Comparison of Zn-Al and Mg-Al layered double hydroxides for adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid

Application of cobalt-cerium-iron ternary layered double hydroxide for extraction of perfluorooctane sulfonate followed by HPLC-MS/MS analysis

Herein, Ce-doped CoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH), noted as CoCeFe ternary LDH, was prepared using the co-precipitation route. Prosperous synthesis of CoFe LDH and successful partial replacement of iron cations with cerium cations in CoCeFe ternary LDH were confirmed by X-ray diffraction patterns, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and elemental dot-mapping images. Nanosheet morphology was recognized for both CoFe LDH and CoCeFe ternary LDH from scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy micrographs. In the following, a dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) method was developed using the synthesized CoCeFe ternary LDH as a sorbent for extracting perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) from wastewater samples. For the selective analysis of PFOS, high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (HPLC-MS/MS) in multiple reaction monitoring mode was used. Analytical parameters such as the limit of detection equal to 0.02 μg/L, with a linear range of 0.05-300 μg/L, the limit of quantification equal to 0.05 μg/L, and an enrichment factor equal to 23.3 were achieved for PFOS at the optimized condition (sorbent: 5 mg of CoCeFe ternary LDH, eluent type and volume: 150 μL mobile phase, pH: 3, adsorption time: 3 min, and desorption time: 5 min). The developed strategy for the analysis of PFOS was tested in real wastewater samples, including copper mine and petrochemical wastewater. The amount of analytes in real samples was calculated using the standard addition method, and good relative recovery in the range of 86%-105% was obtained. The main novelty of this research is the application of CoCeFe ternary LDH to extract the PFOS from wastewater using the DSPE method for determination by HPLC-MS/MS.

Removal of PFAS by hydrotalcite: Adsorption mechanisms, effect of adsorbent aging, and thermal regeneration

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) have been shown to be effective adsorbents, but their utility for the treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water has not been fully explored. In this study, the adsorption of 9 PFAS on hydrotalcite (HT), a type of LDH, was investigated using reaction solutions with environmentally relevant PFAS concentrations. The adsorption of individual PFAS by HT depended upon a range of factors, including the temperature used to pre-treat (i.e., calcine) the HT, aging conditions, and the presence of anions in the solution. HT calcined near 400 °C most effectively adsorbed PFAS, but its ability to adsorb PFAS was sensitive to storage conditions. The adsorption of CO2 and moisture from air, which likely resulted in the re-intercalation of CO32- into the interlayer regions of HT, was observed to reduce PFAS adsorption and may explain performance loss over time. The adsorption trend among 9 PFAS and the influence on this process by Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, and CO32- indicated that adsorption occurred via a combination of ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and hydrophobic interactions, although the relative importance of each mechanism deserves further investigation. During this study, we also demonstrated for the first time that HT can be thermally regenerated at 400 °C without affecting its ability to adsorb PFOS and PFBA. Overall, our results suggest that HT may serve as an effective alternative for PFAS treatment.

Adsorption of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by ionic liquid-modified clays: Effect of clay composition and PFAS structure

Organically modified clays have been reported as a promising class of adsorbents for the treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of emerging contaminants of widespread concerns. Here, we reported the development and evaluation of ionic liquid (IL)-modified clays prepared with various natural clays to explore the role of clay substrate in the adsorption of eight persistent perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs). Based on detailed adsorption isotherm study, we found that the adsorption capacities of PFAAs were closely related to the cation exchange capacities of the raw clays and correspondingly the IL loadings of the modified clays. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between the adsorption affinity of PFAAs onto IL-modified clays and the octanol-water distribution coefficient (Dow) of PFAAs. Adsorption free energy analysis suggested that both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions played important roles in the adsorption of PFAAs onto IL-modified clays. Although electrostatic interactions were more predominant, the contribution of hydrophobic interactions increased with the increasing carbon number of perfluoroalkyl moiety of PFAAs, resulting in more favorable adsorption of long-chain PFAAs than their short-chain homologs. The performance of IL-modified clays was further demonstrated for the removal of PFAA mixtures under environmentally relevant conditions. Overall, results of this work can provide important insights into guiding the design of organically modified clay adsorbents for PFAS treatment.

