The biogeochemical characteristics of phosphorus in coastal sediments under high salinity and dredging conditions

Microbial and environmental medium-driven responses to phosphorus fraction changes in the sediments of different lake types during the freezing period

The comparative study of the transformation among sediment phosphorus (P) fractions in different lake types is a global issue in lake ecosystems. However, interactions between sediment P fractions, environmental factors, and microorganisms vary with the nutrient status of lakes. In this study, we combine sequential extraction and metagenomics sequencing to assess the characteristics of P fractions and transformation in sediments from different lake types in the Inner Mongolian section of the Yellow River Basin. We then further explore the response of relevant microbial and environmental drivers to P fraction transformation and bioavailability in sediments. The sediments of all three lakes exhibited strong exogenous pollution input characteristics, and higher nutritional conditions led to enhanced sediment P fraction transformation ability. The transformation capacity of the sediment P fractions also differed among the different lake types at the same latitudes, which is affected by many factors such as lake environmental factors and microorganisms. Different drivers reflected the mutual control of weakly adsorbed phosphorus (WA-P), potential active phosphorus (PA-P), Fe/Al-bound phosphorus (NaOH-P), and Ca-bound phosphorus (HCl-P) with the bio-directly available phosphorus (Bio-P). The transformation of NaOH-P in reducing environments can improve P bioavailability, while HCl-P is not easily bioavailable in weakly alkaline environments. There were significant differences in the bacterial community diversity and composition between the different lake types at the same latitude (p < 0.05), and the role of P fractions was stronger in the sediments of lakes with rich biodiversity than in poor biodiversity. Lake eutrophication recovery was somewhat hindered by the microbial interactions of P cycling and P fractions within the sediment. This study provides data and theoretical support for exploring the commonalities and differences among different lake types in the Inner Mongolian section of the Yellow River Basin. Besides, it is representative and typical for promoting the optimization of ecological security patterns in ecologically fragile watersheds.

New insights into estimation of bioavailable inorganic phosphorus in natural coastal seawater

Considering the impact of the high salinity and high turbidity of coastal seawater on phosphorus forms, a new method was proposed to determine bioavailable inorganic phosphorus (BIP). The phosphorus most relevant to eutrophication is BIP, and traditional analysis methods may underestimate the degree of eutrophication. In this study, a microelectrode of multigold (AuμE) was fabricated for direct voltammetric determination of BIP without filtration, and BIP environmental characteristics including distribution and correlation relationships with environmental factors in typical coastal seawater of Northern China were analyzed. The proposed AuμE showed a low detection limit of 0.03 μM. The surface and bottom BIP concentrations ranged from 1.00 to 2.13 and from 0.88 to 2.05 μM, respectively. BIP dominated the total P (TP) accounting for 48.5-67.5 % in the surface layer samples, and 32.6-92.7 % in the bottom layer samples, respectively. The concentrations of BIP were obviously higher than those of DIP, indicating that DIP may underestimate the probability of eutrophication occurring. And BIP was positively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO) (P < 0.05). BIP may be a promising indicator of eutrophication potential in coastal areas with high salinity and high turbidity. The proposed reliable voltammetry method provides a new indicator for environmental assessment and represents a significant step in the comprehensive analysis of P species.

Feasibility of soil and sludge standards for freshwater sediment pollutant determination and quality judgment

