Influence of Fe(II) on the Se(IV) sorption under oxic/anoxic conditions using bentonite

Source-oriented health risk assessment of groundwater based on hydrochemistry and two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation

Accurately assessing the health risks posed by major contaminants is essential for protecting groundwater. However, the complexity of pollution sources and the uncertainty of parameters pose challenges for quantitative health risk assessment. In this study, a source-oriented groundwater risk evaluation process was improved by screening key pollutants, employing a combined hydrochemical and positive matrix factorization (PMF) approach for source apportionment, and incorporating two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation for risk characterization. The application of this process to groundwater assessment in Central Jiangxi Province identified NO3-, F-, Se and Mn as the key pollutants. The pollution sources were anthropogenic activities, rock dissolution, regional geological processes, and ion exchange. Anthropogenic sources contributed 36.8 % and 28.8 % of the pollution during the wet season and dry season, respectively, and accounted for more than half of the health risks. NO3- from anthropogenic sources was the primary controlling pollutant. Additionally, the risk assessment indicated that children were at the highest health risk during the dry season, with ingestion rate suggested to be controlled below 1.062 L·day-1 to make the health risk within an acceptable range. The improved assessment methodology could provide more accurate results and recommended intakes.

Using machine learning to predict selenium and cadmium contents in rice grains from black shale-distributed farmland area

Cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se) are widely enriched in soil at black shale outcropping areas, with Cd levels exceeding the standard (2.0 mg/kg in 5.5 < pH ≤ 6.5) commonly. The prevention of Cd hazards and the safe development of Se-rich land resources are key issues that need to be urgently addressed. To ensure safe utilization of Se-rich land in the CdSe coexisting areas, 158 rice samples, their corresponding rhizosphere soils, and 8069 topsoil samples were collected and tested in the paddy fields of Ankang City, Shaanxi Province, where black shales are widely exposed. The results showed that 43 % of the topsoil samples were Se-rich soil (Se > 0.4 mg/kg) wherein 79 % and 3 % of Cd concentrations exceeded the screening value and control value, respectively, according to the GB15618-2018 standard. Meanwhile, 63 % of the rice samples were Se rich (Se > 0.04 mg/kg) and the Cd content exceeded the prescribed limit (0.2 mg/kg) in Se-rich rice by 26 %. There was no significant positive correlation between the Se and Cd contents in the rice grains and the Se and Cd contents in the corresponding rhizosphere soil. The factors influencing Se and Cd uptake in rice were SiO2, CaO, P, S, pH, and TFe2O3. Accordingly, an artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple linear regression model (MLR) were used to predict Cd and Se bioaccumulation in rice grains. The stability and accuracy of the ANN model were better than those of the MLR model. Based on survey data and the prediction results of the ANN model, a safe planting zoning of Se-rich rice was proposed, which provided a reference for the scientific planning of land resources.

Utilizing biochar to decorate nanoscale FeS for the highly effective decontamination of Se(IV) from simulated wastewater

Selenium (Se) as an essential nutrient for human beings at trace concentrations, the allowable concentration for the human is only 40 μg/L. Iron sulfide (FeS) nanoparticles have been applied for excessive of selenium (Se) remediation in surface water and groundwater. In this study, FeS nanoparticles were anchored onto biochar (BC) to reduce agglomeration of FeS and prepared into the composite of FeS-BC by pyrolysis to economically and efficiently remove Se(IV) from simulated wastewater based on the excellent performance of FeS and the low cost of BC. Characterizations presented the uniform anchorage of FeS on the BC surface to prevent agglomeration. The results of batch experiments revealed that the removal of Se(IV) by FeS-BC nanomaterials significantly depended on the pH value, with the maximum removal of ∼174.96 mg/g at pH 3.0. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model well reflected the kinetic removal of Se(IV) in pure Se(IV) solution with different concentration, as well as the coexistence of K+, Ca2+, Cl-, and SO42- ions. The presence of K+ ions significantly inhibited the removal of Se(IV) with the increase of K+ ion concentration compared with the effect of the other three ions. SEM-EDS and XPS analyses indicated that the removal process was achieved through adsorption by surface complexation, and reductive precipitation of Se(IV) into Se0 with the electron donor of Fe(II) and S(-II) ions. The FeS-BC nanomaterial exhibited an excellent application prospect in the remediation of Se(IV).

