Abstract
The study applied a tiered ecological risk assessment method to evaluate the long-term status and trend of the ecological risks of dissolved heavy metals from 2011 to 2019 in the Yangtze River Estuary and Zhejiang coastal waters, China. The results for spring, summer, and autumn of 2019 indicated that Pb, Cd, and Zn posed no adverse ecological risk, Cu posed a potential ecological risk, and As posed an ecological risk. The annual results from 2011 to 2019 suggested that Pb, Cd, and Zn posed no adverse ecological risks, and As and Cu posed an ecological risk. The trend analysis in the nine years showed that the ecological risk of Cu is gradually decreasing, while that of As is still a concern. The overall trend is attributed to the environmental protection policies that reduced these contaminants' terrestrial sources and atmospheric sources.

Abstract
Ecological risk assessment of emerging contaminants (ECs) is an international research hotspot and is also the focus of China's "14th Five-Year Plan". The Greater Bay Area (GBA) is one of the four major bay areas in the world and the most dynamic region in China. However, there are few studies on the risk assessment of ECs in the GBA, and there needs to be a systematic and comprehensive assessment of the ecological risk of ECs. We selectively collected environmental concentration and toxicity data reported in the literature before 2022 for 50 representative ECs. We use risk quotient (RQ), semi-probability, Margin of Safety (MOS), and joint Probability curve (JPC) methods for multiple-level risk assessment. The RQ results showed that there were primary ecological risks in 20 ECs. Nine ECs were screened by the semi-probability, MOS, and JPC methods. The total risk probability of nonylphenol (NP) to the GBA was 12.11 %, and the risk to the aquatic ecological environment was the highest, followed by α-endosulfan (α-END) and erythromycin (ERY). At the same time, a comprehensive assessment method was adopted to screen the list of medium and high-risk priority pollutants in the GBA. According to the comprehensive evaluation results, although the risk is low, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) still deserves widespread attention. The results showed that NP, α-END, ERY, and PFOA may be the most concerned ECs in the GBA. This research fills the gap on the ECs ecological risk assessment of the GBA and can provide a theoretical reference for managers in the follow-up of ECs regulatory governance.

A QSAR-ICE-SSD model prediction of the PNECs for alkylphenol substances and application in ecological risk assessment for rivers of a megacity. ENVIRONMENT INTERNATIONAL 2022; 167:107367. Abstract
Alkylphenols (APs) are ubiquitous and generally present in higher residue levels in the environment. The present work focuses on the development of a set of in silico models to predict the aquatic toxicity of APs with incomplete/unknown toxicity data in aquatic environments. To achieve this, a QSAR-ICE-SSD model was constructed for aquatic organisms by combining quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), interspecies correlation estimation (ICE), and species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models in order to obtain the hazardous concentrations (HCs) of selected APs. The research indicated that the keywords "alkylphenol" and "nonylphenol" were most commonly studied. The selected ICE models were robust (R2: 0.70-0.99; p-value < 0.01). All models had a high reliability cross- validation success rates (>75%), and the HC5 predicted with the QSAR-ICE-SSD model was 2-fold than that derived with measured experimental data. The HC5 values demonstrated nearly linear decreasing trend from 2-MP to 4-HTP, while the decreasing trend from 4-HTP to 4-DP became shallower, indicates that the toxicity of APs to aquatic organisms increases with the addition of alkyl carbon chain lengths. The ecological risks assessment (ERA) of APs revealed that aquatic organisms were at risk from exposure to 4-NP at most river stations (the highest risk quotient (RQ) = 1.51), with the highest relative risk associated with 2.9% of 4-NP detected in 82.9% of the sampling sites. The targeted APs posed potential ecological risks in the Yongding and Beiyun River according to the mixture ERA. The potential application of QSAR-ICE-SSD models could satisfy the immediate needs for HC5 derivations without the need for additional in vivo testing.

