Production of activated carbons from four wastes via one-step activation and their applications in Pb2+ adsorption: Insight of ash content

Insight into the wheat residues-derived adsorbents for the remediation of organic and inorganic aquatic contaminants: A review

Wheat is a major grain crop of the world that provides a stable food for human consumption. Large amounts of by-products/waste materials are produced after the harvesting and processing of wheat crop. Such materials can cause an environmental issue if not disposed of properly. Several studies have shown that wheat residues can be efficient precursors for adsorbents because of their availability, renewability, lignocellulosic composition, and surface active groups enriched structure. In the literature, there are few review articles that address wheat residues-based adsorbents. However, these reviews were specific in terms of adsorbate or adsorbent and did not provide detailed information about the modification, properties, and regeneration of these adsorbents. This article extensively reviews the utilization of wheat biomass/waste including straw, bran, husk, and stalk as precursors for raw or untreated, chemically treated, carbonaceous, and composite adsorbents against various environmental pollutants. The influences of inlet pollutant amount, adsorbent dose, pH, temperature, and time on the performance of adsorbents against pollutants were considered. The maximum uptakes, equilibrium time, and adsorption nature were identified from isotherms, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies. The highest adsorbed amounts of most tested contaminants were 448.20, 322.58, and 578.13 mg/g for lead, chromium, and copper, 1374.6 and 1449.4 mg/g for methylene blue and malachite green, and 854.75, 179.21, and 107.77 mg/g for tetracycline, phosphate, and nitrate, respectively. For the studied adsorbate/adsorbent systems the adsorption mechanism and regeneration were also discussed. Significant results and future directions are finally presented.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Marry Sponge: New Opportunities for Advanced Water Treatment

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered attention across various fields due to their noteworthy features like high specific surface area, substantial porosity, and adjustable performance. In the realm of water treatment, MOFs exhibit great potential for eliminating pollutants such as organics, heavy metals, and oils. Nonetheless, the inherent powder characteristics of MOFs pose challenges in terms of recycling, pipeline blockage, and even secondary pollution in practical applications. Addressing these issues, the incorporation of MOFs into sponges proves to be an effective solution. Strategies like one-pot synthesis, in situ growth, and impregnation are commonly employed for loading MOFs onto sponges. This review comprehensively explores the synthesis strategies of MOFs and sponges, along with their applications in water treatment, aiming to contribute to the ongoing advancement of MOF materials.

Overview of environmental and economic viability of activated carbons derived from waste biomass for adsorptive water treatment applications

In adsorptive water treatment applications, the exploration of waste-derived activated carbon (AC) has gained substantial attention in scientific research. The use of waste materials as precursors for AC has gained attention due to its economic viability and potential to reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources. However, there is a lack of comprehensive literature regarding the costs and environmental impacts associated with the waste-based AC production and application. As sustainability practices gain importance, there has been an increase in research dedicated to estimating costs and conducting life cycle assessment (LCA) of AC production from waste sources. However, there is a need for thorough literature reviews that cover various methodologies and conclusions. The primary objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview and analysis of the economic and environmental factors related to the use of waste-derived AC in water treatment. LCA studies indicate that utilizing waste materials for AC production can lead to significant resource and energy savings compared to conventional methods relying on fossil resources. The cost of AC is influenced by factors such as precursor material cost, energy requirements during production (optimizable on an industrial scale), and properties of the resulting material. Additionally, the review emphasizes the significance of waste-based AC regeneration for sustainable viability. Evaluating the environmental and economic costs is crucial to support sustainability claims and avoid unsupported assertions. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the potential of waste-derived AC in water treatment and highlights the need for further research in this area.

Gamma-induced interconnected networks in microporous activated carbons from palm petiole under NaNO3 oxidizing environment towards high-performance electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs)

Activated carbons (ACs) were developed from palm petiole via a new eco-friendly method composed of highly diluted H2SO4 hydrothermal carbonization and low-concentration KOH-activating pyrolysis followed by gamma-induced surface modification under NaNO3 oxidizing environment. The prepared graphitic carbons were subsequently used as an active material for supercapacitor electrodes. The physiochemical properties of the ACs were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical performance of the fabricated electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Even treated with extremely low H2SO4 concentration and small KOH:hydrochar ratio, the maximum SBET of 1365 m2 g-1 for an AC was obtained after gamma irradiation. This was attributed to radiation-induced interconnected network formation generating micropores within the material structure. The supercapacitor electrodes exhibited electric double-layer capacitance giving the highest specific capacitance of 309 F g-1 as well as excellent cycle stability within 10,000 cycles. The promising results strongly ensure high possibility of the eco-friendly method application in supercapacitor material production.

