Analysis of sulfonamides in environmental water samples based on magnetic mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction coupled with HPLC-UV detection

New two-dimensional nanocomposites combined with target-induced strategy in an electrochemical aptasensor for sensitive determination of sulfadimethoxine

Ni-Zn bimetallic organic framework nanosheets (NiZn-MOF NSs) were modified onto PEI-functionalized MXene for the first time. The combination of the two kinds of nanosheets forms a sensing platform with superior conductivity and biocompatibility. On this basis, a highly sensitive biosensor was developed for the determination of sulfadimethoxine (SDM). Furthermore, Au and Mn nanoparticles decorated reduced graphene oxide (Au-Mn/rGO) was introduced as a signal hindering molecule under the target-induced amplification strategy. When the Au-Mn/rGO-labelled SDM-binding aptamer (Au-Mn/rGO-SBA) specifically bound to target SDM, it detached from the electrode, thereby further amplifying the electrochemical signal of [Fe(CN)6]3-/4-. The developed aptasensor for SDM showed excellent response signals in the range 1 pg mL-1 to 100 ng mL-1, with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.22 pg mL-1. Significantly, the proposed sensor also showed satisfactory results in milk samples with recoveries ranging from 87.0 to 96.4% and RSD from 1.5 to 5.1%, which is believed to be useful in food safety assays.

A specific turn-on fluorescence probe for determination of nitazoxanide based on feasible oxidation reaction with hypochlorite: Applying cobalt ferrite nanoparticles for pre-concentration and extraction of its metabolite from real urine samples

Nitazoxanide is an antimicrobial compound that was originally developed as an antiprotozoal drug. Recently nitazoxanide has been identified as broad-spectrum antiviral agent and redirected for the remediation of some respiratory tract viral infections. In this study, the spectrofluorimetric technique has been applied to determine Nitazoxanide (NTX) in tablets or its metabolite, tizoxanide (TZD), in human urine samples. The developed methodology is based on oxidizing NTX (non-fluorescence) into a highly fluorescent product by sodium hypochlorite. The fluorescence emission intensity was measured at 436.5 nm after fluorescence excitation at 362.5 nm. After optimizing all conditions, the analytical procedures and bio-analytical steps were evaluated and validated using ICH and FDA criteria, respectively. The method linearity, LOQ, and LOD values of NTX were 1.0-5.0 µg/mL, 0.434, and 0.143 µg/mL, respectively. The other novelty side of the presented work is the application of cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) nanoparticles (NPs) as a magnetic solid-phase for the pre-concentration and extraction process. The synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscope and zeta sizer techniques. Finally, the utilized magnetic nanoparticles exhibited good recovery results for pre-concentration and extraction of NTX or its metabolite from spiked and real human urine samples, respectively.

Biocompatible magnetite nanoparticles coated with ionic liquid-based surfactantas a hydrophilic sorbent for dispersive solid phase microextraction of cephalosporins prior to their quantitation by HPTLC

Extraction of highly hydrophilic compounds from biological fluids including urine or plasma samples is a dilemma due to high hydrophilicity of the matrix itself. The main aim of the current work is to explore the competence of ionic liquid (IL)-based surfactant-coated mineral oxide nanoparticles (NPs) in dispersive solid-phase microextraction (d-SPME) of highly hydrophilic analytes taking cefoperazone (CPZ) as a model analyte for the study. The IL-based surfactant coated Fe₃O₄ NPs is utilized as an innovative adsorbent for the separation and pre-concentration of CPZ after intramuscular injection (I.M) in rabbits. The utilized magnetite NPs were synthesized via simple and reliable co-precipitation procedure, which doesn't require any air-free environment and depends on a single iron (III) salt. Characterization of the as-synthesized NPs was achieved by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Surface area measurements show that Fe₃O₄ NPs have large surface area of 75 m² g^-1. The developed approach utilizes the unique properties of the IL-based surfactant including multiple polar interaction types provided by the polar head in addition to merits of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, which include large adsorptive capacity and magnetic properties, to improve separation, save time, and achieve satisfactory recovery. Comprehensive study was developed for the factors, that affect the adsorption capacity such as pH, NPs amount, IL-based surfactant concentration, ionic strength, adsorption time, and desorption conditions. Moreover, the adsorption data was fitted to Langmuir and second-order kinetic models as reflected by the reasonable determination coefficients of 0.9319 and 0.9726, respectively. Under the optimized conditions, the developed approach achieves good correlation coefficient of 0.9975, and 0.9981 over linearity range of 0.7-12.0 and 4.0-50.0 µg mL^-1 for both CPZ standard solutions and spiked rabbit plasma, respectively. It also provides good sensitivity expressed by the low values of limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2 and 1.2 µg mL^-1 and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 0.7 and 4.0 µg mL^-1 for both the standard solutions and spiked plasma, respectively. The developed approach was also applied successfully for monitoring CPZ in rabbit plasma samples with satisfactory recovery % (83-110). In addition, a detailed pharmacokinetic study is performed where pharmacokinetic parameters of CPZ in rabbit plasma samples were calculated.

