Electrochemical and microbial community responses of electrochemically active biofilms to copper ions in bioelectrochemical systems

Synergistic reduction of pollution and carbon mitigation in constructed wetlands-microbial fuel cell using sludge-derived biochar

Integrating microbial fuel cells (MFC) into constructed wetland systems (CW) has been an efficient wastewater treatment to improve the pollutants removal and regenerate power energy. This study fabricated a sludge biochar material (SBM) to sequestrate the carbon of residual sludge. Thereafter used SBM and modified SBM as the substrate materials to construct three groups of CW-MFC for decreasing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. The water quality improvement in removal efficiency achieved (2.59 %, 3.10 %, 5.21 % for COD; 3.31 %, 3.60 %, 6.71 % for TN; 1.80 %, 7.38 %, 4.93 % for TP) by the application of MFC, SBM, and modified SBM in wastewater treatment, respectively. Additionally, the reduction in global warming potential (GWP) realized 17.2 %, 42.2 %, and 64.4 % resulting from these applications. The carbon flow and fate diagrams showed MFC shifted the gas phase‑carbon flow from CH4 to CO2, and SBM promoted this shift trends. Microbial diversity indicated enrichment of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB), denitrifying bacteria, and phosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) by SBM. Metabolic pathways analysis showed that introduction of MFC and SBM exhibited significant increases of key functional genes in metabolic pathway of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). This study highlights the benefit of CW-MFC in and provides a new strategy for removing pollutants and abating GHG emissions in wastewater treatment.

Elucidating the impacts of cobalt (II) ions on extracellular electron transfer and pollutant degradation by anodic biofilms in bioelectrochemical systems during industrial wastewater treatment

Electrogenic biofilms in bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are critical in wastewater treatment. Industrial effluents often contain cobalt (Co2+); however, its impact on biofilms is unknown. This study investigated how increasing Co2+ concentrations (0-30 mg/L) affect BES biofilm community dynamics, extracellular polymeric substances, microbial metabolism, electron transfer gene expression, and electrochemical performance. The research revealed that as Co2+ concentrations increased, power generation progressively declined, from 345.43 ± 4.07 mW/m2 at 0 mg/L to 160.51 ± 0.86 mW/m2 at 30 mg/L Co2+. However, 5 mg/L Co2+ had less effect. The Co2+ removal efficiency in the reactors fed with 5 and 10 mg/L concentrations exceeded 99% and 94%, respectively. However, at 20 and 30 mg/L, the removal efficiency decreased substantially, likely because of reduced biofilm viability. FTIR indicated the participation of biofilm functional groups in Co2+ uptake. XPS revealed Co2+ presence in biofilms as CoO and Co(OH)2, indicating precipitation also aided removal. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests revealed that 5 mg/L Co2+ had little impact on the electrocatalytic activity, while higher concentrations impaired it. Furthermore, at a concentration of 5 mg/L Co2+, there was an increase in the proportion of the genus Anaeromusa-Anaeroarcus, while the genus Geobacter declined at all tested Co2+ concentrations. Additionally, higher concentrations of Co2+ suppressed the expression of extracellular electron transfer genes but increased the expression of Co2+-resistance genes. Overall, this study establishes how Co2+ impacts electrogenic biofilm composition, function, and treatment efficacy, laying the groundwork for the optimized application of BES in remediating Co2+-contaminated wastewater.

Mechanistic insights into the response of electroactive biofilms to Cd2+ shock: bacterial viability and electron transfer behavior at the cellular and community levels

Electroactive biofilms (EABs) play a crucial role in environmental bioremediation due to their excellent extracellular electron transfer (EET) capabilities. However, Cd2+ can have toxic effects on the electrochemical performance of EABs, and the comprehensive inhibition mechanism of EABs in response to Cd2+ shock remains elusive. This study indicated that Cd2+ shock significantly reduced biomass and increased oxidative stress in EABs at the cellular level. The bacterial viability of EABs in phase III under 0.5 mM Cd2+ shock (EABCd2+-III0.5) decreased by 16.31% compared to EABCK-III. Moreover, intracellular NADH, c-Cyts, and the abundance of electroactive species were essential indicators to evaluate EET behavior of EABs. In EABCd2+-III0.5, these indicators decreased by 26.32%, 33.40%, and 20.65%, respectively. Structural equation modeling analysis established quantitative correlations between core components and electrochemical activity at cellular and community levels. The correlation analysis revealed that the growth and electron transfer functions of EABs were predictive indicators for their electrochemical performance, with standardized path coefficients of 0.407 and 0.358, respectively. These findings enhance our understanding of EABs' response to Cd2+ shock and provide insights for improving their performance in heavy metal wastewater.

