Alkaline fermentation of refinery waste activated sludge mediated by refinery spent caustic for volatile fatty acids production

Volatile fatty acids (VFA), produced from waste activated sludge (WAS), provide unique opportunities for resource recovery in wastewater treatment plants. This study investigates the potential of refinery spent caustic (RSC) on VFA production during refinery WAS (RWAS) alkaline fermentation. The highest VFA yield was 196.3 mg/g-VS at a sludge retention time of 6 days. Amplicon sequencing revealed the enrichment of Soehngenia (20.21%), Bacilli (11.86%), and Brassicibacter (4.17%), which was associated with improved activities of protease (626%) and α-glucosidase (715%). Function prediction analysis confirmed that acetyl-CoA production and fatty acid biosynthesis were enhanced, while fatty acid degradation was inhibited. Accordingly, hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and acetogenesis were improved by 6.87%, 10.67%, and 28.50%, respectively; whereas methanogenesis was inhibited by 28.87%. The sulfate and free ammonia in RSC likely contributed to increased acetic acid production. This study showcases that RWAS alkaline fermentation mediated by RSC for VFA production is the practicable approach.

Sulphonated graphene catalyst incorporation with sludge enhanced the microbial activities for biomethanization of crude rice straw

Biomethanization of crude rice straw (RS) was enhanced by a coupled effectiveness of sulphonated graphene (SGR) with sludge rich anaerobes (SRA). A reduction of 19.2 ± 1.32% for cellulose, 40.8 ± 3.7% for hemicellulose and 30.8 ± 2.4% for lignin was achieved with addition of SRA after fermentation of 60 days. The abundance of hydrolytic microbes in SRA i.e. Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi and Proteobacteria caused RS structure liquefaction and dissolution. The reduction of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin boosted to 92.3 ± 1.5, 84.9 ± 3.5 and 97.0 ± 1.8% respectively with SGR catalyst addition of 100 mg/gVS. Reducing sugars, phenols and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were subsequently utilized by bacteria and archaea species of Methanosphaera, Methanocella, Candidatus Methanoregula, Methanolinea and Methanosaeta. The biogas yield was 92 ± 3.1 mL/gRS and methane content amounted to 68 ± 4.6% % at SGR catalyst of 80 mg/gVS. These findings show the potential of using SRA/SGR to improve the RS fermentation with a novel application for biogas productivity.

Effects of pH Adjustment on the Release of Carbon Source of Particulate Organic Matter (POM) in Domestic Sewage

The use of anaerobic hydrolytic fermentation to develop more available carbon sources from domestic sewage influent particulate organic matter (POM) has received increasing attention. However, the slow hydrolysis rate of POM limits the application of this technology. This study aimed to improve the carbon source release efficiency of POM by pH adjustment and to reveal the hydrolysis mechanism. Results showed that adjusting the initial pH of POM to 3, 9, and 11 enhanced carbon source release in the anaerobic hydrolysis fermentation process of POM. The pretreatment under pH value of 11 contributed to the highest yield and productivity of carbon source, reaching the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) of 2782 mg/L at the 4th day. The pH 3 pretreatment was more beneficial for phosphorus resource recovery, which contributed to the highest release concentration of PO43−-P, reaching 48.2 mg/L at the 3rd day, accounting for 90% of TP. Microbial community structure analysis indicated that pH 11 preconditioning promoted the enrichment of proteolytic bacteria (Proteocatella and Proteiniclasticum) and polysaccharide hydrolytic bacteria (Trichococcus and Acinetobacter) and inhibited the growth of acetate-consuming methanogenic archaea, which contributed to the highest carbon release of POM in domestic sewage.

Deciphering the key operational factors and microbial features associated with volatile fatty acids production during paper wastes and sewage sludge co-fermentation

This work explored the feasibility of paper waste (PW)/sewage sludge (SS) co-fermentation for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production, and disclosed its correlation with the key operational parameters (i.e., pH and PW/SS ratio). The results indicated that the maximal VFAs was 251.55 mg COD/g TSS at optimal conditions, which was approximately 10-folds of sole SS fermentation. PW feeding contributed to the bioavailable substrates and C/N balance during co-fermentation process. The pH exhibited evident impacts on organics solubilization/hydrolysis, in which acidic pH was more beneficial for carbohydrates metabolism while alkaline pH was better for proteins. Under optimal operational conditions, the metabolic functions associated with VFAs production (i.e., substrate membrane transport, intracellular metabolism and VFAs biosynthesis) were up-regulated. Moreover, functional microorganisms (i.e., Saccharofermentans and Bacteroides) responsible for VFAs generation were enriched. This work provided an innovative approach to recovery valuable products from biowastes, and in-depth understandings of microbial features in PW/SS co-fermentation systems.