Microfluidic flow-injection aptamer-based chemiluminescence platform for sulfadimethoxine detection

Gold nanoparticle–catalyzed chemiluminescence (CL) of luminol is an attractive alternative to strategies relying on enzymes, as their aggregation leads to significantly enhanced CL signals. Consequently, analytes disturbing such aggregation will lead to an easy-to-quantify weakening of the signal. Based on this concept, a homogeneous aptamer-based assay for the detection of sulfadimethoxine (SDM) has been developed as a microfluidic CL flow-injection platform. Here, the efficient mixing of gold nanoparticles, aptamers, and analyte in short channel distances is of utmost importance, and two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) mixer designs made via Xurography were investigated. In the end, since 2D designs could not provide sufficient mixing, a laminated 3D 5-layer microfluidic mixer was developed and optimized with respect to mixing capability and observation by the charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. Furthermore, the performance of standard luminol and its more hydrophilic derivative m-carboxy luminol was studied identifying the hydrophilic derivative to provide tenfold more signal enhancement and reliable results. Finally, the novel detection platform was used for the specific detection of SDM via its aptamer and yielded a stunning dynamic range over 5 orders of magnitude (0.01–1000 ng/ml) and a limit of detection of 4 pg/ml. This new detection concept not only outperforms other methods for SDM detection, but can be suggested as a new flow-injection strategy for aptamer-based rapid and cost-efficient analysis in environmental monitoring and food safety.

Spectroscopy, Morphology, and Electrochemistry of Electrospun Polyamic Acid Nanofibers

Polyamic acid (PAA) nanofibers produced by using the electrospinning method were fully characterized in terms of morphology and spectroscopy. A PAA nanofiber–modified screen-printed carbon electrode was applied to the detection of selected sulfonamides by following an electroanalytical protocol. The polyamic acid (PAA) nanofibers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to study the integrity of polyamic acid functional groups as nanofibers by comparing them to chemically synthesized polyamic acid. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to confirm the morphology of the produced nanofibers and 3D arrangement at the electrode interface. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method was used to determine the surface area of the nanofibers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to study the porosity and surface roughness of the nanofibers. Electrochemical evaluation based on diffusion-controlled kinetics was applied to determine the number of electrons transferred in the system, the surface concentration of the deposited PAA thin film (2.14 × 10⁻⁶ mol/cm²), and the diffusion coefficient (D_e) for the PAA nanofiber–modified screen-printed carbon electrode (9.43 × 10⁻⁷ cm⁻²/s). The reported LODs for sulfadiazine and sulfamethazine detection are consistent with requirements for trace-level monitoring by early warning diagnostic systems.

