Water-level fluctuation enhances sediment and trace metal mobility in lake littoral

Migration of natural organic matter and Pseudomonas fluorescens-associated polystyrene on natural substrates in aquatic environments

This study investigated the migration behavior of microplastics (MPs) covered with natural organic matter (NOM) and biofilm on three substrates (silica, Pseudomonas fluorescent and Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms) in various ionic strengths, focusing on the alterations in surface properties based on surface energy theory that affected their deposition and release processes. Peptone and Pseudomonas fluorescens were employed to generate NOM-attached and biofilm-coated polystyrene (PS) (NOM-PS and Bio-PS). NOM-PS and Bio-PS both exhibited different surface properties, as increased roughness and particle sizes, more hydrophilic surfaces and altered zeta potentials which increased with ionic strength. Although the deposition of NOM-PS on biofilms were enhanced by higher ionic strengths and the addition of Ca2+, while Bio-PS deposited less on biofilms and more on the silica surface. Both types exhibited diffusion-driven adsorption on the silica surface, with Bio-PS also engaging in synergistic and competitive interactions on biofilm surfaces. Release tests revealed that NOM-PS and Bio-PS were prone to release from silica than from biofilms. The Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory furtherly demonstrated that mid-range electrostatic (EL) repulsion had significantly impacts on NOM-PS deposition, and structural properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and substrate could affect Bio-PS migration.

The influence of climate changes on heavy metals accumulation in Alosa immaculata from the Danube River Basin

This research report provides a comprehensive overview of the historical trends in heavy metal concentrations in the Pontic shad (Alosa immaculata) populations from both the Danube River and the Black Sea, while also exploring the potential influence of global warming on metal accumulation. Through bibliometric modeling analysis, it reveals significant limitations in existing international research, particularly the lack of comprehensive data on the impact of hydroclimatic changes on heavy metal accumulation in Alosa immaculata. Recognizing the critical importance of studies on heavy metal bioaccumulation in Danube shad, this research underscores their significance in defining tolerance thresholds, quantifying the impact of toxic elements along the aquatic food chain, and enhancing the economic sustainability of ichthyofauna monitoring efforts. Furthermore, these studies contribute invaluable insights into the complex dynamics of aquatic ecosystems, offering essential decision-making support for optimizing commercial fishing management practices on the Danube and ensuring robust support systems for industrial fishing endeavors.

Risk assessment and binding mechanisms of potentially toxic metals in sediments from different water levels in a coastal wetland

The excessive accumulation of potentially toxic metals (Pb and Cd) in coastal wetlands is among the main factors threatening wetland ecosystems. However, the effects of water table depth (WTD) on the risk and binding mechanisms of potentially toxic metals in sediments remain unclear. Here, sediments from different WTD obtained from a typical coastal wetland were evaluated using a newly developed strategy based on chemical extraction methods coupled with high-resolution spectroscopy. Our findings indicated that the WTD of the coastal wetland fluctuates frequently and the average enrichment factor for Pb was categorized as minor, whereas Cd enrichment was categorized as moderate. High-resolution spectroscopy techniques also demonstrated that organic functional groups and partly inorganic compounds (e.g., Fe-O/Si-O) played a vital role in the binding of Pb and Cd to surface sediments. Additionally, mineral components rather than organic groups were mainly bound to these metals in the bottom sediments. Collectively, our findings provide key insights into the potential health effects and binding characteristics of potentially toxic metals in sediments, as well as their dynamic behavior under varying sediment depths at a microscale.

Sediment Assessment of the Pchelina Reservoir, Bulgaria

The temporal dynamics of anthropogenic impacts on the Pchelina Reservoir is assessed based on chemical element analysis of three sediment cores at a depth of about 100-130 cm below the surface water. The ¹³⁷Cs activity is measured to identify the layers corresponding to the 1986 Chernobyl accident. The obtained dating of sediment cores gives an average sedimentation rate of 0.44 cm/year in the Pchelina Reservoir. The elements' depth profiles (Ti, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Mo, Sn, Sb, Pb, Co, Cd, Ce, Tl, Bi, Gd, La, Th and U_nat) outline the Struma River as the main anthropogenic source for Pchelina Reservoir sediments. The principal component analysis reveals two groups of chemical elements connected with the anthropogenic impacts. The first group of chemical elements (Mn, Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu, Mo, Sn, Sb and Co) has increasing time trends in the Struma sediment core and no trend or decreasing ones at the Pchelina sampling core. The behavior of these elements is determined by the change of the profile of the industry in the Pernik town during the 1990s. The second group of elements (Zn, Pb, Cd, Bi and U_nat) has increasing time trends in Struma and Pchelina sediment cores. The increased concentrations of these elements during the whole investigated period have led to moderate enrichments for Pb and U_nat, and significant enrichments for Zn and Cd at the Pchelina sampling site. The moderately contaminated, according to the geoaccumulation indexes, Pchelina Reservoir surface sediment samples have low ecotoxicity.

