Improving ultrafiltration membrane performance with pre-deposited carbon nanotubes/nanofibers layers for drinking water treatment

Enhanced water permeability and fouling resistance properties of ultrafiltration membranes incorporated with hydroxyapatite decorated orange-peel-derived activated carbon nanocomposites

Hydroxyapatite-decorated activated carbon (HAp/AC) nanocomposite was synthesized and utilized as a nanofiller to fabricate a novel type of polyethersulfone (PES) nanocomposite ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. Activated carbon (AC) derived from orange peel was synthesized by low-temperature pyrolysis at 400 °C. A hydroxyapatite/AC (HAp/AC) nanocomposite was developed by a simple one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method. The UF membrane was fabricated by intercalating HAp/AC fillers into PES casting solution by the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The prepared membranes exhibited a lower water contact angle than the pristine PES membrane. The hybrid membrane with 4 wt% HAp/AC nanocomposite displayed 4.6 times higher pure water flux (~660 L/m² h) than that of the pristine membrane (143 L/m² h). In static adsorption experiments, it was found that the amount of humic acid (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorbed by the HAp/AC-PES hybrid membrane was much lower than that of the original membrane due to the electrostatic repulsive forces between them and the surface of the membrane. Irreversible fouling was reduced from 33 to 6 % for HA and from 46 to 8 % for BSA after HAp/AC was incorporated into the PES matrix. After 7 cycles of water-BSA-water, the HAp/AC-PES hybrid membrane maintained a high pure water flux of 540 L/m² h with an excellent flux recovery ratio (FRR), demonstrating the long-term stability of the membranes. The developed UF membranes outperformed the original PES membranes in terms of permeability, selectivity, and antifouling.

Coupling sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation and coagulation for membrane fouling mitigation in algae-laden water treatment

To alleviate algal fouling in membrane water treatment processes, conventional technologies such as coagulation with poly aluminum chloride (PACl) has been widely adopted by many drinking water treatment plants. However, coagulation alone exhibited relatively weak removal effect for algal pollutants, and the coagulant residues due to the excess dosage also raised concerns. Thus, a novel process of coupling sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation and PACl coagulation was proposed, integrated with membrane filtration for algae-laden water treatment. The dosages of PACl and SPC were optimized, and the SPC dosing strategies were systematically compared. The changes in the characteristics of algal pollutants were investigated, and the results revealed that the resistance of algal foulants to aggregation was decreased, and the particle size of algal foulants became larger. With the synergism of coagulation and oxidation, the degradation of fluorescent organics was strengthened, and macromolecular biopolymers were decomposed into low molecular weight organics. The fouling control efficiency was further explored, and the results indicated that both irreversible and reversible fouling were effectively controlled, among which PACl/SPC (simultaneous treatment) performed best with the irreversible fouling reduced by 90.5%, while the efficiency of SPC-PACl (SPC followed by PACl) was relatively lower (57.3%). The fouling mechanism was altered by slowing the formation of cake filtration, and the reduction of algal cells played a more important role for the fouling alleviation. The interface properties of contaminated membranes (i.e., functional groups, images, and micromorphology) were characterized, and the efficiency of the proposed strategy was further verified. The proposed strategy exhibits great application values for improving membrane performance during algae-laden water treatment.

Improved permeability and antifouling performance of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes tailored by hydroxyapatite/boron nitride nanocomposites

To extend the use of polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes in water process engineering, the membrane's wettability and anti-fouling properties should be further improved. In this context, hydroxyapatite/boron nitride (HAp/BN) nanocomposites have been prepared and intercalated into PES membranes using a non-solvent-induced phase separation process. High-quality 2D transparent boron nitride nanosheets (BN NSs) were prepared using an environmentally friendly and green-template assisted synthesis method in which 1D hexagonal hydroxyapatite nanosheets (HAp NRs) were uniformly distributed and hydrothermally immobilized at 180 °C. SEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy techniques were used to characterize the HAp/BN nanocomposites. PES membranes intercalated with various nanocomposite amounts (0-4 wt %) were also characterized by permeability, porosity, and contact angle measurements. Additional pathways for water molecule transport were promoted by the high surface area of the BN NSs, resulting in high permeability. Membrane wettability and antifouling properties were also improved by the inclusion of negative charge groups (OH^- and PO₄^3-) on HAp. Hybrid membranes containing 4 wt% HAp/BN showed the best overall performance with ∼97% increase in water flux, 90% rejection of bovine serum albumin (BSA), high water flux recovery ratio, low irreversible fouling, and high reversible fouling pattern. The intercalation of HAp/BN with the PES matrix therefore opens up a new direction to enhance the PES UF membranes' hydrophilicity, water flux, and antifouling capacity.

