Alternating water sources to minimize contaminant accumulation in food plants from treated wastewater irrigation

The use of treated wastewater (TWW) for agricultural irrigation is a critical measure in advancing sustainable water management and agricultural production. However, TWW irrigation in agriculture serves as a conduit to introduce many contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) into the soil-plant-food continuum, posing potential environmental and human health risks. Currently, there are few practical options to mitigate the potential risk while promoting the safe reuse of TWW. In this greenhouse study, the accumulation of 11 commonly occurring CECs was evaluated in three vegetables (radish, lettuce, and tomato) subjected to two different irrigation schemes: whole-season irrigation with CEC-spiked water (FULL), and half-season irrigation with CEC-spiked water, followed by irrigation with clean water for the remaining season (HALF). Significant decreases (57.0-99.8 %, p < 0.05) in the accumulation of meprobamate, carbamazepine, PFBS, PFBA, and PFHxA in edible tissues were found for the HALF treatment with the alternating irrigation scheme. The CEC accumulation reduction was attributed to reduced chemical input, soil degradation, plant metabolism, and plant growth dilution. The structural equation modeling showed that this mitigation strategy was particularly effective for CECs with a high bioaccumulation potential and short half-life in soil, while less effective for those that are more persistent. The study findings demonstrate the effectiveness of this simple and on-farm applicable management strategy that can be used to minimize the potential contamination of food crops from the use of TWW and other marginal water sources in agriculture, while promoting safe reuse and contributing to environmental sustainability.

Kinetics of chlorine and chloramine reactions in reverse osmosis permeate and their impact on radical formation during UV/chlorine advanced oxidation for potable reuse

Knowledge of the speciation of chlorine and chloramines in reverse osmosis (RO) permeate is needed to estimate the performance (i.e., pollutant log reduction) of subsequent UV/chlorine advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). To accurately predict the speciation, a previously reported breakpoint chlorination kinetic model was experimentally validated for pH 5.5 and reaction times < 3 min and used to predict the kinetics of breakpoint chlorination in RO permeate. The predictions showed that eliminating chloramines by adding chlorine at a dose beyond the chlorine-to-nitrogen (Cl/N) breakpoint ratio is not practical due to the high breakpoint Cl/N ratio for RO permeate (∼3.0 molar ratio) and an estimated > 40 min reaction time. The conversion from monochloramine (NH2Cl) to dichloramine (NHCl2) is the major process involved, and either or both free chlorine and chloramines may be the major species present, depending on the Cl/N ratio. Model simulations showed that increasing the oxidant dose may not always enhance the performance of UV/chlor(am)ine in RO permeate, due to the need for a low free chlorine dose for optimal •OH exposure in RO permeate. Further UV/AOPs modelling showed that it is important to control the NH2Cl concentration to improve the UV/AOP performance in RO permeate, which may be achieved by extending the reaction time after chlorine is added or increasing the applied Cl/N ratio (e.g., increasing chlorine dose). However, these measures only enhance the pollutant percentage removal by about 5 % under the conditions modelled. A simulation tool was developed and is provided to predict the speciation of chlor(am)ine in RO permeate.

Biofilm viability and microbial community of non-inoculated moving bed biofilm reactor in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus cultivation

The aim of this study was to evaluate two moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) without nitrifying bacteria inoculation. Biofilms and viable bacterial colonies were evaluated after 124 days. MBBR bioreactors received water from Oreochromis niloticus fish farming and water quality parameters were monitored daily. Four distinct phases with different fish stocking density were established.: phase 1 (2.40 kg m-3), phase 2 (4.95 kg m-3), phase 3 (8.71 kg m-3) and phase 4 (12.23 kg m-3). The successful maturation of the bioreactors occurred around on the 100th experimental day when the nitration rate increased to 57 % in MBBR1 and 38 % in MBBR2. 105 species were identified in the biofilms, which were grouped into 65 genera, three of which were essential: Pseudomonas (21.7 %), Nitrospira (15.1 %) and Gemmobacter (11.2 %). MBBR start-up without bacterial inoculation is time-consuming, however, strengthened by important nitrifying groups.

To what extent do water reuse treatments reduce antibiotic resistance indicators? A comparison of two full-scale systems

Water reuse is an essential strategy for reducing water demand from conventional sources, alleviating water stress, and promoting sustainability, but understanding the effectiveness of associated treatment processes as barriers to the spread of antibiotic resistance is an important consideration to protecting human health. We comprehensively evaluated the reduction of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in two field-operational water reuse systems with distinct treatment trains, one producing water for indirect potable reuse (ozone/biologically-active carbon/granular activated carbon) and the other for non-potable reuse (denitrification-filtration/chlorination) using metagenomic sequencing and culture. Relative abundances of total ARGs/clinically-relevant ARGs and cultured ARB were reduced by several logs during primary and secondary stages of wastewater treatment, but to a lesser extent during the tertiary water reuse treatments. In particular, ozonation tended to enrich multi-drug ARGs. The effect of chlorination was facility-dependent, increasing the relative abundance of ARGs when following biologically-active carbon filters, but generally providing a benefit in reduced bacterial numbers and ecological and human health resistome risk scores. Relative abundances of total ARGs and resistome risk scores were lowest in aquifer samples, although resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were occasionally detected in the monitoring well 3-days downgradient from injection, but not 6-months downgradient. Resistant E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were occasionally detected in the nonpotable reuse distribution system, along with increased levels of multidrug, sulfonamide, phenicol, and aminoglycoside ARGs. This study illuminates specific vulnerabilities of water reuse systems to persistence, selection, and growth of ARGs and ARB and emphasizes the role of multiple treatment barriers, including aquifers and distribution systems.

Process design and economic analysis for the production of microalgae from anaerobic digestates in open raceway ponds

A model based framework was established for large scale assessment of microalgae production using anaerobically digested effluent considering varied climatic parameters such as solar irradiance and air temperature. The aim of this research was to identify the optimum monthly average culture depth operation to minimize the cost of producing microalgae grown on anaerobic digestion effluents rich in ammoniacal nitrogen with concentration of 248 mg L-1. First, a productivity model combined with a thermal model was developed to simulate microalgae productivity in open raceway ponds as a function of climatic variables. Second, by combining the comprehensive open pond model with other harvesting equipment, the final techno economic model was developed to produce a microalgae product with 20 wt% biomass content and treated water with <1 mg L-1 ammoniacal nitrogen. The optimization approach on culture depth for outdoor open raceway ponds managed to reduce the cost of microalgae production grown in anaerobic digested wastewater up to 16 %, being a suitable solution for the production of low cost microalgae (1.7 AUD kg-1 dry weight) at possible scale of 1300 t dry weight microalgae yr-1.

Assessment of characteristics and treatment processes of wastewater from slaughterhouses in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil

The state of Minas Gerais is one of Brazil's largest animal protein producers, and its slaughterhouses generate highly polluting wastewater, which needs to be treated for discharge or reuse. As a novelty, this review article focused on assessing the characteristics and methods to treat wastewater from slaughterhouses in the state of Minas Gerais, and verifying its compliance with environmental regulatory agencies. The aim was to present data that helps to better manage this residue in other Brazilian states and countries. By analyzing the literature data, it was found that raw slaughterhouse wastewater (SWW) showed a high concentration of organic matter. For most SWW, the BOD5/COD ratio was above 0.4, which implies that it can be treated biologically. Generally, treated wastewater was in accordance with legal discharge standards, considering COD and BOD5 removals above 70% and 75%, respectively. It was found that wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) consisted of some type of pretreatment (screens, grease traps) to remove coarse solids and fatty material, eventually followed by a flotation step and finally by biological processes, mostly anaerobic and/or aerated (or facultative) ponds. However, the absence of an aerobic process at the end of the treatment in some WWTPs, in addition to a system allowing better removal of biological flocs, might be the reason for ammoniacal nitrogen and suspended solids values being above the allowed maximum in treated wastewater, respectively. Besides the discharge into water bodies, it was verified that fertigation using treated SWW is very common in the state of Minas Gerais.

Biochar and vegetation effects on discharge water quality from organic-substrate green roofs

Green roofs have been increasingly used to improve stormwater management, but poor vegetation performance on roof systems, varying with vegetation type, can degrade discharge quality. Biochar has been suggested as an effective substrate additive for green roofs to improve plant performance and discharge quality. However, research on the effects of biochar and vegetation on discharge quality in the long term is lacking and the underlying mechanisms involved are unclear. We examined the effects of biochar amendment and vegetation on discharge quality on organic-substrate green roofs with pre-grown sedum mats and direct-seeded native plants for three years and investigated the key factors influencing discharge quality. Sedum mats reduced the leaching of nutrients and particulate matter by 6-64% relative to native plants, largely due to the higher initial vegetation cover of the former. Biochar addition to sedum mat green roofs resulted in the best integrated water quality due to enhanced plant cover and sorption effects. Structural equation modeling revealed that nutrient leaching was primarily influenced by rainfall depth, time, vegetation cover, and substrate pH. Although biochar-amended sedum mats showed better discharge quality from organic-substrate green roofs, additional ecosystem services may be provided by native plants, suggesting future research to optimize plant composition and cover and biochar properties for sustainable green roofs.

