Preparation of Fe-MnOX/AC by high gravity method for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation of phenolic wastewater

A new strategy for utilization of gasification ash: Manganese oxides-modified activated carbon for efficient copper citrate removal

To address the challenges posed by solid waste generated from coal gasification ash, a pyrolysis self-activation method was employed to prepare activated carbon by gasification ash, followed by the modification with manganese oxide to enhance its adsorption performance. Subsequently, the removal efficiency and mechanism for copper citrate were investigated. The results demonstrated the successful preparation of manganese oxides modified gasification ash-derived activated carbon (GAC-MnOx), exhibiting a specific surface area of 158.3 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.1948 cm³/g. The kinetic process could be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.958). High removal efficiency and low concentration of dissolved Mn were observed within the pH range of 3-10, where the adsorption capacity of GAC-MnOx for copper citrate exhibited an inverse relationship with pH. Notably, the fitting results of the Langmuir model demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity of GAC-MnOx for copper citrate is determined to be 7.196 mg/g at pH 3. The adsorption capacity of GAC-MnOx was found to be significantly reduced to 0.26 mg/g as the pH decreased below 2, potentially attributed to the dissolution of Mn. The findings of the Dual-Mode model demonstrated that the copper citrate removal mechanism by GAC-MnOx involved both surface adsorption and precipitation processes as follows: the porous structure of activated carbon enables physical adsorption of copper citrate, the MnOx or oxygen-containing functional groups establish chemical bonds with copper citrate and subsequently precipitate onto the surface of the adsorbent. The physical adsorption remains predominant in the removal of copper citrate, despite a gradual decrease in its proportion with increasing pH and equilibrium concentrations. Moreover, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that copper citrate might be oxidized by MnOx to release copper ions and be retained on the surface of the adsorbent, meaning the adsorption efficiency of Cu(II)-Cit by GAC was enhanced through MnOx oxidation. This study could provide a new strategy for the high-value resource utilization of gasification ash.

A comprehensive review on metal based active sites and their interaction with O3 during heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process: Types, regulation and authentication

Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) was a promising water purification technology. Designing novel metal-based catalysts and exploring their structural-activity relationship continued to be a hot topic in HCO. Herein, we reviewed the recent development of metal-based catalysts (including monometallic and polymetallic catalysts) in HCO. Regulation of metal based active sites (surface hydroxyl groups, Lewis acid sites, metal redox cycle and surface defect) and their key roles in activating O₃ were explored. Advantage and disadvantage of conventional characterization techniques on monitoring metal active sites were claimed. In situ electrochemical characterization and DFT simulation were recommended as supplement to reveal the metal active species. Though the ambiguous interfacial behaviors of O₃ at these active sites, the existence of interfacial electron migration was beyond doubt. The reported metal-based catalysts mainly served as electron donator for O₃, which resulted in the accumulation of oxidized metal and reduced their activity. Design of polymetallic catalysts could accelerate the interfacial electron migration, but they still faced with the dilemma of sluggish Me^(n+m)+/Meⁿ⁺ redox cycle. Alternative strategies like coupling active metal species with mesoporous silicon materials, regulating surface hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties, polaring surface electron distribution, coupling HCO process with photocatalysis and H₂O₂ were proposed for future research.

State of Art and Perspectives in Catalytic Ozonation for Removal of Organic Pollutants in Water: Influence of Process and Operational Parameters

The number of organic pollutants detected in water and wastewater is continuously increasing thus causing additional concerns about their impact on public and environmental health. Therefore, catalytic processes have gained interest as they can produce radicals able to degrade recalcitrant micropollutants. Specifically, catalytic ozonation has received considerable attention due to its ability to achieve advanced treatment performances at reduced ozone doses. This study surveys and summarizes the application of catalytic ozonation in water and wastewater treatment, paying attention to both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. This review integrates bibliometric analysis using VOS viewer with systematic paper reviews, to obtain detailed summary tables where process and operational parameters relevant to catalytic ozonation are reported. New insights emerging from heterogeneous and homogenous catalytic ozonation applied to water and wastewater treatment for the removal of organic pollutants in water have emerged and are discussed in this paper. Finally, the activities of a variety of heterogeneous catalysts have been assessed using their chemical–physical parameters such as point of zero charge (PZC), pKa, and pH, which can determine the effect of the catalysts (positive or negative) on catalytic ozonation processes.
