Trimetallic CuO/Ag/NiO supported with silica nanoparticles based composite materials for green hydrogen production

Production and utilization of grey and blue hydrogen is responsible for emission of millions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) across the globe. This increased emission of CO2 has severe repercussions on the planet earth and in particular on climate change. Here in, we explored advance bimetallic (BM) CuO/Ag and trimetallic (TM) CuO/Ag/NiO based nanoporous materials supported with silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) via sol-gel route. The explored nanocatalysts were characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmittance electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Raman spectroscopic techniques. These advance nanocatalysts were evaluated for the green hydrogen production through electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. The catalysts exhibited an exceptional catalytic performance, the onset potential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was determined to be - 0.9 V BMSiNPs-GCE and - 0.7 V (vs Ag/AgCl) for TMSiNPs-GCE, whereas η@10 for BMSiNPs-GCE and TMSiNPs-GCE is - 1.26 and - 1.00 V respectively. Significantly, the TMSiNPs composite and the BMSiNPs composite exhibited superior photochemical H2 evolution rates of 1970.72 mmol h-1 g-1 and 1513.97 mmol h-1 g-1, respectively. The TMSiNPs catalyst presents a highly promising material for HER. This study reveals a cost-effective approach to develop sustainable and resourceful electrocatalysts for HER.

Synthesis of Trimetallic Nanoparticle (NiCoPd)-Supported Carbon Nanofibers as a Catalyst for NaBH4 Hydrolysis

The generation of H2 via the catalytic hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (SBH) has promise as a practical and secure approach to produce H2, a secure and environmentally friendly energy source for the foreseeable future. In this study, distinctive trimetallic NiCoPd nanoparticle-supported carbon nanofibers (NiCoPd tri-NPs@CNFs) is synthesized via sol-gel and electrospinning approaches. The fabricated trimetallic catalysts show an excellent catalytic performance for the generation of H2 from the hydrolysis of SBH. Standard physicochemical techniques were used to characterize the as-prepared NiCoPd tri-NPs@CNFs. The results show that NiCoPd tri-NPs@CNFs is formed, with an average particle size of about 21 nm. When compared to NiCo bimetallic NP @CNFS, all NiCoPd tri-NPs@CNFs formulations demonstrated greater catalytic activates for the hydrolysis of SBH. The improved catalytic activity may be due in the majority to the synergistic interaction between the three metals in the trimetallic architecture. Furthermore, the activation energy for the catalytic hydrolysis of SBH by the NiCoPd tri-NPs@CNFs was determined to be 16.30 kJ mol-1. The kinetics studies show that the reaction is of a first order with respect to the catalyst loading amount and a half order with respect to the SBH concentration [SBH].

Ferrocene anchored activated carbon as a versatile catalyst for the synthesis of 1,5-benzodiazepines via one-pot environmentally benign conditions

1,5-Benzodiazepine is considered as one of the central moieties in the core unit of most drug molecules. Construction of such moieties with a new C–N bond under solvent-free and mild reaction conditions is challenging. Herein, we present a benign protocol for one pot synthesis of 1,5-benzodiazepine derivatives by using ferrocene (FC) supported activated carbon (AC) as a heterogeneous catalyst. The catalyst FC/AC was characterized by several analytical and spectroscopic techniques to reveal its physicochemical properties and for structural confirmation. The synthesized catalyst FC/AC was explored for its catalytic activity in the synthesis of 1,5-benzodiazepines through condensation of o-phenylenediamine (OPDA) and ketones (aromatic and aliphatic) under solvent-free conditions. The robust 10 wt% FC/AC catalyst demonstrated appreciable activity with 99% conversion of diamines and 91% selectivity towards the synthesis of the desired benzodiazepine derivatives under solvent-free conditions at 90 °C in 8 h. Additionally, several reaction parameters such as catalyst loading, reaction temperature, effect of reaction time and effect of different solvents on selectivity were also studied and discussed in-depth. To understand the scope of the reaction, several symmetrical and unsymmetrical ketones along with different substituted diamines were tested with the synthesized catalyst. All prepared reaction products were obtained in good to efficient yields and were isolated and identified as 1,5-benzodiazepines and no side products were observed. The obtained catalyst characterization data and the activity studies suggested that, the synergetic effect occurred due to the uniform dispersion of ferrocene over the AC surface with numerous acidic sites which triggered the reaction of diamine and ketone to form the corresponding benzodiazepine derivative and the same was illustrated in the plausible mechanism. Furthermore, the synthesized catalyst was tested for leaching and recyclability, and the results confirmed that catalyst can be used for up to six consecutive cycles without much loss in the catalytic activity and its morphology which makes the process sustainable and economical for scale-up production. The present method offered several advantages such as an ecofriendly method, excellent yields, sustainable catalytic transformation, easy work-up and isolation of products, and quick recovery of catalyst.