Disinfection by-products control in wastewater effluents treated with ozone and biological activated carbon followed by UV/Chlor(am)ine processes

Sequential utilization of ozone (O3) and biological activated carbon (BAC) followed by UV/chlor(am)ine advanced oxidation process (AOP) has drawn attention in water reuse. However, the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in this process is less evaluated. This study investigated the DBP formation and the relevant toxicity during the O3-BAC-UV/chlor(am)ine treatment of sand-filtered municipal secondary effluent. DBP formation in UV/chlorine and UV/dichloramine (NHCl2) processes were compared, where the impact of key operational parameters (e.g., UV wavelength, pH) on DBP formation were comprehensively evaluated. O3-BAC significantly reduced DBP formation potential (DBPFP) (58.2 %). Compared to UV/chlorine AOP, UV/NHCl2 AOP reduced DBP formation by 29.7 % in short-time treatment, while insignificantly impacting on DBPFP (p > 0.05). UV/NHCl2 AOP also led to lower calculated cytotoxicity (67.7 %) and genotoxicity (55.9 %) of DBPs compared to UV/chlorine AOP. Compared to 254 nm UV light, the utilization of 285 nm UV light decreased the formation of DBPs in wastewater treated with the UV/chlorine AOP and UV/NHCl2 AOP by 31.3 % and 19.2 %, respectively. However, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in UV/NHCl2 AOP using 285 nm UV light increased by 83.4 % and 58.5 %, respectively, compared to 254 nm. The concentration of DBPs formed in the UV/NHCl2 AOP at pH 8 was 54.3 % lower than that at pH 7, suggesting a better control of DBPs at alkaline condition. In the presence of bromide, UV/NHCl2 AOP tended to generate more brominated DBPs than UV/chlorine AOP. Overall, UV/NHCl2 AOP resulted in lower concentration and toxicity of DBPs compared to UV/chlorine AOP.

The potential for water recovery from urban waste water - The perspective of urban waste water treatment plant operators in Poland

Water recovery from waste water has become an essential element of the circular economy in the Baltic Sea region. However, there is little data on the possibility of using water recovered from urban waste water. A survey was conducted to learn the opinions of Poland waste water treatment plant operators. They were asked whether they recovered water for internal or external needs. Respondents indicated opportunities and barriers in this activity. The opinions of 107 operators show that work is underway on closing internal circuits in urban WWTPs. These solutions are technically relatively easy to implement and show measurable benefits (i.e., saving drinking water). However, water recovery for external purposes is rare and is at a very early stage. Despite this, the potential is significant, although many financial, organizational, technical, and mental barriers exist. The most critical challenge is the safe use of reclaimed water and the cost-effectiveness of the solutions. The survey also shows a need for education and involvement of the public.

Virus surrogates throughout a full-scale advanced water reuse system

Water reuse as an alternative water supply is increasing throughout the world due to water stress and scarcity; however, there are no standard practices for monitoring virus pathogens in such systems. This study aimed to identify suitable surrogates for virus fate, transport, and removal throughout a water reuse scheme. Various microbial targets (11 viruses, two phage, and three bacteria) were monitored using molecular and culture methods across all treatment stages in a wastewater reclamation facility and advanced water treatment facility. Criteria were established for identifying suitable surrogates, which included reliable detection, observable fate and transport, calculable log-reduction values (LRVs), correlations with other targets, and various morphological types. In total, five viruses (PMMoV, AiV, GII NoV, AdV, FRNA GII) met these stringent criteria and were suggested as potential virus surrogates. These surrogates enabled successful comparison of assigned versus actual LRVs throughout a water reuse scheme. Results suggest that virus pathogens are effectively removed throughout water reuse treatment and the suggested surrogates can be utilized for monitoring treatment performance and ensuring public health safety. This study provides a framework that water utilities across the world can reference for establishing virus monitoring practices.

Human health risk assessment associated with the reuse of treated wastewater in arid areas

Qatar produces more than 850,000 m3/day of highly treated wastewater. The present study aims at characterizing the effluents coming out of three central wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of chemical pollutants including metals, metalloids and antibiotics commonly used in the country. Additionally, the study is assessing human health risks associated with the exposure to the treated wastewater (TWW) via dermal and ingestion routes. Although the origin of domestic wastewater is desalinated water (the only source of fresh water), the results show that the targeted parameters in TWW were within the international standards. Concentrations of Cl, F, Br, NO3, NO2, SO4 and PO4, were 389, <0.1, 1.2, 25, <0.1, 346, and 2.8 mg/L, respectively. On the other hand, among all cations, metals and metalloids, only boron (B) was 2.1 mg/L which is higher than the Qatari guidelines for TWW reuse in irrigation of 1.5 mg/L. Additionally, strontium (Sr) and thallium (Tl) were detected with relatively high concentrations of 30 mg/L and 12.5 μg/L, respectively, due to their natural and anthropogenic sources. The study found that the low concentrations of all tested metals and metalloids do not pose any risk to human health. However, Tl presents exposure levels above the 10 % of oral reference dose (HQ = 0.4) for accidental oral ingestion of TWW. The results for antibiotics show that exposure for adults and children to TWW are far below the admissible daily intakes set using minimum therapeutic dose and considering uncertainty factors. Treated wastewater of Qatar can be used safely for irrigation. However, further investigations are still needed to assess microbiological quality.

From biomarkers to community composition: Negative effects of UV/chlorine-treated reclaimed urban wastewater on freshwater biota

The use of urban wastewater reclaimed water has recently increased across the globe to restore stream environmental flows and mitigate the effects of water scarcity. Reclaimed water is disinfected using different treatments, but their effects into the receiving rivers are little studied. Physiological bioassays and biomarkers can detect sub-lethal effects on target species, but do not provide information on changes in community structure. In contrast, official monitoring programs use community structure information but often at coarse taxonomic resolution level that may fail to detect species level impacts. Here, we combined commonly used biomonitoring approaches from organism physiology to community species composition to scan a broad range of effects of disinfection of reclaimed water by UV-light only and both UV/chlorine on the biota. We (1) performed bioassays in one laboratory species (water flea Daphnia magna) and measured biomarkers in two wild species (caddisfly Hydropsyche exocellata and the barbel Luciobarbus graellsii), (2) calculated standard indices of biotic quality (IBQ) for diatoms, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fishes, and (3) analysed community species composition of eukaryotes determined by Cytochrome Oxidase C subunit I (cox1) metabarcoding. Only the UV/chlorine treatment caused significant changes in feeding rates of D. magna and reduced antioxidant defenses, increased anaerobic metabolism and altered the levels of lipid peroxidiation in H. exocellata. However, inputs of reclaimed water were significantly associated with a greater proportion of circulating neutrophils and LG-PAS cells in L. graellsii. Despite IBQ did not discriminate between the two water treatments, metabarcoding data detected community composition changes upon exposure to UV/chlorine reclaimed water. Overall, despite the effects of UV/chlorine-treated water were transient, our study suggests that UV-light treated is less harmful for freshwater biota than UV/chlorine-treated reclaimed water, but those effects depend of the organizational level.

Investigating the improvement of the quality of industrial effluents for reuse with added processes: coagulation, flocculation, multi-layer filter and UV

Reuse of wastewater is one of the ways to develop water resources. In addition to the need for drinking water, many industries also need high-quality water in the production line. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to investigate the advanced treatment of the wastewater treatment plant of Morche Khort industrial town using the processes of coagulation, flocculation with aeration, multi-layer filter, and disinfection by ultraviolet radiation to increase the quality of wastewater and reuse it in industries. In this study, to investigate the effect of coagulation and flocculation units along with aeration, filtration, and disinfection by ultraviolet rays (UV), on the quality of the secondary effluent from the wastewater treatment plant of Morche Khort industrial town, they were operated on a pilot scale. Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) was used as a coagulant. Layering of three layers of sand filter, from bottom to top including granulated silica at a height of 10 cm, sand at a height of 20 cm, and activated carbon at a height of 70 cm was used. The input and output sampling points of each unit were considered. By repeating twice in five stages of flow rates of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 (L/min), the samples were collected to determine COD, TSS, TDS, turbidity, pH, hardness, total coliform, and fecal coliform. Jar test results showed that Alum coagulant works almost the same as PAC in removing turbidity, but the efficiency of removing organic substances by PAC coagulant is higher than that of Alum at lower doses. The results of this study showed that the efficiency of the coagulation and flocculation process in removing turbidity, COD, TSS, TDS, and fat was 56.88%, 46.66%, 38%, 23.19%, and 91.43% respectively. In the current study, the results of the wastewater entering the sand filter showed that the percentage of removal efficiency with a loading rate of 1 (L/min) was turbidity, TSS, COD, TDS, and fat was 16. 93%, 56.84%, 50%, 5.67%, 33.44% respectively. In the UV disinfection unit, the removal efficiency percentage with a loading rate of 1 (L/min) for COD, TSS, turbidity, hardness, total coliform, and fecal coliform is 16%, 3.45%, 3.58%, 5.21%, 99.88%, and 98.37% respectively. Coagulation and flocculation system-multi-layer filter and disinfection can remove chemical-physical and microbial parameters to an acceptable level for using water in advanced purification systems and also for irrigation.

