Nitrous oxide and methane emission from a flooded rice field as influenced by separate and combined application of herbicides bensulfuron methyl and pretilachlor

Common use herbicides increase wetland greenhouse gas emissions

Wetlands play a disproportionate role in the global climate as major sources and sinks of greenhouse gases. Herbicides are the most heavily used agrochemicals and are frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems, with glyphosate and 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), representing the two most commonly used worldwide. In recent years, these herbicides are being used in mixtures to combat herbicide-tolerant noxious weeds. While it is well documented that herbicide use for agriculture is expected to increase, their indirect effects on wetland greenhouse gas dynamics are virtually unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a factorial microcosm experiment using low, medium, and high concentrations of glyphosate or 2,4-D, individually and in combination to investigate their effects on wetland methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide fluxes. We predicted that mixed herbicide treatments would have a synergistic effect on greenhouse gases compared to individual herbicides. Our results showed that carbon dioxide flux rates and cumulative emissions significantly increased from both individual and mixed herbicide treatments, whereas methane and nitrous oxide dynamics were less affected. This study suggests that extensive use of glyphosate and 2,4-D may increase carbon dioxide emissions from wetlands, which could have implications for climate change.

A global meta-analysis of yield-scaled N2 O emissions and its mitigation efforts for maize, wheat, and rice

Maintaining or even increasing crop yields while reducing nitrous oxide (N2 O) emissions is necessary to reconcile food security and climate change, while the metric of yield-scaled N2 O emission (i.e., N2 O emissions per unit of crop yield) is at present poorly understood. Here we conducted a global meta-analysis with more than 6000 observations to explore the variation patterns and controlling factors of yield-scaled N2 O emissions for maize, wheat and rice and associated potential mitigation options. Our results showed that the average yield-scaled N2 O emissions across all available data followed the order wheat (322 g N Mg-1 , with the 95% confidence interval [CI]: 301-346) > maize (211 g N Mg-1 , CI: 198-225) > rice (153 g N Mg-1 , CI: 144-163). Yield-scaled N2 O emissions for individual crops were generally higher in tropical or subtropical zones than in temperate zones, and also showed a trend towards lower intensities from low to high latitudes. This global variation was better explained by climatic and edaphic factors than by N fertilizer management, while their combined effect predicted more than 70% of the variance. Furthermore, our analysis showed a significant decrease in yield-scaled N2 O emissions with increasing N use efficiency or in N2 O emissions for production systems with cereal yields >10 Mg ha-1 (maize), 6.6 Mg ha-1 (wheat) or 6.8 Mg ha-1 (rice), respectively. This highlights that N use efficiency indicators can be used as valuable proxies for reconciling trade-offs between crop production and N2 O mitigation. For all three major staple crops, reducing N fertilization by up to 30%, optimizing the timing and placement of fertilizer application or using enhanced-efficiency N fertilizers significantly reduced yield-scaled N2 O emissions at similar or even higher cereal yields. Our data-driven assessment provides some key guidance for developing effective and targeted mitigation and adaptation strategies for the sustainable intensification of cereal production.

Changes in soil fertility under partial organic substitution of chemical fertilizer: a 33-year trial

BACKGROUND

This study examined the changes in soil fertility in a maize cropping area when chemical fertilizer was partially replaced with straw or livestock manure over a 33-year period. Four treatments were included: (i) CK (no fertilizer application); (ii) NPK (only chemical fertilizer application); (iii) NPKM (chemical fertilizer partly replaced with livestock manure); (iv) NPKS (chemical fertilizer partly replaced with straw).