Adsorption of perfluorooctanoic carboxylic and heptadecafluorooctane sulfonic acids via magnetic chitosan: isotherms and modeling

This paper evaluates the adsorption mechanism of perfluorooctanoic carboxylic acid (PFCA) and heptadecafluorooctane sulfonic acid (HFOSA) on magnetic chitosan for the first time via a statistical physics modeling. Magnetic chitosan (MC-CoFe2O4) was produced from shrimp wastes and used in standard batch adsorption systems to remove PFCA and HFOSA. The experimental isotherms indicated that the maximum adsorption capacities ranged from 14 to 27.12 mg/g and from 19.16 to 45.12 mg/g for PFCA and HFOSA, respectively, where an exothermic behavior was observed for both compounds. The adsorption data were studied via an advanced model hypothesizing that a multilayer process occurred for these adsorption systems. This theoretical approach indicated that the total number of formed layers of PFCA and HFOSA adsorbates is about 3 (Nt = 2.83) at high temperatures (328 K) where a molecular aggregation process was noted during the adsorption. The maximum saturation-multilayer adsorption of PFCA and HFOSA on magnetic chitosan was 30.77 and 50.26 mg/g, respectively, and the corresponding adsorption mechanisms were successfully investigated. Two energies were responsible for the formed adsorbate layer directly on the surface and the vertical layers were computed and interpreted, reflecting that physical interactions were involved to bind these molecules on the adsorbent surface at different temperatures where the calculated adsorption energies ranged from 14 to 31 kJ/mol. Overall, this work provides theoretical insights to understand the adsorption mechanism of PFCA and HFOSA using the statistical physics modeling and its results can be used to improve the adsorbent performance for engineering applications.

An overview on human exposure, toxicity, solid-phase microextraction and adsorptive removal of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) from water matrices

Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) are sub-class of perfluoroalkyl substances commonly detected in water matrices. They are persistent in the environment, hence highly toxic to living organisms. Their occurrence at trace amount, complex nature and prone to matrix interference make their extraction and detection a challenge. This study consolidates current advancements in solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques for the trace-level analysis of PFCAs from water matrices. The advantages of the methods in terms of ease of applications, low-cost, robustness, low solvents consumption, high pre-concentration factors, better extraction efficiency, good selectivity and recovery of the analytes have been emphasized. The article also demonstrated effectiveness of some porous materials for the adsorptive removal of the PFCAs from the water matrices. Mechanisms of the SPE/adsorption techniques have been discussed. The success and limitations of the processes have been elucidated.

Enhanced adsorption of short-chain perfluorobutanoic acid by functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica: Performance and mechanisms

Removal of short-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represents a unique challenge in comparison to the long-chain homologs. In this study, a series of functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials with tunable molar ratio of fluoroalkyl to amine functional groups were developed and used as platform adsorbents to investigate the adsorption behavior of short-chain PFAS, with a focus on perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA). Modification with fluoroalkyl group substantially enhanced the adsorption affinity of PFBA with the functionalized PMO materials. Adsorption free energy analysis suggested that although electrostatic interactions were more predominant in PFBA adsorption, modification of PMOs with increased fluoroalkyl group loadings increased the non-electrostatic interactions with PFBA, resulting in more favorable PFBA adsorption. The optimal functionalized PMO showed fast PFBA adsorption kinetics, excellent PFBA removal efficiency in various water chemistry conditions, and can be regenerated and reused for numerous cycles with methanol/water mixture containing 500-mM NH₃·H₂O as regenerant. Furthermore, the optimal functionalized PMO showed robust performance for the removal of PFAS mixtures under complex natural water matrix. Results of this study suggested the important role of non-electrostatic interactions in enhancing the removal of short-chain PFAS and can provide mechanistic insights into guiding the design of improved adsorbents for PFAS removal.

