Enhanced activation of PMS by a novel Fenton-like composite Fe3O4/S-WO3 for rapid chloroxylenol degradation

Development of tungsten-modified iron oxides to decompose an over-the-counter painkiller, Acetaminophen by activating peroxymonosulfate

Acetaminophen (APAP) is a well-known type of over-the-counter painkillers and is frequently found in surface waterbodies, causing hepatotoxicity and skin irritation. Due to its persistence and chronic effects on the environment, innovative solutions must be provided to decompose APAP, effectively. Innovative catalysts of tungsten-modified iron oxides (TF) were successfully developed via a combustion method and thoroughly characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, a porosimetry analysis, Mössbauer spectroscopy, VSM magnetometry, and EPR. With the synthesis method, tungsten was successfully incorporated into iron oxides to form ferrites and other magnetic iron oxides with a high porosity of 19.7 % and a large surface area of 29.5 m2/g. Also, their catalytic activities for APAP degradation by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) were evaluated under various conditions. Under optimal conditions, TF 2.0 showed the highest APAP degradation of 95 % removal with a catalyst loading of 2.0 g/L, initial APAP concentration of 5 mg/L, PMS of 6.5 mM, and pH 2.15 at room temperature. No inhibition by solution pHs, alkalinity, and humic acid was observed for APAP degradation in this study. The catalysts also showed chemical and mechanical stability, achieving 100 % degradation of 1 mg/L APAP during reusability tests with three consecutive experiments. These results show that TFs can effectively degrade persistent contaminants of emerging concern in water, offering an impactful contribution to wastewater treatment to protect human health and the ecosystem.

Tungsten sulfide highly boosted Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate system for rapid degradation of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid: Performance, mechanisms, and applications

In this study, the Fe(III)/WS2/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was found to remove up to 97% of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CHA) within 10 min. CHA is a model compound for naphthenic acids (NAs), which are prevalent in petroleum industrial wastewater. The addition of WS2 effectively activated the Fe(III)/PMS system, significantly enhancing its ability to produce reactive oxidative species (ROS) for the oxidation of CHA. Further experimental results and characterization analyses demonstrated that the metallic element W(IV) in WS2 could provide electrons for the direct reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), thus rapidly activating PMS and initiating a chain redox process to produce ROS (SO4•-, •OH, and 1O2). Repeated tests and practical exploratory experiments indicated that WS2 exhibited excellent catalytic performance, reusability and anti-interference capacity, achieving efficient degradation of commercial NAs mixtures. Therefore, applying WS2 to catalyze the Fe(III)/PMS system can overcome speed limitations and facilitate simple, economical engineering applications.

Nitro-functionalization on MIL-53(Fe) for PCMX degradation: Elevating Fenton-like catalytic propelled by abundant reaction sites and iron cycle

To address the issue of excessive residues of 4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol (PCMX) in the water environment. In a one-step solvothermal process, iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) material MIL-53(Fe) undergoes a synthetic modification strategy. 2-Nitroterephthalic acid as an organic ligand reacted with Fe3+ in a solvothermal process lasting 18 h to yield the nitro-functionalized MIL-53(Fe)-NO2(18h). The objective was to augment the abundance of Fe central unsaturated coordination sites (Fe CUCs) and expedite the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle, thereby enhancing the heterogeneous Fenton-like treatment capability of pollutants. MIL-53(Fe)-NO2(18h) has excellent hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) catalytic activity and PCMX degradation across a broad pH spectrum (4.0∼8.0). Almost complete removal of PCMX was achieved within 30 min, while pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constants (kobs) increased 4.37 times over MIL-53(Fe). The confirmation of increased Fe CUCs abundance in MIL-53(Fe)-NO2(18h) was achieved through Lewis acidity, oxygen vacancies (OVs) signals, and Fe-O coordination characterization results. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Fe CUCs in MIL-53(Fe)-NO2(18h) exhibits heightened affinity for H2O2 adsorption, showcasing stronger charge transfer and enhanced H2O2 dissociation ability. The Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle, a driving force of Fenton-like reactions, was notably improved in the nitro-modified materials. These enhancements significantly expedited the Fenton-like process, resulting in the generation of increased amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROSs), with hydroxyl radicals (OH·) being pivotal components in degradation. The MIL-53(Fe)-NO2(18h)/H2O2 system has demonstrated versatility in treating a variety of emerging contaminants, achieving removal efficiencies exceeding 99.7% for other antibiotics and endocrine disruptors within 60 min. Furthermore, MIL-53(Fe)-NO2(18h) demonstrated outstanding reusability and adaptability in actual water environments. This study introduces a straightforward and environmentally friendly strategy for remediating environmental pollution using Fe-MOF-catalysed heterogeneous Fenton-like technology.

