Influence of hydrophobicity and roughness on the wetting and flow resistance of water droplets on solid surface: A many-body dissipative particle dynamics study

Improving assay feasibility and biocompatibility of 3D cyclic olefin copolymer microwells by superhydrophilic modification via ultrasonic spray deposition of polyvinyl alcohol

Sample partitioning is a crucial step towards digitization of biological assays on polymer microfluidic platforms. However, effective liquid filling into microwells and long-term hydrophilicity remain a challenge in polymeric microfluidic devices, impeding the applicability in diagnostic and cell culture studies. To overcome this, a method to produce permanent superhydrophilic 3-dimensional microwells using cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) microfluidic chips is presented. The COC substrate is oxidized using UV treatment followed by ultrasonic spray coating of polyvinyl alcohol solution, offering uniform and long-term coating of high-aspect ratio microfeatures. The coated COC surfaces are UV-cured before bonding with a hydrophobic pressure-sensitive adhesive to drive selective filling into the wells. The surface hydrophilicity achieved using this method remains unchanged (water contact angle of 9°) for up to 6 months and the modified surface is characterized for physical (contact angle & surface energy, morphology, integrity of microfeatures and roughness), chemical composition (FTIR, Raman spectroscopy) and coating stability (pH, temperature, time). To establish the feasibility of the modified surface in biological applications, PVA-coated COC microfluidic chips are tested for DNA sensing (digital LAMP detection of CMV), and biocompatibility through protein adsorption and cell culture studies (cell adhesion, viability, and metabolic activity). Kidney and breast cells remained viable for the duration of testing (7 days) on this modified surface, and the coating did not affect the protein content, morphology or quality of the cultured cells. The ultrasonic spray coated system, coating with 0.25 % PVA for 15 cycles with 0.12 A current after UV oxidation, increased the surface energy of the COC (naturally hydrophobic) from 22.04 to 112.89 mJ/m2 and improved the filling efficiency from 40 % (native untreated COC) to 94 % in the microwells without interfering with the biocompatibility of the surface, proving to be an efficient, high-throughput and scalable method of microfluidic surface treatment for diagnostic and cell growth applications.

Fabrication of Bioresorbable Barrier Membranes from Gelatin/Poly(4-Hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB)

Dental implant surgery is a procedure that replaces damaged or missing teeth with an artificial implant. During this procedure, guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes are commonly used to inhibit the migration of epithelium and GBR at the surgical sites. Due to its biodegradability, good biocompatibility, and unique biological properties, gelatin (GT) is considered a suitable candidate for guiding periodontal tissue regeneration. However, GT-based membranes come with limitations, such as poor mechanical strength and mismatched degradation rates. To confront this challenge, a series of GT/poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) composite membranes are fabricated through electrospinning technology. The morphology, composition, wetting properties, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and in vivo biodegradability of the as-prepared composite membranes are carefully characterized. The results demonstrate that all the membranes present excellent biocompatibility. Moreover, the in vivo degradation rate of the membranes can be manipulated by changing the ratio of GT and P4HB. The results indicate that the optimized GT/P4HB membranes with a high P4HB content (75%) may be suitable for periodontal tissue engineering because of their good mechanical properties and biodegradation rate compatible with tissue growth.

Tuning a Superhydrophobic Surface on an Electrospun Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Membrane by Polysulfone Blending

Nanofibers made of different materials have been continuously studied and widely used as membranes due to their simple fabrication techniques and tunable surface characteristics. In this work, we developed polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membranes by the electrospinning method and blended them with polysulfone (PSU) to obtain superhydrophobic surfaces on the fiber structures. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show that the fabricated nanofibers have smooth and continuous morphology. In addition, to observe the effect of the PSU-based blending material, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of the samples were acquired, providing chemical compositions of the bare and PSU-blended PAN nanofibers. The fabricated PSU/PAN composite nanofibers have a diameter range of 222-392 nm. In terms of the wettability, the measured water contact angle (WCA) value of the PAN nanofibers was improved from (14 ± 1)° to (156 ± 6)°, (160 ± 4)°, (156 ± 6)°, and (158 ± 4)° after being blended with PSU solutions having concentrations of 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 wt %, respectively. This result has proven that the PAN nanofiber surfaces can be tuned from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic characteristics simply by introducing PSU into the PAN solution prior to electrospinning, where a small PSU concentration of 0.5% has been sufficient to provide the desired effect. Owing to its low-cost and highly efficient process, this strategy may be further explored for other types of polymer-based nanofibers.

