Abstract
Rapid adsorption of surfactants onto a freshly formed interface is vital for emulsification because emulsification is a competitive process occurring between the very short time span of interface formation and surfactant mass transport. The biosurfactant surfactin has been previously reported to reach adsorption equilibrium at the hydrophobic/hydrophilic interface within hundreds of milliseconds and rapidly reduce the interfacial tension compared to chemically synthesized surfactants. According to a prior study, surfactin is expected to exhibit good performance in stabilizing micro-droplets of oil within the aging time scale of milliseconds. Herein, the stabilities of micro-droplets of n-hexadecane in the presence of a biosurfactant, surfactin (C15-SFT), and a chemically synthesized surfactant, sodium cetyl benzene sulfonate (8-SCBS), were investigated using a microfluidic method. The coalescence frequency of micro-droplets, the evolution of micro-droplet size, and the coalescence time of micro-droplets were evaluated. The results indicated that C15-SFT exhibited superiority over 8-SCBS in stabilizing the micro-droplets of n-hexadecane. Biosurfactant C15-SFT effectively reduced the fusion probability between oil droplets and elongated the coalescence time compared to 8-SCBS, and these phenomena were obvious at a shorter aging time (150 ms) and lower surfactant concentration (0.1 × critical micelle concentration). The stabilities of micro-droplets increased with aging time and the bulk concentration of surfactants. Stable micro-droplets of n-hexadecane were formed in 1 × 10-4 mol L-1 C15-SFT solution at 600 ms aging time, and the bulk concentration was 1 × 10-3 mol L-1 in the case of 8-SCBS. The micro-droplets rarely coalesced in the presence of 1 × 10-4 mol L-1 C15-SFT after 600 ms aging time, but the micro-droplets in 1 × 10-4 mol L-1 8-SCBS coalesced frequently in the midstream and downstream of the coalescence chamber, and big droplets were dominant in the emulsion. The coalescence time of micro-droplets stabilized by C15-SFT was obviously longer than that of those stabilized by 8-SCBS under the same condition, indicating that the interfacial film formed by C15-SFT has much strength to resist coalescence during collisions. This work is helpful for understanding the activity of lipopeptides in the very short early stage of the emulsification process, laying the foundation for biosurfactant research in the fields of enhanced oil recovery, bioremediation of contaminated water or soil, etc.

Abstract
Surfactin has many biological activities, such as inhibiting plant diseases, resisting bacteria, fungi, viruses, tumors, mycoplasma, anti-adhesion, etc. It has great application potential in agricultural biological control, clinical medical treatment, environmental treatment and other fields. However, the low yield has been the bottleneck of its popularization and application. It is very important to understand the synthesis route and control strategy of surfactin to improve its yield and purity. In this paper, based on the biosynthetic pathway and regulatory factors of surfactin, its biosynthesis regulation strategy was comprehensively summarized, involving enhancement of endogenous and exogenous precursor supply, modification of the synthesis pathway of lipid chain and peptide chain, improvement of secretion and efflux, and manipulation some global regulatory factors, such as Spo0A, AbrB, ComQXP, phrCSF, etc. to directly or indirectly stimulate surfactin synthesis. And the current production and separation and purification process of surfactin are briefly described. This review also provides a scientific reference for promoting surfactin production and its applications in various fields.

