The impact of microplastics on sulfur REDOX processes in different soil types: A mechanism study

Microplastics can potentially affect the physical and chemical properties of soil, as well as soil microbial communities. This could, in turn, influence soil sulfur REDOX processes and the ability of soil to supply sulfur effectively. However, the specific mechanisms driving these effects remain unclear. To explore this, soil microcosm experiments were conducted to assess the impacts of polystyrene (PS) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) microplastics on sulfur reduction-oxidation (REDOX) processes in black, meadow, and paddy soils. The findings revealed that PS and PPS most significantly decreased SO42- in black soil by 9.4%, elevated SO42- in meadow soil by 20.8%, and increased S2- in paddy soil by 20.5%. PS and PPS microplastics impacted the oxidation process of sulfur in soil by influencing the activity of sulfur dioxygenase, which was mediated by α-proteobacteria and γ-proteobacteria, and the oxidation process was negatively influenced by soil organic matter. PS and PPS microplastics impacted the reduction process of sulfur in soil by influencing the activity of adenosine-5'-phosphosulfate reductase, sulfite reductase, which was mediated by Desulfuromonadales and Desulfarculales, and the reduction process was positively influenced by soil organic matter. In addition to their impacts on microorganisms, it was found that PP and PPS microplastics directly influenced the structure of soil enzymes, leading to alterations in soil enzyme activity. This study sheds light on the mechanisms by which microplastics impact soil sulfur REDOX processes, providing valuable insights into how microplastics influence soil health and functioning, which is essential for optimizing crop growth and maximizing yield in future agricultural practices.

Unlocking bioremediation potential for site restoration: A comprehensive approach for crude oil degradation in agricultural soil and phytotoxicity assessment

Crude oil contamination has inflicted severe damage to soil ecosystems, necessitating effective remediation strategies. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of four different techniques (biostimulation, bioaugmentation, bioaugmentation + biostimulation, and natural attenuation) for remediating agricultural soil contaminated with crude oil using soil microcosms. A consortium of previously characterized bacteria Xanthomonas boreopolis, Microbacterium schleiferi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus velezensis was constructed for bioaugmentation. The microbial count for the constructed consortium was recorded as 2.04 ± 0.11 × 108 CFU/g on 60 d in augmented and stimulated soil samples revealing their potential to thrive in chemically contaminated-stress conditions. The microbial consortium through bioaugmentation + biostimulation approach resulted in 79 ± 0.92% degradation of the total polyaromatic hydrocarbons (2 and 3 rings ∼ 74%, 4 and 5 rings ∼ 83% loss) whereas, 91 ± 0.56% degradation of total aliphatic hydrocarbons (C8-C16 ∼ 90%, C18-C28 ∼ 92%, C30 to C40 ∼ 88% loss) was observed in 60 d. Further, after 60 d of microcosm treatment, the treated soil samples were used for phytotoxicity assessment using wheat (Triticum aestivum), black chickpea (Cicer arietinum), and mustard (Brassica juncea). The germination rates for wheat (90%), black chickpea (100%), and mustard (100%) were observed in 7 d with improved shoot-root length and biomass in both bioaugmentation and biostimulation approaches. This study projects a comprehensive approach integrating bacterial consortium and nutrient augmentation strategies and underscores the vital role of innovative environmental management practices in fostering sustainable remediation of oil-contaminated soil ecosystems. The formulated bacterial consortium with a nutrient augmentation strategy can be utilized to restore agricultural lands towards reduced phytotoxicity and improved plant growth.

Research progress on remediation of organochlorine pesticide contamination in soil

Deteriorated soil pollution has grown into a worldwide environmental concern over the years. Organochlorine pesticide (OCP) residues, featured with ubiquity, persistence and refractoriness, are one of the main pollution sources, causing soil degradation, fertility decline and nutritional imbalance, and severely impacting soil ecology. Furthermore, residual OCPs in soil may enter the human body along with food chain accumulation and pose a serious health threat. To date, many remediation technologies including physicochemical and biological ways for organochlorine pollution have been developed at home and abroad, but none of them is a panacea suitable for all occasions. Rational selection and scientific decision-making are grounded in in-depth knowledge of various restoration techniques. However, soil pollution treatment often encounters the interference of multiple factors (climate, soil properties, cost, restoration efficiency, etc.) in complex environments, and there is still a lack of systematic summary and comparative analysis of different soil OCP removal methods. Thus, to better guide the remediation of contaminated soil, this review summarized the most commonly used strategies for OCP removal, evaluated their merits and limitations and discussed the application scenarios of different methods. It will facilitate the development of efficient, inexpensive and environmentally friendly soil remediation strategies for sustainable agricultural and ecological development.

