Copper release from waste rocks in an abandoned mine (NE, Brazil) and its impacts on ecosystem environmental quality

The metal release and transformation mechanisms of V-Ti magnetite tailings: Role of the alternate flooding and drying cycles and organic acids

V-Ti magnetite tailings (VTMTs) contain various heavy metals, such as Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ni. The groundwater pollution caused by the tailing metal release has become a local environmental concern. Although studies have demonstrated the influence of alternate flooding and drying cycles (FDCs) on metal form and mobility in minerals, little was known about whether FDCs affect the metal release of VTMTs and the transformation of released metals. This study investigated the metal release kinetics of VTMTs and the metal transformation under FDCs in the absence and presence of acid rain (sulfuric and nitric acids) and bio-secreted organic acids (acetic, oxalic, and citric acids). The results showed that FDCs promoted metal release whether or not acids were present. The maximum released concentrations of V, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni were as high as 78.63 mg L-1,1.47 mg L-1, 67.96 μg L-1, 1.34 mg L-1, and 0.80 mg L-1, respectively, under FDCs and citric acids. FDCs enhanced the tailing metal release by increasing the metal labile fraction proportion. However, the concentrations of released Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ni all gradually decreased due to their (co-)precipitation. These precipitates conversely inhibited the subsequent mineral dissolution by covering the tailing surface. FDCs also enhanced the tailings' porosities by 2.94%-9.94%. The mineral dissolution, expansion and shrinkage, and changes in tension destroyed the tailing microstructure during FDCs. This study demonstrated the low metal pollution risk of VTMTs under FDCs, either in acid rain or bio-secreted organic acids. However, the increase in tailing porosity should be seriously considered as it would affect the tailing pond safety.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in soils of lignite mining area of Kutch district of Gujarat, India

Toxic element concentrations including As, Hg, Pb, Zn, Cr, Co, Cu, Cd, and Mn were assessed in lignite mining areas of the Kutch district of Gujarat. It was assessed mainly in land uses like reclaimed mine soil, core zone soil, roadside soil, and reference agricultural soil along the soil layer of different depths. Roadside soil has the highest concentration of mercury (5.36 mg/kg), arsenic (18.2 mg/kg), lead (34.5 mg/kg), and manganese (464 mg/kg). In comparison, the core zone soil has the highest concentration of zinc (93.4 mg/kg), chromium (52.3 mg/kg), cobalt (19.2 mg/kg), and cadmium (5.65 mg/kg), respectively. Numerous soil indices including contamination factor, geo-accumulation index, ecological risk factor (ERF), and ecological risk index (ERI) showed that the study area lies within the moderate contamination to very high contamination zone and moderately polluted to the unpolluted range. The (Eif) (Hg) for roadside soil and core zone soil indicated high potential ecological risk category, while reclaimed mine site indicated considerable potential ecological risk. The Eif (Cd) in all sites in the mining area (121-327) can be put under high potential ecological risk, and the rest of the metals (As, Pb, Zn, Co, Cu, Cr, and Mn) can be put under low ecological risk category. In the three sites (i.e., reclaimed mine site, roadside soil, and core zone soil), core zone soil of (10-20 cm) showed the highest ERI value of 660.48 (10-20 cm), indicating high ecological risk. Cd and Hg contribute to 48% and 38% of ERI value. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) suggested that the Cu and Mn were closely linked with each other and derived from similar origin and geo-chemical composition. The results of this study interpreted that the soil near the lignite mining area was contaminated with toxic elements. It is, therefore, recommended that the routine toxic element monitoring in the soil sample of the examined area should be done, and remediation action should be advised to prevent the accumulation of toxic elements in the soil and further into the food chain.

The leaching behavior of heavy metal from contaminated mining soil: The effect of rainfall conditions and the impact on surrounding agricultural lands

