Unraveling the interplay between unicellular parasites and bacterial biofilms: Implications for disease persistence and antibiotic resistance

Bacterial biofilms have attracted significant attention due to their involvement in persistent infections, food and water contamination, and infrastructure corrosion. This review delves into the intricate interactions between bacterial biofilms and unicellular parasites, shedding light on their impact on biofilm formation, structure, and function. Unicellular parasites, including protozoa, influence bacterial biofilms through grazing activities, leading to adaptive changes in bacterial communities. Moreover, parasites like Leishmania and Giardia can shape biofilm composition in a grazing independent manner, potentially influencing disease outcomes. Biofilms, acting as reservoirs, enable the survival of protozoan parasites against environmental stressors and antimicrobial agents. Furthermore, these biofilms may influence parasite virulence and stress responses, posing challenges in disease treatment. Interactions between unicellular parasites and fungal-containing biofilms is also discussed, hinting at complex microbial relationships in various ecosystems. Understanding these interactions offers insights into disease mechanisms and antibiotic resistance dissemination, paving the way for innovative therapeutic strategies and ecosystem-level implications.

Sulfur dots corrosion inhibitors with superior antibacterial and fluorescent properties

In this study, sulfur dots (GA-SDs) synthesized by using Gum Arabic (GA) as a green stabilizer were used as corrosion inhibitors and their inhibition effect for Q235 steel in 3.5- wt% NaCl solution was investigated by weight loss, electrochemical tests, and surface and interface analysis. The results revealed that the inhibition efficiency reached the maximum value of 96.5% at 250 mg/L and the water-soluble GA-SDs were able to adhere to the iron surface through the diffusion and agglomeration effect. The unique antibacterial activities demonstrated a 99.35% inhibition efficiency at 250 mg/L. Moreover, the optical properties endowed the inhibitors with the fluorescence tracing function, which is an effective approach to detecting the residual quantity of water treatment agents. This work may facilitate the development of the next generation of multifunction water treatment agents in industrial circulating water systems.

Mitigation of galvanized steel biocorrosion by Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm using a biocide enhanced by trehalase

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a facultative bacterium that is pathogenic. It is ubiquitous in the environment including air handling systems. It causes microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) aerobically and anaerobically. In this work, P. aeruginosa was grown as a nitrate reducing bacterium (NRB) in Luria-Bertani medium with KNO3 at 37 °C. Trehalase, an enzyme which plays a crucial role in biofilm formation was found to enhance the treatment of P. aeruginosa biofilm and its MIC against galvanized steel by tetrakis-hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate (THPS) green biocide. After a 7-d incubation, 30 ppm (w/w) trehalase reduced sessile cell count by 0.8-log, and it also reduced galvanized steel weight loss by 14%, compared to 2.3-log and 39%, respectively for the 30 ppm THPS treatment. The combination of 30 ppm THPS + 30 ppm trehalase reduced sessile cell count further by 0.1-log and weight loss by 13% compared to using THPS alone. Electrochemical corrosion measurements supported weight loss results. The injection of 20 ppm riboflavin into a 3-d P. aeruginosa broth failed to accelerate the corrosion rate, suggesting that nitrate reducing P. aeruginosa MIC of galvanized steel did not belong to extracellular electron transfer-MIC, because Zn was hydrolyzed after the microbe damaged the passive film.

Enhanced membraneless fuel cells by electrooxidation of ethylene glycol with a nanostructured cobalt metal catalyst

The advancement of effective and long-lasting electrocatalysts for energy storage devices is crucial to reduce the impact of the energy crisis. In this study, a two-stage reduction process was used to synthesize carbon-supported cobalt alloy nanocatalysts with varying atomic ratios of cobalt, nickel and iron. The formed alloy nanocatalysts were investigated using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy to determine their physicochemical characterization. According to XRD results, Cobalt-based alloy nanocatalysts form a face-centered cubic solid solution pattern, illustrating thoroughly mixed ternary metal solid solutions. Transmission electron micrographs also demonstrated that samples of carbon-based cobalt alloys displayed homogeneous dispersion at particle sizes ranging from 18 to 37 nm. Measurements of cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronoamperometry revealed that iron alloy samples exhibited much greater electrochemical activity than non-iron alloy samples. The alloy nanocatalysts were evaluated as anodes for the electrooxidation of ethylene glycol in a single membraneless fuel cell to assess their robustness and efficiency at ambient temperature. Remarkably, in line with the results of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, the single-cell test showed that the ternary anode works better than its counterparts. The significantly higher electrochemical activity was observed for alloy nanocatalysts containing iron than for non-iron alloy catalysts. Iron stimulates nickel sites to oxidize cobalt to cobalt oxyhydroxides at lower over-potentials, which contributes to the improved performance of ternary alloy catalysts containing iron.