Holistic approach to waste mobil oil bioremediation: Valorizing waste through biosurfactant production for soil restoration

The combustion of mobil oil leads to the emission of toxic compounds in the environment. In this study, the aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon fractions present in a waste mobil oil collected from automobile market were comprehensively identified and their toxicity was evaluated using wheat grain. Lysinibacillus sphaericus strain IITR51 isolated and characterized previously could degrade 30-80% of both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons in liquid culture. Interestingly, the strain IITR51 produced 627 mg/L of rhamnolipid biosurfactant by utilizing 3% (v/v) of waste mobil oil in the presence of 1.5% glycerol as additional carbon source. In a soil microcosm study by employing strain IITR51, 50-86% of 3-6 ring aromatic hydrocarbons and 63-98% of aliphatic hydrocarbons (C8 to C22) were degraded. Addition of 60 μg/mL rhamnolipid biosurfactant enhanced the degradation of both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons from 76.88% to 61.21%-94.11% and 78.27% respectively. The degradation of mobil oil components improved the soil physico-chemical properties and increased soil fertility to 64% as evident by the phytotoxicity assessments. The findings indicate that strain IITR51 with degradation capability coupled with biosurfactant production could be a candidate for restoring hydrocarbon contaminated soils.

Biodiversity in wetland+ system: a passive solution for HCH dump effluents

The hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCH) are long-banned pesticides. Even though their use has been prohibited for decades, their presence in the environment is still reported worldwide. Wetland + is a registered trademark of the remedial treatment technology consisting of an aerobic sedimentary tank, a permeable reactive barrier, a biosorption system, and an aerobic wetland. This proven method combines a reductive treatment known from PRBs with the natural wetland self-cleaning processes. The average efficiency of the system is 96.8% for chlorobenzenes (ClB) and 81.7% for HCH, during the first 12 months of the system operation. The presence of the genes encoding enzymes involved in the degradation of the HCH compounds indicates that the removal of HCH and ClB occurs not only by chemical removal but also through aerobic and anaerobic combining biodegradation. Changes in abundance and the composition of the diatom community were found to be suitable indicators of the water quality and of the impact of the Wetland + operation on the water ecosystem. The system's annual operation exhibited a markedly higher number of diatom species in the closing profiles of the Ostrovský Creek, the Wetland + effluent recipient.

Deciphering the kinetics and pathway of lindane biodegradation by novel soil ascomycete fungi for its implication in bioremediation

Lindane, an organochlorine pesticide, negatively affects living beings and the ecosystem. In this study, the potential of 9 Ascomycetes fungi, isolated from an hexachlorocyclohexane dumpsite soil, was tested for biodegradation of lindane. The strain Pleurostoma richardsiae (FN5) showed lindane biodegradation rate constant (K value) of 0.144 d-1 and a half-life of 4.8d. The formation of intermediate metabolites upon lindane degradation including γ-pentachlorocyclohexene, 2,4-dichlorophenol, phenol, benzene, 1,3- cyclohexadiene, and benzoic acid detected by GC-MS and the potential pathway adopted by the novel fungal strain FN5 for lindane biodegradation has been elucidated. The study of gene profiles with reference to linA and linB in strain FN5 confirmed the same protein family with the reported heterologs from other fungal strains in the NCBI database. This study for the first time provides a thorough understanding of lindane biodegradation by a novel soil-borne Ascomycota fungal strain for its possible application in field-scale bioremediation.