Contaminated mining soils could lead to heavy metal pollution of surrounding farmlands under rainfall conditions. With the aids of sequential extraction, batch leaching, and dynamic leaching experiments, this study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of heavy metals in contaminated mining soils, understand their leaching behavior under different rainfall conditions, and evaluate the potential effects on surrounding farmlands. The results indicated that the concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in the contaminated mining soils were several or even twenty times higher than their corresponding background values, and Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb had considerable proportions (>50 %) in mobile forms. The leaching amounts of heavy metals from the contaminated mining soils had positive correlation with their contents in acid soluble form, and showed strong dependence on rainfall pH conditions. Acid rainfalls (pH = 4.32) can greatly increase the average annual release of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb from mine soils in the study area, with increments ranging from 72.4 % (Pb) to 85.9 % (Cd) compared to those under alkaline conditions (pH = 7.42). The leaching of heavy metals was well fitted by two-constant, pseudo second-order and parabolic equations, indicating that their multi-layer sorption/desorption behavior on soil surface was dominated by chemical processes and their release was controlled by the diffusion within the soil pore channels. The two-column leaching experiment showed that the metal-rich leachate can lead to obvious increments of heavy metals in non-residual fractions (in particular Cd in acid soluble form) in surrounding farmlands, which would significantly raise the potential ecological risk associated with heavy metals. These findings indicate the importance of contaminated mining soils as a long-term source of heavy metals and the needs for mitigating the releases of toxic elements, especially in areas with heavy acid precipitation.

Copper and cadmium, isolated and in the mixture, impact the Neotropical freshwater Calanoida copepod Notodiaptomus iheringi: A short-term approach with environmental concentrations

Metal discharges in aquatic ecosystems are of concern since they affect different trophic levels, altering the functioning of the aquatic food chain. The metals can interact among them and with other pollutants, resulting in complex mixtures whose effects on biota are unpredictable. The impacts of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd), isolated and combined, on the freshwater copepod Notodiaptomus iheringi were assessed in acute and sub-chronic exposures. Species sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves were constructed for both metals. In the acute tests antagonism was observed in mortality, while in sub-chronic, mortality was not affected; however, the eggs produced and percentage of viable eggs were significantly altered. Our data suggest that egg production can be a detoxification route in N. iheringi under Cu and mixture exposure. From the SSD curves, N. iheringi was the most sensitive Brazilian species for Cu and the second most sensitive for Cd.

Assessment of heavy metals bioaccumulation in Silver Birch (Betula pendula Roth) from an AMD active, abandoned gold mine waste

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is generally outlined as one of the largest environmental concerns, characterized by very low pH value of mine waste, heavy metals and high sulphate content. This extremely hostile environment reduces plant ability to develop and grow. Present study focuses on a silver birch (Betula pendula Roth), a pioneer species that grows on an extremely hostile gold mine waste, to investigate the bioaccumulation of rare metals (thallium (Tl) and indium (In)), as well as nine other more common heavy metals (bismuth (Bi), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), silver (Ag) and zinc (Zn)), and to asses phytoextraction and phytostabilization potential of silver birch. Additionally, parameters determining AMD process and overall contamination (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), sulphates (SO42-), arsenic (As), iron (Fe), oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solids (TDS), acidity, hardness, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and radioactivity) were determined in mine waste and drainage water samples. To assess the heavy metals bioaccumulation and mine waste status, statistical geochemical indices were determined: bioaccumulation factor (BCF), pollution load index (PLI), geochemical abundance index (GAI) and exposure index (EI). The results show that silver birch bioaccumulates the essential elements Cu, Ni, Mn and Zn, and the nonessential elements Tl (average BCF = 24.99), In (average BC = 23.01) and Pb (average BCF = 0.84). Investigated mine waste was enriched by Bi, Ag and Cd according to positive values of GAI index. Present research provides a novel insight into bioaccumulation of nonessential heavy metals in silver birches who grow on the extremely hostile mine waste, and they exhibit significant phytoremediation potential.

The multi-media environmental behavior of heavy metals around tailings under the influence of precipitation

Precipitation can lead to significant leaching of heavy metals from abandoned tailings，resulting in a decline in the quality of the surrounding environment. This study aimed to simulate and quantify the migration patterns and fate of heavy metals in tailings caused by precipitation in various environmental media (tailings, air, water, soil, and sediments) using leaching tests, source apportionment, and a fugacity model. Results revealed that the average contents of Cd, Cu, As, Pb, Zn, and Cr in the un-weathered tailings were 3.43, 495.56, 160.70, 138.94, 536.57, and 69.52 mg/kg, respectively. The ecological risk factors in the tailings as well as in sediments and soils, were in the following order: Cd >Cu >As >Pb >Zn >Cr. A fugacity model based on the mass-balance methods was established, achieving a good agreement between simulation and measured values. The total amounts of Cd, Cu, As, Pb, and Zn leached from abandoned tailings over the 30-year evaluation period were estimated to be 1.09, 62.44, 0.16, 0.94, and 102.12 t, respectively. Soil and sediments are important reservoirs for heavy metals. The sum of the As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn storage capacities in the soil and sediment accounted for 77.28%, 75.63%, 73.94%, 69.39%, and 57.80% of the total storage capacity, respectively. This study could provide the means for the establishment of a targeted pollution control plan, a guide for restoration projects, and will aid in controlling pollution risk and improving the surrounding environment.