Abstract
Soil bacteria that produce biosurfactants can use total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) as a carbon source. This study demonstrated that biosurfactants produced by Burkholderia sp. enhanced the recovery and synergism of soil microbial community, resulting in fast degradation of macro alkanes. Experiments were carried out by applying bio-stimulation after pre-oxidation to investigate the effects of nutrient addition on biosurfactant production, TPH degradation, and microbial community succession in the soil. The results presented that bio-stimulation could produce biosurfactants in high C/N (32.6) and C/H (13.3) conversion after pre-oxidation and increased the total removal rate of TPH (10.59-46.71%). The number of total bacteria had a rapid increase trend (2.94-8.50 Log CFU/g soil). The degradation rates of macro alkanes showed a 4.0-fold (48.07 mg/kg·d-1 versus 186.48 mg/kg·d-1) increase, and the bioremediation time of degrading macro alkanes saved 166 days. Further characterization revealed that the biosurfactants produced by Burkholderia sp. could activate indigenous bacteria to degrade macro alkanes rapidly. A shift in phylum from Actinomycetes to Proteobacteria was observed during bioremediation. The average relative abundance of the microbial community increased from 36.24 to 64.96%, and the predominant genus tended to convert from Allorhizobium (8.57%) to Burkholderia (15.95%) and Bacillus (15.70%). The co-occurrence network and Pearson correlation analysis suggested that the synergism of microbial community was the main reason for the fast degradation of macro alkanes in petroleum-contaminated soils. Overall, this study indicated the potential of the biosurfactants to activate and enhance the recovery of indigenous bacteria after pre-oxidation, which was an effective method to remediate petroleum-contaminated soils.

Abstract
Surfactin has the potential to be used as a food preservative. However, efficiency and action mechanism in various applications need more assessments and research. In this study, the antifungal effects and the mechanism of action of surfactin on the fungus Botrytis cinerea were investigated. The effects of applying surfactin for the removal of gray mold on the quality of winter jujube were investigated based on the changes in fruit fatty acids. The results showed that (1) surfactin significantly inhibited the growth of B. cinerea, the EC50 at 5 d was 46.42 mg/L. (2) Surfactin significantly reduced the disease incidence and diameter of gray mold-inoculated winter jujube in a concentration-dependent manner. For that treated with surfactin at the EC50, the incidence decreased by 38.89%. (3) For B. cinerea under surfactin treatment, the mycelial morphology changed, the levels of total lipids and ergosterol decreased, the reactive oxygen species levels increased, and the cell integrity was completely damaged. (4) For winter jujube inoculated by B. cinerea, the contents of saturated fatty acids decreased and unsaturated fatty acids increased. For those under the surfactin treatments, winter jujube maintained the fatty acid composition at the level of non-inoculated groups. Mechanical injury significantly changed the fatty acid composition of winter jujube; however, surfactin not only was able to inhibit the growth of gray mold but also mitigated the adverse effects from mechanical injury. The present study demonstrated the potential applications of surfactin in the preservation of postharvest fruit quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surfactin produced by microbial fermentation has attracted increasing attention because of its low toxicity and excellent antibacterial activity. However, its application is greatly limited by high production costs and low yield. Therefore, it is important to produce surfactin efficiently while reducing the cost. In this study, B. subtilis strain YPS-32 was used as a fermentative strain for the production of surfactin, and the medium and culture conditions for the fermentation of B. subtilis YPS-32 for surfactin production were optimized. RESULTS First, Landy 1 medium was screened as the basal medium for surfactin production by B. subtilis strain YPS-32. Then, using single-factor optimization, the optimal carbon source for surfactin production by B. subtilis YPS-32 strain was determined to be molasses, nitrogen sources were glutamic acid and soybean meal, and inorganic salts were KCl, K2HPO4, MgSO4, and Fe2(SO4)3. Subsequently, using Plackett-Burman design, MgSO4, time (h) and temperature (°C) were identified as the main effect factors. Finally, Box-Behnken design were performed on the main effect factors to obtain optimal fermentation conditions: temperature of 42.9 °C, time of 42.8 h, MgSO4 = 0.4 g·L- 1. This modified Landy medium was predicted to be an optimal fermentation medium: molasses 20 g·L- 1, glutamic acid 15 g·L- 1, soybean meal 4.5 g·L- 1, KCl 0.375 g·L- 1, K2HPO4 0.5 g·L- 1, Fe2(SO4)3 1.725 mg·L- 1, MgSO4 0.4 g·L- 1. Using the modified Landy medium, the yield of surfactin reached 1.82 g·L- 1 at pH 5.0, 42.9 ℃, and 2% inoculum for 42.8 h, which was 2.27-fold higher than that of the Landy 1 medium in shake flask fermentation. Additionally, under these optimal process conditions, further fermentation was carried out at the 5 L fermenter level by foam reflux method, and at 42.8 h of fermentation, surfactin reached a maximum yield of 2.39 g·L- 1, which was 2.96-fold higher than that of the Landy 1 medium in 5 L fermenter. CONCLUSION In this study, the fermentation process of surfactin production by B. subtilis YPS-32 was improved by using a combination of single-factor tests and response surface methodology for test optimization, which laid the foundation for its industrial development and application.