Hydroxyl silicone oil grafting onto a rough thermoplastic polyurethane surface created durable super-hydrophobicity

Indwelling medical catheters are frequently utilized in medical procedures, but they are highly susceptible to infection, posing a vital challenge for both health workers and patients. In this study, the superhydrophobic micro-nanostructure surface was constructed on the surface of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) membrane using heavy calcium carbonate (CaCO3) template. To decrease the surface free energy, hydroxyl silicone oil was grafted onto the surface, forming a super-hydrophobic surface. The water contact angle (WCA) increased from 91.1° to 143 ± 3° when the concentration of heavy calcium CaCO3 was 20% (weight-to-volume (w/v)). However, the increased WCA was unstable and tended to decrease over time. After grafting hydroxyl silicone oil, the WCA rose to 152.05 ± 1.62° and remained consistently high for a period of 30 min. Attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis revealed a chemical crosslinking between silicone oil and the surface of TPU. Furthermore, Scanning electron microscope (SEM) image showed the presence of numerous nanoparticles on the micro surface. Atomic force microscope (AFM) testing indicated a significant improvement in surface roughness. This method of creating a hydrophobic surface demonstrated several advantages, including resistance to cell, bacterial, protein, and platelet adhesion and good biosecurity. Therefore, it holds promising potential for application in the development of TPU-based medical catheters with antibacterial properties.

Colloid Transport in Bicontinuous Nanoporous Media

Colloid transport and retention in porous media are critical processes influencing various Earth science applications, from groundwater remediation to enhanced oil recovery. These phenomena become particularly complex in the confined spaces of nanoporous media, where strong boundary layer effects and nanoconfinement significantly alter colloid behavior. In this work, we use particle dynamics models to simulate colloid transport and retention processes in bicontinuous nanoporous (BNP) media under pressure gradients. By utilizing particle-based models, we track the movement of each colloid and elucidate the underlying colloid retention mechanisms. Under unfavorable attachment conditions, the results reveal two colloid retention mechanisms: physical straining and trapping in low-flow zone. Furthermore, we investigate the effects of critical factors including colloid volume fraction, d, pressure difference, ΔP, interaction between colloids and BNP media, Ec-p, and among colloids, Ec-c, on colloid transport. Analysis of breakthrough curves and colloid displacements demonstrates that higher values of d, lower values of ΔP, and strong Ec-p attractions significantly increase colloid retention, which further lead to colloid clogging and jamming. In contrast, Ec-c has minimal impact on colloid transport due to the limited colloid-colloid interaction in nanoporous channels. This work provides critical insights into the fundamental factors governing colloid transport and retention within stochastic nanoporous materials.

Ultra-high flux mesh membranes coated with tannic acid-ZIF-8@MXene composites for efficient oil-water separation

Oil/water separation has become a global concern due to the increasing discharge of multi-component harmful oily wastewater. Super wetting membranes have been shown to be an effective material for oil/water separation. Ultra-high flux stainless-steel meshes (SSM) with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity were fabricated by tannic acid (TA) modified ZIF-8 nanoparticles (TZIF-8) and two-dimensional MXene materials for oil/water separation. The TZIF-8 increased the interlayer space of MXene, enhancing the flux permeation (69,093 L m-2h-1) and rejection of the composite membrane (TZIF-8@MXene/SSM). The TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membrane showed an underwater oil contact angle of 154.2°. The membrane maintained underwater superoleophobic after stability and durability tests, including various pH solutions, organic solvents, reusability, etc. In addition, the oil/water separation efficiency of TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membranes was higher than 99% after treatment in harsh conditions and recycling. The outstanding anti-fouling, stability, durability, and recyclability properties of TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membrane highlight the remarkable potential of membranes for complex oil/water separation process.