Application of the Aliivibrio fischeri bacterium bioassay for assessing single and mixture effects of antibiotics and copper

The Aliivibrio fischeri bioassay was successfully applied in order to evaluate the acute effect of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), ciprofloxacin (CIP), chlortetracycline (CTC) and copper (Cu), alone or in binary, ternary, and overall mixture. The toxicity results are reported in terms of both effective concentrations, which inhibited 50% of the bacterium bioluminescence (EC50%), and in Toxic Units (TUs). The TUs were compared with predicted values obtained using the Concentration Addition model (CA). Finally, the toxicity of water extracts from a soil contaminated by the three antibiotics (7 mg Kg-1 each) in the presence/absence of copper (30 mg Kg-1) was also evaluated. Copper was the most toxic chemical (EC50: 0.78 mg L-1), followed by CTC (EC50: 3.64 mg L-1), CIP (96 mg L-1) and SMX (196 mg L-1). Comparing the TU and CA values of the mixtures, additive effects were generally found. However, a synergic action was recorded in the case of the CIP+Cu co-presence and antagonistic effects in the case of CTC+Cu and the ternary mixture (containing each antibiotic at 0.7 mg L-1), were identified. Soil water extracts did not show any toxicity, demonstrating the buffering ability of the soil to immobilize these chemicals.

Molecular Identification and Acid Stress Response of an Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans Strain Isolated from Rio Tinto (Spain)

Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans is of paramount importance in the development of biomining technologies. Being widely recognized as an extreme acidophile, extensive research has been dedicated to understanding its significant role in the extraction of several ores in recent years. However, there still exist significant molecular uncertainties surrounding this species. This study focuses on developing a taxonomic assignment method based on the sequencing of the 16S-5S rRNA cluster, along with a qPCR-based technology enabling precise growth determination. Additionally, an approach to understanding its response to acid stress is explored through RT-PCR and MALDI-TOF analysis. Our findings indicate that when subjected to pH levels below 1, the cell inhibits central (carbon fixation and metabolism) and energy (sulfur metabolism) metabolism, as well as chaperone synthesis, suggesting a potential cellular collapse. Nevertheless, the secretion of ammonia is enhanced to raise the environmental pH, while fatty acid synthesis is upregulated to reinforce the cell membrane.

Assessment of trace metal bioaccumulation on the shells of edible gastropod Chicoreus ramosus and Hemifusus pugilinus

The current study aimed to examine how some gastropods absorbed trace metals (Chicoreus ramosus and Hemifusus pugilinus). The existence of 17 elements, including aluminium, arsenic, boron, calcium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, potassium, lithium, manganese, sodium, nickel, phosphorus, lead, and zinc (Al, As, B, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, and Zn), was confirmed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) analysis of trace metals. According to the ICP-MS results, C. ramosus (Al: 1.97 ± 0.2 µg/g, Fe: 1.93 ± 0.2 µg/g, and As: 1.52 ± 0.4 µg/g) and H. pugilinus (Al: 1.85 ± 0.7 µg/g, Fe: 1.68 ± 0.6 µg/g, and As: 1.37 ± 0.6 µg/g) both had significant amounts of aluminium, iron, and arsenic, respectively. Zinc concentrations of 0.58 to 0.7 μg/g (C. ramosus) and 0.67 to 0.2 μg/g were recorded (H. pugilinus). The elemental composition of the surface of the sample was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) micrographs, which also showed the degree of trace metal absorption in the chosen gastropod species.