The environmental standards of soil and sludge have been typically referenced for freshwater sediment determination and quality assessment, especially in some areas without sediment standards. The feasibility of determination method and quality standard of soils and sludge for freshwater sediment was investigated in this study. Fractions of heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, and reduced inorganic sulfur (RIS) in different type of samples were determined, including freshwater sediments, dryland and paddy soils, and sludge with air-drying (AD) and freeze-drying (FD) treatment, respectively. Results showed fraction distributions of heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, and RIS in sediments markedly differed from those of soils and sludge. Fraction redistributions of heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, and RIS in sediments were observed with AD compared to those treated by FD. The proportions of heavy metals, nitrogen, and phosphorus associated with organic matter (or sulfide) in FD sediments decreased by 4.8-74.2%, 9.5-37.5%, and 16.1-76.3%, respectively, compared to those in AD sediments, while those associated with Fe/Mn oxides increased by 6.3-39.1%, 50.9-226.9%, and 6.1-31.0%, respectively. The fraction proportions of RIS in sediments with AD also sharply decreased. Determination of standard methods for sludge and soil caused the distortion of pollutant fraction analysis in sediment. Similarly, the quality standard of sludge and soil was inappropriate for sediment quality assessment due to the differences in pollutant fraction pattern between sediment and soils/sludge. Totally, soil and sludge standards are inapplicable for freshwater sediment pollutant determination and quality judgment. This study would greatly advance the establishment of freshwater sediment determination methods and quality standards.

Substantial increase in P release following conversion of coastal wetlands to aquaculture ponds from altered kinetic exchange and resupply capacity

The reclamation of wetlands and its subsequent conversion to aquaculture may alter regional nutrient (im)mobilization and cycling, although direct assessments of phosphorus (P) cycling and its budget balance following wetland conversion are currently scarce. Here, parallel field experiments were conducted to investigate and compare the availability and mobilization mechanisms of P from natural coastal wetlands and the adjacent converted aquaculture ponds based on high-resolution diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) and dialysis (HR-Peeper) techniques and the DGT-induced fluxes in sediments (DIFS) model. The study found that the conversion of wetland to pond strongly reduced the sediment P pool by changing its forms and distribution. High-resolution data showed that concentrations of labile P and soluble reactive P across the sediment-water profiles were markedly enhanced by the converted aquaculture pond, although they exhibited large spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Moreover, the synchronous distribution of labile P, iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) across profiles in coastal wetlands indicated that the dissolution of Fe (III) oxyhydroxide-phosphate complexes coupled with sulfate reduction were the main mechanisms regulating sediment P mobilization in coastal areas. However, the converted aquaculture pond weakened or even reversed this dependence by decoupling the Fe-S-P reactions by changing the sediment structure and nutrient balance. Substantial increases in labile P, Fe and S fluxes in the pond suggested the conversion of wetland to aquaculture facilitated the internal release of P, Fe and S from sediment into water. The high resupply parameter (R) and desorption rate (k_-1) combined with low response time (T_c) in the pond, as fitted by DIFS model, indicated the strong resupply capacity and fast kinetic exchange of sediment P across the sediment-water interface, which is consistent with the high P diffusion fluxes recorded in the pond. It was concluded that converted aquaculture ponds act as an important source of P release in coastal areas, potentially exacerbating water quality degradation and eutrophication. Specific initiatives and actions are therefore urgently needed to alleviate the internal P-loading during aquaculture.

Moderate salinity improves the availability of soil P by regulating P-cycling microbial communities in coastal wetlands

Accelerated sea-level rise is expected to cause the salinization of freshwater wetlands, but the responses to salinity of the availability of soil phosphorus (P) and of microbial genes involved in the cycling of P remain unexplored. We conducted a field experiment to investigate the effects of salinity on P cycling by soil microbial communities and their regulatory roles on P availability in coastal freshwater and brackish wetlands. Salinity was positively correlated with P availability, with higher concentrations of labile P but lower concentrations of moderately labile P in the brackish wetland. The diversity and richness of microbial communities involved in P cycling were higher in the brackish wetland than the freshwater wetland. Salinity substantially altered the composition of the P-cycling microbial community, in which those of the brackish wetland were separated from those of the freshwater wetland. Metagenomic sequence analysis indicated that functional genes involved in the solubilization of inorganic P and the subsequent transport and regulation of P were more abundant in coastal soils. The relative abundances of most of the target genes differed between the wetlands, with higher abundances of P-solubilization (gcd and ppa) and -mineralization (phoD, phy, and ugpQ) genes and lower abundances of P-transport genes (pstB, ugpA, ugpB, ugpE, and pit) in the brackish wetland. A significant positive correlation between the concentration of labile P and the abundances of the target genes suggested that salinity may, at least in part, improve P availability by regulating the P-cycling microbial community. Our results suggest that the P-cycling microbial community abundance and P availability respond positively to moderate increases in salinity by promoting the microbial solubilization and mineralization of soil P. Changes in microbial communities and microbially mediated P cycling may represent microbial strategies to adapt to moderate salinity levels, which in turn control soil function and nutrient balance.

