Removal efficiency of organic micropollutants in successive wastewater treatment steps in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant: Bench-scale application of tertiary treatment processes to improve removal of organic micropollutants persisting after secondary treatment

Occurrence, removal, and prioritization of organic micropollutants in four full-scale wastewater treatment plants in Korea

This study investigated the occurrence, removal rate, and potential risks of 43 organic micropollutants (OMPs) in four municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Korea. Results from two-year intensive monitoring confirmed the presence of various OMPs in the influents, including pharmaceuticals such as acetaminophen (pain relief), caffeine (stimulants), cimetidine (H2-blockers), ibuprofen (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs- NSAIDs), metformin (antidiabetics), and naproxen (NSAIDs) with median concentrations of >1 μg/L. Some pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine-anticonvulsants, diclofenac-NSAIDs, propranolol-β-blockers), corrosion inhibitors (1H-benzotriazole-BTR, 4-methyl-1H-benzotriazole-4-TTR), and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were negligibly removed during WWTP treatment. The OMP concentrations in the influents and effluents were mostly lower in August than those of other months (p-value <0.05) possibly due to wastewater dilution by high precipitation or enhanced biodegradation under high-temperature conditions. The anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process (A2O) with a membrane bioreactor exhibited higher OMP removal than other processes, such as A2O with sedimentation or the conventional activated sludge process (p-value <0.05). Pesticides (DEET and atrazine), corrosion inhibitors (4-TTR and BTR), and metformin were selected as priority OMPs in toxicity-driven prioritization, whereas PFCs were determined as priority OMPs given their persistence and bioaccumulation properties. Overall, our results contribute to an important database on the occurrence, removal, and potential risks of OMPs in Korean WWTPs.

Seasonal patterns, fate and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceutical compounds in a wastewater treatment plant with Bacillus bio-reactor treatment

Pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) pose a growing concern with potential environmental impacts, commonly introduced into the environment via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The occurrence, removal, and season variations of 60 different classes of PhCs were investigated in the baffled bioreactor (BBR) wastewater treatment process during summer and winter. The concentrations of 60 PhCs were 3400 ± 1600 ng/L in the influent, 2700 ± 930 ng/L in the effluent, and 2400 ± 120 ng/g dw in sludge. Valsartan (Val, 1800 ng/L) was the main contaminant found in the influent, declining to 520 ng/L in the effluent. The grit chamber and BBR tank were substantially conducive to the removal of VAL. Nonetheless, the BBR process showcased variable removal efficiencies across different PhC classes. Sulfadimidine had the highest removal efficiency of 87 ± 17% in the final effluent (water plus solid phase). Contrasting seasonal patterns were observed among PhC classes within BBR process units. The concentrations of many PhCs were higher in summer than in winter, while some macrolide antibiotics exhibited opposing seasonal fluctuations. A thorough mass balance analysis revealed quinolone and sulfonamide antibiotics were primarily eliminated through degradation and transformation in the BBR process. Conversely, 40.2 g/d of macrolide antibiotics was released to the natural aquatic environment via effluent discharge. Gastric acid and anticoagulants, as well as cardiovascular PhCs, primarily experienced removal through sludge adsorption. This study provides valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of PhCs in wastewater treatment, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to effectively mitigate their release and potential environmental risks.

A Comprehensive Review on Modification of Titanium Dioxide-Based Catalysts in Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment

It has become necessary to develop effective strategies to prevent and reduce water pollution as a result of the increase in dangerous pollutants in water reservoirs. Consequently, there is a need to design new catalyst materials to promote the efficiency of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the field of wastewater treatment plant to ensure the mineralization of trace organic contaminants. A notable approach gaining attention involves the coupling of sulfate radicals-based AOPs to photocatalysis or electrocatalysis processes, aiming to achieve the complete removal of refractory contaminants into water and carbon dioxide. Titanium dioxide as metal oxide has received great attention for its catalytic application in water purification. TiO2 catalysts offer a multitude of advantages in AOPs. They are characterized by their high photocatalytic activity under both ultraviolet and visible light, making them environmentally friendly due to the absence of toxic byproducts during oxidation. Their versatility is remarkable, finding utility in various AOPs, from photocatalysis to photo-Fenton processes. TiO2's durability ensures long-lasting catalytic activity, which is crucial for continuous treatment processes, and their cost-effectiveness is particularly advantageous. Furthermore, their chemical stability allows it to withstand varying pH conditions. However, the large band gap energy and low electrical conductivity hinder the catalytic reaction effectiveness. This review aims to examine various approaches to enhance the catalytic performance of titanium dioxide, with the objective of enabling more efficient water purification methods.