Progress of Molecular Display Technology Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals

In the long history of microorganism use, yeasts have been developed as hosts for producing biologically active compounds or for conventional fermentation. Since the introduction of genetic engineering, recombinant proteins have been designed and produced using yeast or bacterial cells. Yeasts have the unique property of expressing genes derived from both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is one of the well-studied yeasts in genetic engineering. Recently, molecular display technology, which involves a protein-producing system on the yeast cell surface, has been established. Using this technology, designed proteins can be displayed on the cell surface, and novel abilities are endowed to the host yeast strain. This review summarizes various molecular yeast display technologies and their principles and applications. Moreover, S. cerevisiae laboratory strains generated using molecular display technology for sustainable development are described. Each application of a molecular displayed yeast cell is also associated with the corresponding Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

Environmentally relevant copper concentrations stimulate photosynthesis in Monoraphidium sp

Microalgae require copper (Cu) in trace levels for their growth and metabolism, it is a vital component of certain metalloproteins. Although this element has been widely studied concerning microalgae physiology, the effects of environmentally relevant levels have been less studied. We studied the photosynthesis and growth of the Chlorophyte Monoraphidium sp. exposed to Cu ranging from low (1.7 nM) to high (589.0 nM) free Cu ions (Cu²⁺) concentrations. The growth rate was unaffected by Cu concentrations in the range of 1.7-7.4 nM Cu²⁺, but decreased beyond it. The relative maximum electron transport rate (rETR_m), saturation irradiance (E_k), photochemical quenching (qP and qL), and PSII operating efficiency [Formula: see text] were stimulated in the 3.4-7.4 nM Cu²⁺ range, concentrations slightly higher than the control, whereas non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) gradually increased with increasing Cu²⁺. The photosystem II antenna size [Sigma (II)₄₄₀] increased under high Cu (589.0 nM), which resulted in a decrease in the quinone A (Q_A) reduction time (tau). In contrast, the Q_A re-oxidation time was unaffected by Cu exposure. These findings show that a slight increase in Cu stimulated photosynthesis in Monoraphidium sp., whereas high Cu reduced photosynthesis and increased the dissipation of captured light energy. This research is a contribution to the understanding of the dynamic photo-physiological responses of Monoraphidium sp. to Cu ions.

Chronic toxicity, bioavailability and bioaccumulation of Zn, Cu and Pb in Lactuca sativa exposed to waste from an abandoned gold mine

Abandoned mines with untreated waste cause environmental pollution. The complex mixture of mining waste includes high metal content, anthropogenic chemicals and sterile rocks. Adverse effects of contaminated soils have been widely assessed by the use of plants. The aim of this study was to assess the chronic toxicity of a contaminated soil by waste from an abandoned gold mine on Lactuca sativa and its relationship with the bioavailability and bioaccumulation of Zn, Cu and Pb. Soil samples were taken from the site of mining waste stacking and a reference site in La Planta (Argentina). Contamination indices were calculated and acute and chronic exposures on L. sativa were carried out. Phytotoxicity indices, morphological and biochemical parameters, and concentrations of Zn, Cu and Pb in pseudo total and bioavailable soil fractions and in plant tissue were determined. Concentration- and time-dependent toxicity effects were observed, especially on plant width, fresh aerial biomass, leaf area and percentage of plants with completely necrotic aerial biomass. High levels of Zn (1453.3 ± 220.3 μg g-1) were found in plant tissue compared to Pb (277.2 ± 18.0 μg g-1) and Cu (255.3 ± 25.6 μg g-1). Toxicological endpoints correlated with metal uptake and mining waste concentration. In addition, bioaccumulation factors correlated with mobilisable and water soluble fractions. The concentration of Pb in aerial biomass surpassed the permissible concentrations in leaf vegetables, even at the reference site, indicating that lettuce crop consumption could be risky for the local population's health. This study demonstrated a strong relationship between metal bioavailability, toxicity endpoints and bioaccumulation, contributing with novel information to future ecotoxicological risk assessments and remediation plans.

The behavior of heavy metal release from sulfide waste rock under microbial action and different environmental factors

The dissolution of heavy metals from the waste rock is controlled by many factors. Herein, we investigated the release behavior of iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) from sulfide waste rock under the actions of microorganisms and different environmental factors (solution pH value, particle size of waste rock, temperature, Fe³⁺ concentration). The release quantity of heavy metals was negatively correlated with pH and particle size and positively correlated with ambient temperature and Fe³⁺ concentration. Under the experimental conditions of pH value of 3.0, temperature of 35°C, and waste stone particle size of less than 0.075 mm,, the release quantity of Fe, Cr, Cu, and Zn reached 3680, 18.32, 132.20, 26.60 mg·kg^-1 after 20 days of leaching, respectively. Rising the temperature to 45 °C, Fe, Cr, Cu, and Zn release quantities increased to 89.30, 5.81, 105.08, and 28.00 mg·kg^-1. Six hundred milligrams per liter Fe³⁺ increased the release of heavy metals considerably (2.63-65.48 folds). The presence of microorganisms can significantly facilitate the release of heavy metals. Compared to the control group, the release quantities of Fe, Cr, Cu, and Zn increased 4.29, 3.17, 1.54, and 2.39 times, respectively. In addition, the waste rock under microbial action was more seriously corroded than that under chemical factors. The release behavior of these four heavy metals was consistent with the interfacial chemical reaction control model, indicating that the reactions mainly occurred on the surface of the waste rock. This study provides an essential reference for the study of heavy metal leaching behavior.

