A comprehensive review of the "black gold catalysts" in wastewater treatment: Properties, applications and bibliometric analysis

A significant amount of effort has been devoted to the utilization of biochar-based catalysts in the treatment of wastewater. By virtue of its abundant functional groups and high specific surface area, biochar holds significant promise as a catalyst. This article presents a comprehensive systematic review and bibliometric analysis covering the period from 2009 to 2024, focusing on the restoration of wastewater through biochar catalysis. The production, activation, and functionalization techniques employed for biochar are thoroughly examined. In addition, the application of advanced technologies such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), catalytic reduction reactions, and biochemically driven processes based on biochar are discussed, with a focus on elucidating the underlying mechanisms and how surface functionalities influence the catalytic performance of biochar. Furthermore, the potential drawbacks of utilizing biochar are also brought to light. To emphasize the progress being made in this research field and provide valuable insights for future researchers, a scientometric analysis was conducted using CiteSpace and VOSviewer software on 595 articles. Hopefully, this review will enhance understanding of the catalytic performance and mechanisms pertaining to biochar-based catalysts in pollutant treatment while providing a perspective and guidelines for future research and development efforts in this area.

Roles of BOCu sites and graphite nitrogen on persulfate non-radical activation for tetracycline degradation

The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by carbon-based catalysts is deemed to be a promising method for the degradation of refractory organic contaminants in wastewater. Herein, a Cu-doping strategy in B and N co-doped carbon nanotubes with highly dispersed BOCu sites and graphite nitrogen were successfully synthesized for activating PMS to degradate tetracycline. The best removal rate of tetracycline within 60 min (97.63 %) was obtained by the 1.5 % Cu-BNC and the degradation rate was increased by 17.9 times. The enhanced catalyst activity was attributed to the promoting the cycle of the Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox pair by the formed BOCu sites, and the accelerating the electron transfer process by the adsorption of graphitic N for PMS. The non-free radical pathway including 1O2 and electron transfer played a dominant role in the 1.5 % Cu-BNC/PMS system. The degradation intermediates of TC were identified and three possible degradation pathways were proposed. Further toxicity analysis of the intermediates showed that the 1.5 % Cu-BNC/PMS system had a significant effect on weakening and reducing the biological toxicity and mutagenicity of TC. Moreover, it presented an excellent degradation performance in raw natural water. In general, the proposed regulation of carbon-based catalysts via the coordination-driven effect provides ideas for efficient wastewater treatment.

Recent trends and economic significance of modified/functionalized biochars for remediation of environmental pollutants

The pollution of soil and aquatic systems by inorganic and organic chemicals has become a global concern. Economical, eco-friendly, and sustainable solutions are direly required to alleviate the deleterious effects of these chemicals to ensure human well-being and environmental sustainability. In recent decades, biochar has emerged as an efficient material encompassing huge potential to decontaminate a wide range of pollutants from soil and aquatic systems. However, the application of raw biochars for pollutant remediation is confronting a major challenge of not getting the desired decontamination results due to its specific properties. Thus, multiple functionalizing/modification techniques have been introduced to alter the physicochemical and molecular attributes of biochars to increase their efficacy in environmental remediation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in developing multiple functionalized/modified biochars via biological and other physiochemical techniques. Related mechanisms and further applications of multiple modified biochar in soil and water systems remediation have been discussed and summarized. Furthermore, existing research gaps and challenges are discussed, as well as further study needs are suggested. This work epitomizes the scientific prospects for a complete understanding of employing modified biochar as an efficient candidate for the decontamination of polluted soil and water systems for regenerative development.