Microbial Biofilms for Environmental Bioremediation of Heavy Metals: a Review

Heavy metal pollution caused due to various industrial and mining activities poses a serious threat to all forms of life in the environment because of the persistence and toxicity of metal ions. Microbial-mediated bioremediation including microbial biofilms has received significant attention as a sustainable tool for heavy metal removal as it is considered safe, effective, and feasible. The biofilm matrix is dynamic, having microbial cells as major components with constantly changing and evolving microenvironments. This review summarizes the bioremediation potential of bacterial biofilms for different metal ions. The composition and mechanism of biofilm formation along with interspecies communication among biofilm-forming bacteria have been discussed. The interaction of biofilm-associated microbes with heavy metals takes place through a variety of mechanisms. These include biosorption and bioaccumulation in which the microbes interact with the metal ions leading to their conversion from a highly toxic form to a less toxic form. Such interactions are facilitated via the negative charge of the extracellular polymeric substances on the surface of the biofilm with the positive charge of the metal ions and the high cell densities and high concentrations of cell-cell signaling molecules within the biofilm matrix. Furthermore, the impact of the anodic and cathodic redox potentials in a bioelectrochemical system (BES) for the reduction, removal, and recovery of numerous heavy metal species provides an interesting insight into the bacterial biofilm-mediated bioelectroremediation process. The review concludes that biofilm-linked bioremediation is a viable option for the mitigation of heavy metal pollution in water and ecosystem recovery.

Electroactive microorganism-assisted remediation of groundwater contamination: Advances and challenges

Groundwater contamination has become increasingly prominent, therefore, the development of efficient remediation technology is crucial for improving groundwater quality. Bioremediation is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, while coexisting pollutant stress can affect microbial processes, and the heterogeneous character of groundwater medium can induce bioavailability limitations and electron donor/acceptor imbalances. Electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) are advantageous in contaminated groundwater because of their unique bidirectional electron transfer mechanism, which allows them to use solid electrodes as electron donors/acceptors. However, the relatively low-conductivity groundwater environment is unfavorable for electron transfer, which becomes a bottleneck problem that limits the remediation efficiency of EAMs. Therefore, this study reviews the recent advances and challenges of EAMs applied in the groundwater environment with complex coexisting ions, heterogeneity, and low conductivity and proposes corresponding future directions.

Effect of different carbon sources on sulfate reduction and microbial community structure in bioelectrochemical systems

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) have rapidly developed into a promising technology to treat sulfate-rich wastewater that lacks electron donors. Hence, a better understanding of the effect on the microbial community structure caused by different sources in bioelectrochemical systems is required. This study sought to investigate the effect of different carbon sources (NaHCO₃, ethanol, and acetate were employed as sole carbon source respectively) on the performance of sulfate-reducing biocathodes. The sulfate reduction efficiency enhanced by the bioelectrochemical systems was 8.09 - 11.57% higher than that of open-circuit reference experiments. Furthermore, the optimum carbon source was ethanol with a maximum sulfate reduction rate of 170 mg L^-1 d^-1 in the bioelectrochemical systems. The different carbon sources induced significant differences in sulfate reduction efficiency as demonstrated by the application of a micro-electrical field. Microbial community structure and network analysis revealed that all three kinds of carbon source systems enriched large proportions of sulfate-reducing bacteria and electroactive bacteria but were significantly distinct in composition. The dominant sulfate-reducing bacteria that use NaHCO₃ and acetate as carbon sources were Desulfobacter and Desulfobulbus, whereas those that use ethanol as carbon source were Desulfomicrobium and Desulfovibrio. Our results suggest that ethanol is a more suitable carbon source for sulfate reduction in bioelectrochemical systems.

Detoxification mechanisms of electroactive microorganisms under toxicity stress: A review

Remediation of environmental toxic pollutants has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Microbial bioremediation has been an important technology for removing toxic pollutants. However, microbial activity is also susceptible to toxicity stress in the process of intracellular detoxification, which significantly reduces microbial activity. Electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) can detoxify toxic pollutants extracellularly to a certain extent, which is related to their unique extracellular electron transfer (EET) function. In this review, the extracellular and intracellular aspects of the EAMs’ detoxification mechanisms are explored separately. Additionally, various strategies for enhancing the effect of extracellular detoxification are discussed. Finally, future research directions are proposed based on the bottlenecks encountered in the current studies. This review can contribute to the development of toxic pollutants remediation technologies based on EAMs, and provide theoretical and technical support for future practical engineering applications.