Spatiotemporal distributions and relationships of phosphorus content, phosphomonoesterase activity, and bacterial phosphomonoesterase genes in sediments from a eutrophic brackish water lake in Chile

Phosphorus (P) cycling by microbial activity is highly relevant in the eutrophication of lakes. In this context, the contents of organic (P_o) and inorganic (P_i) phosphorus, the activity of acid (ACP) and alkaline (ALP) phosphomonoesterase (Pase), and the abundances of bacterial Pase genes (phoD, phoC, and phoX) were studied in sediments from Budi Lake, a eutrophic coastal brackish water lake in Chile. Our results showed spatiotemporal variations in P fractions, Pase activities, and Pase gene abundances. In general, our results showed higher contents of P_i (110-144 mg kg^-1), P_o (512-576 mg kg^-1), and total P (647-721 mg kg^-1) in sediments from the more anthropogenized sampling sites in summer compared with those values of P_i (86-127 mg kg^-1), P_o (363-491 mg kg^-1) and total P (449-618 mg kg^-1) in less anthropogenized sampling sites in winter. In concordance, sediments showed higher Pase activities (μg nitrophenyl phosphate g^-1 h^-1) in sediments from the more anthropogenized sampling sites (9.7-22.7 for ACP and 5.9 to 9.6 for ALP) compared with those observed in less anthropogenized sampling sites in winter (4.2-12.9 for ACP and 0.3 to 6.7 for ALP). Higher abundances (gene copy g^-1 sediment) of phoC (8.5-19 × 10⁸), phoD (9.2-47 × 10⁶), and phoX (8.5-26 × 10⁶) genes were also found in sediments from the more anthropogenized sampling sites in summer compared with those values of phoC (0.1-1.1 × 10⁸), phoD (1.4-2.4 × 10⁶) and phoX (0.7-1.2 × 10⁶) genes in the less anthropogenized sites in winter. Our results also showed a positive correlation between P contents, Pase activities, and abundances of bacterial Pase genes, independent of seasonality. The present study provided information on the microbial activity involved in P cycling in sediments of Budi Lake, which may be used in further research as indicators for the monitoring of eutrophication of lakes.

Biogeochemical behavior of P in the soil and porewater of a low-salinity estuarine wetland: Availability, diffusion kinetics, and mobilization mechanism

Estuarine wetlands, which typically store large amounts of phosphorus (P), are experiencing increased salinity as well as changed environmental factors caused by rising sea levels. In this study, the seasonal dynamics of P speciation, availability, and biogeochemical couplings with iron (Fe)-sulfur (S) in soil and porewater were measured in a low-salinity estuarine wetland using in situ high-resolution diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and dialysis (HR-Peeper) techniques. The diffusion kinetics and resupply capacity of P from the soil phase to solution were simulated using a DGT-induced fluxes in soils (DIFS) model. The transition from freshwater to brackish wetlands reduced soil P pools and shifted to more recalcitrant speciation. The concentration of DGT-labile P across the soil-water profiles ranged from 0.002 to 0.039 (mean: 0.015) mg L^-1, which increased with increasing salinity in both the field and mesocosm experiments. The distributions of labile and soluble P showed high heterogeneity across the profiles, and there were some sharp peak values below the soil-water interface (SWI), which significantly increased the concentration and lability of P. The strong coupling between labile P and Fe (S) provided direct evidence for the coexistence of iron reduction (IR) and sulfate reduction (SR) in the estuary, while IR might predominate in P mobilization in the brackish environment because of higher labile Fe concentrations and stronger Fe-P couplings. The diffusion fluxes of P were positive at both sites, demonstrating that the kinetics of P were from the soils to the overlying water. Higher R and k_-1 values fitted in the DIFS model implied that a stronger resupply capacity and desorption rate and thus faster remobilization kinetics of P occurred with increasing salinity. Our findings indicated that increased salinity (even at low levels) can alter the desorption rate and resupply capacity of soil P in estuarine wetlands and accelerate P remobilization and release by regulating the IR and SR processes, thereby leading to the deterioration of water quality.