Effective treatment of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene from aqueous media using a sono-photo-Fenton-like process with a zero-valent iron nanoparticle (nZVI) catalyst

In this study, we examine the effectiveness of using a combination of a sono-photo-Fenton-like procedure and nano zero-valent iron catalyst (nZVI) to treat 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in an aquatic environment. Zero-valent iron particles were generated by a chemical reduction technique. nZVI nanoparticles were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to characterize the nanocatalyst. The resulting nZVI nanoparticles were used as an addition in a sono-photo-Fenton method to remediate an aqueous solution contaminated with TNT. Furthermore, influences of operational factors such as temperature, catalyst dosage, wavelength, ultraviolet power, ultrasonic frequency and power, pH level, H2O2/nZVI ratio, initial TNT concentration, and reaction duration on the treatment of TNT were investigated. Under the conditions of an ideal pH of 3, temperature range of 40-45 °C, concentration of 50 mg per L TNT, dose of 2 mM of nZVI, and ratio of H2O2/Fe0 of 20, a treatment efficiency of 95.2% was achieved after a duration of 30 minutes. The sono-photo-Fenton process combined with nZVI showed a higher TNT removal efficiency compared to the Fenton, sono-Fenton, and photo-Fenton processes under the same conditions. Moreover, it promises a potential solution to treat TNT at the pilot scale while allowing reuse of the nZVI catalyst and the limitation of sludge.

COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 Composite for Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Pyrethroid Pesticides in Vegetables

Pyrethroid pesticides (PYRs) have found widespread application in agriculture for the protection of fruit and vegetable crops. Nonetheless, excessive usage or improper application may allow the residues to exceed the safe limits and pose a threat to consumer safety. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop efficient technologies for the elimination or trace detection of PYRs from vegetables. Here, a simple and efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) strategy was developed for the simultaneous purification and enrichment of five PYRs in vegetables, employing the magnetic covalent organic framework nanomaterial COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 as an adsorbent. COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 was prepared by a straightforward solvothermal method, using Fe3O4 as a magnetic core and benzidine and 3,3,5,5-tetraaldehyde biphenyl as the two building units. COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 could effectively capture the targeted PYRs by virtue of its abundant π-electron system and hydroxyl groups. The impact of various experimental parameters on the extraction efficiency was investigated to optimize the MSPE conditions, including the adsorbent amount, extraction time, elution solvent type and elution time. Subsequently, method validation was conducted under the optimal conditions in conjunction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Within the range of 5.00-100 μg·kg-1 (1.00-100 μg·kg-1 for bifenthrin and 2.5-100 μg·kg-1 for fenpropathrin), the five PYRs exhibited a strong linear relationship, with determination coefficients ranging from 0.9990 to 0.9997. The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.3-1.5 μg·kg-1, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.9-4.5 μg·kg-1. The recoveries were 80.2-116.7% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 7.0%. Finally, COF-SiO2@Fe3O4, NH2-SiO2@Fe3O4 and Fe3O4 were compared as MSPE adsorbents for PYRs. The results indicated that COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 was an efficient and rapid selective adsorbent for PYRs. This method holds promise for the determination of PYRs in real samples.