Characteristics of Se in water-soil-plant system and threshold of soil Se in seleniferous areas in Enshi, China

Se-enrichment characteristics in water-soil-plant system and dietary Se status of local residents in seleniferous areas were investigated. Results showed that Se in well water might mainly derived from Se-enriched shales and coals, and Se mobility in seleniferous soils was relatively low with less than 6.7% bioavailable forms in high-Se areas. Soil Se with irrigation, precipitation and fertilization sources contributed more to soil Se than Se-enriched shales and coals in low-Se areas, resulting in slightly higher mobility of Se in low-Se soils. Se concentration in edible parts of main crops ranged from 0.005 mg kg^-1 to 4.17 mg kg^-1, and cereal plants had a higher Se-enrichment ability than tuber plants. The probable dietary Se intake (PDI) in high-Se areas was decreased to 959.3 μg d^-1 in recent years, which might be attributed to tap water as drinking water in recent year rather than well water-dependent and changes in dietary structure, but still far above the permissible value of 400 μg d^-1. Reducing cereal-derived dietary Se intake is an important strategy to better Se nutrition status in high-Se areas. After synthesis considerations on soil Se bioavailability and PDI of Se, the soil total Se of 4 mg kg^-1 and the soil available Se content of 0.32 mg kg^-1 were proposed to be the reference threshold values of soil Se excess in high-Se areas in Enshi, respectively.

Bentonite colloids immobilization and release in quartz column and its influence on selenite migration

Immobilization and release of colloids are important for colloids-facilitated migrations, and in the safety assessment of geological disposal for high-level radioactive waste, the association between the immobilization and release process of the bentonite colloids with selenite migration has not been well revealed. In this work, the migration of bentonite colloids under different conditions is evaluated, and the effects of colloids immobilization and release on selenite migration are studied. In addition, the cases of in-migration (colloids are immobilized in the quartz sand, and then selenite migrates through the quartz sand with immobilized colloids) and co-migration (colloids bearing selenite are immobilized in the quartz sand) are investigated. The results show that in the systems containing 3.0 mM Mg²⁺, the mobility of the colloids is highly hindered and the colloids are immobilized in the quartz sand mainly by straining effect. The immobilization of bentonite colloids affects selenite migration differently according to the immobilization process (in-migration or co-migration). A more significant retardation effect is observed in the co-migration process than in-migration due to the additional inner-sphere complexed selenite in the co-migration. The immobilized colloids can be more easily released by alkaline DI-water (pH 11.0) than acidic one (pH 6.0) as a result of the more negative surface charges of the immobilized bentonite colloids. The average size of the released colloids is larger than the initial colloids at the same pH. Selenite is found to be released ahead of colloids in either in- or co-migration process, and part of selenite is discovered migrating with released colloids in co-migration process. Since colloids immobilization and release would influence radionuclides migration, further research about colloids immobilization and release with broad range of pH and ionic strength in the host rock and its influence on the migration of other radionuclides are needed.

Microbial induced carbonate precipitation contributes to the fates of Cd and Se in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils

Bioremediation based on microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) was conducted in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils with objective to investigate effects of MICP on the fates of Cd and Se in soils. Results showed that soil indigenous microorganisms could induce MICP process to stabilize Cd and mobilize Se without inputting exogenous urease-producing strain. After remediation, soluble Cd (SOL-Cd) and exchangeable Cd (EXC-Cd) concentrations were decreased respectively by 59.8% and 9.4%, the labile Cd measured by the diffusive gradients in thin-films technique (DGT) was decreased by 14.2%. The MICP stabilized Cd mainly by increasing soil pH and co-precipitating Cd during the formation of calcium carbonate. Compared with chemical extraction method, DGT technique performs better in reflecting Cd bioavailability in soils remediated with MICP since this technique could eliminate the interference of Ca²⁺. The increase in pH resulted in Se conversion from nonlabile fraction to soluble and exchangeable fractions, thus improving Se bioavailability. And Se in soil solution could adsorb to or co-precipitate with the insoluble calcium carbonate during MICP, which would partly weaken Se bioavailability. Taken together, MICP had positive effects on the migration of Se. In conclusion, MICP could stabilize Cd and improve Se availability simultaneously in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils.