Sodium-alginate-based indicator film containing a hydrophobic nanosilica layer for monitoring fish freshness

In this study, hydrophobic sodium alginate/anthocyanin/cellulose nanocrystal indicator films were fabricated by incorporating nanosilica (NS) as a waterproofing layer. The concentrations and formation methods (spraying (S), coating (C), and impregnation (I)) of the NS layer (denoted as NSS, NSC, NSI, respectively) were optimized. The results indicated that the optimum concentration of the NS layer was 5 % at a water contact angle (WCA) 110.5°. Further, Fourier transform infrared spectra showed the presence of SiOSi and SiCH3 groups in the NSS, NSC, and NSI films, and X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that original structures of these films were disordered. Moreover, the surface morphology, mechanical properties, and light transmission were affected by the NS layer, and the optimal layer was found to be NSI. After 10 days of storage at 100 % humidity, the NSI film exhibited low water vapor adsorption (37.22 g) and permeability (0.1484 g/m·s·Pa·10-11) and a high WCA (110.2°). In addition, the NSI film exhibited a visible color shift with an increasing pH of the buffer solution. A monitoring test of fish freshness showed that the NSI film displayed a distinctive color change corresponding to fish spoilage during 14 days of storage. This indicates that NSI has high potential in indicator film applications.

Sustainable whey proteins-nanostructured zinc oxide-based films for the treatment of chronic wounds: New insights from biopharmaceutical studies

Chronic wounds represent silent epidemic affecting a large portion of the world population, especially the elders; in this context, the development of advanced bioactive dressings is imperative to accelerate wound healing process, while contrasting or preventing infections. The aim of the present work was to provide a deep characterization of the functional and biopharmaceutical properties of a sustainable thin and flexible films, composed of whey proteins alone (WPI) and added with nanostructured zinc oxide (WPZ) and intended for the management of chronic wounds. The potential of whey proteins-based films as wound dressings has been confirmed by their wettability, hydration properties, elastic behavior upon hydration, biodegradation propensity and, when added with nanostructured zinc oxide, antibacterial efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, i.e. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In-vitro experiments, performed on normal human dermal fibroblasts, confirmed film cytocompatibility, also revealing the possible role of Zn2+ ions in promoting fibroblast proliferation. Finally, in-vivo studies on rat model confirmed film suitability to act as wound dressing, since able to ensure a regular healing process while providing effective protection from infections. In particular, both films WPI and WPZ are responsible for the formation in the wound bed of a continuous collagen layer similar to that of healthy skin.

Virus Behavior after UV254 Treatment of Materials with Different Surface Properties

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the limitations in scientific and engineering understanding of applying germicidal UV to surfaces. This study combines surface characterization, viral retention, and the related UV dose response to evaluate the effectiveness of UV254 as a viral inactivation technology on five surfaces: aluminum, ceramic, Formica laminate, PTFE and stainless steel. Images of each surface were determined using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), which produced a detailed characterization of the surfaces at a nanometer scale. From the SEM images, the surface porosity of each material was calculated. Through further analysis, it was determined that surface porosity, surface roughness, contact angle, and zeta potential correlate to viral retention on the material. The imaging revealed that the aluminum surface, after repeated treatment, is highly oxidized, increasing surface area and surface porosity. These interactions are important as they prevent the recovery of MS-2 without exposure to UV254. The dose response curve for PTFE was steeper than ceramic, Formica laminate and stainless steel, as inactivation to the detection limit was achieved at 25 mJ/cm2. These findings are consistent with well-established literature indicating UV reflectivity of PTFE is maximized. Statistical testing reinforced that the efficacy of UV254 for surface inactivation varies by surface type.

One-Step Hydrothermal Strategy for Preparation of a Self-Cleaning TiO2/SiO2 Fiber Membrane toward Oil-Water Separation in a Complex Environment

Oil pollution caused by a large number of industrial activities and oil spill accidents has posed serious harm to the environment and human health. However, some challenges remain with the existing separation materials, such as poor stability and fouling resistance. Herein, a TiO₂/SiO₂ fiber membrane (TSFM) was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method for oil-water separation in acid, alkali, and salt environments. The TiO₂ nanoparticles were successfully grown on the fiber surface, endowing the membrane with superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity. The as-prepared TSFM exhibits high separation efficiency (above 98%) and separation fluxes (3016.38-3263.45 L·m^-2·h^-1) for various oil-water mixtures. Importantly, the membrane shows good corrosion resistance in acid, alkaline, and salt solutions and still maintains underwater superoleophobicity and high separation performance. The TSFM displays good performance after repeated separation, demonstrating its excellent antifouling ability. Importantly, the pollutants on the membrane surface can be effectively degraded under light radiation to restore its underwater superoleophobicity, showing the unique self-cleaning ability of the membrane. In view of its good self-cleaning ability and environmental stability, the membrane can be used for wastewater treatment and oil spill recovery and has a broad application prospect in water treatment in complex environments.