Fraction distribution and dynamic cycling of phosphorus in lacustrine sediment at Inexpressible Island, Antarctica

Phosphorus (P) chemistry and its dynamic cycling are essential for understanding aquatic primary productivity and ecosystem structure. However, there is a lack of knowledge on P chemistry in pristine aquatic ecosystems, such as in Antarctica. Here, we applied the Standards, Measurements and Testing Program (SMT) procedure and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to reveal P speciation in two types of lacustrine sediment cores collected from Inexpressible Island, Ross Sea, East Antarctica. The Positive Matrix Factorization Model and Generalized Additive Models were applied to quantitatively identify the P sources and estimate relative effects of various environmental factors on the speciation. Our results demonstrate that orthophosphate, mainly as Ca-P, is the major component and the ortho-monoesters are the predominant organic phosphorus (OP) form in lacustrine sediments. Ornithogenic lacustrine sediments have a higher content of P as Ca-P than sediments with little or no penguin influence. Our model further suggests that penguin guano is the most important source for Ca-P, accounting for 80%, while detrital input is the predominant source for Fe/Al-P (up to 90%). The content of ortho-monoesters, as revealed by NMR, declines with depth, reflecting mineralization process of OP in the sediments. Moreover, we observed higher relative proportions of organic P in the sediments with little guano influence and the deposition of organic P are likely facilitated by microbial mats. Overall, our data suggest that burial of P in Antarctic lakes is sensitive to different P sources and sedimentary environments. The relatively higher bioavailable phosphorus in lacustrine sediments largely controls growth of aquatic microbial mats in oligotrophic lakes and ponds in Antarctica. The sediment profile data also indicate that P burial increased during the Medieval Climate Anomaly period, and climate warming is more conducive to P burial through the expansion of penguin populations and productivity of microbial mats. Our findings represent the first systematic understanding of natural P cycling dynamics and its main controlling factors in pristine ponds with different organic sources in Antarctica.

Spatiotemporal variations in phosphorus concentrations in the water and sediment of Jiaozhou Bay and sediment phosphorus release potential

Phosphorus contamination in urbanized bays has been a major concern because the bay restoration is often hindered by complex P sources and behaviors. This study examined the spatiotemporal changes of P species and exchange potential in/between the water and sediment of the Jiaozhou Bay. The results indicated that dissolved P (TDP) and inorganic P (DIP) in the water ranged from 7.8-128.7 and 1.8-14.1 μg/L, respectively; while total P (TP) in the sediment ranged from 213.4-638.7 mg/kg. The TDP and DIP concentrations in the water were high in winter and low in summer, and generally decreased from northeastern or northern areas to southwestern or southern areas mainly due to phytoplankton bloom cycles and riverine and wastewater inputs. TP in the sediment was lower in the northwestern area due to solid dilution effect by the settlement of settled coarser suspended particles. Changes in aquatic geochemical conditions from rivers to bay caused P accumulation in estuarine sediment, with higher P partition in organic fraction (40%). Compared to the estuarine sediment, higher fractions of P were associated with carbonate (34%) and iron oxide (17%) minerals in the bay sediment. Equilibrium P concentrations at zero sorption (EPC₀) were 4.1-149.8 μg/L, which was substantially higher than the DIP concentration, demonstrating P release potential from the sediment. In addition, the P release potential was high in the northeastern area while P partition coefficient or buffer intensity (K_d) was high in the northwestern area. EPC₀ was significantly positively correlated with soluble and exchangeable P in the sediment while K_d was significantly negatively correlated. These results can provide improved insights into P behaviors in an urbanized bay, particularly the P release potential and spatiotemporal change.

