etc. characteristics compared with other biopolymers and even pure CS which result in efficient thermal, mechanical, biochemical, and biomedical features. Also, these blends can be administrated through different routes without a long-term treatment period. Due to the mentioned properties, numerous formulations of CS blends are developed for pharmaceutical sciences to treat diseases. This review article highlights the progressions in the development of CS-based blends as potential drug delivery systems against diseases.

Abstract
Developing new biodegradable packaging with superior properties and advanced functionalities is one of the most emerging research areas of interest in food packaging. In this study, PLA/PEG-based nanocomposite films incorporated with different amounts of nano glass flake (NGF) (0, 0.5, 1, and 2 phr) were fabricated via casting solution for applications in food packaging. The ATR-FTIR displayed no chemical interaction between the PLA/PEG-based matrix and NGF particles. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations exhibited a relatively smooth and homogeneous surface without defects. Incorporation of the NGF into the PLA/PEG-based matrix did not affect the color and opacity of the fabricated films. The prepared nanocomposite films were highly transparent and exhibited superior properties such as increased hydrophobicity, appreciable oxygen barrier properties, and enhanced thermal stability. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis confirmed the existence of a single glass-transition temperature (Tg) as evidence of miscibility. According to the research results, the PLA/PEG/NGF1 nanocomposite film significantly offered the best overall performance. This work has developed new insight into the potential application of nano glass flakes in food packaging.

Abstract
Composite films were prepared using a flow casting method, with chitosan and pullulan as film-forming agents and Artemisia annua essential oil as the UV absorber. The utility of the composite films for preserving grape berries was assessed. The effect of the added Artemisia annua essential oil on the physicochemical properties of the composite film was investigated to determine the optimal amount of essential oil that should be added to the composite film. When the Artemisia annua essential oil content was 0.8 %, the elongation at break of the composite film increased to 71.25 ± 2.87 % and the water vapor transmission rate decreased to 0.378 ± 0.007 g‧mm/(m2‧h‧kpa). The transmittance of the composite film was almost 0 % in the UV region (200-280 nm) and <30 % in the visible light region (380-800 nm), reflecting the UV absorption by the composite film. Additionally, the composite film extended the storage time of the grape berries. Therefore, the composite film containing Artemisia annua essential oil may be a promising fruit packaging material.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a kind of high-purity cellulose biomaterial with a unique three-dimensional structure. To improve the mechanical properties and reinforce the BC composite films, in this study, we provide in detail a simple, fast, and environmentally-friendly method to prepare a biodegradable composite film using chitosan (CS) with different molecular weights and BC with excellent dispersion. The water moisture content (MC), water solubility (WS), contact angle (CA), mechanical properties and barrier properties were measured to assess the effect of CSn-OBC composite films. The morphology, structural and thermal properties of the films were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, spectral analysis, thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction. Results showed that the biodegradable film prepared by grafting chitosan with high molecular weight and uniformly dispersing bacterial cellulose exhibited superior mechanical properties, water resistance, and thermal stability, which are essential characteristics for commercial applications in complex environments.

Abstract
Herein, we developed clove essential oil (CEO) loaded Chitosan-ZnO hybrid nanoparticles (CS-ZnO@CEO (CZC NPs)) integrated chitosan/pullulan (CS/PL) nanocomposite films. SEM images revealed a homogenous distribution of CZC NPs with minimum aggregation in nanocomposite films. The incorporation of CZC NPs led to enhanced tensile strength (~39.82%), film hydrophobicity (~35.36%), UV light blocking ability, water vapor barrier (~84.64%), and oxygen barrier (~57.66%) compared to the bare CS/PL film and overall migration limit of CPCZC films were found below the permitted limit of 1000 μg/dm2. Besides, incorporation of CZC NPs into the CS/PL films enhanced antioxidant activity and showed strong antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and E. coli. Also, the CPCZC films displayed potential to extend the shelf-life of chicken meat by up to 5 days when stored at 8 ± 2 °C. These results suggest that the prepared CPCZC films acquire the ideal prerequisites for potential active packaging materials.

Abstract
The synergistic effect of chitosan (CS), glycyrrhizic acid (GA) and ZnO/palygorskite (ZnO/PAL) as potential wound dressing was evaluated in the form of films by the solution casting method. The nanocomposite films were well-characterized with ATR-FTIR, XRD and SEM to explore the interactions between CS, GA and ZnO/PAL. Physical, mechanical and antibacterial properties of the nanocomposite films were systematically investigated for their reliability in end-up utilization. Importantly, it was found that the presence of PAL in the films provided enhanced mechanical properties, whereas CS, GA and ZnO supplied a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, especially for drug-resistant bacteria such as ESBL-E. coli and MRSA. Overall, this research demonstrated that the prepared films can be a promising candidate for wound-care materials.

Abstract
The current work aims to prepare biologically active and pH responsive smart films based on Chitosan (CS)/Methylcellulose (MC) matrix integrated with Phyllanthus reticulatus (PR) ripen fruit anthocyanin. The prepared smart films (CMPR) were fabricated through a cost-effective solvent casting technique. The existences of secondary interactions were confirmed by the FT-IR analysis. The smooth SEM images revealed the miscibility and compatibility of the CS/MC matrix with PR anthocyanin. The incorporation of PR anthocyanin significantly blocked the UV light transmission of the CS/MC films while slight decrease in the transparency was observed. The water solubility, moisture retention capacity, and water vapor transmission rate were significantly enhanced with an increase in the PR anthocyanin content. Additionally, the prepared CMPR smart films showed pink color in acidic pH while yellowish in basic pH solution and further exhibited strong antioxidant activity as well as antibacterial activity against the common foodborne pathogens such as S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and E. coli. The CMPR smart film also displayed potential result for monitoring the fish fillet freshness at room temperature. The results proclaim that the prepared CMPR smart films could be utilized for quality assurance as well as shelf life extension of the marine food products.