Dynamic simulation for reclaimed water reuse under multi-intervention policies in China

Unconventional water constitutes the fundamental approach to addressing global water scarcity and achieving the sustainable circulation of water resources. Due to the significant environmental advantages and economical production costs, reclaimed water has emerged as a preeminent unconventional source. However, the use in China confronts the predicament of oversupply relative to demand, requiring policy measures to overcome this challenge. Limited research exists on the combined impact of subsidies and water quality information disclosure supervision on reclaimed water utilization, potentially underestimating the practical incentivizing role of water quality information disclosure. Therefore, based on the framework of 'external environment-perceived value-utilization intention,' a multi-agent-based simulation model driven by evolutionary game theory is constructed, from micro to macro perspective, to investigate the composite effects of subsidies and water quality information disclosure supervision on public intentions for reclaimed water utilization and the evolutionary track of public decision-making. The results showed that (1) The influence of subsidies on the public's inclination toward reclaimed water has regional heterogeneity. In regions with average economic development, the subsidy policy shows an inverted U-shaped correlation with the public's intention to reclaimed water, indicating the presence of an optimal value for maximizing the promotional effect of subsidies. Conversely, the effect is less discernible in regions with higher economic development. (2) In regions with average economic development, supervision of information disclosure behavior can avert the diminishing incentivizing effects under radical subsidies, but the assistance of various supervision intensities is different. (3) In regions with higher economic development, the incentive effect of subsidies can be positively modulated by the supervision policy. Interactions between subsidy and supervision policies evoke diverse chain reactions under varying intensities in these regions, and the combination of moderate subsidies and high supervision emerges as the most optimal strategy to advance reclaimed water development.

Approaching easy water disinfection for all: Can in situ electrochlorination outperform conventional chlorination under realistic conditions?

Electrochlorination has gained research interest for its potential application as decentralized water treatment. A number of studies have displayed promising efficiency for water disinfection. However, a comprehensive comparison of in situ electrodisinfection to existing disinfection techniques, particularly under realistic water composition and flow rates, still needs additional research efforts. The aim of this study is to evaluate in situ electrochlorination while comparing the treatment with conventional chemical chlorination for point-of-entry decentralized disinfection at the household level. An electrochemical flow cell reactor was operated in a single pass mode considering water flow and water consumption for a household of four family members. Disinfection efficiency assessment of both electrochemical and chemical chlorination was conducted using bacterial and viral surrogates, E. coli and MS2 bacteriophage. Furthermore, a techno-economic analysis was conducted, using the levelized cost of water, to compare two electrochemical chlorination scenarios (i.e., electrical grid energy use, and solar panel powered system) and benchmarked against the baseline treatment of chemical chlorination. The findings revealed increased inactivation efficiency of in situ electrochlorination over conventional chlorination (p-value < 0.05). The synergetic impact of radicals and chlorine, and/or contribution of high chlorine concentration at acidic pH near anode surface were identified as key factors that could enhance disinfection performance of in situ electrochlorination. The techno-economic analysis demonstrated that electrochemical treatment, when operated using renewable energy sources, is not only a more environmentally sustainable approach, but also emerges as a more economically feasible solution for decentralized water treatment application. The results highlight that in situ electrochlorination is a more advanced alternative to decentralized water chlorination. However, further fundamental research on products and by-products formation under various water matrices is required.

Navigating the waters of nixtamalization: Sustainable solutions for maize-processing wastewater treatment

Maize-processing wastewater, also known as nejayote, does represent a widespread residue originating from both small- and large-scale factories that produce maize-based products using the alkaline maize-cooking process (nixtamalization). Nejayote is a high-strength wastewater containing significant concentrations of soluble and insoluble organic and inorganic compounds resulting from the disintegration of maize, as well as from the substantial quantity of lime (Ca(OH)2) used in the process. In order to make nixtamalization more sustainable in terms of water usage and to mitigate the health and environmental issues related to nejayote discharges into environmental matrices and public sewage systems, appropriate and effective treatment processes must be applied either before effluent disposal or for water reuse purposes. With this problematic as the central topic, we conducted a comprehensive review of relevant literature addressing this issue spanning from the mid-1980s to the present day. This review covers three primary aspects: i) the extensive variability observed in the physicochemical composition of maize-processing wastewater, ii) the various biological and physicochemical methods developed for its treatment, and iii) the potential for organic and mineral resource recovery from this waste. Although initial efforts to treat nejayote were left behind for decades, recent years have witnessed a resurgence of research interest in these research topics mainly underpinned by the urgency to conserve water resources. Based on the comprehensive evaluation of the existing literature, we identified the existing limitations on nejayote treatment and identified prospects for developing robust and technically feasible treatment possibilities. Within this review, we propose three main approaches for wastewater treatment and water reuse: physicochemical-based technologies, bioprocess in tandem with membrane technology, and low-cost bioprocesses coupled to physicochemical methods.

Organic matter biofiltration performance modeling: Influence of influent water quality, operating conditions, and biomass

The impact of source water dissolved organic matter (DOM) origin, empty bed contact time (EBCT), temperature, and pretreatment methods on biofiltration performance was evaluated and predictive models based on experimental data were developed. Three DOM source water types, terrestrial, microbial, and treated wastewater (WW) effluent, were utilized. A model was developed to predict biofilter performance for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal based on the influent biodegradable DOC (BDOC) fraction, a single active biomass measurement from the top of the filter and the filter EBCT. A biomass distribution model was developed to predict total active biomass throughout the filter based on a single biomass measurement from the top of the filter. The measured BDOC fractions were 21 % for the nonWW impacted source waters, 36 % for the WW effluents and 62 % for the ozonated WW effluents. At an EBCT of 15 min, biofilters removed between 7 and 21 % of the DOC (19 to 50 % for BDOC) depending on the DOM type and use of ozonation. When the EBCT decreased to 5 min DOC removal decreased by 40 % and when increased to 30 min removal increased by 42 %. When the temperature decreased from 22 °C to 6 °C DOC removal was 33 % lower and when increased to 28 °C removal was 42 % higher. ATP values were found to be a function of temperature and DOM origin, as the average ATP values from the WW effluent biofilters were almost double that of the non-WW impacted sources and pre-ozonation of the WW effluent yielded values three times higher. The model was applied to the results of 27 different biofilter runs at three EBCTs yielding one distinct rate constant for the non-WW impacted source waters and one rate constant for the WW effluents. The model was successfully applied to the results of 19 filter runs from the literature and to those from a pilot plant over 6 months of operation.

Plasma treatment of sulfamethoxazole contaminated water: Intermediate products, toxicity assessment and potential agricultural reuse

The increasing global water demand has prompted the reuse of treated wastewater. However, the persistence of organic micropollutants in inefficiently treated effluents can have detrimental effects depending on the scope of the reclaimed water usage. One example is the presence of sulfamethoxazole, a widely used antibiotic whose interference with the folate synthesis pathway negatively affects plants and microorganisms. The goal of this study is to assess the suitability of a non-thermal plasma-ozonation technique for the removal of the organic pollutant and reduction of its herbicidal effect. Fast sulfamethoxazole degradation was achieved with apparent reaction rate constants in the range 0.21-0.49 min-1, depending on the initial concentration. The highest energy yield (64.5 g/kWh at 50 % removal) exceeds the values reported thus far in plasma degradation experiments. During treatment, 38 degradation intermediates were detected and identified, of which only 9 are still present after 60 min. The main reactive species that contribute to the degradation of sulfamethoxazole and its intermediate products were hydroxyl radicals and ozone, which led to the formation of several hydroxylated compounds, ring opening and fragmentation. The herbicidal effect of the target compound was eliminated with its removal, showing that the remanent intermediates do not retain phytotoxic properties.