Reduced Antibiotic Resistance in the Rhizosphere of Lupinus albus in Mercury-Contaminated Soil Mediated by the Addition of PGPB

The emergence of antibiotic resistance (AR) poses a threat to the "One Health" approach. Likewise, mercury (Hg) pollution is a serious environmental and public health problem. Its ability to biomagnify through trophic levels induces numerous pathologies in humans. As well, it is known that Hg-resistance genes and AR genes are co-selected. The use of plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can improve plant adaptation, decontamination of toxic compounds and control of AR dispersal. The cenoantibiogram, a technique that allows estimating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a microbial community, has been postulated as a tool to effectively evaluate the evolution of a soil. The present study uses the metagenomics of 16S rRNA gene amplicons to understand the distribution of the microbial soil community prior to bacterial inoculation, and the cenoantibiogram technique to evaluate the ability of four PGPB and their consortia to minimize antibiotic resistance in the rhizosphere of Lupinus albus var. Orden Dorado grown in Hg-contaminated soils. Results showed that the addition of A1 strain (Brevibacterium frigoritolerans) and its consortia with A2, B1 and B2 strains reduced the edaphic community´s MIC against cephalosporins, ertapenem and tigecycline. The metagenomic study revealed that the high MIC of non-inoculated soils could be explained by the bacteria which belong to the detected taxa,. showing a high prevalence of Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria and Actinobacteria.

Development of immobilized novel fungal consortium for the efficient remediation of cyanide-contaminated wastewaters

Free cyanide is a hazardous pollutant released from steel industries. Environmentally-safe remediation of cyanide-contaminated wastewater is required. In this work, Pseudomonas stutzeri (ASNBRI_B12), Trichoderma longibrachiatum (ASNBRI_F9), Trichoderma saturnisporum (ASNBRI_F10) and Trichoderma citrinoviride (ASNBRI_F14) were isolated from blast-furnace wastewater and activated-sludge by enrichment culture. Elevated microbial growth, rhodanese activity (82 %) and GSSG (128 %) were observed with 20 mg-CN L^-1. Cyanide degradation > 99 % on 3rd d as evaluated through ion chromatography, followed by first-order kinetics (r² = 0.94-0.99). Cyanide degradation in wastewater (20 mg-CN L^-1, pH 6.5) was studied in ASNBRI_F10 and ASNBRI_F14 which displayed increased biomass to 49.7 % and 21.6 % respectively. Maximum cyanide degradation of 99.9 % in 48 h was shown by an immobilized consortium of ASNBRI_F10 and ASNBRI_F14. FTIR analysis revealed that cyanide treatment alters functional groups on microbial cell walls. The novel consortium of T. saturnisporum-T. citrinoviride in the form of immobilized culture can be employed to treat cyanide-contaminated wastewater.

Toxicity sharing model of earthworm intestinal microbiome reveals shared functional genes are more powerful than species in resisting pesticide stress

Earthworm intestinal bacteria and indigenous soil bacteria work closely during various biochemical processes and play a crucial role in maintaining the internal stability of the soil environment. However, the response mechanism of these bacterial communities to external pesticide disturbance is unknown. In this study, soil and earthworm gut contents were metagenomically sequenced after exposure to various concentrations of nitrochlorobenzene (0-1026.7 mg kg^-1). A high degree of similarity was found between the microbial community composition and abundance in the worm gut and soil, both of which decreased significantly (P < 0.05) under elevated pesticide stress. The toxicity sharing model (TSM) showed that the toxicity sharing capacity was 97.4-125.7 % and 100.4-130.2 % for E_genes (genes in the worm gut) and E_met(degradation genes in the worm gut) in the earthworm intestinal microbiome, respectively. This indicated that the earthworm intestinal microbiome assisted in relieving the pesticide toxicity of the indigenous soil microbiome. This study showed that the TSM could quantitatively describe the toxic effect of pesticides on the earthworm intestinal microbiome. It provides a new analytical model for investigating the ecological alliance between earthworm intestinal microbiome and indigenous soil microbiome under pesticide stress while contributing a more profound understanding of the potential to use earthworms to mitigate pesticide pollution in soils and develop earthworm-based soil remediation techniques.

