Enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting activity of carbon nanotubes@TiO2 nanoribbons in different electrolytes

Growth mechanism of 2D heterostructures of polypyrrole grown on TiO2 nanoribbons for high-performance supercapacitors

The patterning of functional structures is crucial in the field of materials science. Despite the enticing nature of two-dimensional surfaces, the task of directly modeling them with regular structures remains a significant challenge. Here we present a novel method to pattern a two-dimensional polymer in a controlled way assisted by chemical polymerization, which is confirmed through discernible observation. The fabrication process involves in situ polymerization to create 2D layers of polypyrrole (PPy) on extended 2D TiO2 nanoribbons, resulting in oriented arrays known as 2D PPy/TiO2. These arrays exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance, making them ideal for supercapacitor applications. The skeleton structure of this material is distinctive, characterized by a homogeneous distribution of layers containing various elements. Additionally, it possesses a large contact surface, which effectively reduces the distance for ion transport and electron transfer. The 2D PPy/TiO2 electrode has a maximum specific capacitance of 280 F g-1 at an applied current density of 0.5 A g-1. Moreover, it demonstrates excellent rate capability and cycling stability. Therefore, this approach will open an avenue for improving polymerization-based patterning toward recommended applications.

Visible-light enhanced tetracycline degradation via SnO2/TiO2-Ni@rGO ternary heterostructures

This study explores the synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic performance of a SnO2/TiO2-Ni@rGO nanocomposite for tetracycline (TC) degradation under visible light irradiation. The nanocomposite was precisely designed to enhance structural stability, charge transfer efficiency, and catalytic activity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the structural integrity of the SnO2/TiO2-Ni@rGO composite, demonstrating excellent reusability and resistance to photo-corrosion after multiple cycles. Photocatalytic experiments revealed that the SnO2/TiO2-Ni@rGO nanocomposite significantly outperformed individual SnO2/TiO2-Ni and rGO catalysts, achieving a remarkable 94.6% degradation of TC within 60 min. The degradation process followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with a rate constant (k) of 0.046 min-1. The Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism facilitated efficient separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers, generating reactive oxygen species such as superoxide (•O2 -) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals crucial for the oxidation of TC. Radical scavenger studies confirmed that superoxide and hydroxyl radicals were the primary active species. The SnO2/TiO2-Ni@rGO composite also exhibited excellent reusability, maintaining high catalytic performance over four consecutive cycles. These findings suggest that the SnO2/TiO2-Ni@rGO nanocomposite is a promising candidate for the efficient and sustainable photocatalytic degradation of persistent organic pollutants like TC, offering significant potential for environmental remediation applications.

Enhanced solar-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting using nanoflower Au/CuO/GaN hybrid photoanodes

Harnessing solar energy for large-scale hydrogen fuel (H2) production shows promise in addressing the energy crisis and ecological degradation. This study focuses on the development of GaN-based photoelectrodes for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, enabling environmentally friendly H2 production. Herein, a novel nanoflower Au/CuO/GaN hybrid structure was successfully synthesized using a combination of methods including successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR), RF/DC sputtering, and metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) techniques. Structural, morphological, and optical characteristics and elemental composition of the prepared samples were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, respectively. PEC and electrochemical impedance measurements were performed for all samples. The nanoflower Au/CuO/GaN hybrid structure exhibited the highest photocurrent density of ∼4 mA cm-2 at 1.5 V vs. RHE in a Na2SO4 electrolyte with recorded moles of H2 of about 3246 μmol h-1 cm-2. By combining these three materials in a unique structure, we achieved improved performance in the conversion of solar energy into chemical energy. The nanoflower structure provides a large surface area and promotes light absorption while the Au, CuO, and GaN components contribute to efficient charge separation and transfer. This study presents a promising strategy for advancing sustainable H2 production via efficient solar-driven water splitting.