Ferrous disulfide and iron nitride sites on hydrochar to enhance synergistic adsorption and reduction of hexavalent chromium

In this study, a novel hydrochar containing ferrous disulfide (FeS2) and iron nitride (FeN) was prepared via a one-pot hydrothermal method to enhance the synergistic adsorption and reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). This material (Fe3-SNHC) exhibited a Cr(VI) removal capacity of 431.3 mg·g-1 and high tolerance to coexisting anions at pH 2. Adsorption occurred via monolayer chemisorption. Variation in material structure and density functional theory calculations proved that multiple active sites formed by interactions between heteroatoms improved the chemical inertness of hydrochar. FeN and FeS2 with two electron-donating groups had strong reducing ability to facilitate the conversion of Cr(VI) to trivalent chromium. It was concluded that next to electrostatic adsorption and complexation, synergistic reduction among multiple active sites were the dominant mechanisms involved in the removal Cr(VI). This study shows that Fe3-SNHC is a promising and environment-friendly material for Cr(VI) to remove it from wastewater.

N,S-codoped biochar outperformed N-doped biochar on co-activation of H2O2 with trace dissolved Fe(Ⅲ) for enhanced oxidation of organic pollutants

Co-activation of H2O2 with biochar and iron sources together provides an attractive strategy for efficient removal of refractory pollutants, because it can solve the problems of slow Fe(Ⅱ) regeneration in Fenton/Fenton-like processes and of low •OH yield in biochar-activated process. In this study, a wood-derived biochar (WB) was modified by heteroatom doping for the objective of enhancing its reactivity toward co-activation of H2O2. The performance of the co-activated system using doped biochars and trace dissolved Fe(Ⅲ) on oxidation of organic pollutants was evaluated for the first time. The characterizations using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectra and electrochemical analyses indicate that heteroatom doping introduced more defects in biochar and improved its electron transfer capacity. The oxidation experiments show that heteroatom doping improved the performance of biochar in the co-activated process, in which the N,S-codoped biochar (NSB) outperformed the N-doped biochar (NB) on oxidation of pollutants. The reaction rate constant (kobs) for oxidation of sulfadiazine in NSB + Fe + H2O2 is 2.25 times that in NB + Fe + H2O2, and is 72.9 times that in the Fenton-like process without biochar, respectively. The mechanism investigations indicate that heteroatom doping enhanced biochar's reactivity on catalyzing the decomposition of H2O2 and on reduction of Fe(Ⅲ) due to the improved electron transfer/donation capacity. In comparison with N-doping, N,S-codoping provided additional electron donor (thiophenic C-S-C) for faster regeneration of Fe(Ⅱ) with less amount of doping reagent used. Furthermore, co-activation with NSB maintained to be efficient at a milder acidic pH than Fenton/Fenton-like processes, and can be used for oxidation of different pollutants and in real water. Therefore, this research provides a novel, sustainable and cost-efficient method for oxidation of refractory pollutants.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by Fe-N-S co-doped tremella-like carbocatalyst for degradation of bisphenol A: Synergistic effect of pyridine N, Fe-Nx, thiophene S

Bisphenol A (BPA) has received increasing attention due to its long-term industrial application and persistence in environmental pollution. Iron-based carbon catalyst activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) shows a good prospect for effective elimination of recalcitrant contaminants in water. Herein, considering the problem about the leaching of iron ions and the optimization of heteroatoms doping, the iron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped tremella-like carbon catalyst (Fe-NS@C) was rationally designed using very little iron, S-C₃N₄ and low-cost chitosan (CS) via the impregnation-calcination method. The as-prepared Fe-NS@C exhibited excellent performance for complete removal of BPA (20 mg/L) by activating PMS with the high kinetic constant (1.492 min^-1) in 15 min. Besides, the Fe-NS@C/PMS system not only possessed wide pH adaptation and high resistance to environmental interference, but also maintained an excellent degradation efficiency on different pollutants. Impressively, increased S-C₃N₄ doping amount modulated the contents of different N species in Fe-NS@C, and the catalytic activity of Fe-NS@C-1-x was visibly enhanced with increasing S-C₃N₄ contents, verifying pyridine N and Fe-N_x as main active sites in the system. Meanwhile, thiophene sulfur (C-S-C) as active sites played an auxiliary role. Furthermore, quenching experiment, EPR analysis and electrochemical test proved that surface-bound radicals (^·OH and SO₄^⋅-) and non-radical pathways worked in the BPA degradation (the former played a dominant role). Finally, possible BPA degradation route were proposed. This work provided a promising way to synthesize the novel Fe, N and S co-doping carbon catalyst for degrading organic pollutants with low metal leaching and high catalytic ability.