Analysis of the Degradation of OCPs Contaminated Soil by the BC/nZVI Combined with Indigenous Microorganisms

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were typical persistent organic pollutants that posed great hazards and high risks in soil. In this study, a peanut shell biochar-loaded nano zero-valent iron (BC/nZVI) material was prepared in combination with soil indigenous microorganisms to enhance the degradation of α-hexachlorocyclohexane(α-HCH) and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane(γ-HCH) in water and soil. The effects of BC/nZVI on indigenous microorganisms in soil were investigated based on the changes in redox potential and dehydrogenase activity in the soil. The results showed as follows: (1) The specific surface area of peanut shell biochar loaded with nano-zero-valent iron was large, and the nano-zero-valent iron particles were evenly distributed on the peanut shell biochar; (2) peanut shell BC/nZVI had a good degradation effect on α-HCH and γ-HCH in water, with degradation rates of 64.18% for α-HCH and 91.87% for γ-HCH in 24 h; (3) peanut shell BC/nZVI also had a good degradation effect on α-HCH and γ-HCH in soil, and the degradation rates of α-HCH and γ-HCH in the 1% BC/nZVI reached 55.2% and 85.4%, second only to 1% zero-valent iron. The degradation rate was the fastest from 0 to 7 days, while the soil oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) increased sharply. (4) The addition of BC/nZVI to the soil resulted in a significant increase in dehydrogenase activity, which further promoted the degradation of HCHs; the amount of HCHs degradation was significantly negatively correlated with dehydrogenase activity. This study provides a remediation strategy for HCH-contaminated sites, reducing the human health risk of HCHs in the soil while helping to improve the soil and increase the activity of soil microorganisms.

Degradation Characteristics and Remediation Ability of Contaminated Soils by Using β-HCH Degrading Bacteria

Three degradation strains that can utilize β-Hexachlorocyclohexanes (β-HCH) as the sole carbon source were isolated from the soil substrate of constructed wetland under long-term β-HCH stress, and they were named A1, J1, and M1. Strains A1 and M1 were identified as Ochrobactrum sp. and strain J1 was identified as Microbacterium oxydans sp. by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The optimum conditions for degradation with these three strains, A1, J1, and M1, were pH = 7, 30 °C, and 5% inoculum amount, and the degradation rates of 50 μg/L β-HCH under these conditions were 58.33%, 51.96%, and 50.28%, respectively. Degradation characteristics experiments showed that root exudates could increase the degradation effects of A1 and M1 on β-HCH by 6.95% and 5.82%, respectively. In addition, the degradation bacteria A1 and J1 mixed in a ratio of 1:1 had the highest degradation rate of β-HCH, which was 69.57%. An experiment on simulated soil remediation showed that the compound bacteria AJ had the best effect on promoting the degradation of β-HCH in soil within 98 d, and the degradation rate of β-HCH in soil without root exudates was 60.22%, whereas it reached 75.02% in the presence of root exudates. The addition of degradation bacteria or degradation bacteria-root exudates during soil remediation led to dramatic changes in the community structure of the soil microorganisms, as well as a significant increase in the proportion of aerobic and Gram-negative bacterial groups. This study can enrich the resources of β-HCH degrading strains and provided a theoretical basis for the on-site engineering treatment of β-HCH contamination.

Contributions of Beneficial Microorganisms in Soil Remediation and Quality Improvement of Medicinal Plants

Medicinal plants (MPs) are important resources widely used in the treatment and prevention of diseases and have attracted much attention owing to their significant antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and other activities. However, soil degradation, caused by continuous cropping, excessive chemical fertilizers and pesticide residues and heavy metal contamination, seriously restricts the growth and quality formation of MPs. Microorganisms, as the major biota in soil, play a critical role in the restoration of the land ecosystem. Rhizosphere microecology directly or indirectly affects the growth and development, metabolic regulation and active ingredient accumulation of MPs. Microbial resources, with the advantages of economic efficiency, harmless to environment and non-toxic to organisms, have been recommended as a promising alternative to conventional fertilizers and pesticides. The introduction of beneficial microbes promotes the adaptability of MPs to adversity stress by enhancing soil fertility, inhibiting pathogens and inducing systemic resistance. On the other hand, it can improve the medicinal quality by removing soil pollutants, reducing the absorption and accumulation of harmful substances and regulating the synthesis of secondary metabolites. The ecological and economic benefits of the soil microbiome in agricultural practices are increasingly recognized, but the current understanding of the interaction between soil conditions, root exudates and microbial communities and the mechanism of rhizosphere microecology affecting the secondary metabolism of MPs is still quite limited. More research is needed to investigate the effects of the microbiome on the growth and quality of different medicinal species. Therefore, the present review summarizes the main soil issues in medicinal plant cultivation, the functions of microbes in soil remediation and plant growth promotion and the potential mechanism to further guide the use of microbial resources to promote the ecological cultivation and sustainable development of MPs.