Perception and acceptance towards water reuse in the Southeast United States: A public survey

The growing global water crisis has increased the need for alternative water sources. Among the potential solutions to mitigate the current challenging situation, water reuse has been considered and implemented, especially during the past decade. Public perception/acceptance represents one of the most common challenges related to the wide implementation of water reuse. To evaluate its public awareness and better understand the reasons behind the public skepticism for outdoor and indoor activities, a survey was conducted in the Southeast United States. The survey included open-ended questions, questions with five-point Likert scales, and multiple-choice questions. A total of 203 responses were considered for the final analysis. Participants, mostly in the 18-60 age range, hold at least a high school diploma (94 %). The age of the participants had an association with the knowledge related to the wastewater treatment method adopted in their household (chi squared, X2 = 28.8, p = 0.055). Participants 1) selected the U.S. EPA as the most credible organization in the field of drinking water, 2) were more willing to use recycled water for removing road dust, watering private yards or non-edible crops, public toilets, and firefighting than for watering edible crops/orchards or livestock feed, and 3) were reluctant to use recycled water when direct-human contact or ingestion can occur. While only 8 % were willing to use recycled water for drinking, the addition of further treatments combined with environmental regulations, frequent sampling campaigns, and educational activities highlighting possible treatments and potential benefits related to water reuse, will increase the participants' willingness to implement water reuse more widely.

Integrated bipolar electrocoagulation and PVC-based ultrafiltration membrane process for palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment

In this study, the effectiveness of integrating electrocoagulation (EC) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for palm oil mill effluent (POME) wastewater treatment was investigated. The impact of various parameters on contaminant removal efficiency, including electrode configuration (monopolar and bipolar), number of anodes, agitation rate, and current density, was studied. The findings demonstrated that using bipolar (BP) electrodes in the EC reactor improved coagulation efficiency. However, an increase in agitation rate led to a decrease in removal efficiency. The electrode configuration of 2A-2C-2B achieved high contaminant removal with a lower electrode consumption compared to the 4A-2C and 4A-2C-2B configurations. The removal efficiencies for total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and biological oxygen demand (BOD) were 59.1%, 99.9%, 96.8%, and 96%, respectively. The operating cost for the electrode configuration of 2A-2C-2B was estimated to be 2.71 US$ m-3 at an effluent capacity of 50 m3 d-1 and 20 h d-1 of operating time, while the energy requirement was 6.20 kWh m-3. An increase in operating time from 5 to 24 h d-1 raised the specific operating cost from 2.17 to 2.85 US$ m-3. This study provides valuable insights into optimizing EC and UF processes for POME wastewater treatment, which could have significant implications for sustainable industrial practices.

Dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes through soil-plant-earthworm continuum in the food production environment

Treated municipal wastewater (TMW) can provide a reliable source of irrigation water for crops, which is especially important in arid areas where water resources are limited or prone to drought. Nonetheless, TMW may contain residual antibiotics, potentially exposing the crops to these substances. The goal of this study was to investigate the dissemination of antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) in the soil-plant-earthworm continuum after irrigation of spinach and radish plants with TMW containing trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, and sulfapyridine in a greenhouse experiment, followed by feeding of earthworms with harvested plant materials. Our results showed that antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were enriched in the soil-plant-earthworm microbiomes irrigated with TMW and TMW spiked with higher concentrations of antibiotics. The number of ARGs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) enrichment varied with plant type, with spinach harboring a significantly higher amount of ARGs and ARB compared to radish. Our data showed that bulk and rhizosphere soils of spinach and radish plants irrigated with MilliQ water, TMW, TMW10, or TMW100 had significant differences in bacterial community (p < 0.001), ARG (p < 0.001), and virulence factor gene (VFG) (p < 0.001) diversities. The abundance of ARGs significantly decreased from bulk soil to rhizosphere to phyllosphere and endosphere. Using metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs), we recovered many bacterial MAGs and a near complete genome (>90 %) of bacterial MAG of genus Leclercia adecarboxylata B from the fecal microbiome of earthworm that was fed harvested radish tubers and spinach leaves grown on TMW10 irrigated waters, and this bacterium has been shown to be an emerging pathogen causing infection in immunocompromised patients that may lead to health complications and death. Therefore, crops irrigated with TMW containing residual antibiotics and ARGs may lead to increased incidences of enrichment of ARB in the soil-plant-earthworm continuum.

Microalgae harvesting for wastewater treatment and resources recovery: A review

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment has been conceived to obtain reclaimed water and produce microalgal biomass for bio-based products and biofuels generation. However, microalgal biomass harvesting is challenging and expensive, hence one of the main bottlenecks for full-scale implementation. Finding an integrated approach that covers concepts of engineering, green chemistry and the application of microbial anabolism driven towards the harvesting processes, is mandatory for the widespread establishment of full-scale microalgae wastewater treatment plants. By using nature-based substances and applying concepts of chemical functionalization in already established harvesting methods, the costs of harvesting processes could be reduced while preventing microalgae biomass contamination. Moreover, microalgae produced during wastewater treatment have unique culture characteristics, such as the consortia, which are primarily composed of microalgae and bacteria, that should be accounted for prior to downstream processing. The aim of this review is to examine recent advances in microalgal biomass harvesting and recovery in wastewater treatment systems, considering the impact of consortia variability. The costs of available harvesting technologies, such as coagulation/flocculation, coupled to sedimentation and differential air flotation, are provided. Additionally, promising technologies are discussed, including autoflocculation, bioflocculation, new filtration materials, nanotechnology, microfluidic and magnetic methods.

Heterogeneous photosensitization for water reuse in cellars: evaluation of silica, spongin, and chitosan as carrier material

Photosensitization, a powerful oxidation reaction, offers significant potential for wastewater treatment in the context of industrial process water reuse. This environmentally friendly process can be crucial in reducing water consumption and industrial pollution. The ultimate goal is to complete process water reuse, creating a closed-loop system that preserves the inherent value of water resources. The photosensitized oxidation reaction hinges on three essential components: the photosensitizer, visible light, and oxygen. In this study, we assess the performance of three distinct materials-silica, chitosan, and spongin-as carrier materials for incorporating the phthalocyanine photosensitizer (ZnPcS4) in the heterogenous photosensitization process. Among the three materials under study, chitosan emerged as the standout performer in reactor hydrodynamic performance. In the photooxidation process, the photosensitizer ZnPcS4 exhibited notable efficacy, resulting in a significant reduction of approximately 20 to 30% in the remaining COD concentration of the cellar wastewater. Chitosan demonstrated exceptional hydrodynamic characteristics and displayed a favorable response to pH adjustments within the range of 8 to 10, outperforming the other two carrier materials. To further enhance the efficiency of continuous operation, exploring methods for mitigating photosensitizer bleaching within the reaction medium and investigating the impact of different pH values on the process optimization would be prudent.

Performance of lagoon and constructed wetland systems for tertiary wastewater treatment and potential of reclaimed water in agricultural irrigation

Climate change poses challenges to agricultural water resources, both in terms of quantity and quality. As an adaptation measure, the new European Regulation (EU) 2020/741 establishes different water quality classes for the use of reclaimed water in agricultural irrigation. Italy is also working on the definition of a new regulation on reclaimed water reuse for agricultural irrigation (in substitution of the current one) that will also include the specific requirements imposed by the European one. Nature-based Solutions (NBS) can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to facilitate water reclamation and reuse. The present study reports the outcomes of a long-term monitoring campaign of two NBS (e.g., a constructed wetland (CW) and a lagoon system (LS)) comparing influent and effluent concentrations of different contaminants (e.g., E. coli, BOD5, TSS, TN and TP) with the threshold values imposed by the new regulations. The results showed that in both the case studies, E. coli (about 100 CFU 100 mL-1) and BOD5 (lower than 25 mg L-1) mean effluent concentration need to be further reduced in reclaimed water to be suitable for unlimited reuse. As a negative aspect, in both the monitored NBS, an increase in TSS mean concentration in the effluent was observed, up to 40 mg L-1 in the case of the LS, making reclaimed water unsuitable for agricultural reuse. The CW has proven to be more effective in nitrogen removal (the effluent mean concentration was 3.4 mg L-1), whereas the LS was better at phosphorus removal (with an effluent mean concentration of 0.4 mg L-1). Based on the results, recommendations were made to further improve the performance of both systems in order to have adequate water quality, even for class A. Furthermore, the capacity of reclaimed water to meet crop water and nutrient needs was analyzed, and total nitrogen removal rate coefficients were calculated for the design of future LSs.