Review on strategies of close-to-natural wetland restoration and a brief case plan for a typical wetland in northern China

Wetlands play an important role in sustaining ecosystems on the earth, which regulate water resources, adjust local climate and produce food for human beings, etc. However, wetlands are facing huge challenges due to human activities and other natural evolution, such as area shrinkage, function weakening and biodiversity decrease, and so on, therefore, some wetlands need to be urgently restored. In this study, the main technology components of close-to-natural restoration of wetlands were summarized. The ecological water requirement and water resource allocation can be optimized for the water balance between social, economy and ecology, which is a key prerequisite for maintaining wetland ecosystem. The pollution of wetland sediments and soils can be assessed by various indicators to provide the scientific basis for natural restoration of wetland base, and suitable strategies should be taken according to the actual conditions of wetland bases. The hydrological connectivity in wetlands and with related water system can be numerically simulated to make the optimal plan for improvement of hydrological connectivity. The ecological restoration of wetlands with the synergetic function of plants, animals and microorganisms was summarized, to improve the quality of wetland water environment and maintain the ecosystem stability. Based on the wetland close-to-natural restoration strategies, a brief ecological restoration plan for a typical wetland, Zaozhadian Wetland, near Xiong'an New Area in the north China was proposed from water resource guarantee, base pollution management, hydrological connectivity improvement and biological restoration. The close-to-natural restoration shows more effective, sustainable and long-lasting and thus a practical prospect.

Effect of mineral loaded biochar on the leaching performances of nitrate and phosphate in two contrasting soils from the coastal estuary area

Coastal estuary area is an important sink for the land-based or/and atmosphere-based nutrients, and is suffering a serious destruction derived from the intensifying human activities, which subsequently threatens the marine environment. Therefore, increasing soil retention capacities of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) and reducing their leaching amount to sea water become a critical issue needed to be urgently addressed. In this study, a 38-day incubation and leaching experiment was conducted with two contrasting soils taken from the coastal estuary area, including the wetland and agricultural soils. Four kinds of biochars (BC), including one pure reed straw BC (BC₀), and three mineral loaded BCs produced through the co-pyrolysis of reed straw with CaO (BC_Ca), MgO (BC_Mg), and shell powder (BC_SP), respectively, were used to explore their effects on the leaching performances of nitrate-N and phosphate-P. The results demonstrated that the application of mineral loaded BCs could generally decrease the leaching amount of phosphate-P, while showed little effect on the nitrate-N leaching, compared to the controls. The positive improvement in soil nutrient retention capacity, mostly contributed by the increased adsorption on BC surface and into aperture, was suggested as the main mechanism for the decrease in nitrate-N and phosphate-P leaching. Compared to the agricultural soil, high clay content in the wetland soil could weaken the reduction potential in leaching losses of nitrate-N and phosphate-P derived from the newly introduced minerals with BC application. Furthermore, our results also indicated that the mineral loaded BCs may slow down the conversion rate of nutrients from organic forms to inorganic forms supported by the decreased enzymatic activity, which would be beneficial to the long term retention of nutrients in soil. Overall, based on the findings in the present study, the BC_Mg and Ca loaded BCs were respectively recommended for the wetland and agricultural soils.