Novel Ag3PO4/ZnWO4-modified graphite felt electrode for photoelectrocatalytic removal of harmful algae: Performance and mechanism

A novel Ag3PO4/ZnWO4-modified graphite felt electrode (AZW@GF) was prepared by drop coating method and applied to photoelectrocatalytic removal of harmful algae. Results showed that approximately 99.21% of chlorophyll a and 91.57% of Microcystin-LR (MCLR) were degraded by the AZW@GF-Pt photoelectrocatalytic system under the optimal operating conditions with a rate constant of 0.02617 min-1 and 0.01416 min-1, respectively. The calculated synergistic coefficient of photoelectrocatalytic algal removal and MC-LR degradation by the AZW@GF-Pt system was both larger than 1.9. In addition, the experiments of quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) revealed that the photoelectrocatalytic reaction mainly generated •OH and •O2- for algal removal and MC-LR degradation. Furthermore, the potential pathway for photoelectrocatalytic degradation of MC-LR was proposed. Finally, the photoelectrocatalytic cycle algae removal experiments were carried out on AZW@GF electrode, which was found to maintain the algae removal efficiency at about 91% after three cycles of use, indicating that the photoelectrocatalysis of AZW@GF electrode is an effective emergency algae removal technology.

Efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution activity of nanostructured Ag3PO4/MoS2 heterogeneous composite catalyst

Hydrogen (H2) generation by electrochemical water splitting is a key technique for sustainable energy applications. Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (MoS2) and silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) possess excellent electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties when they are combined together as a composite rather than individuals. Reports examining the HER activity by using Ag3PO4, especially, in combination with the 2D layered MoS2 are limited in literature. The weight fraction of MoS2 in Ag3PO4 is optimized for 1, 3, and 5 wt%. The Ag3PO4/1 wt % MoS2 combination exhibits enhanced HER activity with least overpotential of 235 mV among the other samples in the acidic medium. The synergistic effect of optimal nano-scale 2D layered MoS2 structure and Ag3PO4 is essential for creating higher electrochemical active surface area of 217 mF/cm2, and hence this leads to faster reaction kinetics in the HER. This work suggests the advantages of Ag3PO4/1 wt % MoS2 heterogeneous composite catalyst for electrochemical analysis and HER indicating lower resistivity and low Tafel slope value (179 mV/dec) among the prepared catalysts making it a promising candidate for its use in practical energy applications.

Untangling the Effect of Carbonaceous Materials on the Photoelectrochemical Performance of BaTaO2N

The water oxidation reaction is a rate-determining step in solar water splitting. The number of surviving photoexcited holes is one of the most influencing factors affecting the photoelectrochemical water oxidation efficiency of photocatalysts. The solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of BaTaO2N is still far below the benchmark efficiency set for practical applications, notwithstanding its potential as a 600 nm-class photocatalyst in solar water splitting. To improve its efficiency in photoelectrochemical water splitting, this study offers a straightforward route to develop photocatalytic materials based on the combination of BaTaO2N and carbonaceous materials with different dimensions. The impact of diverse carbonaceous materials, such as fullerene, g-C3N4, graphene, carbon nanohorns, and carbon nanotubes, on the photoelectrochemical behavior of BaTaO2N has been examined. Notably, the use of graphene and g-C3N4 remarkably improves the photoelectrochemical performance of the composite photocatalysts through a higher photocurrent and acting as electron reservoirs. Consequently, a marked reduction in recombination rates, even at low overpotentials, leads to a higher accumulation of photoexcited holes, resulting in 2.6- and 1.7-fold increased BaTaO2N photocurrent densities using graphene and g-C3N4, respectively. The observed trends in the dark for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) potential align with the increase in the photocurrent density, revealing a good correlation between opposite phenomena. Importantly, the enhancement observed implies an underlying accumulation phenomenon. The verification of this concept lies in the evidence provided by oxygen reduction and is in line with photoredox flux matching during photocatalysis. This research underscores the intricate interplay between carbonaceous materials and oxynitride photocatalysts, offering a strategic approach to enhancing various photocatalytic capabilities.

New insights into enhancement of bio-hydrogen production through encapsulated microalgae with alginate under visible light irradiation