Effect of electric current intensity on performance of polycaprolactone/FeS2-based mixotrophic biofilm-electrode reactor

In this study, a bioelectrochemical system consisting of pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (PAD) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD) was established to polish nitrate wastewater. The loading of electric current (EC) could stimulate the dissolution of pyrite. Appropriate EC (I ≤ 30 mA) was conducive to nitrate removal, too high EC (I = 40 mA) would inhibit nitrate removal and lead to an obvious accumulation of NO₂^--N and NH₄⁺-N. Microbial analysis revealed that the increase of EC could inhibit the diversity of heterotrophic microbes, but appropriate EC (I = 10 mA) could increase the diversity of autotrophic microbes. The EC loading was conducive to the enrichment of iron autotrophic denitrifiers (Ferritrophicum), pyrite-oxidizing bacteria (Thiobacillus, Sulfurimonas), and sulfur autotrophic denitrifiers (Dechloromonas, Thiobacillus, and Arenimonas). The EC loading enlarged the contribution of PAD, making PAD a dominant pathway in denitrification.

Effect of nickel (II) on the performance of anodic electroactive biofilms in bioelectrochemical systems

The impact of nickel (Ni²⁺) on the performance of anodic electroactive biofilms (EABs) in the bioelectrochemical system (BES) was investigated in this study. Although it has been reported that Ni²⁺ influences microorganisms in a number of ways, it is unknown how its presence in the anode of a BES affects extracellular electron transfer (EET) of EABs, microbial viability, and the bacterial community. Results revealed that the addition of Ni²⁺ decreased power output from 673.24 ± 12.40 mW/m² at 0 mg/L to 179.26 ± 9.05 mW/m² at 80 mg/L. The metal and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiencies of the microbial fuel cells (MFCs) declined as Ni²⁺ concentration increased, which could be attributed to decreased microbial viability as revealed by SEM and CLSM. FTIR analysis revealed the involvement of various microbial biofilm functional groups, including hydroxyl, amides, methyl, amine, and carboxyl, in the uptake of Ni²⁺. The presence of Ni²⁺ on the anodic biofilms was confirmed by SEM-EDS and XPS analyses. CV demonstrated that the electron transfer performance of the anodic biofilms was negatively correlated with the various Ni²⁺ concentrations. EIS showed that the internal resistance of the MFCs increased with increasing Ni²⁺ concentration, resulting in a decrease in power output. High-throughput sequencing results revealed a decrease in Geobacter and an increase in Desulfovibrio in response to Ni²⁺ concentrations of 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg/L. Furthermore, the various Ni²⁺ concentrations decreased the expression of EET-related genes. The Ni²⁺-fed MFCs had a higher abundance of the nikR gene than the control group, which was important for Ni²⁺ resistance. This work advances our understanding of Ni²⁺ inhibition on EABs, as well as the concurrent removal of organic matter and Ni²⁺ from wastewater.

Bioelectrochemical systems-based metal recovery: Resource, conservation and recycling of metallic industrial effluents

Metals represent a large proportion of industrial effluents, which due to their high hazardous nature and toxicity are responsible to create environmental pollution that can pose significant threat to the global flora and fauna. Strict ecological rules compromise sustainable recovery of metals from industrial effluents by replacing unsustainable and energy-consuming physical and chemical techniques. Innovative technologies based on the bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are a rapidly developing research field with proven encouraging outcomes for many industrial commodities, considering the worthy options for recovering metals from industrial effluents. BES technology platform has redox capabilities with small energy-intensive processes. The positive stigma of BES in metals recovery is addressed in this review by demonstrating the significance of BES over the current physical and chemical techniques. The mechanisms of action of BES towards metal recovery have been postulated with the schematic representation. Operational limitations in BES-based metal recovery such as biocathode and metal toxicity are deeply discussed based on the available literature results. Eventually, a progressive inspection towards a BES-based metal recovery platform with possibilities of integration with other modern technologies is foreseen to meet the real-time challenges of viable industrial commercialization.