Integrated Membrane-Electrocoagulation System for Removal of Celestine Blue Dyes in Wastewater

The textile industry provides for the needs of people especially in apparel and household items. The industry also discharges dye-containing wastewater that is typically challenging to treat. Despite the application of the biological and chemical treatments for the treatment of textile wastewater, these methods have their own drawbacks such as non-environment friendly, high cost and energy intensive. This research investigates the efficiency of the celestine blue dye removal from simulated textile wastewater by electrocoagulation (EC) method using iron (Fe) electrodes through an electrolytic cell, integrated with nylon 6,6 nanofiber (NF) membrane filtration for the separation of the flocculants from aqueous water. Based on the results, the integrated system achieves a high dye removal efficiency of 79.4%, by using 1000 ppm of sodium chloride as the electrolyte and 2 V of voltage at a constant pH of 7 and 10 ppm celestine blue dye solution, compared to the standalone EC method in which only 43.2% removal was achieved. Atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis was used to identify the traces of iron in the residual EC solution confirming the absence of iron. The EC-integrated membrane system thus shows superior performance compared to the conventional method whereby an additional 10–30% of dye was removed at 1 V and 2 V using similar energy consumptions.

Quantitative analysis of cake characteristics based on SEM imaging during coagulation-ultrafiltration process

Cake formed by flocs is a crucial factor to affect membrane fouling during coagulation-ultrafiltration process. To investigate the role of floc properties on cake, cake characteristics under various coagulant dosage conditions were calculated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging. Results found that one SEM image with × 5000 magnification could accurately estimate cake porosity with relative error lower than 5.00% for all conditions, whereas more SEM images with × 10,000 magnification or × 20,000 magnification should be applied to calculate cake porosity precisely. This could be explained by different pore information of SEM images with various magnifications. Compared to single SEM image with × 10,000 magnification and × 20,000 magnification, single SEM image with × 5000 magnification contained the most comprehensive pore information and slightly overestimated pore area for pore smaller than 0.4 μm² due to lower resolution. To verify feasibility by SEM image evaluating cake characteristics, cake porosity calculated by SEM image and Carman-Kozeny equation were analyzed. The results showed that cake porosity estimated by these two methods were nearly the same, proving the feasibility of this method. Moreover, with the increase of coagulant dosage, cake porosity presented similar variation with floc average size, indicating that floc average size was likely to dominate cake porosity in this study. For pore characteristics, pore average characteristic length and pore average area were in accordance with floc fractal dimension, whereas pore fractal dimension and pore amount were consistent with floc average size. This gives specific information about the relation between floc properties and cake characteristics.

Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide and Sodium Hypochlorite Aging on Properties and Performance of Polyethersulfone Ultrafiltration Membrane

Chemical reaction of main polymer and additive with oxidative cleaning agents plays an important role in aging of polymeric membrane for water and wastewater treatment. As a green and powerful oxidant, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can achieve good cleaning efficacy under alkaline condition, but its influence on membrane aging was poorly understood. In this study, degradation of polyethersulfone (PES) membrane due to H2O2 exposure under alkaline condition (pH 9 and 11) was holistically investigated by humic acid (HA) filtration experiments and multiple membrane characterization techniques, with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) aging examined as a comparison. Membrane permeability and HA retention rate was hardly changed by H2O2 aging at an exposure dose of 500 g·h/L, whereas NaClO aging led to substantial increase of membrane permeability and significant decrease of retention ability. Meanwhile, H2O2 aging slightly increased fouling propensity with HA filtration, while NaClO aging resulted in more serious fouling. ATR-FTIR and XPS analysis revealed much less degradation of PES and hydrophilic additive by H2O2 than that by NaClO, and membrane morphology and surface properties were characterized to explain the variation of filtration performance. Overall, compared with cleaning with NaClO, membrane degradation can be minimized by cleaning with H2O2.