Multi-level FeCo/N-doped carbon nanosheet for peroxymonosulfate oxidation and sterilization inactivation

Magnetic carbon-based catalysts with environmental friendliness have exhibited prominent effects on advanced oxidation processes. Herein, a multi-level FeCo/N-doped carbon nanosheet (FeCo/CNS) was synthesized by facile impregnation iron-cobalt salt onto cotton and followed by confined pyrolysis. We identified excellent advantages of the modified FeCo/CNS materials: (i) The convenience of the synthesis method and (ii) The dual effect of sterilization and contaminant degradation achieved through the FeCo/CNS-activated Peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The comparative experimental showed that FeCo/CNS could provide favorable catalytic performance, completely removing bisphenol A (BPA) and tetracycline (TC) within 5 min. Moreover, the potent sterilization properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were also verified. Analysis of the degradation pathway confirmed the existence of intermediates, and toxicological research demonstrated that the toxicity of the degradation intermediates of BPA gradually decreased over time. Our research provided an excellent application of FeCo/CNS in PMS oxidation and sterilization inactivation.

Piezoelectric catalytic driven advanced oxidation process using two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides for wastewater pollutants remediation

The public and society have increasingly recognized numerous grave environmental issues, including water pollution, attributed to the rapid expansion of industrialization and agriculture. Renewable energy-driven catalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) represent a green, sustainable, and environmentally friendly approach to meet the demands of environmental remediation. In this context, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) piezoelectric materials, with their non-centrosymmetric crystal structure, exhibit unique features. They create dipole polarization, inducing a built-in electric field that generates polarized holes and electrons and triggers redox reactions, thereby facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species for wastewater pollutant remediation. A broad spectrum of 2D TMDCs piezoelectric materials have been explored in self-integrated Fenton-like processes and persulfate activation processes. These materials offer a more simplistic and practical method than traditional approaches. Consequently, this review highlights recent advancements in 2D TMDCs piezoelectric catalysts and their roles in wastewater pollutant remediation through piezocatalytic-driven AOPs, such as Fenton-like processes and sulfate radicals-based oxidation processes.

Synthesis of X@DRHC (X=Co, Ni, Mn) catalyst from comprehensive utilization of waste rice husk and spent lithium-ion batteries for efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation

Highly efficient resource recycling and comprehensive utilization play a crucial role in achieving the goal of reducing resource wasting, environmental protection, and achieving goal of sustainable development. In this work, the two kinds waste resources of agricultural rice husk and metal ions (Co, Ni, and Mn) from spent lithium-ion batteries have been skillfully utilized to synthesize novel Fenton-like catalysts. Desiliconized rice husk carbon (DRHC) with rich pore structure and large specific surface area from rice husk has been prepared and used as scalable carrier, and dandelion-like nanoparticles cluster could be grown in situ on the surface of the carrier by using metal ions contained waste water. The designed catalysts (X@DRHC) as well as their preparation process were characterized in detail by SEM, TEM, BET, XRD and XPS, respectively. Meanwhile, their catalytic abilities were also studied by activating potassium peroxomonosulfate (PMS) to remove methylene blue (MB). The results indicate X@DRHC displays excellent degradation efficiency on MB with wide pH range and stable reusability, which is suitable for the degradation of various dyes. This work has realized the recycling and high-value utilization of waste resources from biomass and spent lithium-ion batteries, which not only creates an efficient way to dispose waste resources, but also shows high economic benefits in large-scale water treatment.

Study on adsorption of salicylic acid and sulfosalicylic acid by MOF-sodium alginate gel beads obtained in a green way

A composite (ZS-UiO-66-NH2) zirconium crosslinked sodium alginate gel beads (ZS)-metal-organic skeleton (UiO-66-NH2) were prepared in this study through in-situ growth under simple, green and mild conditions for removal of the salicylic acid (SA) and sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) from water. The physicochemical properties of ZS-UiO-66-NH2 were characterized using various analytical methods. The influencing factors in the adsorption process including pH of solution, amount of adsorbent, coexisting ions, adsorption time, reaction temperature and equilibrium concentration of SA/SSA were performed in batch adsorption. The experimental results indicated that ZS-UiO-66-NH2 had high stability and could achieve efficient adsorption of SA/SSA in broad pH range (2-9) and salinity (0-0.2 mol·L-1). SA and SSA adsorbed on the composite at 293 K reached high values of 193 and 167 mg·g-1 from Langmuir model, respectively. Kinetic and isotherm studies demonstrated that the adsorption processes were mainly multilayer heterogeneous chemisorption. Thermodynamic data manifested that the two processes were exothermic and spontaneous with increasing entropy. ZS-UiO-66-NH2 can effectively remove SA/SSA from simulated wastewater under different pH and can be reused after elution with a NaHCO3 solution (5 mmol·L-1). The ZS-UiO-66-NH2 composite has great potential for removing SA/SSA from actual water bodies.

