Ligand enhanced pharmaceutical wastewater treatment with Fenton process using pyrite as the catalyst: Column experiments

Inorganic Fe-O and Fe-S oxidoreductases: paradigms for prebiotic chemistry and the evolution of enzymatic activity in biology

Oxidoreductases play crucial roles in electron transfer during biological redox reactions. These reactions are not exclusive to protein-based biocatalysts; nano-size (<100 nm), fine-grained inorganic colloids, such as iron oxides and sulfides, also participate. These nanocolloids exhibit intrinsic redox activity and possess direct electron transfer capacities comparable to their biological counterparts. The unique metal ion architecture of these nanocolloids, including electron configurations, coordination environment, electron conductivity, and the ability to promote spontaneous electron hopping, contributes to their transfer capabilities. Nano-size inorganic colloids are believed to be among the earliest 'oxidoreductases' to have 'evolved' on early Earth, playing critical roles in biological systems. Representing a distinct type of biocatalysts alongside metalloproteins, these nanoparticles offer an early alternative to protein-based oxidoreductase activity. While the roles of inorganic nano-sized catalysts in current Earth ecosystems are intuitively significant, they remain poorly understood and underestimated. Their contribution to chemical reactions and biogeochemical cycles likely helped shape and maintain the balance of our planet's ecosystems. However, their potential applications in biomedical, agricultural, and environmental protection sectors have not been fully explored or exploited. This review examines the structure, properties, and mechanisms of such catalysts from a material's evolutionary standpoint, aiming to raise awareness of their potential to provide innovative solutions to some of Earth's sustainability challenges.

Study on the removal effect and mechanism of calcined pyrite powder on Cr(VI)

Pyrite exhibits considerable potential as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment. However, few pyrite adsorbents are directly obtained from natural pyrite, as most are composite materials that require a complex preparation process. To develop a pyrite-based adsorbent with a simple preparation process, pyrite was processed by calcination at 400, 600, and 800 °C for 4 h and ball-milled into a fine powder. The adsorption properties of the pyrite powder were systematically explored. The calcined pyrite powder was characterized by SEM-EDS and XRD. The results revealed that the pyrite calcined at 600 °C exhibited excellent adsorption properties and was primarily composed of Fe7S8. The optimum conditions for Cr(VI) removal were a temperature of 45 °C, an adsorbent dosage of 1 g, an equilibration time of 60 min, and an initial pH of 3. Moreover, the calcined pyrite powder exhibited excellent reusability, and the Cr(VI) removal rate exceeded 65% after three cycles. The Cr(VI) adsorption on pyrite can be well described by the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The calcination temperature is the main factor affecting the adsorption performance of pyrite. Therefore, the calcined pyrite powder is expected to be an excellent adsorbent for Cr(VI) in the wastewater treatment industry.

Al/TiO2 composite as a photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants

TiO₂ is a catalyst that can effectively degrade organic pollutants with the following advantages, low cost, simplicity, and pollution-free nature. In recent years, the non-noble plasmonic metal Al has effectively improved the photocatalytic performance of TiO₂. However, the current reports are limited to the photocatalytic performance of Al/TiO₂ on the substrate, which requires expensive large-scale vacuum equipment. In this study, monodispersed Al particles were proposed to enhance the photocatalysis of TiO₂. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Al is proven by finite difference time domain method (FDTF) simulation. Then, Al/TiO₂ composites were prepared by combining monodispersed Al and TiO₂. The influence of ligand (glutathione (GSH), glutamic acid (GAG), or 3-mercaptopropane acid (MPA)), Al size (40 to 300 nm), and the ratio of Al to TiO₂ (0.5:1 to 10:1) on the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) by Al/TiO₂ were discussed. The obtained results showed that the Al/TiO₂ composite which were prepared with 200 nm Al particles, GSH as the ligand bridge, and an Al:TiO₂ ratio of 1:1 had the best MB degradation effect. It can degrade 97.7% of 10 mg/L MB in 100 min. The reaction rate of the Al/TiO₂ composite with the optimal photocatalytic performance is k=3.36×10^-2 min^-1, which is 10 times that of P25 TiO₂. In addition, Al/TiO₂ has a good photocatalytic effect on rhodamine B (RhB) and crystal violet (CV). Therefore, Al/TiO₂ composites with the advantage of high efficiency are a type of potential photocatalytic material that can be used for the photocatalytic treatment of organic pollutants in water.

Biomedical applications of iron sulfide-based nanozymes

Nanozymes have attracted great interest owing to their marvelous advantages, such as high stability, facile preparation, and high tunability. In particular, iron sulfide-based nanozymes (termed as ISNs), as one of the most researched nanomaterials with versatile enzyme-mimicking properties, have proved their potential in biomedical applications. In this review, we briefly summarize the classification, catalytic mechanisms of ISNs and then principally introduce ISNs’ biomedical applications in biosensors, tumor therapy, antibacterial therapy, and others, demonstrating that ISNs have promising potential for alleviating human health.