Substrate degradation, biodiesel production, and microbial community of two electro-fermentation systems on treating oleaginous microalgae Nannochloropsis sp

Electro-fermentation system (EFS) emerges its effectiveness on treating microalgae for biodiesel production, but much is unknown about biodegradation behaviors, biodiesel characteristics, and microbial community. Compared with conventional fermentation system (CFS), microbial electrolysis cell-based EFS (MEC-EFS) and microbial fuel cell-based EFS (MFC-EFS) were investigated for the performance while treating microalgae Nannochloropsis sp. Results indicated that MEC-EFS presented much higher first-order decomposition rate coefficients of carbohydrates and proteins (1.212/d and 0.951/d) than those of CFS (0.615/d and 0.794/d) and MFC-EFS (0.518/d and 0.415/d). Compared with MFC-EFS, MEC-EFS showed better electrochemical performance (2.17 A/m³vs. 0.95 A/m³). Moreover, MEC-EFS reached the highest extracted lipid to biomass ratio (43.3%), followed by MFC-EFS (32.3%) and CFS (27.7%). By strengthened microbial biohydrogenation, MEC-EFS and MFC-EFS had higher saturated fatty acids ratio (78.8% and 70.6%) than that of CFS (56.1%). For MEC-EFS, enriched Ruminococcus and Geobacter in anodic biofilm might contribute to favorable biohydrogenation and electrochemical performance.

Effect of copper ions on glucose fermentation pathways in bioelectrochemical system

Toxic metal ions were previously found to be effective removed by anodic biofilms under the coexistence of organics in bioelectrochemical system (BES). However, the effect of toxic metal ions on the organics fermentation pathways remains unclear. To investigate the pathway systematically, the glucose fermentation pathways were discussed under different Cu²⁺ concentrations. After introducing Cu²⁺, more acetate and less propionate were observed, implying that the metabolic reaction of glucose fermentation altered from mixed acid type to acetogenesis type. This pattern produced more "food" (acetate or hydrogen) for methanogens, thus, the methane content increased by 19.67%, 39.51%, and 27.71% in the presence of 0.1, 1, and 7 mg L^-1 Cu²⁺ compared to the blank, respectively. Increased Cu²⁺ concentrations resulted in the decrease of current production, which was associated with the decrease of electricigen (Geobacter). Consistent with the change of fermentation type, the fermenters (Klebsiella and norank_f__norank_o__Bacteroidales) that related to the production of acetate increased, while the dominant methanogens (Methaospirillum) didn't decrease until the Cu²⁺ concentration reached 7 mg L^-1.

Current intensities altered the performance and microbial community structure of a bio-electrochemical system

A novel integrated bio-electrochemical system with sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) and electrocoagulation (BESAD-EC) system was established to remove nitrate (NO₃^--N) and phosphorus from contaminated groundwater. The impacts of a current intensity gradient on the system's performance and microbial community were investigated. The results showed that NO₃^--N and total phosphorus (TP) could be effectively removed with maximum NO₃^--N reduction and TP removal efficiencies of 94.2% and 75.8% at current intensities of 200 and 400 mA, respectively. Lower current intensities could improve the removal efficiencies of NO₃^--N (≤200 mA) and phosphorus (≤400 mA), while higher current intensity (600 mA) caused the inhibition of nutrients removal in the system. MiSeq sequencing analysis revealed that low electrical stimulation improved the diversity and richness of microbial community, while high electrical stimulation reduced their diversity and richness. The relative abundance of some genus involved in denitrification and phosphorus removal processes such as Rhizobium, Hydrogenophaga, Denitratisoma and Gemmobacter, significantly (P < 0.05) reduced under high current conditions. This could be one of the main reasons for the deterioration of denitrification and phosphorus removal performance. The results of this study could be helpful to enhance the nutrient removal performance of bio-electrochemical systems in groundwater treatment processes.

Simultaneous copper removal and electricity production and microbial community in microbial fuel cells with different cathode catalysts

With graphene oxide (GO), platinum carbon (Pt/C), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as cathode catalysts, three types of single-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were constructed for simultaneous Cu²⁺ removal and electricity production. Results indicated rGO-MFC and Pt/C-MFC had much better Cu²⁺-removing and electricity-generating performance than that of GO-MFC, and rGO-MFC presented preferable electrochemical characteristics compared with Pt/C-MFC. Microbial community analysis indicated Geobacter dominated anodic biofilms and was mainly responsible for organics degradation and electricity generation. The dual bio-selective effects by cathode catalyst and toxic Cu²⁺ resulted in different cathodic microbial communities. At high Cu²⁺ contents, Nitratireductor, Ochrobactrum, and Serratia as efficient Cu²⁺-removing genera played key roles in Pt/C-MFC, and Azoarcus predominant in cathodic biofilms of rGO-MFC might be important contributor for the favorable performance in this case.

