Full-chain analysis on emerging contaminants in soil: Source, migration and remediation

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are gaining attention due to their prevalence and potential negative impacts on the environment and human health. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the status and trends of soil pollution caused by ECs, focusing on their sources, migration pathways, and environmental implications. Significant ECs, including plastics, synthetic polymers, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, plasticizers, and flame retardants, are identified due to their widespread use and toxicity. Their presence in soil is attributed to agricultural activities, urban waste, and wastewater irrigation. The review explores both horizontal and vertical migration pathways, with factors such as soil type, organic matter content, and moisture levels influencing their distribution. Understanding the behavior of ECs in soil is critical to mitigating their long-term risks and developing effective soil remediation strategies. The paper also examines the advantages and disadvantages of in situ and ex situ treatment approaches for ECs, highlighting optimal physical, chemical, and biological treatment conditions. These findings provide a fundamental basis for addressing the challenges and governance of soil pollution induced by ECs.

The geochemical stability of typical arsenic-bearing sinter in the Tibetan plateau: Implications from quantitative mineralogy

High‑arsenic (As) sinter deposited from geothermal water is a potentially overlooked hazardous matrix and there remain substantial gaps in our comprehension of the stability of As sequestered within it. In this study, qualitative and quantitative analysis of the mineralogy of As-bearing sinter was conducted by Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) in geothermal areas of the Tibetan Plateau to reveal the geochemical stability of As. Our results indicated that the contents of As in sinter were 3 orders of magnitude higher than the local soil. The dominant host minerals of As were calcite (40.9 %), thenardite (22.5 %), calcium silicate (13.0 %), and halite (8.1 %). Additionally, it was found that a relatively higher As bioavailability was extracted by ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), with a leaching rate of 41.2 %. Notably, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the thenardite and halite were decomposed after the leaching. The combination of mineralogy and geochemistry data suggested that calcite and calcium silicate were a crucial mechanism for As retention in sinter, while the dissolution of saline minerals (e.g., thenardite, halite, and calcium chloride) served as the primary sources for As release. This finding unveils the potential risks and mechanisms associated with high-As sinter, providing scientific guidance for risk management of sinter.

A practical method for identifying key factors in the distribution and formation of heavy metal pollution at a smelting site

Smelting activities are the main pathway for the anthropogenic release of heavy metals (HMs) into the soil-groundwater environment. It is vital to identify the factors affecting HMs pollution to better prevent and manage soil pollution. The present study conducted a comprehensive investigation of HMs in soil from a large abandoned Zn smelting site. An integrated approach was proposed to classify and quantify the factors affecting HMs pollution in the site. Besides, the quantitative relationship between hydrogeological characteristics, pollution transmission pathways, smelting activities and HMs pollution was established. Results showed that the soils were highly contaminated by HMs with a pollution index trend of As > Zn > Cd > Pb > Hg. In identifying the pollution hotspots, we conclude that the pollution hotspots of Pb, As, Cd, and Hg present a concentrated distribution pattern. Geo-detector method results showed that the dominant driving factors for HMs distribution and accumulation were the potential pollution source and soil permeability. Additionally, the main drivers are variable for different HMs, and the interaction among factors also enhanced soil HMs contamination. Our analysis illustrates how the confounding influences from complex environmental factors can be distilled to identify key factors in pollution formation to guide future remediation strategies.

Effects of microwave and plastic content on the sulfur migration during co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic

In order to reduce the risks of sulfur-containing contaminants present in biofuels, the effects of microwave and content of hydrogen donor on the cracking of C-S bonds and the migration of sulfur were studied by co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic. The synergistic mechanism of microwave and hydrogen donor was explored from the perspective of deducing the evolution of sulfur-containing compounds based on microwave thermogravimetric analysis. By combining temperature-weight curves, it was found that microwaves and hydrogen radicals promoted the cracking of sulfur-containing compounds and increased the mass loss of biomass during pyrolysis. The mixing ratio of hydrogen donor (plastic) was the key parameter resulting in the removal of sulfur from oil. By adjusting the mixing ratio, the yield of co-pyrolyzed oil was three times higher than that of cow dung pyrolysis alone and the relative removal rate of sulfur reached 73.67%. The relative content of sulfur in the oil was reduced by 73.77% due to the escape of sulfur-containing gases (H₂S, COS and C₂H₅SH) and the formation of sulfate crystals in the char. Microwave selectively heated sulfur-containing organics and hydrogen radicals stimulated the breaking of C-S bonds, which improved the cracking efficiency of the oil. This breaking will provide a theoretical and technological reference for the environmentally friendly treatment of biomass and biofuels.

