Novel variation mode decomposition integrated adaptive sparse principal component analysis and it application in fault diagnosis

The sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) is widely used in the fault detection for nonlinear complex chemical processes in recent years. However, insufficient data processing, fixed models and fault type single classification cannot be used in the time-varying process. Therefore, a novel adaptive sparse principal component analysis (ASPCA) algorithm fused with improved variation mode decomposition (IVMD) (ASPCA-IVMD) is proposed for fault detection in chemical processes. The bat algorithm is innovatively integrated to optimize the parameters of the variable modulus decomposition. Then the optimized parameters are used for data preprocessing to suppress noise. In addition, based on the traditional SPCA, the threshold calculation is fused to realize the adaptive selection of principal components. After the principal components are determined, T² and Q statistics are used for fault detection. Finally, the proposed method is verified by the Tennessee Eastman process case. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can select the principal components adaptively according to the data for having the real-time property of chemical process. Meanwhile, compared with traditional methods (principal component analysis, sparse principal component analysis, deep belief network integrating dropout, adaptive unscented Kalman filter integrating radial basis function and sparse deep belief network), the detection rate of the ASPCA-IVMD method is more than 99%, which shows superiority.

Criteria for optimizing kernel methods in fault monitoring process: A survey

Nowadays, how to select the kernel function and their parameters for ensuring high-performance indicators in fault diagnosis applications remains as two open research issues. This paper provides a comprehensive literature survey of kernel-preprocessing methods in condition monitoring tasks, with emphasis on the procedures for selecting their parameters. Accordingly, twenty kernel optimization criteria and sixteen kernel functions are analyzed. A kernel evaluation framework is further provided for helping in the selection and adjustment of kernel functions. The proposal is validated via a KPCA-based monitoring scheme and two well-known benchmark processes.

A novel based-performance degradation indicator RUL prediction model and its application in rolling bearing

Aiming at the problem of poor prediction performance of rolling bearing remaining useful life (RUL) with single performance degradation indicator, a novel based-performance degradation indicator RUL prediction model is established. Firstly, the vibration signal of rolling bearing is decomposed into some intrinsic scale components (ISCs) by piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial-local characteristic-scale decomposition (PCHIP-LCD), and the effective ISCs are selected to reconstruct signals based on kurtosis-correlation coefficient (K-C) criteria. Secondly, the multi-dimensional degradation feature set of reconstructed signals is extracted, and then the sensitive degradation indicator IICAMD is calculated by fusing the improved independent component analysis (IICA) and Mahalanobis Distance (MD). Thirdly, the false fluctuation of the IICAMD is repaired by using the gray regression model (GM) to obtain the health indicator (HI) of the rolling bearing, and the start prediction time (SPT) of the rolling bearing is determined according to the time mutation point of HI. Finally, generalized regression neural network (GRNN) model based on HI is constructed to predict the RUL of rolling bearing. The experimental results of two groups of different rolling bearing data-sets show that the proposed method achieves better performance in prediction accuracy and reliability.

A Review of Kernel Methods for Feature Extraction in Nonlinear Process Monitoring

Kernel methods are a class of learning machines for the fast recognition of nonlinear patterns in any data set. In this paper, the applications of kernel methods for feature extraction in industrial process monitoring are systematically reviewed. First, we describe the reasons for using kernel methods and contextualize them among other machine learning tools. Second, by reviewing a total of 230 papers, this work has identified 12 major issues surrounding the use of kernel methods for nonlinear feature extraction. Each issue was discussed as to why they are important and how they were addressed through the years by many researchers. We also present a breakdown of the commonly used kernel functions, parameter selection routes, and case studies. Lastly, this review provides an outlook into the future of kernel-based process monitoring, which can hopefully instigate more advanced yet practical solutions in the process industries.