Isolation and characterization of Rhodococcus sp. GG1 for metabolic degradation of chloroxylenol

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly increased the demand of disinfectant use. Chloroxylenol (para-chloro-meta-xylenol, PCMX) as the major antimicrobial ingredient of disinfectant has been widely detected in water environments, with identified toxicity and potential risk. The assessment of PCMX in domestic wastewater of Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) showed a positive correlation between PCMX concentration and population density. An indigenous PCMX degrader, identified as Rhodococcus sp. GG1, was isolated and found capable of completely degrading PCMX (50 mg L-1) within 36 h. The growth kinetics followed Haldane's inhibition model, with maximum specific growth rate, half-saturation constant, and inhibition constant of 0.38 h-1, 7.64 mg L-1, and 68.08 mg L-1, respectively. The degradation performance was enhanced by optimizing culture conditions, while the presence of additional carbon source stimulated strain GG1 to alleviate inhibition from high concentrations of PCMX. In addition, strain GG1 showed good environmental adaptability, degrading PCMX efficiently in different environmental aqueous matrices. A potential degradation pathway was identified, with 2,6-dimethylhydroquinone as a major intermediate metabolite. Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) was found to play a key role in dechlorinating PCMX via hydroxylation and also catalyzed the hydroxylated dechlorination of other halo-phenolic contaminants through co-metabolism. This study characterizes an aerobic bacterial pure culture capable of degrading PCMX metabolically, which could be promising in effective bioremediation of PCMX-contaminated sites and in treatment of PCMX-containing waste streams.

Adsorption and catalytic degradation of bisphenol A and p-chlorophenol by magnetic carbon nanotubes

Phenolic compounds are common industrial pollutants that seriously endangers water ecology and human health. Therefore, the development of efficient and recyclable adsorbents is of importance for wastewater treatment. In this research, HCNTs/Fe3O4 composites were constructed using co-precipitation way by loading magnetic Fe3O4 particles onto hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), showing excellent adsorption capacity for Bisphenol A (BPA) and p-chlorophenol (p-CP), and excellent catalytic ability of activating potassium persulphate (KPS) for degradation of BPA and p-CP. The adsorption capacity and catalytic degradation potential were evaluated for the removal of BPA and p-CP from solutions. The results showed that the adsorption took only 1 h to reach equilibrium and HCNTs/Fe3O4 had maximum adsorption capacities of 113 mg g-1 for BPA and 41.6 mg g-1 for p-CP at 303 K, respectively. The adsorption of BPA fitted well using the Langmuir, Temkin and Freundlich models while the adsorption of p-CP fitted well using the Freundlich and Temkin models. BPA adsorption on HCNTs/Fe3O4 was dominated by π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding forces. The adsorption included both the mono-molecular layer adsorption on the adsorbent surface and the multi-molecular layer adsorption on the non-uniform surface. The adsorption of p-CP on HCNTs/Fe3O4 was a multi-molecular layer adsorption on a dissimilar surface. The adsorption was controlled by forces such as π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, partition effect and molecular sieve effect. Moreover, KPS was added to the adsorption system to initiate a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalytic degradation. Over a wide pH range (4-10), 90% of the aqueous BPA solution and 88% of the p-CP solution were degraded in 3 and 2 h, respectively. After three adsorption-regeneration or degradation cycles, the removal of BPA and p-CP remained up to 88% and 66%, indicating that HCNTs/Fe3O4 composite is cost-effective, stable and highly efficient to remove BPA and p-CP from solution.