The production of green hydrogen is a promising alternative to fossil fuels. The current study focuses on the design of microalgae as a catalyst in bioelectrochemical systems for the generation of biohydrogen. Furthermore, the abovementioned target could be achieved by optimizing different parameters, including strains of microalgae, different optical filters, and their shapes. Synechocystis sp. PAK13 (Ba9), Micractinium sp. YACCYB33 (R4), and Desmodesmus intermedius (Sh42) were used and designed as free cells and immobilized microalgae for evaluating their performance for hydrogen production. Alginate was applied for immobilization not only for protecting the immobilized microalgae from stress but also for inhibiting the agglomeration of microalgae and improving stability. The amount of studied immobilized microalgae was 0.01 g/5 ml algae-dissolved in 10 ml alginate gel at 28 °C, 12 h of light (light intensity 30.4 μmol m-2 s-1), and 12 h of darkness with continual aeration (air bump in every strain flask) at pH = 7.2 ± 0.2 in 0.05 %wuxal buffer which has 3.7 ionic strength. Different modalities, including FTIR, UV, and SEM, were performed for the description of selected microalgae. The surface morphology of Ba9 with alginate composite (immobilized Ba9) appeared as a stacked layer with high homogeneity, which facilitates hydrogen production from water. The conversion efficiencies of the immobilized microalgae were evaluated by incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE). Under optical filters, the optimum IPCE value was ∼ 7 % at 460 nm for immobilized Ba9. Also, its number of hydrogen moles was calculated to be 16.03 mmol h-1 cm-2 under optical filters. The electrochemical stability of immobilized Ba9 was evaluated through repetitive 100 cycles as a short-term stability test, and the curve of chrono-amperometry after 30 min in 0.05 %wuxal at a constant potential of 0.9 V for 30 min of all studied samples confirmed the high stability of all sample and the immobilized Ba9 has superior activity than others.

Flexible Electrode Based on PES/GO Mixed Matrix Woven Membrane for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Application

We introduced, for the first time, a membrane composed of nanostructured self-polyether sulphone (PES) filled with graphene oxide (GO) applied to photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. This membrane was fabricated through the phase inversion method. A variety of characteristics analysis of GO and its composite with PES including FTIR, XRD, SEM, and optical properties was studied. Its morphology was completely modified from macro voids for bare PES into uniform layers with a random distribution of GO structure which facilitated the movement of electrons between these layers for hydrogen production. The composite membrane photocathode brought a distinct photocurrent generation (5.7 mA/cm² at 1.6 V vs. RHE). The optimized GO ratio in the membrane was investigated to be PG2 (0.008 wt.% GO). The conversion efficiencies of PEC were assessed for this membrane. Its incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) was calculated to be 14.4% at λ = 390 nm beside the applied bias photon-to-current conversion efficiency (ABPE) that was estimated to be 7.1% at -0.4 V vs. RHE. The stability of the PG2 membrane after six cycles was attributed to high thermal and mechanical stability and excellent ionic conductivity. The number of hydrogen moles was calculated quantitively to be 0.7 mmol h^-1 cm^-2. Finally, we designed an effective cost membrane with high performance for hydrogen generation.

Photoelectrochemical Green Hydrogen Production Utilizing ZnO Nanostructured Photoelectrodes

One of the emerging and environmentally friendly technologies is the photoelectrochemical generation of green hydrogen; however, the cheap cost of production and the need for customizing photoelectrode properties are thought to be the main obstacles to the widespread adoption of this technology. The primary players in hydrogen production by photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, which is becoming more common on a worldwide basis, are solar renewable energy and widely available metal oxide based PEC electrodes. This study attempts to prepare nanoparticulate and nanorod-arrayed films to better understand how nanomorphology can impact structural, optical, and PEC hydrogen production efficiency, as well as electrode stability. Chemical bath deposition (CBD) and spray pyrolysis are used to create ZnO nanostructured photoelectrodes. Various characterization methods are used to investigate morphologies, structures, elemental analysis, and optical characteristics. The crystallite size of the wurtzite hexagonal nanorod arrayed film was 100.8 nm for the (002) orientation, while the crystallite size of nanoparticulate ZnO was 42.1 nm for the favored (101) orientation. The lowest dislocation values for (101) nanoparticulate orientation and (002) nanorod orientation are 5.6 × 10^-4 and 1.0 × 10^-4 dislocation/nm², respectively. By changing the surface morphology from nanoparticulate to hexagonal nanorod arrangement, the band gap is decreased to 2.99 eV. Under white and monochromatic light irradiation, the PEC generation of H₂ is investigated using the proposed photoelectrodes. The solar-to-hydrogen conversion rate of ZnO nanorod-arrayed electrodes was 3.72% and 3.12%, respectively, under 390 and 405 nm monochromatic light, which is higher than previously reported values for other ZnO nanostructures. The output H₂ generation rates for white light and 390 nm monochromatic illuminations were 28.43 and 26.11 mmol.h^-1cm^-2, respectively. The nanorod-arrayed photoelectrode retains 96.6% of its original photocurrent after 10 reusability cycles, compared to 87.4% for the nanoparticulate ZnO photoelectrode. The computation of conversion efficiencies, H₂ output rates, Tafel slope, and corrosion current, as well as the application of low-cost design methods for the photoelectrodes, show how the nanorod-arrayed morphology offers low-cost, high-quality PEC performance and durability.

