Hydroxyl regulating effect on surface structure of BiOBr photocatalyst toward high-efficiency degradation performance

WO3/BiOBr S-Scheme Heterojunction Photocatalyst for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The photocatalytic CO2 reduction strategy driven by visible light is a practical way to solve the energy crisis. However, limited by the fast recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in photocatalysts, photocatalytic efficiency is still low. Herein, a WO3/BiOBr S-scheme heterojunction was formed by combining WO3 with BiOBr, which facilitated the transfer and separation of photoinduced electrons and holes and enhanced the photocatalytic CO2 reaction. The optimized WO3/BiOBr heterostructures exhibited best activity for photocatalytic CO2 reduction without any sacrificial reagents, and the CO yield reached 17.14 μmol g-1 after reaction for 4 h, which was 1.56 times greater than that of BiOBr. The photocatalytic stability of WO3/BiOBr was also improved.

Bacterial cellulose flakes loaded with Bi2MoO6 nanoparticles and quantum dots for the photodegradation of antibiotic and dye pollutants

Effective strategies to improve charge separation in semiconductor particles are critical for improving the photodegradation of organic pollutants at levels sufficient for environmental applications. Herein, Bi₂MoO₆ (BMO_MOF), comprising both nanoparticles (NPs) and quantum dots (QDs), was synthesized from a bismuth-based metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF) precursor. Surface defects on BMO_MOF, the combination of NPs and QDs, and modified energy band edges improved photogenerated charge separation and facilitated redox reactions. When compared to BMO derived from uncoordinated Bi, the BMO_MOF photocatalyst (PC) was more efficient at photodegrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), two widely-used antibiotics ubiquitous in wastewater, as well as the carcinogenic pollutant rhodamine B (RhB). BMO_MOF was then loaded on the biopolymer bacterial cellulose (BC) to further enhance photocatalytic performance and facilitate the recovery of the PC after water treatment processes. The novel BMO_MOF/BC photocatalytic flakes were significantly larger than pure BMO_MOF, and thus easier to recuperate. Furthermore, anchoring BMO_MOF on BC flakes augmented significantly the photodegradation of TCH, CIP, and RhB, mainly because hydroxyl groups in BC act as hole traps facilitating photogenerated electron-hole separation. Results obtained with BMO_MOF/BC highlight promising approaches to develop optimal PCs for aqueous pollutants degradation.

Controlled preparation of Bi/BiOCl with enhanced catalytic activity for organic pollutant under visible light using one-pot hydrothermal technology

Flowerlike Bi/BiOCl was prepared by one-pot hydrothermal method, where Bi(NO₃)₃ was used as Bi source, NiCl₂ was used as employed as Cl source and co-catalyst, DMF was adopted as cosolvent and reducing agent. In the presence of NiCl₂, the reduction of Bi(NO₃)₃ was accelerated. The prepared conditions were optimized. The prepared Bi/BiOCl showed high photocatalytic activity for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation within 200 s under visible light irradiation. The degradation efficiency and degradation reaction rate for Bi/BiOCl were 98.7% and 1.194 min ^-1, which was significantly better than that of BiOCl (6.6% and 0.0240 min ^-1). The improvement of photocatalytic activity was attributed to the successful in-situ formation of Bi metal in the sample, which greatly improved the visible light activity of BiOCl, increased the transfer rate of the photogenerated electron, and inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The prepared Bi/BiOCl presented high cyclic stability and low Bi element leakage of 1.2 ng L^-1. The conversion of N element in RhB was preliminarily studied, and the results showed that N element was effectively converted into ammonium. Moreover, the decreased toxicity after RhB degradation was investigated and confirmed by mung bean cultivation with RhB solution before and after degradation.

Halides and oxyhalides-based photocatalysts for abatement of organic water contaminants - An overview

Recently, halides (silver halides, AgX; perosvkite halides, ABX₃) and oxyhalides (bismuth oxyhalides, BiOX) based nanomaterials are noticeable photocatalysts in the degradation of organic water pollutants. Therefore, we review the recent reports to explore improvement strategies adopted in AgX, ABX₃ and BiOX (X = Cl, Br and I)-based photocatalysts in water pollution remediation. Herein, the photocatalytic degradation performances of each type of these photocatalysts were discussed. Strategies such as tailoring the morphology, crystallographic facet exposure, surface area, band structure, and creation of surface defects to improve photocatalytic activities of pure halides and BiOCl photocatalysts are emphasized. Other strategies like metal ion and/or non-metal doping and construction of composites, adopted in these photocatalysts were also reviewed. Furthermore, the way of production of active radicals by these photocatalysts under ultraviolet/visible light source is highlighted. The deciding factors such as structure of pollutant, light sources and other parameters on the photocatalytic performances of these materials were also explored. Based on this literature survey, the need of further research on AgX, ABX₃ and BiOX-based photocatalysts were suggested. This review might be beneficial for researchers who are working in halides and oxyhalides-based photocatalysis for water treatment.

Degradation and detoxification of broad-spectrum antibiotics by small molecular intercalated BiOCl under visible light

In view of the increasing threat of overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics to water environment, here, a series of small molecular intercalated bismuth oxychloride (SBC-X) composite photocatalysts were successfully constructed by a simple stirring synthesis at room temperature. Among them, SBC-0.5 showed excellent photocatalytic performance against the three target broad-spectrum antibiotics in visible light, which was 3.06 times, 5.93 times and 11.64 times higher than that of monomer for degrading tetracycline, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin, respectively. Through analysis, it was found that the excellent photocatalytic degradation performance of SBC-0.5 was mainly attributed to the greatly improved specific surface area, which increased to 14 times of monomer, providing a large number of reaction sites for the subsequent photocatalytic degradation. Besides, intercalated molecules as charge transfer bridges between nanosheets greatly accelerated the efficiency of photogenerated charge transfer between layers. Free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance indicated that superoxide anion radicals played a major role in the photocatalytic degradation, followed by singlet oxygen. Furthermore, nine potential degradation intermediates were identified, and the toxicity was greatly reduced confirmed by ECOSAR software prediction and soybean seed germination and seeding growth experiment. Our work will provide useful information for the purification of wastewater containing antibiotics.

Construction of 2D layered phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride/BiOBr heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalytic disinfection

Infectious diseases caused by bacteria intimidate the health of human beings all over the world. Although many avenues have been tried, various operating conditions limit their actual applications. Photocatalytic nanomaterials are becoming candidates to be competent for water purification. Here, a novel and more efficient S-scheme has been engineered between two dimensional (2D) layered phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride (P-g-C 3 N 4 ) and BiOBr via hydrothermal polymerization to inhibit the recombination of charge and broaden light absorption. The as-prepared P-g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr hybrids exhibits significantly improved photocatalytic disinfection contrast to g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr in visible wavelengths, suggesting phosphorus doping which adjusts the band structure plays a significant role in the S-scheme system. And the sterilization rate of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii 28 ( AB 28 ) was 99.9999% within 80 min and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) was 99.9%.
