Abstract
BACKGROUND Geographic tongue is an oral mucosal lesion affecting the tongue. The association between geographic tongue and the mucosal microbiota in children remains unclear. METHOD To characterize the feature of lingual microbiota in pediatric geographic tongue, lingual swabs were collected from lesion sites and healthy sites of 25 patients with geographic tongue (14 males and 11 females; age 5.21 ±2.94 years) and 19 controls (10 males and 9 females; age 5.31±2.82 years). DNA was extracted and the 16S rRNA was amplificated, sequenced and analyzed. RESULTS The lingual microbiota composition was significantly different between children with geographic tongue and the healthy cohort; Streptobacillus was reduced in geographic tongue, while Catonella, Bacillus and Oribacterium were overrepresented. When the lesions and the normal mucosa were compared, an increased abundance of Prevotella oris was observed. CONCLUSION Our results provided new insight into the association between oral microbiota and pediatric geographic tongue.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A lesion in the oral cavity can appear clinically white due to an increase in keratin (hyperkeratosis), an increase in the thickness of the spongiotic cells (acanthosis), accumulation of fluid within the epithelium, and formation of the pseudomembrane. There are several innocuous white lesions, while only a few require aggressive management. The lesions of frictional keratosis, tobacco pouch keratosis, and morsicatio buccarum (MB) are innocuous white lesions that can be treated with simple treatments. This paper aimed to study the prevalence of the three white lesions among the patients visiting Saveetha Dental College. The objectives were to study the gender prevalence of the lesions and the average age distribution of these lesions. METHODOLOGY The study was a retrospective clinical study that collected data from DIAS (Digital Information and Archiving Software) over four years among the patients visiting Saveetha Dental College. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were based on the clinical diagnostic features, and the existence of any other oral potentially malignant disorder made the exclusion criteria. The collected data were entered into Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). The data were analyzed for descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS The total number of patients with the lesions mentioned above was 5,613, with an average age of 37.28 years. The most common lesion was frictional keratosis with 4,026 patients, followed by tobacco pouch keratosis with 1,537 patients. The least common was MB, with 54 patients. Based on gender, all of the above lesions were most commonly seen in men. The age analysis revealed that frictional keratosis and MB were seen in middle age, while tobacco pouch keratosis was seen in middle to old age. DISCUSSION From the above study, it is noticed that frictional keratosis was the most common lesion, which had arisen most commonly in the third molar region and was seen in the younger age group due to the eruption of the third molars. Among the lesions, the only tobacco-induced lesion was tobacco pouch keratosis, which was seen predominantly in middle to old age, implying that prolonged habit usage was essential for the lesion to develop. CONCLUSION This study has helped us understand the prevalence of innocuous keratotic lesions in the South Indian population. The findings of this study will give a guideline for confirming the clinical diagnosis of similar lesions. This could potentially reduce the need for undertaking a biopsy and rather try treating with less invasive modalities, and when no response is seen, then it would be worthwhile to do a biopsy.

Abstract
Childhood diseases are a continuous source of interest in all areas of general and dental medicine. Congenital, developmental, and hereditary diseases may either be present upon birth or appear in early childhood. Developmental anomalies, although often asymptomatic, may become grounds for different infections. Furthermore, they can indicate certain systemic disorders. Childhood age frequently brings about benign tumors and different types of traumatic lesions to the oral mucosa. Traumatic lesions can be caused by chemical, mechanical, or thermal injury. Mucocele and ranula are, by definition, traumatic injuries of the salivary glands or their ducts. Recurrent aphthous lesions are the most common type of ulcerations in childhood, and their etiology is considered multifactorial. Oral mucosal lesions in children require different treatment approaches depending on etiological factors and clinical presentation. Clinicians should have adequate knowledge of oral anatomy in order to diagnose and treat pathological conditions.

Abstract
In recent years, extensive evidence has been published about usage of laser in oral lesions. The aim of the present study was to review the effectiveness of laser radiation in the treatment of pediatric oral soft tissue problems. The relevant keywords were searched in EBSCO, Medline (via Ovid), PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (WOS) databases. Then, eligible case series and controlled clinical trial studies, which published up to the end of 2018, were extracted and scrutinized. In this study, the age range of ≤ 21 years or the average age of ≤ 21 years was considered as the pediatric group. After limiting the search results, removing duplicate titles and eligibility evaluation, 17 papers were enrolled to the study (seven controlled clinical trials and ten case series). Er:YAG (2940 nm), CO2 (10,600 nm), Er,Cr:YSGG (2780 nm), and diode (650, 660, and 975 nm) lasers indicated successful clinical results on mucocele excision, frenectomy, gingival incision and re-contouring, and treatment of vascular malformations. In addition, 660-nm diode laser radiation was an effective adjuvant treatment for halitosis and gingivitis induced by multi-bracket appliances. Reduction or absence of pain and bleeding, suitable homeostasis, reduction of operation time, less analgesic consumption, and antibacterial effect were among the advantages of the laser radiation in the studies. Laser as a main or adjuvant tool can have an effective role in surgical and non-surgical treatments of pediatric oral soft tissue problems. Conducting further randomized controlled trial studies on different soft tissue lesions can contribute to drawing better conclusions.