Multi-templates surface molecularly imprinted polymer for simultaneous and rapid determination of sulfonamides and quinolones in water: effect of carbon-carbon double bond

In this work, the effect of a carrier modified with a carbon-carbon double bond (C=C) on preparing multi-templates surface molecularly imprinted polymer MIP (C=C@MIP) for simultaneous detection of sulfonamides and quinolones was investigated. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of the C=C@MIP were obviously higher than those of MIP, which is the carrier without modified C=C, suggesting that C=C played a key role in preparing MIP with higher adsorption capacities. Then, C=C@MIP was used as adsorbents for solid-phase extraction (SPE) and coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the simultaneous determination of sulfonamides and quinolones in water. The method showed excellent applicability, with the adsorption capacities of 19.92, 16.38, 12.92, 18.37, 14.49, 12.01, 16.98, 23.33, and 14.29 mg/g for SDZ, STZ, SMZ, SMX, SDM, ENRO, OFL, LOME, and GATI, respectively. The spiked recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of sulfonamides and quinolones using C=C@MIP were 81.59-100.7 % and 3.75-7.37 %, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) for SDZ, STZ, SMZ, SMX, SDM, ENRO, OFL, LOME, and GATI were 0.013, 0.012, 0.012, 0.013, 0.014, 0.012, 0.013, 0.015, and 0.015 μg/L, respectively.

Gold-Carbon Nanocomposites for Environmental Contaminant Sensing

The environmental crisis, due to the rapid growth of the world population and globalisation, is a serious concern of this century. Nanoscience and nanotechnology play an important role in addressing a wide range of environmental issues with innovative and successful solutions. Identification and control of emerging chemical contaminants have received substantial interest in recent years. As a result, there is a need for reliable and rapid analytical tools capable of performing sample analysis with high sensitivity, broad selectivity, desired stability, and minimal sample handling for the detection, degradation, and removal of hazardous contaminants. In this review, various gold–carbon nanocomposites-based sensors/biosensors that have been developed thus far are explored. The electrochemical platforms, synthesis, diverse applications, and effective monitoring of environmental pollutants are investigated comparatively.

A Review of Portable High-Performance Liquid Chromatography: the Future of the Field?

There is a growing need for chemical analyses to be performed in the field, at the point of need. Tools and techniques often found in analytical chemistry laboratories are necessary in performing these analyses, yet have, historically, been unable to do so owing to their size, cost and complexity. Technical advances in miniaturisation and liquid chromatography are enabling the translation of these techniques out of the laboratory, and into the field. Here we examine the advances that are enabling portable liquid chromatography (LC). We explore the evolution of portable instrumentation from its inception to the most recent advances, highlighting the trends in the field and discussing the necessary criteria for developing in-field solutions. While instrumentation is becoming more capable it has yet to find adoption outside of research.

Electrochemical aptasensor for sulfadimethoxine detection based on the triggered cleavage activity of nuclease P1 by aptamer-target complex

Herein, a simple and selective electrochemical method was developed for sulfadimethoxine detection based on the triggered cleavage activity of nuclease P1 by the formation of aptamer and sulfadimethoxine conjugate. After probe DNA was immobilized on gold electrode surface, aptamer DNA labeled with biotin at its 5'-terminal was then captured on electrode surface through the hybridization reaction between probe DNA and aptamer DNA. The formed double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) can block the digestion activity of Nuclease P1 towards the single-stranded probe DNA. Then, the anti-dsDNA antibody was further modified on electrode surface based on the specific interaction between dsDNA and antibody. Due to the electrostatic repulsion effect and steric-hindrance effect, a weak electrochemical signal was obtained at this electrode. However, in the presence of sulfadimethoxine, it can interact with aptamer DNA, and then the formation of dsDNA can be blocked. As a result, the probe DNA at its single-strand state can be digested by Nuclease P1, which leads to the failure of the immobilization of anti-dsDNA antibody. At this state, a strong electrochemical signal was obtained. Based on the change of the electrochemical signal, sulfadimethoxine can be detected with linear range of 0.1-500 nmol/L. The detection limit was 0.038 nmol/L. The developed method possesses high detection selectivity and sensitivity. The applicability of this method was also proved by detecting sulfadimethoxine in veterinary drug and milk with satisfactory results.