Nitrogen-doped biochar (N-doped BC) and iron/nitrogen co-doped biochar (Fe/N co-doped BC) for removal of refractory organic pollutants

The presence of refractory organic pollutants (ROPs) in the ecosystem is a serious concern because of their impact on environmental constituents as well as their known or suspected ecotoxicity and adverse health effects. According to previous studies, carbonaceous materials, such as biochar (BC), have been widely used to remove pollutants from ecosystems owing to their desirable features, such as relative stability, tunable porosity, and abundant functionalities. Nitrogen (N)-doping and iron/nitrogen (Fe/N) co-doping can tailor BC properties and provide supplementary functional groups as well as extensive active sites on the N-doped and Fe/N co-doped BC surface, which is advantageous for interaction with and removal of ROPs. This review investigates the impact of N-doped and Fe/N co-doped BC on the removal of ROPs through adsorption, activation oxidation, and catalytic reduction due to the synergistic Fe, N, and BC features that modify the physicochemical properties, surface functional groups, and persistent free radicals of BC to aid in the degradation of ROPs. Owing to the attractive properties of N-doped and Fe/N co-doped BCs for the removal of ROPs, this review focuses and evaluates previous experimental investigations on the manufacturing (including precursors and influencing parameters during manufacturing) and characterizations of N-doped and Fe/N co-doped BCs. Additionally, the effective applications and mechanisms of N-doped and Fe/N co-doped BCs in adsorption, activation oxidation, and reductive remediation of ROPs are investigated herein. Moreover, the application of N-doped and Fe/N co-doped BC for progressive environmental remediation based on their effectiveness against co-pollutants, regeneration, stability, affordability, and future research prospects are discussed.

Effect of metal doping (Me = Zn, Cu, Co, Mn) on the performance of bismuth ferrite as peroxymonosulfate activator for ciprofloxacin removal

In this study, a facile hydrothermal method was employed to prepare Me-doped Bi₂Fe₄O₉ (Me = Zn, Cu, Co, and Mn) as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The characteristics of the Me-doped bismuth ferrites were investigated using various characterization instruments including SEM, TEM, FTIR and porosimeter indicating that the Me-doped Bi₂Fe₄O₉ with nanosheet-like square orthorhombic structure was successfully obtained. The catalytic activity of various Me-doped Bi₂Fe₄O₉ was compared and the results indicated that the Cu-doped Bi₂Fe₄O₉ at 0.08 wt.% (denoted as BFCuO-0.08) possessed the greatest catalytic activity (k_app = 0.085 min^-1) over other Me-doped Bi₂Fe₄O₉ under the same condition. The synergistic interaction between Cu, Fe and oxygen vacancies are the key factors which enhanced the performance of Me-doped Bi₂Fe₄O₉. The effects of catalyst loading, PMS dosage, and pH on CIP degradation were also investigated indicating that the performance increased with increasing catalyst loading, PMS dosage, and pH. Meanwhile, the dominant reactive oxygen species was identified using the chemical scavengers with SO₄^•-, ^•OH, and ¹O₂ playing a major role in CIP degradation. The performance of BFCuO-0.08 deteriorated in real water matrix (tap water, river water and secondary effluent) due to the presence of various water matrix species. Nevertheless, the BFCuO-0.08 catalyst possessed remarkable stability and can be reused for at least four successive cycles with >70% of CIP degradation efficiency indicating that it is a promising catalyst for antibiotics removal.