The Influence of Electrode Thickness on the Structure and Water Splitting Performance of Iridium Oxide Nanostructured Films

For a safe environment, humanity should be oriented towards renewable energy technology. Water splitting (WS), utilizing a photoelectrode with suitable thickness, morphology, and conductivity, is essential for efficient hydrogen production. In this report, iridium oxide (IrO_x) films of high conductivity were spin-cast on glass substrates. FE-SEM showed that the films are of nanorod morphology and different thicknesses. UV-Vis spectra indicated that the absorption and reflectance of the films depend on their thickness. The optical band gap (E_g) was increased from 2.925 eV to 3.07 eV by varying the spin speed (SS) of the substrates in a range of 1.5 × 10³-4.5 × 10³ rpm. It was clear from the micro-Raman spectra that the films were amorphous. The E_g vibrational mode of Ir-O stretching was red-shifted from 563 cm^-1 (for the rutile IrO₂ single crystal) to 553 cm^-1. The IrO_x films were used to develop photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production catalysts in 0.5M of sodium sulfite heptahydrate Na₂SO₃·7H₂O (2-electrode system), which exhibits higher hydrogen evaluation (HE) reaction activity, which is proportional to the thickness and absorbance of the used IrO_x photocathode, as it showed an incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE%) of 7.069% at 390 nm and -1 V. Photocurrent density (Jph = 2.38 mA/cm² at -1 V vs. platinum) and PEC hydrogen generation rate (83.68 mmol/ h cm² at 1 V) are the best characteristics of the best electrode (the thickest and most absorbent IrO_x photocathode). At -1 V and 500 nm, the absorbed photon-to-current conversion efficiency (APCE%) was 7.84%. Electrode stability, thermodynamic factors, solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency (STH), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies (EISs) were also studied.

The Impact of Co Doping and Annealing Temperature on the Electrochemical Performance and Structural Characteristics of SnO2 Nanoparticulate Photoanodes

Obtaining H₂ energy from H₂O using the most abundant solar radiation is an outstanding approach to zero pollution. This work focuses on studying the effect of Co doping and calcination on the structure, morphology, and optical properties of spin-coated SnO₂ films as well as their photoelectrochemical (PEC) efficiency. The structures and morphologies of the films were investigated by XRD, AFM, and Raman spectra. The results confirmed the preparation of SnO₂ of the rutile phase, with crystallite sizes in the range of 18.4-29.2 nm. AFM showed the granular structure and smooth surfaces having limited roughness. UV-Vis spectroscopy showed that the absorption spectra depend on the calcination temperature and the Co content, and the films have optical bandgap (E_g) in the range of 3.67-3.93 eV. The prepared samples were applied for the PEC hydrogen generation after optimizing the sample doping ratio, using electrolyte (HCl, Na₂SO₄, NaOH), electrode reusability, applied temperature, and monochromatic illumination. Additionally, the electrode stability, thermodynamic parameters, conversion efficiency, number of hydrogen moles, and PEC impedance were evaluated and discussed, while the SnO₂ films were used as working electrodes and platinum sheet as an auxiliary or counter electrode (2-electrode system) and both were dipped in the electrolyte. The highest photocurrent (21.25 mA/cm²), number of hydrogen moles (20.4 mmol/h.cm²), incident photon-to-current change efficiency (6.892%@307 nm and +1 V), and the absorbed photon-to-current conversion efficiency (4.61% at ~500 nm and +1 V) were recorded for the 2.5% Co-doped SnO₂ photoanode that annealed at 673 K.