Insights into Waterflooding in Hydrocarbon-Bearing Nanochannels of Varying Cross Sections from Mesoscopic Multiphase Flow Simulations

Waterflooding is one of the geotechniques used to recover fuel sources from nanoporous geological formations. The scientific understanding of the process that involves the multiphase flow of nanoconfined fluids, however, has lagged, mainly due to the complex nanopore geometries and chemical compositions. To enable the benchmarked flow of nanoconfined fluids, architected geomaterials, such as synthesized mesoporous silica with tunable pore shapes and surface chemical properties, are used for designing and conducting experiments and simulations. This work uses a modified many-body dissipative particle dynamics (mDPD) model with accurately calibrated parameters to perform parametric flow simulations for studying the influences of waterflooding-driven power, pore shape, surface roughness, and surface wettability on the multiphase flow in heptane-saturated silica nanochannels. Remarkably, up to an 80% reduction in the effective permeability is found for water-driven heptane flow in a baseline 4.5-nm-wide slit channel when compared with the Hagen-Poiseuille equation. In the 4.5-nm-wide channels with architected surface roughness, the flow rate is found to be either higher or lower than the baseline case, depending on the shape and size of cross sections. High wettability of the solid surface by water is essential for achieving a high recovery of heptane, regardless of surface roughness. When the solid surface is less wetting or nonwetting to water, the existence of an optimal waterflooding-driven power is found to allow for the highest possible recovery. A detailed analysis of the evolution of the transient water-heptane interface in those nanochannels is presented to elucidate the underlying mechanisms that impact or dictate the multiphase flow behaviors.

Modified nano-SiO2/PU hydrophobic composite film prepared through in-situ coupling by KH550 for oil-water separation

In this study, hydrophobic polymer composite films based on polyurethane (PU) were prepared for oil-water separation. Hydrophilic fumed silica (nano-SiO₂) was introduced as reinforcing filler, and silane coupling agent (KH550) was used to crosslink PU with nano-SiO₂ in situ for enhancing the nano-SiO₂ dispersion in the films. The microscopic morphology, crystalline structure, and hydrophobic properties of the films were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, water contact angle, and water absorption tests. The results showed that the hydrophobicity of the nano-SiO₂/PU composite films increased with the addition of nano-SiO₂. KH550 not only significantly promoted the crosslink action between PU and nano-SiO₂ but also enhanced the dispersion of nano-SiO₂ in the composite films. Moreover, the pore structure of the prepared films was changed with the addition of nano-SiO₂ and KH550, which greatly improved the hydrophobicity. The test results for oil-water separation performance showed that the prepared composite films can efficiently separate the oil from oil-water mixtures with good repeatability.

Multifunctional composite coatings with hydrophobic, UV-resistant, anti-oxidative, and photothermal performance for healthcare

Personal protective textiles have attracted extensive interest since Corona Virus Disease 2019 has broken out. Moreover, developing eco-friendly, multifunctional waterproof, and breathable surface is of great importance but still faces enormous challenges. Notably, good hydrophobicity and breathability are necessary for protective textiles, especially protective clothing and face masks for healthcare. Herein, the multifunctional composite coatings with good UV-resistant, anti-oxidative, hydrophobic, breathable, and photothermal performance has been rapidly created to meet protective requirements. First, the gallic acid and chitosan polymer was coated onto the cotton fabric surface. Subsequently, the modified silica sol was anchored on the coated cotton fabric surface. The successful fabrication of composite coatings was verified by RGB values obtained from the smartphone and K/S value. The present work is an advance for realizing textile hydrophobicity by utilizing fluorine-free materials, compared with the surface hydrophobicity fabricated with conventional fluorinated materials. The surface free energy has been reduced from 84.2 to 27.6 mJ/m² so that the modified cotton fabric could repel the ethylene glycol, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide solutions, respectively. Besides, the composite coatings possesses lower adhesion to deionized water. After 70 cycles of the sandpaper abrasion, the fluorine-free hydrophobic coatings still exhibits good hydrophobicity with WCA of 124.6 ± 0.9°, with overcoming the intrinsic drawback of the poor abrasion resistance of hydrophobic surfaces. Briefly, the present work may provide a universal strategy for rapidly creating advanced protective coatings to meet personal healthcare, and a novel method for detecting RGB values of composite coatings by smartphone.