The effect of secondary capping on the control of phosphorus release from sediment by activated thin-layer capping with Al-PIA

It is well-known that the activated thin-layer capping covering by secondary capping of contaminated sediment poses a threat to the inactivation of activated material. In this study, the static simulation experiment was conducted to study the effect of secondary capping thickness by sediment on the control of TP release from the sediment by aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (Al-PIA), and to propose the phosphorus adsorption pathway of Al-PIA. The results showed that Al-PIA could effectively reduce the release of phosphorus pollutants from the sediment at the capping intensity of 2 kg/m². When the secondary capping thickness of sediment were 0, 2, 4, 7, 10, and 15 mm, the average removal rates of TP were 87.57%, 76.39%, 61.22%, 51.32%, 41.93%, and 32.11%, respectively, indicating that the removal efficiency of phosphorus decreased with the increase of the secondary capping thickness of the sediment. The adsorbed phosphorus by Al-PIA was mainly non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) in inorganic phosphorus. With the increase of the secondary capping thickness of sediment, the NAIP proportion of phosphorus adsorbed by Al-PIA increased. Meanwhile, the removal rate of phosphorus in the activated capping system showed a first increase and then decrease trend, and the removal rates of total phosphorus (TP), inorganic phosphorus (IP), and organic phosphorus (OP) were obvious except for that of organic phosphorus (OP).

Conversion mechanisms between organic sulfur and inorganic sulfur in surface sediments in coastal rivers

Geochemical processes of sulfur (S) in river aquatic systems play a crucial role in environmental evolution. In this study, the distributions and sources of reduced inorganic sulfur (RIS) and organic sulfur (OS) in coastal river surface sediments were investigated. The results indicated that OS dominated total S (80%), and OS (i.e., humic acid sulfur, HAS; fulvic acid sulfur, FAS) correlated with the availability of labile organic matter (OM) and reactive iron (Fe). Terrigenous inputs and sulfurization contributed to the enrichment of FAS through the S reduction. Autochthonous biological inputs were potential sources of HAS from S oxidization. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the main sources of S in surface sediments were deposited as the form of organic ester-sulfate. Aquatic life could break S down further, producing reduced S compounds accumulated as thiols and RIS in anoxic sediments. RIS was dominated by acid volatile sulfur (AVS) and chromium (II)-reducible sulfur (CRS). Reactive Fe oxides were major control factors for the conversation from hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) to AVS, whereas elemental sulfide (ES) controlled the conversion from AVS into CRS in coastal rivers.

Effects of suspended particular matters, excess PO43-, and salinity on phosphorus speciation in coastal river sediments

Phosphorus (P) is an essential biogenic element in aquatic ecosystem, and its speciation in sediment may influence the water quality. The composition of P in suspended particular matters (SPM) and sediments were analyzed. Metal ions bonding PO₄^3- and chelating organic P (OP) were explored by Visual MINTEQ simulation and infrared spectroscopy. Inorganic P (IP) mainly comprises orthophosphate and pyrophosphate in SPM. OP mainly includes α-glycerol phosphate, β-Gly, monophosphate, and mononucleotides from aquatic plants in SPM. Cyclotella, Nitzschia, Amphiprore, and terrestrial C₃ plants are the main source of aquatic plants in JH, while they are from Oscillatoria and Merismopedia in JL. These aquatic plants directly determine whether OP or IP is taken to surface sediments during the setting of SPM. The bonding between PO₄^3- and Ca is more preferential than Al and Fe, so the excess PO₄^3- makes Ca compounds bonding IP (Ca-IP) and Al/Fe/Mn (hydr) oxides associated IP (Al/Fe/Mn-IP) dominant, but limited PO₄^3- preferentially contributes more Ca-IP. Metal ions in saline water can firmly cheat with OP via P-OH and/or P=O groups to promote the burial of OP.