The Influence of NH4NO3 and NH4ClO4 on Porous Structure Development of Activated Carbons Produced from Furfuryl Alcohol

The influence of NH₄NO₃ and NH₄ClO₄ on the porous texture and structure development of activated carbons produced from a non-porous polymeric precursor synthesized from furfuryl alcohol has been studied. The non-doped counterparts were prepared and studied for comparison purposes. NH₄NO₃ and NH₄ClO₄-doped polymers were carbonized under N₂ atmosphere at 600 °C, followed by CO₂ activation at 1000 °C and the obtained carbon materials and activated carbons were thoroughly characterized. The porosity characterization data have shown that NH₄NO₃-derived ACs present the highest specific surface area (up to 1523 m²/g in the experimental conditions studied), and the resulting porosity distributions are strongly dependent on the activation conditions. Thus, 1 h activation is optimum for the microporosity development, whereas larger activation times lead to micropores enlargement and conversion into mesopores. The type of doping salts used also has a substantial impact on the surface chemical composition, i.e., C=O groups. Moreover, NH₄NO₃ and NH₄ClO₄ constitute good sources of nitrogen. The type and contribution of nitrogen species are dependent on the preparation conditions. Quaternary nitrogen only appears in doped samples prepared by carbonization and pyrrolic, pyrydinic, and nitrogen oxide groups appear in the NH₄NO₃ -series. NH₄NO₃ incorporation has led to optimized materials towards CO₂ and C₂H₄ sorption with just 1 h activation time.

Enhanced Removal of Bordeaux B and Red G Dyes Used in Alpaca Wool Dying from Water Using Iron-Modified Activated Carbon

The aim of this research was to explore the removal of Red G and Bordeaux B dyes from water using a packed bed column with conventional carbon (C‐conv) and iron‐modified activated carbon (C–FeCl3). The bands increased in C–FeCl3, corresponding to groups already existing in C‐conv, such as C = C and C‐C, and the appearance of new groups, such as C‐O, C‐Cl, Fe‐Cl and Fe‐O. The total ash content (CT) was CT = (10.53 ± 0.12 and 8.98 ± 0.21)% for C‐conv and C–FeCl3, respectively. A molecular structure in the shape of a cross was noticed in Bordeaux B, which was less complex and smaller than the one in Red G. For fixed‐bed columns, the carbon fraction was (0.43 and 0.85) mm. The pH of the adsorbents was 8.55 for C‐conv and 4.14 for C–FeCl3. Breakthrough curves were obtained and the Thomas model (TM) and Yoon–Nelson model (YNM) were applied. The sorption capacity of Bordeaux B on C‐conv and C–FeCl3 was 𝑞TH: (237.88 and 216.21) mg/g, respectively, but the one of Red G was 𝑞TH: (338.46 and 329.42) mg/g. The dye removal (RT) was over 55%. 

A comprehensive review on the decontamination of lead(ii) from water and wastewater by low-cost biosorbents

The disadvantages of conventional methods in water and wastewater management including the demand for high energy consumption, the creation of secondary toxic sludge, and operation cost are much too high for developing countries. However, adsorption using low-cost biosorbents is the most efficient non-conventional technique for heavy metals removal. The high adsorption capacities, cost-effectiveness, and the abundance of agricultural waste materials in nature are the important parameters that explain why these biosorbents are economical for heavy metals removal. The present investigation sought to review the biosorption of lead [Pb(ii)] onto low-cost biosorbents to understand their adsorption mechanism. The review shows that biosorption using low-cost biosorbents is eco-friendly, cost-effective, and is a simple technique for water and wastewater treatment containing lead(ii) ions. The batch biosorption tests carried out in most studies show that Pb(ii) biosorption by the low-cost biosorbents is dependent on biosorption variables such as pH of the aqueous solution, contact time, biosorbent dose, Pb(ii) initial concentration, and temperature. Furthermore, batch equilibrium data have been explored in many studies by evaluating the kinetics, isothermal and thermodynamic variables. Most of the studies on the adsorptive removal of Pb(ii) were found to follow the pseudo-second kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models with the thermodynamics variables suggesting the feasibility and spontaneous nature of Pb(ii) sequestration. However, gaps exist to increase biosorption ability, economic feasibility, optimization of the biosorption system, and desorption and regeneration of the used agricultural biosorbents.