Tiered ecological risk assessment of nonylphenol and tetrabromobisphenol A in the surface waters of China based on the augmented species sensitivity distribution models. ECOTOXICOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY 2022; 236:113446. Abstract
The ecological risks of nonylphenol (NP) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) have received continued attention owing to their large consumption, frequently detection, adverse effects on the reproductive fitness, and lack of risk assessment technical systems. The geometric mean of the median concentrations of NP in the 22 surface waters was 0.278 μg/L, and TBBPA in the seven surface waters was 0.014 μg/L in China. The species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models were augmented by extrapolated reproductive toxicity data of native species to reduce uncertainty. The SSD models and the hazardous concentrations for 5% of species exhibited good robustness and reliability using the bootstrap method and minimum sample size determination. The acute and reproductive predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) were derived as 9.88 and 0.187 μg/L for NP, and 56.6 and 0.0878 μg/L for TBBPA, respectively. The risk quotients indicated that 11 of 22 locations for NP, and 3 of 7 locations for TBBPA were at high ecological risk levels based on the reproductive PNECs. Furthermore, the higher tier ecological risk assessment (ERA) based on potential affected fraction and joint probability curves indicated that the ecological risks in the four of above locations needed further concern. The ERA based on both the acute and reproductive toxicity is essential for assessing the ecological risks of NP and TBBPA, otherwise using acute PNECs only may result in an underestimation of ecological risk. The developed tiered ERA method and its framework can provide accurate, detailed, quantitative, locally applicable, and economically technical support for ERA of typical endocrine-disrupting chemicals in China.

WATER RESEARCH 2022; 214:118189. Abstract
Effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs) are an important source of estrogenic substances to the receiving water bodies affecting their ecological safety. In this study, steroids, bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates were assessed in the secondary (SE) and tertiary effluent (TE) of three typical urban STPs in Beijing (China). In addition, the overall estrogenic activity in these effluents was assessed by an in-vitro bioassay (ERE-CALUX). Results showed that the concentrations and activities of estrogenic compounds in TE were lower than those in SE. The residual concentration of 17β-estradiol (E2) was the highest among the detected steroids, accounting for 51.6 ± 5.1% in SE and 57.5 ± 24.8% in TE. The residual level (25.2-41.6 ng/L) of BPA in effluents was significantly higher than that of steroids (0.2-28.8 ng/L). The residual concentration of diethyl phthalate was the highest among the detected phthalates accounting for 47.1 ± 5.1% in SE and 37.6 ± 11.5% in TE. Steroids and BPA had a higher removal rate (83.5% and 96.7%) in secondary and tertiary treatment than phthalates (68.8% and 83.1%). The hydrophobic characteristics of these estrogenic compounds determined the removal mechanism. The removal of steroids, BPA, dimethyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate (LogKow= 1.61-4.15) mainly occurred through biodegradation in the water phase, while the removal of dibutyl phthalate, butylbenzyl phthalate and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (LogKow= 4.27-7.50) mainly occurred in the solid phase after adsorption on and sedimentation of the suspended particulate matter. According to ERE-CALUX, the estrogenic activity in the final STP effluents was 3.2-45.6 ng E2-equivalents/L, which is higher than reported levels in the effluents of European STPs. Calculation of estrogenic equivalents by using substance specific chemical analysis indicated that the dominant contributor was E2 (56.4-88.4%), followed by 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) (4.1-34.8%), both also exerting a moderate risk to the aquatic ecosystem. While the upgrade of treatment processes in STPs has efficiently reduced the emission of estrogenic substances, their ecological risk was not yet phased out.

Abstract
Nonylphenol (NP) residues, as a typical endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC), frequently exist in sewage, surface water, groundwater and even drinking water, which poses a serious threat to human health due to its bioaccumulation. In order to remove NP, a series of MIL-100(Fe)/ZnFe2O4/flake-like porous carbon nitride (MIL/ZC) was synthesized through in-situ synthesis at room temperature. High performance of ternary MIL/ZC is used to degrade NP under visible light irradiation. The results show that 30MIL/ZC2 (20 wt.% ZnFe2O4) ternary composite had the best photocatalytic activity (99.84%) when the dosage was 30 mg. Further mechanism analysis shows that the excellent photocatalytic activity of 30MIL/ZC2 could be ascribed to the double charge transfer process between flake-like porous carbon nitride (PCN) and other catalysts in the ternary heterojunction, and the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs was more effective. In addition, the 30MIL/ZC2 also showed high stability after five cycles of the photodegradation reaction. Furthermore, the active substance (•O2-) was considered to be the main active substance in the NP degradation process. Based on the research results, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism of 30MIL/ZC2 ternary composite was proposed and discussed in detail.