Corrosion Behavior on 20# Pipeline Steel by Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria in Simulated NaCl Alkali/Surfactant/Polymer Produced Solution

The corrosion behavior of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on 20# carbon steel in the NaCl alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding system was studied by scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and laser confocal microscopy. The results showed that the presence of SRB results in a large viscosity loss of the system. SRB can use hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) as a nutrient to grow, and the number of SRB remained at a high level after 15 days. Weight loss and electrochemical tests indicated that SRB promoted corrosion of pipeline steel. The corrosion of carbon steel in the early stage of immersion was inhibited by the biofilm formed on the surface, and the thick biofilm in the later stage of immersion caused serious pitting corrosion. The localized corrosion caused by SRB was not inhibited by HPAM and sodium petroleum sulfonate (surfactant) adsorbed on the surface.

The influence of sunitinib and sorafenib, two tyrosine kinase inhibitors, on development and thyroid system in zebrafish larvae

Recently, the potential toxic effects of various pharmaceuticals on the thyroid endocrine system have raised considerable concerns. In this study, we evaluated the adverse effects of sorafenib and sunitinib, two widely used anti-tumor drugs, on the developmental toxicities and thyroid endocrine disruption by using zebrafish (Danio rerio) model. Zebrafish embryos/larvae were exposed to different contentions (0, 10, 50 and 100 nM) of sorafenib and sunitinib for 96 hpf. The results revealed that waterborne exposure to sorafenib and sunitinib exhibited remarkable toxic effects on the survival and development in zebrafish embryos/larvae, which was accompanied by obvious disturbances of thyroid endocrine system (e.g., decreased T3 and T4 content, increased TSH content) and genes' transcription changes within the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. In addition, we verified a strikingly abnormal thyroid gland organogenesis in zebrafish larvae in response to sorafenib and sunitinib, by assessing the development of thyroid follicles using the WISH staining of tg, the Tg (tg:GFP) zebrafish transgenic line, and histopathological analysis. Taken together, our results indicated sorafenib and sunitinib exposure could induce obvious developmental toxicities and thyroid function disruption in zebrafish embryos/larvae, which might involve a regulatory mechanism, at least in part, by destroying the thyroid follicle structure, and by disturbing the balance of the HPT axis.

Growth Inhibition of Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria during Gas and Oil Production Using Novel Schiff Base Diquaternary Biocides: Synthesis, Antimicrobial, and Toxicological Assessment

Upstream crude oil production equipment is always exposed to destruction damagingly which is caused by sulfate-reducing bacterium (SRB) activities that produce H₂S gas, which leads to increased metal corrosion (bio-fouling) rates and inflicts effective infrastructure damage. Hence, oil and gas reservoirs must be injected with biocides and inhibitors which still offer the foremost protection against harmful microbial activity. However, because of the economic and environmental risks associated with biocides, the oil and gas sectors improve better methods for their usage. This work describes the synthesis and evaluation of the biological activities as the cytotoxicity and antimicrobial properties of a series of diquaternary cationic biocides that were studied during the inhibition of microbial biofilms. The prepared diquaternary compound was synthesized by coupling vanillin and 4-aminoantipyrene to achieve the corresponding Schiff base, followed by a quaternization reaction using 1,6-bromohexane, 1,8-bromooctane, and 1,12-bromododecane. The increase of their alkyl chain length from 6 to 12 methylene groups increased the obtained antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity. Antimicrobial efficacies of Q1-3 against various biofilm-forming microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, were examined utilizing the diameter of inhibition zone procedures. The results revealed that cytotoxic efficacies of Q1-3 were significantly associated mainly with maximum surface excess and interfacial characteristics. The cytotoxic efficiencies of Q1-3 biocides demonstrated promising results due to their comparatively higher efficacies against SRB. Q3 exhibited the highest cytotoxic biocide against the gram +ve, gram -ve, and SRB species according to the inhibition zone diameter test. The toxicity of the studied microorganisms depended on the nature and type of the target microorganism and the hydrophobicity of the biocide molecules. Cytotoxicity assessment and antimicrobial activity displayed increased activity by the increase in their alkyl chain length.

The evaluation of Bacillus-secreted polyglutamic acid as anti-scaling treatment for circulating cooling water

Polyaspartic acid is considered a green agent for the treatment of circulating cooling water. However, its chemosynthetic process is not green, as it requires significant amounts of energy and causes water pollution. In this work, we identified an analog of polyaspartic acid, namely polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA), which could be directly produced by Bacillus spp., and we explored its performance and scale inhibition mechanism as a scale inhibitor. We found that γ-PGA secreted by B. megaterium with a molecular weight of ~ 70 kDa showed poor scale inhibition, while the γ-PGA secreted by B. licheniformis with a molecular weight of ~ 15 kDa had a 26.87% higher efficiency compared to commercially available polyaspartic acid. The scale inhibition mechanism was explored using the γ-PGA material secreted by B. licheniformis. Fourier transform spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that the scale inhibition performance of γ-PGA was due to the combination of its functional groups and Ca²⁺, which affected the growth process of CaCO₃ and inhibited the formation of CaCO₃. This study provided deeper insight into scale inhibition performance related to the scale inhibition mechanism.