Multifunctional Cross-Linked Shrimp Waste-Derived Chitosan/MgAl-LDH Composite for Removal of As(V) from Wastewater and Antibacterial Activity

This work synthesized a novel chitosan-loaded MgAl-LDH (LDH = layered double hyroxide) nanocomposite, which was physicochemically characterized, and its performance in As(V) removal and antimicrobial activity was evaluated. Chitosan-loaded MgAl-LDH nanocomposite (CsC@MgAl-LDH) was prepared using cross-linked natural chitosan from shrimp waste and modified by Mg-Al. The main mechanisms predominating the separation of As(V) were elucidated. The characteristic changes confirming MgAl-LDH modification with chitosan were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements. Porosity and the increased surface area play an important role in arsenic adsorption and microbial activity. Adsorption kinetics follows the general order statistically confirmed by Bayesian Information Criterion differences. To understand the adsorption process, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Liu isotherms were studied at three different temperatures. It was found that Liu's isotherm model was the best-fitted model. CsC@MgAl-LDH showed the maximum adsorption capacity of 69.29 mg g^-1 toward arsenic at 60 °C. It was observed that the adsorption capacity of the material rose with the increase in temperature. The spontaneous behavior and endothermic nature of adsorption was confirmed by the thermodynamic parameters study. Minimal change in percentage removal was observed with coexisting ions. The regeneration of material and adsorption-desorption cycles revealed that the adsorbent is economically efficient. The nanocomposite was very effective against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilus.

A review of PFAS adsorption from aqueous solutions: Current approaches, engineering applications, challenges, and opportunities

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have drawn great attention due to their wide distribution in water bodies and toxicity to human beings. Adsorption is considered as an efficient treatment technique for meeting the increasingly stringent environmental and health standards for PFAS. This paper systematically reviewed the current approaches of PFAS adsorption using different adsorbents from drinking water as well as synthetic and real wastewater. Adsorbents with large mesopores and high specific surface area adsorb PFAS faster, their adsorption capacities are higher, and the adsorption process are usually more effective under low pH conditions. PFAS adsorption mechanisms mainly include electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, anion exchange, and ligand exchange. Various adsorbents show promising performances but challenges such as requirements of organic solvents in regeneration, low adsorption selectivity, and complicated adsorbent preparations should be addressed before large scale implementation. Moreover, the aid of decision-making tools including response surface methodology (RSM), techno-economic assessment (TEA), life cycle assessment (LCA), and multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) were discussed for engineering applications. The use of these tools is highly recommended prior to scale-up to determine if the specific adsorption process is economically feasible and sustainable. This critical review presented insights into the most fundamental aspects of PFAS adsorption that would be helpful to the development of effective adsorbents for the removal of PFAS in future studies and provide opportunities for large-scale engineering applications.

Multiple interactions steered high affinity toward PFAS on ultrathin layered rare-earth hydroxide nanosheets: Remediation performance and molecular-level insights

The global occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic systems has raised concerns about their adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Adsorption is a promising technique for the remediation of PFAS, yet effective adsorbents with rapid uptake kinetics and high adsorption capacity are still in high demand, and molecular-level understanding of the interfacial adsorption mechanisms is lacking. In this study, we developed a superior layered rare-earth hydroxide (LRH) adsorbent, ultrathin Y₂(OH)_4.86Cl_1.44·1·07H₂O (namely YOHCl) nanosheets, to achieve the effective removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). YOHCl nanosheets exhibited ultra-high adsorption capacity toward PFOA (up to 957.1 mg/g), which is 1.9 times and 9.3 times higher than the state-of-the-art layered double hydroxides (MgAl-LDH) and benchmark granular activated carbon (GAC) under the same conditions, respectively. Furthermore, YOHCl nanosheets pose stable performance on the removal of PFOA under various water matrices with robust reusability. We also developed YOHCl-based continuous-flow column, demonstrating its promise in simultaneously removing multiple PFAS with wide range of chain lengths at environmentally relevant concentrations. With the molecular-level investigations, we have revealed that multi-mechanism, including ion exchange, electrostatic attraction and bidentate/bridging coordination, contributed to the strong PFOA-YOHCl affinity, leading to the ultra-high adsorption capacity of PFOA. We have provided emerging LRHs-based adsorbents for the effective remediation of PFAS with molecular-level insights on the interfacial mechanisms.