Response of microbial community structure to chromium contamination in Panax ginseng-growing soil

Chromium (Cr) contamination in soil poses a serious security risk for the development of medicine and food with ginseng as the raw material. Microbiome are critical players in the functioning and service of soil ecosystems, but their feedback to Cr-contaminated ginseng growth is still poorly understood. To study this hypothesis, we evaluated the effects of microbiome and different Cr exposure on the soil microbial community using Illumina HiSeq high-throughput sequencing. Our results indicated that 2467 OTUs and 1785 OTUs were obtained in 16S and ITS1 based on 97% sequence similarity, respectively. Bacterial and fungal diversity were affected significantly in Cr-contaminated soil. Besides, Cr contamination significantly changed the composition of the soil bacterial and fungal communities, and some biomarkers were identified in the different classification level of the different Cr-contaminated treatments using LEfSe. Finally, a heatmap of Spearman's rank correlation coefficients and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) indicated that Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadetes, Acidobacteria, Verrucomicobia, and Parcubacteria in phylum level and Acidimicrobiia, Gemmatimonadetes, and Deltaproteobacteria in class level were positively correlated with AK, AP, and NO₃^--N (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01), but negatively correlated with total Cr and available Cr (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). Similarly, in the fungal community, Tubaria, Mortierellaceae, and Rhizophagus in the phylum level and Glomeromycetes, Agaricomycetes, and Exobasidiomycetes in the class level were positively correlated with AK, AP, and NO₃^--N (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01), but negatively correlated with total Cr and available Cr (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). Our findings provide new insight into the effects of Cr contamination on the microbial communities in ginseng-growing soil.

Ecotoxicological responses and removal of submerged macrophyte Hydrilla verticillate to multiple perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) pollutants in aquatic environments

The ubiquitous existence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in aquatic environments might pose toxic potential to ecosystems. To assess the ecotoxicological responses and removal of submerged macrophyte to multiple PFAA pollutants in aquatic environments, a typical submerged macrophyte, Hydrilla verticillate, was exposed to solutions with 12 typical PFAAs in the present study. The results showed that PFAAs at concentrations higher than 10 μg/L had significantly passive effects on biomass, relative growth rates, chlorophyll contents, and chlorophyll autofluorescence. PFAAs could induce the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation in H. verticillate. Significant upregulation of CAT was observed in treatments with more than 10 μg/L PFAAs (p < 0.05). The results also showed that 13.53-20.01% and 19.73-37.72% of PFAAs could be removed in treatments without plants and with H. verticillate, respectively. The removal rates of PFAAs were significantly correlated with perfluoroalkyl chain length in treatments with H. verticillate. The removal of PFAAs was suggested to be related to the uptake of plant tissues and biosorption of microbiota. Furthermore, the dominant microbiota and biomarkers were identified in water and biofilm. Betaproteobacteriales was the most dominant microbiota at the order level. The presence of PFAAs could significantly increase the relative abundance of Micrococcales, Verrucomicrobiales, Rhizobiales, Sphingomonadales, Roseomonas, Cyanobium_PCC_6307, and Synechococcales. Our results provide scientific basis for evaluating the ecotoxicological responses and removal of submerged macrophytes in response to multiple PFAA pollutants at environmentally relevant levels, thereby providing insights into PFAA management and removal.

Comparative Metagenomic Study of Rhizospheric and Bulk Mercury-Contaminated Soils in the Mining District of Almadén