Microplastics and copper induce apoptosis, alter neurocircuits, and cause behavioral changes in zebrafish (Danio rerio) brain

The knowledge regarding the neurological and behavioral toxic effects associated with microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals exposure is still scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential chronic (30 days) toxic effects of MPs (2 mg/L) and copper (Cu, 25 µg/L), alone or combined, in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) brain antioxidant system, cell proliferation/death, cholinergic-, serotonergic- and dopaminergic pathways and, consequently, in locomotor, anxiety, and social behaviors. Our findings showed that MPs and Cu exposure modulated the antioxidant system of zebrafish brain, with superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase (GR) having higher activity in the Cu25 +MPs group, but glutathione peroxidase (GPx) being inhibited in MPs, Cu25 and Cu25 +MPs. Moreover, an increase in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was observed in all exposed groups. When considering neurogenesis genes, a downregulation of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (pcna) was noticed in zebrafish exposed to the mixture treatment, while for dopaminergic system-related genes (th and slc6a3) an upregulation was observed in MPs, Cu25 and Cu25 +MPs groups. An increase in apoptosis-related genes expression (casp8, casp9 and casp3) was observed in the MPs exposed group. Changes in zebrafish behavior, particularly in mean speed, total distance moved, inactivity in the aquaria, and social/shoaling behavior was also observed in the MPs and Cu exposed groups. Overall, our results highlight the multiplicity of toxic effects of MPs, alone or combined with Cu, in zebrafish brain, namely apoptosis and alterations in adult neurogenesis, neurocircuits and, consequently, behavior.

Oxidative stress, apoptosis and serotonergic system changes in zebrafish (Danio rerio) gills after long-term exposure to microplastics and copper

Fish gills are in direct contact with the surrounding pollutants, and thus, potentially more vulnerable to microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals. The present study aimed to evaluate the long-term exposure effects of MPs and copper (Cu) in the gills of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). To this end, zebrafish were exposed to MPs (2 mg/L), Cu (Cu25, 25 μg/L) and their mixture (Cu25 + MPs) for 30 days, and then oxidative stress, detoxification, antioxidant, metabolic and neurotoxicity enzymes/genes, as well serotonergic system and apoptosis genes, were evaluated in gills. In the mixture group, ROS levels were increased, while CAT and GPx activities were inhibited, indicating the induction of oxidative stress in zebrafish gills. This was followed by an increase of LPO levels and potential oxidative damage in zebrafish gills. The tryptophan hydroxylase 1a (tph1a) and caspase-3 (casp3) genes were significantly upregulated in Cu25 + MPs group, indicating a potential dysregulation of serotonin synthesis and apoptosis pathways, respectively. Overall, the present study contributes to improving the knowledge about the response of aquatic organisms to MPs and the potential ecological risk that these particles represent to the ecosystems.

Response of Cajanus cajan to excess copper in the soil: tolerance and biomass production

Soil contamination by excess heavy metals or trace elements is a global concern, as these elements are highly bioaccumulated in living organisms, migrating throughout the food chain, and causing health problems. Sustainable technologies, using plants, have been increasingly studied and used to contain, reduce, or extract these elements from the soil. In this sense, it is essential to identify plant species that tolerate certain elements, present high biomass production and are resistant to adverse soil conditions. For this reason, we evaluated the biomass production and tolerance of Cajanus cajan in response to different concentrations of copper (30, 60, 120, and 240 mg/dm³, in addition to the control treatment) in the soil, as well as the effect of this metal on photosynthetic pigments and gas exchange. C. cajan was sown in soil previously contaminated with copper sulfate and cultivated in a greenhouse for 60 days after emergence. C. cajan is copper tolerant, approximately 88% copper is accumulated in the roots and therefore there is low copper translocation to the shoot, consequently, the chlorophyll content, the net photosynthesis rate, carbon assimilation, dry biomass, the root system development, and nodulation were not affected by copper. C. cajan can be explored in strategies to improve soil conditions and is a promising species in soil phytoremediation studies.