Optimizing Ozone Disinfection in Water Reuse: Controlling Bromate Formation and Enhancing Trace Organic Contaminant Oxidation

The use of ozone/biofiltration advanced treatment has become more prevalent in recent years, with many utilities seeking an alternative to membrane/RO based treatment for water reuse. Ensuring efficient pathogen reduction while controlling disinfection byproducts and maximizing oxidation of trace organic contaminants remains a major barrier to implementing ozone in reuse applications. Navigating these challenges is imperative in order to allow for the more widespread application of ozonation. Here, we demonstrate the effectiveness of ozone for virus, coliform bacteria, and spore forming bacteria inactivation in unfiltered secondary effluent, all the while controlling the disinfection byproduct bromate. A greater than 6-log reduction of both male specific and somatic coliphages was seen at specific ozone doses as low as 0.75 O3:TOC. This study compared monochloramine and hydrogen peroxide as chemical bromate control measures in high bromide water (Br- = 0.35 ± 0.07 mg/L). On average, monochloramine and hydrogen peroxide resulted in an 80% and 36% decrease of bromate formation, respectively. Neither bromate control method had any appreciable impact on virus or coliform bacteria disinfection by ozone; however, the use of hydrogen peroxide would require a non-Ct disinfection framework. Maintaining ozone residual was shown to be critical for achieving disinfection of more resilient microorganisms, such as spore forming bacteria. While extremely effective at controlling bromate, monochloramine was shown to inhibit TrOC oxidation, whereas hydrogen peroxide enhanced TrOC oxidation.

Short-term effect of reclaimed wastewater quality gradient on soil microbiome during irrigation

To investigate the effect of wastewater (WW) treatment on soil bacterial communities, water of different quality was used to irrigate eight lettuces per tank: raw municipal wastewater (RWW), WW treated with an aerated constructed wetland (CWW) and WW treated with a membrane bioreactor (MBW), and tap water (TW). The physicochemical and microbiological characteristics (quality indicators) of these water types were characterized, and the water and soil bacterial communities were monitored by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Despite marked differences in microbial load and diversity of waters, soil communities remained remarkably stable after irrigation. Microbial biomass was increased only in soils irrigated with RWW. At the end of the irrigation period (day 84), soil and water shared a large fraction of their bacterial communities, from 43 % to 70 %, depending on the water quality, indicating a transfer of bacterial communities from water to soil. Overall, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria was increased and that of Actinobacteria was decreased in soils irrigated with MBW, CWW and even more with RWW. Multivariate ordination clearly separated soils in three groups: soils irrigated with the cleanest water (TW), with treated WW (MBW and CWW), and with untreated WW (RWW). Nitrifying, denitrifying, and nitrogen-fixing bacteria were quantified by qPCR targeting amoA, narG, and nifH, respectively. Nitrifying bacteria were the most affected by the water quality, as indicated by amoA copy number increase in RWW-irrigated soil and decrease in CWW-irrigated soil. Overall, the abundance of all three genes was positively influenced by RWW treatment. In conclusion, the 84 days of irrigation influenced the soil microbial communities, and the impact depended on the quality of the used water.

Factors driving PPCPs uptake by crops after wastewater irrigation and human health implications

Currently, water scarcity affects more than three billion people. Nevertheless, the volume of treated wastewater discharged into the environment is estimated to exceed 100 m3 per inhabitant/year. These water resources are regularly used in agriculture worldwide to overcome water shortages. Such a practice, however, entails the uptake of waterborne pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), by crops and their further access to the food web, constituting an additional route of human exposure to PPCPs, with potential health outcomes. In this study, the occurrence of 56 PPCPs in tomatoes, lettuce, and carrot, together with soil and irrigation water, was evaluated using a QuEChERS-based methodology for extraction and LC-MS/MS for analysis. The influence of the selected cultivation conditions on the plant uptake levels of PPCPs was assessed. Two irrigation water qualities (secondary and tertiary treatment effluents), two soil compositions (sandy and clayey), two irrigation systems (dripping and sprinkling), and three crop types (lettuce, tomato, and carrot) were tested. Carrots showed the highest load of PPCPs (7787 ng/g dw), followed by tomatoes (1692 ng/g dw) and lettuces (1248 ng/g dw). The most translocated PPCPs were norfluoxetine (fluoxetine antidepressant main metabolite) (521 ng/g dw), and the anti-inflammatory diclofenac (360 ng/g dw). Nine PPCPs, are reported to be accumulated in crops for the first time. Water quality was the most important factor for reducing PPCPs' plant uptake. Overall, the best conditions for reducing PPCP uptake by crops were irrigation with reclaimed water by sprinkling in soils with higher clay content. The risk assessment performed revealed that the crops' consumption posed no risk to human health. This study serves as the first comprehensive assessment of the relevance of diverse cultivation factors on PPCPs' plant uptake under field agricultural practices.

Growth of fungi and yeasts in food production waste streams: a feasibility study

Food production produces nutrient-rich waste streams which, depending on local legislation, are either sent to wastewater treatment plants or discharged into the environment. In addition to causing environmental harm in the second instance, valuable nutrients are lost. A more circular approach would be to reuse these waste streams. Fungi and yeasts are ideal candidates as they require lots of organic carbon (which is especially high in food production waste streams) for growth, with the potential for producing value-added biomass. Here, we tested the metabolic activity and possible growth of seven fungi and three yeasts in five different food production waste streams. Initial tests were done to find the most promising waste streams for growth and these were chosen for further study. All species were then cultured in these waste streams and oxygen uptake was measured to gauge metabolic activity which we used as a proxy for growth rate. Pelletization's effect on metabolic rates was tested on the most pellet-forming species, by adding agar to inhibit pellet formation. The most promising waste stream for yeast/fungal growth was cheese whey (Whey). Pellet inhibition (i.e., filamentous growth) resulted in increased metabolic activity of cells in the confectionary bakery waste stream with agar but decreased metabolic activity in Whey with agar. The best-growing species, Geotrichum candidum, has potential commercial value as a producer of enzymes, biochemicals and lipids and could provide added value while improving the circularity of water and nutrients in food production.

Water quality characteristics and reuse potential using adsorption as a post-treatment option for a full-scale hydrocyclone, coagulation, flocculation, and dissolved air flotation system

This study established a full-scale hybrid water treatment system combining a hydrocyclone, coagulation, flocculation, and dissolved air flotation unit (HCFD) and evaluated its performance in treating anthropogenically impacted lake water. The HCFD system offered the stable and efficient treatment of fluctuating influent loadings, meeting most of the highest water reclamation quality criteria except for that of organic matter. Adsorption was subsequently examined as a post-treatment process for the HCFD effluent, which has not been examined in many previous studies. As the adsorbent for the post-treatment, pine bark, a locally available agricultural waste feedstock, was modified using H2O2 to maximize its adsorption capacity. The surface modification increased its adsorption capacity for organic matter by 53-112%. The HCFD system in conjunction with the synthesized adsorbent thus demonstrated the ability to meet the highest standards for all water quality parameters, highlighting their synergistic potential for enhancement of water treatment. Liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection and Fourier transform infrared analysis were then employed to determine the mechanisms involved in the removal of specific contaminants using the HCFD system and post-adsorption unit. While the HCFD system successfully eliminated particulate and colloidal matter (e.g., phosphorous and biopolymers with a high molecular weight) using centrifugal and floating separation with the aid of two complementary polymers, the post-adsorption unit effectively adsorbed small-sized dissolved substances (e.g., low molecular weight acids and building blocks) via surface functional groups (-CH, -OH, -CH2, C=O, C=C, and C=O) using van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, and π-π or n-π interactions.

The effects of multilayer blue-green roof on the runoff water quality

In the context of climate changes, characterized by an increase of short but intense rainfall events and rise of the average temperature, the fast population growth and consequent urbanization require the implementation of innovative solutions to mitigate pluvial floods and, at the same time, reduce the water demand. Among the different nature-based solutions, multilayer blue-green roofs have been widely recognized for their high capacity of reducing runoff generation from rooftops, and their additional storage layer enables to collect water, which could be reused for different purposes. However, the quality of the collected water in a multilayer blue-green roof and the influence that the additional storage layer has on it have not been analysed yet. Following this knowledge gap, we investigated the potential benefits of a multilayer blue-green roof installed in Cagliari, with respect to a traditional roof. The outflow triggered by artificial irrigation and natural rainfall events was analysed, both from a quantitative and qualitative perspective. Results confirm the high contribution of multilayer blue-green roofs in mitigating runoff generation, which is however influenced by antecedent soil moisture and water level conditions. The outflow from the multilayer blue-green roof presents lower suspended solids and heavy metals concentrations than from a traditional roof. On the other hand, Carbon Oxigen Demand (COD) concentrations in the multilayer blue-green roof outflow exceed the limits defined by the Italian regulations (125 mg/l) for water discharge or reuse, partially due to the high residence time in the storage layer. Specific treatments could be planned to reuse the collected water for urban purposes.