Abstract
A low cost and effective indirect competitive method is reported to detect five EDCs, 17-beta-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), bisphenol A (BPA), diethylstilbestrol (DES), and nonylphenol (NP) simultaneously, based on suspension array technology (SAT). Five kinds of complete antigens (E2-BSA, E3-BSA, BPA-BSA, DES-BPA, NP-BSA) were coupled to different encoding microspheres using purpose-made solutions in our laboratory instead of commercially available amino coupling kits; the method was further optimized for determination and reducing the cost. Encoding and signaling fluorescence of the particles are determined at 635/532 nm emission wavelengths. High-throughput curves of five EDCs were draw and the limit of detection (LOD) were between 0.0010 ng mL-1 ~ 0.0070 ng mL-1. Compared with traditional ELISA methods, the SAT exhibited better specificity and sensitivity. Experiments using spiked milk and tap water samples were also carried out, and the recovery was between 85 and 110%; the results also confirmed good repeatability and reproducibility. It illustrated great potential of the present strategy in the detection of EDCs in actual samples.

Abstract
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC) are a wide group of chemicals that interfere with the endocrine system. Their similarity to natural steroid hormones makes them able to attach to hormone receptors, thereby causing unfavorable health effects. Among EDC, bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and nonylphenol (NP) seem to be particularly harmful. As the industry is experiencing rapid expansion, BPA, BPS, and NP are being produced in growing amounts, generating considerable environmental pollution. White rot fungi (WRF) are an economical, ecologically friendly, and socially acceptable way to remove EDC contamination from ecosystems. WRF secrete extracellular ligninolytic enzymes such as laccase, manganese peroxidase, lignin peroxidase, and versatile peroxidase, involved in lignin deterioration. Owing to the broad substrate specificity of these enzymes, they are able to remove numerous xenobiotics, including EDC. Therefore, WRF seem to be a promising tool in the abovementioned EDC elimination during wastewater treatment processes. Here, we review WRF application for this EDC removal from wastewater and indicate several strengths and limitations of such methods.

Abstract
The sensitivity of individual organisms towards toxic agents is an important indicator of environmental pollution. However, organism-specific quantification of sensitivity towards pollutants remains a challenge. In this study, we determined the sensitivity of Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) and Scenedesmus quadricauda (S. quadricauda) towards three ionic liquids (ILs), 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chlorides [Cnmim][Cl] (n = 4,6,8). We kept all external parameters constant to identify the biotic parameters responsible for discrepancies in species sensitivity, and used flow cytometry to determine four conventional endpoints to characterise cell viability and cell vitality. Our results demonstrate that after exposure to the ILs, cell proliferation was inhibited in both species. At the same time, the cell size, complexity and membrane permeability of both algae also increased. However, while Chl a synthesis by S. quadricauda was inhibited, that of C. vulgaris was enhanced. S. quadricauda has evolved a metabolic defense that can counteract the decreased esterase activity that has been shown to occur in the presence of ILs. While it is likely that S. quadricauda was less sensitive than C. vulgaris to the ILs because of this metabolic defense, this alga may also exhibit better membrane resistance towards ILs.