Design and Characterization of Zeolite/Serpentine Nanocomposite Photocatalyst for Solar Hydrogen Generation

In this work, a low-cost, high-yield hydrothermal treatment was used to produce nanozeolite (Zeo), nanoserpentine (Serp), and Zeo/Serp nanocomposites with weight ratios of 1:1 and 2:1. At 250 °C for six hours, the hydrothermal treatment was conducted. Various methods are used to explore the morphologies, structures, compositions, and optical characteristics of the generated nanostructures. The morphological study revealed structures made of nanofibers, nanorods, and hybrid nanofibril/nanorods. The structural study showed clinoptilolite monoclinic zeolite and antigorite monoclinic serpentine with traces of talcum mineral and carbonates. As a novel photoelectrochemical catalyst, the performance of the Zeo/Serp (2:1) composite was evaluated for solar hydrogen generation from water splitting relative to its constituents. At -1 V, the Zeo/Serp (2:1) composite produced a maximum current density of 8.44 mA/g versus 7.01, 6.74, and 6.6 mA/g for hydrothermally treated Zeo/Serp (1:1), Zeo, and Serp, respectively. The Zeo/Serp (2:1) photocatalysts had a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency (STH) of 6.5% and an estimated hydrogen output rate of 14.43 mmole/h.g. Consequently, the current research paved the way for low-cost photoelectrochemical catalytic material for efficient solar hydrogen production by water splitting.

Fabrication and Characterization of Nanostructured Rock Wool as a Novel Material for Efficient Water-Splitting Application

Rock wool (RW) nanostructures of various sizes and morphologies were prepared using a combination of ball-mill and hydrothermal techniques, followed by an annealing process. Different tools were used to explore the morphologies, structures, chemical compositions and optical characteristics of the samples. The effect of initial particle size on the characteristics and photoelectrochemical performance of RW samples generated hydrothermally was investigated. As the starting particle size of ball-milled natural RW rises, the crystallite size of hydrothermally formed samples drops from 70.1 to 31.7 nm. Starting with larger ball-milled particle sizes, the nanoparticles consolidate and seamlessly combine to form a continuous surface with scattered spherical nanopores. Water splitting was used to generate photoelectrochemical hydrogen using the samples as photocatalysts. The number of hydrogen moles and conversion efficiencies were determined using amperometry and voltammetry experiments. When the monochromatic wavelength of light was increased from 307 to 460 nm for the manufactured RW>0.3 photocatalyst, the photocurrent density values decreased from 0.25 to 0.20 mA/mg. At 307 nm and +1 V, the value of the incoming photon-to-current efficiency was ~9.77%. Due to the stimulation of the H+ ion rate under the temperature impact, the Jph value increased by a factor of 5 when the temperature rose from 40 to 75 °C. As a result of this research, for the first time, a low-cost photoelectrochemical catalytic material is highlighted for effective hydrogen production from water splitting.

Fabrication of TiO2/NiO p-n Nanocomposite for Enhancement Dye Photodegradation under Solar Radiation

A p-n nanocomposite based on TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) and NiO nanoparticles (NPs) was designed and optimized in this study to improve the photocatalytic performance of methylene blue (MB). The hydrothermal technique has been used to produce TiO2/NiO nanocomposites with different NiO NPs weight ratios; 1TiO2:1NiO, 1TiO2:2NiO, and 1TiO2:3NiO. The crystal phase, chemical composition, optical properties, and morphology of TiO2/NiO were explored by various techniques. TiO2 NTs have a monoclinic structure, while NiO NPs have a cubic structure, according to the structural study. The bandgap of TiO2 NTs was reduced from 3.54 eV to 2.69 eV after controlling the NiO NPs weight ratio. The TiO2/2NiO nanocomposite showed the best photodegradation efficiency. Within 45 min of solar light irradiation, the efficiency of MB dye degradation using TiO2/2NiO hits 99.5% versus 73% using pure TiO2 NTs. Furthermore, the catalytic photodegradation efficiency did not deteriorate significantly even after five reusability cycles, intimating the high stability of the TiO2/2NiO nanocomposite. This suggests that the loading of NiO NPs into TiO2 NTs lowers the recombination of photo-produced electron/hole pairs and enlarged solar spectral response range, which results in improved photocatalytic activity. The mechanism of charge transfer in the TiO2/NiO and kinetic models were discussed for the photodegradation of MB.