Organic Analysis of Environmental Samples Using Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array and Fluorescence Detectors: An Overview

This overview is focused to provide an useful guide of the families of organic pollutants that can be determined by liquid chromatography operating in reverse phase and ultraviolet/fluorescence detection. Eight families have been classified as the main groups to be considered: carbonyls, carboxyls, aromatics, phenols, phthalates, isocyanates, pesticides and emerging. The references have been selected based on analytical methods used in the environmental field, including both the well-established procedures and those more recently developed.

Photolysis of sulfamethazine using UV irradiation in an aqueous medium

Although many studies have been focused on the photochemistry of antibiotics, the roles of reactive species in photolysis and the effects of dissolved substances on antibiotic photochemical behavior have been poorly examined. The photolytic behaviors of sulfamethazine (SMN) in pure water were investigated via adding different scavengers to quench the active species. Results showed that decomposition of the triplet-excited state of SMN (³SMN*) by direct photolysis was the main path of SMN photolysis in water. Moreover, self-sensitized SMN cannot be ignored during SMN photodegradation. The main photoproducts of SMN were identified by LC-MS/MS, which indicated that SMN could not be mineralized although the photolysis under UV was effective. The effects of Cl⁻, NO₃⁻, and fulvic acid (FA) (common substances in natural water) on SMN photolytic behaviors were also studied. The triplet-induced halogenation of SMN increases the ionic strength and reduces the ground state SMN; these are the primary causes of promotion of SMN photolysis by Cl⁻. More ˙OH produced in the presence of NO₃⁻ could promote SMN photolysis. Competitive absorption of photons of FA with SMN and ROS scavenged by FA were the main reasons for the inhibition of SMN photolysis. The research findings are helpful for further studies on the environmental risks of ACs in natural waters and promoting the development of AC pollution treatment technology.

The role of reactive species in SMN photolysis and the effects of dissolved substances on SMN photochemical behavior.

Dispersive admicelle solid-phase extraction based on sodium dodecyl sulfate coated Fe3 O4 nanoparticles for the selective adsorption of three alkaloids in Gegen-Qinlian oral liquid before high-performance liquid chromatography

A novel dispersive admicelle solid-phase extraction method based on sodium dodecyl sulfate-coated Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles was developed for the selective adsorption of berberine, coptisine, and palmatine in Gegen-Qinlian oral liquid before high-performance liquid chromatography. Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles were synthesized by a chemical coprecipitation method and characterized by using transmission electron microscopy. Under acidic conditions, the surface of Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles was coated with sodium dodecyl sulfate to form a nano-sized admicelle magnetic sorbent. Owing to electrostatic interaction, the alkaloids were adsorbed onto the oppositely charged admicelle magnetic nanoparticles. The quick separation of the analyte-adsorbed nanoparticles from the sample solution was performed by using Nd-Fe-B magnet. Best extraction efficiency was achieved under the following conditions: 800 μL Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles suspension (20 mg/mL), 150 μL sodium dodecyl sulfate solution (10 mg/mL), pH 2, and vortexing time 2 min for the extraction of alkaloids from 10 mL of diluted sample. Four hundred microliters of methanol was used to desorb the alkaloids by vortexing for 1 min. Satisfactory extraction recoveries were obtained in the range of 85.9-120.3%, relative standard deviations for intra- and interday precisions were less than 6.3 and 10.0%, respectively. Finally, the established method was successfully applied to analyze the alkaloids in two batches of Gegen-Qinlian oral liquids.

Identification of antibiotics in wastewater: current state of extraction protocol and future perspectives

The release and occurrence of antibiotics in the aquatic environment has generated increased attention in the past few decades. The residual antibiotic in wastewater is important in the selection for antimicrobial resistance among microorganisms and the possibility of forming toxic derivatives. This review presents an assessment of the advancement in methods for extraction of antibiotics with solid phase extraction and liquid-liquid extraction methods applied in different aquatic environmental media. These advanced methods do enhance specificity, and also exhibit high accuracy and recovery. The aim of this review is to assess the pros and cons of the methods of extraction towards identification of quinolones and sulphonamides as examples of relevant antibiotics in wastewater. The challenges associated with the improvements are also examined with a view of providing potential perspectives for better extraction and identification protocols in the near future. From the context of this review, magnetic molecular imprinted polymer is superior over the remaining extraction methods (with the availability of commercial templates and monomers), is based on less cumbersome extraction procedures, uses less solvent and has the advantage of its reusable magnetic phase.