Ecological risk assessment of fifty pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in Chinese surface waters: A proposed multiple-level system. ENVIRONMENT INTERNATIONAL 2020; 136:105454. [PMID: 32032889 DOI: 10.1016/j.envint.2019.105454] [Citation(s) in RCA: 156] [Impact Index Per Article: 39.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/26/2019] [Revised: 12/26/2019] [Accepted: 12/26/2019] [Indexed: 05/17/2023]
Abstract
Interest in the risks posed by trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in surface waters is increasing, particularly with regard to potential effects of long-term, low-dose exposures of aquatic organisms. In most cases, the actual studies on PPCPs were risk assessments at screening-level, and accurate estimates were scarce. In this study, exposure and ecotoxicity data of 50 PPCPs were collected based on our previous studies, and a multiple-level environmental risk assessment was performed. The 50 selected PPCPs are likely to be frequently detected in surface waters of China, with concentrations ranging from the ng L-1 to the low-g L-1, and the risk quotients based on median concentrations ranged from 2046 for nonylphenol to 0 for phantolide. A semi-probabilistic approach screened 33 PPCPs that posed potential risks to aquatic organisms, among which 15 chemicals (nonylphenol, sulfamethoxazole, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, 17β-ethynyl estradiol, caffeine, tetracycline, 17β-estradiol, estrone, dibutyl phthalate, ibuprofen, carbamazepine, tonalide, galaxolide, triclosan, and bisphenol A) were categorized as priority compounds according to an optimized risk assessment, and then the refined probabilistic risk assessment indicated 12 of them posed low to high risk to aquatic ecosystem, with the maximum risk products ranged from 1.54% to 17.38%. Based on these results, we propose that the optimized risk assessment was appropriate for screening priority contaminants at national scale, and when a more accurate estimation is required, the refined probability risk assessment is useful. The methodology and process might provide reference for other research of chemical evaluation and management for rivers, lakes, and sea waters.

Distribution and ecological risk assessment of PEDCs in the water, sediment and Carex cinerascens of Poyang Lake wetland, China. Sci Rep 2019; 9:11302. [PMID: 31383923 PMCID: PMC6683139 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-019-47864-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/12/2019] [Accepted: 07/25/2019] [Indexed: 12/02/2022] Open
Abstract
Phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals (PEDCs), such as 4-nonylphenol (NP), 4-t-octylphenol (OP), bisphenol A (BPA), and nonylphenol-di-ethoxylate (NP2EO), can cause feminization and carcinogenesis. This study assessed the distributions of NP, OP, BPA, and NP2EO in the water, sediment, and Carex cinerascens of Poyang Lake wetland. The four PEDCs were ubiquitous. The concentrations of NP and OP in the water and sediment of the wetland were significantly lower than those in other regions of China. Average BPA concentrations in the water, sediment, and Carex cinerascens samples were 40.49 ± 18.42 ng/L, 9.840 ± 3.149 ng/g, and 3.25 ± 1.40 ng/g, respectively; the BPA concentration in the water was similar to that of other rivers in China. Average NP2EO concentrations in the wetland were 3125.9 ± 478.1 ng/L, 650.0 ± 209.9 ng/g, and 275.8 ± 59.0 ng/g in the water, sediment, and Carex cinerascens samples, respectively. The predicted no-effect concentrations in sediment for NP, OP, BPA, and NP2EO were estimated to be 75.41, 45.25, 8.22, and 237.5 ng/g, respectively. The risk quotient (RQ) method was used to characterise the ecological risk from these PEDCs. A high ecological risk (RQ ≥ 1) from BPA was observed for 0%, 57.69%, and 5.00% of water, sediment, and C. cinerascens samples, respectively, while a high risk from NP2EO was observed for 71.43%, 96.15%, and 55.00% of samples. Ecological risk varied spatially. The high ecological risk from NP2EO in Poyang Lake wetland may be a result of non-point pollution from rural areas and sewage from Poyang Lake basin.

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY 2018; 60:17-27. Abstract
Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are well known endocrine disruptors. Widespread environmental contamination from NPEs is an issue of great concern. Despite amphibians are often exposed to such contaminants, very little attention has been dedicated to this vertebrate group. No information is available on the effects of NPEs onto the amphibian skin and only few reports have been conducted on fish. Here, histological and ultrastructural modifications of the skin have been evaluated in the Italian newt Lissotriton italicus. After a short-term exposure to two ecologically relevant concentrations of NP, severe pathological alterations, both dose and time-dependent, have been observed. The main effects were an increased mucous secretion, the dilation of the endomembrane, the wrinkling of the epidermal surface, the appearance of tubercles, the increased cellular turnover, continuous shedding processes. Some of the described skin alterations can easily interfere with physiological functions, such as osmoregulation and body protection, with detrimental consequences for the amphibian populations.