Green Fabrication of Sustainable Porous Chitosan/Kaolin Composite Membranes Using Polyethylene Glycol as a Porogen: Membrane Morphology and Properties

One of the major challenges in membrane manufacturing today is to reduce the environmental footprint by promoting biobased raw materials and limiting the use of toxic solvents. In this context, environmentally friendly chitosan/kaolin composite membranes, prepared using phase separation in water induced by a pH gradient, have been developed. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) with a molar mass ranging from 400 to 10,000 g·mol^-1 was used as a pore forming agent. The addition of PEG to the dope solution strongly modified the morphology and properties of the formed membranes. These results indicated that PEG migration induced the formation of a network of channels promoting the penetration of the non-solvent during the phase separation process, resulting in an increase in porosity and the formation of a finger-like structure surmounted by a denser structure of interconnected pores of 50-70 nm in diameter. The hydrophilicity of the membrane surface increased likely related to PEG trapping in the composite matrix. Both phenomena were more marked as the PEG polymer chain was longer, resulting in a threefold improvement in filtration properties.

Simulation Study on the Screening of Hydrophobic Surface Materials for Pipeline Drag Reduction Based on Adsorption Properties

Hydrophobic surface drag reduction techniques are effective in reducing the frictional resistance of fluids, the adsorption of liquid molecules on hydrophobic surfaces can reflect the resistance to fluid flow through such solid surfaces. Based on molecular simulation technology, we investigate the adsorption characteristics of water molecules on hydrophobic surfaces to achieve rapid screening of hydrophobic materials in fire-fighting water supply systems. The Monte Carlo method was used to simulate the adsorption process of polymers and to analyze the effects of temperature and fixed adsorption quantity. Contact angle tests were also done to verify polymer hydrophobicity. The isothermal adsorption heat, water molecule distribution, and energy distribution were studied by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods. Then, adsorption localization simulations and electrostatic potential distributions were used to predict possible adsorption sites on hydrophobic surfaces and single-molecule chains. Finally, the interaction energy, diffusion coefficient, and free volume were investigated to explain the adsorption mechanism at the molecular level. Simulation results show that, overall, PTFE was more hydrophobic and PES was more hydrophilic and at 298 K, the number of adsorbed water molecules was ranked as follows: PTFE < PVDF < PVC < PMMA < PPS < CSM < BD-HDI < BD-MDI < BD-TDI < PES. Furthermore, PTFE, PVDF, PVC, PES, and PPS have more stable adsorption configurations on the (0 -1 0) surface. According to the findings, hydrogen bonding dominates the interaction between water molecules and hydrophilic polymers, whereas π-π interactions increase water molecules' diffusion resistance in polymers with benzene rings. In addition, PES contains many sulfone groups and ether bonds, which disorganize the chain arrangement to provide more free volume, whereas the water adsorption rate of PTFE is reduced because its molecular chains are less convoluted and more organized.

Potato starch films by incorporating tea polyphenol and MgO nanoparticles with enhanced physical, functional and preserved properties

Due to the massive environmental pollution caused by synthetic plastic packaging accumulation and contemporary necessities of food packaging materials, the biodegradable and multifunctional bionanocomposite films based on potato starch (PS) incorporating tea polyphenol (TP) and MgO nanoparticles (MgO-NPs) were successfully fabricated by the solution casting method, and their physical and functional properties and application in fruits preservation were systematically investigated. Incorporation of TP and MgO-NPs improved the films' tensile strength, UV light-blocking, hydrophobicity and thermal stability, and decreased their moisture content (from 14.02 % to 11.21 %), water solubility (from 19.57 % to 16.56 %), and water vapor permeability (from 17.32 to 9.07 × 10^-11 g∙m^-1∙s^-1∙Pa^-1). Moreover, the PS/TP/MgO-NPs films exhibited strong antioxidant activity, and remarkable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the diameter of inhibition zone of 25.60 mm and 27.50 mm, respectively. SEM, ATR-FTIR and XRD analyses indicated the TP and MgO-NPs were dispersed homogeneously in the PS matrix, and identified the molecular interactions of hydrogen bond, hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic attraction. Biodegradability assessment showed that all the films were rapidly decomposed within ~20 days under simulated environmental conditions. Compared to control, the PS/TP/MgO-NPs film-forming solution coatings were capable of maintaining fruit quality by reducing the change in weight loss, firmness and total soluble solids. Overall, these results suggested that the multifunctional bionanocomposite films could be a potential approach for developing sustainable active food packaging.