Characteristics of selenium enrichment and assessment of selenium bioavailability using the diffusive gradients in thin-films technique in seleniferous soils in Enshi, Central China

Agricultural products from seleniferous areas commonly face problems associated with substantial variation in selenium (Se) concentration, which is mainly caused by the heterogeneity of Se bioavailability in soil. Many studies have assessed the bioavailability of Se and its influencing factors using soil samples treated with exogenous Se. Given the distinctly different characteristics of Se-spiked soils and naturally seleniferous soils, exploring Se bioavailability in naturally seleniferous soils is crucial to the stable production of Se-enriched agricultural products. In this study, we used the classical sequential extraction method to determine the Se fractionation and then applied the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique to assess the Se bioavailability in naturally seleniferous soils. The results indicated that soluble and exchangeable Se fractions with high bioavailability accounted for only 0.7% and 5.1% of total Se, respectively. Both soluble and exchangeable Se concentrations were significantly positively correlated with soil pH (r = 0.329 and 0.262, respectively; P < 0.01). Se mainly exists in Fe-Mn oxide-bound, organic matter-bound, and residual Se fractions with low mobility (94.2% of total Se), among which organic matter-bound Se was the predominant fraction (49.5% of total Se). A significant positive correlation was found between total Se and soil organic matter (r = 0.539; P < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis revealed that the DGT-determined Se was mostly derived from soluble and exchangeable Se. The high correlation between the DGT-determined Se fraction and Se uptake by rice (r = 0.91; P < 0.01) confirmed that DGT can accurately assess Se bioavailability in naturally seleniferous soils in Enshi and other similar environmental settings.

Macroscopic and spectroscopic characterization of U(VI) sorption on biotite

Knowledge of the geochemical behavior of uranium is critical for the safe disposal of radioactive wastes. Biotite, a Fe(II)-rich phyllosilicate, is a common rock-forming mineral and a major component of granite or granodiorite. This work comprehensively studied the sorption of U(VI) on biotite surface with batch experiments and analyzed the uranium speciation with various spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and time-resolved fluorescence spectra (TRFS). Our results indicated that uranyl ions could penetrate into the interlayer of biotite, this ion-exchange process was pH-dependent and only favorable under acidic condition. Instead of precipitation or reduction to uraninite, the TRFS results strongly suggests U(VI) forms surface complexes under the neutral and alkaline condition, though the number and structure of surface species could not be identified accurately. Besides, the oxidation of biotite with peroxide hydrogen showed that structural Fe(II) would have a very low redox reactivity. With leaching experiments, zeta potential analysis and thermodynamics calculation, we discussed the possible reasons for inhibition of U(VI) reduction at the biotite-water interface. Our results may provide insight on interaction mechanism of uranium at mineral-water interface and help us understand the migration behavior of uranium in natural environments.

Stabilization and transformation of selenium during the Fe(II)-induced transformation of Se(IV)-adsorbed ferrihydrite under anaerobic conditions

Selenium (Se) is an essential nutrient for human beings at trace concentrations, but also a hazardous contaminant at high concentrations. As an important geological adsorbent, the transformation of 2-line ferrihydrite (Fh) strongly influences the geochemical behavior of selenium. However, little is known about the effect of the recrystallization of Fh on the fate of adsorbed Se(IV) in the reducing environments. We investigated the redistribution and transformation of Se(IV) during the recrystallization of Se(IV)-adsorbed Fh accelerated by Fe(II) under anaerobic conditions. Synchrotron based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was utilized to characterize oxidation state of Se. Results revealed that the adsorbed Se(IV) inhibited the Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization of ferrihydrite to goethite. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that pH and the presence of Se(IV) had significant impacts on the morphology of the produced goethite. Approximately 30-75% adsorbed Se(IV) transformed to phosphate-unextractable form, indicating that the adsorbed Se transformed to more stable phase during the recrystallization of Fh. The XANES results indicated that a small fraction of Se(IV) was reduced to elemental Se. Our study demonstrated that the stability of adsorbed Se(IV) on ferrihydrite could be enhanced during Fe(II)-catalytic transformation of Fh under anoxic environments.