Yolk-shell Co3 O4 @Fe3 O4 /C Nanocomposites as a Heterogeneous Fenton-like Catalyst for Organic Dye Removal

The yolk-shell Co₃ O₄ @Fe₃ O₄ /C nanocomposites with Co₃ O₄ as the core, Fe₃ O₄ /C as the shell, and a cavity structure were synthesized by the hard template method. The physical and chemical properties of the composites were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, TGA, XPS, BET, and VSM. The specific surface area of yolk-shell Co₃ O₄ @Fe₃ O₄ /C nanocomposites is 175.9 m²  g^-1 , showing superparamagnetic properties. The yolk-shell Co₃ O₄ @Fe₃ O₄ /C nanocomposites were used as heterogeneous Fenton catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade MB, which showed high catalytic degradation performance. The degradation rate of MB reached 100 % within 30 min under the circumstances of the yolk-shell Co₃ O₄ @Fe₃ O₄ /C nanocomposites dosage of 0.1 g L^-1 , the PMS dosage of 1.0 g L^-1 , the initial MB concentration of 100 mg L^-1 , an initial pH of 5.5, and a temperature of 30±2 °C. The enhanced catalytic performance of the yolk-shell Co₃ O₄ @Fe₃ O₄ /C nanocomposites can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the two catalytically active materials and the middle cavity. The effects of different operating parameters and co-existing anion species on MB degradation were also investigated. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments confirmed that the formation of SO₄ ⋅^- in the yolk-shell Co₃ O₄ @Fe₃ O₄ /C/PMS system contributes to MB degradation. In addition, yolk-shell Co₃ O₄ @Fe₃ O₄ /C nanocomposites can be easily separated from the pollutant solution under the action of an external magnetic field, and the degradation rate of MB can still reach 98 % after five cycles, indicating that it has good stability and reusability and has broad application prospects in the field of water purification.

Catalytic ozonation for imazapic degradation over kelp-derived biochar: Promotional role of N- and S-based active sites

It is a feasible strategy to prepare reliable biochar catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) processes by using inexpensive, high quality, and easily available raw materials. Here, an environmentally friendly, simple, and green biochar catalyst rich in nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) has been prepared by the pyrolysis of kelp. Compared with directly carbonized kelp biomass (KB), acid-activated KB (KBA) and base-activated KB (KBB) have higher specific surface areas and more extensive porous structures, although only KBB displays effective ozone activation. Imazapic (IMZC), a refractory organic herbicide, was chosen as the target pollutant, which has apparently not hitherto been investigated in the HCO process. Second-order rate constants (k) for the reactions of IMZC with three different reactive oxygen species (ROS), specifically kO3, IMZC, kOH, IMZC, and k1O2, IMZC, have been determined as 0.974, 2.48 × 109, and 6.23 × 105 M-1 s-1, respectively. The amounts of graphitic N and thiophene S derived from the intrinsic N and S showed good correlations with the IMZC degradation rate, implicating them as the main active sites. OH and O2- and 1O2 were identified as main ROS in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation system for IMZC degradation. This study exemplified the utilization of endogenous N and S in biological carbon, and provided more options for the application of advanced oxidation processes and the development of marine resources.

Synergistic reduction of Cr(VI) by graphite N and thiophene S of N, S-co-doped hydrochar derived from waste straw

An efficient, simple, and inexpensive N, S-co-doped hydrochar (SNHC) was synthesized from waste straw by a one-pot hydrothermal process without calcination for the removal of Cr(VI). SNHC demonstrated excellent adsorption performance for Cr(VI) and high stability, achieving a high capacity of 171.33 mg/g (293 K, pH 2) and a capacity retention of 82.73 % after five cycles. The adsorption behavior was determined as a multilayer adsorption process based on chemisorption according to the simulation the results of Freundlich adsorption isotherms and pseudo-second-order models. The characterization of SNHC revealed that graphite N and thiophene S formed by the material were the effective active sites, functioning as electron donors to contribute a significant amount of electrons to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Therefore, next to electrostatic adsorption and complexation, the synergistic reduction of Cr(VI) by graphite N and thiophene S was the main mechanism for Cr(VI) removal. Additionally, density functional theory calculations indicated a low adsorption energy of thiophene S, which increased the attractive interaction between SNHC and Cr(VI) and played the most important role in reducing Cr(VI). The mechanism of the effect of graphite N and thiophene S on Cr(VI) removal not only offered a comprehensive perspective on the role of N, S co-doped mediation in hydrochar but also provided the basic theory for its practical application.

