A novel CNTs-Fe3O4 synthetized via a ball-milling strategy as efficient fenton-like catalyst for degradation of sulfonamides

Ball billing induced highly dispersed nano-MgO in biochar for glucose isomerization at low temperatures

The isomerization of glucose is a crucial step for biomass valorization to downstream chemicals. Herein, highly dispersed MgO doped biochar (BM-0.5@450) was prepared from rice straw via a solvent-free ball milling pretreatment and pyrolysis under nitrogen conditions. The nano-MgO doped biochar demonstrated enhanced conversion of glucose in water at low temperatures. A 31 % yield of fructose was obtained from glucose over BM-0.5@450 at 50 °C with 80.0 % selectivity. At 60 °C for 140 min, BM-0.5@450 achieved a 32.5 % yield of fructose. Compared to catalyst synthesized from conventional impregnation method (IM@450), the BM-0.5@450 catalyst shows much higher fructose yields (32.5 % vs 25.9 %), which can be attributed to smaller crystallite size of MgO (11.32 nm vs 19.58 nm) and homogenous distribution. The mechanism study shows that the activated MgOH+·OH- group by water facilitated the deprotonation process leading to the formation of key intermediate enediol.

A review on carbon-based biowaste and organic polymer materials for sustainable treatment of sulfonamides from pharmaceutical wastewater

Frequent detection of sulfonamides (SAs) pharmaceuticals in wastewater has necessitated the discovery of suitable technology for their sustainable remediation. Adsorption has been widely investigated due to its effectiveness, simplicity, and availability of various adsorbent materials from natural and artificial sources. This review highlighted the potentials of carbon-based adsorbents derived from agricultural wastes such as lignocellulose, biochar, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes graphene materials as well as organic polymers such as chitosan, molecularly imprinted polymers, metal, and covalent frameworks for SAs removal from wastewater. The promising features of these materials including higher porosity, rich carbon-content, robustness, good stability as well as ease of modification have been emphasized. Thus, the materials have demonstrated excellent performance towards the SAs removal, attributed to their porous nature that provided sufficient active sites for the adsorption of SAs molecules. The modification of physico-chemical features of the materials have been discussed as efficient means for enhancing their adsorption and reusable performance. The article also proposed various interactive mechanisms for the SAs adsorption. Lastly, the prospects and challenges have been highlighted to expand the knowledge gap on the application of the materials for the sustainable removal of the SAs.

From Fenton and ORR 2e−-Type Catalysts to Bifunctional Electrodes for Environmental Remediation Using the Electro-Fenton Process

Currently, the presence of emerging contaminants in water sources has raised concerns worldwide due to low rates of mineralization, and in some cases, zero levels of degradation through conventional treatment methods. For these reasons, researchers in the field are focused on the use of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as a powerful tool for the degradation of persistent pollutants. These AOPs are based mainly on the in-situ production of hydroxyl radicals (OH•) generated from an oxidizing agent (H2O2 or O2) in the presence of a catalyst. Among the most studied AOPs, the Fenton reaction stands out due to its operational simplicity and good levels of degradation for a wide range of emerging contaminants. However, it has some limitations such as the storage and handling of H2O2. Therefore, the use of the electro-Fenton (EF) process has been proposed in which H2O2 is generated in situ by the action of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, it is important to mention that the ORR is given by two routes, by two or four electrons, which results in the products of H2O2 and H2O, respectively. For this reason, current efforts seek to increase the selectivity of ORR catalysts toward the 2e− route and thus improve the performance of the EF process. This work reviews catalysts for the Fenton reaction, ORR 2e− catalysts, and presents a short review of some proposed catalysts with bifunctional activity for ORR 2e− and Fenton processes. Finally, the most important factors for electro-Fenton dual catalysts to obtain high catalytic activity in both Fenton and ORR 2e− processes are summarized.

Mechanochemical synthesis of catalysts and reagents for water decontamination: Recent advances and perspective

This paper aims to provide insights on mechanochemistry as a green and versatile tool to synthesize advanced materials for water remediation. In particular, mechanochemical methodologies for preparation of reagents and catalysts for the removal of organic pollutants are reviewed and discussed, focusing on those materials that, directly or indirectly, induce redox reactions in the contaminants (i.e., photo-, persulfate-, ozone-, and Fenton-catalysts, as well as redox reagents). Methods reported in the literature include surface reactivity enhancement for single-component materials, as well as multi-component material design to obtain synergistic effects in catalytic efficiency and/or reactivity. It was also amply demonstrated that mechanochemical surface activation or the incorporation of catalytic/reactive components boost the generation of reactive species in water by accelerating charge transfer, increasing superficial active sites, and developing pollutant absorption. Finally, indications for potential future developments in this field are debated.