Advancing the development of nanocomposite adsorbent through zinc-doped nickel ferrite-pinecone biochar for removal of chromium (VI) from wastewater

Leather and textile industrial effluents are the main disseminating routes for chromium contamination of water bodies, causing adverse impacts on public and environmental health. The attempt to remediate chromium through conventional wastewater treatment methods is inefficient. Therefore, this study aims to synthesize zinc-doped nickel ferrite pinecone biochar (Zn-NiF@PBC) nanocomposite for the removal of chromium from wastewater systems. The Zn-NiF@PBC nanocomposite was synthesized via the co-precipitation method. The properties of zinc-doped nickel ferrite (Zn-NiF) were effectively modified by blending with biochar at 1, 5, 10, and 15 % (w/w) which was successfully embedded with Zn-Ni ferrite nanoparticles. This was characterized and confirmed by typical adsorbent properties such as a high surface area of 104 m2/g, conducive pore volume of 0.117 cm3/g and pore size of 3.41 nm (BET), interactive multi-functional groups (FTIR), surface charge determination (pHpzc,), crystalline structure (XRD) and very rough surface morphology (SEM). The maximum chromium adsorption was found to be 95 % at the specific experimental condition of pH 3, adsorbent dose 1 g/50 mL, contact time 120 min, and initial chromium concentration 100 mg/L. The adsorption experimental data was best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm at R2 0.98 indicating the adsorption process was homogeneous and monolayer whereas the kinetics adsorption was resembling the second-order kinetic at R2 0.99. Moreover, the adsorption thermodynamics was spontaneous, endothermic, and increased the change in entropy. Finally, the regeneration of Zn-NiF@PBC was found to be effective up to five 5 cycles but gradually degrading in terms of removal efficiency after 3 cycles. In general, Zn-NiF@PBC can remediate chromium from wastewater with huge potential for scale-up and extend to other pollutants clear-up.

Removal of Diclofenac and Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Media Using Composite Sorbents in Dynamic Conditions

Pharmaceuticals and heavy metals pose significant risks to human health and aquatic ecosystems, necessitating their removal from water and wastewater. A promising alternative for this purpose involves their removal by adsorption on composite sorbents prepared using a conventional layer-by-layer (LbL) method or an innovative coacervate direct deposition approach. In this study, four novel composite materials based on a silica core (IS) and a polyelectrolyte coacervate shell were used for the investigation of dynamic adsorption of three heavy metals (lead, nickel and cadmium) and an organic drug model (diclofenac sodium salt, DCF-Na). The four types of composite sorbents were tested for the first time in dynamic conditions (columns with continuous flow), and the column conditions were similar to those used in wastewater treatment plants. The influence of the polyanion nature (poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) vs. poly(sodium methacrylate) (PMAA)), maintaining a constant poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI), and the cross-linking degree (r = 0.1 and r = 1.0) of PEI chains on the immobilization of these pollutants (inorganic vs. organic) on the same type of composite was also studied. The experiments involved both single- and multi-component aqueous solutions. The kinetics of the dynamic adsorption process were examined using two non-linear models: the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models. The tested sorbents demonstrated good adsorption capacities with affinities for the metal ions in the following order: Pb2+ > Cd2+ > Ni2+. An increase in the initial diclofenac sodium concentration led to an enhanced adsorption capacity of the IS/(PEI-PAA)c-r1 sorbent. The calculated sorption capacities were in good agreement with the adsorption capacity predicted by the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models. The substantial affinity observed between DCF-Na and a column containing composite microparticles saturated with heavy metal ions was explained.