Abstract
Heterosigma akashiwo blooms have caused severe damage to marine ecosystems, the aquaculture industry and human health worldwide. In this study, Bacillus tequilensis D8 isolated from an H. akashiwo bloom area was found to exert high algicidal activity via extracellular metabolite production. This activity remained stable after exposure to different temperatures and light intensities. Scanning electron microscopy observation and fluorescein diacetate staining indicated that the algicidal substances rapidly destroyed algal plasma membranes and decreased esterase activity. Significant decreases in the maximum photochemical quantum yield and relative electron transfer rate were observed, which indicated photosynthetic membrane destruction. Subsequently, the algicidal compounds were separated and purified by high-performance liquid chromatography and identified as three surfactin homologues by interpreting high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy data. Among these, surfactin-C13 and surfactin-C14 exhibited strong algicidal activity against three HAB-causing species, namely, H. akashiwo, Skeletonema costatum, and Prorocentrum donghaiense, with 24 h-LC50 values of 1.2-5.31 μg/ml. Surfactin-C15 showed strong algicidal activity against S. costatum and weak algicidal activity against H. akashiwo but little activity against P. donghaiense. The present study illuminates the algicidal characteristics and mechanisms of action of surfactins on H. akashiwo and their potential applicability in controlling harmful algal blooms.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions are colloidal systems with a wide spectrum of applications in several industrial fields. In this study, crude oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions were formulated using different dosages of the anionic sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) surfactant. The formulated nanoemulsions were characterized in terms of emulsion droplet size, zeta potential, and interfacial tension (IFT). Additionally, the rheological behavior, long-term stability, and on-demand breakdown of the nanoemulsions via a pH-responsive mechanism were evaluated. The obtained results revealed the formation of as low as 63.5 nm average droplet size with a narrow distribution (33–142 nm). Additionally, highly negative zeta potential (i.e., −62.2 mV) and reasonably low IFT (0.45 mN/m) were obtained at 4% SDBS. The flow-ability of the nanoemulsions was also investigated and the obtained results revealed an increase in the nanoemulsion viscosity with increasing the emulsifier content. Nonetheless, even at the highest SDBS dosage of 4%, the nanoemulsion viscosity at ambient conditions never exceeded 2.5 mPa·s. A significant reduction in viscosity was obtained with increasing the nanoemulsion temperature. The formulated nanoemulsions displayed extreme stability with no demulsification signs irrespective of the emulsifier dosage even after one-month shelf-life. Another interesting and, yet, surprising observation reported herein is the pH-induced demulsification despite SDBS not possessing a pH-responsive character. This behavior enabled the on-demand breakdown of the nanoemulsions by simply altering their pH via the addition of HCl or NaOH; a complete and quick oil separation can be achieved using this simple and cheap demulsification method. The obtained results reveal the potential utilization of the formulated nanoemulsions in oilfield-related applications such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR), well stimulation and remediation, well-bore cleaning, and formation fracturing.

Abstract
The growing interest in innovations regarding the treatment of oily wastewater stems from the fact that the oil industry is the largest polluter of the environment. The harm caused by this industry is seen in all countries. Companies that produce such wastewater are responsible for its treatment prior to disposal or recycling into their production processes. As oil emulsions are difficult to manage and require different types of treatment or even combined methods, a range of environmental technologies have been proposed for oil-contaminated effluents, such as gravity separation, flotation, flocculation, biological treatment, advanced oxidation processes, and membranes. Natural materials, such as biopolymers, constitute a novel, sustainable solution with considerable potential for oily effluent separation. The present review offers an overview of the treatment of oily wastewater, describing current trends and the latest applications. This review also points to further research needs and major concerns, especially with regards to sustainability, and discusses potential biotechnological applications.