Soil contamination by heavy metals, particularly mercury (Hg), is a problem that can seriously affect the environment, animals, and human health. Hg has the capacity to biomagnify in the food chain. That fact can lead to pathologies, of those which affect the central nervous system being the most severe. It is convenient to know the biological environmental indicators that alert of the effects of Hg contamination as well as the biological mechanisms that can help in its remediation. To contribute to this knowledge, this study conducted comparative analysis by the use of Shotgun metagenomics of the microbial communities in rhizospheric soils and bulk soil of the mining region of Almadén (Ciudad Real, Spain), one of the most affected areas by Hg in the world The sequences obtained was analyzed with MetaPhlAn2 tool and SUPER-FOCUS. The most abundant taxa in the taxonomic analysis in bulk soil were those of Actinobateria and Alphaproteobacteria. On the contrary, in the rhizospheric soil microorganisms belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria were abundant, evidencing that roots have a selective effect on the rhizospheric communities. In order to analyze possible indicators of biological contamination, a functional potential analysis was performed. The results point to a co-selection of the mechanisms of resistance to Hg and the mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics or other toxic compounds in environments contaminated by Hg. Likewise, the finding of antibiotic resistance mechanisms typical of the human clinic, such as resistance to beta-lactams and glycopeptics (vancomycin), suggests that these environments can behave as reservoirs. The sequences involved in Hg resistance (operon mer and efflux pumps) have a similar abundance in both soil types. However, the response to abiotic stress (salinity, desiccation, and contaminants) is more prevalent in rhizospheric soil. Finally, sequences involved in nitrogen fixation and metabolism and plant growth promotion (PGP genes) were identified, with higher relative abundances in rhizospheric soils. These findings can be the starting point for the targeted search for microorganisms suitable for further use in bioremediation processes in Hg-contaminated environments.

Effects of cadmium contamination on bacterial and fungal communities in Panax ginseng-growing soil

Background

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in soil poses a serious safety risk for the development of medicine and food with ginseng as the raw material. Microorganisms are key players in the functioning and service of soil ecosystems, but the effects of Cd-contaminated ginseng growth on these microorganisms is still poorly understood. To study this hypothesis, we evaluated the effects of microorganisms and Cd (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mg kg^-1 of Cd) exposure on the soil microbial community using Illumina HiSeq high-throughput sequencing.

Results

Our results indicated that Cd-contaminated soil affected the soil microbial diversity and composition, and bacterial diversity was affected more than fungal diversity in Cd-contaminated soil, especially according to Shannon indices. The abundance of the soil microbial community decreased and the composition changed according to the relative abundances at the phylum level, including those of Saccharibacteria and Gemmatimonadetes in bacteria and Mortierellomycota in fungi. The LEfSe algorithm was used to identify active biomarkers, and 45 differentially abundant bacterial taxonomic clades and 16 differentially abundant fungal taxonomic clades were identified with LDA scores higher than 4.0. Finally, a heatmap of Spearman's rank correlation coefficients and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) indicated that some key biomarkers, Arenimonas, Xanthomonadales, Nitrosomonadaceae, Methylophilales, Caulobacterales, Aeromicrobium, Chitinophagaceae, Acidimicrobiales, Nocardioidaceae, Propionibacteriales, Frankiales, and Gemmatimonadaceae, were positively correlated with the total and available Cd (p<0.05) but negatively correlated with AK, AP, and pH (p<0.05) in the bacterial community. Similarly, in the fungal community, Tubaria, Mortierellaceae, and Rhizophagus were positively correlated with the total and available Cd but negatively correlated with AK, AP, TK, and pH.

Conclusion

Cd contamination significantly affected microbial diversity and composition in ginseng-growing soil. Our findings provide new insight into the effects of Cd contamination on the microbial communities in ginseng-growing soil.

Co-application of nanosized halloysite and biochar as soil amendments in aided phytostabilization of metal(-oid)s-contaminated soil under different temperature conditions

The threat posed by the degradation of the soil environment by metal (-oid)s has been lead to the improvement of existing or search for new remediation methods; in this case, the application of environmentally friendly nanomaterials falls into this trend. The study applied a technique of aided phytostabilization for the immobilization of metal (-oid)s in soil with the application of nanosized halloysite and biochar (nBH), along with Lolium perenne L. Its effectiveness was assessed in terms of changing temperature conditions (16 cycles of freeze and thaw cycles, (FTC)) on the content of As, Cu, Pb and Zn in the soil, roots, and above-ground parts of the tested plant, chemical fraction distributions of metal (-oid)s and their stability (based on reduced partition index, I_r). The biomass yield in nBH-amended soil was 2-fold higher compared to control soil, but it decreased by 1.6-fold after FTC. nBH facilitated more bioaccumulation of As, Pb and Zn than Cu in plant roots, before than after FTC. nBH increased pH in phytostabilized soil, but it was not affected by changing FTC. In soil nBH-phytostabilized total concentration of metal (-oid)s significantly decreased compared to control soil, for As and Cu below permissible value, regardless of FTC. Soil amendment and changing temperature conditions affected metal (-oid)s redistribution in soil. As a result, the stability of As increased from 0.50 to 0.66, Cu from 0.49 to 0.52, Pb from 0.36 to 0.48 and Zn from 0.39 to 0.47. These findings suggest that nBH can immobilize metal (-oid)s in phytostabilized soil under changing temperature conditions.