Design of SnO2:Ni,Ir Nanoparticulate Photoelectrodes for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Currently, hydrogen generation via photocatalytic water splitting using semiconductors is regarded as a simple environmental solution to energy challenges. This paper discusses the effects of the doping of noble metals, Ir (3.0 at.%) and Ni (1.5-4.5 at.%), on the structure, morphology, optical properties, and photoelectrochemical performance of sol-gel-produced SnO2 thin films. The incorporation of Ir and Ni influences the position of the peaks and the lattice characteristics of the tetragonal polycrystalline SnO2 films. The films have a homogeneous, compact, and crack-free nanoparticulate morphology. As the doping level is increased, the grain size shrinks, and the films have a high proclivity for forming Sn-OH bonds. The optical bandgap of the un-doped film is 3.5 eV, which fluctuates depending on the doping elements and their ratios to 2.7 eV for the 3.0% Ni-doped SnO2:Ir Photoelectrochemical (PEC) electrode. This electrode produces the highest photocurrent density (Jph = 46.38 mA/cm2) and PEC hydrogen production rate (52.22 mmol h-1cm-2 at -1V), with an Incident-Photon-to-Current Efficiency (IPCE% )of 17.43% at 307 nm. The applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of this electrode is 1.038% at -0.839 V, with an offset of 0.391% at 0 V and 307 nm. These are the highest reported values for SnO2-based PEC catalysts. The electrolyte type influences the Jph values of photoelectrodes in the order Jph(HCl) > Jph(NaOH) > Jph(Na2SO4). After 12 runs of reusability at -1 V, the optimized photoelectrode shows high stability and retains about 94.95% of its initial PEC performance, with a corrosion rate of 5.46 nm/year. This research provides a novel doping technique for the development of a highly active SnO2-based photoelectrocatalyst for solar light-driven hydrogen fuel generation.

Recycling Rusty Iron with Natural Zeolite Heulandite to Create a Unique Nanocatalyst for Green Hydrogen Production

Corrosion-induced iron rust causes severe danger, pollution, and economic problems. In this work, nanopowders of Fe2O3 and Fe2O3/zeolite are synthesized for the first time using rusted iron waste and natural zeolite heulandite by chemical precipitation. The chemical composition, nanomorphologies, structural parameters, and optical behaviors are investigated using different techniques. The Fe2O3/zeolite nanocomposite showed smaller sizes and greater light absorption capability in visible light than Fe2O3 nanopowder. The XRD pattern shows crystalline hematite (α-Fe2O3) with a rhombohedral structure. The crystallite sizes for the plane (104) of the Fe2O3 and Fe2O3/zeolite are 64.84 and 56.53 nm, respectively. The Fe2O3 and Fe2O3/zeolite have indirect bandgap values of 1.87 and 1.91 eV and direct bandgap values of 2.04 and 2.07 eV, respectively. Fe2O3 and Fe2O3/zeolite nanophotocatalysts are used for solar photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production. The Fe2O3/zeolite exhibits a PEC catalytic hydrogen production rate of 154.45 mmol/g.h @ 1 V in 0.9 M KOH solution, which is the highest value yet for Fe2O3-based photocatalysts. The photocurrent density of Fe2O3/zeolite is almost two times that of Fe2O3 catalyst, and the IPCE (incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency) reached ~27.34%@307 nm and 1 V. The electrochemical surface area (ECSA) values for Fe2O3 and Fe2O3/zeolite photocatalysts were 7.414 and 21.236 m2/g, respectively. The rate of hydrogen production for Fe2O3/zeolite was 154.44 mmol h-1/g. This nanophotocatalyst has a very low PEC corrosion rate of 7.6 pm/year; it can retain ~97% of its initial performance. Therefore, the present research can be applied industrially as a cost-effective technique to address two issues at once by producing solar hydrogen fuel and recycling the rusted iron wires.

A Review of Electrical Assisted Photocatalytic Technologies for the Treatment of Multi-Phase Pollutants

This article reviews the fundamental theories and reaction mechanisms of photocatalytic technologies with the assistance of electrical field for degrading multi-phase pollutants. Photo(electro)catalysis including photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) and photoelectrocatalytic oxidation (PECO) have been a potential technologies applied for the treatment of organic and inorganic compounds in the wastewaters and waste gases, which has been treated as a promising technique by using semiconductors as photo(electro)catalysts to convert light or electrical energy to chemical energy. Combining photocatalytic processes with electrical field is an option to effectively decompose organic and inorganic pollutants. Although photocatalytic oxidation techniques have been used to decompose multi-phase pollutants, developing efficient advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) by combining photocatalysis with electrical potential is urgently demanded in the future. This article reviews the most recent progress and the advances in the field of photocatalytic technologies combined with external electrical field, including the characterization of nano-sized photo(electro)catalysts, the degradation of multi-phase pollutants, and the development of electrical assisted photocatalytic technologies for the potential application on the treatment of organic and inorganic compounds in the wastewaters and waste gases. Innovative oxidation techniques regarding photo(electro)catalytic reactions with and without oxidants are included in this review article.