Phosphorus cycling in freshwater lake sediments: Influence of seasonal water level fluctuations

Freshwater lakes experience drastic water level fluctuations because of climate change and human activities. However, the influence of such fluctuations on phosphorus cycling in sediments has rarely been investigated. We conducted a geochemical investigation on the phosphorus cycle in a shallow freshwater lake, Dongting Lake; under the influence of human activities and climate change, its water regime undergoes drastic changes. Irrespective of the permanent inundation zone (PIZ) or seasonal inundation zone (SIZ), the phosphorus cycle in sediments was found to be dominated by the reductive dissolution of iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides, degradation of organic matters, and conversion between authigenic phosphorus (Ca-P) and detrital phosphorus in individual seasons. From winter to summer, with increasing water level, the content of Fe-bound phosphorus and organic phosphorus increase due to the deposition of suspended matter, thus increasing total phosphorus in PIZ. Moreover, the rising water level also reduces the dissolved oxygen content and promotes the reductive dissolution of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides. The mineralization of increased organic matter can release CO₂ and reduce pH in the vicinity, which can further result in the acidic dissolution of detrital apatite. In turn, most of the released phosphorus can be adsorbed or co-precipitated with calcium minerals, resulting in the significant increase of Ca-P. The mechanisms of phosphorus transformation in SIZ are similar to those in PIZ, but most of the increased organic matter and total P in a core from SIZ are attributable to the decomposition of plant matter. Therefore, the water level rise not only changes the conservative speciation of phosphorus in sediments to active speciation, but also triggers the release of phosphorus adsorbed to oxides and further increases the risk of phosphorus release from sediments to overlying water. Thus, our findings have major implications for freshwater shallow lakes and their P-driven productivity.

Effects of seasonal variation and resuspension on microplastics in river sediments

Although microplastics are an emerging pollutant of global concern, little is known about the environmental behavior of microplastic in sediments. This study investigated the occurrence and seasonal variation of microplastics in the sediments of Liangfeng River, China with a fluorescence staining method, and then explored the transfer of microplastics at the water and sediment interfaces during resuspension. The results showed that smaller microplastics were detected in the sediments, which were concentrated in the size range of 50-500 μm. Microplastic abundance in the sediments in the dry season were slightly higher than those from the rainy season, and the rainy season promotes the accumulation of smaller microplastics in the sediment along the river-flow direction but not for the dry season. The shape of microplastics were predominantly fibers, followed by fragments and films. Polyethylene was the most abundant polymer, accounting for more than 50% of the total. Microplastics in the surface sediment move both to the overlying water and deeper sediment during the disturbance process. Disturbance-induced resuspension and vertical transport have significant effects on small-sized microplastics (50-500 μm). Small-sized microplastics can potentially migrate and redistribute via resuspension at different temporal and spatial scales, as some extent of resuspension is occurring in most river systems, especially in urban areas with boat traffic.

Ecological adaptability and population growth tolerance characteristics of Carex cinerascens in response to water level changes in Poyang Lake, China

Water level conditions are the key factors that affect the growth and distribution of wetland plants. Using Carex cinerascens (C. cinerascens) as the study species, we employ indoor simulations and field surveys. Our results show that C. cinerascens can adapt to rhythmic changes in the water level through different adaptation strategies. Compared to that of the control group, plant growth was better with a 0-0.4 cm/d water level rate, and plant growth was in the 42-56 cm range to that a 1.0-1.4 cm/d water level rate. Furthermore, it was observed that 0-0.4 cm/d was the most suitable growth rate, with 0.6-1.0 cm/d and 0-32 cm being the ideal plant tolerance ranges, and increasing to 1.0-1.4 cm/d and 32-56 cm exceeds the plant tolerance threshold. In the middle and late period of the experiment (25-45 d), the ecological characteristics of the plants changed significantly. For example, the root-to-shoot ratio of the plant in the stable water level reached 26.1. In our field observations, plant biomass can be influenced by a variety of environmental factors. The frequency of the species was the largest at an elevation of 15 m, and the growth status of the dominant and companion species of C. cinerascens was weakened with an increase in soil moisture content. The suitable water content for C. cinerascens growth was 27.6-57.3%, the distribution elevation was 12.54-16.59 m, and the optimum elevation was 13.56-15.54 m. The study is expected to provide a reference for wetland ecology research and wetland protection and restoration, a theoretical reference for the coordination of water resource development and utilization of Poyang Lake and ecological protection of important lakes and wetlands, and an important scientific basis for wetland hydrologic regulation, ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation.