Regulation of Structure and Anion-Exchange Performance of Layered Double Hydroxide: Function of the Metal Cation Composition of a Brucite-like Layer

As anion-exchange materials, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted increasing attention in the fields of selective adsorption and separation, controlled drug release, and environmental remediation. The metal cation composition of the laminate is the essential factor that determines the anion-exchange performance of LDHs. Herein, we review the regulating effects of the metal cation composition on the anion-exchange properties and LDH structure. Specifically, the internal factors affecting the anion-exchange performance of LDHs were analyzed and summarized. These include the intercalation driving force, interlayer domain environment, and LDH morphology, which significantly affect the anion selectivity, anion-exchange capacity, and anion arrangement. By changing the species, valence state, size, and mole ratio of the metal cations, the structural characteristics, charge density, and interlayer spacing of LDHs can be adjusted, which affect the anion-exchange performance of LDHs. The present challenges and future prospects of LDHs are also discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review to summarize the essential relationship between the metal ion composition and anion-exchange performance of laminates, providing important insights for regulating the anion-exchange performance of LDHs.

Surfactant modified waste ash for the removal of chloro and nitro group substituted benzene from wastewater

A surfactant-modified coal fly ash was developed as a multifunctional adsorbent for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used to modify the surface of coal fly ash (CFA). The modified CFA was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface porosity analyzer, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that loading CFA with SDS not only improved the functionality and surface morphology of the raw ash for the adsorption of organic pollutants, but also enhanced its thermal stability. The efficiency of the modified fly ash was tested in terms of removal of two non-polar organic pollutants namely chlorobenzene (CB) and nitrobenzene (NB) from aqueous phase. The maximum uptake capacity of chlorobenzene and nitrobenzene with SDS-modified coal fly ash (SCFA) was 225 mg/g and 90 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic analysis was done by controlled kinetic models, i.e., pseudo first and second order kinetic models. The results showed that adsorption of CB and NB onto SCFA followed a pseudo second order kinetic model. The adsorption of chlorobenzene was exothermic over the modified adsorbent while nitrobenzene showed an endothermic behavior. The isotherm analysis depicted the multilayer adsorption of both pollutants onto the surface of the surfactant modified adsorbent. This work has shown that surface modification using surfactants can be a viable option to enhance the adsorption capacity of fly ash for pollutants removal.

Formation of Cr-based layered double hydroxide: effect of the amendments

Chromium is one of the eight most popular inorganic soil pollutants in China, and its bioavailability is determined by the chemical states. Amendments, which are able to change the chemical forms of chromium and decrease its bioavailability, have received considerable attention in recent years. In this work, the formation of Cr-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and the immobilization of Cr in solution and soil were systemically investigated. The formation of Cr-based LDHs is strongly depended on the layer charges, aging temperatures and reaction time, as identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectrum. According to the pot experiment results, the concentration of Cr in the overground part of Brassica Chinensis L. was significantly decreased to 1.50-2.03 µg kg^- 1 in the present of amendments. In total, the finding of LDHs formation on amendments and the thermodynamic stability of LDHs provides a new insight into the remediation of Cr-polluted soils.

A Comprehensive Review of Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Carbon Composites as an Environmental Multifunctional Material for Wastewater Treatment

As is well known, hydrotalcite-like compounds, such as layered-double-hydroxide (LDH) materials, have shown great potential applications in many fields owing to their unique characteristics, including a higher anion exchange capacity, a structure memory effect, low costs, and remarkable recyclability. While the lower surface area and leaching of metal ions from LDH composites reduce the process efficiency of the catalyst, combining LDH materials with other materials can improve the surface properties of the composites and enhance the catalytic performance. Among organic compounds, carbon materials can be used as synergistic materials to overcome the defects of LDHs and provide better performance for environmental functional materials, including adsorption materials, electrode materials, photocatalytic materials, and separation materials. Therefore, this article comprehensively reviews recent works on the preparation and application of layered double-hydroxide-based carbon (LDH–C) composites as synergistic materials in the field of environmental remediation. In addition, their corresponding mechanisms are discussed in depth. Finally, some perspectives are proposed for further research directions on exploring efficient and low-cost clay composite materials.