Temporal and spatial changes of biodiversity in Caverns of Heaven and Places of Blessing, Zhejiang Province, China from 1990 to 2020

Caverns of Heaven and Places of Blessing (CHPB) are the earliest Ecological Reserve in China, but in recent years, due to the accelerated process of urbanization and weak protection, the Chinese traditional ecological reserve represented by CHPB has been damaged to a certain extent. How to accurately measure the dynamic changes of ecological value in existing ecological protection and construct is an initial topic of CHPB protection. To understand the temporal and spatial changes characteristics of biodiversity in CHPB, this paper selects three-time nodes in 1990, 2005, and 2020, and takes CHPB in Zhejiang Province as an example, comprehensive three influencing factors: habitat quality, landscape pattern, and nighttime-light. To provide a relevant theoretical basis for the protection of CHPB, this paper quantitatively analyzes the changes of ecological environment and biodiversity in recent 30 years. The results showed that from 1990 to 2020, the biodiversity of CHPB in Zhejiang Province showed a positive change, the decline in Caverns of Heaven overall area slowed down, and the core area rebounded. The spatial distribution change of biodiversity is highly consistent with the land-use changes. The low value regions of biodiversity are mainly concentrated in the regions with intensive human activities, and the area decreases with the expansion of construction land. The core areas are primary areas with high biodiversity and overlap with nature reserves, natural parks, Scenic and Historic Interest Area, and other protected areas. In a word, CHPB still plays a vital role in ecological and environmental protection. In the future development, we should still pay attention to its biodiversity protection, and give full play to its role in ecological and environmental protection, and realize the contemporary application of CHPB’s traditional ecological knowledge.

Toxicity of microplastics and copper, alone or combined, in blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo) larvae

Plastics pose serious risks for fish productivity and a potential constraint for food security. Newly hatched blackspot seabream larvae were exposed to microplastics (MPs), copper (Cu, 10-810 µg/L) and their mixtures (Cu+MPs), during 3 and 9 days. Biochemical biomarkers and the expression of antioxidant and neurotoxicity-related genes were evaluated. In the 3-day exposure, catalase and glutathione-S-transferase activities decreased in MPs, Cu and Cu+MPs groups, followed by an increase of lipid peroxidation in the Cu270 and Cu270 +MPs exposed larvae. In the 9-day exposure, ROS levels increased in MPs and Cu30 groups, but no significant oxidative damage was observed, suggesting that the antioxidant system overcome the induced oxidative stress. However, the acetylcholinesterase transcript was downregulated in MPs, Cu and Cu10+MPs groups, indicating that MPs effects in cholinergic neurotransmission may arise after longer exposures. Overall, MPs and Cu can reduce survival, induce oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, neurotoxicity, and impact negatively fish larvae fitness.

Impact of Old Pb Mining and Metallurgical Production in Soils from the Linares Mining District (Spain)

Mineral processing and metallurgy production centers may leave a far-reaching fingerprint of soil contamination. This scenario is particularly relevant in the mining district of Linares (Southern Spain), where former industrial sites are now dedicated to other land uses. Within this context, we selected five sectors of concern in Linares region, which are currently used as agricultural and residential areas. The study began with an edaphic characterization, including grain-size fractioning and soil chemical analyses, which were complemented by mineralogical and sequential extraction information. Anomalous soil concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were found, with higher values than the admissible regional guideline limits. Moreover, chemical speciation indicated that in general, Pb, Zn, and Cd were highly available and bound mainly to the carbonate fraction. In addition, health risk assessment evidenced potential threats by Pb and As. Regarding remediation approaches, we observed that, in soils affected by mining and ore dressing activities, the clay and silt size fractions contained the highest pollution load, making them suitable for a size classification treatment. By contrast, in areas affected by metallurgical activity, pollutants were prone to be evenly distributed among all grain sizes, thereby complicating the implementation of such remediation strategies.