Adsorption of Pb(II) from Water onto ZnO, TiO2, and Al2O3: Process Study, Adsorption Behaviour, and Thermodynamics

This study is aimed at comparing the use of zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and aluminium oxide (Al2O3) for removing lead ions from water through adsorption. The point of zero charge was obtained for ZnO, TiO2, and Al2O3 and was found to be 7.3, 7.1, and 9.0, respectively. The effect of pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial concentrations, and temperature was investigated in batch experiments. The optimal conditions obtained were 7, 2 g/L, 120 mins, 100 ppm, and 41°C, respectively, where the optimal removal efficiencies were 98.43%, 96.45%, and 85.50% for ZnO, TiO2, and Al2O3, respectively. In addition, analyses of adsorption kinetics, mechanisms, isotherms, and thermodynamics were performed. The adsorption kinetics of Pb(II) were compared to popular models, and it was found that the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model best fitted the Pb(II) uptake for all adsorbents at correlation coefficient ( $R^2\ge 0.96$ ). The adsorption isotherms of Pb(II) were also compared to popular models, and it was found that the Pb(II) uptake by TiO2 and ZnO was well-described by the Langmuir model ( $R^2\ge 0.96$ ) with maximum adsorption capacities of 55.04 and 58.88 mg/g, respectively. On the other hand, the behaviour of Al2O3 is described more accurately by the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model ( $R^2=0.96$ ), and the maximum adsorption capacity was 53.64 mg/g. The isotherm analysis proved that the limiting step of the adsorption process is the film diffusion mechanism. In addition, studying the heat of adsorption of Pb(II) implied that the adsorption is endothermic due to the positive values of enthalpy ( $\Delta H^{°}\ge 30$ ) for all adsorbents. The absorbents were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to study the morphology of surfaces and the chemical characterization of the adsorbents to ensure that adsorption is achieved. ZnO showed better performance for the uptake of lead followed by TiO2 then Al2O3.

Investigations of Cr(VI) removal by millet bran biochar modified with inorganic compounds: Momentous role of additional lactate

In this study, millet bran biochars modified with inorganic compounds (H₃PO₄: P-BC, NaOH: Na-BC and K₂CO₃: K-BC) were prepared and applied for Cr(VI) removal to evaluate the effects of modification on biochars' physicochemical properties. The results showed that Cr(VI) reduction capacity complied with the order of Na-BC > BC > P-BC > K-BC, and reductive groups such as -OH and -NH₂ played considerable roles in electrons donating. Based on this, lactate was added for further investigation of electrons transferring. The results displayed that Cr(VI) removal of all biochars was enhanced tremendously and modified biochars exhibited better Cr(VI) reduction. This may be due to the bridging effect of lactate, which could not only chelate with Cr(VI) via -COOH (or -OH) but also form hydrogen bonds with oxygen or nitrogen containing groups on biochars through the other groups, thus facilitating electrons transferring between biochars and Cr(VI). This work provided an insight into evaluation of the influence of inorganic compounds modification on both electrons donating capability of biochars and electrons transferring potential of biochars combined with lactate in Cr(VI) removal.

High efficiency removal of heavy metals using tire-derived activated carbon vs commercial activated carbon: Insights into the adsorption mechanisms