Construction of Novel Electro-Fenton Systems by Magnetically Decorating Zero-Valent Iron onto RuO2-IrO2/Ti Electrode for Highly Efficient Pharmaceutical Wastewater Treatment

The Electro-Fenton (E-Fenton) technique has shown great potential in wastewater treatment, while the sustainable and continuing supply of Fe2+ remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate the construction of a novel E-Fenton system by magnetically decorating zero-valent iron (ZVI) onto a RuO2-IrO2/Ti (ZVI-RuO2-IrO2/Ti) electrode for high-efficient treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater, which is considerably refractory and harmful to conventional biological processes. By using ZVI as a durable source of Fe(II) irons, 78.69% of COD and 76.40% of TOC may be rapidly removed by the developed ZVI-RuO2-IrO2/Ti electrode, while the ZVI-RuO2-IrO2/Ti electrode using ZVI only reduces 35.64% of COD under optimized conditions at initial COD and TOC values of 5500 mg/L and 4300 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, the increase in BOD5/COD from 0.21 to 0.52 highlights the enhanced biodegradability of the treated effluent. The analysis of a simultaneously formed precipitation on electrodes suggests that the coagulation process dominated by Fe3+/Fe2+ also plays a non-negligible role in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. In addition, the monitoring of the evolution of nitrogen elements and the formation of by-products in the E-Fenton process verifies its great capacity toward those organic pollutants found in pharmaceutical wastewater. Our study offers a practical solution for enhancing the performance of E-Fenton systems, and effectively treating refractory pharmaceutical wastewater.

Heterogeneous Advanced Oxidation Processes: Current Approaches for Wastewater Treatment

Nowadays, water pollution is one of the most dangerous environmental problems in the world. The presence of the so-called emerging pollutants in the different water bodies, impossible to eliminate through conventional biological and physical treatments used in wastewater treatment plants due to their persistent and recalcitrant nature, means that pollution continues growing throughout the world. The presence of these emerging pollutants involves serious risks to human and animal health for aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Therefore, in recent years, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been postulated as a viable, innovative and efficient technology for the elimination of these types of compounds from water bodies. The oxidation/reduction reactions triggered in most of these processes require a suitable catalyst. The most recent research focuses on the use and development of different types of heterogeneous catalysts, which are capable of overcoming some of the operational limitations of homogeneous processes such as the generation of metallic sludge, difficult separation of treated water and narrow working pH. This review details the current advances in the field of heterogeneous AOPs, Fenton processes and photocatalysts for the removal of different types of emerging pollutants.

Pyrite-mediated advanced oxidation processes: Applications, mechanisms, and enhancing strategies

Proper treatment of wastewater is one of the key issues to the sustainable development of human society, and people have been searching for high-efficiency and low-cost methods for wastewater treatment. This article reviews recent studies about pyrite-mediated advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in removing refractory organics from wastewater. The basic information of pyrite and its characteristics for AOPs are first introduced. Then, the performance and mechanisms of pyrite-mediated Fenton oxidation, electro-Fenton oxidation, and persulfate oxidation processes are carefully reviewed and presented. Natural pyrite is an abundant low-cost heterogeneous catalyst for AOPs, and the slow release of Fe²⁺ and the self-regulation of solution pH are highlighted characteristics of pyrite-mediated AOPs. In AOPs, the interaction between Fe³⁺ and pyrite facilitates the Fe²⁺ regeneration and the Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ cycle. Making pyrite into nanoparticles, assisting by ultrasound and light irradiation, and adding exogenous Fe³⁺, organic chelating agents, or biochar is effective to enhance the performance of pyrite-mediated AOPs. Based on the analyses of those pyrite-mediated AOPs and their enhancing strategies, the future development directions are proposed in the aspects of toxicity research, mechanism research, and technological coupling.

Critical review of natural iron-based minerals used as heterogeneous catalysts in peroxide activation processes: Characteristics, applications and mechanisms

Recently, an increasing number of works have been reported about iron-based materials applied as catalysts in peroxide activation processes to degrade pollutants in water. Iron-based catalysts include synthetic and natural iron-based materials. However, some synthetic iron-based materials are difficult to scale up in the practical applications due to high cost and serious secondary environmental pollution. In contrast, natural iron-based minerals are more available and cheaper, and also hold a great promise in peroxide activation processes for pollutant degradation. In this review, we classify different natural iron-based materials into two categories: iron oxide minerals (e.g., magnetite, hematite, and goethite,), and iron sulfide minerals (e.g., pyrite and pyrrhotite,). Their overview applications in peroxide activation processes for pollutant degradation in wastewaters are systematically summarized for the first time. Moreover, the peroxide activation mechanisms induced by natural minerals, and the influences of reaction conditions in different systems are discussed. Finally, the application prospects and existing drawbacks of natural iron-based minerals in the peroxide activation processes for wastewater treatment are proposed. We believe this review can shed light on the application of natural iron-based minerals in peroxide activation processes and present better perspectives for future researches.