Embryonic exposure to chloroxylenol induces developmental defects and cardiovascular toxicity via oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in zebrafish

Chloroxylenol is an extensively consumed anti-microbial compound. Since its usage is on the rise due to the coronavirus pandemic and ban on other antimicrobial ingredients, recent studies have suggested the necessity of estimating its potential for ecotoxicity. The detrimental effect of chloroxylenol on zebrafish (Danio rerio) viability has been reported; however, research on the mechanisms underlying its toxicity is quite limited. Therefore, we applied the zebrafish model for elucidating responses against chloroxylenol to predict its toxicity toward human health and ecology. Zebrafish exposed to chloroxylenol (0, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg/L) at the embryonic stage (from 6 h post-fertilization (hpf) to 96 hpf) showed impaired viability and hatchability, and pathological phenotypes. To address these abnormalities, cellular responses such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis were confirmed via in vivo imaging of a fluorescent dye or measurement of the transcriptional changes related to each response. In particular, developmental defects in the cardiovascular system of zebrafish exposed to 0, 0.5, 1, and 2.5 mg/L of chloroxylenol from 6 to 96 hpf were identified by structural analyses of the system in the flk1:eGFP transgenic line. Additional experiments were conducted using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to predict the adverse impacts of chloroxylenol on the human vascular system. Chloroxylenol impairs the viability and tube formation ability of HUVECs by modulating ERK signaling. The findings obtained using the zebrafish model provide evidence of the possible risks of chloroxylenol exposure and suggest the importance of more in-depth ecotoxicological studies.

Engineering active heterojunction architecture with oxygenated-Co, Mo bimetallic sulfide heteronanosheet and graphene oxide for peroxymonosulfate activation

Bimetallic sulfides have distinctive catalytic property in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for water remediation. Polyoxometalates as potential precursors have rarely been reported for the catalytic degradation of refractory organic pollutants. Herein, a composite catalyst of Co-Mo bimetallic sulfides supported onto graphene oxide (O-CoMoS/GO) with a heterojunction architecture was synthesized through a hydrothermal strategy with polyoxometalates ((NH₄)₄[Co^IIMo₆O₂₄H₆]·6H₂O) as the precursor and applied in the PMS activation. This material showed a superior performance for the catalytic degradation of the model organic pollutant, 4-chlorophenol (rapidly removed within 10 min with an apparent reaction rate constant of 0.5458 min^-1). O-CoMoS/GO outperformed most of the reported catalysts in terms of activity and had a strong tolerance towards common organic and inorganic compounds in water, and could perform well in different real water systems. Experimental and theoretical results indicated that the introduction of GO could achieve the enrichment of electrons on the metals and reduce the d band center (ε_d) of Co close to the Fermi level (ε_F), thereby facilitating the interfacial electron transfer process. The activation mechanism was due to the as-prepared bimetallic sulfides and the formation of heterojunction structure with GO, where Co(II) as the active center could be regenerated by the adjacent Mo element (as co-catalyst) and by gathering electrons from GO through the Co/Mo-O-C coupling. This work provides insights into the design of bimetallic sulfide catalysts in activating PMS for water remediation.

Modulating the electron structure of Co-3d in Co3O4-x/WO2.72 for boosting peroxymonosulfate activation and degradation of sulfamerazine: Roles of high-valence W and rich oxygen vacancies

Sulfate radical (SO₄^•-)-based heterogonous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) show promising potential to degrade emerging contaminants, however, regulating the electron structure of a catalyst to promote its catalytic activity is challenging. Herein, a hybrid that consists of Co₃O_4-x nanocrystals decorated on urchin-like WO_2.72 (Co₃O_4-x/WO_2.72) with high-valence W and rich oxygen vacancies (OVs) used to modulate the electronic structure of Co-3d was prepared. The Co₃O_4-x/WO_2.72 that developed exhibited high catalytic activity, activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and degrading sulfamerazine (SMR). With the use of Co₃O_4-x/WO_2.72, 100 % degradation of SMR was achieved within 2 min, at a pH of 7, with the reaction rate constant k₁ = 3.09 min^-1. Both characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the formation of OVs and the promotion of catalytic activity. The introduction of WO_2.72 greatly regulated the electronic structure of Co₃O_4-x. Specifically, the introduction of high-valence W enabled the Co-3d band centre to be closer to the Fermi level and enhanced electrons (e^-) transfer ability, while the introduction of OVs-Co in Co₃O_4-x promoted the activity of electrons in the Co-3d orbital and the subsequent catalytic reaction. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) were identified as •OH, SO₄^•-, and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) by quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (EPR) analysis. The DFT calculation using the Fukui index indicated the reactive sites in SMR were available for an electrophilic attack, and three degradation pathways were proposed.