RESULTS

Soil organic carbon increased by 41.7% and 95.5% in the NPKS and NPKM treatments, respectively, over the 33-year trial compared with the initial concentration. However, soil organic carbon in NPK was significantly reduced by 9.8%. Soil total N, P and K increased in both NPKM and NPKS treatments compared to the original soil. Soil pH was significantly acidified from 7.6 to 5.97 in the NPK treatment during the experimental period. The NPKM and NPKS treatments buffered the acidification compared to NPK. Meta-analysis results showed that, compared with NPK, NPKM significantly raised soil bacteria and fungi populations by 38.7% and 58.6%; enhanced microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen by 66.3% and 63%, respectively; and increased sucrase, urease and catalase activities by 34.2%, 48.2% and 21.5%. NPKS significantly increased soil fungi and actinomycetes populations by 24.3% and 41.2%, respectively; enhanced microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen by 27.1% and 45%; and strengthened sucrase and urease activities by 36% and 20.3%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Long-term chemical fertilizer application led to the deterioration of soil fertility and environment. Partial replacement of chemical fertilizers with organic materials could significantly amend and buffer such negative effects. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Application of thifluzamide alters microbial network structure and affects methane cycle genes in rice-paddy soil

Thifluzamide is an effective agent for controlling rice sheath blight and has a long half-life in soil. However, the effects of thifluzamide on the abundance of microbes harboring methane-cycle genes and soil microbial community assembly patterns are not well known. Thus, we conducted a three-month indoor mesocosm experiment to ascertain the effects of thifluzamide (0.05, 0.5, and 5 mg kg^-1 soil; 0.05 mg kg^-1 soil being recommended) on bacterial and archaeal community structure and on the abundance of methanogen genes using two typical paddy soils: sandy soil from Hangzhou (HZ) and loam sandy soil from Jiansanjiang (JSJ). The effects of thifluzamide on soil microorganisms were related to soil type. In JSJ loam sandy soil, thifluzamide significantly increased bacterial α diversity after 7-30 d and archaeal α diversity at 30 and 60 d. In HZ sandy soil, however, α diversity did not change significantly. Network analysis showed that thifluzamide-treated soils possessed more complex networks with more total nodes and links, a higher average degree of connectivity, and more keystone species. Thifluzamide application increased the number of keystone species associated with methane production in both types of paddy soil. A relatively greater number of modules were significantly negatively correlated with mcrA abundance in the HZ T10 network, but more modules were positively correlated with mcrA abundance in the JSJ T100 network. The half-life of thifluzamide varied for the different doses, i.e., from 152.0 to 419.6 d. The results reveal that methane-cycle genes, soil microbiome assembly, and interactions among microbial species all change in response to thifluzamide stress.

A new approach to suppress methane emissions from rice cropping systems using ethephon

Rice is the main staple food for more than half of the world's population. Yet, rice cultivation is subjected to criticism because of its important role in methane (CH₄) emissions. Although several agronomic practices such as controlled irrigation and conservation tillage have been widely adopted to mitigate CH₄ emissions from rice cultivation, the benefits gained by these practices are highly dependent on site-specific soil and climate conditions, and often offset by yield reduction. The use of plant growth regulating compounds having the potential to increase the crop yield and mitigate CH₄ emissions may be an innovative approach to sustainable agriculture. Ethylene (C₂H₄), a plant growth regulator is known to have a strong inhibitory effect on methanogenesis. However, due to gaseous form and low water solubility, C₂H₄ has not been used to suppress methanogenesis in paddy fields. To develop C₂H₄ as a prospective soil amendment for reducing methane (CH₄) emissions, ethephon (2-Chloroethylphosphonic acid), a precursor of C₂H₄ was tested. We found that ethephon reduced CH₄ formation by 43%, similar to other well known methanogenic inhibitors (2-Bromoethanesulfonate, 2-Chlomoethanesulfonate, 2-Mercaptoethanesulfonate). However, ethephon rapidly hydrolyzed to C₂H₄ and methanogenic activity recuperated completely after C₂H₄ removal. To slow down the release of C₂H₄, ethephon was mixed with bio-degradable polymers such as cellulose acetate and applied to paddy soils. We found that compared with the control, the C₂H₄ release of ethephon slowed down to 90 days, and the CH₄ emissions were reduced by 90%. The application of ethephon at lower concentrations did not significantly alter bacterial communities, their relative abundance, and the abundance of methanotrophs, but it significantly reduced archaeal communities and the relative abundance and expression level of methanogens in paddy soils. Results suggest that cellulose acetate-mixed ethephon has great promise to suppress CH₄ emissions in rice paddies while ensuring sustainable yields.