Magnetic mixed hemimicelle solid-phase extraction based on mixed hemi-/ad-micelle SDS-coated magnetic nanoparticles Fe2-xAlxO3 (x = 0.4) for the fluorimetric determination of carvedilol in biological samples

Mixed hemi-/ad-micelle SDS-coated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe2-xAlxO3 (x = 0.4)) were used as an efficient adsorbent for the extraction and preconcentration of carvedilol (CVD) based on magnetic mixed hemimicelle solid-phase extraction. The Fe2-xAlxO3 magnetic nanoparticles not only have better stability and resistance to acidity, as well as alkalinity, but also are easy to prepare, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. Several parameters that affected the extraction efficiency were investigated, including the type and volume of desorption solvent, extraction and desorption times, pH of the solution, zeta potential, and amounts of adsorbent and surfactant. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the developed method showed good linearity (R2 = 0.9998) within the range of 0.02–2.7 ng mL−1, and the limit of detection was 0.009 ng mL−1. The spiked recoveries of CVD in urine and plasma samples ranged from 101.50% to 111.00%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a mixed hemi-/ad-micelle solid-phase extraction method based on magnetic separation and nanoparticles has been used as a simple and sensitive method for the monitoring of CVD in biological samples.

A colorimetric aptasensor for sulfadimethoxine detection based on peroxidase-like activity of graphene/nickel@palladium hybrids

A sensitive, rapid and label-free colorimetric aptasensor for sulfadimethoxine (SDM) detection was developed based on the tunable peroxidase-like activity of graphene/nickel@palladium nanoparticle (Gr/Ni@Pd) hybrids. The addition of the SDM aptamer could inhibit the peroxidase-like catalytic activity of the hybrids. However, the target SDM and aptamer could be triggered tightly and recover the catalytic activity of the Gr/Ni@Pd hybrids. Due to the peroxidase-like catalytic activity, Gr/Ni@Pd could catalyze the decomposition of H₂O₂ with releasing hydroxyl radicals which further oxidized reagent 3, 3', 5, 5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to oxTMB accompanied with a colorless-to-blue color change. The original color change could be applied to obtain quantitative detection of SDM, due to the relationship between the concentration of the target and the color difference. As a result, this approach performed a linear response for SDM from 1 to 500 ng/mL with a limit detection of 0.7 ng/mL (S/N = 3) under the optimized conditions and realized the detection of SDM in spiked lake water samples. Therefore, this colorimetric aptasensor was an alternative assay for SDM detection in real water. Moreover, with its design principle, this work might be applied to detecting other small molecule by employing appropriate aptamer.

Platform construction and extraction mechanism study of magnetic mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction

Simple, accurate and high-throughput pretreatment method would facilitate large-scale studies of trace analysis in complex samples. Magnetic mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction has the power to become a key pretreatment method in biological, environmental and clinical research. However, lacking of experimental predictability and unsharpness of extraction mechanism limit the development of this promising method. Herein, this work tries to establish theoretical-based experimental designs for extraction of trace analytes from complex samples using magnetic mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction. We selected three categories and six sub-types of compounds for systematic comparative study of extraction mechanism, and comprehensively illustrated the roles of different force (hydrophobic interaction, π-π stacking interactions, hydrogen-bonding interaction, electrostatic interaction) for the first time. What’s more, the application guidelines for supporting materials, surfactants and sample matrix were also summarized. The extraction mechanism and platform established in the study render its future promising for foreseeable and efficient pretreatment under theoretical based experimental design for trace analytes from environmental, biological and clinical samples.