Occurrence, removal, and risk assessment of emerging contaminants in aquatic products processing sewage treatment plants

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments have attracted attention due to their wide distribution and potential ecotoxicities. Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are proven to be the major source of ECs in the aquatic environment, while there remains insufficient understanding of the removal and risk assessment of ECs in STPs. Here, we clarified the degradation and risk impact of 13 ECs in two aquatic product processing sewage treatment plants (APPSTPs) along the southeast coast of China. The concentrations of ECs followed the order: endocrine-disrupting chemicals (1877.85-15,398.02 ng/L in influent, 3.37-44.47 ng/L in effluent) >  > sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs, 75.14-906.19 ng/L in influent, 1.14-15.33 ng/L in effluent) > pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs, 44.47-589.93 ng/L in influent, 2.54-34.16 ng/L in effluent) ≈ fluoroquinolone antibiotic (54.76-434.83 ng/L in influent, 10.75-32.82 ng/L in effluent) > other antibiotics (16.21-51.96 ng/L in influent, 0.68-6.17 ng/L in effluent). Moreover, the concentrations of PPCPs (decreased by 55.33-87.65% in peak fishing season) and antibiotics (increased by 44.99% in peak fishing season) were affected by fishing activities. In particular, the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process had a better removal effect than the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2/O) process on the treatment of some contaminants (e.g., norfloxacin and nonylphenol). Risk evaluations of ECs demonstrated that nonylphenol and SAs were at high- and low-risk states, respectively. Overall, our results provide important information for the degradation treatment of ECs, which is essential for pollutant management policy formulation.

Synergistic removal of pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance from ultrafiltered WWTP effluent: Free-floating ARGs exceptionally susceptible to degradation

To protect the environment and human health, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and persistent pharmaceuticals need to be removed from WWTP effluent prior to its reuse. However, an efficient process for removing free-floating extracellular DNA (exDNA) in combination with a wide range of pharmaceuticals is yet to be reported for real process conditions. As a possible solution, we treated real ultrafiltered WWTP effluent with UV/H₂O₂ and combined GAC and zeolite sorption. In terms of exDNA, sequencing and high-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) showed that exDNA is a potent carrier of numerous ARGs in ultrafiltered WWTP effluent (123 ARGs), including multi-drug efflux pump mexF that became the dominant exARG in GAC effluent over time. Due to the exposure to degradation agents, exDNA was reduced more efficiently than intracellular DNA, and overall levels of ARGs were substantially lowered. Moreover, GAC sorption was particularly effective in the removal of almost all the 85 detected pharmaceutical residues, with fresh GAC demonstrating an efficiency of up to 100%. However, zeolite (Si/Al 0.8) addition was needed to enhance the removal of persistent pollutants such as gabapentin and diclofenac to 57% and up to 100%, respectively. Our combined approach eminently decreases the hazardous effects of pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance in the ultrafiltered WWTP effluent, producing effluent suitable for multiple reuse options according to the latest legislation. In addition, we provided similarly promising but less extensive data for surface water and treated greywater.

Fate of emerging contaminants in a sequencing batch reactor and potential of biological activated carbon as tertiary treatment for the removal of persisting contaminants

The study aims to understand the occurrence and removal of 20 emerging contaminants (ECs) in each unit process of a sequencing batch reactor-based wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and explore the potential of biological activated carbon (BAC) for the treatment of residual ECs and organic matter in the secondary effluent. Analgesic-acetaminophen, anti-inflammatory drug-ibuprofen, and stimulant-caffeine were detected at high concentrations in the influent. Most of the removal was observed in the biological treatment stage in the SBR basins. The mass load of the ECs was 2.93 g/d in the secondary effluent and 0.4 g/d in the final sludge, while the total removal of the mass load of ECs till the secondary treatment stage was 93.22%. 12 of the 20 ECs were removed by more than 50%, while carbamazepine (negative removal), sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim were removed by less than 20%. As a polishing step and to remove residual ECs, two BAC units were studied for 11,000 bed volumes (324 days). Packed column studies on granular activated carbon were conducted, and GAC development to BAC was monitored. SEM and FTIR were used to confirm and characterize the BAC. The BAC appeared to be more hydrophobic than the GAC. The BAC removed 78.4% and 40% of the dissolved ECs and organic carbon at an optimum EBCT of 25 min. Carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim were removed by 61.5, 84, and 52.2%, respectively. Parallel column tests revealed adsorption as an important mechanism for the removal of positively charged compounds. The results indicate that the BAC is an effective tertiary/polishing technique for removing organic and micropollutants in the secondary wastewater effluent.