Oxygen Vacancies in Piezoelectric ZnO Twin-Mesocrystal to Improve Peroxymonosulfate Utilization Efficiency via Piezo-Activation for Antibiotic Ornidazole Removal

Piezoelectric mesocrystals as defective materials have been demonstrated to possess adsorptive and catalytic properties in redox reactions. However, there is still a lack of research on the quantitative relationship between the defect concentration and the piezocatalytic performance in piezoelectric mesocrystals. Herein, twin-hierarchical structure ZnO piezoelectric mesocrystals are taken with different oxygen-vacancies (OVs) concentrations to quantitatively investigate the effect of defect content on the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) piezo-activation in water purification. The ZnO piezoelectric mesocrystal with moderate OVs concentration exhibits a rapid antibiotic ornidazole (ORZ) pollutants degradation rate (0.034 min^-1 ) and achieves a high PMS utilization efficiency (0.162) that exceeds the most state-of-the-art catalytic processes, while excessive OVs suppressed the piezocatalytic performance. Through calculations of electron property and reactants affinity, a quantitative relationship between OVs concentration and piezocatalytic properties is established. The ZnO mesocrystal with moderate OVs concentration realized increased electron delocalization, reduced charge transfer barrier, and enhanced reactants affinity, thus accelerating the kinetics of PMS activation. This work provides theoretical guidance for the application of defect engineering in mesocrystal to realize enhanced piezocatalytic performance.

FeS combined ozonation to remove p-aminobenzenesulfonamide from water: Density functional theory insights into the mechanism

The applicability and performance of FeS in ozonation process to remove p-aminobenzenesulfonamide (SN) from water was assessed, and the working mechanism of FeS was comprehensively explored by both experimental means and density functional theory (DFT) simulation. FeS combined ozonation achieved 74% of SN removal in 60 min under the optimal condition, which was 37% higher than by ozonation alone, and 12% higher than FeO combined ozonation. Highly active species of •OH, •SO4-, 1O2 and •O2- were detected in the FeS combined ozonation system, the evolution pathway of the involved species was expounded with the aid of DFT calculation. The results revealed that •O2-, H2O2 and SO42- were originally formed via interface reactions on FeS surface, then gradually transformed into •OH, 1O2 and •SO4- through subsequent chain reactions. Moreover, FeS had a lower energy barrier of 0.16 eV than FeO with a value of 0.83 eV for the transformation of ozone to active atomic oxygen. The presented study provided a significant insight into the role of Fe-based materials in ozonation, and was of great importance to guide the route for ozonation process improvement.

Z-scheme CuO/Fe3O4/GO heterojunction photocatalyst: Enhanced photocatalytic performance for elimination of tetracycline

CuO/Fe₃O₄/GO, as a Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst, was successfully synthesized and used as a photocatalyst for removing tetracycline from aqueous solution. The CuO/Fe₃O₄/GO heterogeneous catalyst combines the narrow bandgap semiconductor CuO, oxygen vacancies of Fe₃O₄, and oxygen-containing reaction sites of GO. Without the addition of activators (persulfate or H₂O₂), the photocatalytic performance on decomposing tetracycline is very excellent. Compared with GO, Fe₃O₄, and CuO, CuO/Fe₃O₄/GO exhibits superior photocatalytic performance. Under visible light radiation, CuO/Fe₃O₄/GO generates h⁺ and ⋅O₂^-, which are the mainly responsible active groups for TC degradation. The effects of various pH, catalysts, and reuse on the degradation performance are evaluated, and the optimal conditions for CuO/Fe₃O₄/GO removal of tetracycline are obtained at pH 7, catalyst dosage 20 mg⋅L^-1, TC at a concentration of 30 mg/L, nearly 97.3% of tetracycline is decomposed. This study has great potential in the treatment of wastewater containing various antibiotics.