Cu Dynamics in the Rhizosphere of Native Tropical Species: Assessing the Potential for Phytostabilization in Mining-Impacted Soils

The use of native plants for reforestation and/or remediation in areas contaminated by mining is a technique with low implantation and maintenance costs. The success of this practice depends on the plant species and geochemical processes at the soil–plant interface (e.g., rhizosphere). This study evaluated the potential of spontaneous species for mobilizing and altering mineral and metal dynamics in the rhizosphere of Cu-rich soils resulting from the abandoned Pedra Verde mine in NE Brazil. Rhizosphere and bulk soil samples were collected from five shrubby/arboreal species. The pH, organic matter content, Cu fractionation, mineralogical characterization, and Cu content in the leaves and roots of all studied species were determined. In addition, the bioaccumulation factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) were used to evaluate the potential of these species for Cu hyperaccumulation. The Cu concentration in leaf plant tissues varied from 18 to 34 mg kg−1, and all plants presented TF and BCF < 1, indicating that the species were not Cu hyperaccumulators. However, the root exudates induce mineral dissolution, indicating potential Cu accumulation in the roots (from 36 to 249 mg kg−1). Combretum aff. pisoniodes Taub was the species with the greatest potential for decreasing Cu bioavailability and phytostabilization. Our findings indicate the potential of native Brazilian plants for growth in Cu-contaminated soil. These findings may be used for reforestation programs.

Impact of copper mining wastes in the Amazon: Properties and risks to environment and human health

Improper disposal of copper mining wastes can threaten the ecosystem and human health due to the high levels of potentially toxic elements released into the environment. The objective of this study was to determine the properties of Cu mining wastes generated in the eastern Amazon and their potential risks to environment and human health. Samples of forest soil and artisanal/industrial Cu mining wastes were collected and subjected to characterization of properties and pseudo-total concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn, in addition to chemical fractionation of Cu. The pH ranged from near neutrality to alkaline. Pseudo-total concentrations of Cu were high in all wastes, mainly in the artisanal rock waste, with 19,034 mg kg^-1, of which 61% is concentrated in the most reactive fractions. Pollution indices indicated that the wastes are highly contaminated by Cu and moderately contaminated by Cr and Ni. However, only the artisanal rock waste is associated with environmental risk. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic human health risks were detected, especially from exposure to Cr in the artisanal rock waste. Prevention actions and monitoring of the artisanal mining area are necessary to avoid impacts to the local population.

Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives of Bioleaching for Recovering Heavy Metals from Mine Tailings

The accumulation of mine tailings on Earth is a serious environmental challenge. The importance for the recovery of heavy metals, together with the economic benefits of precious and base metals, is a strong incentive to develop sustainable methods to recover metals from tailings. Currently, researchers are attempting to improve the efficiency of metal recovery from tailings using bioleaching, a more sustainable method compared to traditional methods. In this work, the research status of using biological leaching technologies to recover heavy metals from tailings was reviewed. Furthermore, CiteSpace 5.7.R2 was used to visually analyze the keywords of relevant studies on biological leaching of tailings to intuitively establish the current research hotspots. We found that current research has made recent progress on influencing factors and microbial genetic data, and innovations have also been made regarding the improvement of the rate of metal leaching by biological leaching combined with other technologies. This is of great significance for the development of bioleaching technologies and industrial production of heavy metals in tailings. Finally, challenges and opportunities for bioleaching provide directions for further research by the scientific community.

Role of temperature, wind, and precipitation in heavy metal contamination at copper mines: a review

The increasing demand for minerals pressurizing the mining authorities to extract low-grade ore results in more mining waste and degradation of the environment. The main aim of review was to understand the role of climatic factors (temperature, wind, and precipitation) in dispersal and mobility of heavy metals in soil, water, and vegetation in Cu mining region. The major source of contamination in the mining sector is tailings, overburden rocks, and abandoned mines. The contaminates or fine particles of sulfide-rich mining waste follow two major pathways for the dispersal: aerial and leaching. Sulfides on exposure to oxygen and water generate acid mine drainage which results in leaching of heavy metals. The pit water of abandoned mines is also a cause of concern which contaminates the groundwater resources. Climatic factors such as temperature, precipitation, and wind significantly influence the paths of contaminate dispersal. In arid/semi-arid regions, high temperature forms fine-grained efflorescence salts on tailings or exposed surficial mines which are carried away by strong winds/water and contaminates the surroundings. In wet regions, the leaching of heavy metals from both tailings and overburden rocks sulfides results in environmental contamination. The application of impermeable layers is highly recommended. The climatic factors (temperature, wind, and precipitation) significantly control the dispersal and mobility of heavy metals in Cu mining region. The implementation of waste management policies and pollution control technologies is recommended after considering the climatic factors.