Efficiency of ozonation and O3/H2O2 as enhanced wastewater treatment processes for micropollutant abatement and disinfection with minimized byproduct formation

Ozonation, a viable option for improving wastewater effluent quality, requires process optimization to ensure the organic micropollutants (OMPs) elimination and disinfection under minimized byproduct formation. This study assessed and compared the efficiencies of ozonation (O₃) and ozone with hydrogen peroxide (O₃/H₂O₂) for 70 OMPs elimination, inactivation of three bacteria and three viruses, and formation of bromate and biodegradable organics during the bench-scale O₃ and O₃/H₂O₂ treatment of municipal wastewater effluent. 39 OMPs were fully eliminated, and 22 OMPs were considerably eliminated (54 ± 14%) at an ozone dosage of 0.5 gO₃/gDOC for their high reactivity to ozone or ^•OH. The chemical kinetics approach accurately predicted the OMP elimination levels based on the rate constants and exposures of ozone and ^•OH, where the quantum chemical calculation and group contribution method successfully predicted the ozone and ^•OH rate constants, respectively. Microbial inactivation levels increased with increasing ozone dosage up to ∼3.1 (bacteria) and ∼2.6 (virus) log₁₀ reductions at 0.7 gO₃/gDOC. O₃/H₂O₂ minimized bromate formation but significantly decreased bacteria/virus inactivation, whereas its impact on OMP elimination was insignificant. Ozonation produced biodegradable organics that were removed by a post-biodegradation treatment, achieving up to 24% DOM mineralization. These results can be useful for optimizing O₃ and O₃/H₂O₂ processes for enhanced wastewater treatment.

Fate and removal of iodinated X-ray contrast media in membrane bioreactor: Microbial dynamics and effects of different operational parameters

Iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) are mainly used in medical sector, and their presence in environmental waters is a cause of concern as they are capable of forming highly toxic iodinated disinfection byproducts. In the present study, the removal mechanisms of the three ICM- iohexol, iopromide, and iopamidol were elucidated in a lab-scale aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR). At steady-state operation (solids retention time (SRT)- 70 days, organic loading rate (OLR)- 0.80 KgCOD/m³-day, nitrogen loading rate (NLR)- 0.08 KgNH₄-N/m³-day, hydraulic retention time (HRT)- 12 h), the average removal of iohexol and iopromide was found to be 34.9 and 45.2 %, respectively, whereas iopamidol proved to be highly recalcitrant in aerobic conditions of the MBR (removal <10 % in all phases of the MBR operation). Further, through batch kinetic studies and mass balance analysis, it was observed that ICM were primarily biotransformed in the MBR system and biosorption (K_d < 10 L/Kg) was negligible. The biodegradation rate coefficient values (K_biol) of the ICM were found to be <0.65 L/g-d which indicate that biotransformation rate of ICM was slow. Increased OLR (1.60 KgCOD/m³-day) and reduced SRT (20 days) were found to negatively affect the removal of the ICM. Further, the removal of ICM was found to depend on its initial concentration, and the increment in the ammonium loading (0.16 KgNH₄-N/m³-day) did not favor its removal. The dosing of ICM altered the microbial dynamics of the mixed liquor and reduced the microbial diversity and richness. Bdellovibrio, Zoogloea, and bacteria belonging to TM7-3 class, Cryomorphaceae and Hyphomonadaceae families may contribute in ICM biotransformation.