Effects of macro metals on alkaline phosphatase activity under conditions of sulfide accumulation

Alkaline phosphatase (AP) is commonly found in aquatic ecosystems as an extracellular enzyme closely related to the biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus. Although the AP activity (APA) is conventionally thought to be a main response to PO₄^3- starvation, significant effects of macro metal elements (Al, Fe, and Ca) and S on the APA were found in this study. The APA was reduced by Al primarily through the adsorption of the enzyme onto AlOOH colloids. Fe²⁺ inhibited the APA via a mechanism involving free radical oxidation. The main mechanism by which Ca²⁺ inhibited the APA was by competing with Mg²⁺ and Zn²⁺ for the active sites of the enzyme. Excessive S^2- could reduce the APA by removing Zn²⁺ from the active sites of the enzyme. The inhibition of APA could be reversed if some metal ions (e.g., Fe²⁺) were precipitated by S^2- under reducing conditions. Therefore, in anaerobic ecosystems, the effects of macro metals on APA under conditions of sulfide accumulation may have innovative implications for phosphorus management.

Redox-dependent phosphorus burial and regeneration in an offshore sulfidic sediment core in North Yellow Sea, China

Phosphorus (P) pollution can trigger severe marine eutrophication, which further leads to harmful algal blooms, and a deterioration of sea water quality. The P burial and regeneration in offshore sediments can directly affect the eutrophication levels of estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Although many researches on redox-dependent P burial and regeneration were studied, such process in the presence of silicate is still poorly understood, and the effects of pyrite formation on organic P (OP) burial and regeneration also remain unclear. In this study, a sulfidic sediment core was collected in the offshore of an estuary in the north Yellow Sea, China. Results indicated that indigenous biological input was found to be the primary source of organic matter in upper sediments. The regenerated P under reducing conditions was dominated by labile FeP and OP. The PO₄^3- released from FeP and OP that could be captured by Al/Fe/Mn (oxyhydr) oxides in surface sediments and Ca minerals in deep sediments. CaP, AlP, unreactive Al/Fe-Si-P and some stable metal chelated OP were the main burial P fractions. Sulfate reduction and formation of insoluble metal sulfides including the pyrite promoted OP decomposition by anaerobic decomposition, removing metal ions from the "metal-OP" chelates and restoring the phosphatase activity.

Characteristics of organic phosphorus fractions in soil from water-level fluctuation zone by solution 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance and enzymatic hydrolysis

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient element for biological growth that can contribute to eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. Water trophic status and algae growth are primarily related to the content of bioavailable P, which is primarily related to enzymatically hydrolysable organic P(EHOP) and dissolved inorganic P(IP). In this study, soil samples from the water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) were collected from a tributary of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) to characterize the properties of organic P(OP) fractions using solution ³¹P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and enzymatic hydrolysis. ³¹P-NMR showed that orthophosphate was the main part of the bioavailable P in the WLFZ soil and accounted for 80.4% of the NaOH-EDTA extractable total P (NaOH-EDTA TP), while phosphate monoester accounted for 60.5% of NaOH-EDTA extractable OP (NaOH-EDTA OP). The soil properties and replenishment from the mainstream of the Yangtze River to the Pengxi River have a certain effect on the content and distribution of P forms in the WLFZ soil of the tributary. The EHOP accounted for 28.1% of the NaOH-EDTA OP, and a significant positive correlation was observed between labile monoester P and EHOP and organic matter (OM). The water-soluble OP(H₂O-OP), bicarbonate-extractable OP(NaHCO₃-OP), and Fe- and Al-associated OP(Fe/Al-OP) were significantly hydrolyzed by phosphatase and thus exhibited great release potential. The ranking of the bioavailability of OP was Fe/Al-OP > H₂O-OP > NaHCO₃-OP. Phytate-like P were mainly found in H₂O-OP and NaHCO₃-OP, which indicated that periodic submersion-emersion cycles promoted the release of phytate-like P from Fe/Al-OP into the water column of the TGR. These observations suggest that when the external P input was effectively controlled, a huge risk of release of the internal OP from the WLFZ soil, and the biogeochemical cycling of the bioavailable P played an important role in maintaining the eutrophication of the reservoir.