Enhanced removal of veterinary antibiotic from wastewater by photoelectroactive biofilm of purple anoxygenic phototroph through photosynthetic electron uptake

Purple anoxygenic phototrophs have been recently attracted substantial attention for their growing potential in wastewater treatment and their diverse metabolic patterns can be regulated for process control and optimization. In this study, the photoheterotrophic metabolism of Rhodopseudomonas palustris (R. palustris) was modified by photosynthetic electron uptake using a poised electrode which was explored to enhance removal of veterinary antibiotic from aqueous medium. The results showed that R. palustris grown as biofilm on electrode surface had excellent photoelectroactive activity and the photosynthetic electron uptake from the photoelectroactive biofilm significantly enhanced antibiotic florfenicol (FLO) degradation. The specific degradation rate of FLO at the set electrode potential of 0 V was 2.59-fold higher than that without applied potential. Enhanced co-metabolic reductive dehalogenation by use of the photosynthetic electrons extracted from co-substrate was mainly responsible for FLO degradation which eliminated the antibacterial activity of FLO. The electrode potential controlled the processes of photosynthetic electron uptake and its resultant FLO degradation. The fastest degradation of FLO was achieved at 0 V because the electrode poised at this potential stroke a proper balance between the enhancing photosynthetic electron uptake by serving as electron acceptor and minimizing competition with FLO for the photosynthetic electron from co-substrate. The activity of photoelectroactive biofilm was not negatively affected by FLO at environmental relevant concentration, suggesting its great potential for removal of antibiotic contaminants in wastewater. R. palustris could serve as a reservoir for floR resistance gene but its abundance can be diminished by choosing appropriate electrode potential.

Enhanced quorum sensing of anode biofilm for better sensing linearity and recovery capability of microbial fuel cell toxicity sensor

MFC toxicity sensor has major hindrances that limit its practical application, such as the poor concentration-response relationship and inferior recovery capability after high toxicity shock. Till now, the direct influence of intrinsic properties on the performance of MFC toxicity sensor has not been well understood. Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-to-cell communication strategy that indirectly affects the intrinsic properties of electroactive biofilms. In this work, commercially available QS autoinducers (AHLs) were applied to MFC toxicity sensor to manipulate anode biofilm for better sensing performance. The results showed that the addition of AHLs (C6-HSL, 3-OXO-C12-HSL) led to higher sensing linearity to a wider range of Pb²⁺. The voltage of MFC sensors with AHLs addition fully recovered even after 10 mg/L Cu²⁺ shock, indicating an enhanced recovery capability of MFC toxicity sensor. It was found that higher live/dead cells ratio and increased exoelectrogen Geobacter abundance were responsible for the superior sensing linearity and recovery capability of MFC toxicity sensor. Our work presented a novel and effective way to advance the process of MFC toxicity sensor application from the perspective of EABs.

Effect of the coexposure of sulfadiazine, ciprofloxacin and zinc on the fate of antibiotic resistance genes, bacterial communities and functions in three-dimensional biofilm-electrode reactors

Three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactors (3D-BERs) with high treatment efficiency were constructed to treat wastewater containing sulfadiazine (SDZ) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) coexposure with Zinc (Zn). The results showed that coexposure to target antibiotics and Zn increased the absolute and relative abundances of target antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Additionally, the target ARG abundances were higher on cathode of 3D-BER compared with ordinary anaerobic reactor while the abundances of total ARGs were decreased in the effluent. Meanwhile, redundancy analysis results revealed that the composition of bacteria carrying ARGs was greatly influenced in the cathode by the accumulation of Zn and antibiotic, which dominated the changes of ARG abundances. Additionally, ARGs with their host bacteria revealed by network analysis were partially deposited on electrode substrates when being removed from wastewater. Thus, 3D-BER exhibits capability of simultaneously eliminating antibiotic and Zn, and greatly reduces the risks of ARGs spread.