Recent advances in the biological treatment of wastewater rich in emerging pollutants produced by pharmaceutical industrial discharges

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products present potential risks to human health and the environment. In particular, wastewater treatment plants often detect emerging pollutants that disrupt biological treatment. The activated sludge process is a traditional biological method with a lower capital cost and limited operating requirements than more advanced treatment methods. In addition, the membrane bioreactor combines a membrane module and a bioreactor, widely used as an advanced method for treating pharmaceutical wastewater with good pollution performance. Indeed, the fouling of the membrane remains a major problem in this process. In addition, anaerobic membrane bioreactors can treat complex pharmaceutical waste while recovering energy and producing nutrient-rich wastewater for irrigation. Wastewater characterizations have shown that wastewater's high organic matter content facilitates the selection of low-cost, low-nutrient, low-surface-area, and effective anaerobic methods for drug degradation and reduces pollution. However, to improve the biological treatment, researchers have turned to hybrid processes in which all physical, chemical, and biological treatment methods are integrated to remove various emerging contaminants effectively. Hybrid systems can generate bioenergy, which helps reduce the operating costs of the pharmaceutical waste treatment system. To find the most effective treatment technique for our research, this work lists the different biological treatment techniques cited in the literature, such as activated sludge, membrane bioreactor, anaerobic treatment, and hybrid treatment, combining physicochemical and biological techniques.

Biological magnetic ion exchange resin on advanced treatment of synthetic wastewater

In this work, three biological ion exchange systems and one biological activated carbon (BAC) system were established by employing magnetic ion exchange resin (MIEX), non-magnetic resin (NIEX), polystyrenic resin (DIEX) and granular activated carbon as the biocarrier for advanced treatment of wastewater. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal of four systems all stabilized at about 84% due to biodegradation. The start-up period of bio-MIEX (nearly 40 d) was greatly shorter than that of others (nearly 190 d). Ibuprofen removal was ascribed to adsorption in the initial stage, which subsequently changed to the effect of biodegradation. After the start-up period, ibuprofen removal was nearly 100% (bio-MIEX), 60% (bio-NIEX), 61% (bio-DIEX) and 89% (BAC). According to the surface observation, ATP and protein measurement and metagenomic analysis, the superior performance of bio-MIEX could be attributed to its highest biological activity resulted from the presence of Fe₃O₄ rather than polymer matrix and surface roughness.

In vitro bioanalytical assessment of the occurrence and removal of bioactive chemicals in municipal wastewater treatment plants in Korea

Effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contain various organic micropollutants, some of which can exert negative effects on the quality of receiving waters or drinking water sources. This study monitored two full-scale WWTPs in Korea for the occurrence and removal of bioactive chemicals for a one-year period using a battery of in vitro bioassays as a complementary approach to chemical analysis. Bioassays covering different endpoints were employed, such as hormone receptor activation (AR and ERα), xenobiotic metabolism (PAH and PXR), oxidative stress response (Nrf2), and cytotoxicity. The WWTP influents showed AR, ERα, and PAH activities at ng/L - μg/L and PXR and Nrf2 activities at μg/L - mg/L as bioanalytical equivalent concentrations of a reference compound for each bioassay. These bioactivities decreased along with the WWTP treatment train, with significant removals achieved by the secondary biological treatment processes. Cytotoxicity was observed only for some municipal wastewater (M-WWTP) influents but was below the limit of quantification for most cases. The influent and effluent bioactivities observed in this study were mostly comparable to those reported in other WWTPs in the literature. Comparison of the bioactivities with the effect-based trigger (EBT) values indicates that the impact of WWTP effluents on receiving water quality was low for most endpoints. For Nrf2, however, further investigation is required to evaluate the observed high bioactivities compared with the current EBT. The observed ERα activity could partly be explained by the presence of some steroid estrogens. Overall, our results contribute to an important database for the concentrations and removal efficiencies of bioactive chemicals in WWTPs and demonstrate bioassays as a useful tool for urban water quality monitoring.