In this study, activated carbon was derived from pulverized waste tires using carbonization and chemical activation techniques. Single and competitive batch adsorption experiments for the removal of three synthetic heavy metal ions (Pb^2+, Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺) from an aqueous solution were performed to benchmark the efficiency of the Tire-derived Activated Carbon (TAC) in comparison to that of commercial activated carbon (CAC), which was used as the reference material. The sorbents physicochemical properties with corresponding adsorption mechanisms were evaluated by different experimental techniques. TAC exhibited great potential to adsorb heavy metals, with monolayer adsorption capacities as high as 322.5, 185.2, and 71.9 mg g^-1 for Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺, respectively, which were significantly higher than the adsorption capacities exhibited by CAC, which were 42.5, 15.0, and 14.0 mg∙g^-1 for Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺, respectively. Competitive adsorption results demonstrated the adsorption ability of sorbents is restricted by presence of other ions, and was decreased compared to the single sorption. Sorption kinetics data, with better fit to the pseudo-second order kinetics model, revealed that TAC had faster sorption rate in comparison to CAC. The adsorption capacities of TAC and CAC were reduced to half of their initial capacities after three successive adsorption-desorption cycles. Zeta potential, FT-IR, and XPS analyses revealed that electrostatic attraction and surface complexation mechanisms, as two metal-adsorbing mechanisms, were more influential for TAC. For CAC, a higher cation exchange capacity (CEC) value indicated that the removal of heavy metals by ion exchange was the predominant mechanism.

Current State of Porous Carbon for Wastewater Treatment

Porous materials constitute an attractive research field due to their high specific surfaces; high chemical stabilities; abundant pores; special electrical, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties; and their often higher reactivities. These materials are currently generating a great deal of enthusiasm, and they have been used in large and diverse applications, such as those relating to sensors and biosensors, catalysis and biocatalysis, separation and purification techniques, acoustic and electrical insulation, transport gas or charged species, drug delivery, and electrochemistry. Porous carbons are an important class of porous materials that have grown rapidly in recent years. They have the advantages of a tunable pore structure, good physical and chemical stability, a variable specific surface, and the possibility of easy functionalization. This gives them new properties and allows them to improve their performance for a given application. This review paper intends to understand how porous carbons involve the removal of pollutants from water, e.g., heavy metal ions, dyes, and organic or inorganic molecules. First, a general overview description of the different precursors and the manufacturing methods of porous carbons is illustrated. The second part is devoted to reporting some applications such using porous carbon materials as an adsorbent. It appears that the use of porous materials at different scales for these applications is very promising for wastewater treatment industries.

Insight into activated carbon from different kinds of chemical activating agents: A review

Activated carbon (AC) is an important material in various fields owing to its low cost, well-developed porosity, and favorable chemical stability. Key factors for the optimal synthesis of AC are the carbon precursors, activation pathways, activating agents, and design of the procedure parameters. So far, no case studies have reviewed the activating agents used during the chemical activation process. Accordingly, the present review provides a summary of recent research, highlighting the development of activating agents during the process of AC. Detailed lists of pore-forming mechanisms by various activating agents, including alkaline, acidic, neutral, and self-activating agents, have been systematically summarized. Furthermore, the effects of activating agents on the experimental procedures have also been established. Finally, a comprehensive discussion about the influences of activating agents on the physical and chemical properties of the resultant AC is included. The objective of this study is to reveal and distinguish the individual roles of different activating agents during AC synthesis.

Plant celluloses, hemicelluloses, lignins, and volatile oils for the synthesis of nanoparticles and nanostructured materials

A huge variety of plants are harvested worldwide and their different constituents can be converted into a broad range of bionanomaterials. In parallel, much research effort in materials science and engineering is focused on the formation of nanoparticles and nanostructured materials originating from agricultural residues. Cellulose (40-50%), hemicellulose (20-40%), and lignin (20-30%) represent major plant ingredients and many techniques have been described that separate the main plant components for the synthesis of nanocelluloses, nano-hemicelluloses, and nanolignins with divergent and controllable properties. The minor components, such as essential oils, could also be used to produce non-toxic metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with high bioavailability, biocompatibility, and/or bioactivity. This review describes the chemical structure, the physical and chemical properties of plant cell constituents, different techniques for the synthesis of nanocelluloses, nanohemicelluloses, and nanolignins from various lignocellulose sources and agricultural residues, and the extraction of volatile oils from plants as well as their use in metal and metal oxide nanoparticle production and emulsion preparation. Furthermore, details about the formation of activated carbon nanomaterials by thermal treatment of lignocellulose materials, a few examples of mineral extraction from agriculture waste for nanoparticle fabrication, and the emerging applications of plant-based nanomaterials in different fields, such as biotechnology and medicine, environment protection, environmental remediation, or energy production and storage, are also included. This review also briefly discusses the recent developments and challenges of obtaining nanomaterials from plant residues, and the issues surrounding toxicity and regulation.