An eco-friendly method for analysis of sulfonamides in water samples using a multi-pumping system

A new methodology for determination of sulfonamides (sulfaquinoxaline, sulfathiazole, and sulfadimethoxine) in water samples was developed by coupling an automated multi-pumping flow system (MPFS) with a liquid waveguide capillary cell (LWCC; pathlength, 100 cm) and a spectrophotometric detector. The method is based on the reaction between sulfonamides and p-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde (p-DAC) in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) in dilute acid medium (hydrochloric acid), with measurement of the reaction products at 565 nm. Experimental design methodology was used to optimize the analytical conditions. The linear range obtained was 10.0–130.0 μg/L, and detection and quantification limits were 3.1 and 10.1 μg/L, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of sulfonamides in water samples. By coupling the MPFS with the LWCC, the sensitivity was enhanced, reagent consumption was low, and waste generation was minimized. The results obtained with the MPFS method were confirmed by LC–MS.

Analysis of sulfonamides in soil, sediment, and sludge based on dynamic microwave-assisted micellar extraction

A green and high-throughput analytical method was described for the simultaneous determination of ten sulfonamides (SAs) from soil, sediment, and sludge in northeast China. None of potentially hazardous organic solvents was used in the whole sample preparation procedure, and the total preparation time of 15 samples was about 18 min. The limits of detection for the SAs were in the range of 0.42-0.68 ng g(-1). The intra-day and inter-day precisions, expressed by the relative standard deviation, were below 7 %. Under the optimum conditions, the recoveries of ten SAs were between 69.7 and 102.7 %. The proposed method was successfully applied to analyze the SAs residues in agricultural soils, river sediments, and sewage sludge. SAs were found at the levels of 1.40-2.31 ng g(-1) and 3.77-29.29 ng g(-1) in the sediments and sludge, respectively. The aging effect of spiked soil samples on the SAs recoveries was examined, and the results demonstrate that eight SAs could persist in five soils for 3 months. Compared with the traditional method, the proposed method could reduce the consumption of the organic solvent, shorten the sample preparation time, and increase the sample throughput.

The joint effects of sulfonamides and quorum sensing inhibitors on Vibrio fischeri: Differences between the acute and chronic mixed toxicity mechanisms

Quorum sensing inhibitors (QSIs) are considered to be promising antibiotic alternatives and will be increasingly exposed to the environment together with antibiotics after their research and development process; it is therefore necessary to study the joint effects of QSIs and antibiotics. In this study, single and mixed toxicity of sulfonamide (SAs) and QSIs under acute and chronic conditions and their corresponding toxicity mechanisms were investigated. The results indicated that the acute joint effect was extremely complex, ranging from an antagonistic to synergistic response, while the chronic joint effect was primarily an antagonistic response. Using a molecular docking and regression model, we found that the acute joint effect could be determined by the hydrion's, ability to be oxidized, as well as the binding energy. The chronic joint effect was primarily an antagonistic response, which was due to the QSI competing against AHL for luxR generated by SAs, leading to negative effects of the QSI-luxR complexes on luxI. This phenomenon eventually weakened the stimulatory effect caused by SAs. Finally, the main differences between acute and chronic mixtures were analyzed: (1) The target protein was different between acute and chronic toxicity mixtures, and (2) effective concentration in acute and chronic toxicity mixtures was also different. These deep insights into mixed toxicity mechanisms will play an important role in the study of antibiotic resistance genes in response to antibiotic replacements.

Mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction based on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-coated nano-magnets for the spectrophotometric determination of Fingolomid in biological fluids

In this study, mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction (SPE) based on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-coated nano-magnets Fe3O4 was investigated as a novel method for the separation and determination of Fingolimod (FLM) in water, urine and plasma samples prior to spectrophotometeric determination. Due to the high surface area of these new sorbents and the excellent adsorption capacity after surface modification by SDS, satisfactory extraction recoveries can be produced. The main factors affecting the adsolubilization of analysts, such as pH, surfactant and adsorbent amounts, ionic strength, extraction time and desorption conditions were studied and optimized. Under the selected conditions, FLM has been quantitatively extracted. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by recovery measurements on spiked samples, and good recoveries of 96%, 95% and 88% were observed for water, urine and plasma respectively. Proper linear behaviors over the investigated concentration ranges of 2-26, 2-17 and 2-13 mg/L with good coefficients of determination, 0.998, 0.997 and 0.995 were achieved for water, urine and plasma samples, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a mixed hemimicelles SPE method based on magnetic separation and nanoparticles has been used as a simple and sensitive method for monitoring of FLM in water and biological samples.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction based on modified ferum oxides for enrichment, preconcentration, and isolation of pesticides and selected pollutants