Photodegradation of ibuprofen laden-wastewater using sea-mud catalyst/H2O2 system: evaluation of sonication modes and energy consumption

The main goal of the current investigation was to decontaminate ibuprofen (IBP) from hospital wastewater using sea mud as an H2O2 activator. Sea sludge was converted into catalysts at different temperatures and residence times in furnaces, and then tested in the removal of IBP, and the most efficient ones were reported for the production of catalysts. The catalyst was optimized at 400 °C and 3 h. SEM-mapping, FTIR, EDX, BET, and BJH experiments were used to characterize the catalyst. Experiments were done at two pulsed and continuous ultrasonication modes in a photoreactor, and their efficiencies were statistically compared. The designed variables included IBP concentration (10-100 mg/L), the catalyst concentration (0-3 g/L), pH (4-9), and time (10-90 min). The oxidation process had the maximum efficiency at pH 4, treatment time of 60 min, catalyst quantity of 5 g/L, and IBP content of 50 mg/L. The catalyst was recycled, and in the fifth stage, the removal efficiency of IBP was reduced to 50%. The amount of energy consumed for treating IBP laden-wastewater using the evaluated catalyst in two modes of continuous and pulsed ultrasonic was calculated as 102 kW h/m3 and 10 kW h/m3, respectively. IBP oxidation process was fitted with the first-order kinetic model. The system can be proposed for purifying hospital and pharmaceutical wastewaters.

Metformin Contamination in Global Waters: Biotic and Abiotic Transformation, Byproduct Generation and Toxicity, and Evaluation as a Pharmaceutical Indicator

Metformin is the first-line antidiabetic drug and one of the most prescribed medications worldwide. Because of its ubiquitous occurrence in global waters and demonstrated ecotoxicity, metformin, as with other pharmaceuticals, has become a concerning emerging contaminant. Metformin is subject to transformation, producing numerous problematic transformation byproducts (TPs). The occurrence, removal, and toxicity of metformin have been continually reviewed; yet, a comprehensive analysis of its transformation pathways, byproduct generation, and the associated change in adverse effects is lacking. In this review, we provide a critical overview of the transformation fate of metformin during water treatments and natural processes and compile the 32 organic TPs generated from biotic and abiotic pathways. These TPs occur in aquatic systems worldwide along with metformin. Enhanced toxicity of several TPs compared to metformin has been demonstrated through organism tests and necessitates the development of complete mineralization techniques for metformin and more attention on TP monitoring. We also assess the potential of metformin to indicate overall contamination of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments, and compared to the previously acknowledged ones, metformin is found to be a more robust or comparable indicator of such overall pharmaceutical contamination. In addition, we provide insightful avenues for future research on metformin.

Removal of micropollutants using a membrane bioreactor coupled with powdered activated carbon - A statistical analysis approach

The occurrence of micropollutants in wastewater is largely documented as well as the environmental risk posed by their residues in the aquatic environment. Many investigations have been carried out and plan to study and improve their removal efficiency in existing wastewater treatment plants. At the same time, efforts are being made to develop new technologies or upgrade existing ones to increase the removal of a selection of micropollutants. Due to the great variability in their chemical and physical properties, it would be advisable to find representative compounds or identify the factors which most influence the removal mechanisms under specific conditions. This study analyses the removal efficiencies of a great number of micropollutants in wastewater treated in a membrane bioreactor coupled with powdered activated carbon (PAC), which was the subject of a review article we have recently published. The main operational parameters (i.e. PAC dosage, PAC retention time and sludge retention time) and compound physico-chemical properties (i.e. octanol-water distribution coefficient, charge and molecular weight) were first selected on the basis of a dedicated screening step and then an attempt was carried out to clarify their influence on the removal of micropollutants from wastewater during its treatment. To this end, a statistical analysis, mainly based on exploratory methods (cluster analysis and principal component analysis) and regression analysis, was carried out to compare and discuss the different results published in the scientific literature included in the cited review article. It emerged, that, based on the collected dataset, micropollutant charge and LogD_ow seem to play the most important role in the removal mechanisms occurring in MBR coupled with PAC.