Abstract
White lesions of the oral cavity are quite common and can have a variety of etiologies, both benign and malignant. Although the vast majority of publications focus on leukoplakia and other potentially malignant lesions, most oral lesions that appear white are benign. This review will focus exclusively on reactive white oral lesions. Included in the discussion are frictional keratoses, irritant contact stomatitis, and smokeless tobacco keratoses. Leukoedema and hereditary genodermatoses that may enter in the clinical differential diagnoses of frictional keratoses including white sponge nevus and hereditary benign intraepithelial dyskeratosis will be reviewed. Many products can result in contact stomatitis. Dentrifice-related stomatitis, contact reactions to amalgam and cinnamon can cause keratotic lesions. Each of these lesions have microscopic findings that can assist in patient management.

Abstract
Oral lesions in children encompass a wide range of etiologies, including idiopathic entities as well as those related to an underlying systemic illness. In addition, oral masses include benign entities harboring locally destructive behavior and even malignancies in rare cases. Thorough patient history and detailed and efficient physical examination are critical for determining which lesions can be closely observed versus those require further diagnostic work-up. Understanding normal oral cavity anatomy is crucial for performing appropriate evaluation. This review describes the appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for oral cavity lesions and reviews the broad differential diagnosis of oral cavity masses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A few cases of oral schwannomas in paediatric patients have appeared in the literature so far; however, there are no studies focusing solely on paediatric oral schwannomas. The aim of this study is to report a case of palatal schwannoma in a young female patient and review the pertinent literature on oral schwannomas in paediatric patients. CASE REPORT A 12-year-old girl presented with a growing swelling of 2 weeks duration on the hard palate. With a provisional diagnosis of a salivary gland neoplasm an incisional biopsy was performed under local anesthesia and the histologic examination disclosed an Antony A type schwannoma. TREATMENT Complete surgical resection of the lesion was performed under local anaesthesia through a palatal mucosa incision and paraffin gauze was sutured on the surgical area for protection during secondary healing. The bone underlying the tumor was normal. The postoperative period was uneventful and 2 weeks after excision the gauze were removed. FOLLOW-UP There have been no signs of recurrence during a 18-month follow up period. CONCLUSION A palatal swelling in a child or adolescent may represent a neoplasm, such as a schwannoma and requires careful clinical and radiographic evaluation of the dentition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cleft lip and palate reconstructions demonstrate significantly lower surgical site infection rates compared with clean-contaminated cases, prompting investigation into the pathophysiology causing this discrepancy. Recent studies have identified a new group of innate lymphocytes called innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), located in barrier surfaces of the skin, airways, and intestine. Our objectives were to explore for the first time the presence of ILCs in the vermillion of neonates and young children undergoing cleft lip reconstruction and characterize their composition by measuring the three classes of ILCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Lip tissue samples were collected from 13 subjects undergoing vermillion resection during cleft lip reconstructive surgery. Preparative, transmission electron microscopy, and analytical flow cytometry were performed. The functionality of ILCs was tested in terms of their capacity to produce type 1 (IFN-γ/TNF-α), type 2 (IL-5/IL-13), and type 3 (IL-17/IL-22) cytokines. Data were analyzed using Student t test or the analysis of variance to establish significance (P < 0.05) among groups for all other data. RESULTS All three classes of ILCs were detected and visualized in the tissue samples. In all samples, the level of ILC2 subset was significantly higher than the other two ILC subsets (P < 0.01), followed by the ILC1 subset, which was present in significantly higher levels than the ILC3 subset (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our data place ILCs for the first time in the interface of oral mucosal immunity, tissue microenvironment, and homeostasis during and after tissue development, possibly explaining lower infection rates in cleft lip or palate reconstructions.

Abstract
Geographic tongue is a benign recurrent condition of uncertain aetiology affecting the tongue characterized by loss of epithelium especially filiform papillae giving a characteristic appearance. The clinical presentation may vary from asymptomatic to painful and burning ulceration. The condition is commonly seen in adults but few cases are reported in children. A case of asymptomatic geographic tongue in three-year-old male child and literature review with new insight in aetiology is presented here. Management depends on the clinical condition and underlying aetiology.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of miconazole for treating oral candidiasis. Twelve electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials evaluating treatments for oral candidiasis and complemented by hand searching. The clinical and mycological outcomes, as well as adverse effects, were set as the primary outcome criteria. Seventeen trials were included in this review. Most studies were considered to have a high or moderate level of bias. Miconazole was more effective than nystatin for thrush. For HIV-infected patients, there was no significant difference in the efficacy between miconazole and other antifungals. For denture wearers, microwave therapy was significantly better than miconazole. No significant difference was found in the safety evaluation between miconazole and other treatments. The relapse rate of miconazole oral gel may be lower than that of other formulations. This systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that miconazole may be an optional choice for thrush. Microwave therapy could be an effective adjunct treatment for denture stomatitis. Miconazole oral gel may be more effective than other formulations with regard to long-term results. However, future studies that are adequately powered, large-scale, and well-designed are needed to provide higher-quality evidence for the management of oral candidiasis.