Promotional effect of Ca doping on Bi2Fe4O9 as peroxymonosulfate activator for gatifloxacin removal

A series of Ca-doped bismuth ferrite was prepared at various %w/w of Ca via a facile hydrothermal method to obtain Bi_2XCa_2(1-X)Fe₄O₉ (denoted as BFOCa-X, where X = 1, 0.95, 0.90, 0.80, 0.50). The BFOCa-X catalysts were characterized, and the results showed that they consist of pure phase BFO with nanosheet-like morphology. The as-prepared BFOCa-X catalysts were used as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for gatifloxacin (GAT) removal. It was found that the catalytic activity decreased in the following order: BFOCa-0.8 (90.2% GAT removal efficiency in 45 min, k_app = 0.084 min^-1)>BFOCa-0.95 > BFOCa-0.9 > BFOCa-0.5 > BFO indicating that BFOCa-0.8 has the optimized active sites for catalysis. The Ca dopant contributed to the increased oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups, promoting the catalytic PMS activation process. The k_app value increased gradually with increasing catalyst loading and PMS dosage while pH 9 presented the highest GAT removal rate. The GAT degradation rate was inhibited by PO₄³-, humic acid and NH₄⁺ but promoted in the presence of Cl-, NO₃- and HCO₃-. It was also found that the GAT can undergo several degradation pathways in the catalytic PMS system, which eventually mineralized into innocuous compounds. The dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) were identified using chemical scavengers, revealing that SO₄^•-, ¹O₂ and ^•OH contributed significantly to GAT degradation. Based on the XPS study, PMS was activated by the Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ redox cycling and oxygen vacancies to produce SO₄^•-/^•OH and ¹O₂, respectively. Overall, the BFOCa-0.8 also showed excellent reusability up to at least 4 cycles with low Bi and Fe leaching (<7 and 62 μg L^-1, respectively), indicating that it has promising potential for application as PMS activator for antibiotics removal.

Multi-heteroatom-doped carbocatalyst as peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate activator for water purification: A critical review

Catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) (or collectively known as persulfate, PS) using carbocatalyst is increasingly gaining attention as a promising technology for sustainable recalcitrant pollutant removal in water. Single heteroatom doping using either N, S, B or P is widely used to enhance the performance of the carbocatalyst for PS activation. However, the performance enhancement from single heteroatom doping is limited by the type of heteroatom used. To further enhance the performance of the carbocatalyst beyond the limit of single heteroatom doping, multi-heteroatom doping can be conducted. This review aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview on the development of multi-heteroatom-doped carbocatalyst for PS activation. The potential synergistic and antagonistic interactions of various heteroatoms including N and B, N and S, N and P, and N and halogen for PS activation are evaluated. Thereafter, the preparation strategies to develop multi-heteroatom-doped carbocatalyst including one-step and multi-step preparation approaches along with the characterization techniques are discussed. Evidence and summary of the performance of multi-heteroatom-doped carbocatalyst for various recalcitrant pollutants removal via PS activation are also provided. Finally, the prospects of employing multi-heteroatom-doped carbocatalyst including the need to study the correlation between different heteroatom combination, surface moiety type, and amount of dopant with the PS activation mechanism, identifying the best heteroatom combination, improving the durability of the carbocatalyst, evaluating the feasibility for full-scale application, developing low-cost multi-heteroatom-doped carbocatalyst, and assessing the environmental impact are also briefly discussed.