Effect of calcination temperatures on the performance of rectorite for cadmium immobilization in soil: Freeze-thaw, plant growth, and microbial diversity

The immobilization of cadmium (Cd(II)) in soil using calcined rectorite (REC) was investigated in this research. The results of immobilization show that a small amount of REC calcined at 700 °C (REC-700 °C) could effectively immobilize 90% of Cd(II) in soil, while the immobilization efficiency of REC only reached 42%. Moreover, the immobilization efficiency of REC calcined at 300 °C and 500 °C (REC-300 °C and REC-500 °C) were lower than REC. To investigate the mechanism, the materials before and after immobilization were fully analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powdery X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the structure of REC has been changed after calcination at different temperatures and Cd(II) was successfully immobilized on materials. Losing free water, structural water and OH groups respectively, the layer spacing of REC-300 °C and REC-500 °C was shrunk. However, the crystal structure of REC was destroyed after calcination at 700 °C, resulting in the generation of new phases. According to the XRD result, more cadmium hydroxide (Cd(OH)₂) were produced on REC-700 °C, indicating that more OH groups were formed during immobilization. Furthermore, Tessier test demonstrates that Cd(II) in soil changed from exchangeable state and water soluble state to carbonate bound state and iron manganese oxide bound state during immobilization. The result of microbial community indicates that REC-700 °C can restore the microbial composition of Cd(II)-contaminated soil. The effects of pH, freeze-thaw, REC dosage, and initial heavy metal concentration were also evaluated to provide a theoretical basis for the subsequent application of the material in the remediation of contaminated soil.

Development of chitosan-magnetic sawdust hydrochar for Pb and Zn immobilization process on various soil conditions

A series of 60-day soil immobilized incubations were performed to explore the impacts of various factors (incubation time, chitosan modified magnetic sawdust hydrochar (CMSH) dosages, initial pH values, moisture contents, and humic acid (HA)) on CMSH immobilization of Pb and Zn. DTPA and BCR extraction techniques were undertaken to study the distribution of form transformations of Pb and Zn. CMSH showed significant immobilization ability for both DTPA-Pb and DTPA-Zn, and the highest removal rates were shown to be 57.40% and 90.00% for Pb and Zn respectively. After 60 days of incubation, the residual Pb was enhanced by 34-61% and residual Zn increased by 25-41%, which indicated that CMSH was effective in immobilizing Pb and Zn. Meanwhile, the immobilization efficiency improved with increasing incubation time, CMSH dosage, HA dosage, and initial solution pH. In particular, 5% HA application increased the soil TOC and accelerated the metal stabilization processes, with the residual forms of Pb and Zn eventually reaching a maximum of 73% and 71%, respectively. In addition, the alkaline initial solution promoted the ion exchange, surface complexation reaction, and cationic-π interaction, resulting in a better immobilization of Pb and Zn by CMSH. Finally, according to the orthogonal analysis of BCR results, HA dosage was the major factor affecting Pb and Zn immobilization by CMSH compared to soil pH and moisture content in this study.

Variations in Hydraulic Conductivity of Montmorillonite in Dual-Cation Electrolyte Solutions

The hydraulic conductivity of Na-montmorillonite in dual-cation solutions of Na⁺ and Mⁿ⁺ (Mⁿ⁺ = K⁺, Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Al³⁺) with a constant ionic strength of 0.1 mol/L was determined. The focus of this study was on the influence of Mⁿ⁺ on the grain-size distribution of montmorillonite and hence its hydraulic conductivity. All the tested cations showed a high affinity towards montmorillonite, and the high valency favored the exchange between Mⁿ⁺ and Na⁺. The hydraulic conductivity of montmorillonite increased to the maxima and then decreased in a left-skewed log-normal shape as the cation exchange progressed. The grain size of montmorillonite concurrently decreased monotonically with the cation exchange. The XRD patterns of montmorillonite confirmed the occurrence of demixing of Na⁺ and K⁺ in the interlayers. It is proposed that the rearrangement and reaggregation of grains during cation exchange occurred, leading to variations in the hydraulic conductivity of montmorillonite.