Abstract
Biosurfactant has potential application value in the removal of microalgal blooms, but the ecological risks require more research. In this paper, the effects of surfactin on the toxic dinoflagellate Karlodinium veneficum were studied. The coaction of surfactin and K. veneficum was also evaluated through toxicological experiments on Artemia and juvenile clams. The results showed that: (1) in the concentration range of 0–10 mg/L, surfactin significantly killed algal cells in a dose-dependent manner within 48 h; the 24 h EC50 was 3.065 mg/L; (2) K. veneficum had the ability to restore population growth after stress reduction and the restored proliferation was positively correlated with the initial surfactin concentration; (3) the ability to restore population growth was associated with protection afforded by the promotion of antioxidant enzymes, including catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), whose increase was positively correlated with the surfactin concentration; (4) the toxicity of the coculture of surfactin and K. veneficum was significantly greater than that of the K. veneficum culture or surfactin alone and was dose and time dependent. The potential ecological risks should be considered when applying biosurfactants, such as surfactin, in the removal of harmful algal blooms.

Abstract
Surfactin is a bacterial lipopeptide and an influential biosurfactant mainly known for excellent surfactant ability. The amphiphilic nature of surfactin helps it to sustain under hydrophobic and hydrophilic conditions. In this investigation, a bacterium strain (BTKU3) that produces biosurfactant were isolated from oil-contaminated soil. Based on the blue agar plate (Bap) assay, the BTKU3 strain was found to be promising for biosurfactant production. This strain was later identified as a Lysinibacillus sp. by 16S rRNA sequencing. The characteristics of extracted bacterial surfactin were evidenced by FTIR with the presence of amine, C-H, CO, CC, esters, thiocarbonyl and asymmetric aliphatic C-H stretch molecular structural groups. Further, the extracted bacterial biosurfactant material was subjected to Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (LCMS), and it was identified and confirmed as surfactin with an elution time of 3.1 min and m/z value of 1034. The emulsification and oil displacement tests further proved the surfactin ability with 83% of coconut oil emulsion index and 80 % oil displacement ability with diesel, respectively. Lysinibacillus sp. BTKU3 strain also proved its efficacy in the degradation of difenoconazole by utilizing a capacity of 9.1 μg ml-1. Thus, it is inferred that the Lysinibacillus sp. BTKU3 strain plays a significant role in the production of surfactin, which positively acts as an antimicrobial agent and reduces contaminants in polluted sites.

Abstract
The effluent produced in refineries is in the form of an oil/water emulsion that must be treated. These emulsions are often stable and a suitable method must be used to separate the oil from the emulsion. Recently, biosurfactants or biodemulsifiers have received much attention to reduce the interfacial tension between two liquids. Biodemulsifiers are produced by microorganisms and have several benefits over chemical demulsifiers such as low-toxic, biodegradability, eco-friendly and easy synthesis. They can eliminate two phases by changing the interfacial forces between the water and oil molecules. Biosurfactants are categorized based on the molecular weight of their compounds (low or high molecular weight). Sophorolipids, lipopeptides rhamnolipids, trehalolipids, glycolipid, lipoproteins, lichenysin, surfactin, and polymeric biosurfactants are several types of biosurfactants, which are produced by bacteria or fungi. This review study provides a deep evaluation of biosurfactants in the demulsification process. To this end, different types of biosurfactants, the synthesis method of various biosurfactants using various microorganisms, features of biosurfactants, and the role of biodemulsifiers in the demulsification process are thoroughly discussed. Also, the impact of various efficient factors like pH, microorganism type, temperature, the oil content in the emulsion, and gravity on biodemulsificaion was studied. Finally, the mechanism of the demulsification process was discussed. According to previous studies, rhamnolipid biodemulsifier showed the highest biodemulsification efficiency (100%) in the removal of oil from an emulsion.

