Selective capture of trace sulfur gas by porous covalent-organic materials

Exploring the Potential of a Highly Scalable Metal-Organic Framework CALF-20 for Selective Gas Adsorption at Low Pressure

In this study, the ability of the highly scalable metal-organic framework (MOF) CALF-20 to adsorb polar and non-polar gases at low pressure was investigated using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results from the simulated adsorption isotherms revealed that the highest loading was achieved for SO₂ and Cl₂, while the lowest loading was found for F₂ molecules. The analysis of interaction energies indicated that SO₂ molecules were able to form the strongest adsorbent-adsorbate interactions and had a tight molecular packing due to their polarity and angular structure. Additionally, Cl₂ gas was found to be highly adsorbed due to its large van der Waals surface and strong chemical affinity in CALF-20 pores. MD simulations showed that SO₂ and Cl₂ had the lowest mobility inside CALF-20 pores. The values of the Henry coefficient and isosteric heat of adsorption confirmed that CALF-20 could selectively adsorb SO₂ and Cl₂. Based on the results, it was concluded that CALF-20 is a suitable adsorbent for SO₂ and Cl₂ but not for F₂. This research emphasizes the importance of molecular size, geometry, and polarity in determining the suitability of a porous material as an adsorbent for specific adsorbates.

Covalent organic framework-based porous materials for harmful gas purification

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with 2D or 3D networks are a class of novel porous crystalline materials, and have attracted more and more attention in the field of gas purification owing to their attractive physicochemical properties, such as high surface area, adjustable functionality and structure, low density, and high stability. However, few systematic reviews about the application statuses of COFs in gas purification are available, especially about non-CO₂ harmful gases. In this review, the recent progress of COFs about the capture, catalysis, and detection of common harmful gases (such as CO₂, NO_x, SO₂, H₂S, NH₃ and volatile pollutants) were comprehensively discussed. The design strategies of COF functional materials from porosity adjustment to surface functionalization (including bottom-up approach, post-synthetic approach, and blending with other materials) for certain application were summarized in detail. Furthermore, the faced challenges and future research directions of COFs in the harmful gas treatment were clearly proposed to inspire the development of COFs.

Capture of toxic gases in MOFs: SO2, H2S, NH3 and NO x

MOFs are promising candidates for the capture of toxic gases since their adsorption properties can be tuned as a function of the topology and chemical composition of the pores. Although the main drawback of MOFs is their vulnerability to these highly corrosive gases which can compromise their chemical stability, remarkable examples have demonstrated high chemical stability to SO2, H2S, NH3 and NO x . Understanding the role of different chemical functionalities, within the pores of MOFs, is the key for accomplishing superior captures of these toxic gases. Thus, the interactions of such functional groups (coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, μ-OH groups, defective sites and halogen groups) with these toxic molecules, not only determines the capture properties of MOFs, but also can provide a guideline for the desigh of new multi-functionalised MOF materials. Thus, this perspective aims to provide valuable information on the significant progress on this environmental-remediation field, which could inspire more investigators to provide more and novel research on such challenging task.

Screening metal-organic frameworks for capturing radioactive gas Rn in indoor air

The radioactive gas Rn in indoor air shows severe harm to the human body and even induces the occurence of lung cancer. Finding an excellent candidate that can efficiently and selectively adsorb Rn, is still a great challenge. In this work, we use the grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulation to systematically investigate the selectivities of 23 different kinds of representative metal organic framework (MOFs) for Rn separation from the Rn/N₂ and Rn/O₂ mixtures at 298 K. Results indicate that ZIF-12, HKUST-1, IRMOF-62 and ZIF-11 are four kinds of excellent candidates for capturing Rn. In particular, the selectivities of ZIF-12 for Rn/N₂ and Rn/O₂ mixtures with Rn molar fraction X_Rn = 0.001 reach ∼2500 and 1200 at 1 atm and 298 K, respectively. Moreover, when the Rn concentration becomes smaller, the selectivity of ZIF-12 for Rn would increase significantly. In short, we found that ZIF-12 is indeed a very promising candidate for trapping radioactive Rn in indoor air.

Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation analyses of urea with ammoniated and ammoxidized lignin

Ammoniated lignin, prepared through the Mannich reaction of lignin, has more advantages as a slow-release carrier of urea molecules than ammoxidized lignin and lignin. The advantages of the ammoniated lignin include its amine groups added and its high molecular mass kept as similar as that of lignin. Three organic molecules including guaiacyl, 2-hydroxybenzylamine and 5-carbamoylpentanoic acid are monomers respectively in lignin, ammoniated lignin and ammoxidized lignin. We studied the difference between the interactions of lignin, ammoniated lignin and ammoxidized lignin with respect to urea, based on radial distribution functions (RDFs) results from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Glass transition temperature (T_g) and solubility parameter (δ) of ammoniated and ammoxidized lignin have been calculated by MD simulations in the constant-temperature and constant-pressure ensemble (NPT). Molecular docking results showed the interaction sites of the urea onto the ammoniated and ammoxidized lignin and three different interaction modes were identified. Root mean square deviation (RMSD) values could indicate the mobilities of the urea molecule affected by the three different interaction modes. A series of MD simulations in the constant-temperature and constant-volume ensemble (NVT) helped us to calculate the diffusivity of urea which was affected by the content of urea in ammoniated and ammoxidized lignin.