Anew Synthetic Polymers Based on Polyaniline for Dual-Functional Applications: Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting and Antibacterial Activities

Polysulfanilic acid has a low efficiency for the photoelectrochemical (PEC) production of H₂ from water splitting due to high recombination rate of charge and low electrical conductivity. Therefore, polyaniline was doped with polysulfanilic acid to form a copolymer and a blend to enhance its PEC heterogeneous catalytic performance. This was achieved through the improvement of visible light absorption and charge carriers' separation property. Herein, nine polymer samples of polysulfanilic acid were synthesized by oxidative polymerization. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the synthesized polymeric materials were investigated. Interestingly, these polymer samples had multifunctional applications regarding their hydrogen generation efficiency. Photoelectrodes of different compositions from pure and blended polymers were prepared and used for the PEC solar hydrogen production from water. Different PEC parameters including the oxidant role, monochromatic illumination wavelength, and electrode reusability were optimized toward the efficient hydrogen generation. Moreover, the PEC performance was evaluated using key indicators such as photocurrent density, conversion efficiency, and the number of hydrogen moles. The number of hydrogen moles was quantitatively estimated to be 140.4, 160.2, and 300 μmol/h·g at -1 V for the polymer, copolymer, and polymer blend, respectively, in the presence of APS + FeCl₃ as an oxidant. Further, other samples of polymers showed antimicrobial properties against different species of bacteria. Hence, the present study may provide a cost-effective method to produce solar hydrogen fuel from water.

Enhanced Patterned Cocatalyst TiO2/Fe2O3 Photoanodes for Water-Splitting

In this study, we used a hot-pressing process to enhance the photocatalytic properties of TiO₂/Fe₂O₃ bimetallic oxide with a periodic patterned structure on the surface to increase photon absorption for photocatalysis in the oxygen evolution reaction for water splitting. The hot-pressed samples show that combining the two metal oxides improves the absorption band edge of the electrode at different wavelengths. The patterned structure obtained using the hot-pressing process successfully improves photon absorption, resulting in a two-fold enhancement compared with a flat surface electrode.

Green synthesis of nano-silver-titanium nanotube array (Ag/TNA) composite for concurrent ibuprofen degradation and hydrogen generation

Silver deposited titanate nanotube array composite (Ag/TNA-c) was successfully synthesized using tea leaves and ground coffee as reducing agent for the first time. The synthesis method was effective, eco-friendly, and reproducible in producing quality nano-composite. The Ag/TNA composite was characterized via XPS, SEM, UV-vis, XRD, and electrochemical analyses for chemical and physical properties. Additionally, chlorogenic acid, caffeine, and catechin were selected as reducing agents for purpose of comparison. Results indicated that catechin and chlorogenic acid were the main reducing agents responsible for Ag⁺ reduction in tea leaves and ground coffee, respectively. The synthesized Ag/TNA-c exhibited the best photocatalytic (PC) performance in terms of photo-current response, EIS, Ibuprofen degradation, and hydrogen generation in a PEC system. Pairing with a Pt cathode, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) system using the synthesized Ag/TNA composite photo-anode, was capable of concurrent anodic oxidation of Ibuprofen and cathodic generation of hydrogen. Deposition of nano-Ag particles on TNA enhanced the concurrent oxidation and reduction reaction in the PEC system. Results of ESR analysis confirmed the role of hydroxyl radical on Ibuprofen degradation over Ag/TNA-c in the PEC system. Mechanism of Ag/TNA PEC system was proposed to illustrate the oxidation and reduction reaction.

Immobilization techniques of a photocatalyst into and onto a polymer membrane for photocatalytic activity

This article reviews the various techniques of immobilizing a photocatalyst into and onto the polymer membrane for pollutant removal and as a problem solver in handling suspended photocatalyst issues from the previous literature. A particular focus is given to the preparation of mixed matrix membranes and deposition techniques for photocatalytic degradation in applications for wastewater treatment. Advantages and disadvantages in this application are evaluated. Various operating conditions during the process are presented. About 90 recently published studies (2008–2020) are reviewed. From the literature, it was found that TiO₂ is the most favoured photocatalyst that is frequently used in photocatalytic water treatment. Dry–wet co-spinning and sputtering techniques emerged as the promising technique for immobilizing a uniformly distributed photocatalyst within the polymeric membrane, and exhibited excellence pollutant removal. In general, the technical applicability is the key factor in selecting the best photocatalyst immobilizing technique for water treatment. Finally, the scope of various techniques that have been reviewed may provide potential for future photocatalytic study.