Wastewater reuse in agriculture: Prospects and challenges

Sustainable water recycling and wastewater reuse are urgent nowadays considering water scarcity and increased water consumption through human activities. In 2015, United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (UN SDG6) highlighted the necessity of recycling wastewater to guarantee water availability for individuals. Currently, wastewater irrigation (WWI) of crops and agricultural land appears essential. The present work overviews the quality of treated wastewater in terms of soil microbial activities, and discusses challenges and benefits of WWI in line with wastewater reuse in agriculture and aquaculture irrigation. Combined conventional-advanced wastewater treatment processes are specifically deliberated, considering the harmful impacts on human health arising from WWI originating from reuse of contaminated water (salts, organic pollutants, toxic metals, and microbial pathogens i.e., viruses and bacteria). The comprehensive literature survey revealed that, in addition to the increased levels of pathogen and microbial threats to human wellbeing, poorly-treated wastewater results in plant and soil contamination with toxic organic/inorganic chemicals, and microbial pathogens. The impact of long-term emerging pollutants like plastic nanoparticles should also be established in further studies, with the development of standardized analytical techniques for such hazardous chemicals. Likewise, the reliable, long-term and extensive judgment on heavy metals threat to human beings's health should be explored in future investigations.

Current challenges and future perspectives for the full circular economy of water in European countries

This paper reviews the current problems and prospects to overcome circular water economy management challenges in European countries. The geopolitical paradigm of water, the water economy, water innovation, water management and regulation in Europe, environmental and safety concerns at water reuse, and technological solutions for water recovery are all covered in this review, which has been prepared in the frame of the COST ACTION (CA, 20133) FULLRECO4US, Working Group (WG) 4. With a Circular Economy approach to water recycling and recovery based on this COST Action, this review paper aims to develop novel, futuristic solutions to overcome the difficulties that the European Union (EU) is currently facing. The detailed review of the current environmental barriers and upcoming difficulties for water reuse in Europe with a Circular Economy vision is another distinctive aspect of this study. It is observed that the biggest challenge in using and recycling water from wastewater treatment plants is dealing with technical, social, political, and economic issues. For instance, geographical differences significantly affect technological problems, and it is effective in terms of social acceptance of the reuse of treated water. Local governmental organizations should support and encourage initiatives to expand water reuse, particularly for agricultural and industrial uses across all of Europe. It should not also be disregarded that the latest hydro politics approach to water management will actively contribute to addressing the issues associated with water scarcity.

Reclamation of real textile wastewater by sequential advanced oxidation and adsorption processes using corn-cob based materials

Wastewater management has become crucial for sustaining biological life in the near future. One of the key aspects is integration of treatment processes aiming reuse of treated water for many purposes instead of water discharge. This study focused on combining two different methods, photo-Fenton-like oxidation, and adsorption, for treatment of real textile wastewater to improve water quality to be reused for irrigation. The real textile wastewater was collected from a local plant and subjected to photo-Fenton-like oxidation and adsorption as hybrid process. The operational parameters were optimized for each step by assessing the water quality according to the domestic regulations for irrigation water. The photo-Fenton-like oxidation itself was not successful to achieve the targeted water quality for reuse whereas adsorption as an additional step made the treated water reusable in terms of organic content. But the treated water still contained a certain amount of salinity due to extreme salt usage in textile processing. It was concluded that the treated water at the end of hybrid process could be used for salinity resistant plants such as sugar beet, barley, and cotton which demonstrates a promising contribution to the circular economy for biomass.

Continuous flow operation of solar photo-Fenton fused with NaOCl as a novel tertiary treatment

A novel strategy based on solar photo-Fenton mediated by ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe3+-NTA) combined with NaOCl in continuous flow mode for wastewater reclamation has been studied. Escherichia coli (E. coli) inactivation attained ≥ 5 log10-units, meeting the most restrictive EU 2020/741 target (10 CFU/100 mL), and 75% of organic microcontaminant total load was removed. As a remarkable finding, trihalomethanes (THMs) concentration was insignificant, complying by far with the Italian legislation limit. To attain these results, first the effect of liquid depth on E. coli inactivation and imidacloprid (IMD) removal from spiked municipal effluents was evaluated in continuous flow pilot-scale raceway pond reactors at 60-min hydraulic residence time with low reagent concentrations (0.10 mM Fe3+-NTA, 0.73 mM H2O2 and 0.13 mM NaOCl). Disinfection was due to the bactericidal effect of chlorine. In contrast, liquid depth notably influenced microcontaminant removal, highlighting that operation at 10-cm liquid depth allows achieving treatment capacities higher than at 5 cm (16.50 vs 28.20 mg IMD/m2∙day). Next, the monitoring of THMs was carried out to evaluate the generation and degradation of disinfection by-products, along with the removal of actual microcontaminants. These promising results draw attention to the treatment potential and open the way for its commercial application.

Prioritization of organic contaminants in a reclaimed water irrigation system using wide-scope LC-HRMS screening

A prioritization procedure was developed and implemented at the local level to identify the most relevant organic contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in an agricultural area irrigated with reclaimed water. A wide-scope screening methodology based on UPLC-HRMS analysis was applied to holistically characterize the CEC footprint in water and its spatial and temporal variations. One hundred and fifty-eight CECs, including pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and pesticides, among others, were identified with a confidence level of 2 in the water samples investigated. After water treatment in the reclamation plant and transport within the irrigation channel network, more than a hundred compounds were still detected at the location where water is abstracted for crop irrigation. Compound ecotoxicity and occurrence (semi-quantified concentrations or peak intensity) were the parameters used to prioritize CECs in the water used for irrigation. Results pointed at venlafaxine, O-desmethyl-venlafaxine, galaxolidone, theophylline/paraxanthine, oxybenzone, and N-phenyl-1-naphtylamine, among others, as CECs of concern in the investigated area. This study provides a simple and cost-effective approach to detecting site-specific priority pollutants that could otherwise be overlooked by national or European regulations. The prioritization tool provided contributes to rationally designing monitoring and attenuation programs and efficiently managing water resources, by ensuring the safety of reclaimed water applications.

Characteristics of organic matter released from drinking water treatment sludge under different storage conditions: Evaluation based on activated carbon adsorbability

Recycling water from drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) as raw water raises several problems in the drinking water supply. In this study, the impact of storage temperatures and oxygen conditions for DWTS on the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from sludge was evaluated in terms of adsorbability by activated carbon. Results showed that the adsorbability of the released DOM varied greatly with storage temperatures and oxygen conditions. The modified Freundlich isotherm model revealed that the average adsorption strength (KF) estimated based on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ultraviolet absorbance at 260 nm (UV260) varied in the ranges of 4.01-12.1 (mg g-1)1-1/n and 23.1-52.6 (L m-1 g-1)1-1/n, respectively. DOM released under the condition without aeration possessed higher adsorbability compared to DOM released under the condition with aeration (1.41-3.01 times for DOC-based; 1.14-2.28 times for UV260-based). Moreover, the KF values of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM)-based fulvic acid-like and humic acid-like substances were higher than those of tyrosine-like and tryptophan-like substances, indicating humic-like substances released from DWTS were more adsorbable than protein-like ones. The methods or adsorption conditions that can enhance the removal of protein-like substances are essential for dealing with water quality problems associated with recycling water from drinking water treatment sludge.

Growth of Dunaliella viridis in multiple cycles of reclaimed media after repeated high pH-induced flocculation and harvesting

Minimizing the use of water for growing microalgae is crucial for lowering the energy and costs of animal feed, food, and biofuel production from microalgae. Dunaliella spp., a haloterant species that can accumulate high intracellular levels of lipids, carotenoids, or glycerol can be harvested effectively using low-cost and scalable high pH-induced flocculation. However, the growth of Dunaliella spp. in reclaimed media after flocculation and the impact of recycling on the flocculation efficiency have not been explored. In this study, repeated cycles of growth of Dunaliella viridis in repeatedly reclaimed media from high pH-induced flocculation were studied by evaluating cell concentrations, cellular components, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and bacterial community shifts in the reclaimed media. In reclaimed media, D. viridis grew to the same concentrations of cells and intracellular components as fresh media-107 cells/mL with cellular composition of 3 % lipids, 40 % proteins, and 15 % carbohydrates-even though DOM accumulated and the dominant bacterial populations changed. There was a decrease in the maximum specific growth rate and flocculation efficiency from 0.72 d-1 to 0.45 d-1 and from 60 % to 48 %, respectively. This study shows the potential of repeated (at least five times) flocculation and reuse of media as a possible way of reducing the costs of water and nutrients with some tradeoffs in growth rate and flocculation efficiency.