Ultrasound-enhanced remediation of toxic dyes from wastewater by activated carbon-doped magnetic nanocomposites: analysis of real wastewater samples and surfactant effect

Water pollution has become a worldwide threat as the natural water resources are shrinking day by day. Emergent actions are needed to conserve water stocks to fulfill the sustainable development goals. Herein, we have prepared activated carbon-doped magnetic nanocomposites (AC@CoFe₂O₄) with environment friendly approach and characterized for FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, BET surface area, and pH_zpc. AC@CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposite was applied for the decolorization of toxic food dyes (rhodamine B and tartrazine) from wastewater. Effect of ultrasonic waves, pH, contact time, surfactants, temperature, and analysis of real wastewater systems were studied. Adsorption isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamics of the experiment were calculated for the present removal process. The effect of ultrasonication shows that the maximum removal percentage for RhB was found to be 92% and for tartrazine, it was found to be 86% at 60 min. Ultrasound-assisted adsorption and degradation revealed good results because of the formation of highly active ^·H and ^·OH radicals in the liquid through the decomposition of water molecules by the formation of hot spots under ultrasonic waves. Highest decolorization of 69% was obtained for RhB with anionic surfactant SDS and climax decolorization of tartrazine was acquired in case of CTAB as 60.5%. Analysis of real wastewater samples shows that the decolorization of RhB was found to be ~ 91% from well-water and ~ 95% removal of tartrazine was observed from submersible water on AC@CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposites. The decolorization best fitted (R² < 0.988) with Langmuir model and value of Langmuir climax decolorization efficiency (Q₀) was found to be 142.68 and 435.72 mg/g for RhB and tartrazine, respectively. Kinetic analysis revealed that adsorption follows pseudo-second-order equation. The dye-loaded AC@CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposites were recycled by 0.1 M HCl or NaOH and regenerated AC@CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposites were used up to five rounds with better adsorption efficiency.

Comparison of treatability of four different chlorophenol-containing wastewater by pyrite-Fenton process combined with aerobic biodegradation: Role of sludge acclimation

Aerobic biodegradation combined with pyrite-Fenton process was used for the treatment of wastewater containing different chlorophenols (4-CP, 2,3-DCP, 2,4-DCP, 2,4,6-TCP). Fenton degradation using pyrite as the low cost iron catalyst was used as a pre-treatment step to lower the toxicity of CPs prior to aerobic biodegradation. Synthetic wastewater spiked directly with either 100 mg/L CPs or pyrite-Fenton pre-treated CPs was fed to the batch bioreactors inoculated with unacclimated or acclimated activated sludge using glucose as the C-source. The results show that the CP biodegradation under aerobic conditions was highly dependent on the type of CP treated. Except for 2,4-DCP, all other CPs investigated caused severe sludge toxicity, and thus significantly hindered glucose degradation by unacclimated sludge. The CP toxicity decreased in the order of: 2,4,6-TCP > 2,3-DCP > 4-CP > 2,4-DCP. The toxic effect was explained through an interaction of CPs with the lipid fraction of cell membrane. While the pyrite-Fenton pre-treatment improved the COD removal efficiency using unacclimated sludge, the sCOD removal efficiency was still less than the control reactor operated with no CP addition. With sludge acclimation, however, the sCOD removal efficiencies increased, and approached 74% for 2,4-DCP, 61% for 4-CP, 56% for 2,4,6-TCP and 46% for 2,3-DCP, suggesting an enhanced biomass tolerance to CP toxicity. On the other hand, the sludge acclimation combined with pyrite Fenton pre-treatment provided the best bioreactor performance for all CPs with the sCOD removal efficiencies reaching 81% for 2,4,6-TCP, 78% for 2,4-DCP, 73% for 4-CP and 62% for 2,3-DCP. This suggests that the dechlorination of CPs with Fenton process, in conjunction with sludge acclimation, not only reduced the sludge toxicity, but also enhanced the bioavailability of CP-containing wastewater for microorganisms, especially for highly chlorinated toxic CPs such as 2,4,6-TCP. Overall, the findings highlight the need for sludge acclimation for effective treatment of chlorophenol-containing wastewater by a combined pyrite-Fenton and aerobic biodegradation system.

Physico-chemical processes

By summarizing 187 relevant research articles published in 2019, the review is focused on the research progress of physicochemical processes for wastewater treatment. This review divides into two sections, physical processes and chemical processes. The physical processes section includes three sub-sections, that is, adsorption, granular filtration, and dissolved air flotation, whereas the chemical processes section has five sub-sections, that is, coagulation/flocculation, advanced oxidation processes, electrochemical, capacitive deionization, and ion exchange. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Totally 187 research articles on wastewater treatment have been reviewed and discussed. The review has two major sections with eight sub-topics.