Abstract
A new iso-C14 [Val2, Val7] surfactin isoform (1) together with eight known ones (2-9), was isolated from the culture of a mushroom derived bacterium, Bacillus halotolerans DMG-7-2. The structures of them were mainly elucidated by NMR and MS data, and the NMR data of 5 also was reported for the first time. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by Marfey's analysis (for amino acid residues) and the 13C NMR calculation of the two plausible epimers of 1 (for fatty acid). Compounds 1-9 showed moderate cytotoxicity against two human cancer cell lines (A549, MCF-7) and mice microglial BV2 cells, the IC50 values ranged from 8.91 to 33.00 µM, and the IC50 values of the positive control 5-FU were 99.94, 71.49 and 0.12 µM, respectively.

Abstract
Nowadays, the worldwide search regarding renewable products from natural resources is increasing due to the toxicity of chemical counterparts. Biosurfactants are surface-active compounds that contain several physiological functions that are used in industries like food, pharmaceutical, petroleum and agriculture. Microbial lipopeptides have gained more attention among the researchers for their low toxicity, efficient action and good biodegradability when compared with other surfactants. Because of their versatile properties, lipopeptide compounds are utilized in the remediation of organic and inorganic pollutants. This review presented a depth evaluation of lipopeptide surfactants in the bioremediation process and their properties to maintain a sustainable environment. Lipopeptide can acts as a replacement to chemical surfactants only if they meet industrial-scale production and low-cost substrates. This review also demonstrated the production of a lipopeptide biosurfactant from a low-cost substrate and depicted plausible techniques to manage the substrate residues to determine its ability in the different applications particularly in the bioremediation process.

Abstract
Surfactin is a lipoheptapeptide produced by several Bacillus species and identified for the first time in 1969. At first, the biosynthesis of this remarkable biosurfactant was described in this review. The peptide moiety of the surfactin is synthesized using huge multienzymatic proteins called NonRibosomal Peptide Synthetases. This mechanism is responsible for the peptide biodiversity of the members of the surfactin family. In addition, on the fatty acid side, fifteen different isoforms (from C12 to C17) can be incorporated so increasing the number of the surfactin-like biomolecules. The review also highlights the last development in metabolic modeling and engineering and in synthetic biology to direct surfactin biosynthesis but also to generate novel derivatives. This large set of different biomolecules leads to a broad spectrum of physico-chemical properties and biological activities. The last parts of the review summarized the numerous studies related to the production processes optimization as well as the approaches developed to increase the surfactin productivity of Bacillus cells taking into account the different steps of its biosynthesis from gene transcription to surfactin degradation in the culture medium.

Abstract
A real crude oil-contaminated soil was treated using a two-step method: biosurfactant-assisted soil washing and the biostimulated biotreating of the effluent. The mixture of surfactin and rhamnolipid could enhance the TPH removal from an oil-contaminated soil (32 g/kg) in the soil washing operation. 86% of TPH was removed from the oil-contaminated soil in the soil washing operation under the mixed biosurfactant (surfactin + rhamnolipid) of 0.6 g/L, the soil/water ratio of 20 w/v%, the temperature of 30 °C, and the washing time of 24 h, leaving an effluent containing 5028 mg/L TPH. The effluent was efficiently biotreated in the bioprocess with 5 g/L acclimate biomass daily stimulated with 0.1 mM H2O2, and the concentrtion of TPH decreased to 26 mg/L within 17 d corresponding a TPH biodegradation over 99%. The biostimulation with H2O2 caused the production of a high amount of peroxidase that could accelerate the biodegradation of TPH. Accordingly, the findings suggest that the biosurfactant-assisted washing operation combined with the H2O2-stimulated biodegradation process could be an enhanced green method for efficient treatment of the heavy oil-contaminated soils.