Application of Biochar as Functional Material for Remediation of Organic Pollutants in Water: An Overview

In recent years, numerous studies have focused on the use of biochar as a biological material for environmental remediation due to its low-cost precursor (waste), low toxicity, and diversity of active sites, along with their facile tailoring techniques. Due to its versatility, biochar has been employed as an adsorbent, catalyst (for activating hydrogen peroxide, ozone, persulfate), and photocatalyst. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview and compare the application of biochar in water remediation. First, the biochar active sites with their functions are presented. Secondly, an overview and summary of biochar performance in treating organic pollutants in different systems is depicted. Thereafter, an evaluation on performance, removal mechanism, active sites involvement, tolerance to different pH values, stability, and reusability, and an economic analysis of implementing biochar for organic pollutants decontamination in each application is presented. Finally, potential prospects to overcome the drawbacks of each application are provided.

Z-scheme Fe2(MoO4)3/Ag/Ag3PO4 heterojunction with enhanced degradation rate by in-situ generated H2O2: Turning waste (H2O2) into wealth (•OH)

Ag₃PO₄-based photocatalysts have been deeply studied in environmental remediation; however, two problems limited their further application: photocorrosion and quenching effect by in-situ generated H₂O₂. To addressed these two questions simultaneously, Fe₂(MoO₄)₃ was coupled with Ag₃PO₄ to construct Z-scheme Fe₂(MoO₄)₃/Ag/Ag₃PO₄ heterojunction driven by internal-electric-field. The rhodamine B degradation rate of heterojunction was 254 and 7.0 times higher than those of Fe₂(MoO₄)₃ and Ag₃PO₄, respectively. The outstanding photoactivity was due to the high visible-light harvest, low interface resistance, high separation efficiency of charge carriers, long lifetime of hole (h⁺) and electron (e^-), well-preserved oxidation potential of h⁺, and especially photocatalytic produced H₂O₂ inside the system. The in-situ generated H₂O₂ was fully activated to be ^•OH on the Fe₂(MoO₄)₃ surface via a Fenton reaction, leading to the elimination of quenching effect on h⁺ and e^-, and generation of more ^•OH. Additionally, in Z-scheme heterojunction, e^- transferred from Ag₃PO₄ to Fe₂(MoO₄)₃, avoiding the accumulation on Ag₃PO₄ surface, and hence suppressing the photocorrosion. As a result, 91.2% of degradation efficiency remained after 5 cycles. This paper provides a new method to simultaneously increase the degradation rate by utilizing the in-situ generated H₂O₂ and improve the stability of Ag₃PO₄ via constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction.

Magnetically modified in-situ N-doped Enteromorpha prolifera derived biochar for peroxydisulfate activation: Electron transfer induced singlet oxygen non-radical pathway

Herein, in-situ N-doped Enteromorpha prolifera derived magnetic biochar (MBC) was prepared by loading Fe₃O₄. It can effectively activate peroxodisulfate (PDS) to degrade tetracycline (TC) and easy recycling. The removal rate of TC reached 87.2%, and its possible degradation pathway was revealed through a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer. This work first proposes the mechanism of in-situ N-doping and Fe synergistic effect on PDS activation. Unlike the well-reported role of N doping in activating PDS, except for the edge pyridine N plays a significant role in the activation of PDS. After the load of Fe, the synergistic effect of Fe and graphite N induces a non-radical path dominated by singlet oxygen (¹O₂) due to the excellent electron transfer function. Through chemical quenching experiment, electron spin detection, and electrochemical analysis, the mechanism of PDS activation by MBC was thoroughly investigate. This research will deepen the understanding of the mechanism of transition metals and carbon materials in synergistically driving PDS activation, and guide biochar-mediated PDS activation in environmental remediation.

An all-lignin-based flexible supercapacitor based on a nitrogen-doped carbon dot functionalized graphene hydrogel

In this manuscript, the synthesis of a nitrogen-doped carbon dot functionalized graphene hydrogel and its application as a supercapacitor electrode have been reported.