Low-temperature anaerobic digestion enhanced by bioelectrochemical systems equipped with graphene/PPy- and MnO2 nanoparticles/PPy-modified electrodes

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) with graphene (Gr)/polypyrrole (PPy)- and MnO₂ nanoparticles (NPs)/PPy-modified electrodes were developed to enhance low-temperature anaerobic digestion (LTAD) of low-strength wastewater. At 20 °C, the chemical oxygen demand removal efficiencies and CH₄ yield of the BESs with Gr/PPy (R2) and MnO₂ NPs/PPy (R3)-modified electrodes were 12.7% and 25.6%, and 43.9% and 66.3%, respectively, higher than those of the control (R1, without modification). Although the performance of all reactors decreased as temperature dropping to 12 °C, the CH₄ yield rates of R2 and R3 were still 22.8% and 39.0% higher than that of R1. Further analysis indicated that the modified electrodes might stimulate the metabolic activity of the anaerobic digester sludge. Scanning electron microscopy observation showed that the modified electrodes had higher specific surface area, favoring the attachment and formation of dense biofilms on the surface of electrodes. 16S rRNA gene-sequencing results demonstrated that H₂-consuming methanogens dominated in the BESs and the influence of Gr/PPy and MnO₂ NPs/PPy differed on the microbial community structure of biofilms. These findings justify the wider use of Gr and MnO₂ NPs in electrode modification to assist LTAD using BESs.

A loop of catholyte effluent feeding to bioanodes for complete recovery of Sn, Fe, and Cu with simultaneous treatment of the co-present organics in microbial fuel cells

A loop of catholyte effluent feeding to the bioanodes of air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) achieved complete recovery of mixed Sn(II), Fe(II) and Cu(II), with simultaneous treatment of the co-present organics in synthetic wastewater of printed circuit boards (PrCBs). This in-situ utilization of caustic in the cathodes and the neutralization of acid in the anodes achieved superior metal recovery performance at an optimal hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h. Cathode chambers primarily removed Sn of 91 ± 4% (bottom: 74 ± 3%; electrode: 17 ± 1%), Fe of 89 ± 8% (bottom: 64 ± 4%; electrode: 25 ± 2%), and Cu of 92 ± 7% (electrode: 63 ± 5%; bottom: 29 ± 1%), compared to Sn of 9 ± 3% (electrode: 7 ± 1%; bottom: 2 ± 1%), Fe of 9 ± 3% (electrode: 8 ± 3%; bottom: 1 ± 0%), and Cu of 7 ± 3% (electrode: 4 ± 1%; bottom: 3 ± 1%) in the bioanodes. Bacterial communities on the anodes were well evolutionarily developed after the feeding of catholyte effluent, with the increase in abundance of Rhodopseudomonas and Geobacter, and the shift from Thiobacillus and Acinetobacter to Pseudomonas, Comamonas, Aeromonas and Azospira. This loop of cathodic effluent feeding to the bioanodes of MFCs may represent a unique method for complete metal recovery with simultaneous extraction of renewable electrical energy from the co-present organics. This study also offers new insights into the development of compact microbial electro-metallurgical processes for simultaneous recovery of value-added products from PrCBs processing wastewaters and accomplishing the national wastewater discharge standard for both metals and organics.

Inhibitory effect of cadmium(II) ion on anodic electrochemically active biofilms performance in bioelectrochemical systems

Cadmium(II) ion can affect the anode performance of bioelectrochemical systems (BES); however, how the presence of Cd²⁺ affect the extracellular electron transfer of anodic electrochemically active biofilms (EABs), the microbial viability and species composition of microorganism on the anode remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the inhibitory effect of Cd²⁺ at different concentrations on the electrochemical performance and the biofilm community in mixed-culture enriched BES. The electrochemical performance of the BES was not inhibited at 2 mg L^-1 Cd²⁺, while higher concentrations of 5-20 mg L^-1 resulted in the decrease in the maximum power density, with 0.34 ± 0.01 W m^-2 at 5 mg L^-1, 0.28 ± 0.01 W m^-2 at 10 mg L^-1, and 0.17 ± 0 W m^-2 at 20 mg L^-1, respectively. When adding 30 mg/L Cd²⁺, there was almost no power output. The decline of the power output was possibly ascribed to the suppressed viability and the change of species richness as evident from confocal laser scanning microscopy and microbial community analysis. Cyclic voltammogram and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that high concentration of Cd²⁺ exceeding 5 mg L^-1 can inhibit the secretion of outer membrane cytochromes, thus reducing the electron transfer between the EABs and the anode surface. Analysis of bacterial structures showed a decrease in Geobacter accompanied by an increase in Stenotrophomonas and Azospira in response to Cd²⁺ at 10 and 20 mg L^-1. This study added to the in-depth analysis of the inhibition of Cd²⁺ on EABs, and provided new insights into the removing Cd²⁺ and organics simultaneously in BES.