Recently, a simple, rapid, high-efficiency, selective, and sensitive method for isolation, preconcentration, and enrichment of analytes has been developed. This new method of sample handling is based on ferum oxides as magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and has been used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of various analytes from various matrices. This review focuses on the applications of modified ferum oxides, especially modified Fe3O4 MNPs, as MSPE adsorbent for pesticide isolation from various matrices. Further perspectives on MSPE based on modified Fe3O4 for inorganic metal ions, organic compounds, and biological species from water samples are also presented. Ferum(III) oxide MNPs (Fe2O3) are also highlighted.

Validated univariate and multivariate spectrophotometric methods for the determination of pharmaceuticals mixture in complex wastewater

Five, accurate, precise, and sensitive univariate and multivariate spectrophotometric methods were developed for the simultaneous determination of a ternary mixture containing Trimethoprim (TMP), Sulphamethoxazole (SMZ) and Oxytetracycline (OTC) in waste water samples collected from different cites either production wastewater or livestock wastewater after their solid phase extraction using OASIS HLB cartridges. In univariate methods OTC was determined at its λmax 355.7 nm (0D), while (TMP) and (SMZ) were determined by three different univariate methods. Method (A) is based on successive spectrophotometric resolution technique (SSRT). The technique starts with the ratio subtraction method followed by ratio difference method for determination of TMP and SMZ. Method (B) is successive derivative ratio technique (SDR). Method (C) is mean centering of the ratio spectra (MCR). The developed multivariate methods are principle component regression (PCR) and partial least squares (PLS). The specificity of the developed methods is investigated by analyzing laboratory prepared mixtures containing different ratios of the three drugs. The obtained results are statistically compared with those obtained by the official methods, showing no significant difference with respect to accuracy and precision at p=0.05.

A review of biosensing techniques for detection of trace carcinogen contamination in food products

Carcinogen contaminations in the food chain, for example heavy metal ions, pesticides, acrylamide, and mycotoxins, have caused serious health problems. A major objective of food-safety research is the identification and prevention of exposure to these carcinogens, because of their impossible-to-reverse tumorigenic effects. However, carcinogen detection is difficult because of their trace-level presence in food. Thus, reliable and accurate separation and determination methods are essential to protect food safety and human health. This paper summarizes the state of the art in separation and determination methods for analyzing carcinogen contamination, especially the advances in biosensing methods. Furthermore, the application of promising technology including nanomaterials, imprinted polymers, and microdevices is detailed. Challenges and perspectives are also discussed.

Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction Applied to Food Analysis

Magnetic solid phase extraction has been used as pretreatment technique for the analysis of several compounds because of its advantages when it is compared with classic methods. This methodology is based on the use of magnetic solids as adsorbents for preconcentration of different analytes from complex matrices. Magnetic solid phase extraction minimizes the use of additional steps such as precipitation, centrifugation, and filtration which decreases the manipulation of the sample. In this review, we describe the main procedures used for synthesis, characterization, and application of this pretreatment technique which were applied in food analysis.

Recent advances in sample preparation techniques and methods of sulfonamides detection - A review

Sulfonamides (SAs) have been the most widely used antimicrobial drugs for more than 70 years, and their residues in foodstuffs and environmental samples pose serious health hazards. For this reason, sensitive and specific methods for the quantification of these compounds in numerous matrices have been developed. This review intends to provide an updated overview of the recent trends over the past five years in sample preparation techniques and methods for detecting SAs. Examples of the sample preparation techniques, including liquid-liquid and solid-phase extraction, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and QuEChERS, are given. Different methods of detecting the SAs present in food and feed and in environmental, pharmaceutical and biological samples are discussed.
