Biochar obtained from eucalyptus, rice hull, and native bamboo as an alternative to decrease mobility of hexazinone, metribuzin, and quinclorac in a tropical soil

Mobile herbicides have a high potential for groundwater contamination. An alternative to decrease the mobility of herbicides is to apply materials with high sorbent capacity to the soil, such as biochars. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of eucalyptus, rice hull, and native bamboo biochar amendments on sorption and desorption of hexazinone, metribuzin, and quinclorac in a tropical soil. The sorption-desorption was evaluated using the batch equilibrium method at five concentrations of hexazinone, metribuzin, and quinclorac. Soil was amended with eucalyptus, rice hull, and native bamboo biochar at a rate of 0 (control-unamended) and 1% (w w-1), corresponding to 0 and 12 t ha-1, respectively. The amount of sorbed herbicides in the unamended soil followed the decreasing order: quinclorac (65.9%) > metribuzin (21.4%) > hexazinone (16.0%). Native bamboo biochar provided the highest sorption compared to rice hull and eucalyptus biochar-amended soils for the three herbicides. The amount of desorbed herbicides in the unamended soil followed the decreasing order: metribuzin (18.35%) > hexazinone (15.9%) > quinclorac (15.1%). Addition of native bamboo biochar provided the lowest desorption among the biochar amendments for the three herbicides. In conclusion, the biochars differently affect the sorption and desorption of hexazinone, metribuzin, and quinclorac mobile herbicides in a tropical soil. The addition of eucalyptus, rice hull, and native bamboo biochars is a good alternative to increase the sorption of hexazinone, metribuzin, and quinclorac, thus, reducing mobility and availability of these herbicides to nontarget organisms in soil.

Clinoptilolite and iron sorption/desorption under multiple pH conditions: Testing a substrate for passive treatment of acidic, iron-rich solutions

Equilibrium sorption and desorption experiments were conducted with clinoptilolite to evaluate the potential sorption/desorption of iron during different pH conditions. Sorption experiments indicated a partitioning of 0% to 17% of the iron in solution given pH of 2 to 4. The pH 2 solution was able to desorb 70% of the iron that was captured from a pH 3 solution. The largest desorption and sorption of iron and corresponding pH represent the end points of iron capture primarily by sorption/exchange. These endpoints are the estimated pH_pzc of 2.5 and the initial precipitation point of iron(II) at pH ~3.5. This acidity range is where clinoptilolite is able to capture iron without precipitation or the occurrence of full surface protonation. The inability of the highest acidity to remove all sorbed iron represents the greater bound iron that will not readily desorb with a change in pH. This retained iron creates a metastable state of the clinoptilolite that has a lower sorption capacity but reflects the ability of clinoptilolite to retain a sorbed transition metal with changes in pH. As pH varies, clinoptilolite may evolve in a sequence of metastable states reflective of its ability to capture or retain metals. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Clinoptilolite is a capable reactive substrate, but its sorption/exchange effectiveness at low and variable pH and ability to retain captured metals was unknown. Clinoptilolite retains its metal capture properties to a pH of 2.5 where surface protonation and mineral degradation likely occurs. The ability of clinoptilolite to retain captured iron under greater acidity reflects an evolution of its sorption/retention capacity.

Fate of the nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory veterinary drug flunixin in agricultural soils and dairy manure

A large percentage of flunixin, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug widely used for treating livestock, is excreted in intact form and thus potentially available for environmental transport. As the fate of flunixin in the environment is unknown, our objective was to quantify sorption, desorption, and transformation in five agricultural soils and manure using batch equilibrium methods. Concentrations of flunixin and degradation products were determined by high performance liquid chromatography time of flight mass spectrometry. For all studied soils, sorption of flunixin exhibited linear character, with both linear and Freundlich models providing adequate fit. Linear sorption coefficients varied from 8 to 112 L kg^-1. The strongest Pearson correlations with sorption coefficients were for clay content (r = 0.8693), total nitrogen (r = 0.7998), and organic carbon (r = 0.6291). Desorption of the reversibly bound fraction (3-10% of total sorbed flunixin) from all five studied soils exhibited non-hysteretic character suggesting low affinity of this fraction of flunixin to soil. Flunixin degradation in soils was relatively slow, exhibiting half-lives of 39-203 days, thus providing time for off-site transport and environmental contamination. The biological impacts of flunixin at environmentally relevant concentrations must be determined given its environmental behavior and extensive use as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug in livestock.