Impact of low-molecular weight organic acids on selenite immobilization by goethite: Understanding a competitive-synergistic coupling effect and speciation transformation

The interactions between low-molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) and selenium (Se) on mineral/water interfaces affect the release, immobilization and bioavailability of Se in nature. Herein, the effects of three environmentally relevant LMWOAs (i.e., oxalic (Oxa), succinic (Suc) and citric (Cit) acids) on Se(IV) adsorption to goethite under oxic conditions were investigated using batch experiments, speciation fractionation, and ATR-FTIR and XPS analyses. The LMWOAs exhibited a competitive-synergistic coupling effect on Se(IV) adsorption to goethite, which inhibited the adsorption rate of Se(IV) by 14.1, 13.3 and 8.0 times. However, immobilization of Se(IV) was simultaneously enhanced by 39.1%, 34.6% and 14.1% in the following order Oxa > Suc > Cit. The results obtained by fractionation of the adsorbed Se(IV) revealed that the enhancement was due to surface binding as well as speciation transformation from ligand-exchangeable Se(IV) into residual fractions, which increased by approximately 18% in the presence of the LMWOAs. The dissolution of goethite significantly improved due to the LMWOAs and decreased to different degrees as the concentration of Se(IV) increased. The monodentate mononuclear complexes (58.2%) and Lewis base sites bonded Se (41.8%) were the predominant surface species of Se(IV) in goethite-Se(IV) system. The ATR-FTIR and high-resolution XPS analyses demonstrated that the formation of ≡FeO(SeO)O-CO surface complexes (22.8-27.0%) occurred in the presence of LMWOAs, which could be closely correlated with the interface-mediated reduction of Se(IV). In addition, the predominant mechanism for the formation of residual Se is LMWOA specific, in which ferric selenite-like precipitation was dominant for Suc (10.6%) and Cit (11.6%) and reduction was dominant for Oxa (17.5%). Overall, LMWOAs play an important role in Se(IV) immobilization and speciation transformation and may facilitate understanding the Se bioavailability in rhizosphere soils under oxic conditions.

Sorption of selenite on Tamusu clay in simulated groundwater with high salinity under aerobic/anaerobic conditions

The sorption behavior of selenite onto the Tamusu clay from a preselected high-level radioactive waste disposal site in Inner Mongolia, China, was first investigated in simulated groundwater with high salinity by batch sorption experiments under aerobic/anaerobic conditions. The results demonstrated that the K_d values rapidly decreased and then remained steady in the pH range of 2.0-8.0. However, selenite sorption was promoted when pH exceeded 8.0, which might be attributed to the coprecipitation between Ca²⁺ and SeO₃^2-. Besides, the change trend of the K_d values as functions of various parameters was not affected by oxygen. The sorption kinetics and isotherms could be well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich model for both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and the calculated thermodynamic parameters (△G and △H) suggested that the selenite sorption process was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Additionally, the XPS results revealed that Se(IV) could be reduced to Se (0) only in anaerobic conditions and that the different amounts of Fe on the clay surface led to the discrepancy of the Se(IV) K_d values under aerobic and anaerobic conditions even in high-salt simulated groundwater. Overall, our findings in this study are significant in regards to the retardation of selenite on the host rock under high salinity conditions.

Sorption of U(VI) onto natural soils and different mineral compositions: The batch method and spectroscopy analysis

This research studied the sorption behavior of uranium(VI) onto two different kinds of soils: surface soil and undersurface soil that taken from the depth of 30 m undersurface. The soil samples were collected from a low and medium-level radioactive waste disposal site in the southwest of China. The effects of pH, solid-liquid ratio and contact time on the adsorption behavior were studied by batch adsorption method. The experiment results show that the mineral composition of soil and the speciation of U in natural groundwater are two main influencing factors. Muscovite and clinochlore, two of the main minerals of soil samples, dominate the sorption behavior of uranium onto natural soils at weak acidic and near neutral pH range. Under neutral and weak alkaline conditions, the thermodynamic calculation results show that Ca²⁺ and CO₃^2- have significant influence on the species of uranium in aqueous solution. The U sorption reduced sharply due to the formation of the CaUO₂(CO₃)₃^2- (aq) complex. This work provides a better insight of the sorption behavior of uranium onto natural soils, and gives an in-depth understanding about the influence of aqueous and surface speciation.
