Abstract
We have disclosed silver(I)-induced switching of regioselectivity in rhodium-catalyzed C-H alkynylation of indole derivatives with the help of a pivaloyl directing group by tuning C-H metalation modes. The judicious choice of AgOAc, Ag2O, and Ag2CO3 affords an array of C2-alkynylated indoles, C4-alkynylated indoles, and C2,C4-dialkynylated indoles, respectively. The synthetic utility of the alkyne fragment is demonstrated by derivatization into valuable indole-based compounds.

Abstract
Electrophilic addition reaction to alkynes is of fundamental importance in organic chemistry, yet the regiocontrol when reacting with unsymmetrical 1,2-dialkyl substituted alkynes is often problematic. Herein, it is demonstrated that the rarely recognized β-boron effect can confer a high level of site-selectivity in several alkyne electrophilic addition reactions. A broad range of highly functionalized and complex organoborons are thus formed under simple reaction conditions starting from propargylic MIDA (N-methyliminodiacetic acid) boronates. These products are demonstrated to be valuable building blocks in organic synthesis. In addition to the regiocontrol, this study also observes a drastic rate enhancement upon B(MIDA) substitution. Theoretical calculation reveals that the highest occupied molecular obital (HOMO) energy level of propargylic B(MIDA) is significantly raised by 0.3 eV, and the preferential electrophilic addition to the γ position is due to its higher HOMO orbital coefficient and more negative natural bond orbital (NBO) charge compared to the β position. This study demonstrates the potential of utilizing the β-boron effect in stereoelectronic control of chemical transformations, which can inspire further research in this area.

Abstract
Electrifying the production of base and fine chemicals calls for the development of electrocatalytic methodologies for these transformations. We show here that the semihydrogenation of alkynes, an important transformation in organic synthesis, is electrocatalyzed at room temperature by a simple complex of earth-abundant nickel, [Ni(bpy)3]2+. The approach operates under mild conditions and is selective toward the semihydrogenated olefins with good to very good Z isomer stereoselectivity. (Spectro)electrochemistry supports that the electrocatalytic cycle is initiated in an atypical manner with a nickelacyclopropene complex, which upon further protonation is converted into a putative cationic Ni(II)-vinyl intermediate that produces the olefin after electron-proton uptake. This work establishes a proof of concept for homogeneous electrocatalysis applied to alkyne semihydrogenation, with opportunities to improve the yields and stereoselectivity.

Abstract
Glycans play important roles in all major kingdoms of organisms, such as archea, bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals. Cellulose, the most abundant polysaccharide on the Earth, plays a predominant role for mechanical stability in plants, and finds a plethora of applications by humans. Beyond traditional use, biomedical application of cellulose becomes feasible with advances of soluble cellulose derivatives with diverse functional moieties along the backbone and modified nanocellulose with versatile functional groups on the surface due to the native features of cellulose as both cellulose chains and supramolecular ordered domains as extractable nanocellulose. With the focus on ionic cellulose-based compounds involving both these groups primarily for biomedical applications, a brief introduction about glycoscience and especially native biologically active glycosaminoglycans with specific biomedical application areas on humans is given, which inspires further development of bioactive compounds from glycans. Then, both polymeric cellulose derivatives and nanocellulose-based compounds synthesized as versatile biomaterials for a large variety of biomedical applications, such as for wound dressings, controlled release, encapsulation of cells and enzymes, and tissue engineering, are separately described, regarding the diverse routes of synthesis and the established and suggested applications for these highly interesting materials.

Abstract
A catalyst-free and transition-metal-free method for the synthesis of 1,2-diketones from aerobic alkyne oxidation was reported. The oxidation of various internal alkynes, especially more challenging aryl-alkyl acetylenes, proceeded smoothly with inexpensive, easily handled, and commercially available potassium persulfate and an ambient air balloon, achieving the corresponding 1,2-diketones with up to 85% yields. Meanwhile, mechanistic studies indicated a radical process, and the two oxygen atoms in the 1,2-diketons were most likely from persulfate salts and molecular oxygen, respectively, rather than water.

Abstract
Copper(i)/N-heterocyclic carbene complexes enable a transfer semihydrogenation of alkynes employing simple and readily available alcohols such as isopropanol. The practical overall protocol circumvents the use of commonly employed high pressure equipment when using dihydrogen (H2) on the one hand, and avoids the generation of stoichiometric silicon-based waste on the other hand, when hydrosilanes are used as terminal reductants.

Abstract
Although alkyne metathesis has been known for 50 years, rapid progress in this field has mostly occurred during the last two decades. In this article, the development of several highly efficient and thoroughly studied alkyne metathesis catalysts is reviewed, which includes novel well-defined, in situ formed and heterogeneous systems. Various alkyne metathesis methodologies, including alkyne cross-metathesis (ACM), ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM), cyclooligomerization, acyclic diyne metathesis polymerization (ADIMET), and ring-opening alkyne metathesis polymerization (ROAMP), are presented, and their application in natural product synthesis, materials science as well as supramolecular and polymer chemistry is discussed. Recent progress in the metathesis of diynes is also summarized, which gave rise to new methods such as ring-closing diyne metathesis (RCDM) and diyne cross-metathesis (DYCM).

High-Active Metallic-Activated Carbon Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING 2018. Abstract
A series of low-loaded metallic-activated carbon catalysts were evaluated during the selective hydrogenation of a medium-chain alkyne under mild conditions. The catalysts and support were characterized by ICP, hydrogen chemisorption, Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR micro-ATR), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS). When studying the effect of the metallic phase, the catalysts were active and selective to the alkene synthesis. NiCl/C was the most active and selective catalytic system. Besides, when the precursor salt was evaluated, PdN/C was more active and selective than PdCl/C. Meanwhile, alkyne is present in the reaction media, and geometrical and electronic effects favor alkene desorption and so avoid their overhydrogenation to the alkane. Under mild conditions, nickel catalysts are considerably more active and selective than the Lindlar catalyst.

Abstract
The electrochemical reduction of 2-(2,2-dibromovinyl)naphthalene in a DMF solution (Pt cathode) yields selectively 2-ethynylnaphthalene or 2-(bromoethynyl)naphthalene in high yields, depending on the electrolysis conditions. In particular, by simply changing the working potential and the supporting electrolyte, the reaction can be directed towards the synthesis of the terminal alkyne (Et4NBF4) or the bromoalkyne (NaClO4). This study allowed to establish that 2-(bromoethynyl)naphthalene can be converted into 2-ethynylnaphthalene by cathodic reduction.