Process optimization of struvite recovered from slaughterhouse wastewater and its fertilizing efficacy in amendment of biofertilizer

The intensive discharge of slaughterhouse waste into water bodies increases Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) in the wastewater and leads to various environmental problems. On the other hand, the increasing treatment effort after the extraction of these valuable nutrients in the commercial fertilizer reduces the dependence on scarce phosphate resources. The viable solution is to recover N, P as struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) from nutrient rich waste water as a small scale treatment unit application. The main parameters that have a significant impact on the process, including pH, Mg: P ratio, and precipitation time, were investigated from slaughterhouse wastewater using a central composite design and the experimental data's were statistically analysed. The results indicated that pH and Mg/P ratio level had a significant impact and thus 85% struvite precipitation efficiency was achieved at 9.6 pH and 1.5 dose mol ratio (mol Mg per mol P), in an inexpensive, stirred tank batch reactor with a retention time of 70 min. The fertilization efficiency was tested on the growth of Solanum melongena L with the obtained struvite and the integration of struvite with the Azospirullum rhizobium and Bacillus megaterium. Treatment of struvite, struvite with Azospirillum rhizobium and Bacillus megaterium increased growth parameters by 10%, 20%, and 25%, respectively, over control. The assessment of growth factors showed the most amazing number of fruits, shoots, and root length in a standard ratio of 60:40 of struvite to bio-inoculants compared to sole struvite fertilizer. Findings of this study would be beneficial to determine the feasibility of slaughterhouse waste as a phosphorus source for struvite recovery.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polypyrrole Film Doped with Both Molybdate and Salicylate and Its Application in the Corrosion Protection for Low Carbon Steel

Polypyrrole (PPy) films doped with molybdate and salicylate have been successfully electropolymerized on low carbon steel in aqueous solutions containing both molybdate and salicylate in a one-step process that did not require any pre-treatment of the steel substrate. Salicylate-doped PPy films were synthesized in the same way for comparison. The steel surface was rapidly inhibited and the PPy-based films were formed on it easily. The PPy-based films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and thermal gravimetric analysis methods. The corrosion protection performance of the coatings was investigated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, open circuit potential (OCP), salt spray test, and Tafel polarization. It was found that in the presence of both molybdate and salicylate as dopants, the films on steel could present a better corrosion resistance than PPy film doped with only salicylate. The self-healing property of PPy-based films was observed on the OCP measurement with the fluctuation of rest potential. The salt spray test results showed that the PPy film doped with both salicylate and molybdate was more salt-resistant than the PPy film doped with only salicylate. The results suggest that the PPy coatings doped with both molybdate and salicylate are potential for application as metallic anti-corrosion coatings.

Anaerobic Reactor Filling for Phosphorus Removal by Metal Dissolution Method

A commonly indicated drawback of anaerobic wastewater treatment is the low effectiveness of phosphorus removal. One possibility to eliminate this disadvantage is the implementation of active fillings that contain admixtures of metals, minerals, or other elements contributing to wastewater treatment intensification. The aim of the research was to present an active filling produced via microcellular extrusion technology, and to determine its properties and performance in anaerobic wastewater treatment. The influence of copper and iron admixtures on the properties of the obtained porous extrudate in terms of its functional properties was also examined. The Barus effect increased with the highest content of the blowing agent in the material from 110 ± 12 to 134 ± 14. The addition of metal powders caused an increase in the extrudate density. The modification of PVC resulted in the highest porosity, amounting to 47.0% ± 3.2%, and caused the tensile strength to decrease by about 50%. The determined values ranged from 211.8 ± 18.3 MPa to 97.1 ± 10.0 MPa. The use of the filling in anaerobic rectors promoted COD removal, intensified biogas production, and eliminated phosphorus with an efficiency of 64.4% to 90.7%, depending on the type of wastewater and applied technological parameters.

Non-conventional water reuse in agriculture: A circular water economy

Due to the growing and diverse demands on water supply, exploitation of non-conventional sources of water has received much attention. Since water consumption for irrigation is the major contributor to total water withdrawal, the utilization of non-conventional sources of water for the purpose of irrigation is critical to assuring the sustainability of water resources. Although numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate and manage non-conventional water sources, little research has reviewed the suitability of available water technologies for improving water quality, so that water reclaimed from non-conventional supplies could be an alternative water resource for irrigation. This article provides a systematic overview of all aspects of regulation, technology and management to enable the innovative technology, thereby promoting and facilitating the reuse of non-conventional water. The study first reviews the requirements for water quantity and quality (i.e., physical, chemical, and biological parameters) for agricultural irrigation. Five candidate sources of non-conventional water were evaluated in terms of quantity and quality, namely rainfall/stormwater runoff, industrial cooling water, hydraulic fracturing wastewater, process wastewater, and domestic sewage. Water quality issues, such as suspended solids, biochemical/chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, total nitrogen, bacteria, and emerging contaminates, were assessed. Available technologies for improving the quality of non-conventional water were comprehensively investigated. The potential risks to plants, human health, and the environment posed by non-conventional water reuse for irrigation are also discussed. Lastly, three priority research directions, including efficient collection of non-conventional water, design of fit-for-purpose treatment, and deployment of energy-efficient processes, were proposed to provide guidance on the potential for future research.