Effect of Hydraulic retention time on performance of anaerobic membrane bioreactor treating slaughterhouse wastewater

Slaughterhouse wastewater is a major environmental concern in many Vietnamese cities due to its high organic content and unpleasant odor. This study aimed to evaluate performance of a submerged flat sheet Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) system at different hydraulic retention time (HRT, 8-48 h) treating wastewater from a slaughterhouse in Hanoi City (Vietnam) at ambient temperature. The wastewater characteristics were as follows: chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 910 ± 171 mg/L; suspended solids (SS) of 273 ± 139 mg/L; and total nitrogen (T-N) of 115 ± 31 mg/L. The AnMBR system achieved high removal efficiencies for SS (99%) and COD (>90%) at an optimum HRT of 24 h. The biomethane yield reached 0.29 NL CH4/g CODinf. Importantly, the system maintained stable operation without flux decay and membrane fouling. HRT longer than 24 h could offer the better effluent quality without an increase in transmembrane pressure (TMP); however, it led to a lower methane production rate. Shorter HRT of 8-12 h caused a high TMP over -10 kPa, posing a risk for membrane fouling and biomass loss during cleaning, thus resulting in a low methane production. Our results suggest that AnMBR can be a reliable technology for wastewater treatment, reuse and energy recover from slaughterhouse wastewater in Vietnam and other similar climate countries.

Techno-environmental study on the consequences of carwash wastewater and its management methods

Carwash wastewater (CWW) is an important source of environmental pollution. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of CWW and technical comparison of its treatment methods. For this purpose, a systematic search was conducted and after three stages of screening the found articles, finally 30 articles were selected for this review. The results showed that due to the differences in the type of washing, the geological condition, the type of car, and the climatic conditions, the CWWs have temporal and spatial variation in the concentration of pollutants. However, the most important pollutants of CWW include oil, suspended solids, detergents, and organic compounds. The most widely used methods in CWW treatment in the main stages included chemical coagulation and electrocoagulation, which reduce turbidity by more than 90% and COD by more than 50% in the best efficiency. Also, membrane technology was a common method in CWW treatment systems to achieve proper effluent quality. COD reduction by ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, microfiltration, and reverse osmosis was 95-77%, more than 90%, 81-73%, and 87%, respectively. The efficiency of membrane technologies in reducing turbidity was often more than 90% and in few cases more than 50%. Sludge production in the coagulation process, energy consumption in electrochemical processes, and the low water recovery rate in membrane processes are important challenges in CWW treatment that must be managed by modifying the process or using combined methods.

Synergistic removal of pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance from ultrafiltered WWTP effluent: Free-floating ARGs exceptionally susceptible to degradation

To protect the environment and human health, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and persistent pharmaceuticals need to be removed from WWTP effluent prior to its reuse. However, an efficient process for removing free-floating extracellular DNA (exDNA) in combination with a wide range of pharmaceuticals is yet to be reported for real process conditions. As a possible solution, we treated real ultrafiltered WWTP effluent with UV/H₂O₂ and combined GAC and zeolite sorption. In terms of exDNA, sequencing and high-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) showed that exDNA is a potent carrier of numerous ARGs in ultrafiltered WWTP effluent (123 ARGs), including multi-drug efflux pump mexF that became the dominant exARG in GAC effluent over time. Due to the exposure to degradation agents, exDNA was reduced more efficiently than intracellular DNA, and overall levels of ARGs were substantially lowered. Moreover, GAC sorption was particularly effective in the removal of almost all the 85 detected pharmaceutical residues, with fresh GAC demonstrating an efficiency of up to 100%. However, zeolite (Si/Al 0.8) addition was needed to enhance the removal of persistent pollutants such as gabapentin and diclofenac to 57% and up to 100%, respectively. Our combined approach eminently decreases the hazardous effects of pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance in the ultrafiltered WWTP effluent, producing effluent suitable for multiple reuse options according to the latest legislation. In addition, we provided similarly promising but less extensive data for surface water and treated greywater.

Solar light driven degradation of textile dye contaminants for wastewater treatment - studies of novel polycationic selenide photocatalyst and process optimization by response surface methodology desirability factor

The unplanned anthropogenic activities and raced industrial revolution detrimentally causes serious threat to terrestrial and aquatic life. A high discharge of wastewater from industries using dyes affects living organisms and the environment. This paper presents studies on polycationic selenides (PCS) synthesized by hydrothermal methods for photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The synthesized PCS were confirmed by various characterization techniques such as FTIR, SEM, EDX, UV/Vis, and XRD. The FTIR spectra revealed characteristic band at 843, 548 cm^-1, and 417 cm^-1 due to the M - Se stretching and intrinsic stretching vibrations, respectively. The optical bandgap of polycationic selenide lies in the visible light region (2.36 eV). The SEM images showed that PCS has a spherical shape with an average crystallite size of 29.23 nm calculated from XRD data using Scherer's equation. The PCS has a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 7. The efficiency of synthesized PCS photocatalyst was confirmed in terms of its activity towards Eosin (EY) and Crystal violet (CV) dyes mineralization. The photocatalytic degradation for EY and CV dyes at optimum conditions was 99.47% and 99.31% and followed second order reactions kinetics with 1.4314 and 0.551 rate constant, respectively. The polynomial quadratic model is the best-fitted response surface methodology (RSM) model having a maximum desirability factors value and significant terms, with R² (0.9994) and adj R² values (1.0).

Recovery of phosphorus and other minerals from greenhouse wastewater generated during soilless tomato cultivation by means of alkalizing agents

The research was aimed at determining the possibility of recovering part of nutrients by precipitation from greenhouse wastewater (GW) from soilless tomato cultivation. Analyses included such elements as: P, S, N, Cl, Ca, Mg, K, Mo, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, and B. Three alkalizing agents were tested in a pH range of 6.5-12.0: Ca(OH)₂, KOH, and NH₄OH, which simultaneously enrich greenhouse wastewater in calcium, potassium, and nitrogen. It was determined what dose of the alkalizing agent should be used, how the composition of the treated GW will change, how much and what kind of sludge will be formed, what will be the stability and technical possibility of sediment separation, and whether the type of alkalizing agent affects the course of the process. Precipitation triggered by the alkalizing agents proved to be an effective method for the recovery of phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and boron, while it turned out ineffective in the case of the other elements tested, including nitrogen and potassium. Phosphorus recovery depended mainly on GW pH and forms of phosphate ions corresponding to this pH, and not on the alkalizing agent type. The pH value adjustment to pH = 9 for KOH and NH₄OH and to pH = 9.5 for Ca(OH)₂ ensured <99 % phosphorus recovery, which corresponded to P concentration in GW below 1 mgP/L and to the applied Ca(OH)₂, KOH, and NH₄OH doses of 0.20 g/L, 0.28 g/L, and 0.08 g/L, respectively. The highest P contents in the sludge were determined at pH = 7 and reached 18.0 %, 16.8 %, and 16.3 % in the experimental series with Ca(OH)₂, KOH, and NH₄OH, respectively. The sludge volume index increase along with pH increase up to pH = 10.5 for KOH and to pH = 11 for Ca(OH)₂ and NH₄OH.

[Health risks from crop irrigation with treated wastewater containing antibiotic residues, resistance genes, and resistant microorganisms]

This review describes the effects and potential health risks of resistant microorganisms, resistance genes, and residues of drugs and biocides that occur when re-using wastewater for crop irrigation. It focusses on specific aspects of these contaminants and their interactions, but does not provide a general risk assessment of the microbial load when using reclaimed water.Antimicrobial residues, antimicrobial resistant microorganisms, and resistance genes are frequently detected in treated wastewater. They have effects on the soil and plant-associated microbiota (total associated microorganisms) and can be taken up by plants. An interaction of residues with microorganisms is mainly expected before using the water for irrigation. However, it may also occur as a combined effect on the plant microbiome and all the abundant resistance genes (resistome). Special concerns are raised as plants are frequently consumed raw, that is, without processing that might reduce the bacterial load. Washing fruits and vegetables only has minor effects on the plant microbiome. On the other hand, cutting and other processes may support growth of microorganisms. Therefore, after such process steps, cooling of the foods is required.Further progress has to be made in the treatment of wastewater that will be used for crop irrigation with respect to removing micropollutants and microorganisms to minimize the risk of an increased exposure of consumers to transferable resistance genes and resistant bacteria.

Sustainable application of nanoparticles in wastewater treatment: Fate, current trend & paradigm shift

Existing water and wastewater treatment techniques are becoming increasingly difficult to employ due to the discovery of new toxins, the rapid development of population and industrial activities, and the limited quantity of water resources. Treatment of wastewater is a critical need in modern civilization due to a scarcity of water resources and rising industrial activity. Some of the techniques utilized include adsorption, flocculation, filtration, and others, although they are only used for primary wastewater treatment. However, the development and deployment of modern wastewater management with high efficiency and low capitalization are critical in terms of mitigating the environmental consequences of waste. The employment of different nanomaterials in the treatment of wastewater has opened up a world of possibilities for heavy metal and pesticide removal, as well as the treatment of microbes and organic contaminants in wastewater. Nanotechnology is a rapidly evolving technology because of certain nanoparticle's outstanding physiochemical and biological capabilities as contrasted to bulk counterparts. Secondly, it has been established that this is a cost-effective treatment strategy with significant potential in wastewater management, transcending the limitations imposed by currently existing technology. Advances in nanotechnology to reduce water contamination have been presented in this review, including the use of various nanomaterials such as nanocatalysts, nanoadsorbents, and nanomembranes in the treatment of wastewater containing organic contaminants, hazardous metals, and virulent pathogens.