Greenhouse gas emission from rice fields: a review from Indian context

Agricultural soil acts as a source and sink of important greenhouse gases (GHGs) like methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2). Rice paddies have been a major concern to scientific community, because they produce the threatening and long-lasting GHGs mainly CH4 and N2O. Around 30% and 11% of global agricultural CH4 and N2O, respectively, emitted from rice fields. Thus, it is urgent to concurrently quantify the fluxes of CH4 and N2O to improve understanding of both the gases from rice fields and to develop mitigation strategies for upcoming climate change reduction. An effort is being made in this review to discuss exclusively the emission of CH4 and N2O under normal and controlled conditions in different locations of India and also addresses the current synthesis of available data on how field and crop management activities influence CH4 and N2O emissions in rice fields. Making changes to conventional crop management regimes could have a significant impact on reducing GHG emissions from rice field. Environmental and agricultural factors related to soil could be easily altered by management practices. So, knowing the mechanism of CH4 and N2O production and release in the rice field and factors controlling the emissions is fundamental to develop well-organized strategies to reduce emissions from rice cultivated soil. This will help the regulatory bodies or policy makers to formulate adequate policies for agricultural farmers to refine the GHG emissions as well as minimize the global climate change.

Herbicide applications increase greenhouse gas emissions of alfalfa pasture in the inland arid region of northwest China

Herbicides are used to control weeds in agricultural crops such as alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), which is a forage crop. It is unclear what, if any, effect herbicides have on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when used on alfalfa. Our study was conducted in 2017 and 2018 to investigate the effects of two herbicides (Quizalofop-p-ethyl, QE and Bentazone, BT) on methane (CH₄), carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from soil planted with alfalfa. QE is used to control grasses and BT is used for broadleaf weed control. Soil CO₂ emissions and soil uptake of CH₄ increased significantly in both years following the QE and BT treatments, although CO₂ emissions differed significantly between the trial years. N₂O emissions decreased relative to the control and showed no significant differences between the trial years. The application of QE and BT on alfalfa resulted in a significant increase in CO₂ emissions which contributed to a significant increase in GHG emissions. The application of QE influenced GHG emissions more than BT. We demonstrated the potential effect that herbicide applications have on GHG fluxes, which are important when considering the effect of agricultural practices on GHG emissions and the potential for global warming over the next 100 years.

Greenhouse gas emissions and energy exchange in wet and dry season rice: eddy covariance-based approach

Lowland tropical rice-rice system has a unique micrometrological characteristic that affects both energy component and net ecosystem energy. Periodic and seasonal variations of methane (CH₄), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and energy exchange from irrigated lowland rice-rice ecosystem were studied using open-path eddy covariance (EC) system during the dry (DS) and wet (WS) seasons in 2015. Concurrently, the manual chamber method was employed in nitrous oxide (N₂O) measurement efflux. Cumulative net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) was observed highest (- 232.55 g C m^-2) during the WS and lowest (- 14.81 g C m^-2) during wet fallow (WF). Similarly, the cumulative net ecosystem methane exchange (NEME) was found highest (13,456.5 mg CH₄ m^-2) during the WS and lowest (2014.3 mg CH₄ m^-2) during the WF. Surface energy fluxes, i.e., sensible (Hs) and latent heat (LE) fluxes, showed a similar trend. With the advancement of time, the ratio of ecosystem respiration (Re) and gross primary production (GPP) increased. The cumulative global warming potential (GWP) for the two cropping seasons including two fallows was 13,224.1 kg CO₂ equivalent ha^-1. The GWP and NEME showed a similar trend as soil enzymes and labile carbon pools in both seasons (except GWP at the harvesting stage in the wet season). The mean NEE exhibited a more negative value with decrease in labile pools from panicle initiation to harvesting stage in the WS. Soil labile C and soil enzymes can be used as an indicator of NEE, NEME, and GWP in lowland rice ecology. Graphical abstract Schematic presentation of GHG emission and energy exchange in lowland rice.