Visible-light driven photodegradation on Ag nanoparticle-embedded fullerene (C60) heterostructural microcubes

Three-dimensional Ag(I)-fullerene hybrid microcrystal is fabricated by AgNO₃ assisted liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation, containing the abundant sp²-π-electron system. With a mild chemical reduction, it produces the massive Ag nanocluster/fullerene junctions, on which fullerene doubles role as the excellent electron acceptor and photon scavenger, enabling the Plasmon-driven catalytic reaction. Ag nanocluster employed alone could not perform this photocatalytic reaction, neither of fullerene (C₆₀) crystal. It implicates that Ag-fullerene interface is a key to drive catalytic process. Relative to conventional TiO₂ nanostructures, fullerene expands light absorption to most solar wavelength and possesses a tightened bandgap which intrinsically expedites the charge transfer and charge separation from coinage metals. Demonstrated by photodegradation of organic molecules, this Ag(I)-fullerene (C₆₀) composite, consisted of a plethora of electron donor-acceptor dyads renders an additional member to photocatalyst family, potentially implemented for photo-electron conversion, water remedy and beyond.

Influence of Temperature Reaction for the CdSe-TiO2 Nanotube Thin Film Formation via Chemical Bath Deposition in Improving the Photoelectrochemical Activity

In this present work, we report the deposition of cadmium selenide (CdSe) particles on titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanotube thin films, using the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method at low deposition temperatures ranging from 20 to 60 °C. The deposition temperature had an influence on the overall CdSe–TiO₂ nanotube thin film morphologies, chemical composition, phase transition, and optical properties, which, in turn, influenced the photoelectrochemical performance of the samples that were investigated. All samples showed the presence of CdSe particles in the TiO₂ nanotube thin film lattice structures with the cubic phase CdSe compound. The amount of CdSe loading on the TiO₂ nanotube thin films were increased and tended to form agglomerates as a function of deposition temperature. Interestingly, a significant enhancement in photocurrent density was observed for the CdSe–TiO₂ nanotube thin films deposited at 20 °C with a photocurrent density of 1.70 mA cm⁻², which was 17% higher than the bare TiO₂ nanotube thin films. This sample showed a clear surface morphology without any clogged nanotubes, leading to better ion diffusion, and, thus, an enhanced photocurrent density. Despite having the least CdSe loading on the TiO₂ nanotube thin films, the CdSe–TiO₂ nanotube thin films deposited at 20 °C showed the highest photocurrent density, which confirmed that a small amount of CdSe is enough to enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of the sample.

The structure and photoelectrochemical activity of Cr-doped PbS thin films grown by chemical bath deposition

Nanocrystalline undoped and Cr-doped PbS thin films were prepared on glass substrates by a simple chemical bath deposition method. The X-ray diffraction analyses of the films showed their polycrystalline nature with cubic structure and preferential growth along the (111) orientation. Cr incorporation decreases the average PbS crystallite size from 59.97 to 37.59 nm, whereas the strain and dislocation density showed an increasing trend. The atomic ratio of doping for Cr is about 0.63, 1.75, and 4.70% according to energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Morphological analysis showed that the average sizes of nanoclusters decreased from 73 to 41 nm as the Cr concentration increased. The optical band gap values are increased with increasing Cr doping. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) behaviors and the stability of the Cr doped PbS photoelectrodes were studied in 0.3 M Na₂SO₃ electrolyte solution. Also, the incident photon-to-current efficiency and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency are calculated and showed optimized values of 13.5% and 1.44% at 0.68 V and 390 nm. Moreover, the optimized electrode shows high chemical stability and a long lifetime. Finally, the effect of temperature on the PEC behaviors is evaluated and the different thermodynamic parameters are calculated.

980 nm NIR light driven overall water splitting over a combined CdS–RGO–NaYF4–Yb3+/Er3+ photocatalyst

Infrared light (NIR) accounts for more than 50% of the energy donated by the Sun to the Earth, but most of this type of energy is not utilized in photocatalytic reactions.