A new workflow for assigning removal credits to assess overall performance of managed aquifer recharge (MAR)

Pathogen removal in managed aquifer recharge (MAR) systems is dependent upon numerous operational, physicochemical water quality, and biological parameters. Due to the site-specific conditions affecting these parameters, guidelines for specifying pathogen removal have historically taken rather precautionary and conservative approaches in order to protect groundwater quality and public health. A literature review of regulated pathogens in MAR applications was conducted and compared to up-and-coming indicators and surrogates for pathogen assessment, all of which can be gathered into a toolbox from which regulators and operators alike can select appropriate pathogens for monitoring and optimization of MAR practices. Combined with improved knowledge of pathogen fate and transport obtained through lab- and pilot-scale studies and supported by modeling, this foundation can be used to select appropriate, site-specific pathogens for regarding a more efficient pathogen retention, ultimately protecting public health and reducing costs. This paper outlines a new 10 step-wise workflow for moving towards determining robust removal credits for pathogens based on risk management principles. This approach is tailored to local conditions while reducing overly conservative regulatory restrictions or insufficient safety contingencies. The workflow is intended to help enable the full potential of MAR as more planned water reuse systems are implemented in the coming years.

Recirculating packed-bed biofilm photobioreactor combined with membrane ultrafiltration as advanced wastewater treatment

Packed-bed biofilm photobioreactor combined with ultrafiltration membrane was investigated for intensifying the process for secondary wastewater effluent treatment. Cylindrical glass carriers were used as supporting material for the microalgal-bacterial biofilm, which developed from indigenous microbial consortium. Glass carriers allowed adequate growth of the biofilm with limited suspended biomass. Stable operation was achieved after a start-up period of 1000 h, where supernatant biopolymer clusters were minimized and complete nitrification was observed. After that time, biomass productivity was 54 ± 18 mg·L^-1·day^-1. Green microalgae Tetradesmus obliquus and several strains of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria and fungi were identified. Combined process exhibited COD, nitrogen and phosphorus removal rates of 56 ± 5%, 12 ± 2% and 20 ± 6%, respectively. Membrane fouling was mainly caused by biofilm formation, which was not effectively mitigated by air-scouring aided backwashing.

Enhancement of EDDS-photo-Fenton process with plant-based coagulants for winery wastewater management

To achieve an efficient remediation of a winery wastewater (WW), it was studied a physical-chemical process (coagulation-flocculation-decantation - CFD) involving plant-based coagulants (PBC) with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), aiming to achieve the Portuguese legal limits. Initially, one invasive (Acacia dealbata) and three native species (Quercus ilex, Platanus x acerifólia and Tanacetum vulgare) were collected and used as plant-based coagulants (PBCs). The combination of Platanus acerifólia (P.a.) seeds with polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) achieved high turbidity (97.3%) and chemical oxygen demand (COD = 48.2%) removals, from raw WW, with [PBC] = 0.1 g/L, [PVPP] = 5 mg/L, pH = 3.0, fast mix = 150 rpm/3 min, slow mix = 20 rpm/20 min, sedimentation time = 12 h. Different AOPs were studied to treat raw WW, with photo-Fenton process revealing the highest COD efficiency (88.0%). To enhance the capabilities of photo-Fenton, ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid trisodium salt (EDDS) was assessed as a chelation agent, reducing iron precipitation. The pre-treatment of WW by PBCs followed by EDDS/photo-Fenton (pH = 6.0, [H₂O₂] = 175 mM, [Fe²⁺] = 5 mM, [EDDS] = 1 mM, T = 298 K, time = 240 min) increased the COD removal, whatever the radiation source applied (UV-C, UV-A and solar). Among the different processes, the combined P. a. seeds and UV-C/EDDS/Fenton allowed increase the WW biodegradability from 0.26 to 0.46, and achieved a COD removal of 95.7%, reaching the Portuguese legal limits. As final remark, the synergy of PBCs and EDDS/photo-Fenton is considered effective and sustainable process for raw WW remediation and water reuse.

Enteric pathogen reduction targets for onsite non-potable water systems: A critical evaluation

Onsite non-potable water systems (ONWS) collect and treat local source waters for non-potable end uses such as toilet flushing and irrigation. Quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) has been used to set pathogen log10-reduction targets (LRTs) for ONWS to achieve the risk benchmark of 10-4 infections per person per year (ppy) in a series of two efforts completed in 2017 and 2021. In this work, we compare and synthesize the ONWS LRT efforts to inform the selection of pathogen LRTs. For onsite wastewater, greywater, and stormwater, LRTs for human enteric viruses and parasitic protozoa were within 1.5-log10 units between 2017 and 2021 efforts, despite differences in approaches used to characterize pathogens in these waters. For onsite wastewater and greywater, the 2017 effort used an epidemiology-based model to simulate pathogen concentrations contributed exclusively from onsite waste and selected Norovirus as the viral reference pathogen; the 2021 effort used municipal wastewater pathogen data and cultivable adenoviruses as the reference viral pathogen. Across source waters, the greatest differences occurred for viruses in stormwater, given the newly available municipal wastewater characterizations used for modeling sewage contributions in 2021 and the different selection of reference pathogens (Norovirus vs. adenoviruses). The roof runoff LRTs support the need for protozoa treatment, but these remain difficult to characterize due to the pathogen variability in roof runoff across space and time. The comparison highlights adaptability of the risk-based approach, allowing for updated LRTs as site specific or improved information becomes available. Future research efforts should focus on data collection of onsite water sources.

Impacts of high-quality coal mine drainage recycling for replenishment of aquatic ecosystems in arid regions of China: Bacterial community responses

Coal mine water is usually recycled as supplementary water for aquatic ecosystems in arid and semiarid mining regions of China. To ensure ecosystem health, the coal mine water is rigorously treated using several processes, including reverse osmosis, to meet surface water quality standards. However, the potential environmental impacts of this management pattern on the ecological function of receiving water bodies are unclear. In this study, we built several microcosm water ecosystems to simulate the receiving water bodies. High-quality treated coal mine drainage was mixed into the model water bodies at different concentrations, and the sediment bacterial community response and functional changes were systematically investigated. The results showed that the high-quality coal mine drainage could still shape bacterial taxonomic diversity, community composition and structure, with a concentration threshold of approximately 50%. Moreover, both the Mantel test and the structural equation model indicated that the salinity fluctuation caused by the receiving of coal mine drainage was the primary factor shaping the bacterial communities. 10 core taxa in the molecular ecological network influenced by coal mine drainage were identified, with the most critical taxa being patescibacteria and g_Geothermobacter. Furthermore, the pathway of carbohydrate metabolism as well as signaling molecules and interactions was up-regulated, whereas amino acid metabolism showed the opposite trend. All results suggested that the complex physical-chemical and biochemical processes in water ecosystems may be affected by the coal mine drainage. The bacterial community response and underlying functional changes may accelerate internal nutrient cycling, which may have a potential impact on algal bloom outbreaks.

MCDA-DEA approach to construct a composite indicator for effluents from WWTPs considering the influence of PPCPs

Considering current water situation, reuse is an effective solution to meet water demand and reduce pressure on conventional water sources. However, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) decrease their quality and suitability. With the aim of identifying and monitoring both the influence of PPCPs and the suitability of effluents to be reused, this study proposes the development of a composite indicator (CI) related to PPCP presence in WWTPs, through the common weight multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA)-data envelopment analysis (DEA) model. Obtaining a CI for PPCPs is a novel approach in the published literature, showing a new perspective in PPCP management and their influence in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, this study proposes an improvement on MCDA-DEA model which maintains the initial hierarchy obtained for the units analyzed. The development of CI is based on information about the technological, environmental, social, and biological issues of WWTPs. Results show that 4 of the 33 WWTPs analysed had the best CI values, meaning that their effluents have lower environmental impact. The development of a CI related to PPCPs in WWTPs suggests that further steps are needed to manage the WWTP effluents. Hence, the need to implement preventive measures in WWTPs has been shown, even though the removal of PPCPs is not yet part of European law. This work highlights the importance of considering PPCPs as priority pollutants in wastewater management and reuse frameworks, to guarantee low environmental impact and adapt wastewater reuse based on a circular economy approach. HIGHLIGHTS: Emerging contaminants (PPCPs) are used as effluent quality indicators. A composite indicator for PPCPs performance has been developed through MCDA-DEA model. Indicator obtained allow decision makers implementing concrete actions to assess effluent quality. Results show the improvement capacity of the effluents quality through PPCPs removing.