Effects of Elevation and Distance from Highway on the Abundance and Community Structure of Bacteria in Soil along Qinghai-Tibet Highway

In recent years, highway construction in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) has developed rapidly. When the highway passes through grassland, the soil, vegetation, and ecological environment along the line are disturbed. However, the impact on soil bacteria is still unclear. Soil bacteria play an important role in the ecological environment. The Qinghai-Tibet Highway (QTH) was selected as the research object to explore the changes in bacterial community structure, vegetation, soil, and other indicators. The results showed that the highway-related activities increased the degradation of vegetation along the road, significantly changed the physical and chemical properties of soil, and caused heavy metal pollution. These environmental factors affected the diversity and community structure of soil bacteria. This kind of disturbance shows a trend of gradually increasing from near to far from the highway. Gemmatimonas, Terrimonas, Nitrospira and Bacillus are more tolerant to environmental changes along the highway, while Barnesiella, and Blastococcus are more sensitive. The content of nitrate decreased and the content of ammonium nitrogen increased in the disturbed area, increasing the abundance of nitrifying bacteria. Therefore, the main factor of the disturbance of the QTH on the grassland is the decline of soil nutrient content, and the supplement of soil nutrients such as carbon and nitrogen should be taken into account in the process of ecological restoration of grassland along the line.

Sustainable mitigation of heavy metals from effluents: Toxicity and fate with recent technological advancements

Increase in anthropogenic activities due to rapid industrialization had caused an elevation in heavy metal contamination of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. These pollutants have detrimental effects on human and environmental health. The majority of these pollutants are carcinogenic, neurotoxic, and are very poisonous even at very low concentrations. Contamination caused by heavy metals has become a global concern for which the traditional treatment approaches lack in providing a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution. Therefore, the use of microorganisms and plants to reduce the free available heavy metal present in the environment has become the most acceptable method by researchers. Also, in microbial- and phyto-remediation the redox reaction shifts the valence which makes these metals less toxic. In addition to this, the use of biochar as a remediation tool has provided a sustainable solution that needs further investigations toward its implementation on a larger scale. Enzymes secreted by microbes and whole microbial cell are considered an eco-efficient biocatalyst for mitigation of heavy metals from contaminated sites. To the best of our knowledge there is very less literature available covering remediation of heavy metals aspect along with the sensors used for detection of heavy metals. Systematic management should be implemented to overcome the technical and practical limitations in the use of these bioremediation techniques. The knowledge gaps have been identified in terms of its limitation and possible future directions have been discussed.

Impact of Soil Disinfestation on Fungal and Bacterial Communities in Soil With Cucumber Cultivation

Soil treatment with disinfectants has been used for controlling soilborne phytopathogens. Besides suppressing specific pathogens, how these disinfectants impact soil health, especially soil microbial communities, is yet to be systemically determined. The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of three representative disinfectants, including the dazomet fumigant, fenaminosulf fungicide, and kasugamycin antibiotic on chemical properties, enzymatic activities, and microbial communities in soil for cucumber cultivation. Results showed that 14 days after soil treatment with these chemicals, residual content of dazomet and kasugamycin quickly declined in soil and were undetectable, while fenaminosulf residues were found at 0.48 ± 0.01 mg/kg. Total nitrogen and total carbon increased in soil after dazomet treatment. Urease and sucrase activities were significantly restrained after disinfectant application. The disinfectants did not significantly change the taxon of predominant bacteria and fungi but altered the relative abundance and diversity of soil microbiome, as well as microbial interspecific relationships. Moreover, cucumber cultivation enhanced the overall soil microbial diversity and enzymatic activities, which diminished the difference of soil microbiome among four treatments. The difference in soil microbial diversity among the four treatments became smaller after planting cucumber. Thus, soil microbial communities were affected by soil disinfectants and gradually recovered by cucumber application.