Accelerating the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle via enhanced electronic effect in NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)/TPB-DMTP-COF composite for boosting photo-Fenton degradation of sulfamerazine

In the photo-Fenton reactions, fast recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes in Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) slows Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, which remains big challenge that significantly retards the overall process. Herein, NH₂-MIL-88B(Fe) (NM88) was modified with 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DB) and TPB-DMTP-COF (COF-OMe) to in situ construct NM88(DB)_0.85/COF-OMe composite that could strongly harvest the visible light for photo-Fenton degradation of sulfamerazine (SMR). With the addition of DB, electron-donating effect of NM88 was strengthened, which then promoted amino groups to react with aldehyde groups (Schiff-base), and thus highly facilitated the interfacial contact between NM88 and COF-OMe. Such modifications increased the degradation rate constants for NM88(DB)_0.85/COF-OMe to 15.1 and 17.3 times that of NM88 and COF-OMe respectively with good reusability. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited 32-170 times higher degradation kinetics in comparison to other reported catalysts. Results showed that due to the Schiff-base reaction between NM88(DB) and COF-OMe, electron density on Fe(III) was decreased; and the photogenerated electrons of COF-OMe moved to NM88(DB) to reduce Fe(III), thus resulting in the generation of highly active Fe(II) and ·OH species. Furthermore, the main reactive species were determined to be ·OH and ·O₂^- by trapping experiments, and a possible mechanism of the degradation system followed Z-scheme charge transfer.

Visible light photocatalytic degradation of sulfanilamide enhanced by Mo doping of BiOBr nanoflowers

Design of high-efficiency visible light photocatalysts is critical in the degradation of antibiotic pollutants in water, a key step towards environmental remediation. In the present study, Mo-doped BiOBr nanocomposites are prepared hydrothermally at different feed ratios, and display remarkable visible light photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of sulfanilamide, a common antibacterial drug. Among the series, the sample with 2% Mo dopants exhibits the best photocatalytic activity, with a performance 2.3 times better that of undoped BiOBr. This is attributed to Mo doping that narrows the band gap of BiOBr and enhances absorption in the visible region. Additional contributions arise from the unique materials morphology, where the highly exposed (102) crystal planes enrich the photocatalytic active sites, and facilitate the adsorption of sulfanilamide molecules and their eventual attack by free radicals. The reaction mechanism and pathways are then unraveled based on theoretical calculations of the Fukui index and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry measurements of the reaction intermediates and products. Results from this study indicate that deliberate structural engineering based on heteroatom doping and morphological control may serve as an effective strategy in the design of highly active photocatalysts towards antibiotic degradation.

Removal of antimonite (Sb(III)) from aqueous solution using a magnetic iron-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite: Experimental observations and governing mechanisms

In this study, a novel nanoscale iron oxide (FeO_x) modified carbon nanotubes composite (FeO_x@CNTs) was synthesized through a combined ball milling-hydrothermal two-step method and tested for aqueous Sb(III) removal efficiency and mechanisms. FeO_x nanoparticles was successfully loaded on the surface of CNTs through functional groups such as hydroxyl (-OH), C-H, and C-O to enhance the removal efficiency of Sb(III) through adsorption and surface complexation. At a dosage of 0.02 g, a FeCl₃·6H₂O-to-CNTs mass ratio of 3:1, and an initial solution pH of 6.3, the amount of Sb(III) removed by the prepared FeO_x@CNTs reached 172 mg/g, which was 42.9 times higher than that of the pristine CNTs (4.01 mg/g). Chemical adsorption and oxidation were the main removal mechanisms. At the equilibrium Sb(III) concentration of 6.08 mg/L, 6.56% of initial Sb(III) was adsorbed onto the surface of FeO_x@CNTs, and 81.3% of initial Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) with lower toxicity. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model could better describe the adsorption of Sb(III) onto the FeO_x@CNTs composite, indicating that adsorption was mainly controlled by chemical sorption. In the adsorption isotherm equation, the Redlich-Peterson model provided a better fit of Sb(III) adsorption onto the FeO_x@CNTs composite than the Langmuir and Freundlich models, which further indicated that the adsorption process was a hybrid removal process dominated by chemical sorption. The presence of CO₃^2- slightly promoted the removal of Sb(III) from aqueous solution. The synthesized composite was magnetic and could be easily separated from the solution by an external magnetic field at the end of the sorption experiment. Based on these findings, the FeO_x@CNTs nanocomposite is expected to provide an environmentally-friendly adsorbent with a strong sorption capacity for remediating Sb(III) in water environments.

Degradation of sulfadiazine in aqueous media by peroxymonosulfate activated with biochar-supported ZnFe2O4 in combination with visible light in an internal loop-lift reactor

Solid waste resource utilization and the treatment of wastewater are two important aspects in environmental protection. Here, biochar (BC) derived from municipal sewage sludge has been combined with ZnFe₂O₄ to form the photocatalyst ZnFe₂O₄/biochar (ZnFe/BC), and it was used to degrade sulfadiazine (SDZ) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible (Vis) light irradiation in an internal loop-airlift reactor (ALR). The surface morphology and structure of ZnFe/BC have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy equipped with an attachment for energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). ZnFe/BC displays outstanding photocatalytic performance and reusability. After four reuse cycles of ZnFe/BC in the Vis/ZnFe/BC/PMS system, the SDZ degradation rate and efficiency still reached 0.082 min⁻¹ and 99.05%, respectively. Reactive species in this system included free radicals SO₄˙⁻, ˙OH, and ˙O₂⁻, as well as non-radicals ¹O₂, e⁻, and h⁺, as established from the results of chemical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses. Moreover, a mechanism of action of the Vis/ZnFe/BC/PMS system for SDZ degradation was proposed. The acute toxicity of the reaction solution towards Photobacterium phosphoreum T3 spp. in the Vis/ZnFe/BC/PMS process increased during the first 40 min and then decreased, illustrating that Vis/ZnFe/BC/PMS provided an effective and safe method for the removal of SDZ.
